Subject: Keeper Help

Hello All-

Wanted to see if I could get some thoughts on a keeper dilemma I am facing. We get to keep 3 position players, two of which I am using on David Wright and Ichiro. The 3rd however, I cannot decide between the following:

Brandon Phillips - safer pick, would secure 2b which is not a fun position to fill

Manny Ramirez - risky pick, seems to be in a decline but always has the potential to be a top 10 player

Any thoughts?

Those are your only choices? Can you post your entire roster?

If it was between those I would take Phillips, I guess. Just because he's younger and 2B. And you wouldn't have to spend draft slots on speed later.

Roster from last year (team I am taking over this year):

Mark DeRosa
Matt Diaz
Ryan Doumit
Corey Hart
Brandon Inge
Carlos Pena
Colby Rasmus
Marco Scutaro
Ryan Theriot
Michael Young
(and the before mentioned, D.Wright, Mannywood, Ichiro, B.Phillips)

You've got plenty of speed with wright and ichiro. And w hile power is certainly much more abundant I'm not so sure I'd spend all 3 keepers on 1 category (yes, wright is a crossover).

what are your stats because thats the big key here. If you use BA, I might be more inclined to go with phillips, 25/25 is not a bad keeper at all. But if you go w/ OBP, take Carlos Pena. Ichiro's pure speed, pena's pure power and wrights mix of the 2 is a nice start to the draft.

Remember, stats win leagues, not positions. And while its nice to have a tight position like 2nd locked down if you overbalance 1 category you are not really helping yourself.

I agree. I'd likely keep Pena over Phillips anyway.

Yeah Pena is a better bet esp. with all the speed you got anyways.

I keep Wright, Brandon Phillips and Ichiro. I can find some cheap power and a random 1B a lot easier than a I can a top five 2B. And 20 HR's (along with 25 steals, 100 RBI) from my 2B is a lot tougher to find than a random 1B eligible to hit 30 something HR's.

BH - you should know better than anyone, you always have like 5 1B's on your team and can't get them all in the lineup.

And also, now the rest of the draft you can pretty much ignore SB's when everyone is wasting picks on Juan Pierre and Podsednik types.

Actually, in one league this year, I came out of autodraft with Utley, Kinsler, and Phillips and no shortstop. I soon traded Utley for Braun and got Andrus, so I was alright, I guess.
