Draft Recap
Draft Discussion
Pre-season Discussion
Waivers have been turned on. All teams are compliant. Order is set to the same base order of the S-Draft. You may pick up players right away but they will be on Waivers until sometime after midnight on early Thursday morning (one full day + on WW).
The season starts today. Lineups due prior to 30 mins. before first game each day. |

To comment on PD's post in a prior thread. Three teams were flagged as illegal. I made bj's compliant. PD and Cards are flagged as they are short players from the draft. PD is short two and Cards is short one player. These teams are still legal and will still score points.
Officially your team must have 21-23 players--though it's flagged under 23 because some teams had under 23 in years past the whole season and didn't know it. We get a notice of all "illegal" teams and we ignore the ones who are officially legal and allow them to score points.

Don't be too bitter. Wood fell to you and I got a MR with my 1st. Still think Marmol is the better closer, but he's gotta get the opps or it's irrelavent.

Interested in Wood for Marmol? This isn't an offer, but I'm curious.
Marmol is supposedly the eventual closer. Saw Marmol pitch this week and he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Had a question about the Maybin drop.
Maybin is a prospect. He has been sent down. He has a salary. Don't pick him up or lose your waiver priority position for nothing.
When looking at a player, make sure to check the salary before picking htem up. Anyone who has a Salary of 1 is a prospect.

Can't waiver position be manually reset if we make such an error, I think I have accidentally added a player once a year not thinking he was a prospect and missing the $1, and could see it happening to someone else. To lose waiver position could be a big blow, I know Yahoo has the tools to recent waiver position for these errors, does CBS not?

Was reading the draft recaps. Some pretty interesting insights there. Thanks for participating.
Was reading darky's and I was feeling how much I would hate to have to rebuild so long. But I've had to do it in Hoops as my initial draft and teh ability to trade our first year was overstated IMM and I finally hit top 5 last year and was in position to win this year before injuries destroyed me. Still, all the hard work is really rewarding when it pays off and a lot of that is taking chances and getting lucky. I like to think that you make your own luck but we all know that's not entirely true.
What I do know is that Twarpy and Species both had horrible teams that they rebuilt (twarpy more than once) and look where they are now--perennial powerhouses. So more power to those teams!!!

I just checked CBS for my last question on lineup freeze coding a couple weeks ago...
Response (Corey P.) 03/13/2008 03:25 PM I apologize, but unfortunately at this time that can't be changed. I will forward this to our programmers for future consideration, but at this time that is the best I can do. Customer 03/12/2008 03:56 PM One of the big issues with CBS baseball is the lineup deadline for daily lineup leagues. Currently it is 30 mins before the FIRST game of the day. Most sites allow changes up until 5 mins before the scheduled gametime. Even 10 would work. But it needs to be before each scheduled game, not the first game of the day. You have this coded in for football, why can't baseball be the same? It's tough for a Cubs game or the Red Sox Patriot game early deadline and then we have a west coast game that starts 9 or 10 hours later. Can you help or please explain why you can't or don't? Thanks!

Re: 17. I know of a site where you can have variable locktime. Either at the start of the day or at gametime (and not 30 minutes before gametime either).
And the keeper functionality (including trading picks) is much smoother.
And oh yeah, it's free.

We had searched every single year for a different site. No one else afforded some things we needed. Prospects is a big issue as well. But for what we're being charged at CBS, I think it's a shame they can't "fix" a couple things that seem so obvious. Other than that, CBS has been very good at most of the things they do. ESPN has been improving as well. I really like Yahoo! and if they are starting to step up, then they could be an option again (though live scoring puts them at about the same price as CBS).
So I guess we can look to see what those sites do for next year and act appropriately. We know what we're getting from CBS and we know we can make it work for us. If the other sites also work and make them more user-friendly then I'm all for it. I will say that I absolutely hate Yahoo! making you have to wait a day to use a player you pickup, but it is what it is.

One thing CBS for us that will likely be impossible for other sites to do is our league history. Always fun to be able to go back and see who finished where, or even who was in our league years ago.
Ref, 26: I agree on the Yahoo thing, probably the biggest annoyance amongst all the sites. Its 8 AM, I find out my 2B is hurt, I pickup a ww replacement... and I can't use him today? Pure nonsense.
On the team front, looks like I'm a walking (crawling?) hospital again this year. Sheff and Slowey added to Granderson, El Duque, Hill and Schilling. A couple of those were willing draft picks, but the two hitters hurt. :(

Here's a good one. I think it happened last Friday in the BAL-SEA game. I don't know all the details, but this is what the Mariner radio guy was saying.
Brian Roberts was "thrown out for the cycle". He was thrown out at first, and second, at third, and at home in the same game.

