Ok, I'll take the longshot. 100-1 by someone's standard.

The U.S. of A.

We're gonna win it.

Ira and leggestand,
This thread warms my heart. You even call us England-the GB nonsense on TSN is puke-making.
We have 2 super-heros in Becks and Owen, and both are playing as badly as I have seen them. They have to pick it up.Our potential weaknesses have risen to the occasion though, which is great.
We are having a great time in England;Sven is rivalling our Queen for profile and popularity.

Italy, i'm biased but i think that after the last 2 matches in which we played poorly, we can't play worse than that ;)

Anyone has the latest odds after the end of the first round? I suppose it's Brazil then Italia, Spain and England.

I think that Brazil may be somewhat flattered by the relatively poor quality of the other teams in the group. I think that the winner of the England-Denmark game has a great chance of going all the way.
I was fortunate to be in Sapporo for the England-Argentina game and it was a cracker. However, the problem with England is that they don't appear to have anyone up front, apart from Owen, to put the ball in the net. Heskey is not going to do it. Tel, why isn't Fowler getting a shot?

Fowler was injured for a bit when they arrived.Sven's latest masterplan involves an hour of Emily softening them up for Sheringham to apply a clinical finish.Vassel has worked his way into the mix ahead of Fowler as Owen's deputy.I go with Sven on this.Becks and Scholes will get our goals against Denmark;-)

I think ngland has a legitimate shot, and the game against Denmark will be tougher than the game against Brazil, if England wins. I think Owen will have a tough time against Denmark, but Vassell may be a good late substitute to put in on the tired Danish defense towards the 70 minute mark.

From watching nearly all first round games - I will say that England has the best center back combination in the Cup - Campbell and Ferninand and nearly flawless. I don't think Ronaldo will do much of anything against them, which is what happened to Batistuta and Nesta. Also, Butt should limit Rivaldo's touches and playmaking ability.

Hopefully England can get by Denmark - pretty or ugly. The news is that Thomasson (4 goals already) is doubtful for the game, but has not been ruled out yet. Hopefully even if he does play, Campbell and Ferdinand will neautralize him.

Even though I am Canadian, I still managed to make a Liverpool game in Liverpool vs. Barcelona last year for semi-finals. Liverpool won 1-0 and went on to win the cup, I actually got to see Owen play :)

I would be very sad if England win the World Cup, they are not a good team, they defend well as they always have, and god forbid if they score first because then suddenly they send 10 players back in the box to defend the rest of the game.

There is a reason all the top teams in England are full of foreign players, it is because the English players suck badly, Owen and Beckham are the obvious exceptions. Oh and Seaman, who basically keeps them in most games.

Brazil over England, 2-1. U.S. over (over-rated) Germany. Spain loses their next game.

Brazil wins the cup.

This tourament far exceeds anything we have to offer in the U.S. (baseball, football, hoops and hockey). I love my U.S. sports, but this WORLD cup stuff rules.

Brazil were outplayed by Belgium for long periods.I was impressed only by the superb first goal. With Beckham up to full steam,Owen's confidence high and our makeshift team really functioning as a unit, I think Brazil are there for the taking. And which of your cancerous moons were you on when we beat Germany 5-1 in their backyard to even make it? It is Scholes and Butt who will undo Brazil as they did Argentina.

First off - England has already proven that they have the best defense in the World Cup. One total goal allowed in 4 games against quality opponents - unlike Brazil. And the one goal they allowed was off a mistake, and not generated by good offensive play by Sweden.

Brazil is undoubtedly good, but they have yet to prove anything this World Cup. Playing less than average opponents except for Belgium, who is average at best, and letting up 2 goals to Costa Rica, the defense will be Brazil's undoing. Now I don't think England has a prayer of shutting Brazil out, but I think the same goes for Brazil. Owen always wreaks havoc on South Americans, and will do so against Brazil. Ronaldo will be close to useless against the combination of Campbell and Ferdinand, who have proved to be two of the top 5 center backs in the world. If Brazil is smart, they will attack the flanks (Mills especially) and find ways to get the ball across on the ground, because they won't win a header. Butt should minimalize Rivaldo's touches, and Brazil may have to play him wide to get him away from Butt. Scholes will have a relatively easy time against the Brazil central defense.

