0 Subject: who did blue hen draft

Posted by: blue hen
- [386331314] Fri, Jul 14, 14:26

The only ones I'm sure of, based on price/talent are Ed deGoey and Ryan Giggs. I'm no expert (see How did blue hen do last night in Baseball forum), but I tried to draft cheap players I had heard a little about and some superstars. I've got Goater and Viduka at striker, and Giggs and Kewell in the midfield. Let's hear some chatter about sleepers or "money trains".

I like Henry as well, he's already proven a good player. I'm willing to take a chance on Rebrov.
I don't know what you're talking about with Newcastle, Ruud Gullit left two years ago. Bobby Robson is in charge. I like Kieron Dyer on Newcastle, I don't know his price tag, but he can play defence, midfield and score a goal as well.
I haven't researched everything yet, but it's still a month before the start of the game.

And Rebrov has two very good wingers who can feed him the ball, two of the best, Ginola and Anderton.

Freestyler, this may sound nit-picky,but Gullit's last game in charge at Newcastle was a home defeat by Sunderland on 26/8/99,when he dived on his sword on national TV by dropping Shearer. He left them winless, cluttered with expensive bad buys and Robert Lee numberless training with the youths.Robson took over in Sept.,with his second game an 8-0 drubbing of Sheff.Wed..Cheers,

Since we are talking about it, Anderton would be a pretty good pickup himself. But having good wingers is nice for a striker who's a great header and Rebrov isn't. He's a right place, right time kind of striker IMO.

It will be interesting to see what Graham's got in mind for the Spurs. He's added Rebrov to Iversen,Armstrong(who was scoring at a pace to match anyone at the end of last season)and Ferdinand. He was in for Cort, who chose to go to Newcastle,so another arrival is possible.Darren,The English Patient, tends to play central midfield nowadays and will rack up points under the SW scoring system-when healthy.Ginola was on his way to Villa, who then baulked at his salary requirements.I would not bank on him being a Spur on kick-off day.Confused?I am.

Anybody like the youngin, Joe Cole from West Ham? He's 18, priced at 3 mil, and is getting bandied about for national team attention. Some input on his playing time would be appreciated.

Thanks EA for bringing this up. I was also wondering about Joe Cole. In the soccer computer game I play (Championship Manager) there was a fierce bidding war over him, eventually won by Real Madrid, so just how good is this guy? Also what kind of impact will the Olympics have on some of the top teams, apart from Kanu and Arsenal? Speaking of Arsenal, rumor has it that Overmars and Petit are coveted by a Barcelona presidential hopeful but this deal doesn't seem very probable.

Ah, he might very well be a part of the Olympic squad. West Ham's coach was trying to downplay the possibility on teamtalk, I'd link it if I knew any HTML, but its pretty easy to find. Bubba, what computer game is that exactly? Is there gameplay like FIFA, or is it more of a simulation?

Bubba, is that Championship Manager a game you downloaded. I only ask because I tried to download a game called Championship Manager about a week ago and failed.

EA- Championship Manager is a simulation, no gameplay or fancy graphics. The thing that hooked me is the over-all complexity of managing a squad from bidding wars for transfers, keeping players (and the board) happy, training, game-day tactics, and keeping the finances straight. The level of detail is outstanding: as a gurupie I was instantly hooked by the detailed complexity of player and coach attributes and the intricate financial challenges of running a club. If you're interested it's published by Sports Interactive/Eidos for PC (Feral for Mac). BTW thanks for the info on Cole.

Cool, back2back posts on different days!
Those of you interested in Viduka will be happy to hear that his work permit has apparently been approved so the transfer to Leeds is now on. Arsenal still has problems with Edu's papers and it looks like that deal will fall through. Too bad, he looked promising at only 4 mill.

Players I like (feedback please):

Giorgi Kinkladze (MF)- PROS: A talented playmaker and efficient passer. He was the leading assists man for Derby last season. Only 2.21 mill. CONS: Might not be fully healthy in time for the start of the season, due to a hernia operation. Plays for a team that finished 5th worst and only scored 44 goals.

Mustapha Hadji (MF)- PROS: Another midfield talent. In position to feed passes to Robbie Keane, a good, up-and-coming young striker. Led his team in assists. CONS: Plays for a mediocre team that, despite Keane's 12 goals, only scored 49 goals. Not cheap, at 6.27 mill.

Ryan Giggs (MF)- PROS: Among the cream of the crop in the game. Plays for a prolific scoring team, with support of other stars like Beckham, Yorke, Cole, Scholes, etc. In excellent form, coming off of what was probably his best season, thus far. Relatively undervalued at 6.39 mill, a full 2+ mill below the priciest midfielders. CONS: Has been considered by some to be an inconsistent, frustrating player who fails to fulfil his full potential.

JOE COLE (MF)- PROS: One of the brightest young stars in the England. Plays for a West Ham team that has Di Canio and Sukor up front. Should get a healthy amount of playing time as he continues to mature. Cheap, at 3.07 mill. CONS: Just a youngster (18 yrs) so he still may be a bit raw. Coming off of a broken leg that might have cost him a spot on the Euro2000 squad. May be headed to the Olympics? (see post #30 above)

Sander Westerveld (G)- PROS: A solid 'keeper with a strong defense in front of him. Liverpool gave up the fewest goals of all the teams (30 in 38 games). A bit cheaper than Barthez, at 6.23 mill. CONS: Probably will not get as many wins as Barthez. Still on the expensive side.

