Subject: Rotohog 6/25-6/28 Weekday thread

  Posted by: Bandos - [05292011] Mon, Jun 25, 2007, 11:21

Some shifting but Yaz is still smokin. I had to use the 5th column for RP for the first time. Too bad it was Nathan, Cordero and Krod for a combined 1 point for three of those spots. Pased on Beckett and Peavy, took Johan. Too bad I decided to start Peavy at the last minute in B101, initially I was just gonna go Beckett. Another great day for hitters due largely to Mauer who I picked up for the weekend. Will he be the best catcher in Ball the way he is supposed to be from here on out?

Brutal weekend. And the Hamels rain delay REALLY hurt. The only reason I haven't fallen even further off the pace is that my starting pitchers have been doing well. Relievers and hitters have been really weak.

I liked it better when Big and Species were leading!

450 pts off the pace, yikes.

I've had different pieces rolling at various times and I just need to be consistent with all three. At the very least I want to keep 2/3 segments on positive trends to stay in contention.

I used to believe I was getting killed when I'd guess wrong on 2, 3, or 4 things in a given day, but I've come to realize that is about par for the course. I would be thinking everyone else was making correct choices all the time, and obviously that is impossible to do. I think maybe twice all year I actually made good picks all around.

keeping 2/3 segments rolling like Pops mentioned, and holding your own in the other one, is probably about as well as anyone can expect to do.

donk44,

I agree. For a while I was kicking myself for not making all the right choices, particularly on hitting. But there are so many "stud" hitters, we are all bound to generally make some good choices and miss some. Better managers should do better in the end, but on any given day there are going to be some guys with a lot of good picks, some with lots of bad picks, and some in the middle.

What SP's did folks end up going with? I took Halladay only. Sabathia has poor career numbers against the A's and Bonderman has poor career numbers against the Rangers. Lots of strong options though!

Sabathia here. Sheets was the other one I was considering.

As has been the pattern with my SP's lately, Sabathia starts poorly (6H & 2ER in the first 2 innings), then knuckles down until his team scores some runs. Just hope they don't bring in the horrible Joe Borowski to blow...oops I mean SAVE the game.

Bah - Bonderman and Sheets. Was so close to picking Hudson over Bonderman too but I figured the Braves offense has been pitiful while the Tigers were going against a nobody named Loe...

Couldn't pick Sabathia as I'm an A's fan and the A's always punish me if I dare to pick against them

I've only used Sabathia a couple times this year, but the one negative thing about him is that he often uses up 8 or 9 innings. So even when he pitches a good game like tonight, he gets 7 points per IP instead of 9 or 10 points per IP when a SP goes 6 or 7 innings and wins. Guess that's going to happen more often when your team has a terrible closer like the Indians do. Not that I'm complaining, just an observation.

Man, does anyone have any hitting points tonight ? None of the big names has done anything that I see.

No hitting points here.

donk, did you just knock a 7 RHP/IP average? Bandos uses 4.75 for his adjustment. I have had 1 day all month where my SP averaged averaged over 8 RHP/IP and that was a single 7 IP start.

No hitting points. Guillen leads the team tonight w/ 3.30
No starters, though I almost went Sabathia and/or Sheets.
No saves yet (though all 5 closers still in play).

But... I just pulled off a win w/ Heilman. That's a nice 28 points in 1 IP. :)

Brings my total for the night UP to 17.

Re:14

No Ender, it wasn't a knock against getting 7 points per IP for a SP. I would of course take that every time. It was just an observation about Sabathia's innings usage, and lack of a decent closer.

NP, I just felt like throwing down some stats ;)

Fielder, Hart, and Guillen are my only hitters in the black. Hart seems to be doing everything he can late to give back as many points as possible.

My 2 cheap hitters - Hart & Pence cost a combined $14.50 and scored 13.06pts

The rest of my hitters cost $463.19 and combined for -11.49pts.

I might as well share too. Yesterday I moved Mauer and his 2HRs for Martin. Today I moved Martin and his nice day to a blank. I did Have Rios, but the sum of the rest of my hitters is negative.

Somehow, I lost 6 points overnight. Not sure what day they were from, but my YTD total is 6 points lower than yesterday's scoring should have produced.

Anyone else notice a similar discrepancy?

Re: 22

best guess is that there was a scoring change from a past game where they changed an unearned run to an earned run.

I seem to remember seeing a list of MLB scoring changes not too long ago in my internet baseball travels, but can't recall where that was now. I'll see if I can find something.

Okay, time for a Haren roll call.

After much deliberation I decided to skip him today. I would normally say that would guarantee a 10 strikeout shutout, but he's down 1-0 in the first after giving up a double and a single (with a pair of outs in between).

You're not alone Pops. I also had Haren. A possible save and a win for Haren turns into a nasty loss for Embree. About an 85 point swing. Sums up my rotohog baseball season. Bring on rotohog football!

No Haren. Cleveland just generally kill righties too much for me to trust even Haren. I would sit Peavy against them and anyone else too (righties at least).

Hmm, ESPN just cut away to the Big Hurt live. He was my favorite player growing up, hope to see him get #500 live! Nevermind, he just K'd.

I've been doing pretty miserable lately, so I'm going to go ahead and give myself props for picking up Braun for today:-)

More brilliance on my part. Last second change of heart on Loney since I wasn't sure he was starting today and put Berkman in his place. My gamble on Big Hurt while moving Howard to the bench, not so good either. Rios also taking back some of yesterday's points.

especially wouldn't expect him to be out at a price of $25, though I guess his starting price was pretty low.

picked all the wrong hitters today, except Utley. partially salvaged a bad day with 2 late saves at least.

