Subject: OT - Strange, unusual, rare...

  Posted by: Wilmer McLean - [75249] Tue, Apr 27, 2004, 00:00

This thread won't better inform you for your roto team(s), but I thought this would be an interesting season long thread - an accounting of the strange, unusual, rare, out-of-the-ordinary baseball plays, moments, events and such for the 2004 season.

One of the reasons I am a baseball fan is because of the "something new" that seems to pop up every now and then. I believe this differentiates MLB from the other sports in a positive way.

Examples of the strange, unusual, rare, out-of-the-ordinary baseball plays, moments, events and such from a few seasons ago that I remember are:

The New York Yankees in Detroit had three sacrfice flies in one inning. I was watching and George Will was in the TV booth for the inning.

When I put a similiar thread a few seasons ago, someone posted that there were three Benjis in a lineup. Yes, that's strange, unusual, rare and such.

I'm looking for a community accounting for such plays, events and moments that will be a season long thread good for reading and saying to oneself, "interesting, never heard of that, three SF? How is that possible?"

There are a few moments from the 2004 season that I want to start you off with:

Larry Ellison, with a blue kayak, retrieved Barry Bond's 660 homer in McCovey Cove. He gave the ball to Bonds and in return got tickets to the next game. Ellison gave the tickets away and boarded his blue kayak for the next game and retrieved Bond's 661 ball. What are the odds?

Pitt P Kris Benson tied a major league record with four sacrifice bunts on April 18. It has only been done six times and only twice since 1920.

And, I believe when Clemens matched up against Bonds it was the first time a 600+ homer batter faced a 300+ pitcher.

Well, I hope others will contribute with other strange, unusual, rare, out-of-the-ordinary plays, events, moments and such for a long 2004 season thread. Thank you.

This is a fantastic idea for a thread IMO.

It seems to me that I heard another one in the last couple of days involving Bonds along the lines of the 600+/300+ match up. I can't for the life of me remember it right now though. Perhpas someone else will chime in and point me in the right direction.

04-06-2004 David Aardsma of the San Francisco Giants played in his first ever major league ballgame and as he stepped onto the field, he was booed loudly. Why? Aardsma alphabetically now replaces Hank Aaron at the top of the baseball biographical player list.

04-06-2004 Livan Hernandez of the Expos & Josh Beckett of the Marlins are the first two former World Series Most Valuable Player recipients to start against a fellow winner during an Opening Day game. Ironically, both won the award while pitching with the Florida Marlins who have appeared in exactly two Fall Classics (1997 & 2003).

04-07-2004 Atlanta Braves first-baseman Adam LaRoche became the first National League player to have two hits during one inning in his Major League debut.

04-14-2004 Kevin Brown of the New York Yankees won his 200th career game, one day after Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees won his 200th career game. The Yankees are now the first team to achieve this pitching plateau in the same year and their duo did it in consecutive games

04-06-2004 Kazuo Matsui of the New York Mets hit a homer on his first ever MLB pitch. There are only twenty instances in the history of Major League baseball and ten are in the American League, ten are in the National League and six of them are by pitchers!

The five above are from the Baseball Almanac site.

04-19-2004 When the breakthrough finally came, it was the most unexpected of results. Justin Duchscherer was called for a balk in the bottom of the 14th inning, enabling Quinton McCracken to score and give the Mariners a 2-1 victory.

The walk-off balk was "the first time I'd ever seen that," Mariners' manager Bob Melvin said.

About the three sacrifice flies in an inning I found this:

"The most sacrifice flies ever hit during an inning by a team is three: Chicago White Sox (vs Cleveland) in the fifth inning on July 1, 1962, New York Yankees (vs Detroit) in the fourth inning on June 29, 2000 and the New York Yankees (vs Anaheim) in the third inning on August 19, 2000."

