Subject: Angels Change name to LA

The Anaheim Angels have changed their name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The city of Anaheim has said this breaks their lease and has filed a restraining order.

This seems to be just starting. I think it is a horrible move by the team.

The name game: Angels add Los Angeles to name

Associated Press
Published on: 01/03/05

Anaheim, Calif. -- The Angels are renaming themselves yet again, adding Los Angeles in a move likely to provoke a fight with the Anaheim City Council.

The team said Monday it will be known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Angels said the move will "strengthen the Angels' long-term economic health by enhancing the marketability through this metropolitan area and beyond."

Anaheim officials claim the change breaks the terms of the team's 33-year lease with the city.

The franchise, owned by singing cowboy Gene Autry, began as the Los Angeles Angels in 1961, then became the California Angels when it moved to Anaheim in 1966. In 1997, when the team was controlled by The Walt Disney Co., the franchise was renamed the Anaheim Angels.

Arte Moreno bought the team in 2003, one year after it won the World Series, and wanted the name change. The Angels drew 3,375,677 last season, the third-highest total in baseball behind the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

I think the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim ought to sue too for copying.

What a joke.

If I'm NOT in Orange County and live in L.A., does it make me wanna see the Angels more? Do I want more Angels gear because they are the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? In the stats leaders we see, instead of ANA are we gonna see:

HR Leaders:
Guerrero, LAAoA 40
Ramirez, BOS 39

?!??

I really couldn't care less what they're called. As long as they keep making the playoffs, I'm happy.

Re 4: "The team said it will continue to use the 'A' brand to identify itself."

I guess they would still use AA then according to this, but not sure though.

Maybe next year they'll try to capture that "beyond" market and change their name to the:

Los Angeles Angels of the City of Anaheim in the State of California in the United States of America as part of North America and Planet Earth.

Why don't they try to capitalize on the younger crowd and go for the OC Angels?

I read where most mediat outlets will be referring them as LA Angels. ESPN will run their crawl with the initials LAA and the LA Times will refer to them as simply the Angels. Meanwhile, the city of Anaheim got another big time attorney to continue to fight this.

The city of anaheim won the first step in court a couple days ago as judges refused to dismiss any part of the lawsuit and won key motions.

In a related note, I thought for the past two days that the Dodgers had signed Chone Figgins to a one year deal, only to find out today (after re-reading the paper) that according to USA Today it was Los Angeles Angels!!! (&%^$^^&%&*$!%@&@%

Yeah, some sites have gone to LAA for the Angels' nickname instead of ANA.

These preseason box scores are killing me more. They just have Los Angeles and whoever they are playing in the box and to make things worse, both the Angels and Dodgers both have Izturis leading off for their respective team. In the linescores I'm seeing LAA and LAD but not in the box. Very confusing.

If my 2 cents is interesting to anyone else: this behavior on the part of the owner is retarded. If I am a resident of LA, I like the Dodgers. I'm not going to suddenly start liking the Angels because they change their name any more than I would like the Yankees if they changed their name to the LA & NY Yankees. The name is of no consequence to me, as a fan. The performance of the team and loyalty are the 2 most important factors.

MLB should make a rule to prevent the individual owners from changing the names of their teams without a consensus or majority vote. The integrity of the sport and more importantly to them, it's image is at stake.

I heard the Packers were gonna change their name to "The Milwaukee Wisconsin Packers of Green Bay"

Just fire the goof executive who thought this up and let's get on with our lives.

I'm pretty sure the owner, Arte Moreno, is the brains behind this move. If he didn't come up with it, he sure has bought into it. That's the problem though, and that's why he won't desist. He thinks it's a good idea. I can't think of a more appropriate word to describe it than "stupid."

I just saw an MLB commercial promoting Opening Day and the commercial consisted of this family talking about how the Angels are their favorite team. It was "Angels" this and "Angels" that and on and on and on. Throughout the commercial, the family never said Anaheim. They also never said Los Angeles. They always said, "The Angels."

They took "Anaheim" off the web site in early January.
