I have Holliday for 2 out of 3 nights and get -10 pts. Debacle. Oh and thanks to the Red Sox for scoring late and winning - yeah, but not getting Schill and Beckett wins - boo.

He is the top YTD point producer at catcher, but VMart has the same pts/game avg, at a slightly lower price. And Martin only ranks #8 in total points (for catchers) over the last 15 days, and #4 in per-game average over the past week. So he doesn't look to me like a "gots to have" option.

(Of course, if you rely solely on RotoHog's stats capabilities, it's difficult to see alot of this!)

It's kind of disappointing that Cust is still listed on San Diego, after I sent a message about it 2 days ago. Fortunately, SD and Oakland have had similar schedules and freeze times, so it hasn't mattered lately, but it's still a significant gaffe with potentially messy repercussions.

I also notified them about 5 other players who were listed on the wrong teams (all traded players, but some dating back to opening day). Evidently, they have no automated mechanism to control for this.

What are the merits to adjusting all the teams to "on pace" versus pro-rating to 1300 IP (using the same averages)?

Pro-rating while assuming an average over a significant number innings would at least a significant number of IP that are in the books. You're already pro-rating the RHP for anyone who is "under pace" on IP. Why not pro-rate averyone to the max?

As a mathemetician I am simply curious. This is in no way a criticism. I enjoy the data provided for what it is and understand the pitfalls as they are.

using what averages?

I think prorating to "on-pace" using a SP average makes the most sense, as teams that are under pace are probably going to need to catch-up using starters, and those who are ahead of pace probably did so on the backs of starters.

It also allows us to finesse the whole question of forecasting an average pts/IP for relievers. To the extent that teams have done better or worse than average, that's already reflected in their current total, but not explicitly assumed to persist.

The averages currently used to make the adjustments. I forget the exact numbers Bandos has been using (per IP for pitchers and per G for hitters)>

Your second point makes sense. It does allow for the differentiation between the 2 pitching categories.

Ender - If you use the same averages, then wouldn't the standings end up exactly the same?

If you project everyone to the max IP using identical averages, then every team's projected points are higher by a constant amount (vs. the table above). Nothing gained.

Geez, I keep slipping in your rankings Bandos - out of the top 10 now.

I'm trying to preach mean reversion to myself, but I keep going against it.

Held Reyes for his 2 straight 0-fer's and dropped him in favor of Hardy yesterday - -27 point swing.

Holliday has averaged approx. 10 p/g for his last 6 games but for the 4/6 i've held him i've averaged negative points - pretty neat feat this one.

Atleast I have kept VMart at C for most of the last 10 days, i've held Utley everyday for about 2 weeks, and I dropped Pujols a week back and haven't looked back. Unfortunately, i've found it far too difficult to remain consistent with these types of positive moves.

All of the above not withstanding, I suppose the most disturbing stat for me is my 1 save over the last 4 days (19 chances) - Yikes!

Guru, I don't project forward from the adjusted standings. In that case you would of course be correct. Nothing would change.

I meant from the standings as they are on RH. You correctly pointed out above the flaw in that method. I would certainly hope that my composite RHP/IP average (SP + RP) would be much higher than the 4.8 RHP/IP average that Bandos has been using.

I think that answers your question Alex. I have at the very least satisfied my own curiosity. I posed the question at the end of my planning period without having had time to consider all the factors.

I looked at a standings sheet I created several days ago and nearly all of the top 10 or so in my adjusted ranking are currently in the top 100 list that's being used.

After that though I would guess it's about half the teams that are in the top 100 and half that aren't. And don't forget that even my "expanded" standings don't include more than probably half the teams.

Just wanted to make sure ppl were aware so it's not disappointing later. 20th might actually equal 30th-40th.

Nice to be back on the list.
Just need to see if I can keep things going and get there from here.

Wasn't happy with who I played yesterday, but was going to be gone and didn't want to lose money on the players not playing today since I wouldn't be there to sell them.

Let's see if I can't keep this week going.

StL - it's not just THAT! The opposing pitcher for the Nats always seems to blow away the offense of the pitcher you start! They've done it to me so many times I skipped Smoltz today.

BTW - did I miss the memo about CRAZY post game freeze price changes?? Okay I have been caught off guard recently on players' off days....but today with Vlad and Utley for example, WTF is up with their prices?!??

