Subject: Trivia Is Back

  Posted by: barilko6 - [3732117] Wed, Apr 16, 2008, 15:40

Alright...time to get the baseball trivia back on the board!

The first question is tough, hopefully ungooglable! I will give hints if its too hard

Luiz Gonzalez was the first major league ball player to accomplish this unique feat. It involved Arizona and San Francisco.

What was the accomplishment?

my Google Crystal Ball says that it has something to do with water and 2 homers:

Luis Gonzalez became the first player to hit a homerun into two bodies of water. On this day he hit a homer into McCovey Cove in San Francisco. In April of 2000 he hit one into the pool in Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix.

Man, its tough to come up with ungooglable questions, but here is question 2:

What two somewhat related shared distinctions are the Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies the only 2 teams to hold?

I have no clue, my first and last try for today:
Astros (2005) and Rockies (2007) are the only 2 wild card teams to reach the World Series only once and got swept 4-0. both are NL teams.

Kinda got half of it there:

Rockies and Astros are the only two teams to participate in a World Series and not win a game.

There is one more pretty cool link between the two teams, and it is also World Series related.

Got it! That was hard for me to believe. That means that all of the other National League teams that have ever made it to the World Series have played the Yankees at least once.

Let me come up with a new question...

What player, since 1920, has won the most World Series while never playing a game for the New York Yankees?

Podres didn't play in the World Series in 1965, so I guess I might have to change my question to: What player played in and won the most W.S. championships without ever playing with the Yanks.

Podres was on the Dodgers, but didn't play in 1965 World Series for one reason or another.

Side note to this trivia. Anyone played the Buzz! Trivia series of games? There is a new version coming out for PS3 in the next couple months. Supposedly in this version you can play against other people online and write your own questions, so we could in theory stage a real game show style trivia night and wouldn't have to worry about people using google or whatever.

Crap, I thought that might take a little longer. lol

Ok, here is a good one:

Since 1957, when detailed box scores started being kept, Sam McDowell is one of two players in the history of MLB to accomplish this very rare feat. It has nothing to do with his pitching prowess, as the other player was a first baseman.

If I gave the name of the second player, it would be too easy to google.

I will answer questions and give hints as it goes on.

The correct answer:

Sam McDowell and George Crowe are the only two left handed players to record outs at second base.

McDowell had been placed there while the infield was shifted so that he could go back and pitch to the next batter, while Crowe was also there as a result of a switch.

While I understand that 3rd, SS, and 2nd are right handed positions, its pretty amazing to me that since they have been keeping records on this since 1957 that there have been only 2 putouts recorded at second base by left handed fielders.

For the infield, arm strength is all about throwing across your body, making right handed fielders on second, third, and SS.

Case in point- Hank Blalock: hits left, throws right.

A lefthand thrower has to turn their back to homeplate to get into position to throw to firstbase. That extra turn can be the difference between safe and out.

And especially the second baseman. You have to be facing the SS to take the double play toss, and if you were a lefty you would have to do a complete turn to get the ball back over to first.

Actually, not to give away trade secrets, but I live in the Midwest and work with a bunch of psychotic Cubs fans. When conversations of "my-team-is-better-than-your-team" (fascinating conversations btw!) happen once in a while, this subject came up once and it just stuck in my head.

Ok, so I am guessing LaRussa was the second base playing current manager.

Which means it involves the Cardinals? And that makes me wonder if it has something to do with "Cardinal" and "Pope" and the Chicago Cubs? (Because of the Holy Cow.)

Which means I am guessing that Haray couldn't say Holy Cow during the game because of the Pope?

That is a looooong shot guess way out of left field line of reasoning...lol

Both New York teams playing in Windy City on Tuesday
Anthony DiComo / MLB.com
04/21/2008 9:45 AM ET
CHICAGO -- They usually avoid each other without even trying, these Yankees and Mets do, one skipping town just as the other rolls in. That's how Major League Baseball likes it, and that's how New York's thousands of commuters expect it. If the George Washington Bridge is snarled, maybe -- just maybe -- another might stay empty.
Baseball, however, is not without its peculiarities -- the game thrives on them, really -- and schedules aren't immune to those quirks. So if the Yankees decide to stroll down Michigan Ave. on Tuesday, they might just run into an unfamiliar sight: the Mets.

Both New York teams will play in Chicago on Tuesday, those Mets facing the Cubs in a Wrigley matinee and the Yankees taking on the White Sox at night. It's the first time in more than 11 years that two teams from one city have played in another metropolitan area on the same date, and the first time in 28 years that the quirk has involved Chicago.

The baseball oddity, according to Katy Feeney, Major League's senior vice president of scheduling, may have started with the Pope, whose appearance in the Bronx on Sunday forced the Yankees to play on the road. One small change can have a ripple effect on the entire schedule -- "nothing is just a one-team issue," Feeney said -- and this one may just have felled enough dominoes to thrust Chicago into this New York state of mind.

