Subject: RIBC 2007: Regular Season Discussion #1

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Sun, Apr 01, 2007, 14:52

We'll use this thread for RIBC discussion during the regular season.

I'm working on the usual standings page, which should be available sometime tomorrow.

Please don't change your team name once the season starts. The RIBC standings program will calculate standings over any range of dates, but requires that all team names remain constant. If you want to rename your team, do it now.

I'm bummed that Hermanson draft pick turned out to be a flop. New it was a risk but I didn't think he would get cut from the team. ouch.

Also not thrilled with Rogers getting hurt either. Not off to a good start.

The Geddy Lee commercials are great. There are a few versions on YouTube, including a long (1:30) version. My favorite part is Carlos Lee.

Looks like Team Blue Hen is off to a great start! Eckstein with three hits! Not quite like 2004 when Giambi's homer at 5 AM put me in first place in the first inning of the first game of the first season of RIBC. I still have the screenshot.

Good luck to the rest of you this year - there are five more spots you can take.

Normally you wouldn't think an injury to Guzman would have a lot of impact, but this certainly isn't going to help Guru's gamble that Lopez would quickly earn 2B eligibility now that Lopez shifts back to SS for a while.

During a draft I make sure to draft back up players and try to cover as many positions as I can in case of injury and off-days. I always wonder though whether actually playing the backup on an off-day hurts or helps your stats in the long run. Is it worth starting Feliz, Punto, Wily Mo just because they are playing and a slot is open? Sure they might get hot on that day, but I wonder what their net effect for a whole year is? For now I'm starting them, but so far they have hurt.

LOL

think a lot it depends on the opposing SP. I kept erstad benched today because of the matchup, he went 0-4.

seems like most of wily mo's starts should be good matchups for him. kinda wish he had lasted a little longer in the draft.

I'm hoping my season isn't defined by what A-Rod did last night. Bases loaded and the chance to break out and he pops up. When drafting him #2 overall I was counting on him knocking those runs in. Hopefully that is just a small blip on a great season for him.

holt, I'm using the latest version of Firefox with no problems. Have you changed anything recently? If you're running any add-ons, you can disable them under Tools > Add-ons and see if that helps at all.

By the way, Java and JavaScript are completely different, so updating Java won't help at all. Just an FYI before you bang your head trying to update Java to fix things some more.

Guru is in last place. That's bad. What's worse is that he's in last place by a lot. 15th place (KKB) is closer to 8th place than he is to Guru. Ouch.

Similarly, Team Blue Hen is in 6th place, but closer to 1st than to 7th.

Maybe it's time to make a move, Guru?

2004 standings

For any prior season, the standings URL on any date uses this format:

So, for example, the standings on April 20, 2006 (which reflects games through April 19) is here:

Regarding all historic RIBC seasons (Majors and the qualifying leagues).

I just noticed there is a new commisioner feature in Yahoo Fantasy Baseball called EDIT LEAGUE HISTORY. If Guru want to set it up, for each year, it will allow him to select all related RIBC leagues from past seasons. When completed there will be an "ALL TIME" tab under standings.

Now you could see all the RIBC leagues history in one place.

I really can't figure out how Yahoo adds a player. I used to think they were added to the database once when they first make the MLB, but that theory has been blown out of the water this season (Lincecum, LaRoche, etc...) Does it have to do with players being on the 40 man roster?

I matter too much in this league, but it's very frustrating in my keeper league. I wish they'd have a consistent policy.

Figures,... now that Lopez finally gets his 2B eligibility, I clear out a SS.

This was a tough decision for me (Guillen for Papelbon.) Guillen has possibly been my best hitter. But I finally decided that Papelbon would help me significantly in the save cat, somewhat in the ratios, and maybe a little on Ks. Will I lose that much by replacing Guillen with some combo of Biggio/German/Lopez? Probably not. And I really need the rest of my hitters to pick up the pace, in any event.

Guru - hopefully Papelbon and Guillen work out for both of us. any time you want to process the trade is fine by me.

