Last year in AAA we saw a manager take two NON-Closing RP's in rounds 8&9... while his strategy wasn't bad (he had good pitching #s all year), his hitting #s were severely hurt by this early reach at Ratio's dominance.

I was expecting an RP grab since arround the 13th round... with Shields and Linebrink off now however... not too many more "sure" solid 8th inning guys left.

I think most people are still trying to fill out their lineups. I definitely knew Linebrink and Weathers and Burgos were still around but I also knew I'd rather have Eckstein and Kinsler than [UNDRAFTED] and [UNDRAFTED]. You are right - round 9 is WAY too early to think about middle relievers.

I disagree. I haven't grabbed a set-up man yet but it's a great tactic. Contributes solid rate numbers and is also next in line if the "proven closer" goes down. I was hoping folks like Linebrink would last longer but am not surprised they didn'e, here.

It's always good to know someone else was looking at one my picks... sometime i feel like i see everyone smiling when i draft some1, thinking "OMG, poor Hubble, he does it again..."

I actually renamed my team in yahoo as being: Hubble's Has-Been, if i can grab some prospect now... i will unbaptise it.

Nah, Hubble was the one that got me. Devine was next on my list, right after Baez. I almost took him the first pass, but didn't like the OF options after Reed. Would Reed have made it back to me? I know at least one person after me would have taken him.

And wouldn't you know it, I STILL didn't take a reliever on the way up.

I was reading Trip's rationale on Gathright and started to laugh about his "getting Pierre in the 16th round" comment based upon Gathright's rep as not having a strong OBP.....I was surprised to see he has a career .388(ish) OBP in the minors - I didn't realize he had shown that in the minors....that IS a steal if he can come close to something in between his minor league OBP and what he did in the majors last year. .350 and you're jumping for joy.

American Fantasy Baseball Idol (cont'd)

I AM CANADIAN

Randy: Yo dude, I'm worried about this team bro -- you are relying too heavily on some aging arms. Definately should have grabbed a young starter to inject some life into your team. Basically your team outside of some maybe Barmes and Chavez are known quantites. Project those numbers out and you are a below average squad. Nothing really makes me believe to expect anything else.
Paula: IAC, you have such passion for the draft and it looks like you were trying to execute on your plan. I think you came up a little short in the middle rounds. Keep your positive attitude and I'm sure you can manage your team and improve it as the year goes on
Simon: Two words: Train Wreck. The team just isn't good. Your youngest pitcher is 33 years old and he has never really been that good. With 3 starting relievers, drafting Howry was a mis-step when you could have addressed other areas that need to add young players. I don't expect much from this team.

SANFORDORS

Randy: Yo dawg, you've almost got it bang on. I like the balance you bring with your pitching staff and through the offensive categories. I think you started real strong, had a couple missteps through the middle rounds and are struggling on the backend. Team is above average but will need to be managed to take it to the top
Paula: It is so much fun to see an experienced manager like yourself show such passion and energy amongst the young, up and comers that are trying to take over the RIBC. You bring a great dynamic to the league and I think your team is solid. With a little TLC you can bring it into contention.
Simon: I really think Randy hit the nail on the head. Your team isn't bad but as the draft has gone on you have been taking more and more questionable selections. You definately have a good balance and a solid corps but I don't think you have the depth of some other teams which may be your downfall

TBRaiders

Randy: Yo dude, not sure what to make of this team man. I don't think your approach paid off and I think your gonna be hurtin' in some important categories. I don't see much balance in your pitching and you've got some old bodies. You definatley made some solid picks but I don't think you made enough to really put it down and make any noise this year. I expected you to be one that everyone would be chasing but I think you've got too much to overcome. Team needs work dude.
Paula: I love your confidence and the swagger that you approach the draft with. As long as you believe in every pick you have a great chance to succeed. You are a great manager and it may mean some hardwork but I'm sure you are up for it. I believe in you, because you project greatness.
Simon: Whoever said that two heads are better than one was not speaking of fantasy drafts. There doesn't seem to be much consistancy in the picking and the strategy is a muddled mess. No balance, no plan. I can't see the team being managed any better than the draft was. Definately a team headed for trouble.

I figured out my comp problem. it was an old logitech mouse driver that was causing most of the crashes (I changed OS's recently). I'm still having some probs with other drivers here and there but it seems that the mouse driver was the main culprit.

Jeffg

Randy: Yo dude -- I'm lovin' the way things are shaping up for you here dawg. I wasn't expecting this kind of performance in the draft comin' from a AAA team but you are puttin' it down. I can list of a ton of great picks that you made and as long as Turnbow can represent this year, you are definately a contender. Nice balance, strong managing makes this a top 3 team coming out of the draft.
Paula: Jeff, you have such passion and really took control of the draft both from a performance perspective as well as making it run smoothly. Leaders are good at everything they touch and I think that leadership will be key in taking this great team to the top. You can win this if you stay hungry.
Simon: I'm quite impressed. A strong team from top to bottom. You'll need a few breaks along the way but at the present time it wouldn't shock me if in October I was told you took the league. Impressive draft.

