This thread is for discussion of the 2006 RIBC season.
I'll set up the usual standings tracking program. It's not ready yet, but hopefully before the end of the night. |

Here is the standings page: http://rotoguru1.com/base/RIBC.html
You can also get there from the league icon on the blurb page.
I haven't yet tested the split standings. Your team name at Yahoo is the basis upon which standings splits are compared and calculated, so please do not change your team name during the season.

I'm SOOOOOOOO glad I decided to start Millwood and Lieber.
I think the only good thing that'll come out of starting them is that they're not going to be using up a lot of innings.

blue hen - I found your Morneau rationale, so that's all set.
mMoses - you are deliquent on rationales from round 18 on. That's part of the commitment for playing in this league! For the sake of completeness, and in fairness to the other managers, I expect you to honor that commitment.
everybody else - thanks for following through on the rationales.

Sweet. I wonder what else is in these so-called "archives." I have to write a followup on the 2003 Tigers one of these days.
Not a bad first day, with good outing from Olly and The Gambler. Looks like my pitching might not suck after all.
I put in a few trade offers, so I hope you guys accept them all.

I had Cabrera (round 20) for that 6 run swill. How terrible does it feel when someone you only have taking space on your team for his ERA and WHIP completely blows up like that. Kind of nice to have it on the first day of the year though. It's like, Oh Yeah, fantasy baseball! Ups and Downs.

I finally got off the SB schnyde this afternoon. IRod of all people. Woo Hoo!
Right now half of us have ERA's of 5.00 or worse. For me personnaly, four of my starters (Peavy, Lowe, Duke, Byrd) have ERA's 6.50 or worse after one week of action. Thankfully I left Colon on the bench for his start against the Yankees, and am going to do the same with Chacin in Fenway tomorrow. Fortunately, all 4 of my drafted and active RP (Turnbow, Linebrink, Calero, D.Sanchez) all have ERA's of 0.00.
It is so early.

Can't say I have much interest in a healthy Sabathia, let alone an injured one.
Some interesting developments today - Putz with another save. Maybe they'll just give him the job. Also, Brandon Watson sent down. Glad I saw it and got Church in time. Now let's just hope he hits.
A pretty strong day all around, with another homer from Giambi and 3 hits from Castillo. Even though Olly got shelled, it looks like I'll finish the day just ahead of both Mach and Chris, an accomplishment I'm proud of.

Both of Putz saves were situations where he came in the 8th inning for a hold, and stayed on the mound for the ninth only because his team added to the lead making it more than 3 runs. Still, they count.
My team settling into 14th place (16th yesterday) is real deflating after being so pumped up for this RIBC season. But luckily it is only 2 weeks into the season and the three guys underperforming on my team so far are my first 3 picks (Manny, Peavy, Aramis) who will likely turn things around. At least that is what I am telling myself.

Small question about the waiver system:
I picked up, and then dropped later in the day (due to a better player becoming available) Brandon Medders.
Now...as far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong), but shouldn't this player that had just been dropped from my team go into the Waiver Pool and not the FA Pool?
It's not a Major issue... but I'd just like to have it clarified.
I wouldn't have noticed this glitch if another manager hadn't snapped up the player in question today, and I believe waivers take 2 days to clear.

I'f a player is dropped the same day that he was picked up, he's put back in the FA pool. He has to be on your roster until the next day before he's dumped to the Waiver Wire.

I've seen some articles regarding how hr/g is up a bit this year but I don't think HR's tell the whole story. the offensive jump is really noticable in this league because we use SLG and OBP.
look at our team OBP's and SLG's, then go look at year by year stats of a player like Dave Winfield (a hall-of-famer).
we us a pretty high % of MLB players in this league, and our team averages rival those of dave winfield. actually, over half our teams %'s are better than Winfield's.
whether it's juiced balls, puny stadiums, HGH/roids, whatever, it's hard to give a lot of credibility to these stats that current hitters are cranking out. it's like looking at college stats.

With the first trade accepted, this is a good time to clarify the timing of trade processing.
Our league rule is to allow 24 hours for managers to protest a trade. Protests are done via email to me. If 4 managers submit a protest within 24 hours, then all managers are surveyed for a vote over the next 24 hours.
In this instance, the trade appears to have been accepted by the two parties on Saturday morning. As of now, the 24 hours have passed with no protests. As such, the trade will be approved.
The issue then is when to process it. If I allow the system to do it automatically, it will not happen until Monday, meaning that the players won't be available to the new teams until Tuesday. In fact, if you look at the Yahoo trade page, it states that the players will first be available on Tuesday.
However, as Commish, I can force the trade through today. If there were any protests, we would need to wait until tomorrow, but since there were none, I could push the button today, making the traded players available to the new teams on Monday.
My inclination is to process the trade on the announced schedule (trade proceses on Monday, players available on Tuesday), since this corresponds with the Yahoo notice, and since this is all that managers could count on in advance (without knowing whether any protest vote may be required). However, if no league-wide vote is required and both managers request processing a day earlier than that, I am willing to do so.
So, in this specific instance, if the two trading managers would like me to process the trade today so that players are available on Monday, please post here. The only manager who is really impacted is CEHP, since the players he gives up play on Monday, while the ones he receives do not. Therefore, if CEHP wants this trade processed today, he needs to let me know by tonight.
In the future, early processing of a trade will depend on the request of both managers.
Sound like a plan?

