I'm stealing Senor Rabbis' idea:Me:Question - how are we designating our keepers? I had to delete a bunch of my emails from this thread, and don't remember if it was covered.
The brilliant rabbi quervo: i think we need to get a thread on rotoguru going... so here it is...

Funny, I was just scribing my email to the group. One week from tonight is the deadline to declare. What is the usual method? Do we email the group, which could open up to somebody holding out. Or, everyone can send them to me, and I will post a new chart. This is my first keeper, so I don't what is typical. Whatever the group decides is fine with me.

I also made a trade with someone I think. Maybe Mith? Please confirm what it was. Thanks.

I feel that you can change as often as you like prior to the 2/20/04 deadline, or 2/19/04 11:59:59 pm eastern. Once you tell the group on that day, 2/20/04, we will hold you to it.
I also feel that if a player comes down with a serious injury (Boone/Nenn) during Spring Training, prior to drafting, you will have a one time exception to choose a replacement from your final roster. But, that player had to be on your off-season roster.
Feel free to change until then.

Mostly because I am crazy with work and wedding stuff. I don't really have all that much time right now. I need to have everything done at least a week before the season starts, if not two weeks. The closer we get to opening day, the closer we get to wedding day. I really wanted it done two weeks ago. We pushed the draft to the latest possible available weekend, which is why there is a large gap.

Here are my finalized keepers:
SS: Nomar Garciaparra OF: Vlad Guerrero OF: Vernon Wells RP: Eric Gagne RP: Keith Foulke SP: Roy Oswalt SP: Carlos Zambrano SP: Joel Pineiro
Man did I have trouble choosing these guys. I wanted to keep Hinske. Now I have to draft a whole new infield aside from Nomar plus a MI and CI. But the pitchers just seemed a little bit better keepers and it wasn't fun choosing between Zambrano, Pineiro, Wolf, Sabathia, Meche, and Buehrle. Ahh I need to make some trades! ;)

I do not think this is a good idea. It is not in the best interest of the group to let this happen. Because the manager had declared his keepers, whatever players were on his team are officially in the FA Market. If I wanted, right now, I could figure out who dropped who, and offer any manager a trade. It opens up to collusion, so I am going to say no. Had this happened 24 hours ago, I would not have cared.

I'm not accusing anybody of anything. I said it opens up to collusion. Remember, I didn't post my keepers yet either. I could have just as easily taken advantage. It had not been brought up until 9pm tonight. The manager who receives your pick clearly has an advantage, because he has nothing to lose. I am very sorry.

Sorry boys, the woman had taken control of the computer yesterday. She goes on a bridal chat room, so I took advantage and treated myself to some quality XBOX time. You thought some of the arguements on this board were pointless? OOOfffffaa. Every now and then I hear things like, "Mikesgal_1234 is so funny. She has 6 bridesmaids and they are all wearing peuce. Can you believe it? Then PrettyGreenEyes235 makes fun of her about it. The girls on this board are so catty. I'm going to say something." It's like a yenta-fest.
OK, here it is. I tried to get every players available position, but I'm sure I missed some.
As I also mentioned in the email, when we were picking days to start the draft, I thought we were choosing from Fridays, not Saturdays. I do not think I realized there was a leap year. I personally would like to start on Friday because it gives us another night to work with. Obviously, if this is a problem for even one manager, I completely understand, and we will start the 13th.
What do you guys think?

However, I can keep in touch via cell phone if some one is willing to work with me> Golffreak...are you willing to repeat what we did in the GuruKeeper draft? Or anyone else. from my email:
i'm cool on friday. i will literally be out ALL DAY on saturday (probably from 9 am until about 3 am), with no computer access. i will have my handheld, which has limited AIM access (meaning if i keep AIM on non-stop, the battery drains in about 45 minutes) and email access, as well as my cel. i will bring my charts and such with me, but i will need a proxy to either call me or AIM me when i'm up to update me on who's been taken and so i can let that person know who i'm picking... any volunteers?
also, on the voting for draft - the 8 (including myself) i had were: for snake - Matt K, Matt N, Ryan... for non-snake - Wiggs, MITH, Mark, Donny, me...
that's actually 5 for non-snake, 3 for snake.
i still have the emails if someone would like to see them for verification.
weird that i'm still supporting the non-snake side, since snake helps me immensely.. :o)