Rotoguru.com

Randy: Guru, my main man -- solid balance on your roster which is key. Depth is lacking in your OF and pitching ranks. I think you need to spend more time strengthening your offense and less time on piling up MRs. I've got you in the middle of the pack right now, good approach but definately some mis-steps along the way. I don't like your bully at all and it may hurt you down the line.
Paula: What can I say, you are the Guru and you approach the draft with an amazing aura. I think you have a strong team and if you can summon some of that amazing energy you can easily be a top 5 team without making any changes.
Simon: Definately a different approach than most but the end result is not bad. Nothing about your teams knocks me over and there were some reaches early on that could have made your team mediocre overall. With strong management you can contend but currently you are middle of the road.

fastat3m

Randy: Dawg, you are a smart cat when it comes to baseball. One of the toughest managers around and you didn't disappoint one bit. Great approach to your overall selection but I think your balance is a little off. Speed may be a concern but everywhere else your team is hella tight. A definite chance to repeat knowing how strong you manage in-season. You stepped up to the plate and delivered. WE GOT A HOT ONE TONIGHT!
Paula: Chris, you approach every draft with such intensity. I'm worried that you don't truly have the amount of fun that you should because you are stuck in the analytical trap due to your fantasy genius. Have fun, and let your energy carry you to new heights.
Simon: Truly I'm not surprised. This is what you expect from a champion. The team is solid though I think rounds 15-18 were weak. May cost you and make you do some extra work. I expect to see you near the top the majority of the way. Good work.

mMoses

Randy: Moses dude, I'm not crazy about this team man. I think you were several rounds early on a number of picks and didn't do much to make up for it as the draft went on. You're gonna have to put in crazy work to get this into contention. It'll be tough dawg, it'll be tough.
Paula: Sorry moses, I've loved your energy throughout the draft but I'm not crazy about the result. Keep your chin up and work hard and you may be able to surprise a lot of people.
Simon: mMoses, mMoses -- there is a better chance of you parting the Atlantic than this team doing anything other than placing over 14th. The RIBC is the pinnacle of fantasy baseball and I don't think you were ready this year. Disasterous draft all around.

Fred

Randy: Fred man -- looking good. Strong draft, great balance throughout. I like how you are puttin' it down. Depth will be a key for you, as some teams will really be hurtin' if they face injuries -- you've addressed your bench. I like what I see, need a bit of work but definately a contender.
Paula: Fred, you are super. This team is great and it shows the hard work you've put into both putting together this phenomenal website and researching your draft. I hope you take this home, and you have the team to do it.
Simon: Fred, my only question is...did you think the draft stopped in round 17?? You must have stopped drinking coffee because the only thing that can explain the back-end of your draft is Kaffine withdrawls. You had great momentum until you started drafting useless retreads. I had you slated to be top 3-5 but you did nothing in the last 5 rounds to help your cause. Disappointing effort, could have really had something to work with.

Toral

Randy: Intersting group here dawg. I like what you've done and I think you got good balance throughout. You've been solid from Round 1 and have put yourself in position to contend all year. Starting pitching needs a little support but other than that I'm a fan boi.
Paula: I say the same thing every time. Basically I'm just here so Simon has something to stare at between takes. I'm done for the rest of the day.
Simon: Toral -- You've done well. You should contend and I think you have had one of the better drafts. You are also one of the only people in the world who are more blunt with people then I am. I want to father your child. Marry me.

holt

Randy: A lot of question marks dawg, but not a bad effort. I think with some TLC this team can do farily well this year. Definaltey have strong depth which should be an asset. Teams aight baby, keep workin' and you could be a contender.
Paula: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Simon: Not overly impressed. The #1 pick should help and you haven't made a complete waste of it. You've done well, above average team if you can manage it right but a few unlucky break (Cuddyer/McDougall not returning) and you could be in trouble.

Just scanned quickly through the picks from the last 5 rounds of last year's draft. Here are some of the players who were taken in rounds 21-25 (numbers in parens show round taken last year and this year):

Noah Lowry (21, 11)
Jhonny Peralta (21, 5)
Jorge Cantu (21, 6)
Willy Taveras (21, 10)
Joe Blanton (22, 12)
Huston Street (22, 4)
Chris Reitsma (23, 11)
Jose Contreras (24, 13)
Kyle Farnsworth (25, 19)

All certainly made significant positive contributions last year, and all were gone by the 13th round this year except for Farnsworth, who would have gone higher if he had remained in the same situation that he finished last season.

