Subject: New game opportunity - Draft Bug

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Fri, Mar 20, 2009, 10:14

For those who don't read the blurb page or play fantasy Hoops, I want to introduce you to another fantasy game alternative: Draft Bug.

RotoGuru Sponsor of the Month
Draftbug.com offers daily fantasy sports contests. Players compete in real money or play money contests. Registration is free and takes less than a minute. Deposits can be made by credit card or Paypal, and withdrawals are paid by check. Compete in salary cap or live draft formats. No need to commit to a full season - draft today, win tomorrow!

Anyone registering prior to April 1st will receive 4,000 player points free, which will allow entry in $4 of real money contests. As a special limited promotion, Draftbug will provide $10 more of free player points to select expert players - send an email to Guru (davehall@rotoguru2.com) for details. NBA basketball and NHL hockey contests are running now, and MLB Opening Day is April 5th.

Register via the link here, or simply go to draftbug.com and enter guru in the promotional code field.

I have begun an affiliation with a new fantasy sports game, DraftBug.com. Among the appeals of this game:
  • You can register for free. No need to prefund an account before trying it out.
  • New contests are offered daily, and most (maybe all) are for one day only. No need for a long term commitment. Play when you have the time, skip it when you’re busy.
  • You can enter “play money” contests as a means to try it out without committing actual money.
  • There are plenty of low-priced cash contests. Entry fees can be as low as $1.00.
  • Some contests use a salary cap limitation. Others use a “snake draft” approach, so you don’t have to “share” your players with any other entrant.
Here’s the real kicker: I plan to provide limited sortable stats support for the game. Player prices have been loaded into the database, and will change periodically (but not daily). Fantasy points will be tracked and updated daily. (Note: for basketball, only the sortable stats will be updated (including the projection capabilities. Player pages will not include Draft Bug data for hoops. When baseball begins, I hope to have the data fully integrated into all RotoGuru programs.) Note also that there are hockey contests. I won’t be setting up stats support for hockey, but this may provide an interesting outlet for some of you hockey fans.

The sortable stats are already up and running for hoops, and baseball data should be available shortly.

Currently, "Home Run Derby" contests are offered for the month of April, including one which is free for the first 200 entrants. So far, 85 have signed up. You pick ten players, and total their HRs for the month of April. Top 10% win modest prizes. There is a "salary cap" for this contest, and I'll have those prices posted in the sortable stats sometime next week - but if you enter, you should be able to copy and paste the player list into a spreadsheet, if you want to get an early start. You don't need to lock in your picks until the baseball season begins.

Although I can't find anywhere where it says so explicitly, it appears that Canadians are ineligible. Registrants are required to list a state, and no Canadian provinces are listed. They have been careful to exclude states where fantasy gambling is illegal, and if Canadians were to be eligible they would have had to do the same for Canadian provinces.

Toral - Canadians can't enter yet, but except for those from Quebec province, will soon be able to. No legal issue...just a minor software enhancement is needed. I'll post here once its enabled.

I think this will be the scoring formula for general baseball contests:

1B = 1 pt
2B = 2 pt
3B = 3 pt
HR = 4 pt
R = 1 pt
RBI = 1 pt
BB = 1 pt
SB = 2 pt
K = -1 pt

Pitching
W = 10 pt
L = -3 pt
SV = 7 pt
IP = 3 pt
H = -1 pt
K = 1 pt
ER = -1 pt
BB = -1 pt

I'm going to work on the sortable stats using this point formula.

Toral - Canadians are now eligible to enter.

All - Daily baseball contests are now open.

Also, 137 spots out of 200 in the $100 Freeroll April Home Run Derby are now filled.

As it turns out, the player costs for the April HR derby are different than those for the normal constests. So I put the HR derby player prices in a spreadsheet, for those who want to do some analysis.

http://rotoguru1.com/base/HR_derby_prices_Apr09.xls

I hope to have regular contest player prices, positions, and points (2008) up in the sortable stats by the beginning of next week.

