I am looking to set up one of the Roto Auction leagues through ESPN this year.
Categories would be standard 5x5. (OBP and AVG. can be debated once we have our 12-14 managers)
Just wondering if there is interest out there. Since we all have to be online at the same time during the draft, I am suggesting a Tuesday night with a draft start time of 9:30 pm EST. This is flexible.
Anyone interested? |

Looking good!
Once we get a couple more people onboard, we can talk parameters.
I was thinking since there is no money aspect after the draft, (I believe after the initial auction is complete, money is moot?) the starting WW order could be most cash to least cash.

Well there are our 14 guys. I wouldn't want to go any higher with this being a first year auction league.
Now that we have names established...I will post some league details a little later today for discussion.

Alright...here are my opening thoughts:
26 man roster, $260 to spend. Roster will look like this:
C 1b 2b 3b SS CI MI OF OF OF OF UTIL
8 Pitcher Slots 6 Bench Slots 2 IR Slots
Each position slot can be used for 162 games. Pitching Inning Caps: 900 minimum, 1300 Maximum
Categories: Avg., HRS, RBI, RUNS, SB W, SVS, ERA, WHIP, K
Non-Keeper (At least to start)
Main Question: FA WW?
Baseball is such a claim today play immediately game. Would a weekly claim process work? (Submit blind claims on Sunday?)
Here are some ideas:
1. After the auction, WW is open similar to any fantasy league, first come first serve, money values are over when the auction is over.
2. Each team gets a specific amount of FA money to spend. Say, every team gets $260 and can place a blind bid on players on Sunday, and should they win the bid, that money gets subtracted from their FA budget.
3. Only leftover money from the initial $260 is used. So if you have $50 leftover from the auction, that is your FA budget for the year. I personally like this one the least as it would drastically limit waiver moves throughout the year, as most teams would have very limited funds to use.
I think I like the first one best, only because you have the ability to add a guy on the spot and use him right away. We could place a fee on all FA pickups, say $5 and that money is deleted from your FA Fund of $260 every time you claim a guy. That would put more value into the strategy of whether you might want to claim a guy or not.
Open to all thoughts and discussions here...

I'm not in your league, but I might suggest a hybrid between 2 and 3: set an amount of free agent $ that everyone gets after the draft, and allow people to add their leftover cash to that amount.

That is interesting, and also offers value to managers who have leftover auction money as well.
Then would you go with a once a week claiming process?

Tough to say with baseball. I think weekly might be too little, but twice a week might be an interesting compromise. Alternatively, you might leave things open but have transactions still have a cost.

If there is a cost for a WW pickup, would we see a refund of some sort for releasing a player? Especially, say, if a more expensive player goes down with a season-ending injury? Is there to be s similar cost for for a FA pickup?
The problem, as I see it, is that there is a limit placed on the amount of waiver activity if we have a set dollar amount to spend. Is that what the intention is?

Yeah...it would be a lot of work to find time to do it more than once a week I would think. Then I would want someone to help out with that.
Its not as easy as football where you only play one game per week.
I definitely don't want to curtail add/drops, so I guess we need to find the best way to do that.
Maybe we have daily bids? I would think that getting 2, 3, or 4 bids or so per day would be easier to process for me than a whole bunch 2 days a week.
We could also limit 1 blind bid per manager per day to help with the workload. That means a manager could still put in 7 bids per week.
The only thing that would need to be covered would be when I am away.
Having the whole money aspect erased after the auction, and making all waiver players free and available would defintely be the easiest route, and we could reward the thriftiest spenders by placing them on the top of the Waiver Claim list.

In order of preference:
1) Leave it open, and WW order is most money left over to least money left over. (Random # generator to split ties)
2) A blind bidding system for FA's daily (maybe by Email), at midnight we open the emails and see who gets who. (Player to be dropped would be included in the email)
3) Fixed cost for add/drops, with extra draft money carried over as a bonus.
I prefer 1 the most because its the simplest. I could see some issues arising with time availability, and it would be a mess for someone to not get the player they wanted because the FA handlers were away or MIA for a day or two.
I dislike 3 the most as it would restrict WW action, require supervision, and doesn't really add much to the league.
#2, while time-intensive for whoever runs it (maybe a committee), would be pretty fun. What would make it awesome would be if someone could write a .html script or something, where we would all submit our daily bids blind, and the website reveals them all at midnight. Hands-off approach. (I have no idea how easy/hard this would be to code.)

