Subject: Home Run in first at bat

In Guru's blurb today, he asked if anyone knew who the 17 players to hit a home run on the very first pitch they faced. Yankees.com says that Thames was the 32nd player to do it on the first pitch and the 82nd player to do it in his first at bat. link.

Cannot find that list of first pitch hitters. However, I was able to find the list of the 82 players who hit a home run in their first at bat.

According to baseball-almenac.com, you can find the list of hitters who accomplished this feat here.

John Miller was the other Yankee. He only had on other hit as a Yankee and only 1 other homer in his short otherwise unspectacular major league career.

The ESPN recap cited the number 17 (players who had homered on their first major league pitch). I heard the same number mentioned on the Yankees radio broadcast last night, too.

I should have looked at my own link more closely. They have in bold the 17 players who did it on the first pitch.

Not many guys on that list who went on to become good hitters.

It's a wonder that more aren't hit out, IMO. The first pitch is probably the best a new guy will see.

home run in final career at bat. Therefore, on final major league pitch.

The above mentioned John Miller is on this list too meaning he hit two career home runs, one on his first at bat, one on his last.

Yan, as of now, has hit one in his final at-bat as well. Until he has another one.

Haven't checked the links but if I'm not mistaken Travis Fryman hit a homerun in his first major league at bat.

I vaguely remembering listening to the game on the radio when I was about 9.

There was a kid from Mississippi named Will Clark, who faced Nolan Ryan in the Astrodome in his debut and knocked it out of the park. I remember the swing, as I was there photographing it. No one has heard of the kid since ... :>