I need last at bat HRs from a few guys to salvage any sembelance of a good day.

I give up trying to chose between Reyes and Hardy based on matchups. Whoever I chose pulls an 0'fer and the other puts up a double figure performance. I should chose one in my head and then play the other . . . somehow I have a feeling that would not work either.

Peavy is sitting a few pennies away from his all-time high.

The only thing working against a sell-out is the startling array of alternatives on 5/16 - Webb, Lackey, Hill, Sabathia, & Hamels.

I'm not taking any chances. I just bought him and i'm going to let him sit there until game time.

Hardy and Reyes both did pretty well last night. I haven't had Hardy all year. I just can't believe it! Since I've had Reyes most of the time (occasionally playing Rollins or Hanley if the matchup dictates), so I don't feel like I've lost too too much.

I'm staying away from Hudson today, so he should be a good pick-up. I'm going with 6 closers today and Peavy tomorrow. I think Hudson is a solid pitcher, but I'm really going to start focussing on true aces (aka pitchers with a lot of strike-out potential) rather than good pitchers who have had a run of good starts. Luck evens out.

I want to know if Endangered Species is a computer hacker. ...... I want to know how ES could accumulate nearly 4800 points and have -27 innings. And, most importantly, I'd like to know who the beautiful lady holding the golf club in ES' profile is. Elliott

lol - thanks JMan. I will respond to that. I'm mildly surprised Elliott (team name "Custodians") isn't wise enough to figure it out. He has disposed a fair amount of good advice to a lot of global board posters.....

....responding to a comment I think you had made earlier in the month about this board and community (that being - you were surprised how many of us talk on the phone, or have met). Guru started his sight around 1998/1999 based upon his interest in the old Smallworld.com game (now tsn/The Sporting News).

Many of us have played that game during that entire time, and when he started the message board - somewhere around 2000/2001 (?) it only got better. Certain guys you just seem to have the same thought process, or are in the same leagues, or whatever, you just get to know and graduate from the board to email, email to calling on the phone, to hooking up when you're in town. It's a pretty cool community and I've met lots of great people along the way. If I traveled more I'm sure there are a dozen or more people I'd be comfortable meeting.

OMG, I didn't realize the site was that young. I found it in the summer of '98 Man how time flies. I started playing CNN/SW in '96. Sitting out 3 years and playing again this year for the first time brings back a lot of memores. I actually like TSN a lot better now than what I did when I left 3 years ago.

I am staying away from Felix. I really like Escobar tonight but haven't decided if I'm going to use him or not yet.

I remember Smallworld 1998. I came in 3rd or 5th, I think. Anyways, I recall the rotoguru site had valuable information that was not on the smallworld site. I can't remember what it was though now. I don't think it was ownership numbers , but it was rankings in categories or the ability to sort categories. Perhaps someone remembers.
The price updates were erratic and you never really knew for sure exactly when/if player prices would be updated. Now it's done in real time.

Street on DL

Huston Street-R-Athletics May. 15 - 5:52 pm et

Athletics placed RHP Huston Street on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 13, with an irritation in his right ulnar nerve.
It was thought that an A's reliever might go on the DL today, but there was no indication it'd be Street. Under normal circumstances, Justin Duchscherer would fill in as the team's closer. However, he might be day-to-day for the foreseeable future because of his hip. Kiko Calero is likely next in line for save opportunities, though he's been a disappointment so far this year. Alan Embree could also be an option when lefties are due up in the ninth. Duchscherer is probably the best bet of the group at the moment.

But I was considering the move to Escobar in TSN and I researched the crap out of it and decided that Accardo was the better grab and that I was going to stay away from him in Hog too. Even though I have not had one correct SP pick against the Nats this year, I went ahead and took Hudson instead. OMG!!! I hope my luck is changing and this is the start of something good!

I wasn't charged with any GP or IP for last night's games. I assume everyone is in the same boat.

Yesterday, I wasn't charged with a GP at several hitting positions, but not all. And my IP were properly incremented. But it's obvious that something is not working correctly this week.

And Jack Cust is still on San Diego.

If I missed something shame on me, but why are the hitters in the doubleheader spiking in price?

I thought it was only the pitchers who could get credit (points counted) for appearing in both games.

