To start us off, I give you this piece of American history.........something to which I hold dear, as some of my closest Gurupie friends and I seemed to become buddies over this:

Any thoughts on today's pitcher options? Haren against Bedard should be a good matchup, both have been pitching great. I think I'm going with Haren as my only starter today. He's been consistently excellent and his numbers aren't screaming "fluke". Plus I like him matching up against Baltimore better then Bedard matching up against Oakland (not that I have a good reason). Cain is another option I strongly considered. He seems in line for a complete game 1-hitter, but since his last few starts have been a bit rocky and his K/BB ratio hasn't been too impressive this year, I think I'll just go with Haren.

I'm trying to get more picking about my SPs right now to avoid catastrophe!

Wow...Felix's price is getting absolutely crushed today (down $3). Am I the only one who is actually planning to use him? Seems like there must have been a lot of speculative buying by people who think he's too risky coming off an injury.

Papelbon is up to $82+. Seems like he must he getting close to selling out.

Magglio is at $73+, his peak price of the season, but is not out at the moment.

Wish I could include (easily) more teams outside the top 100 and drop those teams who are at +600 in IP.

The last two days have renewed my faith that I might get to 7 p/g for hitters as some unconventional choices have paid off. Still, I decided to drop Martin after his -4.4, and get Vmart who has been very good, but Martin was GREAT. Lost 20 pts there. Sure is nice when you pick up a spot start and get a HR (thanks Adam!)

I wonder where the legit shot line is at this point almost 1/3 of the way done? -500 points, -1000 pts?

It's a long season.

Species is cheating by not using SP lately! While the rest of us have been getting crushed, he sits idly by and waits until pitches remember how to, um, what's the word? Oh yeah, pitch!

My hitting has been horrific. Every time I make an unconventional pick (Green and Andruw last night) based on matchups, they don't do anything. My studs (outside of Utley and VMart) haven't been doing much either. Tough couple weeks for my hitters. Plus, my RV has dropped like a rock (though I have managed to rebound to $725, which will probably be $675 early next week).

Hitter: 5.70 (May); 6.73 (total)
SP: 5.14 (May); 4.56 (Total)
RP: 15.53 (May, 55.0 IP); 15.66 (Total, 113.3 IP)
Total P: 7.99

Kind of surprised by my May SP numbers, given bombings by Penny and Arroyo. Guess everyone else has done pretty well though. Riding Peavy most of the month has been helpful.

lol mrbig. Hell that isn't even the first time I've been accused of cheating (even tongue in cheek) while being completely within the rules! hahahaha

I will have to play with that fire eventually though. With Myers out - and I'm thinking it could be a while, but that's just a guess - then I can more comfortably take SP matchups without the possibility of 'sacrificing' a save.

Through 5/24, I've only taken 11 starts this month, accruing 67.1 IP compared to a total in April of 24 starts and 157.1 IP. I'm sure I'll start making up ground to pace in the next few weeks.

What are the odds?

I get 4 IP from closers, No wins, losses or saves = 30 points.

Pretty low.

But consider yourself lucky. That's 4 perfect innings @7.50 pts/IP which is better than your average starting pitcher inning. I used to get ticked when closers didn't appear in a save situation, but it's still 1 less IP from a starter.....which is a good thing!

Well at least they are doing maintenance while the market is closed!!! I don't have an issue with them being down during that time whatsoever. Should have almost zero impact.

Anyone else gonna be away from a computer this weekend? I'm trying to figure out who to stash on my bench and wheather or not to use Peavy or just keep Paps in that slot.

I think I'm leaning towards Peavy because Paps has the potential to lose ALOT of money with a bad outing or a slight injury problem

Same with Maggs, I think I'm gonna ditch him before i leave in a few hours

I started King Felix hoping for about 12k's in 6IP. Didn't come close to that but he still did get the win and only used 5.1IP.

StL - how many points did Felix end up with ?

tough choice on SP's tonight. I narrowed it down to Haren or Cain, and chose Haren after much deliberation. looks like Cain will likely have the best night of all the SP's, but I'm more than happy with Haren's outing, especially with my poor track record with SP's

Wow. Watching web gems. Anyone else see Delmon Young throw out Thome at home? I know Thome is pretty slow, but Young caught a fly ball 10-15 feet in front of the warning track in right and threw a guy out at home. That's ridiculous, total cannon.

Also, Sergio Mitre's curveball to Shawn Green was scary-good.

Nice to have an all-around productive night. As long as none of my 3 remaining closers (Paps, Saito, Cordero) blow it, I'll be thrilled.

This Cubs/Dodgers game has been really weird but fun to watch as a fan. Dodgers gave up 7 only to come back to score 4 of their own to get the lead back here in the 8th. Singling the Cubs to death.

lol.......I had tallied my spreadsheet, bemoaning my pitiful RP choices (Wagner), only to look at it later to see Papelbon throw an 11 point inning and Saito get a save from the comeback Dodger win! Woo hoo!

Blackjackis21 - As the month winds down, I notice that as you predicted many in the running for the monthly prize are running out of innings. I am not sure I am going to catch you. Assuming that you come in first, what is your first choice of prizes?

Hey JMan - yeah, looks for now like a two-horse race for the top monthly spot. You certainly could still take it.

