Its back for 2006. The MLB.com game where you pick a player each day trying to create the longest hitting streak. I know this does not draw that much interest, but if you are feel free to join the group called rotoguru. (password=rotoguru).

I put a team in there. Now I just have to remember to make some picks every week or so. It's a cool game, but I could kick myself a couple times last year when I forgot to go in and make new picks. I think I will try to ride the Rollins streak until it ends.
They have a Survivor game in there kinda like J's "pick the loser" game. I signed up for that one too. I didn't create a league, but if someone else wants to, I will toss my team in the league.

There is no division for the MLB.com survivor game, but I just joined that as well.
There is also a Beat the Streak HR eddition on MLB.com, it looks like if you enter that, it adds you to the same division that you are in for the hitting streak contest.

Going to have to have a lot of luck with the HR streak. Any strategy you are going to use with that, or just pick mashers at random? I see what you mean, too. I added a team and it put it in the same division.

Great, now you jinxed it! ;)
Prior to the 29 and counting (Damon tonight 6/6) I have going now, my best in any year in this contest before this season was 11. Yes, I am pretty psyched that I passed the half way mark to 57 (and $100,000) last night. MLB.com actually have prizes for 35 and 45 game streaks, so hopefully I can stay lucky and keep this going at least another week or two. Since the streak hit 20 or so, I have actually started to spend more than the few seconds I usually dedicate to this game looking at match ups.
Of course, it just takes one 0-fer to end it.

MLB.com Beat the Streak is back for 2007.
Looks like you cannot set up a division this year, but they made the selection process alot easier, and have more batter vs pitcher info available on the selection screen.

Seriously, other then taking early in the order hitters to ensure more ABs, not really. Its very random, which is why it makes for an easy (and great) game.

Alot of new features in this year's version of the game. You click on results, you can see the top 15 most selected players for any day.
MLB also launched Home Run Beat the Streak their 2007 edition. I think the best I have ever done is 2 in a row, although I am off to a good start with 1 in a row, I had Prince Fielder last night.

Yeah its interesting to see who has all been picked thus far in that top 15 thing. Good to see a bunch of 0fers in those lists!
I picked Orlando Hudson on day 2, and he didn't make the top 15. Rewarded me by going 3 for 4.

What happens if a game is rained out and you picked a guy in that game?

Official Rules
If a player you select does not play during the day for which you selected him for any reason, your streak will NOT end. A hitting streak will also NOT end if all the selected player's plate appearances (one or more) result in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. A hitting streak will end if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit. Your streak will remain intact in the event of a cancelled or postponed game.

The problem is that Polanco has a .332 AVG, which is very tempting in BTS, but his longest hit streaks are 7, 6, and 6 games. He gets his AVG by having a lot of multi-hit games:
One-hit games: 14 Multi-hit games: 23 Three(plus)-hit games: 10
This is why MLB.com showing you AVG when picking players is a bit misleading.

Two different managers have set the all-time BTS record in the last couple days with 45 game hitting streaks.
One manager missed yesterday (ending his run at 45 games) with Jose Reyes.
The other manager tied the new record of 45 yesterday, and is going for 46 games today with Jose Reyes.
A 57-game hitting streak is worth $100,000.

The person with 46 lost their streak last night with Magglio Ordonez. Mags went 0-2 then was lifted mid-game as Detroit was getting blown out by the Angels.
My best so far this season is just 15, over the weekend, I lost a 12 game streak. In the HR game I got 2 in a row several times, but no better.

Bummer for that guy. I was cheering for him to get to 57.

I actually won one survivor segments a couple of years ago. MLB wouldn't let me play in the final segment against all of the segment winners because I lived in Florida. The finals winner only got WS tix. I did get a really cool Canseco Devil Rays jersey. That was much better than WS tix. Don't you think?
I've never had much luck in the Beat The Streak. I always pick Ichiro or Pujols on the day he go 0 fer.

I played on and off the last few years. My streaks often get broken because I forget to pick.
My longest was 19, in like 2006. Don't think I played last year.
Is there a way to view the popular picks for that day? Not so helpful when you can only view the past. Who cares who people picked on previous days?

congrats!
anyway,
If you select an Indians or Royals hitter in today's doubleheader, your streak will only continue if the player gets at least one hit in both games in which he plays on that day (unless all the selected player's plate appearances result in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt). In the event that a player you select gets at least one hit in both games of a doubleheader, your streak will only increase by one game.
what a load of crap. The whole point of doubleheaders is to give you an advantage with more PAs. A hit in BOTH!? You'd have to be an idiot to take them now. They're saying you need a hit in 2 straight games to even count as 1.

Well, it is a "game" hitting streak, not a "day" hitting streak. If a player gets a hit in the first one but then takes an 0-fer in the second, his real life hitting streak ends.

29 hits in one game and 8 in the other. So yeah, would've been a huge mistake to pick a player from that.
By the way, ksoze, by your logic if a player got hits in both games, your streak should be extended by 2. They were only going to extend by 1. IOW, the doubleheader cannot help you, only hurt you.
"In the event that a player you select plays in a double-header, your streak will only continue if the player gets at least one hit in both games in which he plays on that day (unless all the selected player's plate appearances (one or more) result in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt). For the avoidance of doubt, in the event that a player you select gets at least one hit in both games of a double-header, your streak will continue, but your streak will only increase by one (1) hit for that day, and not two (2) hits. Please note that this rule has changed for the 2008 season."
They changed it from past years to prevent people from taking advantage of doubleheaders, I guess, but now it's all the way the other way. In the past, you'd be stupid not to go with a guy playing in a doubleheader. Now you'd be stupid to go with a guy in a doubleheader.

