At this moment, every team on Italy's group can still qualify. It surely is the most interesting group of this phase, but I would have preferred to pass the turn without problems... anyway, let's see how it ends, meanwhile there are Turkey vs China and Brazil vs Costarica. Enjoy!

For the moment, Brazil and Turkey are winning by two. Nice start.

Brazil-Costarica 5-2
Turkey-China 3-0

Turkey qualifies...i was hoping for Costarica, but maybe the turkish deserved it more.

WTF??!! This is getting seriously ridiculous! Italy scored their 6th goal in the tournament, yet for the 3rd time it was taken away for reasons god-only-knows! Inzaghi stands like 2 meters on-side, gets the ball, scores, and then gets totally molested by the Malaysian line-man! The Danish focker Jens Larsen or Lars Jensen or whatever the hell his name was, has publicly said "He is sorry" for what happened in Croatia-match... Yea well you know what, donut puncher, I'm sorry too.

Just got up about 20 minutes ago, with my room mate watching the game. I watched the last 5 minutes.

My god.

Aaaaah! ...and justice for all! Well maybe not justice, but at least we showed that Mexico + one line-ref just isn't enough of an combination to send us back home! Grazie, Del Piero!

But as I have a good gollop of Italian blood running in my veins I fully consider myself as one when it comes to football... It's not like I have anything to cheer for regarding the Finnish team. ;) But now that Italy and Finland are in the same qualifying-group to Euro -04 I'm to face a bit scitzophrenic-situation...

the pathetic thing is that the best soccer games have to be whistled by refrees from benin, malaysya, togo, burundi, zimbabwe or from every other country in which the greatest soccer match is between monkeys and elephants.
Damn, they don't have the experience and they have not familiarity with the speed of world soccer, and they are seriously turning this world cup into a joke. Too bad collina is italian, i would have loved to have a refree like him.

I hear you, if only they could multiply Collina and take away his nationality, then he could ref all the games till the end of the world. Yes he is that good.

I thought Hall from the U.S was doing a good job. Not calling everything that "looks" like a foul and not dropping cards on everyone on the pitch. He seems to let the guys play, and let the game flow. DOn't get me started on some of these refs.

It is pathetic blaming the referees. Why not give them some credit instead.
Yes, Collina may be the best, but all the referees are carefully selected from different parts of the world and are fully qualified to be there.
Soccer is a serious sport, almost a religion in most countries, and to suggest that the referees are not experienced enough, is a joke, even if they are from benin, malaysya, togo, burundi, or zimbabwe.
Wrong calls will always be made, in any sport.
Without the referees, there wouldn't be a world cup.
So please, stop whining!

That's not the point, Teddybears. You can easily see the difference between a "semi-pro" referee (Collina, Dallas, Merk...) and someone who comes from nations that sometimes don't even have a championship! You can't be ready to direct a match that could decide the history of a World Cup, it's obvious.

The point is that it does not matter if a referee comes from a country without a domestic championship, it's the international experience that counts, and all the referees have a lot of international experience.
Yes, some referees are better than others, and they are ranked after experience and performance. And the better referees will direct the matches that will decide the history of the World Cup.

Lazio: "the pathetic thing is that the best soccer games have to be whistled by refrees from benin, malaysya, togo, burundi, zimbabwe or from every other country in which the greatest soccer match is between monkeys and elephants."

I strongly resent this statement tainted of racism. I come from an african country (Morocco) and as a matter of fact, Belqola was the referee for Brazil-France '98 and was perfect. International referees are independant of the quality of the championships of their country. They are trained and groomed at an international level and their nationality has absolutely nothing to do with their competence.

I shall remind you of the cases of italian referees who were offered gifts before important games... And also of "fans" throwing bananas on the field...

As far as monkeys and elephants, these are the players that shine in italian and other european championships. The quality of the game in their country didn't prevent them from becoming superstars.

Referee's mistakes are unfortunately part of the game and will be for ever. Whining about it or trying to find racial shortcuts will lead to nothing.

You remind me of Thierry Roland, the N°1 french TV announcer who in the "Hand of God" game between Argentina and England said on Public TV: A game of this level should not have been given to a tunisian referee"... I'll let you judge of this kind of statements.

As a french citizen, I can tell you that I, like a lot of ppl, despise Thierry Roland, who's widly considered as a somewhat racist person.

I must add that I've also been shocked by the comments of irriducibili lazio. But I'm not gonna comment on this subject anymore, I'm only here to talk fantasy hoops and soccer.

I agree JCS, not only is Thierry Roland a racist, he is a moron too.

He has been announcing for the past year that without any doubt France will make it two in a row, and make millions of people dream for nothing.

On a funny note, Adidas has based all its recent ads in France on a second star on the french uniform. Now they have removed it and changed the ad to something like : "If you can start all over again after loosing". I thought that was so funny.

Yeah, in fact right now in France it's a bit of a witches hunt. It seems like everybody wants to kill the people they cherished only two weeks ago. It's funny to see all these TV announcers changing their minds and saying" THey should have done this or that", they don't even know what they're talking about.

Anyway, this team is still a great team, losing is part of sport. It happens. France and Argentina happened to lose this time, if you play the World Cup again in three months, I don't think it would be this way again. We lost, let's forget about it, it happens.

A lot of the older players will leave the national team and let their place to hungrier, younger players. They'll arrive at the Euro 2004 with something to prove, like in 98. Don't forget that the French junior national team lost against the Czechs in penalty time in the final of the junior World Cup earlier in the year, and they had beaten the same Czechs in the qualification round. We have a wonderful generation of players coming along, we'll be back for sure.

And you pointed the polemic about Adidas' ads, yep that's been a big talk recently. To their credit, they're official supporters of the national team since the 1940's, it's not like they jumped on the bandwagon in 98. But a lot of sponsors will lose a bunch of money, Adidas included, that's for sure.

hey guys take it easy!!!
i didn't want to say something racist, and i'm not racist!!!
i just wanted to point out how they leave refree without any kind of experience whistle in games of crucial importance.
It's a matter of fact that a linesman from benin doesn't use to be involved in a similiar game.
and i say benin as i can say thailand, samoa, liechteinstein, granada, panama, mongolia, fiji islands......damn, relax!!!!
Unfortunately i used to try to be ironic on linesman and refree habits using that 2 kinds of animals, but if you prefer i can use boa constrictors and siberian tiger......;-)
it's not a matter of race, and i wouldn't permit to say this, it's a matter of experience they don't have......and they're clearing showing this.
