Subject: RIBC 2006: draft discussion

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Tue, Mar 07, 2006, 17:40

The draft will be activated shortly, although the clock will not be turned on until Friday, March 10.

Starting on Friday morning, we will institute a 6 hour clock. The clock will pause between 11pm and 7am ET. If you time out, the draft will move on. Skipped picks can be made up at any time thererafter.

If your turn arises and you still have an outstanding skipped pick, I will probably move the draft on to the next picker. If we get well ahead of pace, I may relax that stance. But hopefully it will not become an issue. This also means that people on the turn have a single clock period to make their first pick, or both will be skipped.

Although the clock will be set at 6 hours, we cannot make satisfactory progress if many managers use much of that allowance. We need to average a little more than one round per day, so please do your best to keep up the pace. If we fall behind, managers who are chronically slow may be put on an shorter clock.

We will use this thread for logistical communications, to help others anticipate potential delays, to recruit someone to accept a queue, to announce or solicit trades, to coordinate changes in the clock for weekends, etc. Please check this thread regularly throughout the draft, as we will rely on it as the primary means of communication among RIBC managers.

Established draft etiquette is that no undrafted player names should be mentioned either here or in the rationale threads, and in the event of an infraction, should be edited out.

After two rounds have been completed, a separate draft rationale thread will be started. We will try to keep that thread on a 2 round lag. Therefore, after you make your pick in round 3, please immediately post your round 1 pick rationale, and so forth. I usually draft my rationales as I make picks, so that all I need to do when the time comes is copy and paste. I recommend that approach for everyone.

I should add that you may draft a player even if he is not currently listed on Yahoo. In that event, you will have the first rights to claim that player when he is listed, as long as you preserve that roster slot for him.

Once the draft is completed, you will no longer be able to protect a slot for any unlisted player. At that point, unlisted players will only be available through the standard waiver/free agent process.

KKB, I see that the queue/designated picker process has been enhanced. Can you elaborate on the changes?

In particular, if someone is set up as a designated picker, when and how can they access the queue? Is it solely via email, as before? Or is the queue now available at the draft site? If so, is it always viewable by the DP, or only when the queuer's pick is due?

Guru, you are correct, it has been enhanced quite a bit. Here's the details...

QUEUE MANAGEMENT
Queue Management now serves a dual purpose. It gives you a way to line up players you want, but this can be done both for your own purposes (a cheat sheet) and for your Designated Pickers. All you have to do to add players to your queue is go to Queue Management, find the player in the list of names, and add them. After you have added players, you can arrange them using the "Move Up" and "Move Down" links for each player.

There are NO more emails sent out for queues! Everything is handled through the On the Clock system now.

DESIGNATED PICKERS
Designated Pickers will no longer receive email queues. A manager's queue will now be stored in the On the Clock system and displayed as a list drop-down instead of the "Player Name" search box for their Designated Pickers and the draft admin.

However, Designated Pickers will only have access to a manager's queue if the manager makes the queue "Available." You could very well be set up as a Designated Picker for someone and if they do not have a queue or do not make it "Available," you won't have the list of players to work from. If a manager's queue is "Unavailable," it is the equivalent of them storing a cheat sheet in the system. The list will be available to them, but not to their Designated Pickers, nor the draft admin.

AVAILABLE/UNAVAILABLE
As I said above, if your queue is "Available," then your designated pickers and the draft admin will see your queue list instead of the player search box when it's your turn to pick.

If your queue is "Unavailable," your designated pickers and the draft admin WILL NOT be able to see your queue.

To butt in for a second.
I'm trying to get all the managers in RIBC AAA International to get familiar with it and use it.
It is now a great tool.
Just takes a little for everybody to figure out how to use it best.

And the Available / Unavailable function makes it a great way to store you cheatsheet as Fred said.