FYI - For those interested in proposing a trade... I'm looking for a deal looking like:
From IAC: 1xOF, 1xSP For: 1xIF, 1xRP
I believe I've already offered to BH, Kaf, Guru, Hubble... so far to no success. :( So I'll play it patient for a bit and wait for your offers instead. All legitimate offers will be considered.

I was comparing today's league stats with stats from last year. 12,632 at bats this year compared to 13,040 last year, so maybe a few more days played last year, but we can do some math. 2053 runs and 1949 rbis this year compared to 1876 and 1788 respectively last year. That is 177 more runs and 161 more rbis this year with 408 less at bats. 2505 IP this year compared to 2630 last year. 1917 K's, 154 wins, and 133 saves this year. 1970 K's, 165 wins, and 126 saves last year. 125 less innings this year, 11 less wins, 7 more saves, and 53 less K's. The following data below shows how many at bats or IP were required to achieve one of each category. | This Year | 6.15 | 6.48 | 54.45 | 16.27 | 18.83 | 1.31 | | R | RBI | SB | W | SV | K | Last Year | 6.95 | 7.29 | 53.22 | 15.94 | 20.87 | 1.34 | | | | | | | |

Certainly not counting my chickens, but after tonights games: sitting in 1st with a 38 point lead, followed by six teams within 8.5 points of one another.
The competition's fierce... but not for first right now. I was expecting SANFORDORS, and JumpBalls' teams to step up and compete, but both have struggled over the last few days. It's obviously too early to tell, but I think this is the biggest differentials I've ever seen in the RIBC or one of the qualifiers.

BTW, my team is not participating in the hitting explosion this year. Fortunately, it's also not participating in the pitching implosion.
I do expect my hitting to pick up. And I also expect my pitching to revert to the mean.
I had planned all along to keep Doug Davis on the bench in April. So far, so good, as he's winless with a 7.66 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP. I'm not sure I have the cahones to put him in the lineup starting May 1, however.

I was mainly trying to get a rise outa yall... and maybe a little bit of determination... this is got to be one of the calmest group of managers I've seen to date.
I'm not complaining... If you've still got confidence in those players you drafted... all the power to you.

I think that 38 point lead is very impressive in such a competitive league. Top 3 in 8 of 10 categories. I don't think it's likely that everyone of your hitters continue to bat so well, but you are off to a great start.
Guru- stick to the plan. Besides, how much fun will the season really be unless you start someone and watch them give up 6 or 7 runs in one inning. I think KKB, Chris, and even Hubble will back me on this. LOADS of fun.

I have to agree. Watching 3 pitchers account for more runs than my entire offense did on their "big night" was awesome! I'm hoping I can watch it happen again sometime soon.
;)
By the way, IAC, it's not just WAY too early to take much out of the standings, it's WAY WAY WAY too early. :)

I thought it might be interesting to take a look at the K9 #s of our league so far, as some managers who have quite a strong grip on this aren't using up much of their IP yet.

My power hitting (slugging) has been woeful this year, and there isn't any single culprit. I just looked up my preseason projections, and five hitters are currently slugging more than 100 points below projections: Bay, Sexson, Peralta, B. Giles, Loretta. Sexson is the biggest disappointment, slugging only .364.

Wow that is an important date for me in the season... i have SLG over .400!!!!
i'm still .031 points behind the closest guy in OBP though... how shamefull :(
If with these -46 IP i could get some W without destroying my WHIP and ERA, i could gain some more ground and join the middle of the pack, what a relief that would be after this dreadfull start.
As for my SLG and OBP, i'm afraid nothing can be done but praying. Once again, i'm open to all offers, and plz don't be offended by the trade offers i sent out there, i'm just throwing ideas and expect couter-offers. Now that Sabathia is back i'll have extra SP.
And just a thought: You guys certainly saw the "trading block" utility in yahoo. Would be nice to see people use it this way we could see what to offer that would have more chances to be accepted.

KKB [125] - The thing with those 11 points, is you gained yesterday 5.5 of that alone for 2 wins. That can go just as quickly because we are so bunched. Nine of the 16 of us right now have either 15, 16, or 17 wins.
That being said, another sign it is early. Both my team OBP and SLG each jumped .008 in a single day yesterday. There is still hope for some daily movement in the placings there. Moving up 4 placements in those categories may take a week in the months to come. (Hubble [124] there is still OBP/SLG hope).

holt sends A-Rod to MC&TB for Damon and Otsuka.
trade rationale: I only have 18 SB (5 pts) and 5 SV (2 pts). A-Rod is the only player on my team with the value to allow me to address both problems at one time.
now I just gotta pray that Otsuka keeps his job and Damon keeps stealing bases. no guts, no glory.

well, I looked over every team for SB/SV combos. you'd be surprised by how few teams can really offer a closer and a base stealer. and of the teams that can offer both (not that they would), there's usually an issue with the base stealer (like horrible OPS) or the closer (horrible ERA, low saves, no job security).
I like the way damon is playing this year, and I'm confident that otsuka will keep the closer job. maybe I coulda done better, but I dunno. trading for closers in this league is like pulling teeth from a live crocodile.

