I have sent out 16 invitations for the 2010 RotoGuru Invitational Baseball Challenge. Everybody who was invited has responded with a commitment to play, except for Bash Brothers (last year's RIBC Champion) – who has not yet replied.
As background, the RIBC invitations went to the top 6 in last year’s RIBC (excluding me), plus the top three teams in each of the two AAA leagues, plus the winner of each of two AA leagues, plus me. That makes 15 teams. Of the two 4th place finishers in the AAA leagues, I selected the one who finished closest to third place to fill the final spot.
Here are the 16 managers in the 2010 RIBC: Bash Brothers (pending acceptance) filthy Holt Dave R Species JL Tosh Tequila JeffG slackjawed yokels TD MBT loki Tilt2 111 Goldcoach Guru
A separate thread will be set up shortly to begin the process of filling Qualifying Leagues.
The first regular season MLB game is not until April 4. Typically, the draft requires 15-16 days, so I expect to start the draft on March 15 or thereabouts. To the best of your ability, plan accordingly.
I’ll post a recap of last year’s rules and settings shortly. I don’t think we have a need to change any rules for this year – but let me defer on that for the moment. I expect to use Yahoo as the hosting system once again.

Bash Brothers has declined the invitation to defend his title, citing a concern that he won't have the time to devote to it this year.
Consequently, I have invited Uptown Bombers, the next in line from last year's RIBC, to fill that spot - and he has accepted. So we are now full.

Interestingly, Yahoo offered an option this year for same day roster moves, rather than next day - so I selected that. That has always been a gripe about Yahoo leagues. Presumably, this means that if you add a player today, you can use him in your lineup today.

I like the same day option. Accoring to the Yahoo explanation the transaction will not be allowed if the game already started for a player you are adding or dropping. I believe in this case on the ESPN side, the move would still be allowed but then work like the next day option and take effect the next day. Not sure if that means for Yahoo you have to then wait for the next day to make your move.

The same day is a good change.
I particularly liked the "renew team" feature on the league invite page, especially considering I did not expect to make it back to the majors this year.

I've got mixed feelings about the same day feature. Once games start you can't pick up any player on the waiver wire who's game has started which can make planning for the next day challenging if you're someone who looks one or even two games ahead.

A strict reading of the Yahoo language suggests that frozen players simply could not be transacted until the following day, rather than having those moves deferred until the following day.
If so, it would suck to essentially be unable to make any roster adjustments in the evening, after most games have started. Maybe we'd be better served by going back to "tomorrow".
Unfortunately, this is one setting that gets locked in once the draft is completed, so we don't get a chance to try and see.
Here is the official Yahoo language:If you choose to configure your league to allow transactions to take effect on the day they are made, you will be able to add free agents to your roster for the current day so long as all transactions are completed no later than five minutes before the start of each player's game. None of the players involved in a move can have played or be within five minutes of their game's start time, or the transaction will not be allowed. So, for example, transactions for all players who play at 4:30 pm PT must be completed by 4:25 pm PT. Let's put this to a league vote. Shall we go to same day roster changes, or continue with the previous year's approach of next day changes?

Meanwhile, we need to get started on the draft position selection round.
To do this, I will take an alphabetical list of managers, resquence it based on one set of random numbers, and then assign pick order based on a second set. Rather than asking two managers to submit random numbers, I will use an automated system to do it this year, which provides for faster turnaround, better audit control, and no opportunity for collusion. The results of these two random number runs will be emailed to several managers as they are generated. For this purpose, I'll have them sent to JeffG, Uptown Bombers, Holt, and MBT, since they have recently checked into this thread.
The alphabetical list will be as follows: Dave R filthy Goldcoach Guru Holt JeffG JL loki MBT Slackjawed Yokels Species TD Teguila tilt Tosh Uptown Bombers
Numbers will be generated shortly.

