Subject: Records/milestones to watch for this year

Anyone know of what career highlights we can look forward to in 2002?

Here's one. If Maddux wins 15 games this year, he'll tie Cy Young's record of 15 straight years with 15 or more wins.

Canseco is 38 HRs from 500 and 58 SO from 2000.

Biggio needs 3 HBP to get 200 for his career (two more than Frank Robinson); he's the active leader and currently in 7th place all time.

Clemens is 194 away from allowing 3500 hits in his career. He's the active leader. He's also the active leader in IP, and is 113 away from 4000.

Chuck Finley, bless his heart, is tied for 35th all time in home runs allowed, at 291. Let's go, Chuck! Doesn't 300 get you in the Hall? Maybe I'm just confusing stats...

Ricky Henderson, all-time leader in SB (1395), walks (2141), and runs (2248) should extend all those. He's got exact 3000 hits. Ten more HR will give him 300, which surprised me. He's 42 away from 900 extra base hits.

Had a hard time trying to find out how many home runs Piazza has as a catcher, but I found this:

Last year, 'on September 30th, Mike Piazza hit his 306th career home run as a catcher, tying him for third on the list of home runs by a catcher with Yogi Berra.

Piazza still trails Johnny Bench (327) and Carlton Fisk (351).'

Piazza could pass Bench this year for most home runs by a catcher in the NL.

Griffey, Jr (7) could tie Frank Robinson (8) for the ML record for most career home runs on opening day.

Because of interleague play Piazza could extend his NL record of most ballparks with a home run (22). Rafael Palmeiro has the AL record with 27 and Ellis Burks has the ML record with 39.

The most home runs hit during a career by a designated hitter, Harold Baines with 225. Anyone close?

home run records

As a Met fan, I'm still waiting for a $#%@&* Met no-hitter. D'oh, jinxed it already. ;)

Ooops. Regarding the Most Ballparks with a home run, I think NL and AL refer to NL and AL parks. I guess there would have to be some major construction going on for Piazza to extend his NL record.

He does visit some ballparks for the first time in his career this year. But, not enough to surpass Burks.

Here's a site similar to baseball-reference.com, probably worthy of bookmarking, I read about it in Michael Hiestand's column at USAToday.com, the site is http://www.retrosheet.org/.

Looks like Canseco won't be reaching anymore milestones (or the HOF for that matter). rotowire reports:

Canseco was released by the Expos on Wednesday after declining a minor-league assignment. Playing the field has never been his strong point and if Canseco is going to make it back to the majors it will likely be with an American League club as a DH. At 37 years-old his goal of reaching 500 career home runs (currently at 467) looks to be in jeopardy right now.

re: HRs by a DH - Edgar has 258 career HRs, though I imagine a handful of those came during his ill-fated spells at 3B.

LOL! To give you some idea of how long it's been since I've played a roto league, the last team I had, I had edgar as a rookie and he was being platooned because they thought he couldn't hit lefties!

Mets pitcher Al Leiter became the first pitcher in the Major Leagues to defeat all 30 clubs Tuesday night.