I planned to keep 3 closers another month or two to build more points in that category, but my hand was forced due to several of my hitters slumping. I've got to make up ground in OBP and SLG. If I can hold my ground in saves with Saito and Hoffman I should still do well in that category, and Guillen should give me a boost in several categories by season's end.

just looking at the box scores today, and I see Marcum is pulled from the game while he has a no-hitter through 6 innings (pitch count only 78!).

anyone know what is up with that? I don't have Marcum on my team or anything. it just seems wrong to deny someone a shot at a no hitter.

btw, Frasor came in and promptly coughed up a long ball, putting Toronto down 1-0.

Interesting trade. I'm not sure I would have given up 4.5 months of Ichiro for a closer. However, players that depend on speed for much of their value can become ineffective quite suddenly. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Good luck to you both.

I hope I don't regret not picking up Guardado this morning. I have a couple guys on the DL already and was having trouble justifying another one. Just went to check on him again and of course Holt already got him, which could make losing Papelbon a bit less painful down the road for him.

haha - I had initially put in a waiver claim on him, but then I figured there was a good chance he'd slip through so I cancelled it. probably foolish but it worked out and I got him anyway. if he turns out to be a serviceable closer then it will be a lot easier for me to trade for a good SP.

I send J.D. Drew and Kaz Matsui to Filthy for Jered Weaver.

I'm way short on IP's and need improvement in w's, k's, and ratios. I'm sitting better than expected in steals so Matsui is expendable. I've got some depth in the OF and I expect my overall offensive production to improve so I think parting with Drew is something my team can absorb (true he's been slumping but by season's end his numbers will look good, in my opinion). now hopefully Weaver lives up to my expectations.

Nice one Serb. I guess you have a right to take a shot at me, since my comment might have been about Joe Crede or Adam LaRoche. Were those the mashers you were talking about?

All kidding aside, you don't seem to have a full pitching staff. Let's talk.

Man, rough day today. I did manage a .390 OBP with 9 runs and 9 RBIs, but it could have been even more. With the ATL/BOS game rained out yesterday, I benched Big Papi (5/8 on base today) and Chipper (4/9 today with 8 total bases). I was so hung over from last night that I couldn't log in to set them back in the lineup. So that's 9 times on base on my bench. Plus Edmonds with two hits and a walk, but I don't really have a spot for him.

All in all, I gained a point and still have a headache.

Looking at the draft results as we are 1/4 done in the season.

Just some of the glaring ones, I'm sure there are alot of other steals and busts in the draft.

STEALS OF THE DRAFT

*Stats based on ranking of 25th or higher in Yahoo Ranks and drafted later than the 10th round*

Torri Hunter Drafted by Tosh 150th Pick overall

5th overall in the Yahoo Ranks

Magglio Ordonez Drafted by JTSERB Pick 177

4th overall in the Yahoo Ranks

Josh Beckett Drafted by StlCards Pick 186

Brandon Phillips Drafted by Building 7 Pick 152

Currently Ranked 24 in Yahoo Ranks

DRAFT BUSTS

* Drafted in top 2 rounds and not ranked in the top 75 *

Albert Pujols drafted by Philly Phan 2nd Overall

Bobby Abreu Drafted by Kafinated.net 4th Overall

Chris Carpenter Drafted by Kafenatid.net 29th Overall

Currently Ranked 374 In Yahoo Ranks

Jason Bay Drafted by Blue Hen 30st Overall

Currently Ranked 108 in Yahoo Ranks

When I was looking these up I couldn't believe how many guys drafted in the top 2 round are not living up to their respective draft status.

13 out of 32 or 41% have been busts

Team with most busts based on rankings

Peter N (2)
Bulding 7 (2)
Sanforders (2)
Kafinated.net (2)
Philly Phan (1)
Filthy RIBC (1)
Flying Polack (1)
Oaktown A's (1)
Blue Hen (1)

Steals were in a little more in line than what I expected. Like I said im sure there were much much, but I didnt have the time to look at them all.

