Subject: Rotohog 7/1-7/8 Thread

  Posted by: Bandos - [05292011] Sun, Jul 01, 2007, 13:33

Boating is sure taking a toll on my RV and while I am holding my own, I don't have the time to do in depth research. I am right at 7/G and 4.75/IP but still losing ground.

Question: Does anyone know what "premium prizes" means, when you upgrade?

No Haren for me Today - had some regret initially but it looks like he's having trouble pitching with prosperity. Probably doesn't know what it feels like to pitch with a big lead.

Sold Griffey last night due to the off day tomorrow and of course he homers...

Woe is me. More horrible hitters and Kevin Gregg blows the save and will likely lose the game while pitching multiple innings.

when will they learn not to try to pitch him (Gregg) two innings. had 2 outs in the 9th when he blew it. so instead of getting about 20 points, he is now in line to get around -15. nice 35 point swing on one AB/out he didn't get.

The bad news - I started Haren today. Seemed like a good idea after getting staked to an 8-0 lead, but he ended up with only 11.93 pts in 5.33 IP - thanks to the win.

The good news - by starting Haren, I benched Gregg, who managed -6.64 in 2 IP.

So, the net benefit of starting Haren: +3.33 IP, +18.57 pts. Not particularly good, but at least Haren netted me about 5.5 pts/IP for his extra IP. So the decision wasn't a total waste.

Not as good as yesterday, though, when I started both Sabathia and Sheets, and neither Gregg nor Papelbon pitched, so there was no marginal cost to starting them.

At least the Marlins came back to tie to avoid the L from Gregg. Then they won it the next inning when a new pitcher was in.

At least the game led into the All-Star selection show. I didn't realize it was on TN this year.

That would have been fine if I didn't also have Wickman :( There was no escaping the L for me and it came at the expense of more ER. I haven't looked at the final box yet, but it aint going to be pretty.

And Jose Reyes becomes the 2nd player to hit the $90 ceiling (unless Pujols did briefly ?)

It might take a while for him to get to the point where people won't sell him anymore, just like with ARod. On the other hand, there are so many good shortstops he might never stay locked at $90.

Would be interesting to see what would happen if 5 or 6 top players hit $90 and stayed there. If you didn't want to sell any of them, and risk not getting them back, that would severely restrict your lineup options/flexibility. Probably won't happen, but who knows.

Pujols actually made it to (I believe) $90.40. That appears to have been a bug, but he did make it to $90.

mrbig - I think you are correct on Pujols. He sure didn't stay there very long though.

It will be interesting to see if Reyes sells off after his next game freeze time.

Wow. I managed the nearly impossible accomplishment of being one of the only two people in the top 100 with a negative score despite not using a SP yesterday.

And thank you Rotohog for tricking me into thinking there was a Fla-Atl doubleheader and using Wickman instead of Jenks.

I just tried to upgrade this morning, but I think the transaction failed. After I filled in the page with name, address, and credit card info, the next page was simply blank, except for the RotoHog header and footer.

Has anyone successfully completed the upgrade? Should there be a confirmation screen? Does the "Upgrade" button disappear once the upgrade is complete?

I am not sure what you get by upgrading except for the live prices. You can refresh to get the current prices. My understanding was that they were working coming up with some ideas that would give more benefit to upgrading. Perhaps that's what these premium prizes are--though I'd think they would be more specific. Btw, I was supposed to receive two T-shirts but only got one. Not that it's a big deal but if I'm going to be ineliigble for a real prize because of it, then I might as well get the T-shirt.

Reyes has lost a buck-fitty already today, so I guess that answer that question (#18)

I somehow made about $50 in the last 24 hours. The only thing I've been doing differently is getting SPs instead of RPs to go for the July monthly deal.

Bonderman covered up Pettitte's bomb for me. Without his bomb I'd have the 5th best score on day 1...

Is live scoring part of the premium package? I thought I saw that listed a few days ago, but now I don't see it, unless that is what's meant by "View Stats and Market Data in Real-Time"

My understanding is that everyone is currently getting the premimum package right now. If you don't upgrade by July 9th then you will have to refresh to continue to receive that. Since we have to refresh to get the updated stats anyhow and money is not really a big deal (to me anyhow) then the only "incentive" for me would be what are those premium prizes all about?