How did he get "thrown out" at first? a pickoff? or are they just counting a normal SS-->1B groundout?
Thats crazy on the other ones, must have been swinging the bat pretty well to get that many extra base opps.

Now that GO made me look, I guess that the M's announcers weren't quite correct. It was the Sat. game.
1st inning - Roberts grounded out to pitcher. (thrown out at 1B) 3rd inning - Roberts walked. Roberts stole second. Roberts caught stealing, catcher to third (thrown out at 3B) 5th inning - Roberts grounded out to second. 6th inning - Roberts doubled to center. Roberts out at home on Green's throwing error (thrown out at home) 8th inning - Roberts walked. Roberts stole second, Roberts to third on Lopez's throwing error. Markakis grounded into fielder's choice to pitcher, Roberts out at home (thrown out at home)
So I guess he wasn't thrown out at 2B ... but was thrown out at home twice. Still kind of unusual!

I'd love to trashtalk BH's team but since I lack CBS access that is impossible as usual. I don't know what the hell I'm gonna do when my team moves into contention next season and I can't set last minute lineups, scan free agents, look for trades etc. The points I'm just throwing away will actually matter next year. Need to get an iPhone then I guess but that'll be awafully difficult to afford right before a wedding.

Ya know... "this guy is playing over his head", or "that guy sucks, you got lucky", or "I wish I had that guy" etc. I'm actually on pace to finish 700 innings below my pitching max, so my position right now isn't all that relevant (at least my pitching point totals). I'll be streaming some in second half of the season to boost my W's and K's. And my hitting half is pretty good. I'm happy there, just wish I had one more big RBI bat cause thats where I am lagging.
Doesn't ESPN actually have its own phone?

If this crap happens, what you need to do is post on here, or on our bbs or email all the commishs. State the exact move you want (activate or bench) and we will use the time stamp as our guide and we can manually fix lineups retroactively. I wish I had done this but I checked in later and just assumed there was a "patriot-like" early game. I didn't even have time to check on my TSN team.

I just looked at Pete's team. He obviously wanted CC in his lineup tonight. Luckily, since he didn't say who he wanted out, there is a SP not going tonight which gives him an obvious bench guy. So, I am allowing CC to replace him in the lineup tonight. Now don't get mad at me if CC gets shelled!!! ;)

So how in the world is my team of schwag in fourth place?
* I only have 1 player in the current rotowire top-58 (Carlos Lee at #15) * I only had 8 legitimate keepers IMO * Lackey's been out all season and Bedard went on the DL * I have no closers * I barely have a 3B (Jose Bautista) * My round 1 pick (Fields) is in the minors * My round 2 pick (Soto) was openly ridiculed by Ref during the draft * My round 3 pick (FLopez) was a bencher the first 2.5 weeks
So now I need to decide if I'm actually a player, or merely surfing the wave named 'Cliff Lee'. If I think I have a chance to hang near the top all year I'll need a 3B and closer, and pretty quickly. But if I'm all smoke-and-mirrors, I should just enjoy the view while I can, and start planning for 2009 (like I thought I would be doing). I need Jobu to give me a sign.

Not to beat a dead horse...but I will anyhow...I had planned to callup Hochevar for today's game but the darn lineups had locked. I go and lookup what time the games started and it appears they had JUST locked. This half hour time is bad but not being able to change lineups for indiviudal games is wearing on me even more this year than most. BH set us up a team in ESPN and a few of us are looking at what needs added. Their programmer is also in the league to see if he can get the stuff we need incorporated before next year.

Species passed me. and now this... you should all be afraid!!!
TAMPA, Fla. -- Alex Rodriguez took 57 swings in batting practice and fielded 31 grounders at third base during his first injury rehabilitation workout Friday at the New York Yankees' minor league complex. Rodriguez is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps. The three-time AL MVP, who resumed on-field workouts Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, could rejoin the team late next week. A-Rod hit several long homers, including a pair that went over the center-field back drop. He also ran in the outfield. Rodriguez said the session went "good" and gave a thumb's up as left the field for the clubhouse.