We can begin this process immediately. For now, we will have no clock on this process, but if we lag too much, a clock may be instituted. I still hope to be ready to begin the draft by March 15.
Tequila, you the the first choice to select you draft position. Remember that the draft will snake, so if you take the first pick, your second pick will be the last one in the second round (pick #32).

This morning I sent Yahoo Fantasy Baseball a question asking how the add/drop function will work if we use the same day setting and that day's game has already started for either the added or dropped player. The auto-email confirmation promises an answer within 24 hours. Maybe if we are lucky, their reply will clear things up so we are not voting based on the assumption we are making on how we think it will work.
Here is the link to the contact us form I used.

Question I posed to Yahoo!
I have a question on the "Same Day" roster option since this is new. I understand that we can add/drop players and then have the new player immediately slotted into that day's lineup (provided we are still more than 5 minutes from start time).
What happens if we want to do an add a player after a player's game has started? Will the system still allow that but then not allow the new player to appear on that day's lineup (and therefore work like the daily/next day option does) or will it reject totally and only allow us to make the desired roster moves the next day? What about if the dropped player's game started but the added playerhas not? Will that move also fully reject or at least work like the next day option? Thank you
Response From Yahoo
Hello Jeff, Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Fantasy Sports.
I appreciate your inquiry in regard to Daily - Today transactions.
Daily - Today was previously a PLUS only feature and it enables you to make a player add or drop for the same day as long as that player’s game has not started yet. With this setting your managers would need to be able to make player adds and drops each morning before the daily slate of games starts. Once a player’s game starts you are not able to waive them if they are in a starting roster position until 12:01 AM PT the next morning. Bench players can be waived, but if a player gets injured during a game and you want to waive them you will have to wait until the next day if you had them active.
Players can be added at any time as we automatically place all new players on your bench. If the player’s game is within the 5 minute window they will simply get locked on your bench for that day.
We value your interest in Yahoo! Fantasy Sports. If you have further comments or questions, please feel free to reply to this email, and we will gladly assist you. Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Fantasy Sports.

so by the new potential rule...
I can add and use a player up to 5 min before his game time.
If I add a player after the 5 min window, he goes to my bench (locked) but if I go to the next day rosters I can put him in.
I can drop a bench player anytime, but a playing player cannot be dropped until 12.01 PT (3 am eastern!).
Do I have it correct?

[29] judy - that's how I interpret it.
So the only restriction is that a player who is locked in an active slot cannot be waived until the following day. Any bench player can be waived at any time, and any free agent can be added at any time (although he obviously can't start on the same day if that game is already locked.)
It actually doesn't sound as bad as I had feared.

If this is correct, then it looks like we'll stick with the same approach as in prior years. But I want to make sure that I tallied the votes correctly, and that everyone who has an opinion has weighed in.

My NO was very unsure. My intra-office league voted to try it, and as Guru explained in [33] it is only active players you cannot drop once their games started until the next day. I did use ESPN last year and did like where you could pick up players in the AM, so I'm kinda I'd like to flip flop to YES.

I just need a little clarification on our start date. Guru's initial post says we'll start around the 15th, is that still a go or could we open up the draft a couple of days early? I will plan to activate the draft this weekend. The clock will not start until Monday (3/15), however. The primary purpose of activating the draft early is to allow people to set up queues. However, once it is activated, managers are welcome to start drafting. They should not feel compelled to draft until Monday, however.
I'll start a draft discussion thread when the draft is activated.

[50-52] It sounds like we have 8 votes for next day, 7 for same day (including me), and filthy has yet to vote.
Unless we have a majority opt for change (i.e., same day), we'll stick with next day. But we don't need to make a final decision until the draft results are entered. So if there are other changes of opinion, it's not too late.

Sorry for the flip flop but I want to change my vote to next day transactions. I guess I didn't thoroughly read the rule clarification.
I don't want to be in a position where I have a closer go down to season ending injury during a game and then I'm forced to cut a useful player on my bench so I canpick up the closers replacement. I absolutely want to be able to cut an injured player during the game. Otherwise I'll lose my mind.