IAC - I better hold on trading eiter of my SS's for now. I don't want to downgrade myself in SB's.
i'll start using the trade block thing. I mean, technically everyone on my team is available, but if they are on the block they are very available. hopefully this will help facilitate easy minor trades.

Trip, what are you looking for? Let me know and I'll see if I can work something up.
That said, the current proposal is WAY off from what I would accept. I'm not going to give up 26 R, 22 RBI, about .020 OBP, and about .145 SLG just to get 3 SB. Particularly from one of the easiest positions to find Free Agents and even more particulary since I'm in the upper half in SB.
I'm willing to deal, but it's going to have to be a lot closer than that.

The RIBC travels of Paul Byrd.
JeffG: Drafted 19.07. 9.2IP 1W 5K 10.24ERA 1.97WHIP. Dropped 4/12
MC & TB: picked up on waivers 4/16. 10IP 1W 5K 8.10ERA 1.30WHIP. Dropped 4/22.
holt: picked up on waivers 5/5. 7IP 0W 0K 3.86ERA 1.57WHIP. Dropped 5/9.
blue hen: Picked up on waivers 5/15.
I guess the good news for his fellow "bird" blue hen, is Byrd does slightly better at each stop.

I didn't want to drop Westbrook, but since I have 5 guys on the DL I didn't really have a choice. If he didn't implode in his last start vs. KC I might have found someone else to drop in his place.
7 of my first 14 draft picks have made it to the DL...read that again. I drafted my team young hoping to avoid this situation.

I have been reading the AROD trade veto thread, as I'm sure many of you have, and it occurred to me I am not certain of the process of trade approval in this league. I presume it is a league-wide review since that was how the last 2 trades made in here were handled. How many "veto" votes does it take to nix a trade?
Is democracy really necessary for trade vetos in a league where Guru is the Comissioner? I suppose it feels fair to have a vote. But even if the Commish was the sole arbiter, I'm sure he'd request opinions, or at least listen to unsolicited thoughts.
Anyway, it probably won't ever come up in RIBC for obvious reasons (integrity). It just seems a little undesirable to me to have a renegade contingent of 6 managers whipping each other into a frenzy and then vetoing a trade. My orientation is very laissez faire, however, with regard to trading.

Meanwhile, in the bottom quarter of the league...
What a great birthday! I finally convince Twarpy and JKaye to make it to my party, and drunkenness was had by all. And suddenly, my team learned how to hit. All the Twins finally paid off, as they scored 16 runs, including 4 for 5 with a homer by Mauer. And Atkins and Putz leave on a good note - a homer and a save on the way out.
Now, it's time to move on. Crawford's not in the lineup today, so I put Bernie Williams in. Will he play tonight? Also, I watched the end of the Seattle game last night. Putz looked very good. Should I have kept him? Livan got through the first inning relatively unscathed again Baltimore. Let's see how it progresses.

But not a bad day today otherwise - great start from Livan Hernandez and another save for Tyler Walker.

Happy belated birthday blue hen. We'll see if my fantasy team can do just as well for me on my birthday in late August.
In 'chasing saves' news, in a pseudo-desparation move for those elusive saves, I used my waiver priority to pick up Elmer Dessens off waivers. Yes, he's the 10-31 Royals flavor-of-the-week 'officially declared closer' for now. Hopefully it is good for some saves.

We cut Dessens about 12 hours before news broke that he was the new closer. 5 or 6 of our hitters suddenly got the yellow and red box telling us of their injury woes and we needed another OF. I was kicking myself for a bit after the news broke and thought about putting in a waiver claim, but we decied to just roll with it.

His team is just so great, I guess.
Last year, in AAA, I had the 16th pick in the draft, and used my #1 priority on... Ambiorix Burgos. One win and one save (and a month) later, I dropped him. Dessens is fine, but wasn't about to waste my spot.
In other news, Reitsma (not McBride) got the save last night, and Guardado got one as well (because Putz has been so busy). And Jenks got a win. Interesting night in the closer business.

I think I had a 6 or 7 waiver priority which I used for Dessens. So most of you bypassed the Royals current closer which is understandable with the higher waiver spots. At the rate the Royals win games, he is likely to see as many calls as the 'Maytag repairman'.

I noticed a few weeks ago that I still had my draft roster intact, and that every other team has now made at least 6 moves.
I do find it surprising that none of my draft picks have been so lousy to make me want to punt. Actually, Burnitz has sent me to the F/A list several times, but I never found someone that I thought would be better long term, and I figured that Burnitz would snap out of it. (He actually has done better lately.) Sexson is another one of my major disappointments, but I'm certainly not about to dump him (or trade him at a low point).
I'm sure it will happen. Eventually.

Guru, I have had that happen before--in football. I have such a keen desire to find sleepers that I often will not dump a guy until 3 or 4 weeks into an NFL season for fear that "this is the week" he will bust out.
It's a sign of a good draft, but it can also hamstring you when it's time to dump someone for that real gem on the F/A list. Not that I'm saying you wouldn't recognize when it's that time.
But when your team is full of Markakis's and Duffy's it makes the choice hella-easy. Heh.

Ah, the "Maytag Repairman" joke. Never gets old. I think it's more likely that MacDougal comes back and gets the job, although it'd be nice for the Royals if Dessens could have a couple good weeks and get traded. I was all set to pick up Dessens, although it might have meant dropping Cotts, and I'm not totally certain Dessens is going to be better.
This game really is about chips. J.J. Putz had plenty of value as a closer, but now I have used the fact that's he's become a solid commodity to get a good hitter. Taking waiver claim players, and turning them into better players is a great way to win. Now, about Jonathan Papelbon...

