Time to start thinking about fantasy baseball.
Year number 7! of the Lucky 13 league.
Last years managers: great one chicagotrs barilko6 wiggs toral wolfer art for the hall wazaaap_guy jackhammers Pancho Villa sR robJ slizz
I will send out an email to everyone in the next couple days to gage interest. Check in here if you are definitely in or out for this season. I also need to look over last years rosters and figure out which players are keeper eligible.
I figure we will get started with the draft either 2/16 or 2/23. Hopefully we will be able to use Kafenatid again this year as it really makes managing the draft smoother. |

Hopefully the Salami Farts can do a little better after a year of seasoning! Man do i wish we waited 1 more week for my Rays to call up Price...I would be able to have him as my farmer guy for this season and next!!! Anyhow, I have a couple guys that could be keepers on another squad as my guy is Lastings Milledge unless you blow me away with an offer for him. Potential guys (off the top of my head): Justin "Mr. Irrelevant" Duchscherer - will benefit from pitching in Oakland and can produce a top 20 pitching statline. George Sherrill - Racks up them Saves and for the first half of the season singlehandedly kept me in the hunt in that category. Yunel Escobar - Solid all around, plus has 2B/SS/3B Eligibility. Jonathan Broxton - His track record speaks for itself... and Lastings Milledge - I think he is Alex Rios with some power...

I am in as well.
Slizz, I think we have a rule where the late round keepers can only be traded for late round keepers, no picks allowed. Someone might want to confirm that.
I will be keeping Geo Soto!

The rule with keepers is they needed to be on your roster at the end of last season. No offseason trades.

Can't beat Slizz's trio, thats for damn sure. My late round keeper option is Joey Votto I guess. Don't have a farmer hitter, and have Johnny Cueto as farmer pitcher.

The player must have been drafted by a team in the previous draft between rounds 14-27 and never been released as a free agent. The player must be on your roster by the trading deadline and on the end season roster. Keeper eligible players retain their keeper status when traded. Keepers can only be kept for one year.

Please look over the rules...anyone propose any changes to the current set of rules?
Lucky 13 Fantasy Baseball Rules
Basics: Season Full Season Slow draft via message board or Kafenatid 13 teams 26 players on a team +2 farmers Positions C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, (3)OF, IF, Util 15 games to qualify at a position (Yahoo! rule) 162 games maximum per position Pitching (8) Pitching slots any combination of starters/relievers. Bench 8 players (any combination hitters/pitchers) DL 2 players maximum 5x5 Categories R, RBI, HR, SB, OBP W, Saves, SO, ERA, WHIP Maximum 1300 innings Minimum 900 innings if the minimum innings are not met the team will receive only 1 point in ERA/WHIP categories. This does not effect other managers points. Roster Changes Daily Unlimited Moves Waiver Time 2 days Waiver initial order is reverse of draft order Retroactive Stats No Unlimited Trades Trade Deadline TBD on what Yahoo allows, will be the second to last date Yahoo allows. Trade Reject time 2 days The trade reject time can be waived if both trading managers request the waiver and the commissioner judges the trade as no chance of veto. Any manager can call for a veto vote via an email to the commissioner. The commissioner will not release the name of the manager requesting the vote. Commissioner will then email each manager individually for a veto vote Veto votes are YES or NO there are no conditions involved. It is not the role of the voters to fix the trade. Managers not casting a veto vote will not count either way towards the veto percentage. Veto = 50% or greater of owners casting votes not involved in trade If a trade occurs where there are an uneven amount of players swapped (example: 3 for 2) the manager must leave a roster spot open for the trade to occur. Yahoo! cancels trades if a roster spot gets filled. In the case of a trade getting canceled because of this situation it will be required that the trade is made again and the commissioner will commit the trade immediately and waive the wait time. If a manager deliberately attempts to sabotage the league the commissioner has the power to banish that manager from the league and freeze the teams roster. (dumping star players to free agency, ridiculous trades)

