The Dirty Dozen League Constitution
Entry Fee = $20 (Due by Opening Day)
7 keepers
Keeper Deadline will by 11:59 PM Sunday 2 weeks before season starts or they will be picked for you.
Any trade or keeper change after that will not be accepted.
Next Day Transactions - Daily/Tomorrow
Waivers - Continual Rolling List

Commish review, will push through in about 24 hours unless anyone raises any questions. Generally the next morning unless a trade was accepted the evening before.

Somebody else blew up the other 2013 thread so its not duplicated. I fixed the link in the 2012 thread to come here.

I would like to ask that we move keeper deadline back to more than the day before the draft. Maybe keepers 1 week before the draft? Its nice to have some time to look at who is available, who is taken, what holes team have an plan a draft strategy.

I don't have a problem w/ 3/18 to start the draft. Even at 8 days like last year we finish on the 3/26 and have 5 days to settle out trades, waiver wire etc.

But maybe make keepers due 3/11, 1 week earlier? Thats still a month away.

If we stick to keepers due on Sunday 3/17 then we don't have to turn the clock for a couple days. That's plenty of time to plan and strategize during what is essentially a dead period. As long as we start by Wednesday 3/20 that's 10 full days to complete. Nobody wants to stare at everyone's keepers for a week - we want to make picks.

And we are not forcing people to declare keepers an extra week early when its not really necessary. That just more time for people to get hurt or be forced to make keeper decisions 20 days before the seasons starts -- too much is still up in the air then. You want to wait as long as possible, so people have as much info as possible, to make the right decisions on keeping the right players.

Agreed. Keepers should be announced 2 days before the draft starts. No need for any longer time than that.

Also we had discussion last year that the last place finisher pays the draft fee. Is that me? I know I was pathetic last year.

I am going to wait on payments cause I have a lot going on right now and don't have my tracking charts up yet. About to have a newborn and don't want to lose track of checks and such right now.

We are going to do Draftime however its still too early to renew... we ARE going to do last place pays for the draft from here on out (which was Pete) however I think I have a free draft and if that's the case we'll just start that up next year. It's going to be the virtual equivalent of last place buys next years beer at the draft.

Please remember this for guys traded in the offseason.

We can't execute the players going to different teams in the offseason in Yahoo for some reason.
The way you have to do it is that player is kept by whichever team is trading him away.

So if I trade Bryce Harper for a draft pick. I will still check Bryce as a keeper for me.
He'll be an "8th keeper" essentially. Then once keepers process I can reassign him to the proper team.

Similarly, Khahan and I just did a deal with Cain and Lawrie (and picks).
So Khahan will need to "keep" Cain and I will "keep" Lawrie and then after keepers process I can move them around.

You can pre-rank without going into the draft and then import. But I don't think I can turn the draft on until all keepers are entered and trades inputted.

Draftime is turned on. Please make sure all your keepers and trades look accurate. You making your first pick is essentially signing off that your players/picks look correct.

No clock til everyone makes a pick. Then we'll start a conservative 6 hour, move up to 4 hours if neccessary. Please use those ques and keep in touch with the group if you expect a delay.

Go to Draft Central --> Draft Results and then Sort By Team to see your 7 names.

Also the free agent pool should be free of keepers if you want to use that to browse free agents (we are not adding players from it like mistakenly did last year, I will still enter them manually).

I gave strong consideration to Gio Gonzalez. He would be an upgrade over either of my pitching keepers and help this year. But looking at the big picture, Butler just made sense. Solid power, +BA guy with the potential for years to come to sustain what he did last year.

Man...I set a 5 man queue at the start of this draft---2 of the guys are still on it, and one of the guys I selected myself.

Usually my queues get used up pretty fast, but this year I think I must have Canadian valuations on some of these players!

I had a 2 man queue for my first pick. And got both. I'm pretty happy so far. Will be happier if Eaton produces like he is supposed to. Set up nicely with keepers for a while adding Butler/Eaton and managed to do it with 2 guys who will help my team this year as opposed to having to sacrifice this year for next.

Very happy with my team so far. Shored up my keepers and have what I think is going to be a competitive team this year. I was going into this draft just hoping to improve my keepers for next year but no longer writing this season off.

This is the first year I DONT feel like that Barilko. While its nice to get guys Im targeting to fill out my roster, its a little troublesome for me to think I'm overvaluing many players.