I've lost wll over $100 in value the past 2-3 weeks. Even when I'm around, I've not been selling at the freeze. I am just tired of being chained to the computer or when I am around to remember to try and sell like I used to. That irrelevence of money combined with my lack of ability to pick the right hitters has really soured my ability to focus.

I find it strange they would charge $5.95 for less than half a season of service, when they advertised $9.95 for a whole season in their FAQ. Looks like they decided to up their price. ASB is a couple weeks past the middle of the season.

Except that the first month of the season was going to be free, in any event. So we are really paying for about 60% of what was originally going to be the premium period. On that basis, 5.95 seems pretty much on track as a pro-rated charge.

Actually it was the first 2 weeks that were going to be free, but if it is a pro rated charge based on not including a 'free' period, then that period wasn't really free as it just wasn't a charged for period to begin with. Pretty trivial anyway and I'm not complaining just wondered how they came up with that price.

You would think that the stats would work similar to Yahoo Stat Tracker. If you don't buy it, then you either calculate by hand or wait until the next day to see your scores. If you just hit refresh and see the points then there is little point of it since I already have to hit refresh to see the scores as it is now. The market data refreshes automatically but not the scores.

I don't think anyone knows what "premium prizes" are, since they don't list what they are anywhere on the site.

I was planning on upgrading today, but sounds like some people are having trouble getting their transaction through (a couple days ago, someone on the RH message board related the same problem as Guru had). So I think I'll wait a couple more days for them to hopefully work out the bugs in that process.

Hmmmm 60% chance of precipitation for the Mets/Rockies game.

My guess is that game makes up b/n 2-5 players on most every team in contention, so it should be interesting to see how things work out.

I'm more concerned/interested in the impact on Fantasy Sports Live.

There's a Chico's on FSL? I'm registered as Ender, but use Chico's for Yahoo and RH as well, basically anything that requires a team name. I just love the name and of course the reference.

My hitters are actually adequate tonight, but my pitchers have just about undone every single point my hitters have got me.

Guess I wasn't the only one with Bedard - I had to move down one reliever and at least it was Jenks as I didn't think he'd get a save opportunity with Bedard pitching.

I sold A-Rod - hope that I can get him back if the injury isn't serious.

Has anyone else calculated their own pts/g and pts/ip recently?

I just completed mine for the first time all season.

SP PTS/IP(IP): Apr - 4.12(56), May - 6.18(1.62), June - 5.50(194)
RP PTS/IP(IP): Apr - 13.49(61), May - 13.20(78), June - 12.66(67)

I didn't actually calculate my hitter totals, but it looks like I'm around 6.85 pts/g overall.

I'd love to see numbers for some other teams.

SP pt/ip: 3.83 (apr), 5.96 (may), 5.11 (june), 5.05 (tot)
RP pt/ip: 15.77 (58.3 ip, apr), 16.49 (74.3 ip, may), 11.91 (76 ip, june), 14.54 (214 ip, tot)
Hitters pt/g: 7.78 (apr), 5.91 (may), 6.63 (june), 6.69 (tot)
SP+RP pt/ip: 7.93 (apr), 9.06 (may), 7.46 (june), 8.16 (tot)

Basically, other than miserable performances from my RP, June was basically between April and May. June is probably a reasonable gauge of how I will do the rest of the year, though I'd like to think my SP will be more toward my May average then my June average since I made a few admittedly bonehead picks in June.

For hitting, I started out playing mostly studs in April, followed by mostly matchups (historical batter vs. pitcher) in May & June. In late June I started playing more the hot hitters, also looking at righty/lefty splits if they are pronounced (i.e. I start Berkman during his hot streak against righty pitchers, but not lefties).

No idea what hitting strategy is the best so far. I'd like to think a combination of May & late June strategies is the winner, but really too hard to tell at this point.

I really think there is a bug with Griffey. No way he should be sold out at $25 and I really don't believe he's fully owned. Just my feeling, but both seem unreasonable since he hasn't been on any particular super-hot streak lately.