I'm back. I'll still leave my queue for 1.07 as 'available' so Guru can feel free to check out what happens when my pick comes up. So Guru, please feel free to execute my selection after you make yours.

I'm in a league with office mates from around the country, and this queue feature on OTC is AWESOME. Our company draft never moved this swiftly given all the inherent time zone hassles. Echoing what was said several times already, even when you set up a queue and make it 'unavailable', it is a great place to store and tweak your draft list while you wait until your pick comes up.

Wasn't blue hen the last one to select a draft position so he ended up with what was left? ;)

(Before someone corrects me - I know, that we select our positions for the entire draft, and wanting that position for rounds 1-2 is different than having it the whole draft).

It seems PayPal has his email with a "." in the middle of it instead of the required "_". I had the same issue the other night with his OTC payment. Just replace the "." with a "_" in the part before the @ and it should make it.

Just an FYI. :)

Yup. My typo. The email linked to my name in this post is the one you all should have. I have another (family and close friends only) email address with the 'dot' at a different domain. My hotmail addy is the public one I use for all online purchases and more public correspondences has the 'underscore'. Haven't used paypal in a while and was wondering why it did not remember me ;)

Hotmail did not like dots in email addresses, most of the others do. I try to be consistent.

Sorry for any confusion.

KKB - Just a thought -- is there any way to indicate on the home page if a player has a queue set? I think this would be an interesting modification so that the people drafting can gauge how quickly things may go based on those on autopick status --

Thanks,

There is no "autopick status," so showing that someone has a queue might be a bit misleading. Even if someone has a queue, a person (the manager, a designated picker, or the admin) still needs to make the actual pick.

Queues are the way to go. Anyone who is 4 or less picks away should consider posting their very short queue on the draft site and making it available for a desinated picker.

Another alternative is I'll be glad to help out anyone who needs it. For those who want to arrange something, I can send out text messages when your pick is up and list the last x players taken. Then I can get the text back with the pick, and either post it here for Guru to execute, or if you select me as a designated picker, I can process the selection myself.

My apologies for contributing to the May 19 estimate (#36) which is probably into June by now . . . when I was able to check today just before a lunch meeting, there was only 4 picks made -- too early to put a queue together for the 11th pick.

I wonder if I would have even thought to put Ortiz in the queue at that point, since I expected him to be long gone before 11?

Not a big fan of Beltran this year. I don't think adjusting to New York was the entire reason he struggled. I think he overachieved in Houston. And his steals aren't exactly going up, I would think.

It's very, very early, but I have to say that I expect a fun season with Helton and Dunn on board. Right where I wanted to be at this point.

I left a 2-man queue available to DPs. Don't think Trip is planning to take the guy at #1. This is only for round 4 - please don't continue to use my queue in round 5.

Rationale for Dunn forthcoming...

Nice one, TB. Actually, as I'll say in my rationale, I knew if I didn't get Prior I'd get one of Randy, Harden, or Felix. But if I didn't get Gagne (or Street, really), the closer pickings were getting pretty slim. Based on what happened after that, looks like I made the right call.

Now Prior just has to have the 25 win, 350 strikeout season we're all expecting...

This is the third straight year I've had Prior in an RIBC league. Where did I draft him? 6th overall in 2004, 16th overall in 2005, and 52nd overall in 2006.

August 1st?

I was wondering if it could be fixed by drafting Konerko for Pride in the current spot and then trading the player to his team. I am thinking that if Dave R says that he wanted the player he got and not the one that IAC got, it should all be good. If so, then we just have to make sure the rest of the draft picks are correctly changed.

You know those Canadians - they all look alike, eh?

When all is said and done, cEHp should have Konerko (5.08), IAC should have Carlos Lee (5.10), and MC/TB should have cEHp's 5.16 pick.

Dave R has already confirmed that his pick of Lopez (5.09) is fine.

