South Africans did just enough to beat Slovenia in something of a boring match... Italy-Croatia underway, 0-0 after first 45 mins, and Croatia is like a whole different team compared to the dreadful bunch of has-beens that lost against Mexico. I say Italy should throw Inzaghi in the mix and drop Totti a bit lower. We'll see how it goes.

After a pretty stale first half for the Italians, Vieri heads in a lovely cross from Doni to put them ahead 1-nil in the 55th minute!!!

Too bad I traded Doni yesterday, thinking Trap
would insert Inzaghi and move Totti back
behind the strikers.

Excellent goal for Croatia, Italy's defense was definitely sleeping there. 1-1 with 17 minutes to go.

Ohh! Unlucky, Totti hit the goalpost on a
deadly free-kick.

And in the dying momemnts of the match, Italy gets a goal called back, VERY Controversal IMO, I don't see why that goal should not have been allowed. GRRRRRRRRRR. 2-1 Italia loses. :-(

2-1 final. What a finish, though, with the tying
goal nullified by a close offside call.

Ah, I'm sorry for the thread-title... ;) But come on, Italy got totally ass-raped there, 2 goals taken away for reasons unknown... Neither was an off-side, and the latter one wasn't even close.

f@ckin' bastard refree!!!!
he robbed us 2 more than regular goals and couldn't even see any foul the croatian did on totti......great disappointment here in italy, and i even think that trapattoni is a jerk because we had inzaghi available and we still have played with just one striker. Damn, this approach stinks, we're italy and we've to make the games, leaving to others the preoccupation to don't let us score. We've been too pcaried and we paid for it.
And hey, did you see how important nesta is in our lineup?? he just govern the defense with authority, and if he isn't there others defenders are really scared and insecure.....

Something I've wondered for a long time... why the hell don't they use video-check in football games? I mean the field is so big that there's no way the ref could see everything, yet all the situations seem clear in television. In hockey they check messy situations all the time, and almost never any teams gets murdered by the referees as badly as Italy did today. Now I'm sure the refs will check the 2 goals on the video AFTER the match and see that no off-sides happened, but all they can do is to say oops. Oh crap.

Anyway, no serious harm done since winning Mexico in the last game shouldn't be too tasking at all, and therefore round 2 is pretty much a certain thing. We really could use Vieri AND Inzaghi right from the beginning, with Totti playing the 10-position. You hear me Trapattoni?

But in hockey, they wouldnt go back and check an offside... but a intresting last 30 minutes to that game. Bad reffing, and a huge upset- seems to be what is going on in all the sports world lately.

Brazil up 1-0, which brings me to my question- Is Roberto Carlos a really short normal person, or a really tall midget? Whenever they show him, I think he looks like Mini Me's big brother.

Haha, Japanese media has already demanded that the "dynamic duo" of two englishmen, Graham Poll and Philip Sharp, shouldn't be allowed on court again in this tournament... I think FIFA would like to have a little chat with them boys, too... No wonder, those muppets were definitely a disgrace to all the refs in the World Cup. What a shame.

As an English man I can only apologise for Mr.Poll and his ignorant assistant. We have to tolerate this muppet every week! Not to mention his column of overblown arrogance in my newspaper this morning.Hopefully his last.

how are ties broken after the first round? i'm especially interested in the possible scenarios for Italy, Mexico, and Argentina.

Hmmm... Wasn't the assistant who saw the fould and the offside actually a Dane? Perhaps some guy called Jens Larsen?

Urmas,it was the Danish assistant;but the ultimate responsibility is Poll's.Why he didn't go for a chat and watch the giant-screen replay, like certain other refs have, is beyond me.
