I think if Barecelona can get motivated they have a terrific draw in the group stage. It's kind of a shame Chelsea and Liverpool were grouped together, though we know the story there. Would have been nice to see one of them in group H instead.

Regardless, it's a lot easier to predict Group Stage games than who the overall League winner will be.......to have money on Liverpool last year.....man.

I think Real Madrid are well placed this year (not that they aren't every year), but with Robinho and Baptista being added in the summer there attacking options will be even stronger than before (which was arguably already the best in Europe), and if Woodgate can get himslef fit then with Helguera, Salgado and Carlos they might actually have a fairly strong back 4 for once. But there are alot of really strong teams with a solid chance of winning it, Chelsea, Milan, Barcelona will all be there or there abouts.

Group Stage Predictions:

Group Winners:
Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona, Man Utd, Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Inter
Group 2nd Place:
Bayern, Ajax, Udinese, Vallareal, PSV, Lyon, Betis, Rangers

Although well placed, Real Madrid is not going to have an easy time at all, as Lyon and Olympiakos will give em a run for their money. Olympiakos especially, who just missed 2nd place by 1 point last year will make a run.
and how is liverpool not in your predictions? look fdor them to make more noise.

Group Winner Predictions

Barca, Milan, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U (their group is a joke), Real, Inter, Juve

2nd place winners,
Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool, Ajax, Benfica, Lyon, Porto, and a longshot but y not..Panathinaikos.

Should be interesting.

Lyon are playing well at the moment, Houllier is doing a solid job in charge there, but i think Madrid has too much quality for them, Olympiakos will be tough too, especially when playing at home.
Liverpool had a fantasic run last year, but were very close to elimination at the group stages, and arguably fortune was on their side to enable them to lift the trophy. I can't see them finishing above Chelsea, which makes today's game against Betis extremly important, i hope they get through, but i wouldnt be surprised if they finished 3rd in that group.

Agree that Liverpool has their work cut out for them. They have certainly not been at their best for some time. Will they regain form? When they do, it may be too late.

Rangers up 1-0 on Porto, that might be a shocker after Lyon...though Lyon was way past due, remmeber last year's dismantling of Werder Bremen by them, with liek a 9-0 aggregate? Unbelievable.

They've been very impressive, as if Essien meant little to them, which wasn't the case. I like it when teams can fill in gaps and use team play to continue winning. Of course, having the cash helps too.

Lyon have had a great start to there domestic season, whereas Madrid havent found there ryhtem yet, but even so 3-0 is a big shock, Tiago was bought in to replace Essien, he didnt get much of a chance during his time at Chelsea, but seems like he may be a good replacement though certainly not the same quality as Essien.
Nice to see Rangers leading, hopefully they can hold onto that and get there campaign off to a good start.

We all spoke to soon, lol. Pepe tied it for porto in the 47th, and liverpools lead is down to 1 goal...though it shouldn't be reason to panic, with Gerrard and Cicce on the bench, no need to worry for 'em. Haven't said this since '94 (NHL) but LETS GO RANGERS!

A very interesting day, considering most games were close throughout and nonetheless a dog fight. Rangers turned out to be a very pleasant suprise, as well as Rosenborg winning in the tough stadium of Greece. Nonetheless, Liverpool won, showing many doubters of them that they are back ;-) We await an even more eventful day tomorrow....when my Panathinaikos takes center stage @UDI!

Definately a couple of surprise results to start the competition with, most notably the Lyon result, but Liverpool have to be delighted with there win aswell, and really pleased that Rangers get going with a good win, tomorow's games should be interesting, can't see there being too many upsets, though i think Villareal could give Man Utd a good test.

Sparta v Ajax might be the best game of the day, seeing as how both teams are poised for a legitimate run at the group. Barca at Bremen should also be a dandy.

Riquelme should be fit to play tomorow, the Villareal coaches have said it will be his decision whether he plays or not, and Riquelme has said he will only miss the game if the injury gets worse, which is unlikely at this stage.

Bummer:

Villarreal playmaker Riquelme to miss United game

MADRID, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Villarreal's Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme will miss his side's Champions League Group D clash against Manchester United due to injury, the club said on Wednesday.

Riquelme had to be substituted after 25 minutes of his side's 1-1 home draw with Sevilla in the Primera Liga on Sunday, and has failed to recover from an ankle strain despite intensive treatment.

Coach Manuel Pellegrini could turn to Hector Font or Roger Garcia to replace the influential 27-year-old.

Alan Smith is set to play in Keane's absence, 3 years ago having Keane out would be a huge loss for Man Utd, but its not such a problem for them now, while he is still a great player he isnt the driving force he once was, id still prefer to see Smith being used as a striker, but he is adapting well to his midfield role, and i guess with Rooney and V.Nistelrooy upfront his chances there will be very limited.

I had heard he was being used there as an experiment. I'm very interested to see him in that role. I agree on Keane----still steady, but not dominant. It hurts their depth for sure. And depth is key to surviving home leagues and champion leagues concurrently.

A draw would be a really poor result for Arsenal, even with 10 men, Juve, Barce and Bayern all lead as expected, Udinese coasting at 3-0, bit of a surprise with Sparta Leading Ajax 1-0. Viera just sent off for Juve, but should be too late on to make a difference

I had Sparta favored to beat Ajax, Ajax got very lucky. Nothing much happening today besides that.

Alright, I held off long enough.....Chelsea loses to Real Betis? 10 yellow cards? Wow. And mad props to Liverpool who seem a different team outside of the EPL. And Real Madrid wins on an own goal and a Guti goal. They are showing depth right now as well as guts (or is it "gutis"? lol). Something AC Milan couldn't do.

There's no doubt in my mind that Liverpool will repeat. People can say as they want...they were in the same situation (if not worse) last year. Barca doesn't look bad though, and a Chelsea-Barca rematch for the openin round of CL is hot.

What a waste of a game. If anyone won that Chelsea/Barca game, it would've been a fluke. Of course how do you lose when a cheap red card is given to your opponent in the 36th minute?

Other than that, the rest of the games were close. Juventus stunned by 2 goals (87 and 90), but with 2 away goals they should have it wrapped up.

This champions league looks like it will come down to the wire.

On another horrible call, (Note Im an Arsneal Fan) does UEFA have any strict simulating penalties after the game that were promised in the last world cup?

Thats the one thing that always is real hard to see especially when a referee is behind, I just hate it when Simulation can ruin games and hope it doesnt become an issue in the WC.

Agree again, even after that beautiful goal my daughter was left to say it never should have happened.

World Cup referees get green light for more yellow, red cards

One change being introduced is probably the most problematic: The refs are under instruction to implement more forcefully the law that bans players from "diving," or simulating fouls.
