Ugghhh! What an awful weekend for me. SP and RP blowing up and besides Youk and Ichiro, just a lost weekend. Dropped 180 pts in the adjusted standings since Friday morning AND used more innings than the rest of you clowns. |

Its fun to see my team (as well as all the other excellent teams here) shooting up the leaderboard as we outperform teams that have vastly overused their innings (whether going for a monthly prize or just using a poor strategy). I seem to move up even on poor days. Of course, this weekend was pretty solid for me.
I was even able to keep an eye on RV and came out of it with $745, meaning I made $$ on the weekend. Would have been $11 higher, but I missed the Santana sell by 1 min, 20 seconds because I was playing with my son. Seriously, where are my priorities!!!

From post on RH message board:
"From: rangerxbob Subject: The Real Leaderboard Hey guys, A lot of people are speculating what their ranking will be come the end of the season and it is hard to see outside of the top 100 because it is artificially filled with many teams way over in pitcher usage. So I have created a public league for those to join that are either on the right pace for pitcher usage or have negative or close to negative pitcher usage. Hopefully, enough of the true contenders join this league. The league is: The Real Leaderboard (For teams that are negative in pitcher usage)"

lol mrbig - I actually had my son pause the game he was playing on cartoonnetwork.com so I could make a few sells yesterday. Get your priorities straight dude!
I saw that 'Real Leaderboard' post as well, but I'll pass. I see no reason to more easily advertise my buys and sells than already exists.
ukula - actually I'm cutting Jason Giambi in for a piece of the action. He had told me personally that he had given ARod some new greenies in April and that was the reason for his hot start - and I had him pretty much every day in April. But after getting told by MLB of his positive test for amphetamines, he told ARod to stop, so I benched him and it worked out perfectly. After that I'm giving Clemens a cut because of the joy he gave me on May 6th when I was at Yankee Stadium. Wanna hear the story?

Any word on whether Ortiz is playing today? Last thing I saw said that his soreness was believed to be due to dehydration and that he should play today. His price dive today says that lots of people believe otherwise.

You saw Clemens at the stadium on May 6th? Please tell me what happened - supply some pictures if you have any.
Speaking of Clemens, do you think he'll provide the Yankees with a big enough lift to storm past the Devil Rays into 4th place?
Wab told me you were partners with him and Michelle.

With another Lefty facing the Sox and their big lead, I imagine he won't play. The Sox broadcast team seemed to imply that he would return Wednesday.

I am not using Beckett, but am using a ton of SPs so that I can make a run at Blackjackis21 for the monthly prize.
What does that mean for you? Beckett will have a career night . . . use him.

I don't have any starters going today. Thought seriously about Penny, but I won't be around at the freeze today and don't feel like taking a big $$ hit.
As much as we have all complained about underperforming SP's against the Nats, I feel like I usually get solid points. Not spectacular points, mind you, but still average to above-average.
I think I am going with Bedard and Young tomorrow, but lots of great options. I've used Haren a ton lately, but Texas has been hitting pretty well lately. I would take Weaver against Seattle, but going up against King Felix makes a W too dicey for my tastes.
I am making a slightly embarrasing pick today, I think I'll keep my mouth shut about it until after today plays out. Maybe I'll get lucky. I guess everyone can check my roster in a day or 2 anyway, but maybe you will all forget by then!

Re 13
haven't decided on whether to use Beckett or not. The fact that it's against the Indians makes me a little wary. Do want to play one SP today, but having a hard time picking between Beckett, Sheets, Penny, Smoltz, etc.

No Beckett here either. However, I'm due for a negative total points day. While I like my chances, Jman can still catch me. Good luck.

Folks need to make up their minds about Beckett. He's been an absolute rollercoater today. Fifteen minutes ago he was back to break-even for the second time today after gaining almost $5.00 out of the gate then losing all his gains plus some more. He broke even the first time about three hours ago, only to drop about $3.00 Now he's dropped again by a little over $2.00
I'm going to hang on to him a little longer, but I won't take a huge hit at freeze.

Tough to look at box scores today. Some guys that I strongly considered, but didn't end up going with: Sheffield, Morneau, Penny.
My embarrassing pick was Heilman. Since I didn't go with any SP and figured Paps wouldn't get the save opp after throwing a bunch of pitches yesterday, I took a chance on Heilman stealing a win in relief. Figured the game would be close. He almost came away with it too, since the Mets had the bases loaded when he was in line for a win. Stupid Mets!

Just a quick report. I made a run at the monthly prize. Looks like I will come up a bit short to Blackjackis21 (congrats!). I thought that I would give a report for those who are interested. For the month of May (thus far):
261 hitter games used - 5.22 points per game 960 innings used - 4.15 points per inning
At the start of the month my TV was about 600. It is now down to about 380. I played as many starting pitchers as possible and missed many of the start times (I do have a time-consuming job and a family that at times needs attention). Thus, I took many hits on TV throughout the month.

