19 posts and no duplicates (aside from the braggarts in the today's action thread ;). Probability says there's a 50/50 chance of duplicates in a group of 28 (or was it 30?). Eac person afterward only increases the chance.

With the old pen and paper, the formula for the probability that two people share out of a group of x people (n is one less than x), assuming 366 possible birthdays is:

n!*(366-n)!/366!

Now we need one hell of a calculator to figure it out.

With the fairly recent birthday into the big 30's, I was thinking back to what age I thought "being old" was, at various points (ages) in my life. Definitely an evolving thought. Now, I think I'll just say its "100", and gun for making it to that age!

1-[364*363*...*(366-n)]/[365^(n-1)] - Not including Feb 29.

Or...

1-[365*364*...*(367-n)]/[366^(n-1)] - Including Feb 29, and assuming birthdays on Feb 29 are just as likely as every other day.

At 20, the probability is .706.

The flaw in my original formula was I was computing the odds that the nth person resulted in the first match.

You know you are a Gurupie when a simple thread like asking when everyone's birthday is becomes a statistics class.
