0 Subject: Week 2 Thoughts

I thought I'd start a new thread for week 2 thoughts (check out the thread "Your experiences so far" for Edgar's thoughts).

Some week 2 thoughts:

1) To Edgar's list of cheap performers, I'd add Michael Carrick. He hasn't gotten as much hype as fellow starlet Joe Cole, but thus far he's been a better buy. He came along strong the last few games of last season, after spending most of it sitting on the bench or on loan, and it looks like he's the real deal. Despite this praise, I won't buy him yet, in case he gets injured before the next match (see #4 below).

2) Sure picks are hard to find, so you'd best get on the bandwagon when one becomes obvious. However, since a lot of these play on teams in European competitions (I'm thinking of Beckham but there are others), it might be necessary to trade out of them temporarily if you hear that they might be kept out of the lineup to rest on a given week.

3) There seem to be as many mid-priced goalies as high-priced ones among the top point-getters so far in the young season. However, I think that as the season goes on the Barthez's and Westerveld's will come out on top because they will get many more wins. Another benefit of tying up big money on goalies is that, the nature of their position probably makes it less likely for them to get injured or be rested than a player running around on the pitch, tackling and being tackled.

3) I still believe that match-ups can be helpful. Case in point: I traded Suker for Henry because I preferred Henry v. Charleton than Suker v. Man U. and came out 84 points better.

4) The market is not as volatile as other SW games but it doesn't look like building a high roster value is as important as in other sports. The daily repricing does add another interesting level of complication. Do you exchange a money losing player with a top money-maker early, in order to max out money-wise, or do you wait to make a trade until later in the week, when you have a better idea of who's starting and who's injured? So far I've gone with the "wait-and-see" strategy and it's paid off.

5) It's a very good idea to check out the match previews on Friday or Saturday morning before settling on a line-up. I do this before making my weekly trades and it has helped a lot so far.

Good thread Bubba. I agree with your wait and see strategy. My roster value is around 52M on both my teams. Could be a lot higher if I traded for money. To encourage the discussion on matchups here's next week's:

Home - Away (all abbreviations)
CHA-SOU
TOT-EVE
LEE-MC
SUN-WH
CHE-ARS
LIV-AST
MU-BRA
COV-NEW
DER-MID
LEI-IPS

Looks like the sure thing is Manchesters United's match with Bradford. Meaning Beckham, Scholes and Barthez are good picks. Also picking up the goalie from Leicester seems like a good idea.

Just a reminder to everyone that there are no Premiership matches this week or upcoming weekend. The next matches will be on Wednesday, September 6.

I forgot to mention that, since we will have two new sets of trades prior to the next matches, it might be a good time to use trades for money-making and not have to worry about on-field performance. Titus Bramble (who?) just went up 120 000, so maybe I'll trade Traore (who will lose his spot when Ziege is ready) to get this guy, and then trade him next week.

Might be a good idea. But away to Leiceester doesn't seem like a good matchup. You're right in Traore though. Why not get Ziege if you have the monay cause I think he will have an important role in the team. But maybe you'll need trades later on. Don't know yet, already spent some trades knocking out the dead wood out of my team.
I'll think about Bramble.

Fascinating game. I also find that the weekly freeze, but daily repricing, adds intrigue. Since your roster is frozen for the week you can trade solely for money and, using your trades wisely, trade again before the roster freeze while, hopefully, getting the points from the player of choice.

Thoughts from a newbie? I agree that a wait and see approach is prudent in light of all of the changes that seem to happen. I also agree that, since you will have two transfer periods before the next games, it's a very good time to transfer for money. Traded Anderton for Cordone yesterday just for that purpose. Matchup trading is also prudent.

In a lot of ways it is no different than other smallworld games in that you pick your spots. Some slots for money and hopefully gain points, and some slots for the guarantee of performance.

Hope I can contribute more in the future. Thanks to all for your help.

My week 2 thoughts are black. On each of my teams there seems to be a major scoring inaccuracy.Silvinho seems not to be credited with either his goal or the 3 conceded.Rowett is not credited with a clean sheet.I've e-mailed member services at SW.At the moment I'm not a happy fantasist.Anyone else got any problems?

My two quids worth:

I've used / will use 5 trades today for the following:

Westerveld -> Flowers, for money short-term and ? long-term. While "the Barthez's and Westerveld's (Hello Ron!) will come out on top because they will get many more wins", you've got to ride the players who will get money AND points.

Wallwork and Adams -> Bramble and Venus. Money, plain and simple, but imagine the points from a 0-0 when they play Leicester.

Stanic (injured) and Lauren (profit-taking) -> Beckham and Cordone. Money and points for some time to come.

That gives me 8 of the top 15 money makers on trade day and for the next week (at least).

With matches next Tuesday and Wednesday Saturday's Freeze is important. Remember that trades made "in time" for those matches will not kick-in until next Saturday.

One more thing: I've mentioned it before, but I think that spotting "match-ups" is over-rated. Nothing yet has convinced me that I'm wrong to think that "football is a very unpredictable game, especially at this stage of the season. It is much better to hold good players over a large number of games so that you get there high average number of points." Henry got more points than Suker because he's a better player. If you disagree, please explain!

Sure Henry is a far better player. But playing Charlton at home will give him a better chance to score then playing Leeds away. So looking matchups is kindof playing the percentages. But you're very right in stating soccer is impredictable. But I still wouldn't pick up a Bradford defender going to Anfield next week. It's the same as picking up a Coors pitcher.

El Tel: I haven't noticed any scoring problems, but maybe that's just because I only eyeball my points. Good luck with solving your problem, though.

Roo: I agree strongly with the premise of holding good players over a long time. That is the basis for doing well in any SW game (apart from money). However, if you have the means (trades+money) why not trade a player to gain the advantage of a match-up? There are obviously teams against whom it is harder to score. Last season the best team for goals-against (Liverpool with 30) allowed 47 fewer goals than the worst (Watford with 77). Why not try to take advantage of this? I realize now that my example of Suker->Henry was flawed because Henry is a far better player, possibly the best striker in the Premiership. But what about if (and I'm just pulling these match-ups out of the air), on a given week, Henry plays Liverpool and Chelsea while Shearer (roughly equivalent price/talent as Henry) plays Southampton and Charlton? I think I'd take a chance that the latter would be more favorable for points, even if it were just 20-50 points more. As the season progresses those points will add up and might be the difference between a top-10 finish or a top-100 finish. Just my 2 cents worth. :-)

With my limited knowledge I would have to agree that, given one's transfer situation, matchups must be taken advantage. Of all the players on my roster the only player I am inclined to keep for every fixture is Barthez. Although there will be better goalie matchups it appears that your tranfers are better used taking advantage of those matchups at your other positions (unless of course you have excess transfers).

Anyone agree or disagree?

Prompt response from David Miller in the SW Technical Dept-They are aware of the problem and will update stats as soon as possible. Now I wonder what they can do to get that Wuz-boy Ginola to play. For me he ees not worth eet.

I'm sticking to my guns (or my top Gunner). Henry scored 4 times against Leeds and Chelsea last season, Shearer didn't score against Watford or Wimbledon.
Class will out - save your transfers for improving your team or making money.

BUTT

(a terrible attempt at gurupian humour, but(t) I think he has to have Keane's spot for the next three games).
The big issue I've wrestled with today is Johnsen.
Stam says he's out Wednesday.Johnsen has stayed back from international duty and is responding to treatment-but we've heard that before!Took him on one, passed on the other.Mr. Decisive aka