6 or 24% out of the top 25 ranked player were drafted with pick 150 or later

Some of the players always had the potential, but prior injuries (Magglio) (Beckett) have hurt their draft position, but Torri Hunter ranked 5 is just insane!

Anyway these number mean nothing and will not show who will win of course just thought it was fun to look at.

Keep up the good work everyone been a great league.

Yahoo's rankings are based on their standard categories, and not on our league cats. So, for eaxmple, OBP and SLG aren't factored into hitter rankings.

I know it can be done because of a league I was in last year. Basically what it prevents is someone taking a player and dropping him just to keep an opponent from being able to get him on that day, especially for pitchers.

You're right, I never knew of this rule:

All players dropped from a team's roster are immediately placed on waivers. During this waiver period—two days in Public Leagues and anywhere from zero to seven days in Custom Leagues—anyone in the league can claim the player except for the manager who dropped the player.

(Please note that a player added and dropped on the same day will remain a free agent. If a player is signed as a free agent and dropped that same day, he will not be subject to waivers.)

Anyone need good starting pitching? I'm looking to acquire a 3B, CI, or closer. Available pitchers are -

Roy Oswalt - 6 wins, 3.44 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 71 Ks
Andy Pettite - 4 wins (Wow. 4 wins from a Yankee ace?), 2.93 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 50 Ks
Aaron Harang - 7 wins, 3.88 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 90 Ks
Ian Snell - 6 wins, 2.63 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 78 Ks
James Shields - 6 wins, 3.30 ERA, .97 WHIP, 85 Ks
Yovani Gallardo - Gallardo is an elite talent and a must-get in all leagues. He's one of those 'next big thing' types. (via CBS)

I was assuming one of my 5 drafted SPs would miss a bit of injury time, but they all look great so far, so I find myself a little bit ahead of pace for IP. But not so far ahead that I need to short-change myself. I just picked up Gallardo, and maybe a team a bit behind in IP would like to acquire Gallardo + another.

I am far enough behind in OBP that I don't think I will be able to make up any ground. So I am looking for 3B/CI that provides the other four categories (runs, RBIs, Steals, SLG%). Or a closer.

about time for a shakeup, looks like dempster to the dl too so now at least i dont have to stress about having just 1 fragile closer with no backup....initially wanted to counter the trade but the more i looked at our teams, that was about as fair as it could get, and the more i looked at pena the more i seemed to want him on my team. that should be the end of ryan klesko if anyone cares...

also, if anyone has noticed, andruw jones is driving me insane and i would love for someone to take him off of my hands, maybe someone else has a player that is making them crazy??

I'd really like to find a way to get someone other than Marcus Giles in my MI spot. his .661 OPS isn't going to cut it. I think he and Nomar must have been drinking the same well water. anyway, if someone has an MI they'd like to move, I might be interested.

... and back down where I belong in 11th. Castillo finishes with seven times on base, four runs, and his 13th RBI of the season. Bartlett did well, but finished with .417 slugging on the day. Not so great. Oh well.

I had Morneau on my TSN team... not! I'd been contemplating going Howard -> Morneau for the Philly off day and Minny DH, but didn't pull the trigger despite 7 HT. Damn.

Midseason Self Evaluation:
8th place and getting healthy. For the most part I have been pretty bad, my draft was again awful, but I have also managed to get pretty lucky on some pickups which has allowed me to stay afloat. I am starting to really like my team and feel good about making a 2nd half run. I will either rise or fall with the Jays and I am fine with that, they are about to go on an Oakland-esque second half tear.

My allstars:
-Justin Morneau, as advertised and got lucky on his injury.
-Placido Polanco, had to trade but he is a hitting machine and served me very well.
-JJ Hardy, cooled off but what a start.
-Alexis Rios, he does it all.
-Gagne/Dempster, I've gotten about 20 more saves out of them than expected.