All of the 6 RIBC-related leagues have now completed the first round. There were 10 players selected in the 1st round of every draft. Here is the consensus order:

Alex Rodriguez (1)
Albert Pujols (2)
Vladimir Guerrero (3-6)
Johan Santana (3-6)
Mark Teixeira (4-5)
Manny Ramirez (6-13)
David Ortiz (5-12)
David Wright (7-13)
Jason Bay (6-14)
Bobby Abreu (7-15)

This pick had me a little nervous. I waited 12 hours for MC/TB to trade off their pick...

I am not sure if that is supposed to be a jab at us, but 7 of those hours were when the clock was shut off (midnight to 7 am) and a couple more were when the draft was shut down because you picked out of order. Each of us are in different times zones. You should be happy we traded the pick, because Carlos Lee was the guy we planned on taking in this spot.

Also, the draft wasn't shut down because that pick was out of order. The draft was shut down because I processed the trade incorrectly, and I had to get KKB to fix things because there was no "normal" way to do that. So IAC had no role in the shutdown. The shutdown was solely due to my error.

Gotcha, Guru. We normally pick fairly quickly. I explained some of it in my yet-to-be-posted rationale, but I will provide a quick break down.

Our plan was to take Carlos Lee, but there were a dozen other players we were comfortable with in that spot as well. We hadn't finalized our plans when the draft made it back to us at 12:30 am. I wanted to confer with my partner before making the pick or a trade, but he already went to bed. I talked with Motley at 8:14 AM CST (our time zone) and posted the trade at 8:30 AM CST. I do not know why I put EST above in post 100, but that mistake could have caused some confusion. By the time we posted the trade we had only used 2 1/2 hours of clock time to make this deal, but I know it messed the rhythm of the draft for the morning. I apologize for that.

RE TB (152):
I've competed against MC in the past in several of the RI's and A leagues in the past and have never had an issue with his managerial etiquet. I haven't played many formats against you, nor do I have anything against you, but, I'm pretty sure our 6 hours of aloted time is mainly to become "aware" that we are on the clock, and not for determining our picks so much (This is the impression that Guru has given in the past in concern to why a person who has end picks shouldn't take 2x the established time limit.) So if a manager shows up, and says that they aren't properly preprared to make their pick, and that they'll "sleep on it"...
That said... Yes it was a minor stab; but mainly it was to point out that the amount of time I had to wait on that pick was killing me with anticipation.

I'm still hopeful that we can finish by March 29. I will be leaving home for a family memorial service (great aunt - 102 years old) the evening of March 29, so I'd really like to have everything wrapped up in time to activate the league at Yahoo before I leave. If we continue at this week's pace, we should make it.

IAC (163) - Thanks for taking the time to explain. Sorry again about the confusion. In hindsight, I shouldn't have left a reply or at least not left one that made it sound like we needed to sleep on it. Motley Crue had already crashed and we hadn't made a 100% decision on who we wanted the last time we talked. It was just before 11pm and there were 4 picks in front of us. We really didn't think it would make it back to us until the morning. I didn't have the nuts to pull the trigger without getting his final stamp of approval. Motley Crue is the brains of this team, I just have the good looks.

I can relate to the anxiety of being one pick away overnight, especially when there is a certain player you want to grab. I think it happened to us a couple times last year and I thought I was going to go crazy.

RE: 88, I'm taking the under...

From Rotowire
Prior will have his right shoulder examined in Los Angeles Wednesday after experiencing soreness during a throwing session, according to ESPN. It looks like Will Carroll could be vindicated after all.

Prior will be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum, never a name you want to hear associated with one of your players. Perhaps it's just a minor thing, as Prior does live in San Diego and the Cubs do have Wednesday off, but given his injury history we'll be following this closely.

Here's a sobering observation:

Two-thirds of each roster has yet to be drafted. The means that two-thirds of the players on every roster are still out there in the available pool.

So many needs, such limited options...

