Eric Hinske to Yankees from Pirates for two minor leaguers.

I assume Hinske is primarily the bench player in the role Swish started the season at when Nady was a starter. Girardi loves Swisher and Gardner so Melky and Damon are likely to lose playing time. Also can play third so they can give A-Rod some more DH days so Matsui likely to get more rest too. The Yankees will at least have a more viable pinch hitter sitting on the bench based on who gets the day off.

Cody has to be the likely candidate to go down. Pena is more versatile in the middle infield.

I guess Hinske just needs to go to Baltimore next to have played for every AL East team.

Pirates were busy today, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says via twitter that this is a done deal (does twitter count as a reliable source these days?)

The Washington Nationals send Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan to the Pirates for Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett.

Hanrahan becomes a darkhorse for saves in Pittsburgh, but that doesn't really change his situation. One less competitor for MacDougal I guess.

Ah, Hinske. What might have been. This is a sound pickup for anyone, since he has plenty of pop.

Yesterday: Phillies sign Pedro Martinez to a one year deal for $1M plus a potential $1.5M in incentives.

Today: Phillies place Pedro Martinez on the 15-day disabled list with a mild shoulder strain. (although maybe that was by design since he'll need a few minor league starts).

I guess I'm happy to have Pedro. I mean, that price is dirt cheap. If we temper our expectations, I think he can give us some decent work. Plus it shows Roy Halladay that the Phils are trying to win.

In return, the Indians netted a strong group of prospects: Class A right-handed pitcher Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco(notes), shortstop Jason Donald(notes) and catcher Lou Marson(notes).

Pricey, but not ridiculous. The Phillies did not give up Happ, Drabek, Brown or Taylor. Francisco has value as a 4th OF for them. I like it from both teams' perspectives.

Mariners trade Ronny Cedeno, 3 minor league RHP and disappointing former #1 draft pick Jeff Clement for Jack Wilson and Ian Snell.

Does anyone have any idea for why the Mariners would do this?

Snell is an attractive young pitcher who is owed $3m next year and has club options on his contract for '11 and '12 for $6.75m and $9.25m, respectively. So I guess I can see adding Snell. But that seems like a lot to give up for an NL pitcher well on his way to a second consecutive season with a 5+ era. And why would they bring in Wilson? For the $8.4m club option next year? Why? The Ms are 7.5 games behind the Angels in the AL West and 14.5 back in the wild card. They probably aren't making a run, you know?

I really like that Cliff Lee trade. The Indians get Carrasco and Knapp--two bright pitching stars. The Phillies get a guy who clearly has great stuff, for the next two years.

Both Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco had very high value at the beginning of the season, but Francisco (in particular) really has not done as much as they would have thought. With Sizemore back he was expendable.

The Tribe also traded Ryan Garko to SF for minor league pitcher Scott Barnes. Hard to predict this deal, but Barnes looked pretty solid at Single A ball.

Personally, I think we just saw the end of Cliff Lee as a viable pitcher. I think his stats will revert to his pre 2008 form. Not that anybody thought he would repeat 2008. But in Citizens Bank Bandbox...Lee will get shelled. That's my prediction. Poor choice of pitchers by the Phils.

Hope I'm wrong. I'll love to see Philly back in the post season.

I wonder what Toronto thinks now. They played hardball with Halladay and it looks like
they are the losers...? I am really glad we stuck to our guns and kept Happ and Drabeck.

Don't know that much about Lee, but if Moyer with his soft stuff can win at CB Park,
anyone can. He most certainly will get run support.

As a Phillies fan, I really like the trade. They get a solid starting pitcher, and didn't have to give up Happ or Drabeck. They also got the right-handed hitter to use off the bench that they were looking for in Francisco.

I thought Toronto's price for Halliday was too high. Maybe they will get what they want from Boston or NYY.

Great trade for Philly. I agree Toronto's price was too high. That is a lot of left-handed arms now with Hamels, Happ, Moyer and now Lee. I'm not sure what to make of that.

But in a short playoff series, opposing teams are staring at Hamels and Lee 4 times, and 3 times in the 1st round. I like those odds.

As a Toronto fan I am disappointed that talks with Philly are dead, but did not think the package based around Happ was enough for one of, if not the, premier pitcher in the league. Happ is not really a young prospect anymore at 27, so I didn't even really want him as part of the deal. (I did at first until I realized his age.)

Halladay's contract is for one more year after this, and at a very reasonable amount. No sense unloading your best player in franchise history for what Philly was offering, especially when you can revisit trade talks in the offseason and next year as well.

That being said, if Boston is willing to pony up Buccholz, Ryan Westmoreland, and other parts, I think that would be a good way for Toronto to go.

I remember living in PGH from '86 to '92, when the Pirates became a contending team. And
where were you when Sid slid -- in my living room with my jaw dropping -- Andy Van Slick (sic)
just sitting on his glove in center field, incredulous.

It is a d*** shame what they have let that franchise become. With championship Steelers and
Penguins in Iron City, they need to get owners who care about baseball. The fans will support it in
that beautiful ball park.

re 29
check out alderson's K rate in AA this season. the walks and HR rate are pretty low but 46 K's and 76 hits in 73 innings is nothing to write home about (his A-ball numbers don't look great either). he's only 20 yrs old though...

holt 32: Alderson does not project as a Chad Billingsley-like strikeout master, but the kid has strong #2 starter written all over him. I'm not sure what A-ball numbers you don't think look great:

- He was NINETEEN and in his FIRST full pro season in 2008. As a High Schooler in the 2007 draft, I believe he was one of the first (if not the first) HS pitcher to pitch in High-A ball is HIGHLY impressive.
- The California League is a NOTORIOUS hitters league (although San Jose isn't so bad).
- I'd wager Alderson's 2.79 ERA and 1.10 WHIP were top 5 in the league (although both likely behind his teammate at the time, Madison Bumgarner)
- I doubt there are more than a few 20 year olds in the Eastern League. He has definitely been aggressively promoted.
- His stats are slightly inflated by a bad recent stretch of three straight games of giving up 4 runs.

