I am rudely grabbing the opportunity to establish and Commish a (the first?) AAA RIBC-style Yahoo! baseball league.
It will replicate the scoring categories, draft time, etc. of Guru's league, with the idea that we shall apply, at the end of the season, for the winner, and possibly 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishers (depending on how many other qualifying leagues are set up, and various other factors), to replace the players who are relegated from Guru's league. We will attempt to have 16 players, as in the main league.
There are, as it happens, just a few more than the 16 players that is our target who indicated interest in Guru's thread. As I am very familiar with some of the Gurupies on that list, and much less familiar with others, I am simply grabbing the first 15 names who seem suitable, and inviting myself as well. So no imputation is cast on the handful of people in this thread who aren't on the list of invitees I will put in post 1. I would expect that not all of the 16 people listed will accept, and so additional slots will likely be available.

One invitee has declined by e-mail, and we stand as follows:
Tree is invited, as being at the top of the list of those who posted in Guru's thread.
The list of prospective invitees includes first, the rest of the people who posted in Guru's thread and weren't among the first 16 not part of Guru's league who posted there:
Matt S Stamati Baldwin grEEr
and then the following Gurupies, all known to me, in order of receipt of their request (either on this thread or by e-mail):
Rockfish Dave R Astade Loki
I think we will have a good league, one that, I will say, should be at least comparable in skill to the main league. And I expect that one or more qualifying leagues of equal skill will be set up.

1. Roto-style league. 5x5. Categories same as the main RIBC league. They are still debating the hitting categories at this time. I will attempt to duplicate their league settings exactly.
2. As with the main RIBC league, from Guru's introductory post in this thread We'll do a slow draft at the forum. Each manager will be asked to provide a brief rationale for each pick, as was done for basketball. I will hunt around for a link to the basketball draft to provide an example. The main league is planning to start around March 1. I would like for us to start as soon after theirs as possible (minutes? hours?), so that the two run concurrently.

However, I decided that the best way to fill this league would be to just take the names of those who indicated interest in Guru's thread, and the rest according to the time they expressed interest. You're on the waiting list, but I don't think we'll make it that far. It's defintely no reflection on your ability.

I thought of that, azd, but 1)I want to replicate the RIBC as closely as possible, as Guru encouraged qualifying leagues to do in this thread; 2) generally I think that 16 teams is the desired max for a 'normal'-style league; our 20-man league is an interesting oddity; 3) I feel it likely that someone else will start a qualifying league of comparable quality, and will have no problem finding 16 high-quality managers to fill it.

rockfish,
In regards to post #44, yes I'd be interested. In years past I've done plenty of random Yahoo Leagues, but I think I've turned the corner. Based on how poor the league activity is by midseason and what I'd like to think are improving managerial skills, I really want to stick to leagues formed with Gurupies. I don't think I'll do it justice if I was commish. However, I could co-commish if possible. Let me know what the rest of you decide.

As much as possible alike. Same categories. I just changed our league settings to reflect RIBC's most recent decisions (SP, RP, 7P instead of 9P; no max games on hitters).
Same deal with picking draft slots. I could use some advice on finding a "randomizer" for draft order though.

Guru isn't starting until March 1. What if, once a draft order is established, we "unofficially" start with no clock, thus getting us at least a few picks ahead to start with.
However, if anything, it's probably better for Guru's to start first, so the opposite can't be said about their draft.
In the end, though, there have been so many drafts on these boards and on other sites, that it really doesn't make that big of a difference (other than maybe the category change).
I guess I'm saying, I see wiggs' point, but can see a counter-argument, too. It doesn't really matter to me.

I think the "other" draft is irrelevant to ours. If someone wants to copy, let them. I highly doubt though that a so called "expert" would really want to base their team on what someone else thinks. It doesn't mean anything. There are so many "mock drafts" to look at who cares. That is my opinion anyway.

1. Per my post in 59, I'm now going to go ahead and invite rockfish and Dave R. (I have both their e-mails.) I'm sorry if SitS misses out just because he's out of town, but I think we should move along.
2. I thought about the issue of "copying", but I'm not too worried about it. There will be some different picks early, and then the rosters will soon diverge enough so that "copying" shouldn't be much of an issue. I'd like to start around March 1, shortly after Guru's draft.
3. Once I get these invitations out, I'll be back to post on setting up out "picks of draft positions". As RIBC is doing it, a draft position isn't assigned directly; instead you get to pick one. It's a snake draft, so the first chooser can pick 1-32 (first pick in first round, last in second; 2-31, 3-30, etc.)