Draft: 27 Round Draft 26 man rosters plus 2 farmer reserves Farmer explanation: Farmer = 0 major league experience Drafted in any round of the draft Each team is allowed one farmer pitcher and one farmer hitter Can be retained for the season they are brought to the majors and the following season if they are never released If the player is not brought to the majors during the season the following year the manager can choose to retain the player as a farmer or redraft another player. The 28th position will be a keeper. Keeper picks will be due before the start of the draft. The player must have been drafted by a team in the previous draft between rounds 14-27 and never been released as a free agent. The player must be on your roster by the trading deadline and on the end season roster. Keeper eligible players retain their keeper status when traded. Keepers can only be kept for one year. Draft initial order will be random Inverse Rounds Draft Order (snake draft) Draft Trading Allowed http://www.kffl.com/draftanalyzer/index.php Trades involving the highest draft pick in the first 5 rounds, the trade must be within 1000 points using the draft calculator Trades involving the highest draft pick in rounds 6-15, the trade must be within 500 points using the draft calculator Trades involving the highest draft pick in rounds 16-27, the trade must be within 100 points using the draft calculator 6 hour time limit with the clock off between 2am eastern and 8am eastern 12 hour time limit on the weekends no clock off time Starting in the 20th round there will be a 4 hour time limit If a manager has back to back picks they are allowed one time period and then both picks are skipped. Once a manager is skipped because of running out of time subsequent picks for that manager do not get a new time period until the manager makes their missed picks. Trades do not reset the time clock. The time is associated with the pick and not the manager. If a pick is skipped because of time running out the pick can be made as soon as the manager shows up. Players picked after the missed pick are off of the board. If a manager drafts a player already picked the draft will continue with the next manager and the manager who made the duplicate can replace the duplicate pick at any time. Since the draft immediately continues players selected after the duplicate pick are off the board as far as the duplicate manager is concerned. In the case where a manager picks out of order or someone other than the manager picking make an incorrect pick (wrong queue, duplicate pick) and others make picks after the bad pick the draft will revert back to the place where the out of order pick was made. Once a pick is posted to the message board the pick is final
removing the post and repicking is not allowed. A manager can leave picks with another manager if they will not be available to pick. Queues are encouraged.

Farmer Specific Info
1) Each team is allowed one farmer hitter and pitcher. 2) They are drafted at any point during the normal draft. 3) To qualify for farmer the player must have 0 major league experience 4) I will put a list of teams farmers in the commissioners notes and will try and watch for farmers as they make the bigs...if you see one of your players called up...please post a message with your current waiver position and make a waiver claim on the player...I will waive the waiver time and fix the waiver order. 5) When a player is added to the Yahoo! DB once someone posts a public message that the player has been added you have 5 days to either claim or lose your rights to that farmer. 6) In the season the player is brought to the majors you can retain the rights to that player for the following season. 7) If the player does not see the majors...next draft you can choose to retain the player in your farmer spot or release him. 8) You can retain the farmer for as many years as you like while in the minors and still have 2 years rights when he joins the majors. 9) You can only keep one farmer hitter and pitcher a retained farmer still fills a slot. 10) Once Farmers make the majors if they are traded between fantasy teams they lose retention status.

Sent out the league email...
added a couple lines to the farmer section of the rules: 11) Teams have until April 5th to add farmers to their roster if they are in the Yahoo DB. 12) If you choose to retain a farmer that is your farmer for the upcoming season, you cannot replace your farmer with a drafted farmer. 13) If you draft multiple farmers you have until Apr 5th to declare your farmer.

PV...your farmer picks last year were: Blake Beavan (P) TX Matt Antonelli (2B) SD
Beavan still has 0 major league experience so you can choose to keep him as a farmer pitcher.
Antonelli got called up last year but you still have the option to retain him this year in your hitter farmer slot.
As for your late round keeper. It looks like the only player you can choose to retain is Aaron Rowand.

I cannot figure out how to enter keepers without f-ing up the start of the draft?
It wants me to enter keepers as the first round picks but that then screws up the snake draft and the trade that already occurred. Anyone have any ideas? or do we have to wait until the draft is over and put the keepers in at the end?

I think last year those were our last "draft picks" i.e. Votto would be my Round 17 or whatever it is. And then I made a condensed list of these names and put them at the top of the draft thread so you would Ctrl+F and see they were already taken.