"The Yankees set the most impossible record of the year twice. They hit three sacrifice flies in an inning in two different games. Detroit's Bobby Higginson made the first one possible by dropping a fly ball June 29. Anaheim's Ron Gant guided them through the second one by dropping one fly ball on Aug. 19, then catching another one but forgetting the outs, to let Jorge Posada score from second."

I think that Aardsma played in Houston, and as far as I can recall, I don't remeber hearing the boo from the crowd though I remember the announcers talking about his name. I assume that many people were watching the NCAA Final, but it was a 20+ points game so I switched to ESPN in order to watch Bonds... but who REALLY cares?

09-29-2002 - Ismael Valdez (SEA) goes 8 innings in the loss to the Anaheim Angels. Valdez was the last starter, other than Freddy Garcia, Jamie Moyer, Ryan Franklin, Gil Meche, or Joel Pineiro, to start a game for the Mariners. The streak is now at 181 games for SEA not using a starter outside of their 5-man rotation.

4/27/2004 In the top of the 4th, Barry Bonds was intentionally walked for the 500th time in his career. Second place all time is 295 (Aaron). Joe Morgan on ESPN said, that most players get about 500 plate appearances in a season (I think it's more), but that means he has been intentionally walked for the equivelent of one season.

We all recall that several years ago, Bonds was once intentionally walked with the bases loaded (vs Diamonbacks). It was the 9th inning, there were two out, and the Giants were down 3 runs. After Bonds intentional walk RBI, the next batter hit a hard line out to RF to end the game, making Buck Showalter's move look right.

My favorite all time trivial rare amazing baseball feat.

On May 13, 1952, Bristol (VA) Twins pitcher Ron Necciai, at age 19, accomplished a feat that may never be equaled. He not only threw a no-hitter, but he also struck out 27 batters in an Appalachian League (Class D) contest against the Welch (WV) Miners. Four Miners reached base (walk, error, HBP, dropped third strike) and one batter grounded out to the second baseman in the second inning, in the 7-0 victory. The other two infielders and the three outfielders never had to make a play.

Necciai's stuck out 24 in his next start. His minor league stats that season 4-0 42IP 109K 10H 0.42 ERA. He did play in the majors that season with the Pirates where he had a 1-6 record 7.08 ERA. Then a after year of military service, he never returned to the majors because of sore arm problems.

4/28/04 - Steve Finley hit 3 home runs in a single game. Despite his 3 HR performance, his team still loses 4-3.

Which is more amazing: That you can have a single player belt 3 HR and still lose 4-3, or that Steve Finley was that player?

With the idea of losing 4-3 despite hitting 3 HR's, what's the likelihood of a player hitting 3 SOLO HR's in a game, no matter what the final score is?

Here one from Sports Weekly:

"Coincidence, we hope - Barry Bonds hit career homer No. 666 off David Wells, whose father figures during his adolescence were hell's Angels."

And more about the Balkoff - "According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was just the sixth game-ending balk in the past 24 seasons, and the first since John Rocker's on May 8, 2000"

One from my fuzzy memory (and maybe other Met fans can help me with this one) -- I do believe a certain "SF Left Fielder" who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 20th Century was "fooled" (caught stealing) twice in one game by the pitcher's fake-to-third-check-first move.

04/29/2004 - Despite winning the game 12-3, every Anaheim Angel with an official AB had at least one strikeout and left at least one man on base.

04/29/2004 - All Defense, No Offense. The Montreal Expos have given up just 85 total runs in 23 games (3.69/game) this year, good enough for 4th best in MLB. However, they have only scored 41 total runs (1.78/game), bad enough for last place in MLB by 29 runs! Not only have they lost 4.13 runs/game on the 1st place Detroit, they've also lost 1.26 runs/game on 29th place, Tampa Bay!

From Jayson Stark's Useless info (every now and again he's got somewhat interesting useless info). The last sentence really drives home the 'strange and unusual' aspect:

Here's proof that Bonds can literally do the impossible: He just set an NL record by hitting eight home runs during a streak of homers in seven consecutive games. But what was really tough was that he appeared in eight games during that streak of seven consecutive games.