Draft Bug sortable stats

These prices will be in effect for the start of the season. I expect the prices to change every several weeks.

Points reflect the formula in post 4, applied to 2008 regular season stats.

MLB contests are under way.

We have live draft contests open all the time. Also for days like today we have some 'night game' contests where registration will remain open until 7pm Eastern. Daily freerolls are running as well.

Out of respect for Guru, I signed up for Draft Bug. I joined the Home Run Derby Free Roll and one MLB day free roll.

I find your interface, well, atrocious. Not only is it real slow, but I can not find out how I'm doing or how I did without a ton of scrolling. I can't tell you how I'm doing so far in the April HR Derby because I'm not in the top 9.

I'm not your market, really, as I am not much of a gambler and you are not going to get my VISA number out of me. But if you plan on convincing other casual fans like me to jump in with cash in fist after tasting a little success, I seriously suggest a complete overhaul of your platform.

Seattle Zen - There should be a button in the contest that says something like 'Show Me' that shows the full standings including you.

The larger contests can be slow to load (it seems to vary depending on when you try it) and that's something we're working on.

Beyond that, I'd actually rather hear from others than give my opinions, because for the most part we've been getting extremely positive feedback...so if others have been keeping quiet with their complaints, we'd certainly like to hear their thoughts too!

I've come to appreciate the interface as it has sped up and I've figured out how to find my squad down at the bottom of the standings :)

This morning and this evening I have tried to have a check sent to me. I filled out the form, hit "submit" and I've received "Input string was not in a correct format". The form is quite easy, the format was correct. I'd like my check. What's wrong?

Seattle Zen - Not sure why you're getting the error. I would suggest sending two messages to support (via the support form) - one with your withdrawal request, the other reporting as much detail about the error (for example, what browser and operating system you're using) as you're able to provide. You can email me the error info (zelvin30@hotmail.com) and I can pass it along, but the check request has to go directly. -Alex

Overall, I'm having a blast with draftbug. I think that it is a bit rough on those of us on the west coast who work and have to find some free time during the day to post daily lineups but not much I can do except move to the east coast.

I started with the free 4000 pts and have built it up to $11.69. At this time, I'm only playing the $1 contests and the freerolls in keeping with good bankroll management rules.

I had my longest dry spell broken last night (five days of zippo) with a 2nd in the 10 player $1 contest. Now if only the Dodgers had held the lead since I had both Wolf/Broxton going and I would have had a 1st!

Seattle Zen - Glad that worked. I'm actually curious what's going to happen now, because I just noticed that the terms of service say something about minimum $20 withdrawals (which is the same as the minimum deposit). If you have any further problems, I suspect that may be the cause. -Alex

Actually I was referring to contests I had entered, and as far as details go, specifically the games, scoring values, and payouts. I have not found a way to see this once the deadline has passed. No worries, I was just curious and forgetful sometimes.

Another suggestion I would have for DraftBug, that may just be a personal preference is for points contests, sometimes I like to skip positions until I have drafted other positions. After a selection is made or removed it seems to default to the first position not drafted. My preference would be that it goes to the next position that still requires drafting after the selected position, but again this is probably just a minor inconvenience for me, I suppose. I know I am not your target market since I don't really have the time to do the daily research needed to be successful in baseball, so take my feedback with a grain of salt. :)

And for a suggestion to Guru: often times there are DraftBug contests for night games only. It would be convenient to be able to filter the players in the sortables that are playing after a certain game time. This would also be helpful on days where not all teams play. If this isn't possible or would be a pain to setup, no big deal.

As always, thanks for the entertainment value provided via DraftBug and RotoGuru!

I had a few minor technical issues with the site in the first week or so, but the last 3 weeks have been smoooooth sailing with no problems at all.

I've played baseball contests for the last month, and find it user friendly and fun to play. Since I don't have good bankroll management like Crunch Bunch, I made a deposit and have been mainly playing the $5 and $10 heads up contests. The one thing I would like to see added is 10 player contests in the $5 - $10 range.