Chipper Jones goes 0/5 in 12 innings and he was probably the most popular pick for 4/30. Gosh. 12 innings and he can't manage a single hit.
The broke up a bunch more of the 20+ streaks, including the two longest streaks going! Rios went hitless breaking up another long one.
Pujols and Lee got hits, so there are two active 28 game streaks.
Most of the longest ones were broken up in the last two days, however.

I should have a 5 gamer right now, but they might decide to royally screw everyone by saying anyone who picked a player in the boston-milwaukee game had to have hits in both.
That would be totally unfair because I made my pick before the early deadline Friday and then for the next day. I even checked right before the game and Boston was still scheduled to play Friday night. At some point, they postponed it and played a doubleheader Saturday, which left people very little time to change their picks.

Chipper was the most picked player yesterday. Stupid, IMO, but he did get hits in both games.
Picking a player in a doubleheader, even if he's been awesome like Chipper, is never better than picking another good hitter in one game.

And the guy I originally picked (and who was my pick for the homer BTS), Brandon Phillips, went 2/5 with a homer!

if your guy doesn't get any at bats, the streak stays at what it is.
Dammit, I tried to change Chipper to Ian Kinsler, but the Braves play at 1:10 and it closed 15 minutes early! It usually closes 5 minutes before gametime, not 15. So I'm locked into Chipper (who probably won't start. Not good, because he might pinch hit), the Cubs, and Josh Hamilton (for HR BTS. He's not playing also).

I had an 11, broken by an 0-4 JD Drew (against Mr.Hits-allowed Jamie Moyer), followed immediately by my current 10 gamer. Today was funky with Magglio Ordonez. He got a hit in his first AB, then got hurt shortly after. Very fortunate.

Out on vacation in LA. Been away from home for 6 days, but kept my streak going until Friday.
Managed to successfully pick a player for 18! (excluding 2 days where Chone Figgins was picked and didn't play). 18 is a personal record, I believe.
Pedroia went 0/3 on Friday to break it up. He did come to the plate in the 9th, but walked to load the bases instead of getting a hit. Oh well. Rebounded on Saturday when Pedroia went 2/5

Pedroia actually walked twice on Friday. Dammit Dustin, you're supposed to keep the walks down!
It turns out that 3 of the top 5 picked on Friday went hitless.
10.1% picked Pedroia, more than any other player. Hitless. 7.5% picked Ichiro (2nd). Hitless. 3.7% picked Ellsbury (5th). Hitless.
The 1 and 2 hitters for Boston didn't get a hit. Unusual.

A new feature for BTS in the second half of the season seems to be the ability to see your standings within a group I created the public group rotogurupies if anyone wants to join. Just select the tab GROUPS and enter our group name. Then anytime you click STANDINGS, you see a drop down where you can filter to just your group members.

BTW, it looks like our results in 'Group Standings' only include our stats that accumulated while we were a part of that group.
From their FAQ: Q: How do group standings work? A: Group standings are based on the date each user joins the group. For example, a user who joins the group on July 1 with a 5-day streak and successfully picks a player to get a hit for July 1 will appear in the overall standings with a streak of 6 and in the group standings with a streak of 1.

Streak for the Cash seems like one of those games that are not too time consuming each morning, although the ability to pick another matchup from that day once your selected game has ended seems like we may be surfing back to that page several times throught the day. When it is open to non-insiders, I'd give it a try.

so when I pick a team for the beat the streak thing where you pick a team to win each day, I look at the odds on the games.
Dodgers were -220, losing 7-0 to Giants in 4th. Kuroda getting hammered. (I picked the Dodgers)
Red Sox were -179, lost 7-5.
Yankees were -173, lost 13-4. (I was at this game)
Brewers were -171, lost 6-4.
Four heaviest favorites all lose.

for beat the streak, I took Polanco. For BTS HR, I took Thames. Byrd has given up a lot of hits and homers this year. Byrd throws 7.2 of 4 hit shutout ball, and Edward Mujica throws 1.1 of perfect ball. Just my luck.

Ugh, after my long streak, I can't seem to get anything going. Howie Kendrick twice broke my streaks by going 0/3, and yesterday Polanco went 0/4 to break up a 2 game streak.
Today I picked Jimmy Rollins and he went 4/4. I should get extra points! :)
I think I may compile some statistics (how often my guys have gotten hits and what their overall average is).

Leading the group now. Just had a 6 game streak busted by Markakis, even though the Orioles had 11 runs and 13 hits, IIRC.
0/4 with 2 walks.
The two others I seriously considered?
Brian Roberts, a teammate, who got 2 hits.
Ichiro, who went 0/4.

This is messed up. When I pick a guy I don't expect to play to extend the streak, he plays (see: Nick Evans). When I pick a guy who always plays, he sits.
Two days in a row. Sunday I picked Magglio Ordonez. Today I picked Ian Kinsler.
This usually never happens to me. Back to back days! My streak holds at one.
My homer streak broke again as well, although I'm faring better with Survivor.

So 4 of the top 5 Survivor picks lost. Twins, Angels, Tigers, Diamondbacks. About 33-35% of people won. The rest lost.
The leaderboard was nuked. It was loaded with active streaks. Now there are just two. The top 8 all took the Twins, like me.

You got my attention and I'll probably finish with a decent number of hits. But, like everyone else, I was done in by Homer Bailey's no-hitter against McCutchen and the Pirates.
Pedroia going 0-1 and leaving the game didn't help either.
