Coming back from my holiday I found this board pretty much dead. So I thought it would be a nice idea to start a new discussion. A discussion about our 'first time' with SW Premierleague. Since I brought up the idea I won't hesitate to share a few of mine. Hope we can learn from eachother cause it seems a pretty weird and hard to predict game.

Some of my findings:
1. Some off our sleeper picks rocketed out of the gate. Ronny Johnsen (who is now injured), Anderton and, yes, Frederic Kanoute all had great first matches.
2. Others were sitting on the pine. Cole, Gaza and Lesaux didn't perform. Heck LeSaux even put up a glaring -6!
3. It seems that looking at teammatchups is very profitable. Picking a defender or goalie from a strong team that plays a weak team (i.e Man U vs Bradford) will give better chances for a clean sheet. And picking up strikers gives you the opportunity of more goals. Generaly there are not to many stikers that will score goals at Highbury.
4. Moneymaking is buying the players that have performed (Stanic, Kanoute and Johnsen) but is not always smart concerning the upcoming schedule and cause to the fact that Stanic, for example, is not very likely to score twice again. Hey he might not even play in Chelsea's crazy system.
5. Cheapies on good teams are hard to find. Yes there are some cheapies on weaker teams that performed but Sunderland defenders can get shelled pretty easily as well.
5. Go for middle priced players! It's IMO the first SW game where middle priced players look interesting. This results from the 50M roste value with a lot of attractive players priced around 5M. Meaning you can buy almost get a good value at each spot. This would be an interisting hypothesis to discuss IMO.
6. All those weird stats make it interesting. Shots on target, passes completed, tackles etc. Scrambling midfielders seem to be an excellent fit for the scoring system.
7. One game does not mean a thing. Frank Lampard doing next to nothing doesn't mean he won't explode next game. Be patient with your players except when the ride the pine.

The results from my 3 teams: +-4500WWR, 291WWR, 91WWR.

Your turn to share!

1.Starters:Just have to get players on the pitch.This will require understanding rotations,home/away formations etc.I was frustrated last night to have both Dixon and Owen on the bench.Wenger is rotating and said he had no intention of Pirez or Lauren starting away at Sunderland.Houlier reckons he had success last season with 4-5-1 away,and will soften good teams up this way.Vialli says he is not rotating.(di Matteo midfield regular?).Good sources of players might be Spurs,Sunderland,etc. who neither have the players to rotate nor are in Europe.
2.Players.I've felt all along that Le Saux won't start until Babayaro goes to the Olympics.Lampard is carrying an injury.Cole can't start while Harry persists with 3 strikers.Gazza is far past his sell-by date-Expect Nyarko and Gravesen to centre the Everton midfield.Alpay and Vargas(IPO) look great mid-range price value.
3.Match-ups.I seem to have 8 trades for match-ups;the problem is next Saturday's fixtures look really tricky,with no 'cert' like Liverpool last weekend.
4.Suspensions.After Mr Poll's staggeringly incompetent display of refereeing last night,that makes 3 of these to be avoided.
For a UK soccer fan this is the best fantasy game yet.People in the pub last night couldn't understand my throttled scream of 'yes 30 points' as Hamaan whacked another free kick into Seamo's chest.Another tell-tale sign!

1. I agree that using trades, or should I say transfers, wisely for favorable match-ups will be very important, although this may not be the best way to make a lot of money. One strategy might be to use half your transfers to generate cash and the other half to get good match-ups.

2. Money-making might not be as critical as other SW sports given the number of good mid-priced players, as Edgar mentioned. However, the market has only been operating for a couple of days, so it's still unclear what this game's market patterns will be like (as far as days with the most transfer activity, price swings, etc.). I'm sure that like other SW games there will be at least a few obvious money trains that everyone picks up. Johnsen would have been a perfect candidate, except for his injury (BTW what is the extent of this injury?), but even then he's been a top money maker.

3. It's going to be tough, unless you have a accurate and reputable source, to know with any great certainty who will be on the pitch for a given game. European competitions, weather, tactics, little-known nagging injuries, and even manager whims will all influence last-minute roster changes and surprise us. Quality players who are certain to play almost every match, barring injury, will be valuable finds. It might be a good idea to invest money in a top-flight goalie (Barthez, Westerveld, etc.) who, because the position is less physically demanding than others, will be rotated out less often.
4. It's still very early in the season and it will be interesting to see unique quirks and trends of this game. This is going to be fun!

1) We seem to have a lot of trades for 11 players, with no equivalent of pitcher rotations to consider (or is there?)