Pops - Hitters get credit for both too...but it counts as 2 games. For people who are behind pace on games played (like me), that's pretty valuable. Also, I think some people are buying speculatively, based on how prices spiked last time the Yankees had a DH.

If you're behind in GP, it's a reasonable way to help get caught up.

For relievers, it's a way to get an extra chance at a save opp.

For those of you who had Hudson last night - you're welcome.

I'm trying another slightly unorthodox pick today, going with Varitek as my C and V-Mart as my 1B. Don't like the other 1B matchups and Variteck is 10/16 with 3 HR in his career against Maroth. Last time I skipped one of my unorthodox matchup picks was Branyan against Kip Wells and Branyan hit 2 HR. Of course, before that I picked up Uribe against someone and he did nothing...

Has it ever been 100% confirmed as to the treatment of roster freezes for double headers? i.e. - if I sell a player on the White Sox today at the freeze of their first game, is he automatically frozen in my lineup for the second game as well?!?

Species,
Think the real thing to remember, is that it is the slot that locks.
So, once you sell after the freeze, that slot is no longer available.
And the player is in it, so the only way it could be done, is to have him for both games.

Really weird patterns for sell offs today.
Ugh.

Ditto what Guru said about Cust.
I just emailed them again asking if I would get points for him on Thurs since the db shows him on San Diego, who does not play Thurs, but Oakland does.

Maybe that will prod them to fix it so they don't have to do all the manual corrections later.

I was watching, and Jenks was ready to come in. The announcers surmised that Ozzie decided to see if he could preserve Jenks, given the 2-run lead. If a runner had gotten on base, Jenks probably would have come in, but with a 2 run lead and a 1-2-3 inning, Jenks was spared.

I love the matchup for my Detroit players against Tavarez, but I also have to accept the results against Schilling?

So I was trying to edit my lineups to get who I really wanted in teh right spots and the edit lineup function is down again. What a crock. There are so many things wrong with the site. They need some major QC and they are so busy that some basic things are being overlooked that are hurting the game. This edit lineup being down is major, but not what I'm referring to obviously.

I totally forgot about the early start time. Thankfully, I had very few of the Bos/Det players (Varitek, Paps, T Jones) so my value didn't take too big of a hit.

I'm at about $760. I haven't cracked $800 yet, but have been over $790 (I think) and down to $720 or so over the past few weeks. I haven't been overly attentive on weekends and tend to lose $40 or more, only to slowly gain it back during the week. I'm particularly bad at selling guys who have off-days on Mon or Thurs and have lost a lot of value that way. My other money loser is starting a pitcher with a game time of 4:05 PST. I usually get home just after the freeze and get hit with a $$ loss. Not that it matters too much at this point.

Worst case scenario he appears as a pinch hitter and strikes out, costing me a game and points, while Hardy or Hanley have 20+ days.

Re 100:

I couldn't do that either.

I tried to sell him for about 3 mins and then I tried to bench him about 45 secs. before the freeze.

I suppose I could have just taken last night's injury notes more seriously or staked out the pregame box a little earlier. Seems like quite a bit to do to compensate for a fundamental feature of the site being down.

As it is, I don't anticipate 15-20 points making a difference for me one way or the other. However, if it happens to be the case, I've got several dozen poor player moves to blame before I begin to blame anything else.

Re: 101, Cust

The CEO emailed me back and said he had no idea and he was getting it changed immediately.

So, now I guess I need to figure out if I want to start Cust or C. Lee.

Decisions, Decisions.

VMart paying off finally.

I dropped C Lee yesterday, fearing the Revenge of the Lincecum.

Got tied up in a meeting, so my choice was made for me.
C Lee it is, unless I come up with a better option.
At least VMart finally made it worth me having him on my team.

Guess I could go C Lee > Pence :)
And a save from Paps.

Nice to have a day like this finally.

4 Saves so far, and still have Paps one more time and Reyes if they play.

Been awhile and sure needed this from the number side.

Kazmir's line through 4 innings is once in a decade type stuff.

Only 3 runs allowed, 2 ER, 9 K's, 6 BB's, on 109 pitches!

Today was the first day all month (and actually a lot longer) that I didn't have ARod or Vlad in my lineup. ARod did something little but Vladdy is killing tonight in his first two ABs. I benched him for Cust. Go figure. I benched ARod for Wright. Yeah that worked out well. At least he was positive in his one AB.
