0 Subject: RIHC 2016-17: Draft Rationales

This thread will contain all of the individual pick rationales for the 2016 RIHC draft. RIHC managers should supply those rationales in the Rationale Collection thread. You will not be able to post directly into this thread.

I expect that this thread will be updated daily.

For the second year in a row, I was fortunate enough to get the 1st choice in the draft selection " lottery ". Last year I opted for the top selection and rode Steph Curry to the top. This year, to me the selection wasn't quite as clear cut, but arguably Steph ( with the addition of KD ), Westbrook ( minus KD ) and Harden ( now supposedly playing the point in D'Antoni's up tempo system ) are the top three choices. I opted for the 3rd pick, knowing I'd be thrilled with any of the above, but maybe secretly hoping I could jump on the Curry train again.

No doubt my favorite NBA player to watch and root for, I welcome back Steph from my 1st place finish last year. Yeah, I get it, GSW replaced their worst starter with one of the NBA's top 5 players, IMO.

But that's OK, Steph topped his NBA MVP season of two years ago, and posted even better numbers, if that was even possible. Imagine, 30 ppg, 5.4 RB's , 6.7 dimes, 2 steals and 5.1 treys ( yikes ). All while shooting 50% from the floor and 90% from the line. ESPN's player rater had him so far ahead of #2, that even with a slight regression due to the addition of Durant, he'd still put up MVP caliber #'s. I almost feel at pick 3, I got him on sale.

I'm rolling with Step again and have no complaints

I was very pleased to end up being able to draft 4th despite being 5th on the draft order. I do see a defined top 4 this year, so this made my job really easy.

A very easy pick. There are some minor concerns about shots to go around, but hoping for efficiency gains to outweigh those issues. I did consider KAT here briefly, but it just seemed too insane to pass on last season's #2 8-cat asset at this spot.

A few other points - I rarely come out on top when drafting beside Dave R, so hoping for a change of luck this year. Also a little disappointed to not nab one of the elite 3 PGs, but honestly that was a hope rather than expectation, and based on past drafting tendencies, I suspected Dave would not leave a PG on the board, especially Steph.

I took pick #5, because that was the highest available slot. I view the top-5 players to be the superstars. Players 6-10 are all great players too. I was worried that I might damage my brain if I had to pick between any of them. So I opted for the easier pick ... #5.

I knew my pick was going to be Durant or Towns. Win-win for either scenario. But I was hoping for Towns, because he is in a tier of his own at Center. As a rookie, he averaged 18.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.7 blocks. And shot 54.2% from the field, 81.1% from the free throw line and 34.1% from 3-point range. If he can improve on any of those numbers, I'm getting great value at #5.

Simply put, perfect fit for a roto league.

In the first round you can't make mistakes, you must go safe and Leonard is a safe pick.

1.10 Cousins, Demarcus - SAC - C
I took pick #10, because it was the Highest available.

At number 10 I was happy with Cousins. Hope to get 20-10, shouldn't kill me at the line. I had him as a solid #2 center if not 1B. Thought about Whiteside, had him last year, gonna miss those blocked shots.

1.11 Whiteside, Hassan - MIA - C
I ended up with the 11th pick, but that was fine. I was hoping to be near one end or the other, as I’ll be drafting from the road for at least the first 10 rounds, so it will help to be able to queue up my picks in pairs.

In advance of the draft, I targeted Whiteside for pick 1.11. When the pick arrived and Antonio Davis was still available, I stopped to reconsider. But I decided to stick with the plan.

And the plan this year is to punt free throw percent. I’m hoping that this will lead to top rankings in blocks, FG%, and (hopefully) rebounds, building up enough margin to take on some weaker shooting guards in the later rounds to prop up scoring, assists and treys. We’ll see.

Whiteside should be “the man” in Miami this year, with some projections approaching 20ppg, 15 reb, 3.5+ blocks, and 60+% FG.