Disappointments:
-Halladay/Felix, i guess they've done good, but not ace good.
-Andruw Jones, wake up!
-Corey Patterson, does better after i drop him, naturally.
-Anthony Reyes/Andy Marte, flop, flop.

Some nice pickups
-Doumit, really saved the day for a while.
-Willits, traded but he addressed 2 glaring holes for a nice chunk of time.
-Reed Johnson, glad i didnt wait too long.
-McGowan, so nasty with growing confidence.
-Marcum, nice numbers, no run support.
-Otsuka/Matsui, 2 players i wish i had drafted, but i got them now is all that really matters.
-Carlos Pena, no signs of slowing down.

Plus a few good spot starts and a couple short term injury fill-ins.

If a couple of my sleeping giants wake up, I can stay healthy and the Jays go on their run, then look out ahead.

That's a pretty big trade between Bags and Serb.

I'm looking to get some pop out of my corner infield slot - and willing to sacrifice some OBP. So in addition to the currently-injured Mora, I can offer a middle infielder, an outfielder, or a closer (besides K-Rod). Let me know what you're thinking.

I felt I had to make a move... I feel I have a chance to win this league and I upgraded big time at 2nb from Iguchi - Utley, Guerrero to Matthews isnt a huge drop off as it seems becasue of the SB from matthews...I also never really played Harris and he was basically an overpriced backup and felt i need to get something for him. if Dotel can ge me some saves I think ill be in good shape.

What does everyone think of the deal?

without looking at your team needs, just evaluating the players exchanged, I think you came out way ahead in that deal.
utley > guerrero
matthews > harris
dotel > pedroia

that's based on me not believing that Harris and Pedroia can maintain their %'s. I can understand Bags making the move though. when your team is struggling you wanna do what you can to shake things up and find something that works.

Belliard has started 1 at 1B and 4 at 3B, therefore, he is CI eligible.

Looking to move a closer, anyone but K-Rod. With K-Rod, Wickman, and Corpas, and Alfonseca holding on, and Broxton getting chances, and Rauch looking sharp, this has become a position of strength. Would offer up Wickman for a power-hitting first baseman (with SLG well over .450 preferably). Or lets work something else out.

Also willing to part with Luis Castillo, who might be an upgrade for your middle infield.

Made a deal with Serb.

Varitek and Lilly were probably my two best draft picks, and I'm sad to see them go. But Webb is just too much - well worth it, to be sure.

Millar also fills a need, if you believe that.

I feel Lilly will get more wins for the rest of the year than Webb with the cubs cookie cutter schedule the rest of the year 6 extra wins moves me up 5 points. close category. I will lose in SO without webb, but Lilly's whip is considerablly better then webbs this year

Millar was expendable with Laroche playing better as of late so losing him doesnt really hurt.

Varitek has .60 better OBP the Kenji that should help me stay at the top of the OBP cat

That goes for anyone else. I have 7 outfielders and only 5 spots. It's a good chance for you to get Luis Gonzalez, Justin Upton, Jeremy Hermida, Vernon Wells, Moises Alou or Willy Taveras on the cheap. Peter N., on it's surface, I don't see much problem with it. Tosh is clearly trading for Ws and is willing to pay for them. Filthy RIBC gets Ks, which he's in need of and Tosh has a surplus of.

When you consider that the 4 W difference in the 2 pitchers would (to this point in the season) give Tosh an extra 2.5 points, it seems worth adding in Fields for him.

Seems fine to me.

I personally think Shields isn't far behind Halladay fantasy wise. He will provide me with some helpful K's even if he bombs. Looking at projected opponents for both pitchers, I think that Shields will even help me in WHIP for the rest of the season compared to Halladay. He's managed to do better than Halladay so far, pitching in the same division.

To make up for the fact that Halladay has the stuff to dominate down the stretch, I get a third baseman in the deal as well. Even better, one with a starting job. The best third baseman I've had all season has been Maicer Izturis, and that won't last with Kendrick coming back. There is really nothing of value in the free agent pool at third either. I can only put up with Andy Phillips for so long. Fields is a player I targeted because of his position in a potentially dangerous lineup. He has been seeing pitches batting before Thome and Konerko and I think that will last. His numbers in the minors were good and hopefully he is just starting to get comfortable.

