Sorry. Matt took my pick and I had to re-evaluate. That's two rounds in a row one of 2 players I wanted after 'the turn' did not make it to me. :(
PS - I'm changing my team name to "The Big IF". IF Giambi does well. IF Preston Wilson plays 130 games. IF Kerry Wood is healthy. IF.........

I'm only playing in two leagues this year due to time constraints and in both leagues I've taken more risks than usual. My strategies, esp. in this league, is drastically different than last year. I sometimes question myself since so many of my picks were injured last year, but I started with this idea and am going to continue with it.

It had to happen soon...so much possible talent still on the board in Junior. This league won't be won w/o risks, so maybe it'll payoff. I certainly hope not, but you never know. ;)

You know, the more I read these rationales, and especially read my own after the fact, I think all of us have excellent prescriptions for rose-colored glasses! lmao I'm really stretching things sometimes with these "I hope for .850 OPS with 85 runs and 85 rbi" proclamations! Not to pick on Slack (and the point is I'm just as guilty!), but I think I realized it most when I read his Randy Winn rationale (I wanted Winn that round, btw) which stated he expected him to BOTH score and drive in 80-90 runs. If Winn drives in 80-90 I'll make a $10 donation to Guru! ;-)

It's funny you mention that Peter, because you've taken a number of guys(mainly hitters) that I've wanted. Seems we both have a similar strategy of drafting real young hitters, which works better when there's only one person drafting that way! ;)

Species, I think my rationale that this could be a bad pick was the first to say as such! I agree that many of our rationales are more hopeful than realistic. But we are eternal optimists.

Well, most of us think the players we drafted are going to do well, or else we wouldn't have taken them.
Of course, we're wrong a lot of the time too, going back and reading the rationales after the season can be pretty funny at times :)

Chris, big difference in thinking they will do well and hopeful they will do well. Many times when it gets late like this, people jsut start looking at their cheat sheets and grab one of the higher remaining names. Nothing wrong with that!

I was thinking the same thing. it would be smoother if he sent it to one or two others. I understand not wanting to send a queue within the league. you always hope some of your guys will drop a round or two so you don't to put their name out there. but I'm sure there are other gurupies around that wouldn't mind taking his queue.

Ref - I nearly selected Penny. Bluntly, I had him 2nd in my queue the previous round and thought you would take him then. It was almost a coin toss between a decent catcher and the huge upside in Penny. I guess I figured I had taken enough chances so far that I needed to get a reasonably 'safe' guy at C.
That pick could be huge if he is 100% healthy on May 1st. He's only 27, going to a good park with a great pen - huge upside there.
Toral - I'm the doofus that took Bret Boone! ;-)

Guru, I'm in one of the AA leagues and wanted to know if there is a minimum innnings pitched requirement?
I'm not planning on using this as a strategy, but it occured to me that it would be possible to draft 1 top flight pitcher have great numbers for ERA and WHIP and tank the other 3 pitching cats while stockpiling hitters.
While this would probably be against the spirit of the game it might be an interesting strategy.

These are the hitters drafted by Peter N so far:
Alex Rodriguez, 29 years old, ~9 MLB seasons Miguel Cabrera, 21 years old, ~1.5 MLB seasons Justin Morneau, 23 years old, ~1 MLB season Jason Bay, 26 years old, ~1 MLB season Orlando Cabrera, 30 years old, ~7 MLB seasons Johnny Estrada, 28 years old, ~1.5 MLB seasons Nick Swisher, 24 years old, 0 MLB seasons Jeremy Reed, 23 years old, 0 MLB seasons Clint Barmes, 26 years old, 0 MLB seasons Alex Rios, 24 years old, 1 MLB season Dallas McPherson, 24 years old, 0 MLB seasons
I knew you were drafting young man, but that's younger than anything I had imagined! 9 out of 11 players have a year and a half of big league time or less.
Of course, I bring this up because I have a number of players like that myself:
Wright(1 year) Figgins(1.5 years) Mench(2 years) Lane(~250 AB's) Atkins(rookie) Holliday(1 year) Closser(rookie) Bartlett(rookie)
Either we're having a hell of a rookie crop this year, or we're in deep trouble :)
Here's to youth!

