Here are the 16 managers for the 2006 RotoGuru Invitational Baseball Challenge:
Chris holt Oaktown As Toral jumpball KKB mMoses Dave R MC and TB Hubble Trip I am Canadian Blue Hen Jeff G CanEHdian Pride Guru
These qualifiers represent the top 6 finishers in last year's RIBC, the top 6 in last year's AAA league, the winner of each AA league, and me.
Next year, there will be two AAA leagues, so the qualifications for succession will have to change. No hurry to work that out, especially until we know how many AA leagues are formed.
I don't expect to start the draft until mid-March. We will use the Kafenatid "On the Clock" software again. I will create rotoguru-based links to the draft for those who have difficulty accessing the Kafenatid site from work, and will do that for any of the qualifying leagues that drafts on Kafenatid as well.
We will once again use Yahoo as the hosting site for the league. I will email registration info to all managers once I create the league.
Prior to the draft, we should discuss whether any revisions in the rules are desirable. I'll have to first look up the rules from last year. If anyone wants to beat me to the punch and copy them in here, be my guest. |

I know we don't draft until mid-March, but is it okay if I post my rationale for 1.01 Alex Rodriguez now? I just want to do my part so we don't fall behind.

Email sent out to all league managers with Yahoo registration info.
When you select a team name, please try to pick something that people will identify with you. Remember that our league standings are posted on the site, and those not in the league won't have to ability to look up managers.
Also, in order to allow the split standings program to work, please do not change your team name after the opening day of the season. The program uses team name to look up stats for prior days.

Point taken, Guru. My team name is a double-entendre. Does it mean that I rule? Or perhaps that we are playing by my rules? Or, as I like to say: It doesn't really matter. I'll win anyway.

Can we have a short grace period on our team name? I put it as MC & TB, but want to talk with our team spiritual leader before we go live.
Erik, need you to call me. I have your old number but can't find your new one.
How much does it cost to upgrade to a plus league? I know that our team will be paying for the stat-tracker. If a whole bunch of other people are going to do the same, then maybe we all save a few bucks chipping in and upgrading the whole league.

The cost of upgrading to a PLUS League is $124.99 for each league of up to 20 teams. It looks like if you do, everyone in the league gets StatTracker, which would cost $9.99 per team individualy. There are a few other premiums that Yahoo offers for members of a plus league. I believe that any of us would then be able to use it on any other team we have in Yahoo under the ID. I shelled out for StatTracker last season, and planned on it again this season, so I'm willing to throw in my $10. We'd just have to handle the logistics.

If the league consensus is to go with a plus league, count me in. I don't use stat tracker, I prefer to watch baseball tonight and then review box scores the next morning.
For those who do want to use stat-tracker for all of their leagues they will still have to pay individually if they want to use stat-tracker for all of their leagues. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I paid for it last year and got live stats for both of my teams. I don't care about any of the other options that come with the plus league, so to truly save any money we would need 14 of 16 managers pitching in. That isn't worth the hassle of one person collecting all the cash. Regardless, I doubt we have 14 managers who want to pay for it.

Is everyone content to stick with the same rules as last year?

I'm good with using the same rules. I was thinking of bringing up the DL slot suggestion, but re-read the arguments for both sides from last year's thread, and it seems ok without it (now if my team can just avoid injuries).

I have no rules changes to suggest.
I use StatTracker but if even a few people have bought it already, the idea of upgrading to a Plus league ought to reserved for next year (if ever). Just what are the additional premium features?

I, too, am ambivalent about StatTracker.
I'm intrigued by the suggestion in #15. My only opposition to it would be the fact that the FA market would pretty much disappear. That would be 16 more players not available as FA and that's probably 2 players shy of what was available last year. ;)

