Subject: Baseball Sucks!! Who Agrees?

  Posted by: MadAndRabidDOG - [56012617] Tue, Mar 15, 2005, 10:17

It's boring, the games are too long, the season is too long. The players are greedy a-holes.

It's just a bad situation all around. Who in their right mind wants to spend their summer watching this sport?

I'd rather watch baseball than any other sport except:

1. NFL Football
2. UF Gators football games
3. USA World Cup soccer matches

And since it will be September before I can watch any of those 3, I'll be tuned in to baseball for the next 5.5 months.

I disagree on most of your points.

The players aren't greedy a-holes. Well, some of them are, but no more so than in any other profession. In fact, less so.

The owners are indeed greedy a-holes. That's why they're owners. In all sports. Well, except Mark Cuban. He's an owner for the right reasons.

Last time I checked, I was in my right mind. At least, that's what my shrink said. And I sure do want to spend my summer watching this sport.

There may be things about baseball I don't like - the Wild Card, Dusty Baker, the Braves, Tim McCarver - but I'll live with those. They are much less annoying than posts like yours.

Tim McCarver, amen. Dislike that guy strongly.

That's actually a good hijack for this thread, bh: which owners (in any sport) are owners less because of greed and more because it's fun?

Cuban's one. Maybe Pat Croce. Daniel Snyder spends alot of money, and he wants all of the best players, but I think he is probably pretty greedy, too (I mean, where did he get all of that money?). But he's likely not the greediest of the NFL owners.

Honestly, I'd put George into the Cuban category.

Before you yell, think about it: It has been documented that he has regularly spent his own money to bring in players. Over the past couple of years he not only spends the profit off his team's cable deal but he has occasionally dipped into his own personal fortune.

Any owner who does that in my book is great. You may hate the Yanks because they do spend that much but he is the kind of owner you want. He is willing to risk his own cash to get a championship. Many owners certainly have no interest in doing that.

Pat Croce. I'm really on the fence about him. Sometimes I love him. Sometimes I hate him. Sometimes I wish he owned the Phillies.

What about Steinbrenner? He obviously cares about more than money. But maybe that's because he's got it both ways.

And I have a question for MadDOG - why is MLB so far down on your list? Don't you think that might sway the voting? Also, why is DOG all caps? Does it stand for something?

Arte Moreno has been spending alot on players, too. Although, he is trying to crowd in on LA's territorial rights. That's an obvious moneygrab there.

NFL coaches that spend alot of money on coaching staff: Pat Bowlen, Jerry Jones, Malcom Glazer. That is a good indicator to me that they aren't as greedy as, say, Red "I spend $750K on my head coach" McCombs.

That would be like me going to a soccer forum and saying "soccer sucks. you must all be mad. I've seen more scoring at a Star Trek convention."

My least favorite has got to be Carl Pohlad.

I'd say Mark Cuban is the best owner. He obviously loves the sport and his team. Although I doubt that he's losing any money on his investment.

Probably some of the best owners are the guys who are willing to go into debt to keep their teams going.

Bud Selig may fall into that category.

Daniel Snyder has got to be one of the most incompetent owners. The guy doesnt' have a clue.

Pohlad is crusty and greedy. Not a good owner. I dislike the Lerners of Cleveland, Peter Angelos, Donald Sterling, and the Kauffmans of KC. Several of them are billionaires and they should have much better teams.

Is Pohlad the guy who owns the Twins? I think he could have moved that team several times if I'm not mistaken. And he didn't. Give him credit for that.

And somebody is doing a pretty good job of keeping the Twins competitive in a small market.

I know you're a youngin, but I think it was only two years ago that Pohlad tried to contract his team. Give him credit for that.

And you're way off base about Bud Selig - the Brewers are one of the most profitable franchises in baseball. And so are the Twins, for that matter.

Wasn't it Bud Selig and MLB that tried to contract the Twins?

You sure Pohlad had anything to do with that? Selig wanted the State of Minnesota to build a new stadium just like Wisconsin did with Miller Park.

As much as I hate him and his tactics, Jeffrey Loria in Florida seems to care about his team. He sure didn't have to go after Delgado, or Pudge in 2003, or re-sign Lowell, etc. They've been losing alot of money doing those things. That said, his handling of my Spos when he owned them in Montreal was atrocious, his 'threat' to move the team to Vegas (and his subsequent visit with the Vegas mayor) to get Miami/Florida to cough up the money for a new stadium, and the way he pillaged everything of value from the Mtl franchise when he left for Florida are signs of his 'do what it takes, to hell with the ethics' ways.

So is he good or bad? Good I suppose for baseball fans in southern Florida, unless you despise tax dollars being used on baseball stadiums. Bad for everyone else...

