Rick Ankiel has been compared to Roy Hobbs from The Natural, but he is more reminiscent of the protagonist in John R. Tunis' children's baseball books The Kid from Tomkinsville and The Kid Comes Back. Gurupies over 50 probably read these between ages 11-13. No happy ending in either of these novels differentiated them from most children's books. As an aside these books had a prominent place in Phillip Roth's classic, American Pastoral. |

How about Matt Christopher's The Kid Who Only Hit Homers?
And let's not kid ourselves - this is almost exactly what happens in The Natural.

Of all the sensationistic bullcrap I've ever read in my life. The movie is on AMC right now to boot.