Overall, a good site with a good game.

I'm participating in a special "Blogger" contest tomorrow (Wednesday), for Draft Bug marketing affiliates. Purpose is for marketing exposure and bragging rights. There are already 12 signed up, so I'd like to do well.

This will have a $1400 cap, with the usual position config: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF, SP, RP.

There are a several stud SPs tomorrow: Sanatana, Peavy, Halladay. They are all pricey, however, with Halladay the cheapest of the three at $289. Unless I can find enough cheap hitters, I may need to get a SP from the next tier.

So I guess the first objective is to identify the plausible cheap hitters to plug in.

Prices and point histories are all available at the sortable stats.

I'd welcome any ideas. I'll post more of my thoughts after reviewing the options. One place that I always start my research is here: pitcher vs. batter history

Some thoughts on the better home offenses (the ones that are at home):

Boston: Look at Pavano's career Fenway numbers without flinching, I dare ya. Pick a Sock, any Sock. Well, a Red one ideally.

Mets: Beltran, Tatis, Wright, Delgado all could be nice against Chan Ho.

Dodgers: Manny looks nice, and I'm sure Ethier and Kemp will enjoy what Daniel Cabrera has to offer.

Yankees: Jeter should be a good play, Matsui maybe.

Rockies: Not looking like a great choice against RJ, despite being at Coors.

Cards: Pujols, of course. Duncan, Thurston?

Angels: Napoli, Kendrick, and Morales all have had early success against Doc, but I would assume he adjusts accordingly. Not worth the risk.

Couple sleeper road pitchers: Garland, Galarraga.

Some thoughts on the better road offenses (that are on the road):

Jays: against an unknown righty. I would bank on Overbay doing some damage. Lind should be alright as well.

Indians: Victor seems like the best bet against a righty at Fenway.

Phillies: Wow, Johan might not be the safest bet, Werth, Howard and Ibanez all have past success against him.

Peavy and Kershaw are my top picks for Home pitcher.

Weather is another factor.

The contest will lock shortly after noon, well before final weather conditions are known for most games. Boston shows a 50% chance of rain.

Other games with tenuous weather outlooks:
Min @ Bal, 50%
Det @ ChW, 60%
Mil @ Cin, 60%

Three pitchers (other than the main 3) that jump out at me are Harden, Lowe and Slowey ranked in order of attractiveness. Harden had a bad last start but if he's healthy, good candidate to bounce back. Lowe is typically solid and Slowey had a bad last start but had two good starts before that.

The starting pitcher is the most important choice – especially if there are a variety of attractive options. Today, Santana, Halladay, and Peavy are all starting, and there are some decent second-tier alternatives as well. So I doubt if there will be significant consensus.

The scoring system tends to favor strikeout pitchers who win, and who go deep into ball games. An IP is worth 3 points and a K is worth a full point, while hits, earned runs, and walks are each worth only -1. So an inning with a strikeout starts at 4 points. Even if you surrender 2 hits and a run, it still worth +1. And a victory is worth 10.

Santana faces the Phillies in NY, Halladay pitches in Anaheim, and Peavy is at home vs. Arizona. All other things being equal, Santana would be the choice. But Philly has been hitting well of late, and Santana has a premium price. This contest has a fairly low cap, so I’m not sure Santana is the best value.

Halladay has been pretty consistent, but faces the Angels on the road. The Blue Jays played at home yesterday, so this is their first game after a cross country flight, and while that may not impact Halladay, it may have a dampening effect on the Toronto offense. The Angels have also been hitting well lately, although they are starting a rookie (Ortega).

Peavy has had a rough start, but pitched very well in his last outing. He’s in pitcher-friendly PetCo Park, facing pitcher-friendly Arizona. The DBacks have been the most favorable team for opposing starters this year (in this scoring format). Garland is the Arizona starter, and he certainly is capable of a quality pitching duel.