Moves like that can define a season. I had the same first reaction when I saw the trade, but a quick look made it very easy to see why it happened. Personally, I don't have as much faith in either Shields or Fields (was that on purpose? rhyming names?) but I can certainly understand it. I'd have give you Melvin Mora if you'd asked.

Much like Seattle Mariner management, I often have a hard time benching a regular player for someone playing better. Thusly ... Adrian Beltre continued to start at 3B for me, while Josh Fields mostly sat on my bench (but has been playing some DH during his recent hot streak). I feel good about sending the kid somewhere with a chance to play.

I am certainly trying to get more 'W's with Halladay, and maybe Filthy will be wrong, and I'll get better WHIP as well.

Not to mention my fans were clamoring for a change since we can't seem to catch StLCards. At the very least, I should sell a few more tickets.

I'm not gonna lie, rhyming names wasn't on purpose but did get noticed. Also, I've had Mora and definitely didn't want him back. Outside of the top tier of 3rd basemen, Fields is one of the most appealing to me.

Halladay is gonna be on the road against some tough teams down the stretch. If anyone can shut them down it is him, but the Jays need to start hitting and Doc has to start pitching better on the road for that to happen. Noone wants that to happen more than me, but if its on someone elses team at the expense of getting a starting 3rd baseman and still keeping a pretty talented bunch of starters, I will take my chances.

Who ever has Corey Patterson and now Aubrey Huff would probably also thank me for waiting just before they figured it out to release them. God I hate the Orioles. Probably gonna be the ones to kill the Jays slim playoff hopes this year too. For now, I'm scared to drop Hernandez cause he'd probably go off, but starting next year the Orioles are blacklisted...meaning they'll probably become the best offense in the league.

Well if like most of us you're bored by Blue Hen's bantering lets talk about somehting more prevalent, like RIBC rules.

How many teams in the majors stay in the majors? Go to AAA? Go to AA?

How many teams in AA and AAA move up and so on?

Nothing set in stone. However, the following guidelines should probably hold:

Highly likely to get an invite to RIBC:
Top 5 RIBC teams
Top 3 in each AAA league (6)
Winner of each AA league (2)

This list comprises 13 teams. Assuming I'm not in the top 5 of the RIBC (unlikely at this point), that leaves only 2 openings, which would be selected from the following 4 candidates:

Teams finishing 6-7 in RIBC
Teams finishing 4th in each AAA

Final determination will consider factors such as closeness of standings in each league, feedback from Commissioners as to any behavioral concerns, and manager attrition.

This year, we ended up with 7 returning teams from the prior season's RIBC (incl. me), plus 3 from each AAA, plus 3 AA winners.

I would be willing to trade one of my closers (F. Cordero, Accardo, Issringhausen).

I seek a hitter (not looking for a catcher) that will improve my SLG% (currently at .449), but won't lose me my valuable 2 points in OBP.

I have interest in trading for a starting pitcher. Prefer a one for one deal where I give up Glaus(SS,3B eligibility) for somebody, although I am open to other ideas as well. Doesn't have to be a stud, just someone that will help with K's, ERA, whip.

I see it, Holt. Definitely not a flash in the pan, but I think you're going to need a little more than that. He doesn't have enough power, and doesn't help me out at my weak positions.

I am also headed down a few other avenues. If you can add a little more to that deal, we might make it work.

I'm not that desperate. Pretty sure I can find a pitcher for him straight up somewhere else.

Nice that Gabbard picked up a win for me. Not real hard when you get 30 runs to back you up.

anyone interested in picking up a good closer (Saito)? I'd be interested in just about anything, SP or hitter.

let me know if you have some interest. i don't want to go around making random offers.

Coming down to the wire with the trade deadline. Really looking for a serious slugger. Especially a middle infield one.