Chris, yup, the plan of my draft going in was to go after upside. I really like alot of the young talent out there, this year especially, and decided to gamble on that rather than veterans. Here's to hoping I'm right! :-) Oh, and if I would've realized that Orlando Cabrera was 30, I wouldn't have drafted him!!! ;-)

Even if we shut down for the weekend, we'll finish next week, well ahead of schedule. The clock will be off for the weekend, and although you can still pick when your turn is due, feel free to take a breather, especially if you have conflicting priorities. If you do plan to be on hiatus, an alert here would be thoughtful, however, just so others know the situation.

For use in future rounds:
Joe Smedlyskyk, ---, ---
The rules of this game require, or rather, allow, me to pick up to 25 players.
Smedlyskyk as of right now is supposed to be on the roster of the -------s as of Opening Day. There's a good chance he'll be released first, but some other team might pick him up.
He has played well and steadily in the past. Unfortunately when he played well it was when he wasn't playing steadily, and when he played steadily he didn't play very well.
Probably he had some personal problems or migraines or something, and given another chance he might play better.
Researching him, I found that a friend of his said that he once hit three homers/struck out 12 guys in high school, and was quite a star there. Although, I'm not quite sure it was this player who being referred to; it might have been another guy with a similar name, the friend wasn't sure.
If he's on an MLB roster this year, Joe has a strong incentive to work hard and play his best, because otherwise he'll be washing cars pretty soon.

I think Pete gets his G20 strategy confused with this league at times! Of course he won this league last year so we shouldn't question him!
I won't be around for most of the weekend. Hopefully I can get two picks off today. Still may leave a Q with someone just in case it should get back to me before I get access again Sunday afternoon.

When I realized my error I feared Ref might take him and tried to leap frog over him. Snow would've still been there, so you two must be in cahoots against me! Sepcies - first Jack Bauer has to save the world this Sunday on local television because we get a 4 hour finale of day 3. after that you can call him. If I would call he would know in 30 seconds where I am and you never know what Jack is doing with you when he needs some information. He would then be in Austria in less than 3 hours, only to keep the TV ratings high. and of course he will have all my future draft picks that someone found in one of the CTU databases. I'd better hack me into their system or I am screwed this season. perhaps I should call Alex Krycek because he knows how to get invisible for Agent Mulder, and sometime at the end of the season I will send the cigarette smoking man and he will tell how I did it all.

Note to league: I misread a queue from Ref and posted an incorrect pick for him at 20.05. Eight picks followed before the error was caught and corrected.
It seems highly unlikely that any of the intervening picks would have selected the player that was originally listed at 20.05. However, if you are keeping track of picks on your own, you may need to update your list.

FWIW, Guru, Horacio was the guy I had planned to grab. I knew reaching for Phillips may cost me. Oh well, lots of other players available. At this point in the draft I start figuring, heck, I have to have people to drop to pick up the surprises anyhow! ;)

Horacio moved to the top of my list as well. I need to stop making lists 6 picks in front of me...too annoying when they're gone.
.....either that or I'll put injured or retired players at the top -- kind of a reverse-psychology thing.

Nice pick Species. It was between Nady and Robertson for me. I had to decide which had a better chance to get back to me. Guess I may have been wrong. Would any of the rest of you snagged Nady before it got to me again?

Thanks Ref. I would've been beside myself if you had taken him....that would've made like three odd-numbered picks in a row. While Nady's recent addition of possible 3b time increases his value, no I would not have considered him on this particular turn.

Was thrilled to nab both Robertson and Padilla this late. Robertson's K's will be nice and I think his ERA and WHIP from last year were way overblown given that he totally ran out of gas down the stretch. Plus the Tigers aren't pushovers anymore.....Padilla seems to be on the right track and has historically given seasons in the 3.70 ERA and 1.25 WHIP range. I love my set of starters now.

I updated the draft results through round 23 at the Yahoo site: draft results
Please check your roster for accuracy. There are four unlisted players for whom I used placeholders:
Mark Teahen: coded as Robby Alomar Huston Street: coded as Francis Beltran Chad Fox: coded as Danny Bautista Brandon Lyon: coded as Tim Salmon
In each case, when the drafted player becomes available, you may select him by dropping his alternate. Do not use a waiver claim to do so. (I may be able to force the change using Commissioner powers if you don't want to wait until the player clears waivers.) If you drop the placeholder without picking up the drafted player, your protected claim to that player is forfeited.