If I end up having my choice, I'm leaning toward the Wii, but truth be told would be fairly happy with any of the GPS, camera, or the Creative Zen. I've got a 4 and 6 yr. old that would have fun watching me play the Wii :)

How about you, have a favorite?

Congrats on what looks like a first-place in the weekly contest - I'm hoping to hang on for second.

LOL The site says I did not register in time for the weekly award but has me listed in the monthly rankings. Obvious bug there.

For comparison I am:
Rank 101
RHP: 5427.66
Usage: +16/-30
Value: $908

I consider myself in the running based on Bandos' adjusted standings. There's 4 more months in the season. Your IP are fairly in line. I'd stick it out if I were you and go after the July or August monthly prize based on what happens in June.

HG -

As much as I'd like to see you Drop out :), you are at about 5250 in terms of my adjusted points, puts you 25th place, about 650 points behind Species.

maybe be very thrifty with SP innings in June, see where you are, and then have all those IP left for July if you don't think you have a legit shot.

problem is...Since you're not counting my totals because I am out of top 100
It only puts me 25th when added to top 100
what about so many others we don't know about, also out of top 100

Your place doesnt matter so much as your point total relative to the leaders, IMO. There are a few like Ender who may be between you and the leaders, but a strong month of hitter and RP picks....you never know

I agree. It's the 650 point deficit that matters *in the adjusted standings of course). Making up those points is what will win it. The question I guess is this: Are you 651 points better than Species over the next 4 months?

Position matters too. You need to be 650 better than Species, 580 (or whatever) better than me, 500 better than jibjabs, etc.

P.S. Am I the only loser who is still under $700?

Re 35

Alex - obviously being under $700 hasn't hurt your performance. I am fortunate to have enough $$$ that I don't bother trying to make more (I'm sure many others are in the same boat - like Species), but you are proof that a big bankroll isn't the key to this game. I'm guessing $700 can buy you pretty much whoever you want, or if not, close to it. so playing the right players on the right days is still the key to success. and you must have been doing that very well so far.

in a strange way, having too much money could actually be a curse. too many decisions, and too much second guessing (at least for me that's the case).

Blackjackis21 - My kids would love the Wii so that would probably be the first choice . . . though they would be happy with any of the game systems (PSP, DS). Though I am tempted to go for something that I would like - ipod or GPS.

I am not have a very good day so I am not counting on a weekly prize.

I was stuck at $650 to $700 for quite awhile (I whined about enough that I'm sure you remember). I can say the real problem at that point was choosing money over points. I could field whoever I wanted, but would have no $$$ left over to invest in my bench. If I invested in my bench to make more money then I had to sacrifice in hitting somewhere or stick to cheap closers.

It might be a bit different now as players like Fielder (double his old price) and Ordonez (more than double his old price) have soared in price. I had expected that average price of specific players would remain fairly stable as they were bought and sold, but clearly the algorithm leads to inflated prices of higher performing (and therefore higher volume traded) players. This will mean that we will need to have a decent sized bankroll to field the best lineup as the season goes on.

There will always be bargains out there though and if you can pick the right guys at the right time then it won't be necessary to have the highest bankroll. The question is thought, how much will it take? $700 works great right now I'm guessing, but will it later? I'm sure Alex that you will make more oney as the season goes on though. Start buying White Sox and Devil Rays now for instance :)

Blackjackis21 - Now that I think about it, all of those looking for innings (monthly and weekly prize seekers), probably have the same set of pitchers each night. Just as those who are running for the season prizes have many of the same RPs each night.

Kinda a Homer pick, but look at his last 3 games.
Was almost like points in the bank based on that.

Only SP today is Peavy with Gregg in the other SP slot.

Feeling good about the cycle I am in again.

What are your pts? Usage? I will run them on Tuesday Morning after 10 am, so post yours and I can include it.

All I do is take current points, add 7 points per hitter game under (or subtract 7 per hitter game over) and add 4.75 per IP under (subtract 4.75 for each IP over). That shows me how far I am behind Species and Mrbig:)

For those that haven't realized, tomorrow is not a full slate for the NL.
All AL teams are playing.

SDG, LAD, SFO, HOU, NYM, WASH are off.
Just a heads up if you need to make sells.
I've only got three to dump, all within a 5 minute window.

Peavy, Hoffman, Kent

He is, if you don't have him, you're just shy of 80 points down to the crowd.

Hadn't even looked at Santana.
Think I've only owned him once this year and didn't do much.
Isn't even on my short list.

And I got the Trevor Save.
Of course, Al Reyes screwed me.
Maybe I'll learn one of these days.

No Santana for me until he proves he is back.

Only pitcher and matchup I would even think about for tomorrow would be Marshall against Florida and that one scares me a little.
But, doesn't scare me as bad as every other matchup out there.

Still a case of where I think I can be very, very careful for now.

And don't feel like eating up a lot of innings.

I'm going to check my calendar for the weeks/ month(s) I expect to have normal access before making a prize run. I've saved enough innings/ appearances that I should be able to make some noise later in the season.

Was going well today until Papelbon and Jones came in to save their games.

Jones is going to be a nice negative. Paps at least manages the save, but not pretty at that. Woulda rather Paps blow the save, as most competitive teams probably have him...