We seem to be in a nice rhythm. The selection times for the 34 picks made so far today are eerily similar to the selection times for the 36 yesterday. If we continue to do two rounds a day, even taking into account a little less movement on the weekend, we have 7-8 days left.

Heads up to blue hen. For about 24 hours, Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon I will not be available to assist in messaging and selecting, so assuming you are still traveling, I hope you have enough advance warning to coordinate with someone else.

Friday 1PM through Saturday afternoon when I am not around (I'll be heading to Philadelphia to watch my alma mater Albany play in their first Division I NCAA Basketball tournament, against UConn no less), I'll probably set up a mega-queue and make Guru and TB my DP since they can execute my selection right after they make their selection. I also can be reached by txt (see post 39) in a crunch, but I want to avoid that if I can since sending messages is not something I want to do while driving or after the game at a local pub catching up with old friends, for St Patricks night.

After 14 rounds some of America's most famous judges have decided to rate the performance of each manager:

American Fantasy Baseball Idol:

CanEHdian Pride
Randy: Yo dawg -- man, so far you've just been aight for me. You came out the gates pretty strong, but had some pitchy parts in the middle where you settled for some players that you may have been able to get later in the game. Your team looks good so far but you'll need to really bring it as the draft goes on to get yourself amongst the contenders --- not bad though so far bro, keep it comin

Paula: You are a proud manager aren't you, and you should be. You have such energy and enthusiasm. You are making trades and really having faith in the players you are selecting even if they come with critism. You're draft times are amazing and you never keep people waiting -- you are like a bright fantasy light

Simon: I'm not overly impressed with your performance so far. You have to be more patient, I mean you have been reaching to grab more athletes in their mid-twenties then Paula at the last Laker Girl reunion. You'll need to really navigate the end of the draft well if you want to avoid a season of mediocrity.

Hubble
Randy: Solid so far -- especially lately dawg. Thing is, when you are a defending Champion steppin' up to a new level you've gotta be better than solid. For me you just haven't been bringing enough. If Carlos Beltran turns it around like Mariah Carey in 2005 then you may just have somethin' to work with and I'll be singing a different tune so you better be hopin' your risk/reward guys bring somethin' to the table or it'll be a long season, bro

Paula: Hubble, you have such great presence and confidence in your picks. I think you've been so great lately and you will carry that over through the whole draft. You have a Champion's spirit and I think you are a heck of a person. You are like a shining light.

Simon: I think your name is fitting because your vision is about as blurry as that of the telescope. I think you are banking on several retreads to carry your team and the stars don't align perfectly you will be in for a dreadful year. The only thing I think you will be repeating this year is "Why did I draft Beltran?".

Trip

Randy: Yo man -- I'd started to write you off early on but honestly I think your team is startin' to look pretty hot dude. I think you reached a bit in some of your earlier picks (4-6) but have been strong through your last bunch. If you keep that momentum dude, I think you are looking like top 5 material.

Paula: Trip, I just think you are great. You have emerged as a manager with such energy and an amazing heart. Keep it up, I think you can really do well this year

Simon: Well, I think you definately tripped out of the gate but you've recovered fairly impressively. I am not completely sold that you will be a contender but you've done well in rounds 7-14 and if you keep up at this rate you've got a chance to win this outright. You'll need to manufacture some save numbers and strengthen your team in some other key positions but you've done alright so far.

More comments as the 14th round progresses. Pride out.

American Fantasy Baseball Idol (cont'd)

Blue Hen

Randy: Hen dude, I'm not feelin' your team bro. You reached quite a bit early on and are taking a lot of chances on guys coming back from injuries. You'll have to pick up some hot bats late in the draft and address some issues on your pitching staff but I think the damamge is already done bro

Paula: Blue, I think that you've made some really difficult choices and stayed loyal to the players that you believe in which is admirable. You have a great spirit but I don't think your team will be able to finish in the top half of the league.