Hopefully, we'll get through the final round today or tomorrow. IF so, I'll have the draft all coded into Yahoo by sometime on Sunday night, and I will release the draft and start the season on Monday. At that time, all undrafted players will be on waivers for 2 days.
Waiver priorities will be in the reverse of the opening round of the draft. Matt S will have the top waiver claim, and darkside will be #16.
Are there any other issues that should be addressed prior to activating the league?

Something to consider as a possible rule change next year:
The debate in the pre-season about the possibility of adding a DL slot to each roster (in order to compensate for a vary shallow 4 person bench) combined with a very minor draft advantage for those in the top half of the draft (they draft early in 13 of 25 rounds; late in 12), I'd like to suggest the possibility of adding a 26th round to the draft.
The benefits are that each manager's bench would be lengthened a little and the minor advantage of being in the first half of the draft would be eliminated.
Granted, having the 1st pick on the 25th round is a miniscule advantage, but one player near the top of my queue has been taken before me already. I don't get the opportunity to return the favor!
Some managers will argue that there are no more players left. I disagree. There are at least a half a dozen players that I'd like to draft for my team, given the opportunity.
This probably does not warrant discussion now, but I wanted to put it out while it was fresh on my mind for someone to remember for next year's pre-season thread.

jb, I begged for another bench spot. I even offered to take away a ci and mi or a pitcher slot, but was defeated, I think 12-4. I'd rather have another bench slot than a DL. I'd rather have a thinner FA pool and one more bench spot than the way it is. But all we can do is make the best of what we have. We're all playing on an even playing field and perhaps the four that voted for the change will benefit from the way the rules are now.
The way I see it, I can adjust my strategy to whatever the rules are. But I agree, just a few tweaks that were proposed, yet defeated, would make this league even better IMM. Just like in cards, anyone can win with a good hand, but it takes a good player to win with a bad hand dealt to you. It's just hard to deal with that bad hand (draft/injuries/etc) when there isn't a lot that can be done as far as turnover or trading.
With that said, I think this league is very good and very competitive and will be a lot of fun.

22.15 Joe Blanton, SP, OAK
I meant to take Blanton with my last pick and didn't expect him to make it back to me. I'm obviously glad that he did. Blanton is likely gonna be the 4th starter for Oakland and has nice potential to flourish this year. I liken him to this year's Zach Greinke. Definitely happy to snag Blanton this late in the draft.
23.02 Mark Teahen, 3B, KC This pick is a make-up for the Hinske pick. Teahen seems to have nailed down the starting job and should be a good filler at CI until Mcpherson gets back. The strikeout rate early on this spring is a bit of a concern, but I have to like the .407 BA. Not expecting alot here.

I can't wait any longer. I have 3 guys in my Q and I haven't figured out which way to go yet. It may or may not depend on what guys go off before me. I'll be back on in a few hrs. It still may not be my turn by then though.

I'm back and I see it's my pick (though no email this time from kaf.) I've got it narrowed down to two. Would ahve helped if someone would have taken one of them, but no such luck. That probably tells me that neither should be drafted! Gimme a couple mins please.

Here's my last 3 rationales... sorry couldn't spend more time today, still on the road remotely.
23.04 Alex Sanchez, OF, TB
Took a chance when I drafted Sanchez. He'd been released by DET and picked up by TB, but not guaranteed a starting job (RF). TB was (is) still trying to trade for an OF with some power. It also means the speedy Gathright might stay at AAA for a while.... and there my be pressure to bring him up later. At this point, it looks like Alez will break camp as the starting RF.
Everyone knows Sanchez can't stay healthy and can't take a walk, but has a good BA. He has no power. Frankly, I took a chance for a few reasons. 1) it's round #23. 2) If he can get hot early with OBP, runs, SBs, I may be able to trade him as steals are always a desired commodity. On the slight chance he hits .300, plays 150 games, he could steal 50-- that would make him a steal (yeah right)
I was targeting that extra RP I spoke of earler, but decided to gamble (SBs/trade bait) here instead.
24.13 Esteban Loaiza (P), WAS
No one is gonna tell you 2003 will ever be duplicated, but I do think the CHW to NYY thing was not his cup of tea. He was 9-4 when traded and was a disaster after that. I think the quieter atmoshpere (media) of WAS will settle him down. Happy with a 12-12 season... maybe 4.00/1.40 and 5.5K/9IP.... I may play best matchup with him throghout the year. He also could be an early canidate to go bye-bye should a need emerge or a hot player develop.
25.04 Bengie Molina, C, LAAAA
I need a C. Simple. Last pick and I choose between the Molina brothers.
For me, I never draft C's early [picked the same C last in G20 whci is 23 runds x 2o owners] as you can often play musical cather and rotate who is how/who is not. Once the elite were gone (too high for me), I never looked at a C again until the Phillips trade was announced, but I was out of position. No doubt my weakest single position, but I'd be willing to bet by years end I can create better than 16th place stats from the C slot overall.