Halladay and Peavy are similarly priced. In a contest with a lot of entrants, I like to pair up a starter and his closer. Heath Bell and Scott Downs are also similarly priced (and also much cheaper than Lidge).

There are some respectable second-tier options, including Lowe and Harden. If I have trouble affording the hitters I want, I’ll reconsider them. But for now, I’m leaning toward either Peavy or Halladay.

It feels like one of those 8IP CG's for Doc today for some reason. The Jays are in bizarro world this year though.

Downs is a question mark for today, he has pitched a lot lately. 4 days pitched out of the last 5, with yesterday being over an inning. Only 16 pitches yesterday though plus Downs is a lefty, so he could probably pitch but I imagine they don't wanna see another pitcher hurt and will rest him.

In general, I chose my hitters by considering a variety of factors:
1. previous results vs. the opposing starter
2. recent hitting prowess (last week or so)
3. lefty-right matchup
4. price
5. weather
6. gut

Here were my choices:

C: Barajas ($12). Cheap @ $12, hitting well lately, and didn’t play yesterday, so he’s likely to be in the lineup. Opposing starter: Ortega (rookie)

1B: Derrek Lee ($162): This was a tough one. Would have preferred Pujols, but cost dictated a more moderately priced option. No one stood out, although my short list boiled down to Lee or Votto. Given the potential for rain in Cincy, I went with Lee, who faces lefty Hampton in Houston. His career OPS vs Hampton is .931, and Hampton hasn’t shown much so far this year. He hasn’t been particular hot, although he got two dingers in the last 5 days (after just one in April.) Call it a hunch.

2B: Callaspo ($6). Riding the hot bat, and saving some serious coin.

3B: Mike Young ($150). Again, he’s been hitting well, facing lefty Eveland – who he’s hit well in limited appearances. The game is in Oakland, but the wind is forecast to be blowing toward LF at 12mph, so maybe the ballpark impact is neutral.

SS: Theriot ($126). Also facing lefty Hampton. Theriot has been the top producer at SS over the past week. Scutaro was the alternative. I’ve had good luck with Theriot this year, so call it a hunch – even though Scutaro would have saved me $52.

OF1: Bay ($210). Facing righty Pavano, so it’s not a lefty-righty thing. He’s just been hitting well. And the Boston weather looks OK at game time.

OF2: Ethier ($154). Facing right Daniel Cabrera in Los Angeles. No matchup history, but I always like Ethier vs. righties, even though he actually been hitting lefties better this year.

OF3: N. Cruz ($155). I was really tempted to go with J.D. Drew here, taking advantage of the lefty-righty matchup in Fenway vs. Pavano. I might regret this pick. Cruz faces lefty Eveland in Oakland, against whom he has 3 extra base hits in just 6 AB. He’s been hitting pretty consistently all year, although his averages took a bit of a dip in late April. But he’s got 7 hits in his last three games, including a HR yesterday.

Summary: Two ultra-cheapies (Barajas and Callaspo) provided room to stick with mid-priced hitters elsewhere, and still afford either Peavy or Halladay. I’ll go with the Peavy/Bell tandem, preferring the NL pitcher in a pitcher-friendly park against a pitcher friendly lineup, in spite of Peavy’s spotty results so far this year. Of course, the Padre hitting has been comparable to Arizona’s, so this could turn into a low scoring affair – which potentially dampens the win potential for Peavy, but elevates the save potential for Bell. So watch it turn into a 10-8 affair.

In any single-day event, seemingly random influences often dominate the results. So I go into this contest feeling well prepared, but not particularly confident. If I do well, it could easily be due to factors that I didn’t consider. If I do poorly, it could be because other teams outsmarted me, or out-lucked me. But as long as I feel like I’ve done my homework, I’m content to let the chips fall where they may.

I'll be out for a few hours, so I won't be able to post the other rosters or early results until later - probably after 9:30.