Yeah I'm watching him right now and he is still out and his price keeps rising. He is now double his price just today. ARod is sold out too and his buy price is 90.20 instead of 90.00. I finally sold him. Part of the problem with my ranking IMM is that I blindly started him and Reyes through their slums in May and June. Obviously I was making other bad picks too though (and continue to do so). I decided that I was selling him yesterday unless he was big. When he got hurt--it was a pretty easy decision. He is NOT a must-have right now and if he is later--than oh well. I have to do something different.

I also sent customer service an email saying I thought there was a problem with Griffey.

As far as ARod I think a few people like me sold him when his price started falling to head off a major crash, but then bought him back from fear of him selling out and not having the opportunity to start him at all.

The question is what was the bug? It looks like being stuck at $25 was the bug. The rising price is keeping with what we have seen all year from other players who have been OUT.

63mrbig

I think the $25 cap was a bug AND not enough people were able to buy him. Just a theory, but I think they fixed the "cap" bug and the "volume" bug at the same time, meaning there were more Griffey's available for purchase and this quick rise in purchases spurred his quick price increase after the cap was fixed.

All season long we have no hitting points for pitchers. Tonight, Hamels pinch-hits and he shows -1.10 points. I'm sure it's of no relevance because anyone else who is holding him like me certainly wouldn't have him in a pitching slot today. Anyone recall a pitcher pinch-hitting earlier in the year? Perhaps Zambrano (I seem to recall the Cubs using him in the past)?

All-around, a great day for me.

Yahoo tricked me into thinking Unit was starting so I dropped Gregg (thought the Bosox would blowout the Rays so I didn't have Paps slotted in).

I thought Saito's game was a 9:05 start so I sold him 5 minutes early.

Oh, and I bumped Matsuzaka in favor of Unit, and well, i've already addressed how that worked out.

It's great if you think about it...I saved 10 IP's and all it cost me was about 120 pts, sweet!

Lots of SP options today. Should make for some decent differentiation, unless they are all solid.

I have Sheets. Will probably go with Peavy, but Penny has been lights-out lately. Beckett and Maine are also great options. Taking a chance on the CC/Verlander matchup isn't for me and I may shy away from the Penny/Hudson matchup for the same reason.

This is kinda fun trying to pick 6 starters every day. I just caught up on my stats through the last 2 weeks ago and I've been doing alot better with hitting.

7.92 avg per game since June 26

Using 6 starters every day for the first 4 days of July has gotten me right at 4pts per inning (Only used 4 starters on Tuesday due to a lack of RP starters). That also includes Andy Pettitte's lovely -61.15 outing, and Rich Hill's -18.06 last night. Other than that...so far so good. Hopefully the rest of the month goes this nicely and I'll have a shot to be playing my brand new Wii by mid August :)

I went with Peavy only today.

You may remember me saying that last week when I sold Peavy (and other SPs) at their freeze times, I was losing $5-$10 despite selling within a second of the freeze time. Today (using the same computer and same internet connection) I managed to get out without losing one cent. How is that possible?

P.S. I'm recovered from my 24 hours of suicidal thoughts (just kidding) resulting from my 4 day drop from 4th to 13th in the adjusted standings, have figured out that my problem is I suck at picking relievers, have figured out WHY I suck at it, and am ready to start kicking some ass.

Just go by rotohog's clock

Lets say game starts at 7:05pm and when you click to sell a player, it say "order time is 6:54:56PM"

If you wait for the 10 second timer to hit 5 to confirm the order, you're good to go - since the time will then be 6:55:01PM and past the freeze time.

also went with Peavy only. almost went with Sheets too, but decided at the last minute to use F. Cordero in that game insead. so I hope Sheets wins (but not by too much).

I know what you mean about picking RP's Alex. do you go with the better ones, even when they are less likely to get a save chance. or do you go with the ones that have the best chance at getting a save opportunity, even when they aren't the top closers. or somewhere in the middle. or maybe you go with the hot one that's been getting lots of save chances lately, regardless of the matchup. also do you keep them for a few days at a time, or repick every day.

I still haven't been able to come up with an answer to those difficult questions.

Looks like picking Sheets was a loser and I compounded the mistake by swapping out Capps for Cordero since I was sure that the Brewers would take out the Pirates.

At least I had V-Mart. I probably would have swapped him out since he was facing Verlander Today but forgot about it. Sometimes, it's better not to overanalyze.