Just thinking about scheduling.
Last year, we officially started the draft on Monday, March 7, although we allowed early picks during the weekend prior. We completed the draft on March 26, so it took 19 days.
This year, the season starts on April 2. We want to finish the draft in time to get all rosters set and to allow all undrafted players to clear initial waivers. A target completion date of March 29 seems suitable. If so, that would mean that we should probably start the draft no later than March 10, which is a Friday. Perhaps we could start the clock on that Friday, but allow untimed picks to begin on Wednesday, March 8.
How's that sound? Do any of you have scheduling issues that we should be aware of in advance? Do all of you expect to be available on weekends as well as weekdays?
Meanwhile...
I'm not seeing any groundswell of support for any rule changes, so I'm going to decree that we stick with the same framework as last year.
Our next order of business, then, is to select our draft order, otherwise known as the draft2. As you may recall, we have a one round selection process in which we each decide what our draft sequence will be. The draft will snake, so that the manager with the #1 pick will have that last pick in the 2nd round. At the end of the draft, waiver priority will be assigned in the order of even round picks. So, the team with the first overall pick will have the last waiver priority to open the season.
In order to set the order for the draft2, I need two sets of "random" integers from 1-16. I will accept the first two that are emailed to me from 2 different RIBC managers. The first set will resequence an alphabetized list of the team names as currently registered at Yahoo. The second set will assign the draft order. After I receive two sets of numbers, I will post the results here.

Random numbers emailed.
If anyone wants to use this link to generate the random sequence, go for it random number sequence 1-16
I will be available all March, and will be available to check in on weekends when my pick gets close. I'll be glad to help with queues as well.
On The Clock has an auto email feature that lets you know when you are up, so I can set my cell phone text messenger as one of the recipients so I'll know when to pick if I come up when I am not near a computer.
Looking forward to the challenge of RIBC, you guys are a formidable bunch.

Yup Trip. If my 'random' numbers came in to Guru before yours, you'd be 2nd to chose your slot, and Oak at #1 would have got the player that seems to want from posts [2] and [20]. On the other end, Holt would have plenty of time to think with the second to last choice.

I'd prefer to stick with that schedule. I know that the qualifying leagues often like to get a head start so that they can stay ahead of our picks, and that's fine for me as well.
And frankly, I'm still nowhere close to being ready.

I wrote a general purpose script to display the kafenatid draft results, both in sequential pick order and also as a draft grid. Since it runs from the rotoguru1.com domain, it will work for those who are blocked from kafenatid.net at work. If anyone has limited access to both rotoguru1.com and kafenatid.net, let me know and I can set this up on an alternate domain as well.
In order to work, the draft must be set up in kafenatid as a publicly viewable draft in both formats. The RIBC and qualifying leagues are set up this way. The draft must also have started already.
Here are the two QL drafts in progress: RIBC AA Sally League
RIBC AA Mudcats League
The sequential picks are at the top. scroll down to the bottom for the grid.

These were last year's logistical guidelines for the draft:Starting at 7am, we will institute a 6 hour clock. The clock will pause between 11pm and 7am ET. If you time out, the draft will move on. Skipped picks can be made up at any time thererafter.
If your turn arises and you still have an outstanding skipped pick, I will probably move the draft on to the next picker. If we get well ahead of pace, I may relax that stance. But hopefully it will not become an issue. This also means that people on the turn have a single clock period to make their first pick, or both will be skipped.
We will use a draft discussion thread for logistical communications, to help others anticipate potential delays, to recruit someone to accept a queue, to announce or solicit trades, to coordinate changes in the clock for weekends, etc. Please check that thread regularly throughout the draft, as we will rely on it as the primary means of communication among RIBC managers.
Established draft etiquette is that no undrafted player names should be mentioned, and in the event of an infraction, should be edited out. I am planning to continue using these guidelines. The draft will commence on Wednesday morning, but the 6-hour clock will not be turned on until Friday morning. We will keep the clock turned on during weekends.

I'm posting this here just so that I have a chance of finding it next winter. (I figured I would be less likely to find it in the draft thread.)
Here is the general framework I envision for yearly succession - subject to change at my own whim:
2007 RIBC (16 teams) Top 6 from 2006 RIBC Top 3 from each AAA league (6) Winner of each AA (3) Guru
2007 AAA leagues (32 teams) Non-returning 9 from 2006 RIBC Teams ranked 4-8 in each AAA (10) Teams ranked 2-5 in each AA (12)
That produces only 31 AAA teams, so that leaves one to play with, plus openings due to attrition. Chances are that the 6th place AA teams would get to advance, and maybe more.