Simon: Simply put, your team is a disaster. Unless there is a category for "Trips to the disabled list" I really don't think you have much of a chance for success.

Athletics Guy

Randy: Ya know Mach, I can't really say if I've figured your team out yet dude. I think you've been conservative, you haven't reached too many times and have put together a good group of players. You're definately takin' a non-traditional approach which I respect but it's leavin' mad holes on your roster and it'll be interesting to see how you address them. Youre teams aight but it isn't blowing me away. We'll see by round 25 how your livin'.

Paula: Mach, you have such a free spirit and I love the approach you are taking. It is refreshing to see your enthuiasm shine through. Don't be afraid to take a risk and get every player your heart desires. I think you have real star potential with this team.

Simon: Personally, I think it's a mess. There's very little that intrigues me about this roster and I think that you got most of your offensive players on a discount because they are well past their prime. You played safe but I think that in the end you'll be missing the impact players you need while you rely on declining players to carry the bulk of the load. A safe and mediocre team -- for a manager of your calibre I'm quite disappointed.

jumpball

Randy: Dude, I think you're putting it down boy! You've got a nice mix of young talent and veteran consistancy. So far of the teams we've judged I think you've got the hottest squad. Keep this approach dawg and I think you are a serious contender....WE GOT A HOT ONE TONIGHT!!

Paula: I love how you are approaching this competition. You are staying conservative but your creativity is shining through on many picks. You are an inspiration to young fantasy players everywhere.

Simon: Well I don't know what my counterparts are seeing but I'm less than impressed with this group of has-beens. Let's be real -- once players go down hill they don't magically return to form a few years later. It would be wonderful if guys like Glaus and Nomar could relive their glory days but it won't happen. You started out on the right path on your first 3 picks but after that I think its a bloody mess of players that won't deliver on expectations. Balancing this with young talent was a smart idea but you moved too early on many of your up and comers and the balance was forced and will not help your team. I'd put you in the lower middle of the division unless you can pull off a miracle on the backend of the draft.

My apologies for holding everyone up tonight . . . just now got home after spending way too much time in the hospital helping a family member that sliced a tendon in a wrist.

Thank you all for being patient.

And regarding the Randy guy above . . . I kinda like his opinion! :-)

Keep 'em comin' cEHp!

My reasoning is in my rationale, but yes, I was targeting Bill Mueller with that particular pick.

You probably could have picked a better metaphor, but if you think Bill Mueller was worth chasing, I'm eager to see the rationale.

Not that it's even a bad pick. It's a pretty good pick, particularly how deep we are in the draft. I'm just curious why he would have been on your radar so prominently.

326KrazyKoalaBears

It's not so much that Mueller was on my radar for many rounds and I kept passing him up as it is that I looked at his stats and what my team's and other team's needs were a few rounds ago and figured I could pick up Mueller with my 14.14 pick. It turns out I was right.

In reality, given that holt was down a 2B and Toral was down a MI going into the 14th round, as well as most other managers being down a 2B, 3B, MI, CI, or some combination of those positions, I had very little expectation that Mueller, who qualifies at both 2B and 3B, would make it to the 15th round and far less that he would make it back to me in the 16th.

So, I grabbed him where I had planned on taking him for the last 2+ rounds. I think had I traded down with Mach, I wouldn't have gotten Mueller and I would have been shooting myself in the foot at the MI slot. Or relying on a non-veteran player, which I was very hesitant to do at the MI slot.

My ratiionale will cover more of the reason why I picked Mueller instead of other players.

Are you kidding? I'm asking anyone who will listen for help with my RIBC team. As it turned out, I ran into this guy, and showed him my team and who I was considering. He really gave me a hard time about Olly and told me to take Cabrera. In the end, I got both.

Timing is everything, just like EH picking up Ambiorix Burgos not too long after the news he will close for KC until MacDougal heals.

Maybe I should wait the whole 6 hours to pick, just in case new developments come in ;)