In my roto league, I have Hermidia but didn't move him down because I forgot that he was facing Peavy which worked out in my favor also Today.

I went light on hitters today because I couldn't make up my mind. I went with 6 hitters. The bad news is one of them was Fielder, but I was +6 in games at 1B anyway so it's not that big a loss. The good news is the ones I did go with have been more than adequate with the exception of Sizemore who in hindsight was probably a poor choice for the day anyway.

I didn't look up Sizemore's matchup. That's an interesting note. I honestly haven't looked at individual matchups at all this season. I would drive myself crazy with that many statistics. Perhaps it's the hump I need to get over to move up in the standings or perhaps ignorance is bliss and I should stay the course. Knowing me, I would overthink every decision and the game would be less fun.

There were so many pitchers today I had trouble choosing. I carried Sheets for a couple days for money, but when it came down to it I didn't seriously consider him. I stayed away from Sabathia and Verlander because I wouldn't have known who to pick (it's bad enough I took Sabathia's beating on my 2 roto teams).

After having Young yesterday and Peavy today I'm evn less a San Diego fan than I have ever been, if that was even possible. Worse yet, I double dipped with Hoffman both days and have nothing to show for it.

I hope the rest of the day gets better.

I must be kryptonite to Gregg - since I've dropped him, he's picked up two saves with 4 K's and no hits/walks.

This could have been my first inning:

- A. Iwamura struck out swinging
- C. Crawford struck out swinging
- B. Harris struck out swinging
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

Instead, I went w/ Peavy and Sheets after a great amount of deliberation.

I want to tell myself that my desire to see instant results didn't contribute to Sheets over Penny/Beckett, but there's no doubt that to some degree it did.

I've had s problem all year of having used all my slots before the west coast games even begin, ah well.

Oh and also, FU Gregg.

J - I could be wrong, but I think I saw that to get the upgrade discount for baseball/football, that you needed to do it by July 9th. If you aren't going to do football, then I think it's just $5.95 whenever you do it.

My team score is messed up this morning. Points on the team page don't agree with the daily points on the global league page. Isringhausen is part of the problem, I think. (Not showing the save, as though his game isn't complete.)

I assume I'm not alone?

I hadn't picked up on that, my spreadsheet is at home. I only played 5 hitters yesterday and my games played went from +22 to +25. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that math.

Yesterday was not a good pitching day for me. I was horribly inefficient with SP IP. If it had only been a few IP it wouldn't hurt so bad.

I didn't play any hitters in that DH, because I didn't want to use up 2 position usages, when some players might only start 1 of the games and then pinch hit in the 2nd one. did at least consider Mauer, since he will probably play both games.

Oops

afraid not Chuck, since there were already outs in the inning. but it did make it all the way to where the Chisox just needed to get one more man on base to make it a save situation. too bad. though with everyone and their mother having Nathan, it wouldn't have mattered a whole lot anyway.

Isringhausens save points from Thursday are still not reflected in my team totals. Thursday's player listing has been updated, but the points haven't been included in my YTD team totals. I got an email from RH customer service yesterday saying that the points would be updated in my rankings overnight, but they were not.

My daily point total shown on the roster page is incorrect for both Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, K-Rod's points are left out, even though they appear in the listing. On Friday, Jenks' points are not included in the team total. That error seems to be only cosmetic, as the points included in my YTD totals are OK (except for the Izzy save on Thursday).

Up to 4th in the monthly standings, 3rd in the weekly standings. 140 back from the leader in 1st for the weekly, but 2nd place for the week is definitely possible, need a good day though.

I just noticed that 1st, 2nd, 3rd place for the weekly prizes actually get cash??? Nice!

My pitching didn't help me much yesterday. Shields was my only Win, Haren, Guthrie, Billingsly were my others. Nathan & Jenks didn't help much either. Not sure if it was smart to go with 2 DH closers or not, but oh well.

Re: 121

Guru - I'm also having similar point issues. And because points seem to appear and disappear overnight, it's getting impossible to keep track of what days & players are incorrect. happened again last night, where I somehow lost .61 points off my YTD total. I know that's not a lot, but I'd like to be able to keep accurate daily and YTD point total records, which is becoming increasingly difficult with all the problems they are having.

