As usual, a little early, but we started kicking it around one day earlier. Started around the first of the year. I propose using the same criteria as last season to help those in RIBC out...
OBP, SLG, R, RBI, SB W, SV, ERA, WHIP, K
Think it was 14 teams, but haven't gone all the way back through to check just yet. For those interested, I'm game when you are. |

Hey all the draft is full and can start now. Lets keep discussion here and picks here.
4 hour time limit per pick, clock running from 8am to 11pm EST sound good (seems to be prett standard from years past). Start the clock on Wednesday officially? Just to give people time to check in and realize we have started (since nobody left an email).

I commished the RIBC AAA International League last year that he was also in. Not as reliable a poster as some, though in his defense he did have some family issues at the time.
None the less, he never communicated on our draft thread even once, timed out at least twice, and never posted one rationale, which is required for AAA.
I just sent a message to his last known email address to see if I can get him going, but we probably shouldn't hold our breath too long.

Lets not start being time nazis off the bat here. Its 1 pick. Its the first day of a mock draft. Give people a chance. We have no clue whats going on in RL from behind the computer screens.
On the same note, at this point I would hope everybody has checked in and can be conscious of the fact that we have started and not give people the chance to be a time-nazi. If you know you will be out for a period of time...just post it. We will understand and you can even leave a que...its a mock.

Are we planning on giving rationales? No biggie, especially since the first 20-25 picks are generally self-explanatory, but didn't know if there was any interest from either those participating or those monitoring what some of us wackos were thinking when we make these picks. (Often find it surprising why there is agreement/disagreement about particular picks personally.)

Another question, since we're not drafting a bench are we limiting ourselves to filling a starting roster? (i.e. not drafting 3 1B, 7 OF, etc.) Personally I think we should just focus on filling a starting roster which will leave some draft worthy players off rosters, but that's just me.

mtb, good point. I guess I felt it was self evident but just to make it very clear we are drafting based on the positions above.
So please check where you intend to place guys. Many (like BJ Upton) have differences in their positions from last year.

Upton appears on the depth chart as an OF, but he played enough games at 2B last year to qualify there for fantasy purposes this year.

Thanks for the heads up CLV. Better progress than I thought on a holiday.
I haven't seen a rationale thread yet, but I think most of my picks speak for themselves. I try not to go for the scarcity picks too early, but Utley and Jeter were just sitting there and both do it all - walk, steal bases, hit for power, score runs, stay pretty healthy. If you're going to get some scarcity, they're two of the best.
At that point, I was free to choose any position. Once Peavy and Santana were off the board, I knew I'd be looking at a hitter. It came down to Adam Dunn or Travis Hafner. Hafner would have been a fine pick, but Dunn has the youth and the upside. Especially in a league that counts OBP.
After that, I expected the closer run to be in full effect. I got the two guys I wanted, K-Rod and Billy Wagner, but honestly, there are still a lot of closers around. I know I'm avoiding other positions a bit, but I really feel like I have a solid foundation for my pitching at this point.

BH: I had pretty much the same thought process as you. I started w/ a well rounded, 5 category player in Hanley Ramirez. When it came back to me the next round, there was another 30/30 guy staring me in the face AND Brandon Phillips happened to be at a scarce position. Though I don't expect 30/30 this year from him, 25/25/100 runs is reasonable. AFter that, I needed a guy who could help prop up my OBP and would help an already solid Slg. Carlos Pena seems to fit the bill.
Round 4 I figured I'd better get a good starter under my belt. I had Beckett qued up, but he got taken. Daisuke should give a good start on K's and help era/whip and runs. Finally I had planned on a closer in this spot (regardless of the closer run which I inadvertently contributed to). I rarely take a closer this early, but was really hurt by a lack of saves last year in RIBC so I figured Mariano Rivera would fill in nicely since the other 2 closers I wanted went shortly before my pick.

I was NOT going to take a pitcher with this pick. But when I saw Halladay still available this late (end of round 6 in a 15 team draft?) I couldn't resist. I like the way my team is shaping up and almost wish this were really an RIBC draft at this point.

Some good recent picks, by the way. I was noticing that Tejada and Helton were still around, and Konerko isn't a bad pick either. But I'm happy to have Myers. With Myers, Lackey, K-Rod, and Wagner, my squad has a great pitching core.

I had Tejada set for that round (have been watching him since round 3 to see where he would fall) and just noticed Konerko was still there.
Its just odd to see some of these names going so late. Yeah, they are all getting a bit older, but a lot of recent picks have been staple early rounders for years.

Just and FYI, if you hold down Ctrl and F on your keyboard a search mechanism will pop up. You can type in the name of a player to see if he's been drafted. I'm sure some of you know this, but just in case you didn't it's a very useful little tool.

Clock doesn't run on weekends so he hasn't actually timed out. A couple of thoughts on this:
A) taking the manager into account, Wiggs is a very active and usually very attentive manager. On one hand I'm willing to say give him the benefit of the doubt and wait
B) On the other hand, Wiggs is a very active and very attentive manager. He picked one duplicate (Uggla) once and then picked another duplicate. He does know better. Its not like he was MIA. He made a pick, not once but twice so he was around.
C) It is a mock draft. There is actually nothing on the line here. Nothing to lose and nothing to gain. If we move on, what harm is there REALLY being done?
Since it is a mock, I say move on so we can continue to see how picks and players develop. Wiggs is more than capable of making a well-informed late pick. This is practice after all. :)

Yeah, Wiggs' situation is different than being MIA. Boneheaded, sure, but not nearly as bad as not being around. In fact, it's a good thing that we now have something to give him a hard time about.
Between picking Myers and Cain, all of my queue went - Konerko, Tejada, Lidge, Soriano, and Sheffield. Still, my pitching is in good shape at the moment. Just need some more hitting.