Then again, 3 or 4 extra picks in the first few rounds means I come up quite often and there just aren't as many chances to pick apart my queue.

Speaking of which, now for the downside to all those extra picks. I have to go on vacation for a few rounds. No more picks until round 12 I think.

Wow, draft is moving now. I honestly didn't think I'd get to pick this weekend. And the fact that Billy Hamilton was still on the board in a keeper league with 12 teams and 7 keepers, basically got him around pick 200 or so. I'll stash him on the bench until a mid-season call up and watch what happens with steals then.
I'm getting excited for this season.

And my draft is complete!

I didn't have a lot of guys scooped from me, early on I mentioned that AirAllnight had picked a number of guys from the top of my queue, (and later again with Teheran and Anibal), but there was always a good 2nd guy in place, and that guy almost always dropped to me.

My queue was hammered a little in the 10th round as I saw Rutledge, Jansen, Bailey and Frazier all being taken.

I feel pretty good about this team, so long as Braun can give me 150+ games and the SP holds up and/or produces a couple breakout seasons.

Looking forward to this year!

so here's the final tally on all my moves last year:

I traded JJ Putz in 2012 for Sergio Romo in 2013
I traded Evan Longoria for Brett Lawrie and Marco Estrada
I traded Gallardo for Dan Haren (who by the way was a keeper for me the same years I kept gallardo!)

While the actual player traded away and the player received in that specific slot did not always match up to show the best value the extra picks let me be aggressive in going after guys like Eaton, Simmons, Estrada and Butler (though I probably would have grabbed butler no matter what).

I also feel it helped me fill out my active spots with a better overall tier. I didn't have to decide between a SS or an OF in 1 tier and take the remainder from a lesser tier later. In all I'm very happy with my draft, though I wish Lawrie and Eaton weren't injured.

The only pick where I look and say, "oh really, I could have had him?!?" Was Alex Rios when Dom Brown went 2 picks later. Since I had Brown in RIBC he WAS on my radar. While there are a few other players I would have liked to have that I missed, it often came down to choices and I'm happy with the choice I made.

I think Tree is still the team to beat this year. But when you have the keepers he has, its almost a given.

Da Bomb, in my mind has a very risky team. Phillips is getting older. Allen, Reyes and Hamilton are injury/playing time risks. Adam Jones is good but due for some regression from last year. Halladay is iffy but could be spectacular. Middlebrooks will drain his BA. Shields is getting a bit long in the tooth but should do pretty good (kept thinking I should have kept him one more season). He could crash and burn or challenge tree.

GO's keepers are solid and well rounded, but I think he draft was kind of weak compared to other years. With that said, he's going to have some tough keeper decisions next spring training.

Barilko has good keepers but a lot questions: How many games with Tulo, Garza and Berkman miss? How good will Johnson and Dickey be this year? Is Howie kendrick what we saw last year or what we expected to see last year? After Kimbrel will he get a full season of saves from Frieri and Santos?

Astade looks solid until Headley goes down. He's got a good line up but missing some real bench depth and injuries could really affect him. Crawford and Ethier could be nice producers for the draft slots. Can Crawford get 12HR, 25SB and a 280 ba?

Holt looks pretty good to me this year. Peavy, Kershaw, Kennedy is a solid pitching foundation to keep him competitive there. His hitting keepers give him some solid power and a bit of speed. Shoo, Rollins and Victorino round out a good speed set of guys and Shoo and LaRoche will supplement his keeper power cats. But I question 7 solid keepers for 2014 or 2015. But he's got trades and next years draft to worry about that. He looks good to compete for money this year

PD looks like he took my approach this year - retool. He will certainly make some noise this year. He has some players who can pile up counting categories, but his % stats like BA are going to hurt. And I don't see a lot of long term value for keepers in this draft for him. He'll make some noise in the middle of the pack and certainly pile up some stats that directly affect rankings just above him.

DPR I really like this year. His keepers are well rounded. He has some young players for a long-term core to his team. He drafted some players (Andrus, Taveras for example) that can replace any unexpected disappointments. He has a good rounded team with nice power sources like EE, Zimmerman (if healthy), Santana. Some speed form Andrus and De Aza. Nice pitching potential (though I hate to say some of his best pitchers may not hit their real potential until next year). And he has possibly more long term keepers to keep building on for years to come. I think he sees a jump in the standings from last year to this year.