I joined the Weds. Freeroll for the rest of us humans.

I'm not one for exerting much thought into filling out my roster. Without further ado:

Russell Branyan
Aaron Hill
Evan Longoria
Jason Bartlett
Mike Napoli
Nick Markakis
Nate McLouth
Andre Ethier

Rich Harden
John Broxton

I, too, like to ride cheap, hot hands. I've done well with Rich Harden before, though he is not one to see the eighth inning, rarely even the seventh. I like him as a differentiation move, very important for starters in my opinion. I usually do not pick pitching tandems, I envision the Cubs winning 8-0, plus Kevin Gregg sucks.

final contest results

9th out of 13.
Peavy was good, but not good enough, especially with no run support. Lee's DNP hurt alot, esp. since my alternative there would have been Cantu. My whole infield sucked, and Bay also disappointed.

If I had just gone with Halladay instead of Peavy and Cantu instead of Lee - both which were close calls - I'd have finished 3rd.

The nature of the beast.

Thanks Zen - it's nice when lady luck smiles upon your picks.

Also, the Pitcher vs Batter tool on this website that Guru mentions in [23] is great. I've been using a similar tool on two other sites but Guru's is definitely easier to use.

In both 10 player $1 cap games yesterday, there was an overlay as less than 10 players signed up for each one.

A couple of days ago in the $4.40 for 5 players which pays top two, there were only 3 of us, so 2 of us were guaranteed a profit. It's the only time I've gone outside of my bankroll but I squeaked into second.

Jump on those since DB guarantees the prize pool. You don't get a free lunch too often in this world.

I'm collaborating with Alex on developing a new tool that consolidates a bunch of weather forecast details for all of a day's games on a single page. It will be largely drawn from data at weather.com. With any luck, I'll have a prortype ready sometime next week.

As part of this, I will be displaying an icon for each game that depicts the forecasted wind direction, similar to that provided at weather.com. I have two alternative formats to choose between, and I can't seem to decide - so I thought I'd see if anyone else has a preference, based either on color or style. Here are the two options:

Another option would be to use both versions, with one to depict higher wind speeds than the other. I could even shrink the size of the arrow to denote the lighter wind speed.

Any thoughts?

I like the red arrows and I like the idea of changing the size of the arrow relative to the wind strength.

One question on weather.com. When you first select all the mlb games. They show a row of baseballs to indicate the chance of rain. However, when you click on the detailed forecast, it's quite different sometimes. I assume that the detailed forecast is the latest forecast and that the baseballs are not updated as often but is that correct?

I think the main page shows the general chance of rain for the whole day, or perhaps in the next several hours. If you click on the next page, it lists a precip% that corresponds to the starting time of the game. If you then click to the hour-by-hour tab, you can see the hourly probabilities.

The tool I'm developing will show the hourly numbers, starting several hours before gametime, and continuing until several hours after the expected finish time.

But it will show this detailed information for all games on one page. No more need to click multiple times for every game - and no getting faked out by an average rain % that doesn't correspond to gametime.

[21] I added game time to the output for the BvP tool. That should at least make it simpler to screen out visually the games that are too early for a given Draft Bug contest.

I'm going to make it clearer where each game is played as well. The info is there (after each pitcher it lists either "at" or "vs."), but I think I can make it more obvious.

Alex and I are collaborating on a new site dedicated to analysis for daily baseball contests - or at least daily lineup decision making. Included is the batter vs. pitcher summary tool that I've previously released on RotoGuru, plus a brand new "Weather Dashboard" tool that allows you to review the weather forecast (including hour-by-hour rain probabilities) for all of a day's games on one page.

Here's the general URL: http://dailybaseballdata.com

Let me know if you encounter any bugs.

Re: Post 11

I want to thank Alex for being a sand-up guy and the guys at Draft Bug. Sorry it didn't work out, but I do appreciate the fact that you sent me a check for $11 dollars after you threw in the towel.