Well, I agree that I overpaid for Soria, but I didn't see any other option at that point. I had to have saves and they were a limited resource (though if I had known Smoltz was going to be switched to closer I may have passed). But Vaz? Pete said he knew he was getting hosed going in but heck with it. Granted Vaz isn't chicken feed, but stats from his position are more easily accumulated and he even paid more than I did for Soria.
I am definitely not thinking of voting against it. Pete obviously knows what he's getting into. I am just surprised bh continues to get so much out of these guys. And you thought it was hard to deal with bh before....!!!! ;)

Jon Rauch is officially on the block.
I do see Pete's point of view. Vazquez is far more valuable than say, Oliver Perez, because he's at a quality that you can't get off the waiver wire. There is no waiver pitcher that's going to do what Vaz can do, leading the league in strikeouts and have his consistency.
Pete's taken a good team and made it better without sacrificing any current players, and when the season's over he can trade Vazquez to a rebuilding team for a draft pick. Possibly even my team.

Here's my take on the trade. I am weak in ERA, WHIP, and Wins. Insert Vazquez and all 3 should get a nice boost. I also get an extra boost in Ks. The prospect pick doesn't mean much at all to me. Yes a 1st and a 3rd is alot to give, but those are the chances you have to take sometimes. Here's to a no hitter tomorrow for Javy. ;-)

No question Bay's had a good year and is back on track to where we thought he'd be a couple years back. I had him in RIBC last year and he had a terrible first half. But he always walked, so you had to figure he'd get some of the value back.

Thanks for the help.
Dunn, Hamilton, Bruce would have been amazing; however, I've seen enough of Volquez to believe he's not pitching over his head - he's a #1 starter. He's gamer and has been helped a lot by work with Mario Soto on his change.
With Cueto and Bailey, and a still relatively young Harang, the Reds have the making of an effective staff for the first time since 1990. They still have acouple of guys pitching in the minors and a couple of hitters that will be in the majors very soon and are + players. I look with hope to 2009.
I was disapointed to see Bruce make an out tonight. There was a poll on a Cinci radio station as to whether be retired. Votes were pretty even.

I'd like to send down Reynolds please.
Of course Volquez is pitching over his head, he has a 1.31 ERA! But he's been very very good, he's a potential ace, and Cincy definitely needed a solid #1/#2 SP more then they needed a big OF bat, even one who has been as good as Hamilton. In the end, that trade is looking like a solid deal for both teams, though Texas needs SP's just as badly...

Texas has bats worth playing - guys like Botts, Boggs, etc. They even felt Mench could be let go. Volquez would have helped them much more than Hamilton.

You're probably better off talking up Lewis' .362 on-base percentage, which is a category that counts in this league. Wilkerson's definitely not at that level for the season, although he appears to be hitting well lately.
Why would you want to ditch Lewis anyway? He's having a pretty good year. I'd imagine he'd be helpful to someone. Carlos Ruiz, on the other hand...

Yeah, Fred Lewis has been a nice find. A little pop, a little speed. With some of the OF that are starting for the contenders, some of them would be well served to throw me a mid-round pick for his services. Or make me an offer for Bay and then I could look into keeping Lewis myself.
Yeah this Ruiz character has been underwhelming, someone needs to take out his platoon... but my hitting hasn't really been the problem. I got a good numbers over there. Its the pitching thats been brutal outside of Dice-K. I'd probably package Bay and Bucholz for a good young keeper level SP. I can't believe I wouldn't get an offer for that combination of production and potential.

bmd, this is two very different things.
I said, hey I've got this guy who is a keeper who I can trade. RSF then came in and said he was horrible, etc. (before later coming on and said he didn't realize his stats were as high as they were).
BH, has been picking guys off FA wire and immediately wanting draft picks for them. And some he wants "premium" picks.
For instance, I drop Hannahan. Then he picks him up and wants to trade him to me for a premium pick. He's done the same with Wilky, Kent, etc. Now he might strike gold once in awhile and more power to him if he does. I just find it funny that it happens so often. Now if someone thinks they can use one of those guys, then cool. But I didn't pick up JT and say hey I have a guy I just picked off FA because no one wanted him and you cna have him for a midlevel or premium pick.
Maybe you don't see the difference and if you don't, then we're going ot have to agree to disagree.