After all, as Yankees manager Joe Girardi noted last week, "Who's going to argue with the Pope?"

Catholicism aside, this quirk last happened back in 1997, when the Dodgers played at Shea Stadium and the Angels came to Yankee Stadium on an otherwise idle Tuesday -- just like this one. Those games both took place at night, with Lance Johnson driving in four runs to lead the Mets to a 5-0 victory in Queens, and Jim Leyritz capping a ninth-inning rally with a two-run double to lead his Angels over the Yankees in the Bronx.

Seventeen years earlier, the Yankees and Mets both played afternoon games in Chicago.

Hmm well Ive been recording everything Braves since 1995 so this wasnt Googled:

On JULY 2nd, 1999 the Braves beat the Mets for the most lopsided shutout in MLB history, 16-0. Chipper hit 2 HR that day.

The next day, July 3rd, 1999, the Braves beat the Mets 3-0, making it back to back shutouts. The Braves finished their first half that day going 50-31. (ahh those were the days).

That is probably not the answer but it's interesting nonetheless.

I'll take a stab and say most shutouts in a single day?

I will guess and say Ken Griffey.

I have seen one unassisted triple play live - last year Braves at Rockies, Tulo had one. Furcal also had one for the Braves several years ago. It is a very simple play really. It doesn't look like much. It's just that you have to have the perfect situation to get it.

He had 3 hits one of them a triple.
As a sox fan and Jon Valentin fan I remember listening to that game and vaguely recall the red sox announcers saying it was the debut of the Mariners "highly touted rookie"

For what it's worth, if Marco Scutaro made any effort to run back to 1st after Cabrera's diving catch, it most likely would not have been unassisted. So, I'd give Scutaro the "assist" on Cabrera's unassisted triple play.

Here's a question: How would it be possible for a pitcher to throw a perfect game even if his team makes an error?

An error can be issued to a fielder who muffs a foul ball, so provided the batter was then retired after said foul ball, a perfect game would still be intact

How can a pitcher get 5 strikeouts (or more) in a single inning?

Multiple dropped third strikes with batter reaching 1B before catcher recovers to record the put-out. Each time it happens the runner would need to advance to 2B (or further)so 1B would be unoccupied for the next batter to attempt to take 1B.

I just figured out this one. Runner on base is picked off in the top of the ninth inning of a tie game for the third out. Home team scores in bottom of ninth (or extra inning scenario.)

Four teams in Major League Baseball have not had a pitcher toss a no-hitter. Who are they?

The team that has been in the league the longest without a no-hitter is the New York Mets, who began play in 1962. Mets' pitchers have thrown 30 one-hitters, and ten pitchers that have played for the Mets have thrown no-hitters for other teams. Nolan Ryan, traded from the Mets after the 1971 season, threw seven no-hitters with all of the three other teams he pitched for over his 27-year career. Seaver threw five one-hitters with the Mets, including three that were no-hitters broken up in the 9th inning. He would finally toss his lone career no-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds after being traded from Queens on June 16, 1978. Perhaps as painful, two Mets stars during the 1980s would throw no-hitters for the cross-town New York Yankees in the twilight of their careers: Dwight (Doc) Gooden on May 14, 1996, and David Cone (a perfect game) on July 18, 1999. Hideo Nomo, who played for the Mets during the 1998 season, holds the distinction of throwing no-hitters before and after leaving the Mets, throwing no-hitters on September 17, 1996 (for the Los Angeles Dodgers) and April 4, 2001 (for the Boston Red Sox).

I doesn't really matter if the team is home or road, if a pitcher comes in with a runner on first and two outs, picks off said runner, and his team scores in the succeeding half inning to take the lead for good, that pitcher will get the win without throwing a pitch.

edit: I had just asked the question that JeffG had answered above.

I think it is impossible for a pitcher to get a loss without throwing a pitch since he would not be responsible for the person scoring the winning run getting on base, but found a case where a pitcher came in and immediately balked home the winning run without throwing a pitch. Todd Fischer holds that distinction. Happend July 10 1986. game log

Well ... It's been a week. I might as well answer the questions.

Of the teams that have achieved no-hitters, the longest current "drought" belongs to?
Chicago Cubs - Milt Pappas pitched the last one, on September 2, 1972.
(The Cubs clustered four of them from three pitchers during 1969-1972)

Which team has the longest current streak of escaping being no-hit?
Chicago Cubs - Were last victims of a no-hitter at the hand of Sandy Koufax's perfect game on September 9, 1965

Addl' Note - The team escaping being no-hit for the longest time was the New York Yankees, from September 20, 1958 to June 11, 2003, a span of almost 45 years.