My quick rational...
I felt I had a surplus of OF with Winn or Matthews regularily on my bench, and with Baldeli coming off the DL soon, it was going to get silly. Thus I felt I could afford to drop a couple high OPS OFs.
Barmes has pretty much been a huge disappointment to date, so I felt I should pick up a SS to cover for him until maybe he turns it arround. Also, I felt I had a lot of uncertainty (who doesn't) with my relievers, so F-Rod seemed like a great grab to extra-solidify Saves... P.Wilson was just gravy... a hold and see guy.

By looking at Hubble's current team and where he needs help, I don't think it takes much thought to see why he is making this trade. He just got a heck of a lot better in runs and rbis along with significant improvement in his hitting percentages. Coffey and Camp could/should both earn the full time closer roles and he still has Dempster for saves.

Well, given your evaluation of the deal, it's probably safe to say you wouldn't have made it from Hubble's point of view.
Anyway, TB and I have decided that we will trade Casey Blake, if someone feels they need him and if they can put together a nice, equitable deal for him. I would like a RP myself, a closer in particular, but I think we'd be willing to negotiate for some other package if it can help us.

I agree that given the draft position of each player, it doesnt take much analysis to say i got rob. The problem is that it's is not draft day anymore and i have specific needs to adress. I have considerable (is that englsih word?) ground to make in 3 offensive category. I got a whopping 4 points in those 3 cats combined (R=1, OBP=1 and SLG=2). To get player that could helped me, i had to give away something right? Well i chose to get rid of Young and K-Rod, both terrific player that i draft every year. All for the want of a few extra saves! Elmer's two appearances since I grabbed him off waivers:
Tue 5/23 - 0.1 IP, 81.00 ERA, 12.00 WHIP Thu 5/25 - 0.2 IP, 54.00 ERA, 6.00 WHIP
(and the Royals next stop on the current losing streak North American tour is they go to Yankee Staduim this weekend)
I went from rankings of 11.0 and 11.5 in the ERA and WHIP column, now I am 7.5 and 7.5, and have temporarily dropped from 8th place to 12th. Of course a few others on my staff helped contribute to this drop as well.
The desire to move up one or two placements in the saves category has so far cost me 7.5 points. Of course we are so tightly grouped it can turn again quick, and I know Dessens is at least a little better than his last few outings.

I'm not sure I understand the timing of Yahoo's automated trade processing.
Our league settings are for a 1 day protest period. However, in practice, trades have generally not been automatically processed until 2 days have elapsed (unless the Commish manually pushes them through.)
I got the email notice for this most recent trade at 2:40am 5/24. I did not push it through after 24 hours, but it was automatically processed by Yahoo at 6:17am on 5/25.
My guess is that, because Yahoo seems to be configured on Pacific time, the trade actually went through at 11:40pm 5/23. Automatic trade processing took place after one complete calendar day had elapsed.

What a difference 12 days makes. On May 17th (post 175), I hit rock bottom. I was 10 points out of 15th place. Since that time, I have the best overall roto total, and I am at 11 or higher in all categories except WHIP (10), and RBI (5). I also have the best change in rankings, with 18, ten points higher than Hubble, who is second in that category. All that has brought me into a tie for 9th place, which would be a great accomplishment considering where I was.
And it gets better. Crawford might be the hottest hitter in baseball. Olly seems to finally be turning his season around. El Duque looks to be recovering some of his past magic. And Gagne is due back in less than a week.
Just like post 175 started this turnaround, this post will probably jinx me. But it's much nicer to be in this position that in the previous one.

I don't normally start pitchers against each other, but I figured I'd start both Lieber and O'Connor today since it would be difficult for my pitchers to do any worse than they have been doing these past few days.
Well, it got worse...
PHILADELPHIA PITCHER JON LIEBER LEFT THE GAME IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SECOND INNING WITH A LEFT GROIN INJURY.
WASHINGTON PITCHER MICHAEL O'CONNOR LEFT THE GAME WITH A RIGHT SHIN INJURY IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH INNING AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A BATTED BALL.
Ugh!

Next year I am voting for 10 DL slots.
This is getting freaking ridiculous...
Player - Round Derrek Lee - 2 Sean Casey - 11 Brian Roberts - 5 Aubrey Huff - 7 David DeJesus - 14 Xavier Nady - 20 Ben Sheets - 3 John Patterson - 10 Fernando Cabrera - 18 Cole Hamels - (#2 Waiver Priority)
No one else is allowed to complain about injuries...ever. Michael O'Connor & Jon Lieber... please.
If anyone wants to give me a servicable hitter for Cole Hamels...he's yours!

Hey, it's the risks you take. My #3 and #4 haven't played all year, and my #1 spent a few weeks on the DL.
Of course, I could still use a third baseman (and perhaps an outfielder).

Gagne, Prior and Helton are/were well known injury risks.
Sheets is/was the only established injury risk on my original squad. Huff and Casey were moderate risks at best. There is a difference.