Loki - What does Dillan Bundy do this year? How many games out of Hart and Utley and how is Greinke's elbow? But anybody hoping to take 12's in multiple pitching categories has to deal with you and its going to suck competing with your pitching. Hitting on the other hand, outside of rbi's and HR's seems like it is going to fall a bit short. Maybe you and I should talk trade.

WG/Blue Hen: Getting Gio Gonzalez in round 1 was like an 8th keeper and a perfect compliment to Hamels and Medlen. And Lester in R4, if he pitches like he has in spring training...ok, maybe what I said about Loki's pitching should apply to your team. And like Loki's team you have solid power #'s for hitters but I think you are lacking in speed and runs. BA is going to be a bit rough, too.

My own team - I will definitely see a rise in the standings, maybe on par with dpr's jump. My overall keepers left a smidge to be desired but that was by design, prepping for a stronger draft. I have a solid core of potential keepers for next year. I worked to improve my team BA and my speed guys will be tough to beat but once again I'm a bit low in the power side. My pitching has holes, but should be middle of the pack. I could see this team hitting top 5, but also feel its a likely 6-8th place finisher with a stronger eye towards 2014.

PeterN - I think its going to be another difficult year in the standings for him. But I think he's not looking at this year. I think he's looking to make a splash in 2014/2015. He's got a solid core of players and drafted some nice young guys for 2014/15 expectations to replace any of his solid keepers who fall off the wagon (hanley due to injuries maybe?).

Overall I think this is going to be a great year. I think the teams look actually very balanced from a competition standpoint. We have a clear team to beat in Tree, but we also have 3 or 4 teams I think that will legitimately challenge him.

I also think the next 4 or 5 teams are going to be clustered together, trading spots all season and most of them have the potential to break into the top 3. But then again, this is on paper now. Unfortunately some of these teams are dealing with major age/injury questions. If all goes well they'll hammer the rest of us. If too many of those questions rear their ugly heads, some of the better looking teams are in for a long season.

I think my pitching is definitely my biggest issue. I have serious depth issues there. This is also why I took Harvey/Wheeler trying to find a second SP keeper to put with Cain.

I'd probably move a hitter for a SP if anyone is interested.

Phillips is getting older

Isn't everyone? ;) Still a productive player, and no signs of decline just yet. My team is probably on the older side, but I should be fine unless most of my keepers collapse at once (actually did happen one year). I actually think my team is always on the older side, but I manage to swap in 1-2 new keepers every year to keep the wheels going.

Allen, Reyes and Hamilton are injury/playing time risks.

148 games last year for Hamilton, 160 for Reyes. They've had their issues in the past, but at leat their latest seasons are relatively clean. Allen Craig missed the beginning of last season from surgery after fracturing a knee cap by crashing into a wall. Since this was of the freak injury variety, I don't see him as an injury risk.

Adam Jones is good but due for some regression from last year.

I think Jones came into his own last year, and see little reason why he won't at least repeat his numbers, if not improve upon them.

Halladay is iffy but could be spectacular.

I don't have high expectations for Halladay. His lower velocity this Spring is rather discouraging, but I figured he was worth the gamble in the late 2nd round. Plus I have a soft spot for him as a previous team member.

Middlebrooks will drain his BA.

He's not proven yet at the major league level so it's possible as it's more difficult to project, but he hit .288 last year, and not including a poor 16 game stretch upon getting promoted to AAA in 2011, he's a .300 minor league hitter over the last 2 years.

Shields is getting a bit long in the tooth but should do pretty good (kept thinking I should have kept him one more season).

Not the youngest player, but I'm not necessarily looking for a keeper for the next 10 years when I draft. I've accepted I'm likely never going to draft a Mike Trout, but that's okay as there's plenty of value otherwise in the draft every year to keep competitive. I'm a pretty big fan of Shields after being skeptical about his career year in 2011, but he had another big year in 2012. 220 Ks in back to back years is pretty nice. Will be a good SP2 after Verlander.