Hey...that HTML idea is great. Surely one of the computer dudes around here would be able to figure something like that out, no?
Then we could just add our own players each day via bidding.

Any chance we can make this a keeper league from the get go? Looks like we've got a pretty good group of managers, and post 17 seems to indicate we might switch to one eventually anyway.
Additionally, if we are going to put a lot of effort into it (like the html thing), thoughts on making it a money league to ensure managers stay involved? Maybe something like $20 or $25?
I would vote for the whole $100 to spend on FA throughout the year thing. Isn't that generally industry standard for auction leagues? I would vote for a $1 minimum bid on all claimed players. I would be ok with either daily or weekly transactions. If that html thing isn't possible, it might be difficult for someone to check in everyday to push these moves through though.

I was thinking about the keeper thing, and my other leagues are all keepers, and I would love to have a league where you have a shot at any player you want. And with the auction, that is possible...you can bid on all the top guys if you want! (Money permitting of course)
I would be up for throwing some money into the pot however.
To keep things interesting though, what if we looked into a RBIC-like format where maybe the bottom 2 teams are replaced each year?
As it stands, I would love to have a website that could help with claims, but failing that, I think leaving claims open, and setting the WW order to the most money left over to least money left over is the most viable option.
Thoughts?

Ok...so I got some info from a computer rotoguru guru.
Having a website for bid posting would be easy enough to set up...however...we would need to find one that supports Java applications, and then figure out what cost would be attached to this. He didn't know of any websites that host that would be free, or even low in cost.

I was in a auction keeper league. Any player on the waiver wire after the draft was $1. If a player was dropped he retained is bid value. After the draft was finished we had a "waiver claim draft" to account for players on the DL and any other 'missed players" post draft. After that it was fisrt come first served. To keep managers from stocking up on prespects we used a short bench of 3 players.
To deal with the prices of picking up prospects for $1 the prices of all keepers we escalated each season. The first season a player was kept you added $3. The second season you added another $6 and then $9. We also had a minimum keeper value of $7.
I would prefer a system that was more automated and didnt require too much human intervention.

Yeah, minimal human work would be best!
Having said that: Unless we get a computer program that can automate things, I suggest we go with every player not drafted being a free agent, and the WW order will be based upon who has the most cash left after the initial auction is complete.
I say we go with non-keeper.

Isn't part of the reason to implement the bidding to address the keeper issue? Like that you don't want someone who is quick to the FA pool have a bunch of great keepers for like a buck? If it's non keeper, is there really a big harm in just doing a straight, first-come, first-served FA process? Sure, those who act fast are still advantaged, but they only benefit for this year, and the waiver process still controls non-FA.

I like the idea of FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) at a certain level for all, with any leftover funds from the initial auction added to it to give those who managed their $$ well an advantage.

re: 40: I agree with this point. I mean every other baseball league is first come first serve, so it wouldn't be too different with an auction league.
re: 41: Having that budget setup is definitely the ideal, but we would need at least 3 guys to step up and help out with all the work that it would take.

There is a place in the LM tools on ESPN for the league manager to give dollar values to certain transactions:
League Entry Fee $0 Misc League Fee $0 Cost Per Trade $0 Cost Per Acquisition $0 Cost Per Drop $0 Cost to Move Player to Active $0 Cost to Move Player to DL $0
While I've never used them as commish in the one league I'm in there, it seems that this might provide a solution that could work. I can't find anything under the rules section as to how these counters work, but the Cost Per Acquisition and Cost Per Drop might offer a solution for our purposes here.
Does anybody have any experience with this?

If managers have equal amounts of money left over, we will do the dice roll thing.

Also for how we do the draft I assume that we will be using ESPNs software since that is where we are holding the league. If you look there are mock drafts that you can sign up for to get a feel for the system. There likely wont be many participants but still show how the system works.
Pretty much you alternate nominating players and then each player has around a 30 second clock til they move on to the next player. It runs the auctioneer process with the going once going twice...

Yeah, I was thinking of going with ESPN. I sat in a couple of mocks, and while it sucked with guys bidding $78 for Albert Pujols, you can get a sense of what they offer.
All the managers show up at the same time and place, and then one manager posts a player and the bidding goes around until there is a 15 second downtime. I finished 2 drafts in less than an hour each. I suppose our group would take a little longer, but wouldn't think it would take more than 2 hours.