SAT/SUN 10AM-11PM - MON-FRI 6PM-11PM
I WILL NOT DISCUSS TIME LIMITS UNLESS SOMEONE BECOMES A PROBLEM. LESS THEN 5 MINUTES PER PICK SHOULD BE GOOD, IF YOU SHOULD OCCASIONALLY NEED UP TO 10 MINUTES, IT WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM.
Was this the same time limits as last year? Sat/Sun seems a little extreme. 13 hours straight. 2 days of that will put me in the Doghouse. Or in court. And don't want to put the kids though that. I'm fine with 1 of those days but both isn't going to work. Sorry.

It's from stealths keeper list page. I second Golfs concerns - especially given the nature of my CPU availability. It's far easier for me to access one in the PM. If we're strict about the time limits, many of my picks will have to be thru a surrogate.

especially since i'm going to be out of the house for large parts of both days, 5 minutes per pick in the first few rounds is extreme.
several of us here just finished a 25 round draft in less than 3 weeks, and the first few rounds actually had a 10 hour limit...
i'm rooting for something much more leniant - maybe picks every four hours. that was i can call in every so often just to check in - otherwise, i'm gonna be bothering someone every few minutes with a phone call...

I am very sorry, I wrote that at 2 am. Don't hold me to it, I am very open to suggestions. I have no idea exactly how we drafted last year, to my fault. Trust me when I say, my schedule is more crazy then anyones. I just want people to be around to keep it moving. I really don't want to police anything, I just want to get everything done as quick as possible.
What are some reasonable suggestions to peak hours, and time limits? In another league, we have a one hour time limit, but that seems a little long for our group for peak hours.
Please offer suggestions.

I am sorry here guys...I am really slow when it comes to remembering this stuff out or figuring out less than the stated obvious.
(1) What day are we starting the draft?
(2) Did we wind up snake or top to bottom?
(3) Have time limits been imposed?
I will be out of country 3/3 through 3/7 and on the road (but can work thru GF on phone) 3/9 through 3/12.
Outside of that .. let's rock'n roll

We're starting 3/13.
I believe we are doing a snake by narrow majority decision.
I believe Stealth would like some more input as to what the group wants regarding time limits during the draft and peak hours during which those limits will be enforced.

actually MITH, i think it's 5-5...the last count i had, posted in an earlier post, was 5-3 for non-snake.
i'm not sure how i feel about clocks on the weekend. i'd like to see the draft progress at a reasonable pace, but during the week i think make a 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. eastern clock, with a four hour limit, will go pretty smoothly.
whoever is picking before me, i may give them my celly and have them call me during the first weekend of the draft, since, as i said, i'll be out a lot. it's the big Ring of Honor show on saturday, and then sunday is Wrestlemania, and while i'm not going to that, i've been invited to a cool shindig doing on that day for a "pre-Wrestlemania" party...

Myself MON-FRI 6PM-11PM (isnt a problem 1-2hr would be nice)
SAT/SUN 10AM-11PM (would need a bigger window 5hr)
IF we go 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. eastern clock MON-FRI ( i would need a 5hr window) no access from 9 am-2pm (C)
Can and will leave a Q. But do not enjoy sharing more then 2 players at a time.

I think having a 2 hours window per pick should be ok as long as people do not take advantage of it. I also think if you leave a queue with someone, a reasonable one, you should get longer to pick your next player. Ex. you have pick 1 and you take Arod and you leave a queue with pujols and helton for pick 2 and they are gone then that doesnt count, but if you leave a 10 player queue and they are all gone I would suggest alittle more time. I know personally for me I am not always around a computer while I am working, but I do check regularly throughout the day.

I'll throw my $0.02 in there. I can draft anytime at any point in the day for however long. Luckily for me and the college life my computer stays on all day and if we decide on something I can be around at whatever point. So to make things easier for some of you who are busy I am game for anything.