I think my hitting usage numbers are also still off since Friday. I only played 6 hitters on Thursday, yet my number went up (+3), instead of down (-3). That hasn't been adjusted yet either.

Ender - I think you mentioned the same usage problem from that day. Do you know if that's been fixed on your team ?

I have not personally added up my usage. I can tell you that it did go up after my 5 player day and has remained high. I haven't had time to calculate what it should be per position. It is consistent with the individual numbers that are on moy roster page, I'll give them that much, but I still don't believe they are right.

I was gone for freeze and debated going with a later playing catcher, but decided to just keep VMart. I'm glad I did. I need some help after my horrible showing with SP the last few days.

For some reason I almost used Marcum today only because he can be used in an RP slot, but went with Looper and Carmona instead. So far so good.

VMart left the game early (after hitting a HR though). I went with Mauer today, although, I don't love the matchup against Buehrle (lefty) but I'm really not trying to overanalyze things like that. I may wind up with Russell Martin I think though...

True, Hennessey, after screwing me yesterday, saved me 20 pts tonight.

I think he thinks we're even. Not yet Brad, not yet.

Also, mistakingly starting Zambrano hasn't cost me yet. Though w/ the Boston game in extras and the Fla game still early, much could go wrong. That said, I did have to push Lincecum into my final "P" slot so who knows what I could have come up with there.

[137] - I've had a similar bug for the last 3 days. The pitcher in the second RP slot is being ignored in the points total on my daily roster page. However, the correct points are being included in the YTD standings, so it's only a cosmetic issue at this point.

RH shows Braun is "@Col" after the break. But the @ means that they have a day off, followed by a game vs. Col at Milwaukee. (Using the @ to designate an off day is pretty stupid. Maybe it's shorthand for "@nowhere").

In any event, on the surface, it looks like Braun is at Colorado after the break, which may be supporting his popularity.

But regardless, if he is OUT at a price of $11, there's a problem with the price algorithm.

Re: 149

I thought prices for the Thursday players would go up more. Not only didn't they, but some of them are actually down today. Lots of big name players that are off Thursday are going up instead.

For instance, how can Papelbon be down today, when the Sox are one of the teams playing Thursday ?

But having said that, I still think that the top players with games on Thursday will have decent price gains over the next 3 days. Though from what I'm seeing today, a lot of the gains may not happen until Wednesday & Thursday.

I think a lot of people that are planning on playing RH football will do the special promotion upgrade for $11.95, which gives you the rest of the baseball season, plus the football season. That's what I did, even though the extra $6 for football is pretty much a donation to their site, since I haven't a clue about fantasy football. I believe if you only upgrade for football later after the promotion ends, it will cost you $9.95. So I can see a lot of those people paying the extra $2 to keep premium service for baseball.

I agree - they better have the position usages and scoring ironed out by September or its going to be a mess.

Also, I was thinking about the suspended Yankee game which will be finished in a few weeks. I've got Rivera. If I get to 1300 innings before that game is completed (not going to happen, but hypothetically), what happens? If Rivera pitches an inning and gets the save, do I get the points? Would they subtract the points from my last inning pitched prior to that?

Re: 162, that's what they are doing. Much easier to program I guess.

When I talked to the CEO a couple months ago, he told me the only difference at that time for the premium was that you could see it in real time and that if you hit update you would get the same thing. Obviously they figured out something since then that hurts those that don't pony up. My thought was that I have little if any chance to hit the top 10, so I wasn't going to upgrade unless my team went nuts all of a sudden. Now I'm thinking that if I want to see what's going on at all, I have to ante up.

I wasn't sure I was even going to play football, but if I am, I guess it makes sense to do that one too. I just see a total "Chained-to-the-computer" issue in football--esp with the shorter season. I've lost $200 in the past month (and falling) and there's no way I could sustain anything close to that in football.

I guess the biggest issue I have with the game is the wide-openess of it. There isn't a lot of strategy as far as money-limitations, zero trade-limiations, etc. You just get whoever you want and guess. The only limiation is the sold out feature but the handful of times that does come into play, often there are players out there who are doing as well or better than that particular player. I think I'd be doing much better if there wre more strategy and limitations involved, but who knows. Obviously I can't pick hitters so I may just not be very good!!!