R9 - I disagree a bit. If he hadn't signed Delgado or Pudge, the fans would have started to get mad, and not come to the games, costing Loria money. Don't believe me? Well, it happened once before, if you recall. You really can't talk about two or three free agent signings and judge the owner.

I think in it's purest form baseball is the perfect game. It's the game I enjoyed thruought my childhood and most of my adult life. I've played & coached and my active days in the sport are some of my better memories in life.

I'm not sure what it is but over the past 4-5 years I've drifted from the professional game. I've lost interest in fantasy baseball and seldom watch a MLB game except during the Playoffs and World Series. I did go to one game last season but that was mostly because I wanted to take my grandson and nephew....we had a great day.

I'm not going to bash today's players, but for me the game just no longer has the same feel it did years ago. I think it has to do with free agency and not knowing who's going to be on your home team from year to year. Money, steroids, greedy players/owners, salary caps, free agency, high prices, over exposure, player unions, stikes and so on. Plus the fact that I would rather play golf, fish and spend time on my boat all have contributed to my recent lack of interest.

I guess I'm just a casual fan and no longer a fanatic?

I grew up playing baseball..as a kid I played as much as I could..now we are talking about a time when you had black and white TV's..and only 3 channels..worse then that you actually had to get up off your ass to change the channel..So my youth was spent outside playing baseball..I loved playing the game and following the Box Scores..as a fan I don't mind the game being slow..It's relaxing to attend a game, chat with whom ever your with and munch down on hot dogs with mustard..the pop of the catcher's mitt, the crack of the bat..the warm summer nights..I love the game itself..however I'm not happy with what has been going on..unfortuantly I no longer live in an area that has a major league team.(only minor leagues now..Durham Bulls and the Mudcats).I grew up watching the Detroit Tigers..even saw Ted Williams in his last appearance at Tiger Stadium..Lots of great memories and I was around when it really was a game..when players played for the love of the game..I can even remember when Al Kaline turned down a contract for $100,000 a jump from if I recall $75,000 because he felt the previous year was not up to his standards...the players change, the stadiums change, but the pitching mound and bases are still the same..it has now become a business for most..I miss the players that played because they loved the game..most would have played for nothing..always have and always will love the game

Hell, I'm only 21, and I remember going to Tigers games with my dad, he'd come home from work at 6:30 for the 7:10 first pitch, my mom would make us hot dogs to eat in the car ride there, we'd Listen to pregame on WJR (Earnie Harwell's voice is magic, I'm a proud owner of a Harwell Bobble Head Doll and I did have the pleasure on getting his autograph at the 1st annual tigerfest.) Like OMG said above, nothing like a warm summer night at the ball park. We'd Park on Plum Street (dead end side street, didnt have to pay, 2 min walk from the stadium) and head to the box office to get our bleacher seats that cost 3-4 dollar. We'd head to the bleachers, picking up a program on our way, and line our selves up right with homeplate and i swear we could call strikes and balls better then the ump. I remember My dad would fill in the score card using symbols that i could understand. (HR, 1B, 2B, PO, GO, FC) as opposed to the ones that they show on the card. (I probably have a stack of old programs lying around my house some where) I was able to go the 2nd to last game at Tiger Stadium and was truly sad to see games there come to a close. A lot of great memories at Tiger Stadium.

I have this memory of my father and I walking up to the ticket box to get some bleacher seats and the man infront of us, who as much as I hate to say it, appeared homeless, slid across a few stacks of dimes just to get into the stadium. Talk about, just wanting to go see a game.

That was a lot of rambling, but im happy to share a few memories to a few other tigers fans.

Baseball couldn't be developed today.
It doesn't have a clock and the only places for commercials are between innings and during pitching changes. Contrast that with the NBA and NFL, where a single play can be sandwiched by 5 minutes of commercials.
The only real problem I see with the game is its lack of a salary cap. I'm a Cubs fan, but it pains and bores me to see the same teams dominate play every year. At the start of each season, you can pretty well pick the playoff teams. Every once in a while, teams like the As or Marlins will remind us that some front offices are better than others, but basically the top revenue teams rule.

Don

You don't find the fact that most people fall asleep or lose interest after 1 or 2 innings a problem with the game?

And your right, not having a salary cap makes this horrendous game even worse. About 5 teams have a shot every year.

People in Milwaukee and alot of other cities basically go to the games to drink $5 beers and sit in the new stadium or sit in the sun. They know the team doesn't have a prayer every single year.

BTW, my hats off to the people in Milwaukee. (Where I live) For this team to draw 2,000,000 people every year when they are absolutely the worst team in the majors just about every year is almost beyond comprehension. Were talking about a city and metro area that only has about 2 million people. I think there's 5 million people in the whole state of Wisconsin.

