Just got back from classes recently, and i'm just overwhelmed at how this small college town in the midwest is pulling together.
Men, women, children, sitting on corners merely waving the US Flag.
Red Cross centers so packed, they have run out of bags.
Fraternity/Sororities at local college collecting money for victims.
In my 34 years of life, haven't seen America pull together as one so strongly. It's an amazing site to me, and is why i'm proud to be an American.
No country can rally around it's flag and symbol of freedom, in the midst of tragedy, stronger then the USA.
So many things daily pull as away from each other as brothers and sisters. Politics/Religion/Race etc, but when push comes to shove... The bottom line is "Don't mess with the US"

On another note, as for the sporting events this week, weekend or next. At first I thought it was important for these games to be played and to go on with life. But then I took a step back and realized, sports in general is a recreation... It's not a necessity... The only thing sporting events would do for me is satisfy a fringe benefit I'm lucky to have in life. But it's a benefit I can easily live without, unlike the families of these victims, who have no choice but to morn and realize they will never see a family memeber again. |

I work in office of 100 people. Out that 100 people, 91 wore red white and blue. Out of the 9 who did not wear red white and blue, 3 are wearing a combo of 2 of the colors. Out of the 6 who did not wear red white and blue, or red and white, or blue/whtie etc. 6 have American Flags pinned to their shirts.
That accounts for 100% of the office population in this office honoring our dead and our country.

When I bought my house in New Jersey about five years ago, the first thing I did was put a flag out front, and I've had one flying there nearly every day and night since. Just got a new one a few weeks ago, and it's almost too big for the pole!
I'm pleased to see Americans pulling together, and non-Americans pulling for us. This is a great nation, and there's a singular opportunity for us all to become part of a new "Greatest Generation."

On the other hand - gas price gaugers have been at work here too. Tuesday afternoon some created a panic by raising prices to $3.50 gallon. I'm committed to boycotting them for life. Called them in to all the Lexington radio and TV stations. One of our local stations is listing the names of local price gaugers on their local news broadcast.

The one thing that I can't get out of my head since Tuesday (besides the attack) is the song by Lee Greenwood, 'Proud To Be An American'. (And I don't even like country music singers.) (Well, besides Faith Hill and Shania Twain.) ;o)

Good. Some Cleveland stations which raised prices got police visits and the prices came down. Nothing unusual here in NJ, though many supplies (flashlights, batteries, bottled water, etc) have been purchased in bulk and sent to the City. Own own tiny fire department went to Liberty State Park (across the river from NYC) with other county FDs to help.

State Attorney General in TX is taking names, etc of price gougers of all kinds and promises to prosecute vigorously!
I have also seen a renewed spirit of patriotism. As I just heard on news talk radio..."The next time an American airliner is hijacked, the passenger reponse is likely to not be what the hijackers had in mind."
I have on white/blue today with red/white/blue ribbons pinned on. No one else in my little business bothered. But, I just about expected that, they live in their own little world. As long as they take care of #1...to hell with the rest.
sigh...I need to find a new job!

katiex, don't make that kind of judgement! I doubt there is any American out there who isn't thinking out this tragedy every few minutes. Just because they didn't think to wear flag colors (maybe there were too many other things on their minds about the tragedy this morning) doesn't mean they don't feel the same way you do, inside.
You job is not to pass judgement; it's to help rally Americans. Think of a way to remind them of how important outside solidarity is to many as well as inside.

I didn't wear those colors to work, but it doesn't mean this tragedy isn't on my mind constantly. My flag is up at home and my heart is with all those who have lost loved ones and friends. As PD said, don't judge people by an outward appearance. Just go down to the local blood bank and you will see all kinds there, giving blood. They all look the same right now though, they look like Americans.

I won a flag 3 years ago and held on to until I bought a house. In june it took its place on my front porch. The past few days I've seen this town turn red white and blue. Local radio stations are selling flags for donations. A couple of hours made $10,000 for the Red Cross.
I think eveyone had their rally hats on...
I AM Proud to be an American.....

Middle schools were doing the same around here with red/white/blue day. In Athens, GA where my mom works (UGA) The faculty and staff stopped working for a moment all over campus and went out side for a moment of silence.

I think we all like that right now, any song that's patriotic in nature stirs emotion. I suggest you stay away from Neil Diamonds "Coming to America". Or you be the same way. :-)

I've heard some governors/mayors make mention that these people will be proscecuted when things calm down. Price gougin' during nation tragedy's is illegal.

I'm not from the United States but a small province in Canada, Newfoundland to be exact. I live in the capital of St. John's which is a city of around 200,000. Just wanted to let you guys know that all the people that have been diverted here on planes have been treated graciously. Newfoundlanders, as are all Canadians, are known for their hospitality and generosity. Many of the families have beeen taken in by the local people and given food, supplies and places to rest.Red Cross clinics have also been full and donations have begun to be collected. I'm sure the stories around the rest of Canada are similar. Just wanted to let you know how much this has affected the world not only the U.S. You have our support and our prayers.

Bad news to report though. In Oak Lawn(near or in chicago) about 700 people were marching towards a mosque(excuse my spelling) chanting: "BULL S#!%!!!" This it NOT what our country needs to do right now. Luckily the police handled the situation and no harm was done. PLEASE MOURN BUT DONT TAKE YOUR AGRESSION OUT ON THOSE WHO DONT DESERVE IT!

I've done some natural disaster relief in my time, and I have to say that a community never forgets those that try to make a buck during times like this. They always remember those groups that lend a hand, by donating food, chainsaws & other tools, or just a physical body to move things.
I guarantee those gas stations will have new ownership or be out of business within 2 years because of this.

I am not there, but where my parents live in Iowa, 2 gas stations jacked up gas prices on wednesday, and there is already a boycott on those 2 businesses.

Scary, Beast. Now is the time for us to come together as a community. The time for division and argument is in the past. Many Arab-Americans died in the attacks and their blood is just as red as anyone else's.

Yes, being only a white kid in high school I have a close friend who was born in America but of parents from Pakistan. He's a full blood American and i would hate for any unintelligent kid not understand the truth and take action against him. So far, so good and I can only hope for the best.

speaking of making a few bucks on these type of things, beware of where you send your money to for donations and stuff. Dont be fooled by scams in emails, i bet u there are alot of sick people out there who are "selling" you products in order to send "proceeds to those who need it." So if u plan on donating, send them to places that are for sure genuine.
Just a heads up fellas (just some nfo from my news radio station)

A local TV station here in Spokane started selling red, white and blue ribbons for $1 Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. At last count, I believe they'd already raised $40,000.

Same problem happening here in Southern Missouri.
People calling homes pretending to be Red Cross and asking for donations.
Just so everyone knows, Red Cross has reported that they are not doing a phone camphaign (spelling).