OK, so it's a technicality. (He was intentionally walked in the eighth game, so it counted as a game appeared in but not as a game played for homer-streak purposes.) But it's still supremely Barry-esque that he averaged more than one game per game.

Unusual ending in last nights Cards/Phillies game.

Bases loaded, 2 outs, Burrell strikes out swinging, but the ball goes off Matheny's glove and goes all the way to the wall, but takes a big bounce, and Matheny throws out Burrell running to first to end the inning and preserve the win (the runner from 3rd had already crossed the plate).

I think this certainly falls under "strange" or "unusual."

As I was listening to Roger Clemens's press conference, I realized that the top 2 pitchers in career strikeouts both pitched for the Houston Astros at some point in their career. Then they showed the current top 5 and it included Randy Johnson, who was traded to Houston for a playoff run in 1998. If Johnson can throw 215 more strikeouts, the top 3 players on the Career Strikeouts list will have played for the Houston Astros at some point in their career.

05/05/2004 - In the 6th inning, David Wells hit Marcus Giles with a pitch. Normally, this would not be a strange or unusual play, but...

To start the Braves 6th, Rafael Furcal reached first on a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error. He was then sacrificed to third. With Furcal at third, Wells hit his cap during his windup to pitch to Giles. As his arms were coming back down to throw the pitch, Wells' cap fell in front of his face, completely blocking his view of home plate (or anything for that matter). Wells still threw the pitch! and subsequently hit Giles. Why did he throw the pitch? Had he not, he would have balked and that would have brought Furcal home to score. Up just 1-0 at that point, Wells saved a game-tying run by throwing the ball with his view completely obstructed. To be able to know that and understand what needed to be done while this was all happening is insane. That he hit Giles was a minor consequence.

Reminiscent of Burnett's 9-walk no-hitter. Amazing that a pitcher can throw a no-hitter and still end up with a 1.00 WHIP. Another interesting fact of that no-hitter (from the linked page) is that Burnett threw 129 pitches and only 65 strikes.

FWIW, it is the most runs ever scored by 2 teams combined in the 5th inning. The old record was 14. That record stood for 84 years.

A couple other things about that game...

Rondell White, who went 0-for-6, was the only starter for either team to not score a run. Lance Nix and Brad Fullmer, both pinch hit and were the only other 2 hitters to not score a run in the game.

I don't know where you would find the information, but 31 runs with just 3 HR's would seem to be an unusual ratio.

Lastly, Danny Patterson, Al Levine, Ugueth Urbina, Doug Brocail, and Ron Mahay all combined to pitch 1.2 innings of "relief" and gave up 10 hits, 9 BB, and 14 ER's for a 75.60 ERA and a 11.40 WHIP. Um, WHOA!!!

They have finished last in the AL East in each of their previous six seasons, and entered Saturday night's game tied for the worst start in franchise history at 9-19. Their overall record going into Saturday night's game was 390-608, and 1B coach Billy Hatcher is the only one who has been in uniform for every one."

"By virtue of Saturday night's 1-0 loss at Anaheim, the Devil Rays assured themselves of going at least 29 games from the start of the season without consecutive victories. Since 1900, the longest drought from the start of a season without back-to-back wins is 43, by the 1932 Boston Red Sox."

05/10/2004 - Both starting pitchers out of a job?

After last night's poor performances, it looks like both starting pitchers in the CLE @ BOS game, Jeff D'Amico and Byung-Hyun Kim, will be removed from their respective starting rotations. (Sportsline story)

I wonder what the odds are that BOTH starting pitchers in a game would lose their spot in the rotation as a result of the same game. Strange, for sure.

Re Post 60

Andy Hawkins lost a no hitter 4-0 in 1990 or 1991. I believe a bases loaded 3 run error and a sac fly got all 4 runs across. Hawkins went on to pitch the 8 inning no hitter and the yankees lost 4-0.