After giving it some thought, I decided I'm not going to pay $15 for what's looking like a bunch of rotohog t-shirts. They are nice though. ;-)

I certainly don't blame those near the top for upgrading and would probably do the same thing.

tried to upgrade to premium and found no option for Canadians. I've won and received a shirt, can't figure out why they would have an option unless it's an issue with credit card payment?? sent email to RH but no response!! Any other northern cousins on here with the same issue ???

Reboot, fixed it. Weird.

Actually the same thing happened to me last night. Was working fine and then all of a sudden couldn't access it anymore. Tried deleting temporary pages and that didn't work, but a reboot did.

Nothing quite like out-thinking yourself. Should have had a great pitching day, but noooo.

Just Bedard here. I thought about double-dipping with Ray, but that hasn't worked for me in a long time so shied against it.

I'm confused. Were Weaver and Sheets pitching today or not? Rotohog and Rototimes both had them going today. Am I dumb?

Re: 175

TJ - I wasn't sure who was starting in 2 or 3 games either. looked at 4 different sources, and 2 of them had weaver & 2 had escobar.

I think it's going to be like this for the next 3 or 4 days as teams adjust their rotations after the all star break.

sure would be nice if there was one definitive source out there that was up-to-date/accurate.

Very nice Species. I should have been there with you but passed on my original plan of both Z and Santana. Had them both on my roster and wound up going with Escobar and Gregg. That didn't work out so well. Didn't really consider Bedard since he had just had the monster game before, but that would have been good too.

Does anyone know what time RH updates their standings? I know they do the pts fairly early on in the overnight but when does the position usage genearlly get updated?

Wow, what an utterly miserable few days. I thought I would have internet access while out of town wed, thurs, & fri, but didn't. Yesterday I had Utley, Braun, Santana, Bedard, and Zambrano on my bench.

Plus now I'm way behind in games played since my roster was mostly bare on Thursday & Friday. Yuck. This might push me far enough out of it to give up!

GP and IP benchmarks are very misleading now.

For hitters, being "on pace" is currently 93 games. However, it looks like most teams have played about 89 games to date. So if a hitter plays every remaining game, you would get about 73 more games out of him. If you add 73 to 93, you end up with only 166 GP, 4 over the limit.

Another way to look at it is that there are 79 calendar days remaining in the season. Ignoring doubleheaders, if you fill a hitter slot every day, you can get all 162 GP as long as you have at least 83 GP to date, with would be currently listed as -10 for that slot.

So teams that are currently listed as being in the range of -36 to -50 (for hitters) are really pretty much on pace. And teams that are at -100 or more can still fill up the GP.

The situation is similar for pitchers. The reported IP for being on pace is 738, but based on the actual schedule, the correct number should be more like 714. And, of course, for pitchers it's even easier to make up shortfalls, although you obviously have to sacrifice some selectivity.

In other words, mrbig, in spite of what RotoHog is reporting for you (-26/-26), your hitting is really slightly ahead of pace, and your pitching is about right on pace. So while I understand your disappointment about the last few days, your pacing is certainly not a problem.

Are RH's numbers for PPG accurate at all? I don't know my numbers but what they're listing seems WAY higher than what ppl have talked about on this board.

They seem reasonably accurate - usually within a few hundredths of what I have.

My stats, sorted by points/game for the full year (for hitters)

I think he's talking about the points per position as shown under the 'my market analysis". Maybe that is what Guru is referring to as well, but I agree that they seem very high. Those averages for the top 100 are about 10pts/position which would seem pretty high.

No, I was simply looking at the individual player averages that appear on each player page.

I don't see anything called "my market analysis". Where is that found?

Re 190:

Looks like it worked out for the best..or at least not for the worst.

I wish Hamels and Vasquez would have disappeared from my roster!

Well, them and my 5 negative hitters.

Kevin Gregg, who I don't have, has outscored my entire offense today. Bogus.

Guru re: 183,

Thanks, but it still doesn't feel good leaving 210 points or so (at 10 pt/ip) on your bench, plus two 30+ pt hitters. Sabathia's results today didn't exactly give me a warm fuzzy feeling either.