Haha, Soriano is off tomorrow. Don't know if you meant it that way, but he's guaranteed to score "more" tomorrow then he did today!

I had Zambrano and Berkman. Also had Hart and Braun, who didn't do much. Here's hoping Berkman hits a homer in the top of an inning, followed by a Hart triple and Braun homer in the bottom of the inning.

Since I'm an Astros fan, the Berkman homer should be a 3-run shot so the Astros still get the win:-)

I'm getting the feeling that Griffey has a cap of $25. He's been out every time I checked today, but always $25.

I'm disapointed that RH put a cap on any player. What's the use of going for big FV if they take away the advantage of having it?

I was thinking the same thing, but that seems to be an exceptionally low cap. Definitely hasn't been inflation from $25 despite being sold out quite a while.

Still, Griffey hasn't been below $10.84 all year and plenty of guys who were priced below Griffey were able to climb higher then $25 (examples: Delmon Young started at $2 and climbed up to $31.67, Howie Kendrick started at $1 and climbed up to $26.70, John Maine went as low as $3.94 and made it up to $41.84). This doesn't make sense since intuitively a players "cap price" would be tied to his starting price.

I'm generally against the idea of a cap in this game, but if there is a cap, it should be the same for all players. This seems to be true since Pujols and ARod both are capped at $90 (except an apparent glitch where Pujols briefly made it above $90, but his season range indicates that $90 was his high point).

More cap venting : RH expects me to purchace the premium package yet there is no advantage in having it at this point in the season.

My team has a FV of about 2200. No need to monitor prices closely when I know how the move anyway...

Wang and Unit are good for about -30 so far.

Not the right day to lose track of Gregg and fill in an SP slot w/ misc.

I was going to start Unit anyway, so I guess the real swing is from Gregg to Wang - still hurts.

New York was leading 8-6 in the top of the eighth when the game was halted for the last time. Play will be resumed at the point it was stopped when the Yankees return to Camden Yards on July 27.

This could be interesting. Maybe some of these scenarios can play out now that we've been talking about, like one player being traded to the other team before the game is 'resumed'.

Guru - about those missing 6 points from the other day.....now I am only missing 5.70 points. somehow I gained back .30 points overnight, but I have no idea how or why. still missing the 5.70 points, and even went back again this morning and rechecked ALL the daily scores all the way back to April 1st, and still no changes there.

I have emailed them twice about this, but still haven't gotten any response from customer service. I'm sure they are pretty busy with their "upgrade" project, but would be nice to hear something back.

did you gain the .30 points overnight also, or are you still 6 points short ?

Similar situation to MrBig...After what seems like weeks since I've even managed a day of 7 pts/game from my hitters, I got 132 points out of 7 hitters yesterday (2 got rained out) along with a save from Gregg. Going to have to wait a couple months to see if I got a save from Rivera too.

At least my relievers of Mariano, Capps and Wagner look like they are doing well.

I picked up Holliday but forgot to move him up which looks like a good mistake so far.

A horrible day for my roster and C-losers!

I didn't have Rivera or Capps, though I did anticipate reasonably close games.

I also skipped KRod and that looked great until Chris Ray decided to pitch like Chris Ray.

It seems like my good hitting day will be duplicated both by popular hitting choices as well as by bad closer choices.

A rare 4 save day (Wagner, Putz, Pap, KRod). Unfortunately, for efficency's sacke, Wagner had an extra inning and Putz had an extra 2/3. I have yet to pick up an uber-efficient 1/3 IP save. With the state of the game in 2007 there aren't that many of those anyway.

I'm surprised you would start Gregg since he pitched 3 innings in the last 2 days. I went with Hennessey instead so of course he gave up the winning HR and took the loss.

I goofed with that one.

I was compensating for skipping him yesterday. Then, of course, my choice for the last "P" slot tonight came down to Young, Hoffman, or Putz.

I took the least efficient of the 3 choices b/c I had already backed myself in the corner by giving away the "SP" slot earlier.

So yeah, i'm surprised I would do that too, grrrr!

Re: 81

I have Hennessey in my regular roto league, and have been suffering through his outings as well. He really shouldn't be a closer, they just have no one else. Then again, neither should Borowski or Todd Jones, and they have jobs.

Ok, that must be about my 5th hammering of those two (and I use the term loosely), "pitchers" this month. Maybe I should lay off.....naaaah.

Ah, I suddenly remember my logic from earlier in the day.

If Gregg got the save earlier, I was definitely going to start Young.

He didn't get the save, but as game time approached I felt I couldn't pass up the chance that Young would have a monster night.

I have Hennessey in two leagues and definitely dissapointed. He does really well except when the game is on the line he gives up a solo HR. At least he goes after the guys. I think the bigger problem with him is that the Giants stink and the chances to actually save a game are few and far between. Even last night wasn't a save opp as they had already blown the lead earlier and then tied it back up.

I am also a less than enthusiastic Hennessey owner. I have him in a H2H league and he's been a waste of a roster spot. I'm having a hard time simply dropping him, but he sure isn't worth much.

I'm negative today. Had Beckett but my hitters just stink as usual.

Anyone watching the Braves/Marlins game. A couple bad calls go against the Marlins including one in this inning and then on top of that an obstruction call which was suspect as well. So now 3 runs are in. Don't have any dogs in this fight, just feel bad for the Marlins.