Maybe we will leave the timer off for this entire first week? So no one gets skipped in the first couple rounds. Any objections?

I'm going to register a mild complaint, which may sound like sour grapes, since I was saddled with pick #13.
Why start a draft on "On the Clock" and then not use it? I find it hard to get any type of flow when I check in several times a day and attempt to figure out if I'll be drafting today, tomorrow or sometime this weekend. Obviously the first couple of picks are paramount to success, so filling a que isn't as realistic as it will be down the line.
In the future, I suggest we officially start the draft with a clock. It would eliminate this feeling of limbo that we've started the draft, but haven't really started.

Pancho, I share your concerns, but it looks like from TRS's post in 79 that we are going clockless for only one week and then starting officially on Monday, just to make sure nobody was on vacation and not checking in this week. Its hard to just start and say go without warning.
I would assume Monday we will turn on the clock and start for real, and that this time now is just extra.

Well...I was definitely hoping it would go a little quicker than it has started. Everyone should know it has started...I sent an email when it started and Kafenatid automatically sends emails when people are on the clock. The proposed date from the beginning was 2/23 and no one objected.
The clock will be set to 6 hours on Monday 3/2 (off from 2am - 8am eastern).
It was sort of a last minute decision to leave it off at the start of the draft. I really did not want people skipped in the first few rounds and I was not able to start the draft exactly on time because not everyone had registered. But...I agree at this point it is sort of ridiculous to have to wait a day between picks. I will email sR.
Sorry...this is almost always an issue with these type drafts...I hate it but it seems this is the way it works.

Let me add to that- It is not really anyones fault- there is no clock right now- its when there is a clock and someone uses 5 hours and 50 minutes for every pick that it becomes a problem- I dont see that happening here.

Also...whenever possible please try to utilize queues...if your pick is in the next one or two...you should pretty much know your top couple players.
If you are going to be away for an extended time please please please utilize a queue or at least post here that you are away for x hours.
It just kills a draft when you have extended wait times...as then it seems all picks start extending.
Another key is if you are on the wrap end of the draft please think about a queue.

Like I said, being #13 may make it sound like sour grapes, but I don't feel I can leave a que for my first two picks. The three players picked ahead of me(at this point) will dictate my strategy, so I want to make sure I don't end up with two power hitting outfielders when I might want an power hitting outfielder and a base stealing , high OBP, run scoring infielder, or a top starting pitcher.
Make sense?

PV...no problem...I more concerned with the drafters at 12-2 and 11-3...when you make the 12th pick you should have a good idea the position/players you want with your next pick. I totally understand it is not realistic to queue two picks especially early in the draft.

As for the farmer rules from last season...
I did add 3 new rules regarding farmers to try to account for some of the issues from last season...so I think the issues have been addressed:
11) Teams have until April 5th to add farmers to their roster if they are in the Yahoo DB. 12) If you choose to retain a farmer that is your farmer for the upcoming season, you cannot replace your farmer with a drafted farmer. 13) If you draft multiple farmers you have until Apr 5th to declare your farmer.
...basically if you retain a farmer you cannot draft and replace the retained farmer.
...I am allowing teams to draft multiple farmers but they are only able to declare one as their farmer and if the player that is not declared a farmer is not in the Yahoo DB by Apr 5th the team has no rights to the player.
...Someone could draft multiple farmers to block other teams...I am allowing it because I think it is a poor strategy and waste of draft picks and hurts the drafting team more than the rest of the league.
If there is anything else that has not been addressed please post and we have time to fix things now.

Hi guys, just wondering hypothetically what would happen to the draft if someone accidentally took a guy that was already keeper or farmer protected? Just wondering for risk management purposes because I could see it escalating by a small flurry of picks coming after the "tainted" pick and then where would we go?

These are the rules we have in place: If a manager drafts a player already picked the draft will continue with the next manager and the manager who made the duplicate can replace the duplicate pick at any time.

Or, to be specific, we need a better way of isolating unpickable players. Now that Guru has created this thing that disappears middling posts, a Cntrl-F Up on Eva Longoria no longer finds his/her name as a keeper.

