Since we are just 6 days away from the start of the season I thought a thread discussing players you might not draft right off but were keeping your eye on to see what their role might be would be of some benfit to everyone. So here goes nothing....

I basically have been going through last years stats and basing my list off of points versus cost. Players that seem to be worth their price average 300-310swp/pound spent, as a very general rule.

Deane - striker last year averaged 359swp/pound. This is a very high average that if repeated this year makes him worth consideration. price-4.63 Makes him a good low priced striker to invest the extra money in another position.

Cole - Striker that averaged 333swp/pound. This is a higher average than most of the other big named strikers. Priced at 7.2 is a little steep but he could be a good alternative to the popular choices I have seen at striker.

Owen - 322swp/#
Ginola - 314swp/#
Barry - Defender - 3.19swp/#
Giggs - 311swp/#
Bakke - 311swp/#

I would not consider Cole a "hidden" player but his average did surprise me.
I have not even begun to scratch the surface and there are certainly players who should out perform last year in big way. I am not saying this is the way to pick a squad but it can cetainly open your eyes to someone you might have overlooked.
Post your "finds"!

Tom, Thanks for the post. The SWP/P is an interesting way to look at it; early on I'd imagine we'd want to maximize this value as much as possible.

The problem with strikers, it seems to me, is the same as wide receivers in American football. Except for a couple of superstars you can count on to get a goal every other game or so, most of the rest are a crapshoot [i.e., anyone of a large number of mid-range strikers can have a break-out game at any time, without warning]. I think I'll need to pay attention to matchups more than anything.

Maybe I should start a new thread on this, but what teams have noticably weaker defenses this year? If there are some strikers going against those teams early on, I think I'll probably look at those guys more closely, even if they are more expensive, since they're more apt to put points on the board.

I agree with the match-up point. Here is another wrinkle in the fabric so to speak - you guys from across the big pond correct me if I am wrong.

Most teams tend to start their strong(ie best) line-ups against their best competiton and when going up against lesser opponents they tend to rest the big guns. This could explain guys like Deane having high averages if they face the second string instead of the first. We will also need to keep a close eye on players that get called back for national team responsiblities. I have a feeling this is going to be where you can really gain ground throughout the season.

Hyypia(sp?) 295swp/# This guy was the highest scorer from last year I believe. Is he worth 10M# that he is currently priced??? Maybe if you team him with 4M# players Deane.