To establish the order in which we will pick our draft position, I propose to take an alphabetized list of our players' Gurupie names and assign to them a list of 16 random numbers between 1 and 999 derived from random.org, with the lowest number selecting a draft position first.
Alternate possibility: I recall that in a league I was in, someone had a way to generate the random numbers while anyone who wanted to could "watch" online. Does anyone know how to do this or want to have this done?

Right, I think we better start choosing draft positions. We are following the RIBC procedure here: people choose their draft position in the order laid out in post 68 here.
You can see how that worked in RIBC by looking at post 19 and the following posts in the RIBC thread: http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/mb/base/16242.shtml?1077759102. Keep in mind that this is a snake draft; if you draft 1st in the odd-numbered rounds, you draft 16th in the even-numbered ones.
I'll e-mail deepsnapper and let him know we're off and running.

Yay, I love getting last pick! No really, I do! It will work out well for you guys also, as I am on New Zealand time (3 hrs behind Pacific), so you won't have to wait for me to pick twice per round. :)

1. We will select, in order, our draft position according to the list in post 79. Stamati, you will select 7th, meaning you select whatever draft position you like that has not been taken by one of the 6 ahead of you.
2. The draft will begin shortly after the main RIBC draft begins. That draft is currently scheduled to open March 1. Once RIBC has indicated its plans more precisely, I will post here with more specific details.

Here's what RIBC is currently planning:
The clock will start at 7am Monday morning. If the first few people want to get started before then, that's their prerogative, but the clock will not start until Monday. Slackjawed Yokel, feel free to pick ARod whenever you wish. (Or whoever...)
We will suspend the clock from 1am-7am EST.
We'll decide later about relaxed standards during the weekend, depending on how much progress has been made.
We will have three separate threads in progress: 1. A draft thread, which will only be used to post draft picks. Please list the pick number (eg, 1.01, 1.02, ... 1.16, 2.01), the player name, the player's team, and position eligibility. I will also maintain a separate page with all draft picks in a grid format by primary position. I will also try to update the Yahoo draft summary page several times per day.
2. A discussion thread. This will be where we communicate on anything related to the draft or to the league in general. In particular, please let us know if you have time issues, and if you have made alternate arrangements for upcoming picks (queues, deputizing someone else in your stead, etc.) Outsiders may also comment or raise questions in that thread.
3. A rationale thread. I won't start this until we get to round 3. We'll try to keep this about 2 rounds in arrears.
All threads will be on the regular baseball forum. While draft threads are generally relegated to the standings forum, this draft will attract general interest, so we'll just keep it here.
Any problems with doing the same here? Should be try to keep our 3 threads on the regular baseball forum too, unless we get booted off?
Any problem with a 6-hour clock, or opening up officially on Monday at 7?

6-hour clock is fine with me, as is starting on Monday.
For our threads, perhaps we should post them in the standings forum to avoid confusion/clutter? Afterall, our leagues have similar names...

Done.
I'll post a draft thread later in the day when I get a chance and open things up, so that anyone ready to go today can do so. We'll be moving over to the Standings Forum at that time.
In the meantime, anyone who really is ready to pick can do so here, and I'll list the pick in the draft thread when I open it.
I'll be asking Please list the pick number (eg, 1.01, 1.02, ... 1.16, 2.01), the player name, the player's team, and position eligibility.
As per the main RIBC draft, The draft will continue for 25 rounds. Players who are unlisted in the Yahoo system may be drafted. If an unlisted player is drafted, that team must preserve an empty roster spot until the player is made available in Yahoo. Failure to do so will result in the loss of rights to that player.

Just an idea to help keep future threads easy to find. Maybe title them: RIBC AAA Affiliate or something along those lines. Then anybody else who wants to start a second league (like Matt S posted) can start theirs as RIBC AA Affiliate (or whatever) to make threads easier to identify. I had thought from the title that RIBC Qualify #2 was a second thread for this league. Would make things much easier when we have a draft thread, a discussion thread, a draft thoughts thread etc and a second qualifying league starts up.

I've been thinking RQL (RIBC-Style-AAA Qualifying League). We don't really have a name yet. (Maybe, since we have managers from at least 4 countries, we should call ourselves the International League.)
I suspect other qualifying leagues will want to consider themselves AAA level as well.
Further name suggestions are welcome, but I'm ready to open the threads and I'll start with RQL. Shouldn't be any mixups with that name.
