With Casillas, Ramos, Pujol, Cesc, Xabi and El Nino, Spain are
looking good for the final.

I was ready to support Portugal to meet Spain in the final but, now
the ungrateful Ronaldo has become enemy #1, my money is on
Germany.

YR, after watching my Tivo, I'm concerned about how well the Austrians are playing too. They were in the Croatian game the whole time and that first 25 minutes they could have and should have scored 3 goals. If the Germans allow them around the net like they let the Croatians, their Euro 2008 will most like be over. They seemed like they were keeping 8 guys around the middle of the field the whole game. No one was trying to get the ball to the goalie, and (as you could see on the replay of the rebound goal) no one was staying back when the ball did come into their zone.
Now I'm not one who knows a lot (or anything) about soccer strategy but in '06 the Germans played a fast pace high intensity style of soccer. They were trying to get to the goal and they'd create shots. The thing I saw in both games is when Schweinsteiger came in the intensity picked up, and he would try to create shots for his teammates. The only goal in the Croatian game was set up by him trying to penetrate the defense. Without him the Germans lose a lit bit of a spark, so it'll be interesting to see what happens in the Austrian game. I'm going to say right now, (a bold prediction/spoiler?) the Austrians will out shoot the Germans, and the Germans will still prevail, but it will be ugly.

Watching this Netherlands/France match made me realize that if the Dutch hold on to win, Italy and France are both likely out.

I mean, if you are the Dutch, you would have clinched 1st place already, so, you sit everyone against Romania and lose, putting Romania in with 5 points, vs the 4 points for the France vs Italy winner. I know it would be poor gamesmanship by the Dutch, but why would you ever play to win if a win gets you nothing, while a loss eliminates two of the top 5 teams in the world? All Italian fans better be rooting for the French right now.

I don't want to see a 2nd Gijon: group stage world cup 1982, Germany - Austria 1-0, both advanced to the next stage. the game is still known as the shame of Gijon because after the early goal they pretty much stopped playing. it was ugly.

I also believe that the Dutch are not such a team. there are others that would exploit this situation, but not the offensive minded Dutch. they will likely play with 5 bench players that can show the coach that they are better choices for the quarterfinal.

That is true YR, and I hope they don't give the game away, as I want that France/Italy game to mean something. But, if there is no positive for beating Romania, and Romania is playing for everything, I just don't see how the Dutch win, unless the Romanians just implode due to nerves.

In reality, Romania may be deserving to be the 2nd best team in the group. France has looked poor and Italy has looked average, IMO.

The Dutch are looking very good, and when you take into account the fact they are missing 3 of their top players, they are looking very very good.

I was watching the Spain/Sweden match today (which I know was on delay), and across the bottom of the screen rolls the final score. What a pisser. Can't they hold off on the final score of the game they are currently showing?

thats it. Germany was bad. We were worse. it was possible today, but we played our worst game at this Euro in the wrong game.

I blame it on our coach. we played a 4-4-2 system for the last few years only to change it to a 3-6-1 (5-4-2) in game 1 for this Euro. that can't work. not against Germany when your only striker is one head smaller than every German defender, except Lahm. I guess we need a new coach now.

Doesn't get any better than a survival game between France and
Italy and perhaps it will all be nothing if Rumania can beat the
dutch reserves.

RE: 31

I thought it was hilarious that both coaches were sent off at the same time.

I've watched pretty much all the games. The most dramatic was probably the comeback a few days ago. Down 2-0 and score two goals in the last few mins to win 3-2.

It's funny...at half time, the ESPN guys were saying even though it is 2-0, Turkey has a knack for coming back. He kind of gave a wink to Fouty as if to say we need your ratings please don't turn the channel. Then boom...boom...BOOM!!!

OMG!!!

I think this Croatioa-Turkey game is going to have to go on the list of my favorite games now. Incredible. Almost a full 120 mins with no goals then 2 in a minute--last in injury time to force penalty kicks. It was a last second goal. These games have been such a blast to watch.

Watched the first 15 minutes or so, and I thought Turkey was going to win--no scoring, but they were just parking in the box and Croatia looked a half-step slow. But both teams got good changes to score early.

I tuned in just before the teams came out of the tunnel. Why were the players taking the kids onto the pitch?

Russia played the better Dutch football today. I see them playing the final against Germany.

I think the fact that Russia had Guus leading the helm made all the difference in the world today.

Anyone else coaching, and Holland wins.

I'm at work right now unable to watch the game so I'm reading the minute-by-minute commentary (which is actually quite interesting) and I guess the video has cut from the game. Anyone watching the game at home able to shed some light on this?

all I can say is: there are thunderstorms all over Switzerland and Austria and there was a lightning stroke somewhere that shut the power down for a few minutes. so if the video is gone again thats the reason.