They might have taken it off the books because it was only an 8 inning no hitter and that was the year of all the no hitters so i wonder if it is still considered a no hitter.

Jeter has now gone 4957+ and still counting ABs without a GS. Fear not, Eric Young holds the active record at 5536 and still counting (but only 73 career HRs).

Most 40 HRs season with no GS

I was suprised that 94 times this has occured including Sammy with 63 in 1999.

I also found that Sammy holds the record for the most HRs (246) before hitting his first GS. I guess those Cubs are never on base? Bob Horner has previously held the record at 210. Of course Bob Hoirner is one of a very few # of playess to hit 4 HRs ina single game, so perhaps he has a "cycle slam?"

05-25-04 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- "Nobody on either team could remember a game ending like this.

Second base umpire C.B. Bucknor called interference on Carlos Guillen in the ninth inning, nullifying the tying run and giving the Kansas City Royals a 4-3 victory Tuesday night over the Detroit Tigers.

Detroit trailed 4-3 with runners at the corners and one out in the ninth. Ivan Rodriguez hit a grounder to shortstop Angel Berroa, who flipped to second baseman Desi Relaford for the force.

As Guillen came crashing in, Relaford threw to first, trying for a game-saving double play. But Rodriguez beat the throw, allowing Alex Sanchez to score the tying run from third.

Or so it seemed.

Right after first base umpire Chuck Meriwether called Rodriguez safe on a close play, Bucknor signaled interference on Guillen and an automatic double play, ending the game."

05/18/2004 - On the same date Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell and Jim Thome of the Phillies hit back-to-back-to-back home runs, "Colorado's jeromy Burnitz and Matt Holliday hit back-to-back homers twice in an 8-3 win against the Reds. The Yankees currently have 33 wins and 22 come-from-behind wins. Kind of odd given their payroll.

It was a family affair in Anaheim... "Kelvim Escobar pitched to his cousin, Alex Escobar, for the first time in the majors. Alex was 0-for-3 against him... Bengie and Jose Molina, the only brother catching combination in the majors, got to see brother Yadier's big league debut with St. Louis Cardinals on the video board while doing their pregame stretching. Yadier had two hits and scored a run."

Ty Wigginton's triple in the second inning gave him an extra base hit for an eighth straight game, a Mets record. Steve Henderson (1977) and Tommie Agee (1969) each had streaks of seven straight. Wigginton's 8-game extra base hit streak has also given him the longest hitting streak for his career.

These are from Sports Weekly.

06-03-04 "At 45, Julio Franco became the oldest major leaguer to hit a grand slam, leading the Braves to an 8-4 victory at Philadelphis."

06-02-04 "Pittsburgh Jason Kendall scored from second base on a sacrifice fly." (wow, how?)

And, from their "Superlatives for the first third of 2004" piece...

"Strangest Relief Appearance - David Weathers, Mets - Weathers was warming up in the pen when he was summoned into the game. No big deal. Yet, it was in the middle of an at-bat, with Mike Stanton on the mound. Odd, but it's been done before.
But with two strikes on hitter Mike Lowell?
Weathers, brought in because Lowell was hitting .484 against lefties, inherited a 2-2 count. 'I Was totally off kilter. I guess you can't assume anything as a reliever.'
Weathers promptly gave up a game-tying double, and the Mets lost to the Marlins."

i don't think it's been mentioned in this thread, but doesn't Toby Harrah posess what is quite possibly the most unique and nearly difficult to reproduce record in baseball - that being his "do nothing" record?

June 25, 1976, saw Harrah play an entire Doubleheader at shortstop, and not handle a single chance in the field.

interesting, in September of 1977, just over a year later, Harrah played an entire 17-inning game at 3B without recording an assist.