2) As Edgar wrote: "Moneymaking is buying the players that have performed (Stanic, Kanoute and Johnsen)", but these should be players who you think will continue to produce and make money, not just those who had fluke games. Getting rid of Le Saux etc. won't hurt either!

3) I'm not sure about focussing on "matchups" or worrying too much about players starting every match. As last nights results show football is a very unpredictable game, especially at this stage of the season. It is much better to hold good players over a large number of games so that you get there high average number of points. Lauren coming on as a sub v Sunderland doesn't bother me too much after his performance v Liverpool!

4) It's fun isn't it!

Just goes to show you beginner's luck. I am at wwr 116!! Won't last, I know, but thank you all for your help.

First, someone suggested a link to Sportal. That seems to be an excellent site.

Second, can someone tell me why repricing is daily, but your roster is frozen for the week? What sense does that make or am I missing something? If you cannot get the stats for the guy until the next transfer period, why have daily repricing?

Does seem to be a fascinating, and unpredictable, game!

Is that true that rosters are frozen for the week? I've been actively trading and havent noticed ever not getting a players points.

Having to go invalid the first week because it just takes too long for those pages to load up is just too much discouragement for me. I've moved the team (finally) to an auto division, so there's now space for one more team in the RotoGuru.com division. Good luck, fellas.

M-maybe I am mistaken but I don't think so. It says transfers will not count until the next week's games. Therefore, a trade made today does not count until Saturday's games. Hopefully, one of the more experienced players will chime in on this.

Rules say it freezes for the whole week. You get points for your frozen team. VD is right trading doesn't matter for points right now. But moneywise it does make a difference.

I swapped Kanoute for Smith (Leeds), but held Johnsen. I've bought Wallcock(?) so one will play.

With Johnson continuing to increase in price I kept him.

Kanoute-was keeping him but after these boards guess I'll swap him-anyone know the extent of injury?

Traded Melchiot for Varga, Keane for Beckham and Smicer for Cole. The moves were money/schedule related, at least according to smallworld.

Any comments from you pros out there? I love this game. Just wish I knew more!

I looked around and noticed that no one has Hamann (Liverpool). Is there is a reason? He is playing next week is he not?

These are the moves I made today. Now I'm not an expert but thought you migh like to see .
Owen-----> Smith
Giggs-----> Beckham
Hasselbaink-----Cole
LeSaux---------> Haaland
J. Cole---------Kinsella

I am also making some trades to keep up with price changes. It's hard to have daily price change and weekly trades, or am I just being a cry baby?
Anyway my WWR is improving and my squad is now worth $52 mill.
Good luck this week everybody!

I'm keeping Johnsen, despite his injury. He should continue to make money, and even if he didn't he would still be a bargain.

I just went J. Cole->Anderton, Dyer->Cordone, Suker->Henry.

Cordone should get to start alongside Shearer while Cort is out with his hamstring injury (maybe 3 weeks?) and is cheap at 1.3M.
I wasn't sure who to drop between Suker and Owen but I chose to keep Owen, despite his falling price, because I have a feeling he'll have a good game against Southampton.

VIDevilRays: I just read that Varga will be out for 6 weeks due to injury (link below). Sorry to be the bearer of bad news:(

Sorry, I should have said that I also have kept Johnsen and Cordone.
Bubba, I agree that Owen is due, lets hope for your team it's now rather than later.
I also had a tough decision between Anderton and Kinsella, went with the latter just on a feeling he might have a big one (game, that is). :)

Thanks for the heads up Bubba. That's what trades are for!

I agree Frank P. Daily repricing but weekly freezes make no sense to me, although, as I think about it, it does add intrigue.

Won't LeSaux start once (whatever his name is) leaves for the Olympics?

More experience from the last games:
- Alan Smith and Cordone look great as cheap performers.
- Sure picks like Beckham produce points every week and are very hard to find. So better get them soon cause they will increase in price fastly.
- The game, as expected, is very unpredictable. It is, at least to me, very hard to pick the right players and predict match outcomes. Makes getting the sure picks even more important.
- Money making appears to be conflicting with points making. For example buying a cheap defender from a weak team that has scored many points and will play at Old Trafford next doesn't seem to be very smart pointwise but may earn you some money. What is the proper balance?
- Should you wait and sell an underperforming player or should you hold on. Again don't expect any clear answers. For example I held on to Desailly and he scored yesterday after two bad games. Als I held David Unsworth and he still hasn't performed.

Is this game a gamble or what?