Milwaukee is a Major League baseball town I guess. Too bad we have minor league team every year.

For attendence per population I bet Milwaukee is right up there.

I want to ask Motley Crue and Blue Hen: What is it about Tim McCarver that you dislike so much?
I've always enjoyed listening to McCarver. He knows the game as well as anyone in my opinion and has always had a good perspective on almost any game situation. He even makes me laugh every now and then.

As for the game itself, in it's purest form Baseball's the greatest game that's ever been created. People from all walks of life play it and watch it. Watching the Bosox beat the dreaded Yankees and finally winning a World Series and watching Ichiro break Sisler's hits record are reasons why I love Baseball. It's got a rich history that represents all that's good and all that's bad about the American system. You'll know what I'm talking about if you've ever watched the incredible Baseball documentary by Ken Burns.

Blue Hen... I never really noticed Tim McCarver's bias you speak of. I'll try and detect some when I listen to him do some games throughout this year.
Don't like the wild card neither huh? I'd guess it's either because it lengthens an already long season or it's because maybe you miss those great pennant races in September under the old format. If it's the latter, I can see where you're coming from. Those September pennant races represented some of the best baseball of the season, sometimes even surpassing even the LCS and World Series. Good examples are the '78 AL East race between the Yanks and Bosox, and the '87 AL East race between the Tigers and Blue Jays. The '87 race was the best one I ever saw, the one which Tigers and Jays slugged it out in seven head to head games in the final ten days of the season and all seven games were each decided by a single run. The year that Bill Madlock upended Tony Fernandez at 2nd base and Fernandez shattered his elbow on the wood plank surrounding the dirt at 2nd at old Exhibition Stadium.
After the Bosox made history last year as a wild card team, do you still feel the same way about it? Under the old format, none of it would have happened.

Yes, I hate the Wild Card and will continue to crap on it. It's got very little to do with lengthening the season. I love the long season - since I miss baseball in the winter. I actually like the DH, and more than that, I like it only being in one league. I don't care for Interleague Play, but it's not nearly as bad as the Wild Card.

And listen to Tim McCarver do a Yankee game and wait for him to say something bad about Derek Jeter.

MadAndRabidDOG: There are about 25 anti-baseball posts on this stupid thread and all of them are by you. You've failed to win any converts although I've got to tip my baseball cap to you for trying like hell to get others to hate baseball like you do. You had to have known from the beginning that when you make a post like this in a BASEBALL FORUM that you weren't gonna find anyone that agreed with you.
So what was the real motivation for your topic then? Was it that you like indulging in your first amendment rights? If that's the case, then go make a post like this in some forum that is dedicated to talking about daytime soap operas or something. I'm sure you'd be right at home there. Leave forums like this to baseball fans.
The fact that you keep coming back here though gets me to wonder if you're not more of a baseball fan than you let on. You make more posts about baseball than I do and I've been into the game for a long time.

Interesting that not even one person has stood up to defend MadAndRabidDog. Even YankeesRule had more support.

Dumbass, that's a term of endearment. If people said how they really felt about you, they would be banned.

I pray that whatever is missing in your life can be found because you seem bitter about something.

I'm done with my troll food.

My life is missing something because I can't stand baseball?

Interesting viewpoint. BTW, you've never even met me. This is a message forum.

It's pretty funny that people actually think they know somebody and have a relationship with them when they have never laid their eyes on that person.

You see the same thing in chatrooms. People lose track of reality.

THE INTERNET IS NOT REAL PEOPLE. This message forum is just electrons floating in cyberspace..

And since I don't care, I wonder how much I will mind if moderators start editing my posts to make me look like an idiot. Not that they have to try very hard.

For the first time in all the years you have been here you say something that makes sense.

I have to admit MARD that this is my favorite of the 4 monikers you have used. I can't wait for Guru to ban you so I can see what the 5th one is like.

It was actually "Balls" who came up with this name while he was viciously attacking me in one of his posts.

I wonder how many posts of mine have to change before I go away.

You guys are doing a great job of "not feeding the trolls". I wonder how many times each one of you has given that advice.

The gurupie philosophy: Do as I say, not as I do.

I continue to use the Rotoguru tools daily ... but find myself coming to the forum with far less frequency. It's all because of this loser MadandRabidDog, and his senseless and useles spamming over every forum.

Please Guru - just get rid of him and let me look forward to the Boards again. Thanks!

Baseball rules.

Well, Perm Dude used that catch phrase back in November. I guess 6 months is old school. Baseball might not suck but it is boring. Watching Nomar bat is irritating and torture.