According to Earnie Harwells book "Diamond Gems", Early 1970's New York Yankee First baseman, Ron Blomberg, could consume 28 hamburgers at one sitting.

mmmmmm White Castle. We only have Krystals down south :(

Not quite the same. Even 28 White Castle burgers is quite an accomplishment.

if you're consuming 28 White Castle burgers in one sitting, you're doing that one sitting on the can.

Ironically enough, Ron Blomberg was the first designated hitter to appear in a regular-season game. April 6, 1973.

Ron admits that his 28 hamburger sitting was during a contest held in Atlanta. So if J says no white castles in ATL then we have confirmed that Ron did infact NOT eat 28 white castle hamburgers.

Krystal's "hamburgers" (sliders?) are almost identically small and intestine damaging as White Castle's "product."

A couple I saw in the recent issue of SI...

06/03/2004 - After calling every game on radio in franchise history, Toronto Blue Jays announcer Tom Cheek's streak ended at 27-1/2 seasons Thursday because of his father's death. Cheek had called 4,306 consecutive regular-season games, plus 41 more in the post-season, since the Blue Jays began playing in 1977. Full story.

06/05/2004 - Tim Hudson's win over TOR broke a record-tying 7-game streak of no-decisions for Oakland's starters. Of interest is the fact that during that stretch, Oakland's starters posted a 1.84 ERA.

Can't believe this thread fell so far. 85 million gets butted more than this... sad.

7/3/04
Tonight´s game was the longest game in the history of the Baltimore Orioles franchise. The previous longest game was 5 hours, 49 minutes against the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998.

7/3/04
Pirates played in their 5th DH of the season on Friday. This was the last time a team played 5 DH's in a season since the 1990 Cubs.

In the 7th inning of HOU's game @CHC on 06/29/2004, Carlos Beltran hit a HR off of Francis Beltran. They are the only two Beltran's in MLB currently on a 40-man roster.

2 things:

The no-hitter that Adam Eaton took into the eigth inning last night was the third time a Padre pitcher took a no-hitter into the eigth inning ON JULY 3rd!

Re 135:
If memory serves me correctly, didn't Jeremy Gonzalez of Tampa Bay hit Juan Gonzalez with a pitch a year or two ago?

07-05-04 Richard Hidalgo, who only had four home runs for Houston before being trade, became the first Met to hit a home run in five consecutive games. (The Mets fell one home run short of becoming the first NL team with at least 3 home runs in five consecutive games)

07-03-04 An uninjured Contreras was replaced by Paul Quantrill during Shane Spencer's at-bat with no outs in the sixth inning with a 2-1 count.

Anyone notice that on Saturday Pit's 2B (J. Castillo) went 1-4 with no walks yet managed to score 4 runs?!?!

Here's the box score. I assume it was either errors or fielder's choice, but that's some bad luck!

Cardinals Fan Gets Hit Twice By Foul Ball In One Game

Woman OK After Baseball Hits Her In Head, Neck On Sunday

POSTED: 1:25 pm EDT July 7, 2004
UPDATED: 1:34 pm EDT July 7, 2004

ST. LOUIS -- The next time Sara Denoyer attends a St. Louis Cardinals game, she might want to sit way, way out in the bleachers.

Denoyer and her boyfriend sat down the first-base line at Busch Stadium, watching a game the Cards eventually won against the Seattle Mariners 2-1 on Sunday.

Early in the game, a foul ball struck Denoyer in the neck. Then in the ninth inning, Seattle's Scott Spiezio hit a foul that also struck Denoyer -- this time in the head.

Denoyer was admitted to a hospital for one night for the blow to the head. She chalked it up to bad luck and said she still loves the Cardinals.

----------------------------------------------

But, is this the first time a fan is hit twice by two foul balls?...

----------------------------------------------

August 17, 1957 After breaking her nose with a foul ball, Richie Ashburn hits Alice Roth again as she is being put onto a stretcher. The injured woman is the wife of the Philadelphia Bulletin's sports editor, Earl Roth.