I really wish we could enter the keepers before the draft...I am sure there had to be a way to fake it some how or another...
The way it is now it is kind of the drafters responsibility not to make a duplicate pick. It used to be even more of an issue when we did it via message board...at least Kafenatid takes the already picked players off the board.

I think part of the problem is that some people will have 1 keeper, while others will have 3. That is hard to work into the program specs. Especially when we then would have to figure out which player was the round 14 selection for each particular manager.

It does not need to be difficult...would just need to add players to teams before the draft and then let the draft start in the first round. No need to designate the picks as rd 14 or farmers...just need them assigned to a team and not count as draft picks.
It makes no sense to have keepers count as the first picks in the draft...if it is a snake draft and you have an odd number of keepers then all of a sudden you could be starting reverse on the first round.

I think the best part of Kafenatid is the blind queuing system Toral, especially for those that cannot be near a computer that often. It keeps the draft flowing.
And we have odd keepers for our other league, we just invert the initial draft order and when the odd number is entered, then we are to our designated first selector.
All that being said, I have a queue set up, feel free to use it for as long as its good.

You should decline being DP for them then. I always get my emails for my picks, perhaps yours are going into junk mail? I think Kafenatid has saved a lot of time vs. previous years. Definitely interesting draft thus far...
Highlights and notes:
One team has their entire lineup set but has yet to draft a pitcher...
If ARod goes under the knife my team is pretty much cooked...I guess that is what I get for drafting a player I do not like...
We have been moving pretty good after a rough first week...at this point in the draft I would encourage more people to consider using the queue system...it does not take much effort to list a few players for your next pick and select a designated picker or two...especially if there is a chance you will be away 3 hours or more...sitting on the clock for 4 hours or more during prime hours does slow down the draft...
Starting in the 14th round draft picks will have keeper eligibility...
Starting in the 20th round we will be going to a 4 hour clock...
Farmers can be drafted at any point in the draft...
The clock is off on the weekend...but please if you are going to be away for an extended time please leave a message on here or queue up a few picks...
I am looking forward to the season...kind of amazing we are going into our 7th season as a league.

I haven't drafted a SP, yet. I know it is crazy, I didn't go into it with this strategy but all of the SP I was going to draft got taken just a couple of picks before me. I almost took Linecum in the 2nd rd. I just hope some of my sleeper SP that I eventually pick up will produce OK. Quick question how are we knowing if someone drafts a farmer?

Any player that has 0 major league experience qualifies so I do not think we really have to know. Everyone will just need to declare them either here or at the Yahoo league message board before Apr 5th.

That is the problem with farmers sometimes...those pesky september call ups...typically if you choose a farmer on a low budget team you have a chance to avoid the situation as they do not want to bring them to the majors any earlier than they need to so they don't have to start the arbitration and free agency clock.

I just had an idea for next year... how about if they are called up in Sept, it doesn't count? We wouldn't have to track AB's or IP or anything... just that the player was not in the major leagues as of 8/31 of the previous year (before rosters expand and random guys get called up for no good reason like to pinch run).

No clock on the weekends. I would prefer to have just an extended clock (12 hour) but kafenatid has the option to leave it the same as the week days or turn it off. So it is off...
I am happy with the progress we made this week...if we keep it up next week we should be through the draft by next weekend.

I second GO's proposal...while my case (Price) might not happen that frequently, it sucks when they get called up for one week of fantasy stats and you lose that year of eligibility.

Well I think its simple enough to track. On Sept 1st - we could just declare which guys can still be kept as 1st year farmers the following season. Then whatever happens in Sept happens. Its as though those Sept stats never occured. Losing a year of eligibility on a guy cause they called him up for a cup of coffee hurts the fun of this concept. In this scenario, Slizz would get Price for this full year and could carry him over through draft time a year from now and then he's done. Again, he's have to keep him on the roster the whole time etc etc You really aren't changing anything - just moving the "0 games played" deadline to a more useful date for everyone.

I have to think about this...
If I was to make this change...I would propose: 1) Newly drafted farmers still need 0 major league experience. 2) If your farmer gets called up in September...the next season his 2 season clock starts period.
I prefer it this way because I definitely want the 0 major league experience for new drafted farmers...it is easier for me to track who qualifies or not...no gray area.
I do not want to give much more of an edge than that...it is already a huge advantage in this league if you can get a valuable farmer or two.
This would not be put in place until next seasons draft.
Does this seem reasonable?