For me, Mon through Fri 9-5 will be crazy for me. I will usually have a queue with me, or will usually be able to peel away for 5-10 minutes for a pick if I had to, but even that may not be possible on any given day.
For peak hours, kinda the same. Some nights I will be looking forward to getting away from the "planning" so I will be gladly glued to the computer. But there will be nights I cannot get to a computer. Those nights I will respect the group by either having a queue and my cell with me, or leave one with MITH.
I would rather keep it to a one hour limit for peak hours.
The snake issue has not been resolved. I think we should just revote. I vote snake, even though it affects me the least either way.

Not sure what you mean by a chart to show the difference. Last year we ran a snake draft, but I think the thinking is that after the first year of a keeper leaue, the draft order should be the same for each round.
I was one of the people who changed my vote from snake to non-snake, after reading through some of the opinions expressed here.

Let me be clear...non-snake (top to bottom) Snake is OK fo r the first year, but with keepers, to level the playing field, the guys at the bottom have to receive an advantage, otherwise, it is like MLB where the winners each season win the next season and the losers continue to lose.
Non-snake

The new tally, thus far:
bottom-top (2): MITH, TAX snake (1): STEALTH
I will email the group to check in.

I have a problem. This is all too logical for me. What am I missing?
With 80 players (keepers) off the board a snake draft kills last years worst teams. The purpose of a snake draft is to equalize between the 1st and last draft positions. That happenned last year and the superior drafting teams won and got to keep @ a third of their roster.
To equalize talent, this draft MUSTbe a top-bottom, where the ignobility of finishing at the bottom earns a better draft position and a chance to improve his team by having a draft advantage.
Equalizing the draft positions with a snake ensures that the bottom teams will have far less chance to be competitive and the best teams will have an equal shot at the talent, even though their teams already have better talent. The chart of keepers as ranked by ESPN is absolute proof of my theory.
Rate the keepers
There is no way Deetroit Isotopes is going to equalize his talent in a snake draft and he will not be competitive in the league. He will have a difficult time in a top to bottom, but still is afforded a better opportunity.
If the purpose of the league is to protect the talent level of the best teams, then vote for the snake draft.
If it is to help improve talent on the bottom teams so every team can be competitive, then has to be non-snake.

I will not be bullied. By BOLD theats. I'm like the Yanks. I cant help that I have better talent. Endless resources. Some teams MUST be on the bottom. So my team looks better near the TOP. Due to the force of your BOLDING I will NOT take you phone Q. SO in ending I would to vote we boot Detroit Isotopes off the Island. And so you know, "Im just kidding". I Change my Vote to Non-Snake. BEcause as a Brewers fan. I feel your pain. Because of years and years of bottom feeding.
ps $$$ still hasnt hit my PayPal account.

O.K. Top to Bottom sounds like the fair thing to do. Any time for me is good for drafting. Any time limits will work. It'll be interesting to see how the top to bottom affects the league standings.

That gives a 5-2 majority to non-snake, with Tree (who I believe has already expressed his preference for non-snake) yet to vote. That should settle it.

GF.. the bolding was necessary because I didn't know how to make the type larger for your old eyes. Also, I figured it would attract the little attention you possess to the important thoughts:>)
But most of all, never tell a Texas Rangers fan about suffering. We never assembled a Harvey Wall Bangers outfit. Then again, we never changed leagues. The highlight of our off season was dumping the "best (in somebody's mind) player in baseball" to (according to team owner Hicks) improve the team.
ps actually the $ were taken out of your paypal account...to be spent on frozen drinks on the Nassau beach this week. By the way, how is the weather in Freezeconsin ;o)

If we could work out a revenue sharing deal I might consider voting for the snake, and keeping a bottom feeder team, golf.

It's in the VERY HIGH 30's. :P Ill pass on the "revenue sharing". I've seen 1st hand how the Brewers spends theres. After reading some posts I made in other threads. About if its more then 4 keepers in SHOULD be a Non-Snake. Thought I better buy into my own words.

first few rounds should be the easiest to deal with a long queue. If you're willing to carry one around, I think everyone else would appreciate it.

I'll be doing the same thing as tree on Saturday - carrying around a cell and hoping there is no issue with my prerankings. I'll email my list and phone number to stealth, perm and MITH (I think thats Joe's Rotoguru nom de...) - because I'll be back in NY for 24 hours or so on my way to Utah.

Is there anyway we are able to see the eligibility of players in the yahoo database? I made the mistake of thinking some players were listed at different positions last year.