Wow, thats pretty impressive to get down that low in TV and still be up there! I think I'm working towards a possible July monthly prize quest.
I thought this was kinda funny, our two "experiments" had good nights last night:
Ortmeier hit his first MLB HR Jennings pitched 5 scoreless innings

The low TV has certainly come into play late in the month. I cannot get my top choice players at each postion. Obviously, I get the pitchers that I want and then use the rest on the hitters. Thus, my points per hitter game are quite low and getting lower as the month goes on.

Was anyone chasing the monthly prize able to snag a weekly prize along the way?
I'm wondering if they are mutually exclusive events or are strongly correlated. It would seem that someone pursuing the monthly contest would put up a huge week or two, but at the same time would there be a tendency to "hold back" just a little for purposes of future considerations? I know it happens with season prize players, but does it occur on a smaller scale with weekly/ monthly players?

C1 - I think you can go for a monthly prize and pick up a weekly prize along the way. I won the first weekly prize and am hoping to hold on to second for the montly prize. Also, Blackjackis21 is likely going to win the monthly prize and picked up the third prize for the week.

My stats (though I don't have them tracked) would be similar to JMan's - maybe even closer to 1000 innings pitched.
My RV is higher than JMan's - I started at around $1250, and am now at $1050. I think I've had a minimum of $300 of unused cash each day, and have typically had 3 of the most expensive guys (Santana, Peavy, ARod/Ortiz) on my bench. I haven't concerned myself with being around for gametimes for a long time.
I think the most important aspect of going for the monthly prize is to make sure you have the IP's available. Even someone starting the game new (1300 IPs available, $300 TV) would be better off than someone with 700 IP's left and, say $700. In the monthly contest, closers become nearly meaningless - you're generally better off going with 6 starters a day, assuming you can find a couple RP-eligible pitchers who are starting (and you believe will give you positive points, of course).
JMan was first in last week's Weekly contest, and I was third, so the weekly and monthly are definitely correlated. I believe the weekly contest can be won once every 4 weeks, and you are able to win both a montly prize and a weekly prize.

I should also say that in going for the monthly prize, I did take quite a hit for the yearly prize. In the adjusted rankings, my recollection is that I was somewhere in the 20's at the beginning of the month and am in the 40's now.
I still have hopes that come the end of the season, I will be within shouting distance of Species and the other leaders.

With the amount of inactive teams, the 1 to 12 ratio is really not a factor. Players rarely go out and actually holding players is not necessary, though I have been doing it with AROD, Peavy and Santana, just in case. As we go further into the season, and people have used up their innings going for May and June monthly prizes, the pitchers will always be available, it seems. Most likely, the hitters will be too, as more people will quit playing. Maybe do a 1 to 16 for the draft and then a 1 to 32 for each new team added after draft day to shrink the market a bit and force managers to choose.

Bandos - I'm not sure people quitting the game will help make hitters more available. Most people will quit with a full roster, not an empty one. The effect I would expect from people quitting is slightly less volatile prices...especially for pitchers.

Anyone who ever collected baseball cards around the time of the Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Upper Deck #1 card - their first card ever - would find this article fascinating. Gawd I can't tell you how many Ben McDonald, Todd Van Poppel, Kevin Maas, etc cards are probably still collecting dust in my garage:

I just logged in frantically to sell off youkilis since boston is off today, I had this awful feeling that I may have lost about $30 on him, but no...he's still climbing!!!!
And I'm getting greedy, he's now the 6th most expensive hitter. There's no way he's worth almost $67. Why can't I hit that sell button though????
For what its worth, I've been gaining alot of money the last 3 days and I've only sold maybe 3-4 guys at the freeze over that span. $11 on Ichiro, $14 on Youks, $13 on Peavy, $9 on Prince (just today), +$5 on Sheffield...all that adds up! I'm up about $60 over 3 days

Alex - I still haven't asked about moving. I will do so in the next few days.
It would certainly suck to establish residency in another state and not end up in the top 10. It would suck even more to end up winning, but to not move. Having a family would make moving tough. Not even a problem if RH says "no".
Does anyone know why some states are ineligible? I always assumed it was because they would need a gambling license to award prizes to some states, but I really don't know.

Not sure about the reason for some states not being prize eligible. I don't think it has to do with a gambling license though...fantasy baseball is not considered a 'game of chance' but rather a 'game of skill', which is governed by a different set of laws. I suppose those laws must be different in some states than others. Kind of ridiculous considering how similar it is to something like sports betting or poker, but I'm certainly not complaining!

From Rotowire:
GM Brian Sabean told KNBR 680 radio in San Francisco that the Giants are "going to have to do something" about Benitez (knee) and that the team will resolve the matter in the next "24 to 48 hours."
Sabean said the Giants would solve the matter internally or externally. It remains to be seen exactly what that means but it sounds like Benitez is done as the Giants' closer. Brad Hennessey could be on the verge of officially taking Benitez's job.