OK, we've finished the draft. Please review the Yahoo draft grid to ensure that I have your roster correct. I plan to activate the league sometime on Monday.
You may now add your remaining rationales to that thread. No need to keep the last rounds in sequence. Free for all!
I will soon set up a separate thread for your general reactions to the draft.

18.03 Justin Duchscherer, RP, Oak
Duchcherer has shown the ability in various relief roles to put up an ERA around 3.3. His strong K/BB ratio indicates he should continue his success, although the lack of a pure fastball makes him perhaps unlikely as a closer candidate. If he upgrades his status, it is more likely to be into the A's starting rotation, where I expect he would be effective.

23.16 Frank Catalanotto, OF, TOR
I had Little Cat on my roster for the 2003 season, and was very happy being able to plug him into my roster when I needed him. He, like most other players on my roster, won't hurt me in the % categories, and will serve as a cheap source of runs, while on my active roster. He's hitting leadoff for the Jays, which may yeild some decent numbers if he stays healthy for a whole year. That's a big 'if' however, as he's never done it before.
24.01 John Lackey, SP, LAA
There's a lot of things I like about Lackey. 1. He maintains a pretty solid K rate. 2. He is 26 years old, and is entering his arbitration year 3. He has added a changeup to his repetoir of pitches. That's enough upside for me to use a pick on him this late in the draft.
25.16 Juan Rivera, OF, LAA
Well, the reason I took Rivera is simple. I have Jeff Davanon already. Davanon starts vs. righties, Rivera vs. lefties. Rivera had a great year as a reserve outfielder last year, but he won't get many at bats in the Angels lineup. He'll likely be my first to cut loose in the event I need to pick up a player off waivers.

Guys - please post your final 2 rounds directly in the rationale thread, not here. I can splice in the rationales for rounds 23 and earlier, but the intent in allowing you to post the last two rounds out of sequence was to relieve the need to copy so many over. So far, that strategy has failed miserably!

lol. well - all I can say is check out his stats. 1.29 whip, 1k per inning, and and 8-2 record last season. 1.24 career whip. I know he's not randy johnson but unlike some of the other pitchers that have been drafted, at least he's shown that he can put up some good numbers. I mean - obviously no one else in the league wanted him. he dropped to the 23.15 pick. I just don't know why. I think he's worthy of taking a chance on. el duque career stats

btw - I know he'll probably break down at some point. I'm expecting somewhere in the 100-140 IP range. that's why you can't draft him until at least the 19th round or so. I just think that until he breaks down, he'll put up good numbers.

LOL
Yeah if he can do that all season, you've got the steal of the draft. But seeing as how he's pitched like 85 innings total the past two years, I'm not expecting much from him. COule be a nice surprise, but I don't expect him to come close to those numbers. I think he'd have more value as a MR fantasy-wise, but again, who knows what will happen. That's why they play the game.

20.03 Ricky Bottalico, RP, Mil
Bottalico had control problems last year but with the Mets was able to strike out 61 batters in 70 innings and put up a 3.38 ERA. The Brewers appear ready to give Adams a full shot at the closer job but if he has problems or goes down Bottalico appears to be the likely replacement. On my team that's enough to earn him a job on the pitching staff.

23.14 Endy Chavez, OF, Was
Reports are that Frank Robinson would like to lead Chavez off if he can show he's up to the job, although ihttin 9th is also a possibility, as is not being a starting OF at all. He stole 31 bases last year and was caught 7 times, and that is his value, as a source of cheap steals. He doesn't walk, and needs to hit .285 or more to avoid being an anvil around my neck in OBP, as well as the other hitting categories except runs. He hit .277 last year and is an age-27 guy which gives him a reasonable chance to have his best hitting year, while not being so old as to lose his base-stealing ability. If I'm able to pick the right matchups to choose when he's in my lineup, his steals would be of use.

There, I did a new rationalization just so ref wouldn't laugh at me. Can't self-edit the old one away, though, as I've done an Adaware scan since then and have a different cookie.
Hopefully guru sees the 2nd one before he adds the first one.