You're telling me Huff and Casey were less injury risks than Helton?
And Brian Roberts? Hamels? Nady? Do you follow baseball?
Injuries suck. And yes, it's unfortunate. But if everyone thought Prior was going to be healthy, do you think I would have gotten him in the 4th round?

I missed Roberts...he was a known risk. Nady's appendix...not known. I guess I thought injuries were the cause of Helton's poor showing last year. Hamels also a known risk, but I thought I'd get more than 1 game from him before a DL stint.

[201] - I went two full months with the same roster. Then, since midnight June 1, I've already made two moves.
I don't know if Jered Weaver will work out or not, but Justin Speier wasn't logging enough innings to make much of a difference, so I didn't have to give up anyone valuable for the trial.
Wily Mo was a handy guy to have around while Burnitz was slumping and Crisp was out. But now that Crisp is back, he would have been of limited value even if healthy.

I had the #2 waiver priority, but I passed on Jered Weaver (looks like I'm not the only one). I really don't have a lot of confidence that he will step in and contribute for very long. He's below Cole Hamels (the healthy version), and I have a feeling I will want to save the waiver priority for later.

Wow, what a streak. Now up to 88 points, 10 points ahead of 8th place. I was a little worried that starting Cabrera against my 5 Twins might not be a good idea. 6 innings, 0 ER, a win, and the Twins did some good - 3 times on base for Morneau and Kubel, 4 for Mauer.
And I picked up David Bell today. Is he the answer?

As a previous owner, I can say, "No." ;)
You moved... 23 R, 21 RBI, 0 SB, .304 OBP, .385 SLG
...for...
22 R, 24 RBI, 0 SB, .336 OBP, .387 SLG
It's a decent OBP move, but that's really it. Given that you already have the lead in OBP, I don't see how this can be the move that is the "answer." In all honesty, I don't see why you didn't stick with Batista for the SB potential, given that SB are your biggest hitter need. Beyond that, you need your pitchers to start racking up the Ks, so again, Bell doesn't help there either.
So again, "No."

Nice, KKB. But I think Bell is better than Batista, plain and simple. Batista is about to lose his job, by the way.
Watching that Cabrera game was a great experience. Do you guys ever try to acquire players from different teams so you have varied interest in games? For example, I don't have any Blue Jays on any team, and I find myself skipping out on their boxscore. But for the two weeks I had Aaron Hill, I was following them more closely. Anyone have a similar experience?

Seems like a team can indeed survive without a third baseman. I've always thought David Bell was underrated.
And everyone knew Chan Ho Park was a good pickup, right? And to think, I almost benched Jason Kubel.
This is one of the luckiest streaks I've ever had in any league. Every move seems to be working out (except Gagne, of course). Overcoming zero production from the first four picks.

Haha. My loss - I should have jumped at the Gagne deal.
Hubble and everyone else, I'm still looking to deal a 1B - Helton, Thomas, Giambi, or Morneau. Your best bets are probably Helton or Giambi. Looking for stud 1B (must be a star), and a great starter or good reliever. Can also give you some of my pitching or outfield depth.

Trade announcement...
I give: Pierre-Blalock-Wiggington-Schmidt
BH gives: Helton-Kinsler-Guardado-Ethier
We don't wish to process the trade right away...

I think you can process it right now without affecting anything. You got Schmidt's start.
Figure I'll give some rationale, since these were pretty interesting discussions.
Basically, every matched up pretty well, and I knew I would be trading with Hubble. I had 4 1B's, and only three slots. Injuries to Helton and Thomas have hidden that problem a bit, but it's a serious waste. Helton has a lot of value and was obviously my best chip (Though I will certainly offer up Giambi for your first rounder).
Once I knew I was going to lose Helton, I looked at my weaknesses. With Crawford, I have made up a lot of ground in steals. The addition of Pierre could put me up in the elite. I've been quite well in OBP and slugging so I'm not terrible concerned about what I might lose in those categories to gain in runs and steals.
Poor Hubble had Eric Chavez and Hank Blalock. Ever since I traded Atkins away to get Crawford, I've needed a third baseman. David Bell has been pretty solid, but I wanted one of the superstars. Lucky Hubble, and lucky me.
With recent and recurring injuries to Mark Prior and Eric Gagne, I realized I might need some pitching. I knew Schmidt was expendable, but with Pierre and Blalock already in the deal, I would need to give up something else. Enter late round pick Ian Kinsler. Despite some injury troubles, Kinsler has been great this year. If I was going to give up Kinsler, I'd need someone back. Brandon Phillips might be too much. But alas! Hubble has been playing Ty Wigginton at first. And he is eligible at Kinsler's MI slot! Wonder of wonders! So Wigginton was added and we had a deal.