Graeme Le Saux (D)- PROS: A first-team veteran at a bargain basement price. CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP, at only .5 mill. Plays for a solid team with a quality cast that should contend for the championship. Did I mention he is cheap? CONS: There's always the lingering doubt after an injury (ankle), especially at his age (31). Will be highly held (for those of you who prefer to go "against the flow" and differentiate).

Hey guys, just found the soccer forum when I saw the footy thread in the Baseball forum! This looks great, I look forward to loadsa footy chat over the next few months!

Bubba - I like Hadji... I had him on a fantasy team last year and he gets good points, like you said for assists, and also for the odd goal. I am also thinking that he'll get more chances at free kicks and even penalties now that Gary McAllistair has gone to Liverpool!

Blue Hen, We all know Viduka is a proven scorer and this Leeds team should bring out the best in him. Here in Australia, Viduka has the reputation of sometimes not working hard enough if his team is down. I think, however he is going to score as he is a brute up front and a good finisher.
Don't know if that helps but I'm going to wait and see how he goes.

Blue Hen- I think Viduka should do pretty well with Leeds, but for striker I'm leaning more towards players that are cheaper, namely Owen and maybe Sukor.

Owen has been hampered with a Hamstring injury since the World Cup in 98, but he started playing regularly again towards the end of last season. So if he stays healthy he'll definitely be worth a look.

I had Viduka and Goater on my team last year, and they were both tremendous. Owen, at this point, looks too good to pass up, so one of those two had to go. I dropped Viduka when he had the problems and picked up Owen. But Goater is a great player as well...

I guess I've just got a lot of thinking to do...

Bad news for you Goater fans out there. I just read that he'll be out for a month with a knee injury.
See http://www.planetfootball.com/Article.asp?ARTICLE=13863

As for Juninho, the last I heard was that he is still at Atletico Madrid but both Middlesbrough and, recently, Aston Villa are at the
top of the list to sign him. A believe a hefty transfer fee is the reason his future is still unsettled. There's a good chance he'll stay
in the Premiership but rumor has it his dad is trying to find an interested buyer in Italy.

to Mr Perm aka the Dude or anyone else who can gimme a clue on this !

re to your post#14 it might be you Hark !

Well either that or Smallworld has locked any access from Germany to this as usual Premier Run game.

I tried to get access to the premier from at least 5 different computers in very different cities of Germany and the browser locks up after exactly 93% of home page of Premier League loaded.

The same goes for a few friends who just tried to get into it.

So what is this a British Pride server filter that blocks out any access from Germany to prevent Brit soccer fans from another possible German humiliation ? I'm totally out of guesses what else can cause this. Certainly not a browser problem as the Problem is the same no matter if I use IE, Netscape, Opera or Neoplanet.

So for heavens sake can anyone give me a clue how to get in.

Hark- Sorry to hear about your problems with the site. I've never heard of anything like that before. Did you e-mail Smallworld to see if they could look into it?

Jay- I think Henry is brilliant and is just beginning to reach his vast potential. He plays on an excellent team that will score plenty of goals, even if Overmars leaves, and should be among the top 5 goalscorers in the league. That said, his price will probably keep him off of my team while I build up my roster value.

I think Henry is an excellent pickup. I also did some reseach on Rebrov from Tottenham. He seems to have started the preseason well and Tottenham has a favorable start of the season schedule. This als makes Totenham goalkeepers interesting but it is not clear if Walker or Sullivan will start in goal.

Hark,

My note from Don Marquis indicates that the game isn't for the Premier League itself, but is probably licensed; I don't see why they (PL) would block access for you. I don't think the PL game is even active anymore (I'll check in a few minutes, though).

You have no problem getting into the other SW sites?

I too had the problem with the browser locking up, and I live in the U.S. switching to Netscape somewhat alievated this problem, instead of the browser completely freezing it just has "errors on the page" something is up with that site in particular tho, the design is wacky. i've had no probs with any other sw sites

I have a question for you guys... who do you think will do better: G. Neville or M. Babbel ?

I have Neville, but I've heard that Babbel would be a much better pick up since he's with Liverpool who are a much better defender than Man U. I don't know what to do.

Jay- see post #11 by Hark

Personally I like Babbel better, although I haven't seen a lot of him. Man U haven't shored up their defense and, besides, I don't think Neville is all that great. He's been fortunate to have played on some very good teams and I think that has helped his reputation. I don't know how accurate Hark's assessment will turn out but Babbel is worth a try.

El Tel. Thanks for the Man U update. I really like Johnsen, hopefully he can get back to 100% soon. With him around Barthez should have a more solid defense in front of him. As for Cole, he looks like he's a lock for my team. Is Weah a definite starter now that he's with Man C?

From what I've seen McAllister will make the team El Tel. The ones that will suffer are Redknapp and Hamann. I don't think you buy a 36 year old player and just put him on your bench.