Alright, I guess J.J. Hardy isn't a serious slugger, but he does have 23 home runs and has picked up the pace in August.

Manny Corpas is pretty great, but I think he's bound to give some of it back, especially since he pitches home games in Colorado. Hardy fills a need, and I think it's worth it at this point.

I wonder if he'd have taken Bob Wickman for Hardy...

move out of the way guys. I'm shooting for at least 6th place. I lost some roto points yesterday but it was just one of those roto anomalies. my team is still making progress.

oh yeah. Guru, any chance you got a recording of your capella group at that AA game?

The live recording at the stadium didn't turn out well, but we did pre-record it earlier in the day: National Anthem

My trade on August 16 has not worked out as planned for me. The stats are -

Roy Halladay - 5 starts, 42.2 IP, 0-2 record, 24 Ks, 3.59 ERA, 1.34 WHIP

James Shields - 5 starts, 36.1 IP, 3-0 record, 31 Ks, 2.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP

If I had kept Shields, I would have an extra 3.5 points in the wins and Ks categories, and perhaps 1-2 more in the %s. And with those points, I would not feel so danged crowded from SANFORDERS right now. Stop pushing your way through the line Dave! You're harshing my mellow. :-)

neither one of the starters I traded for really worked out for me. marcum has been wretched.

Marcum 30.1 3 0 21 6.82 1.78
Weaver 100.0 7 0 63 4.14 1.39

Quick, somebody do an analysis of Webb vs Lilly.

Just kidding - I'm very happy that worked out, although Varitek has been pretty good...

Guru: post 227:

How about climbing the ranks from AA to AAA? Would it be slots 2-6 in AA get the AAA call next year?

In general I really like Yahoo, but now that football has started it seems they aren't paying ANY attention to baseball. There are quite a few sept callups that are getting playing time but still haven't been added to the database.

As big as yahoo is, you'd think that someone on their payroll would have the responsibility of doing this. They suck at it?

[245] - AA teams finishing 2-8 (top half) will probably get to move up to AAA next year, if my arithmetic is correct.

In Yahoo's defense, the companies that seem like they have a million employees for stuff like this, often do not. Which players were you talking about?

There are people being added but certainly some that have been overlooked for whatever reason. I see an obvious one that has been overlooked. I think you can request players be added, I just have never tried it.

i better not mention the players just yet. i did notify yahoo but the only result of that was a form letter style email from them.

This has certainly been a long season and it's not getting over any too soon. Over the past few weeks none of my guys seem to be able to get on base and their slg % has been bad as well. Hopefully they can all find their swing today and start off the weekend on a positive note.

It's a little hard to feel sorry for someone with a 13 point lead and only 3 days left ;)

Even the Mets would be safe with that much of a cushion.....

Great season, StLCards.

Ditto that, Cards. It's been fun having you and Dave R in both RIBC and TSN. Looks like you guys got me in here, but I think I'm in good shape in TSN. Dave R does have a lot of pitcher trades and knows what to do with them.

I wish you could sort TSN by month, or half-season. I bet Dave R has the #1 WWR since the ASB.

Wow, it looks like the NL World Series team will be either: Phillies, Rockies, Padres, Diamondbacks, or Cubs. Wow. Go Rockies (so the Phils don't have to face Peavy in game 1.

Here were my prop bets:
DBacks over 79
Brewers over 82
White Sox under 87
Indians over 85
Tigers under 88
Angels under 90
Yankees under 97

5-1-1. Not bad.

Jeez. How in the world can I lose 7 points in the last two days? My pitching (ERA,WHIP) just collapsed the last week.

congrats StLCards and to everyone who qualified to try again next year.

I tried everything I could to at least get back to 6th place. Just couldn't put together the starting pitching to get it done, though I think I got reasonably close considering how far behind I was early-mid June.

Keeping dogs like Garciaparra and Giles around too long sure didn't help either. I really felt I had a powerhouse lineup after the AS break but the competition was too fierce, and the hole I dug was too deep.

As always, thanks to Guru for running this great league.