Might as well give my rationales too:
Everyone knows i was looking for both a 1B and SS that would help me out in both OBP and SLG. I made many offers, received some... And settled with this one. Helton-Kinsler-Guardado-Ethier for Pierre-Blalock-Schmidt-Wiggington.
I need to up my OBP by 0.30 and my SLG by 0.45 if i want to qualify in the top 6. So OPS was of main importance to me.
What i give: Pierre: He could score 50 runs in the 2nd half of season and might steal another 30sb. But his OPS wont be higher than 750. I just needed to get rid of that. Real happy of # he gave me since Lee is back, he was red hot... gave him some value. Nobody wanted him 3 weeks ago.
When i drafted Blalock, i knew i would trade him on ASB. I had him for last 3 years on my team. He just collapses after ASB and didn't want that to happen on my team (if he doesnt, good for BH!). Career Pre-ASB# 0.847 OPS Career Post-ASB# 0.740 OPS. I just couldn't afford that. Also with a real 1B on my team, Blalock would have been on the bench, so it was a question of getting the most value possible.
What about Schmidt? Well it sure does suck to see him go. He is a good post-asb performer last year he really got all his stuff back and it is an awesome add-on for BH's team since i'm pretty sure he'll be real solid again this year. I consider he was good value for a 5th round pick and could easily could have gotten me 5 Wins more if SF offense wouldn't suck that much. But no trades are free and certainly not for Helton coming from BH.
Wiggington... not much to say. Picked him of waiver... gave me 40 RBI while hurting my OPS... good riddance. Almost dropped him 12 times...
What i get: Helton: Monster post-asb career# including last 2 years. If some1 can help me in OPS it's him. Obviously key player of the trade.
Kinsler: I know not much of him, except this: he plays SS, in TEXAS and has 0.943 OPS so far. Even if he goes a full .100 less he is going to help me more than any of my SS did so far.
Guardado: Yeah, yeah... he took Coffey's spot. Might turn out good. Might suck real bad. He is happy, CIN's player are happy, CIN's fan are happy... heck that could be 15 saves right there...
A. Ethier: He will be a fill-in until Rios comes back from DL and if he keeps playing like that he might just not go on F/A ... Only good reports on him right now. Might be fighting for ROY.
Overall: I know i give 3 big names and receive only 1. So name-wise i might look like i'm loosing here. But i actually like to think this is a very constructive trade for both team since it perfectly covered our respective weeknesses; statistics and position. Now, if the player i get can stay out of DL (unlike my last trade) i have all reason to be optimistic. We're only half way and i havent given up.

I didn't know there was trouble in Wyoming at all. I guess there is. Just go accept my trade offer first.
Hubble, you need a third baseman? I'll give you David Bell for Carlos Beltran. Or Todd Helton.
Everyone else, I'd like to see if there's any interest in Kevin Mench. He has a lot of power, so I think that would have some value. With the addition of Pierre, I now have a lot of outfielders, so Mench might bring something back. I'm looking for a decent closer or middle infielder. Might also be able to package one of my SPs (not Prior or Schmidt or Cabrera).

Heh, I guess they're actually teammates in real life.
At the All-Star parade last week in Pittsburgh, Jason Schmidt shared a truck with David Eckstein, presumably in an effort to get to know his new RIBC teammate a little better.
This was a terrible fantasy weekend. In addition to Guardado's 3 saves, I benched Benson vs Tex but played Cabrera. Guess who did better? Then I figure El Duque vs CHC and Livan vs Pit are two easy wins. Guess again! And to top it off, last night I put Gathright on the bench in favor of Mench, who took the day off. And Gathright gets 4 RBIs! That's Joey Gathright, and that's 4 RBIs. I didn't believe it either.
Well, at least Pierre stole two bases last night.

I log in to see that our starting pitcher gives up 5 runs in 4 innings (10ish era) and is allowing more than two baserunners per inning and am not phased by it anymore. I am numb to poor pitching performances this year. It's not like we can do worse than a 1 in those categories. I am hopeful that it gets drastically better, but it would take a month of great pitching to get me excited about those categories again.

MC/TB and blue hen - I'm giving you a run for the ERA/WHIP basement. The way my ERA and WHIP dropped in the last week, I'll be battling you for the '1' and '2' scores before you know it.
Just yesterday alone I went from '5' to '3' in both (Turnbow/D.Sanchez/Lowe), and dropped 6.5 total points to take over 15th place in the overall - I was as high as 9th a week ago. Nowhere to go but up now.
Although ERA and WHIP always seem to corrolate somewhat, I do not think I have ever seen a league's standings where those categories from top to bottom rank almost identically as they do today.

Interesting fight in 1st place, I_A_C and Holt are directly fighting 3 points (not counting Runs since Holt leads by 72).
K's : 799-801 in favor of Holt WHIP: 1.27-1.28 in favor of I_A_C RBI: 778-771 in favor of I_A_C
So far tonigh IAC takes 1.5 pts in RBI and .5 in WHIP and takes the lead.. it will be interesting to watch as the season draws to an end... every decision counts!

I was browsing through the F/A list the other day, shopping for a pitching win. I narrowed the choice to Byrd, Loaiza, Trachsel, and Rodrigo Lopez. I ended up opting for Lopez (against hitherto winless rookie Garza). At least it wasn't Byrd (although only 3 of his 9 runs were earned)!
Still hurts to see Loaiza pitch a shutout, and Trachsel pick up a win as well.

Got Wandy Rodriguez going tonight. Wandy should go 8 strong with 12 K's, including Chris Duffy four times (save it up Duff - I just picked you up today). Then Wheeler comes in for the 9th and strikes out the side for the save.

The deadline to complete trades in this league is Sunday, Aug 27.
I've got plenty of players available to deal (including Mastny who just got his 2nd save :). I don't want any junk players, obviously. if their ratios are worse than .350, .450, 4.00, 1.30, then I'm probably not interested.
I'd especially be interested in a 2 for 1 deal. i give 2 solid players, you give 1 player that upgrades my team somewhere.