Glad to hear we are using ESPN. I happen to work on the product so if anyone has any questions or needs any help let me know. Its far from perfect, but we are always striving to improve, and I think we are the best in the industry for the breadth of options we offer.

As long as its after 9:30pm ET it should work for me however I must warn you that these auction drafts typically take around 5 hours. Could be a rough night.

5 Hours?!? Damn...the mocks are taking 30 minutes. Now I mean that is a mock, and people are stupid, but I didn't think it would be that much of a bump up.

The mocks I have been in have lasted at least 2 hours each, and that was with most people leaving after 40-50 picks. it speeds up considerably once the automated process takes over.
Can we move the date to a Friday night?

Yeah when people are actually drafting and not going on auto pick it can take considerably longer. I imagine this would be the case, though we could change the Nomination clock to a shorter time, like 10 seconds and even the bidding clock. If we changed these we would be able to then change them to longer time increments later in the draft to allow for more obscure picks.

Tuesday is still best for me, but I was able to change my schedule and can do Thursday. Re:81-Take a look at the settings available to the commissioner; it would be logical for you to be able to set the maximum time allowed to nominate a player before the program chooses one. You also might be able to limit the time from when the bid is made until the player is declared sold. The math: (14 teams)X(26 players per team)X(0.5 minute per nomination, bids and sale)=182 minutes or 3 hours. Would it be possible to start earlier than 9:30 PM EDT?

Re 84: With respect to our Eastern time zone bretheren, it would be hard for me on the West Coast to be ready any earlier than 7:30pm ET - and that's bailing out of work at least an hour early (which I can do).

Thursdays I can definitely start earlier, but as Species mentioned, we do have some westies here that we have to consider. Tuesdays I work until 8:45ish.
Not sure if everyone wants to spend a Friday night bouncing away on the internet, do we?
Let me check some settings and see what can be altered.

No worries. To break it down, the default setting everyone gets 30 seconds to nominate and then the bidding starts with a clock of 30 seconds. Anytime a bid is made with less than 10 seconds on the clock it resets to 10 seconds.
I would ballpark a more realistic average of at least 1 minute per player. In order to make that faster I would suggest we shorten the nomination clock to 10 seconds and the bidding clock to 20 seconds for the first 150 players. This would speed up the draft immensely. Bariko if you'd like I can take care of this during the draft.

One last idea, if we can't get a time together would be to do a slow auction. I know we did this last year for a league and it worked out pretty well. I don't exactly remember how it worked, but maybe WG could fill in on some of the details, as he was in the league as well

Species, I Hate Philadelphia, Proteins, and Golffreak have been sent invites.
Personally, I would very much prefer a fast draft, with all of us there in one room. If one person cannot make a set time, I think we need to look at a substitue selector, or replacement.
I don't think I can change the times set for selecting players/bids until I select an actual draft date and time.

Those settings, time per pick and nomination will have to be changed once the draft is launched. In a custom draft there is a tab called LM tools. Using this tab you will be able to edit these.
As for availability I will be available any night except Wednesdays before 9:30pm. I'm also away 3/10 - 3/19 but assume we wouldn't be drafting that early anyway.

Just an FYI:
My buddy did a full auction draft with ESPN last night, 12 guys (2 less than us) same sized rosters and he said it took 4 hours and 15 minutes.
All the managers were there. He said time was wasted on the nomination of players (too long, which we can change) and then 2 managers gettting into "a pissing match" by continually bidding each other up with one second left on the clock for about 5 or 6 guys---which of course irritated everyone.
He said the actual bidding clock was good. It started at 20 seconds, and if someone rebid with less than 10 seconds left, it would reset to 10 seconds, which was a good amount of time. I asked, and he did suggest that the inital 20 seconds could have easily been lowered to 15 without any concerns.
So I think we can honestly look at a 4 hour draft, maybe less depending on how we tighten up the nominating time. (If a manager doesn't nominate, the bot just takes the highest rated guy.)

I think we need to make sure we can get 14 guys on a certain date before we expand. As it is, we might have one manager that cannot make the date that everyone else can make.
Once I have everyone signed up onto ESPN, I can start sending group emails talking about specific dates.

I think expanding to 16 would be too much- 1st of all it makes things real thin- which I could live with, but 2nd it add like 50 more players to the auction that is already expected to take like 4 hours.

I haven't played in more than one league per season before, and I find it difficult sometimes to keep the FAs straight. 3 leagues are enough for me, and I am a little in awe of those in more.-l