Overall, I feel good about my team. I came 1.5 points out of first place last year, and that included injuries/ down years from 3 of my keepers (Votto, Halladay, Arod). I think I'm better this year replacing Halladay and Arod with Adam Jones & Allen Craig as keepers (though I interestingly drafted both Halladay [2nd round] and Arod [2nd to last round] back). I also only mustered up a 4 in the wins category last year, and think I improved my SP staff with Ogando, Tim Hudson & Marcum (when healthy), in addition to the aforementioned Verlander, Shields & Halladay. Beachy may also help in the 2nd half if I keep him stashed that long. I had some issues chasing SBs late in the year last year, so I liked adding the 50 SB potential of Brett Gardner. Excited for the season to begin and for it all to play out.

Middlebrooks is more of an issue in OBP leagues, I think in AVG league like this he'll be ok. While I don't think he'll hit .300, he still shouldn't kill you there.

That's why I said your team is risky. People have been expecting phillips production to start dropping off for 2 or so years now. Maybe he and Aramis Ramirez just age better, but at some point their age is going to affect production. Allen has rep as injury prone. Hamilton has a rep of getting in his own way. Reyes has the injury prone tag. None of that means these things will happen,just that they are at a higher risk of bad stuff happening.

As for middlebrooks - his K:BB ratio simply doesn't support a high BA. 5.38K for every 1 walk. But you'll enjoy some real nice power. Like I said, you have a lot of risk on your team. But if it goes well you'll be challenging for first.

Matthew Berry on the "Guys I Hate List"
Josh Hamilton, OF, Angels (second, third): I am an Angels fan. But the fact remains he is an injury risk, he is going to a much less favorable home park (career .260 hitter in 166 plate appearances there) and, as hot as he was at the start of last season, he was ice-cold the rest of the year; he hit .368 with 21 home runs in April and May, .245 with 22 home runs from June to October, losing 375 points on his OPS along the way. He was essentially cold for twice as many games as he was "Hot Josh." That said, all the numbers count, and it was still a really good season overall, which is why I'd still take him if he dropped to me late in the third, but Tristan Cockcroft and I have the same concern; injury prone and swings at everything (his K rate is up to 25.5 percent from 16.6 percent in 2010).

Not a basketball fan so the time from the superbowl until right about now is sports-barren for me, except for my fantasy baseball (cause lets face it, espn and other sports stations don't give a crap about spring training news over basketball or the tournament).

Wow, what an offensive output. 25rbis! I more than doubled my season total last night. I went from i believe a 2 in RBi's to a 12. Jumped up like 4 or 5 spots in HR 6 or 7 places in BA.

Now I just need to work on my pitching. Really, a full week into the season and my staff has managed 1 win. That's it. Just 1 win.

Kept trotting out guys like Lester who couldn't buy a win last year.

Last year Jacoby Ellsbury went down early essentially preventing me from contending. Now Zack Greinke has a fractured left clavicle which should keep him out for 2 months. Carlos Quentin, a former football player, charged the mound hitting Greinke with a shoulder block causing the injury. Usually they tackle or try to punch the pitcher, but Quentin sucker-punched (sucker-blocked) Greinke. I need the Orioles to call up Dylan Bundy.

Ok, thats a big WTF day for me.

5runs (solid) 4rbis (could be better) 2HR 1 sb normal crappy BA

3 saves, 15k's in 14.2 IP 3.86era 1.09 whip and I LOSE 5 points?

Also, how in the world does a team have 11.5 in W, an 11 in Saves and 11 in K's but a 1 in ERA/WHIP. Poster child for weird team. Oh yeah with a 3 in BA, a 4 in RBI's and an 11 in HR. I know they are not all completely dependent on each other but you kind of expect some correlation between HR and rbi's.

Very odd year for my pitching. I was short on pitching coming in... made the deal for Cain. So figured he was the only reliable thing I had.

He's been terrible! and yet I have 12/12 in ERA/WHIP? what the heck? Fortunate draft picks and pickups of Harvey, Cobb, Bucholz, Masterson. Sometimes you don't have to pay anything for pitching. Of course over the long haul Cain should pass all these guys.

And Bucholz has HOU at home tonight... seems good on paper, but scares me. Due for a blowup? Fingers crossed.

i'd like to propose that we switch to "continuous waivers" for next season.

according to Yahoo, continuous means that all unowned players are on waivers at all times.

as it currently stands, waiver priority rarely means anything. that change would be one that would have a large impact on waiver priority, and will make one think twice about snagging a player.

for me, the game loses a lot of appeal when prospect after prospect after prospect is picked up and hoarded. in the past, most of these guys weren't in the yahoo game until they actually played. now Yahoo adds them in anticipation of them being called up.

having waiver priority mean something will also make it mean something to the team picking up a player - is it worth blowing your waiver priority for that person who may sit on your bench all season.

just a thought...