I think it looks like England will win. But, the experience factor is against England. They have a young team, that may be a bit nervous, but maybe that will make them play better. Final line: England 4 Brazil 2. Owen scores two goals.

I think that Brazil v. England Thursday night (in Seattle) might just be the Kings-Lakers match of the cup. Italy and Spain haven't impressed me much, and Germany hasn't really been tested.

Great soccer so far. Watching the US-Mexico match at a local Mexican cantina last night was fantastic!

Aaah, bili, you lucky west coast bastid. That U.S. -- Mexico game started at a reasonable hour for you, 11:30pm. 2:30am here on the least coast is just plain horrid.

Yeah, my gut tells me Brazil because they seem to be winning, period. England has clearly shown some balance and defense, but Brazil has the play-making and quick strike scoring capabilities that are hard to match in the cup. Should be a thrilling contest (I love trying to talk as if I am Euro football write!). As if!

It's nice to see americans getting into soccer. Now maybe you guys are soon going to call this game "football" like everybody else :-)

Anyway, congrats to the USA team, they're in the quarterfinals, France, Argentina, and Portugal are not.

Yeah, Mr. Walker - though I haven't been taking as much advantage of it as I should. Have only caught a handful of matches because I don't have cable.

There's an Irish pub practically nextdoor that leaves their TVs on all night, though they don't stay open passed 2 (they have to shut down the taps in Seattle at 2 - how uncivilized! I miss stumbling out of NYC bars as the sun rises, though I don't miss the hangovers!), and another English pub down the street that has been pulling all-nighters. I will try and frequent them now that we are into the quarters. I'll definitely be checking out Brazil-England. Should be a great match.

If you open your eyes you would have noticed that Sweden were all over England like they were playing a college team, Argentina were all over England also, The result of the game doesn't always show who was the better team, that is one of the intrigueing things about soccer. England cannot surely go on to win the world cup when their opposition is outplaying them so convincingly. England were just lucky they have struck teams who just were shooting the ball everywhere except in the net, and most of the time it wasn't pressured , just bad striking.

How can claim Ferdinand and Campbell be claimed as the best central defence when they allow so many shots to be taken at their goal each game. Although i agree they do have a tough defence in general due to their boring and overly conservative style of play.

Ronaldo will joke with those two slow english guy for 90 minutes, on Friday.
You can be big, you can be good on headers, but if you find a player that destroys you with his speed, the only way to stop him is shhot him.
Anyway, England will beat Brazil, and it's very sad.

The thing is, Campbell and Ferdinand are NOT slow, like most big backs. Campbell has a very quick turn, and will use his size to get between Ronaldo and the ball.

As for cancermoon, you sound like all the people in the world cup that are out and show exactly whats wrong with people these days when it comes to losing. England has was 2 games and tied 2, and you give them no respect. It just so happens that England played FOUR teams at the right time according to you. So if they when the World Cup, I guess they would of played 7 teams at the right time and were just lucky. Why can't people just see that teams that make it to the quarters and further, MUST be doing something right, and its not because the teams they played against didnt play well. To me, it looks like England is perfectly happy letting teams pass it around the back, but when they move into their third, they clamp down and gain possession. I don't thin any team has "outplayed" England, only "outpossessed," which is not England's game anyhow.

Also, if any of you can tell me a better centerback tandem than Ferdinand and Campbell, let me know. I am talking strictly defensive, because these guys aren't in a system that allows them to push forward - unless it is on corners, where they both have shown dominance.

Sweden outplayed us in the second half;over-ran us with a more physical effective game.Against Nigeria it was the hottest our guys had ever played in.Needing only a point we did not release many runs ahead of the ball.We were magnificent against Argentina and that's what you'll get against Brazil on Friday.
And,cancermoon we did not sit back against Denmark.3-0 at halftime unless you've forgotten.

Nesta - Cannavaro.
That's why we let Korea score twice, today...