Reading your rationale for last year's 23.07 pick sure sounds like something else I have read recently. The name Brandon McCarthy comes to mind, lol.

I am surprised seeing how many final rationales weren't completed last year. I thought it was generally understood that if you accepted an invite to the RIBC, you knew they had to be completed. Reading last years rationale on Reitsma and then remembering we were the team who drafted him this year is making me woozy.

The guy is asking you what relevance she has to Benson.

I am just excited that the entire Orioles' rotation was drafted. Maybe that is a good sign for Baltimore.

I suppose 3/5 of it will be on waivers by the 1st of May, but regardless.

Sorry to butt in, but I can explain blue hen's picture. The relevance is that the chair she is sitting on is the same chair that Kris Benson bought for his home in Maryland. The woman on the chair is irrelevant.

By the way, CehP's American Idol stuff is really funny.

You can draft anyone. If you draft someone who is not listed on Yahoo, a placeholder will be assigned to your roster, and you will have first rights to that player if/when they are listed.

After the draft ends, you may no longer reserve a roster spot for an unlisted player. You must wait until the player is listed, and then go through the regular waiver claiming process.

So if you want Anna, round 25 is probably your last chance.

Dmitri Young is elgible in the OF -- I had 4 at the time. Catchers are more likely to get injured then OFs and OFs are much more readily available on the WW. Why would I not pick up a backup catcher before a 5th OF...especially when the pickings are so slim.

Guru, I was poking around the Yahoo! site and noticed that you have a bunch of rounds already entered. As a commissioner myself, I know that's a painful process!

I also noticed that the teams aren't in the actual drafting order. If you set the draft order now, the waiver priority will automatically be set correctly when you start the season.

Thanks for administating both the draft and the league.

I started a general Draft recap thread. You are not required to contribute to that, but I encourage you to do so.

Please post remaining rationales here ASAP. I won't list those that we are awaiting - you should know who you are.

Thanks to everyone for a well paced draft. We got off to a sluggish start, but the pace turned out to be just fine. I'm sure the OTC software played a big role in keeping things moving along - especially use of the improved queue process. I've given KKB some ideas on possible software enhancements for future drafts, but I'm sure he'd like feedback from anyone who has ideas to share.

I will have all players entered at Yahoo by tomorrow. At that time, I will launch the league. All undrafted players will be on waivers for two days, after which you may make waiver or free agent transactions as usual. The initial waiver priorities will be the reverse of the first round draft order.

I'll also post a consolidated summary of draft picks (high, low, avg, etc.) for all six RIBC drafts, but that will wait until the final league has completed its draft.

Holt drafted Uggla, who is not yet available in Yahoo. When Uggla is listed, holt may pick up Uggla after he clears waivers (unless I can figure out how to make that change while Uggla is still on waivers).

Aaron Rakers (BAL, torn labrum surgery)

Craig Dingman (DET, not officially out for the season, but you have to believe that artery bypass surgery doesn't have a quick timetable for a return)

Juan Padilla (NYM, Tommy John surgery)

Shinji Mori (TAM, torn labrum)

Luis Ayala (WAS, Tommy John surgery)

And if needed, Brian Lawrence (WAS, not officially out, but he has a torn labrum and rotator cuff so it's likely)

There is a function under commisioner tools to change a player's waiver date. Also under commisioner tools there is an option to edit rosters and add a player. Even if Yahoo recognizes these moves as a waiver pickup, there is also a commisioner tool option to reset waiver priorities.

I made the following placeholder substitutions:

holt: Dingman subs for Uggla
KKB: Ayala subs for Zumaya
Chris: Rakers subs for Russ Martin
TB/MC: Mori subs for Markakis

When the drafted player becomes available, please let me know and I can probably make the substitution directly using commissioner powers. Failing that, each team may pick up the target player after he has cleared waivers.

If a placeholder player is dropped before the originally drafted player is available, then that team forfeits its priority claim on that player.

I plan to release the league later this morning. All undrafted players will be on waivers for 2 days. During that period, please review your roster to make sure I have entered the correct players.

Noted. It appears that I cannot make that change immediately, as it will not let me move undrafted players from waivers. (It does allow that capability during the season, but I guess it only works for dropped players, not undrafted ones.)

You can make that change on Wednesday, after players clear waivers. Or I can do it then, too - whoever gets there first.

Uggla is now in the yahoo database. I shot an email question to yahoo on adding players through their help queries, but without getting any type of response, I have no idea how successful it was. MC, note the all-caps "AND" in the statement. Sure BAL plays before 04/06, but 04/06 is the first time that you'll need an OF/UTL and BAL happens to play on that date. Thus, 04/06 would be a prime date to have Markakis on your team. Before then, you can complete your lineup with other players (i.e. - you don't NEED Markakis before then).

After recent calculations, I have decided that you and TB need to communicate more. ;)