Been a pretty good week. Rogers with another great start tonight. I actually went to Shea last night and witnessed Olly's meltdown firsthand. He walked the pitcher! But seriously, Olly held em hitless through four and looked VERY good doing it. It was pretty surreal cheering for Olly against my favorite team. Seems like the result was bad as can be- Phils lose, and my favorite player gets bombed and doesn't win.
I was just looking at the RIBC pre-draft thread. Seems like the top 6 plus Guru will go on to next year. Since Guru is doing so well, that means I only have to finish 7th to stick around. And here I am sitting in 8th place. Should be interesting.

Who is fourth, JeffG? That's right.
Here's my statline: 4 7.5 15 13 1 14 11 16 13 5
First in K's and last in SLG. Interesting. Somewhere near the start of the month, I was a 16 in SLG, for the season. How the mighty have fallen.
Tonight didn't get me many points, but some nice pitching nonetheless- Rogers and Anibal do even better than last time, and Gil Meche was the right spot starter. Now let's imagine I had drafted Steve Trachsel where I drafted Oliver Perez. Or Chien Ming Wang where I drafted Mark Prior. Or Ryan Dempster where I drafted Eric Gagne. Would it be a different world with Trachsel, Wang, and Dempster?

I almost picked up Gil Meche for the spot start but didn't like his road split or something. It was between him, Padilla, Hensley or Runny Hernandez. Looks like I had a 50% chance to choose right and missed. Runny and Meche had nice games. Hensley and Padilla both had turds. I did snag Shields and Hill a couple days ago when cleaning out the trash and they had nice games today. Of course, a little too late for us in the big picture, but might as well have a little fun till the end.

Forget hen, I'm focused on Guru! ;)
My Saves will take a hit in the short-term, but I'm hoping Rivera and Izzy come back so that I don't suffer too much in that department. I'm also hoping my pitching stays on track and can lower my ERA/WHIP some more and negate any losses in Saves. Mostly, I'm hoping my hitting moves of late will help out my RBI and SLG because that's where I'm really hurting. Realistically, though, Saves can cost me about 3-4 points pretty quickly if Rivera and Izzy are done for the season.
Still, I gotta be hopeful. Nice standings since 09/01...

Copied from the preseason thread:2007 RIBC (16 teams) Top 6 from 2006 RIBC Top 3 from each AAA league (6) Winner of each AA (3) Guru
2007 AAA leagues (32 teams) Non-returning 9 from 2006 RIBC Teams ranked 4-8 in each AAA (10) Teams ranked 2-5 in each AA (12)
That produces only 31 AAA teams, so that leaves one to play with, plus openings due to attrition. Chances are that the 6th place AA teams would get to advance, and maybe more.
I always reserve the right to adjust, based on the actual standings, behavior issues, etc. But I think that general framework is a good guide.

Yeah, but there's still quite a bit of baseball to play. 4-8 is only separated by 13 points. The way points have been moving around lately, it's not a terrible longshot.
Also, in standings since 09/01, Mach (4th) is 7th, Sanfordors (5th) is 8th, and Guru (6th) is 12th. You (7th) are 2nd and I (8th) am 4th. That bodes well for our quest! Keep the dream alive! ;)

Yesterday was exciting in one of my other leagues. It's a head-to-head league and it came down to Bobby Abreu. If he went 0 for 5, I'd have lost. If he went 0 for 4, I'd have won. He actually got a hit, so I moved on. All day, I was calculating how much I needed and got it right at the end.

KKB - Don't set aside a place in your shrine for that 8th place ribbon yet! I pulled within 1/2 a point this morning, and I think StatTracker even had me ahead for a little while late last night. I guess I just need to throw myself a bone once in a while. I have not had too much excitement in this league since my mid-season jump from 14th to 6th to 12th in about a 2-3 week span. 10-12 is where I pretty much lingered since, that is, until Sepember hit. My team is having a real good week and finally created some separation from the 9th-15th tightly grouped place pack I was recently among.
Maybe we can get all the MLB teams to play another month so I can catch up more ;)

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Fantasy Sports.
I apologize for any inconvenience you've experienced with your StatTracker. We have received emails stating that Roto leagues are showing 0's through the games in the standings. We here have repeatedly logged into the leagues that have emailed with the issue and not once have we been able to replicate the 0's. We do, however, see 0's in the overall league standings. That is completely normal. This late in the season, the overall standings will not be fluctuating much if at all on a day to day basis. Our engineers have looked over this issue as well and not once has there been an issue with 0's appearing where and when they shouldn't. We have tested the application on different computers, while logged in as different users, at different times and have yet to see any issue with StatTracker outside of the normal league tracking.
While we apologize for any inconvenience you may be having, the issues are not Yahoo! related. We are more than happy to troubleshoot with you, such as clearing cache/cookies and reinstalling java, but it is possible that the application could also be hampered by antivirus applications, firewalls, even the internet service provider's cache system. Regardless, after continued research we have not found the issue to be on Yahoo!'s end. There will be no "fix" as there is nothing to fix. Again, StatTracker is working normally, there is no issue to be further researched.
As stated in the Yahoo! terms of service,
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/baseball/baseball-48.html
It is not possible to cancel or refund part of your premium product purchase. There is a one-time charge for each add-on product you purchase in Fantasy Baseball ($9.99 for StatTracker™; $9.99 for the Draft Kit; $14.99 for the Scouting Report). This charge will be billed to the credit card you provide during purchase and is not refundable.
Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care.

bh - From time to time of late, I get the same symptom that you have reported with StatTracker. Yahoo! is wrong in one regard - IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF NO CATEGORY MOVEMENT. I usually delete the StatTracker window and re-launch or leave it up a few minutes and the numbers eventually pop up. I've seen it both using Explorer and Firefox. I do not make any changes to the firewalls, Java, cookies or cache when it eventually works.