I always thought that the purpose of waivers was to give all managers a chance to pick up players newly added to an ML roster. It must hold some importance in our league because it has only been exercised 3 times this season. Am I wrong?

yes. that used to be how it works. but now Yahoo adds those players well before they make it to a major league roster, so people pick them up and stash them.

Just talking out loud...but that seems like a lot of evening work, setting up a bunch of waiver claims every night to make sure I fill one spot.

and that's the point.

this change makes one think before making a move, especially if they have a higher priority.

by the same token, this actually makes a high priority mean something, and things should rotate around fairly quickly in regards to waiver priority.

I wouldn't want to use a waiver priority for it. I would imagine waiver priority could rotate rather quickly with this system. And on the chance that a new prospect is added...well most of us will probably have a heads up that somebody is going to be promoted and may be added to the system and can act accordingly. It does add a new layer of thought to the process which isn't inherently a good or bad thing. But in this league I think its worth exploring. I'd love to try it next year.

i was just using that as a frame of reference. day, night, doesn't matter. the waivers run over night, so it doesn't matter when you actually make your picks.

Except when I make my picks without a waiver claim I know exactly who I am getting and when. If I need a 2b I pick the one I like best instead of having to research all the various options an have them all lined up to make sure I'm covered.

I don't know how it would be "baffling" to see how that would take a lot more work and preparation to set up rather than just claiming and inserting whichever player is readily available at that moment.

I like part of the idea of having a claiming process (lining up in order to claim a new closer, or getting first crack at the new hot player) but just think something like that is more feasible in a weekly lineups league. (Which I am also a part of, and we do have in that league.)

Think of it this way barilko - how often do you make a pick and suddenly 5 people come forward and said, "Oh, I was logging in to get him!" It really only happens with closers who are promoted for injuries. If you want to pick up a 2nd baseman to fill in, 9 times out of 10 I seriously doubt you'll have problems with it.

and i've had that waiver pick SINCE THE SEASON BEGAN, and to the best of my knowledge IT'S THE ONLY WAIVER PICK IN THIS LEAGUE SINCE THE SEASON BEGAN.

that's why i'm proposing this change. let's make waivers mean something in fantasy baseball.

I would propose that we just do this for 2014 to evaluate the system. If we like it, keep it moving forward, if not, scrap it after a 1 year trial. I don't know that Im sold on it as I see benefits and pitfalls and I'm not sure how they'd weigh out against each other. But I'd at least like to give it a try.

I definitely agree that the waiver system would enable closers and prospects to be more fairly distributed, I just don't like the idea that I can't go to the Yahoo league and quickly research and grab a player that I want without having to set up multiple claims and drops and adds. Once again I only see the value of that type of system in a weekly league.

If we have decide to do waivers you have to make two actions over different days to get them into you lineup. You have to submi the waiver claim, and then check the next day to add them too your lineup. Now these can both be done in conjunction.

I would not be in favor of this work just to insert one player into the lineup.

somehow I didn't notice the discussion regarding waivers til just now. if this is something that will be put to a vote at any point in time, count on me to vote against it.

it would have zero effect on the number of moves I would make. I would still make any move that I felt improved my team. It would just be annoying because I'd never know what the outcome of the attempted move was til the next day. additionally, I'd be low in waiver priority all the time. so, a that's a huge NO from me. there's no way it would prevent top prospects from being stashed. I don't see the point, other than to attempt to reward inactive managers with an occasional closer.

if there is a player that is injured today and his backup is announced, a manager that is lucky enough to read it first can go ahead and add the backup. i think that's very proactive, but i'd like to see more folks get a crack at it (eg some people check in the evening vs morning) and then weigh it against using up their waiver priority.

our current system rewards people who have instant access to player news/league homepage... and there is little opportunity cost. By actually having a waiver wire system that works, then maybe managers would use some strategy on picking up players AND it would give other managers a fighting chance to have access to the same players during the season.