Yeah, those two were different I'd agree. RSF was essentially "that guys sucks, why would anyone waste a pick on him" and this was more commentary on BH's strategy and timing.

There's no difference. Tinsley sucks and so do the guys bh is pimping. rsf made a post about how bad he thought Tinsley was and explained reasons. You made a post about how bh's guys were just fa's.
Managers in all the G20 leagues make bad trades. It sucks but there's really nothing that can be done about it. I think calling out other managers "pimping" is fine since it might prevent some bad trades from going down. I'm sure there's tons of bashing done through AIM. I think this is a better medium since the "pimps" can defend why the player that "Mr C-block" say sucks is better than what Mr. C-block thinks.

Ref is way off anyway. I would pick up guys off of the FA wire at the start of the hot streak, let them ferment a little and establish themselves as more than a fluke, before pawning them off for pick upgrades or prospect picks. Get your story straight! ;-)
My favorite was Gary Matthews Jr. as a total throw-in on a trade with Tosh (i.e. - he was the player Tosh was going to drop in our trade). He got hot all of a sudden in TEX and I got a prospect pick out of it :)

I continue to add Matthews on a couple teams every year just hoping he'll get hot again. It's been a lot of bitter disappointment.
I've been able to sign fill-in closers off the FA wire and trade them away fairly quickly ... but I don't think I've ever been able to pull it off with a hitter. There just aren't many good hitters left on the wire.

Ya see, Species. when you got Matthews he had no perceived balue, but suddenly he got hot. I got Willis and dropped him before he got hot and became a keeper. Tosh and my comments were based on him picking guys up and IMMEDIATELY offering them for midlevel and premium picks. It may work out they get hot and he can get something out of him. I got Hafner off the FA wire. Many other nuggets have and will continue to be found there.
I consider myself t be good friendw ith Species and BH and we give each other a lot of good-natured ribbing both on here and privately. It's all good. I also like bmd very much. Just because we disagree on what he perceives something to be the same thing doesn't offend me. Perception=reality. I really don't think my comments were off-base at all, but like I said, let's agree to disagree and move on. Btw, I also consider RSF a friend and don't think he did anything intentionally malicious.

I agree with everything you said. I am a bad person and should be punished. Except one thing.
Ref, you're an idiot for dropping Hannahan. Because he's actually good. He's 2nd on my team in walks right now. If he can bat .260, he'll be a plus player. And you need a third baseman, right?
Actually, I'm content to let Great One bash my players. First he bashes Joe Mauer for not hitting any homers and he hits two in three days. And tonight, Wilkerson stole a base.
Hot naked chicks don't just fall out of the sky. And man does Jeff Kent suck.

Without looking... I want to say Dogma and a naked Chris Rock falling.
Yeah, BH - I'm playing in H2H league where my opponent has Mauer, great timing to finally wake up.

If you couldn't find players on the FA wire who can get hot, there wouldn't be so many add/drops. Can always find a nugget or two.

I'm looking to trade a starting pitcher. There are two tiers to choose from. I seek to add a young keeper-level hitter (non-OF).
Tier 1 - possible 2009 keepers Jeff Francis (2-5, 5.53, 1.52, 7.1 k/9) Andrew Miller (4-4, 5.37, 1.66, 7.1 k/9) Cliff Lee (9-1, 2.45, 1.04, 7.6 k/9) Joe Saunders (9-2, 2.63, 1.09, 4.3 k/9)
Tier 2 - obvious 2009 keepers Erik Bedard (4-4, 4.47, 1.33, 7.9 k/9) John Lackey (1-1, 1.80, 1.03, 6.0 k/9) Roy Halladay (7-5, 2.94, 1.00, 7.0 k/9)

Re 162
YOu'd think that at least some of these guys coudl at least crack your starting lineup lol!!!
I just saw Kent get ejected. Horrible called 3rd strike by the ump. There may have been slight contact, but if anything, the ump initiated it. I will say thta the unp gave him every possible chance to go out to his position and Kent flat out refused.

I actually had this que'd up 2 hours and 31 minutes ago... but had to reset when I forgot to post.
Barfield is available for a mid-round draft pick. Who wants a sweet swinging young 2B with a ton of upside!?!

I had the bright idea to start Hawpe over Murphy this morning. That move costs me 2 HRs and 5 RBIs. Now I read Soriano breaks his hand. Unreal night.