In Fosten's defense (since apparently I still like Fosten), the only round I officially timed out on was round 2 and that's only because it took you guys 2 days to get back around to me from round 1.
Average speed of pick (in hrs) Rd1: 5 (Draft hadnt officially begun) Rd2: 6 (My Grandmother was sick) Rd3: 0.5 Rd4: 4 (Weekend) Rd5: 1 Rd6: 3 (I was awake the night before and you all went to bed) Rd7: 0.5 Rd8: 1.5 Rd9: 1
So, my response time, while not impeccable has been fairly good overall. Now, give me a cookie. I'm not the bad person they make me out to be in the media. I take care of my Grandmother everyday and she has her ups and downs. I just got a new laptop so I will be able to post on the forums more often. Sorry for any inconviences I have caused. I will try my best to keep abreast of the mock competition in this draft.
Which, to all your benefit, also means that I will get to exchange more pleasantries such as: Watch out for Munson Mock Mobsters this year (and also our farm affiliate the Munson Rock Lobsters)... Santana, Sizemore, Morneau, Lee, Kazmir, Oswalt, Cordero, Gordon, and JJHardy? Heck, I'd pay with my own plasma to watch these superheroes take the field. Which good players do you gentleman want to give me next? Thanks to all my fans!!
Sincerely all, thanks for including me in the community and letting me play. I enjoy all of you. Peace and good luck.

Congrats to those who got some Tigers on their team. They even scared Johan out of the division. I got 2 and wish I could have got at least 5.
Haren should have no problem fitting in behind Webb in Arizona. He fits in very nicely as my mock ace.
How did Manny fall to the 3rd round?
Martin, Weeks, Gonzalez, and Victorino are all not far from hitting their primes. Being in a lineup with Manny, Cabrera and Guillen should help.
AJ Burnett is the high risk pick to join Haren on the staff, but with Capps handing the ball over to Papelbon, we should be able to manage by filling the staff with sleepers.

Even when he was good, Jones didn't walk enough to be a high pick. Plus he plays the outfield, where there are plentiful options in a league like this. He's a year older and coming off his worst season, going to a pitchers' park where he'll be pushed by kids who really deserve to play and won't be fighting for a contract.
Not exactly the kind of player I'm looking for in a league like this.

BH - Generally I agree with you on Andruw. He was a third rounder the last two years in the RIBC's I was involved in - pretty high too. My comment was more based on his fall than his ability to potentially hit 50 dingers again (doubtful) and post an OPS over .9 (very doubtful).

Update to my team w/ only a few rounds to go:
C: - 1st: Carlos Pena 2nd: Brandon Phillips SS: Hanley Ramirez 3rd: Hank Blalock OF: Vernon Wells OF: Ken Griffey Jr OF: JD Drew Util: Aaron Hill CI: Paul Konerko MI: Dustin Pedroia SP: Daisuke Matzusake RP: Mariano Rivera P: Roy Halladay P: Jason Isringhausen P: Kelvim Escobar P: -
Waiting on 2 more players and I know who I'd like. But I feel overall, I'd gladly take this team into a real league.
I have phenomenal MI depth in a very deep league which means if push comes to shove, I should have a lot of trade options to fill any deficiencies that pop up.
Barring that, with Hanley Ramirez, Brandon Phillips, and Aaron Hill I should be middle to high end of the pack in SB.
With Konerko, Pena, Ramirez, Phillips, Griffey, Drew and Blalock I should be very tough in Slg. Plenty of guys to score runs and drive them in. Though this team is admittedly weak in OBP.
My pitching should keep me very strong in ERA, K's and W's but I will probably struggle for middle of the pack in Whip. And with 2 solid closers so far I should be able to stay middle of the pack in saves as well.
I may have some OF concerns as I just realized all 3 of my OF are probably boom or bust types. They'll either produce great results or be injured and give me crap. Guess that MI core would probably break up around the All-star break.

Yeah so it's not a great team but I can't say I did alot of work on drafting it. I drafted almost entirely from memory until the last few rounds. It's solid in the percentages but the totals would probably be lacking. I was going for the all NL West pitching staff as well. Heck I dunno, it might be better than my team from last year which ended up 8th in AA.

Dont worry bh, I assumed that there was still another round left too, so I am without a catcher. The confusion between 17 and 18 rounds came from conflicting reports on whether we were carrying 4 P or 5 P. That's ok though, for the Munson Mock Mobsters, all's well that ends with Austin Kearns.
Thanks everybody. I enjoyed doing the mock draft. It helped me put on my mock thinking cap so I could get my mock brain started for this season. You folks made me happy on days that I was sad. Thanks to all and peace!

Wow, nice finish. How did that happen? Considering my 3rd baseman spent most of the season on the DL. My second baseman missed the last month of the season. My util slot missed over half the season, one of my OF missed most of the season and another OF missed the last month. A SP who didn't even pitch and a closer who lost his job.
That was definitely an interesting league. Hope we do it again next year.