I think thats fair... so to draft a brand new farmer we'd still be looking for zero appearances guys. Think of it this way -- everything is exactly the same, we just look the other way if a kid already on the farmer list gets a a cup of coffee in Sept. Its as though it never happened. I think its a great idea.

WG - I thought Upton was a lock for 14.01. I flirted with taking him @ 13.03, but in the end it would be reaching based on his statline...however, you can now keep him for 2 years, unless you draft someone better! He, by far, has the most upside of the "keeper" eligible players.

Nope, you get Joe Martinez. He's good anyway! San Francisco's 12th-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Martinez has risen through the Minor League system in classic fashion, ascending one classification per year. The right-hander has displayed excellent control, maintaining a 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the Minors. He used his command to thrive last year, finishing 10-10, but leading the Eastern League with a 2.49 ERA for Double-A Connecticut.

Yonder is a great pick just for his name even if he never plays a major league game. He was awarded "Best Name" on my favourite prospect site ahead of some guys (or girls...sometimes the name makes it hard to tell) whom I shouldn't mention while the draft is still on.
But I will say that Bombo Rivera, Matt Batts and Drungo Larue Hazewood haven't been chosen yet.

My team sucks so far, so I needed to take a reach with Pedro and hope he signs with the Dodgers and gets to play there. It is a faily low risk at this point in the draft, but a healthy Pedro, playing in the pitcher's park that is Chavez, could have high upside.

Boy does that suck. I went to the trouble of e-mailing Fred and getting Trevor Cahill added to the player list and then someone steals him before he gets back to me.
Cancel that comment about Greinke. Is this draft really 28 rounds? Does that include 2 tounds for farmers?

yes 28 rounds...
26 man rosters and 2 farmers...
So really it will only be 27 rounds as everyone had at least 1 keeper.
I am working on the last three rounds right now to post a list of how many picks everyone has remaining.

pick #25 - regular pick in que
pick #26 - farmer hitter in que
pick #27 - keeper A Rowand in que
pick #28 - farmer pitcher Beavan not in que, not in system
Two missed picks in round #25, a couple in #24.

At this point we are so late in the draft it really does not matter if someone gets skipped over a few picks...and it is in the rules that in cases like this the draft does continue.

woohoo! draft complete...
Jackhammers still has his last 3 picks to make. He has until the end of the day today to make those picks or he will just start with 3 empty roster spots he can fill with free agents. I will stop the draft at 5pm this evening. I think this is fair as it would be an advantage to be able to watch the news wire and cherry pick players for the next week before I start the season in Yahoo.

Important notes:
I will enter the players into Yahoo by the end of this weekend.
I will start the season Mar 30th in Yahoo...this gives us a week before the season starts.
All free agents will be on waivers to start the season including teams farmers. Do not pick up your farmers until they come off of waivers.
Teams will have until April 13th to roster your farmers (1 week from MLB season start) or they will become free agents open to the league. I will post a reminder on the Yahoo message board for players available in the Yahoo DB.
It would be helpful if everyone would post their new farmers on the Yahoo board.
Thanks...good luck this season!

Do we want to bump the trade deadline back to August 30th like most other leagues? Apparently Yahoo picked a default of 8/16 when you carry over settings. But you can go a full 2 weeks later and we've adjusted in Dirty Dozen, and its that way in G20, RIBC etc. I can't imagine a trade deadline nearly two months before the season ends (Oct. 4th).

As I mentioned in my victory celebration speech - I don't expect to return this season. This league really frustrated me - mainly a few of the managers who didn't check in for half the season made things difficult. If we got some new blood I'd consider it but I think I'd rather try doing an RIBC league at this point. Thanks to TRS for all the work and concepts, it was a fun league.

Considering calling it the end of the league...unless I get encouragement otherwise.
7 years is a pretty good run and was always an interesting league.
I am so busy with goalline blitz lately that I am sure I would have slacked in fantasy. May just join one of the RIBC leagues.