Freddy Sanchez is a nice player, but if I am giving up a kid like Alderson I want it to be something a lot closer to "the final piece of the puzzle" as opposed to a solid upgrade that MIGHT give you a little better chance at a wild card.

Washburn to the Tigers for 2 minor leaguer pitchers. source

Thought he may have been the Yankee's pick up of the day.

Interesting that because the Yankees covet Austin Jackson and Miguel Montero so much, it almost precludes them from making deadline deals because their names are always going to be the first ones asked for by other GMs.

I found this on Wikipedia - Injured players may not be traded without permission of the Commissioner nor may they be optioned to the minors, though they may be assigned to a minor league club for rehabilitation for a limited amount of time (30 days for pitchers, 20 for non-pitchers).

So why did the Mariners not trade Bedard and/or Beltre? I was led to believe that was not an option. And the Mariners likely won't have enough money to re-sign both in 2010. And they'll both be back this season.

Now that I think of it, I think that Yuniesky Betancourt was on DL when he got traded to KC.

Here's a Seattle Times article from the day that Bedard went on DL.
By the way, at the risk of stating the obvious, the does mean that Bedard won't be traded by July 31. That was obvious yesterday, but technically, you can't trade guys on the DL.

Here's a different Times article that says that DL players can be traded.
As long as the receiving team is aware that the player is on the DL, and willing to accept that player, the trade can be consummated. All that is required, apparently, is to get the commissioner's office to sign off on it.

I also found several blog posts and message boards that said a DL player can be a "player to be named later", since they could not pass a physical at the time of the trade, but can within the allowed 6-month window.

I cannot find anything at the mlb.com website that is helpful at all.

Wikipedia is right. You can trade a DL player if the commissioners office accepts it, and I would see no reason why they wouldn't accept it since both sides have previously agreed to the deal and the player has a no trade clause that he's waiving.

Pure contract dump. Failing to move Halladay they still needed to move money.

$9.7 million in 2010, $12 million each in 2011 and 2012 and $12.5 million apiece in 2013 and 2014. It is not a good contract if Rios does not play up to his 2007 numbers.

I love Kenny Williams...he makes me a White Sox fan (Ozzie too). He simply is willing to make brave moves and the vast majority have turned out to be very good. I like the deal...Rios is 28...playing at US Cellular on a competitive team will really help him. This deal like Peavy is really more geared towards the future years.

Kind of funny that the inside baseball crowd thought Williams was a joke. Already has one title...if he wins another in the next few years he is among one of the best in the league.

He really set the Sox up to make these kind of moves as they had very little long term money on the books.

Some interesting stats:

Alex Rios had the lowest OPS of all starting ML RFs.

Ken Rosenthal points out, $12MM this offseason (Rios' approximate average salary) could have bought Bobby Abreu, Orlando Hudson, Russell Branyan, and Adam Everett, while leaving $800K to spare.

Like I stated before, I am in favor of this move IF they reinvest a good chunk of his annual salary on relevant free agents. (Pitching and a DH bat)

That means Halladay probably stays in Toronto for awhile longer. But I have to say Ricciardi generally failed at being a GM. It doesnt seem like any of his moves have worked. On the other hand, if Toronto was in any other division, some of those 80-something win seasons might have been even better and brought some dividends.

Boston gets it's SS help. They get former Red Sox SS Alex Gonzalez from Cincy for minor leaguer Kris Negron (SS). Source: mlb.com

From Red Sox:
Gonzalez, 32, will wear No. 13 and will join the club tomorrow. He is batting .210 with three home runs and 26 RBI in 68 games for the Reds this season, all at shortstop. The right-handed hitter has made six errors in 266 total chances and ranks eighth among National League shortstops (minimum 250 TC) with a .977 fielding percentage this year.

He returns for a second stint with the Red Sox after batting .255 with nine home runs and 50 RBI over 111 games in 2006. He also established the club single-season record for highest fielding percentage by a shortstop with a .985 mark. A veteran of 11 Major League seasons, Gonzalez owns a lifetime .246 average with 109 homers and 506 RBI in 1,185 games for Florida (1998-05), Boston (2006) and Cincinnati (2007, 2009). He was a member of the 2003 World Series Champion Marlins and has appeared in 17 career post-season games.

Dodgers beat the 8/31 deadline for post season eligibility and get a DH for the World Series from the White Sox in Jim Thome (I guess he'll pinch hit until then as I do not think you can put a glove on the guy). They also get Jon Garland from the DBacks.

A minor leaguer and some cash complete the Thome deal, the Garland deal involves a player to be named later.

This sucks for us Thome owners. He might get a couple of starts at 1B (spelling Loney) the last month, but not enough to qualify at 1B next season. "First left-handed bat off the bench" it sounds like--probably goes from 25 AB/week to 5.

Yeah, I have Thome in RIBC, but I also had Wright, so that's already tanked anyway.

In a blow to millions of keeper leagues...

Kenji Johjima voids the last two years of his contract in order to return to Japan.

Wow, what a Houdini trick the M's just pulled there, magically escaping from a $16 million horrible contract.

So is that some sort of contractual form of Hara-kiri?