Turkey is better at the moment. Germany loses too many posessions too quick. both teams are trying to shoot from the outside because their defenses are standing too good.

The Ref has not its best day today. there should have been a penalty (incl. yellow) for the foul on Lahm and a short free kick for Turkey for a foul on Kazim.

video is gone again.

If Germany loses this game that statement is right. As I type this Turkey gets a goal in the final 6 minutes. Is that 10 straight games they score with under 10 to go, or 20?

So here's a question for you YR, the commentator said that "Germany are in the Euro 2008 final, with possibly one of the worst performances in the competitions history! Turkey have been robbed!!" Were they robbed by their own poor play or the refs?

Turkey should have scored more goals in the 1st half. they were the better team for a majority of the game, but as always: a game lasts 90 minutes and in the end Germany wins.

Germany did not show much on the offense. they had a few flashes but nothing spectacular. this game reminded me of their 3-0 win over Austria this spring. We played as good as Turkey in the 1st half and failed to score on I don't know how many chances and got 3 goals out of as many chances in the 2nd. but Germany was not really better. not even in the 2nd half.

now I see Russia winning it all. they played by far the best football in the quarterfinals and will repeat tomorrow against Spain.

That's what I've been thinking about with Germany the whole tournament. In group play they didn't really attack, and I thought "well they don't want to show their hand to early" and then the first round they were out shot 2-1 and still pulled it off some how. I really hope we see Russia, maybe they'll play a slow tempo game like they did in group, instead of the game they played against the Netherlands.

Same here, Mike D. I was following it on-line. Must have been wild to watch, and then with the outtages, crazy suspense.

I may catch the Russia-Spain game. My company, a large Euro-based investment bank (with a substantial presence in NYC) is actually showing it live in a large auditorium for anyone to watch, and inviting employees to do so. How cool is that? Folks on the trading floor watch all of these matches anyway.

I just wanted to leave work, but heavy rain, including hail, just started here in Vienna. if this continues it will be an interesting game today. or do we see a game tomorrow?

yesterdays problem with the video was because of an power outage in the UEAF International Broadcasting Center in Vienna, caused by a lightning. even the backup systems that are in place didn't work. they better learned from yesterday.

What was particularly annoying was that the ESPN commentators
Rae and Gray were clearly not at the stadium so they could not
give a commentary by phone when there was the power outage.
Why would ESPN not have their commentators at the game?
Were they at the ESPN studio in the US?

One of the great things about these tournaments (world cup as
well) is the fan enthusiasm and commentators should be
describing this atmosphere. So they should be at the games.

it is wonderful to see the youth of the world getting together,
especially from the old eastern communist block.

Commentators that are not at the event is fairly common for events that don't have huge draw domestically.

All of the F1 races are done by commentators who are at a studio watching the race via the video feeds. Granted they have a live pit road reporter live at the event, but not having the commentators at the event saves huge money.

rule 1: it is a [insert decision here] when the Ref calls it.

possible decisions are:
- yellow card
- red card
- penalty
- offside
- ball out of bounds
- goal

I haven't seen a penalty foul yet.

Well it's too bad Russia won't move on. It seems they have a big hole in their defense. Stick someone right in front of the net just outside the goal area and just start taking shots from there. Spain has taken 5 from basically the same spot on the pitch and 2 have found the back of the net.

Well I guess my post in 65 was half right. According to the commentator for this game:

Fabregas has been OUTSTANDING since he came on by the way. Spain haven't missed Villa - the tournament's top scorer don't forget - one little bit.

Any word in the telecast if Villa will be fine by Sunday? I find it hard to imagine that he'd miss this game unless he was hurt badly.

Such a disappointing game....?? ..... Russia seemed to be in
second gear...why?? I know Espana has a tough mid field but
this can not explain the poor performance of the Russians...what
happened to Arshavin?? he probably lost 10 million pounds in
his transfer value.

I guess in the end individual ability comes through.... there is no
doubt that Senna, Cesc, Silva etc are better players but I
asssumed that their tough seasons would leave them tired for
this tournament and the Russians would be mentally in better
shape.

My original projection (post 1) of Spain versus Germany is on
Sunday's menu.

I'm more surprised about Germany than I am Spain. It's been a fun tourney, with more twists and turns than our local creek.

Great call coldwater. I really thought Portugal would be there. And agreed on Russia. Saw the game last night, and felt they lacked emotion and played tight at times. They played ok in the first half, but not sharp, and a bad time for that.