You may have seen this thread. You also might have noticed that I picked up 5 starters for Sunday. I realized that I can gain some serious ground in wins and strikeouts (and hold off from losing some serious ground) so I am attempting to max out my innings. Here's hoping it ends well for all of you (unless you're in direct competition with me, of course).

bh you bum! I am in direct competition with you in K's and wins with similar innings left available on Sunday, but now with barely no one left to pick up. Your move will likely give you 40 innings over the max and could help you jump ahead of me in W and keep me from passing you in K's. Those two points you 'stole' from me could more likely help KKB stay ahead of me for 8th and 9th more than it would help you gain or lose you 7th position. I hope it damages your WHIP ;)

I noticed that, JeffG, and then I saw your post in the other thread. I am not familiar with any "gentleman's agreement" in RIBC. In fact, I am hoping to use this strategy to make a move up, perhaps passing Guru or Mach. Hopefully this isn't seen as "sinister" therefore booting me from the league forever like what happened when I tried to have Tim Brown as a keeper in a different sport.
If you ask real nicely, perhaps I can drop Jake Woods for you. Oh, and I better be getting a nice fruit basket from someone named Kafenatid...

Has anyone noticed Stattracker not updating league points in real-time anymore? I used to be able to go in and see my points for today, but not anymore. Am I the only one having this problem?
What I have noticed is that early in the evening the stat tracker works for me, however, late in the night as the games are ending, the stat tracker doesn't show the daily league points, it just shows 0's. The stats for my players seems to be working, (although sometimes it freezes and quits updating, which I assume to be a stat feed problem), just not the column showing the relative movement for all the teams (the 'scoreboard' tab of the left side green bordered part). I have also found that sometimes I have to launch stat tracker twice just to get it to load at all.

Okay, I know we really sucked this year, but thought we might try to finish the season with a bang, which we did, but it was the wrong kind of bang. I've been watching our innings and decided about a week ago that we would load up on guys pitching today and try to get 30-50 extra innings as discussed a couple posts above. It's been a pain with pitcher starts changing daily, but we managed to get 8 starters going today. I didn't add up the numbers, but it's pretty ugly. It's not like our ERA or WHIP were a concern, but it does epitomize our pitching this season. Okay, had to peek and at a quick count it looks like 23.1 innings and 31 earned runs. Suffice it to say that I don't have much to say in a final recap other than congrats to those on top, see some of you in AAA next year, and hope to be back the following year. I promise we will draft smarter next year.

I will give more detail in a closing recap, but I have to say that this is one of my best managed seasons ever. I pulled off two blockbuster deals that dramatically changed the face of my team, and I did quite well in the closer chase (after Gagne), even if I did trade away two key closers.
I managed my innings perfectly, and didn't fall too far behind in offense (even finished off 1B). Helton might not have been the greatest first-round pick ever, but he did give me a hefty leg up in OBP and I did manage to trade him, for a lot and at the right time. Gagne and Prior, on the other hand...

By the way blue hen, your loading up of starters today did allow you to pick up some extra ground on W and K, but you dropped 2 places in ERA.
Congrats to Holt for winning our league very convincingly, and nice job for all of you who earned your place back in this league next year. For the rest of us, I'll look forward to seeing most of you again in AAA.
Thanks also to Guru for those great RIBC league tracking tools and especially for opening the invite to those of us who qualified from the other leagues.

Well, I've won one month every year I was in RIBC (at least I know I did so last year and THINK I did the first go around), so this year was no different... except that it won't keep me in RIBC. :(
Oh well, just have to fight my way back in!

Nice finish. Man, KKB really scared me at the end. Who knew Jake Woods would save my season?
First and foremost - congrats to Holt. You really steamrolled us this year. Your spot in the Hall of Fame is well deserved.
Thank you very much to Trip and Hubble for giving me Carl Crawford, Juan Pierre, Jason Schmidt, Hank Blalock, and Ty Wigginton. Couldn't have done it without those guys.
Thanks to Mach and Chris for giving me a home field advantage in RIBC.
Thanks to Jeff for picking Bobby Jenks for me while I was in Vegas.
Thanks to a special young lady for having gone to high school with Joe Mauer, causing me to pick him well ahead of his time. Oh yeah, and thanks to her for putting up with all my shenanigans - picking up Dan Kolb while we were at a broadway play, stopping at a Kinkos to activate Scott Spiezio, and watching endless Twins (and other) games this season. She rocks.
Thanks to J for trading me Giambi last year, ensuring I would move up to the Majors.
And mostly, thanks to Guru for this wonderful set of leagues. It's an honor to play, and even more of an honor to play well. You made very few moves this season, drafted a lot of Indians, and beat a slew of great managers (and mMoses). Good work!