I know there are a few others that would take the same approach. there'd likely be more stockpiling of set-up men to counteract the ability of anyone ever getting new closers with their waiver priority.

prospects like puig, myers, taveras, etc. are always held on active rosters for eons. there's no new waiver rule that will help anyone with prospects like that.

If that is the strategy you choose to employ, so be it. When someone goes down with an injury instead of the replacement going to the person with fastest mouse, I'd rather league members think about the need to 'stockpile' the player vs maintaining a high waiver priority in order to pull the trigger on a player they actually need.

While I would be opposed to the current Waiver Wire proposal due to both strategical and fun factor reasons, I am curious about an alternative which I would be in support of.

Mentioned above was a hybrid type of waiver claiming system, where once the first game of the day starts, the waivers lock. Otherwise players are able to be picked up and dropped at anytime. Does Yahoo offer something like that? I would be in support of that type of system.

Daily Transactions lets you add guys and put them into your starting lineup immediately. The people who are frozen and can't be dropped are those who are actively in your starting lineup. They get frozen when their game starts (if they are in your starting lineup).

So you can drop anyone on your bench or who doesn't have a game... and you can add anyone you want regardless of if their game has already started.

We use in my H2H league and everyone loves it. Its nice to jump on a 10 PM EST player at 9:55 and throw him right into the lineup.

GO- while that is a very nice feature to make those last minute additions, there is a very big drawback. Often I'll look at players later in the evening and want to make a change for the next day....and I can't. Maybe a player got hurt or you hear about a closer blowing a save and want to get his back up. Maybe you just have a player in a slump and want to make a change. But because the player you want to drop has started for that day you can't drop him and make a change until the next day. Its pretty frustrating, tbh. I definitely prefer the current system to the same day transactions (which is used in another league I'm in).

The same day transactions absolutely 100% rewards schedule over diligence as those who are up early enough get first crack at players as opposed to those who try to plan ahead a little bit.

Again, I'm open to trying something different. I see the drawbacks some are saying about the rolling waiver tree suggested and I don't disagree with them that there are drawbacks. I'm just curious if those drawbacks are really as fundamentally game breaking as some make them out to be.

I've never found I didn't have a guy worth dropping in my other league if there was a guy I wanted to pounce on cause of closer blow up, broken leg etc. Especially in this league with like 6 bench spots - surely at all times we have a crappy bench guy worth dropping. I would think that crappy bench player is first in line to be dropped vs. a player worthy of being in your starting lineup - cause that's why he is on the bench in first place.

Meaning that any player that has had his team already start their game is basically unable to be picked up, but you could always make a claim for said player which then would be processed in waiver wire priority order overnight.

And I'm still gunning for next year. Thought I could do some damage this year, but severe under-performers like Billy Butler, Martin Prado and BJ Upton have shot those chances to h e double hockey sticks.

Billy Hamilton, Adam Eaton and (if he gets healthy) Brett Lawrie are still part of my plans for next year and going forward. Not to say I won't part with them but there is a bit of a tighter grip. With that said, my whole team is out there. David Freese is batting above .350 for the past month. Ian Kinsler is back to being Ian Kinsler. I have 5-cat outfielders like Alex Rios and to a lesser extent Norichika Aoki. Closers like Sergio Romo and Greg Holland (41k's in 26 IP w/ an era at 2!)

I've been getting a few inquiries about some of my players and it obvious I need to be a seller again this year and continue building towards 2014 like I figured last year.

Based on a few offers I got, I'll say here is what I am NOT interested in: I'm not interested in your 30+ yr old players who have a name but no stats this year. I'm not interested in older players having a career resurgence this year. I'm not contending nor does it look like I may be contending.

What I am interested in is draft picks next year, younger stars and young rising stars. Here's a rundown of my players who can help some of the top teams compete this year:

Greg Holland - 1.80 ERA, .91 whip and 60 k in just 35 innings of work. Hasn't blown a save since May 6. His k/9 puts him in pretty elite territory.

Sergio Romo - averaging more than 1k/IP 2.94 era, 1.07 whip.

Travis Wood - young arm, modest K-rate but destroying ERA/WHIP, still! Not just a week or two of fluke games. 2.69 era .97 whip. Yes, a whip under 1 after 117 IP.

Lance Lynn - potential keeper. 113k in 112 ip, .367 era, 1.19 era on the best-record-in-baseball St. Louis Cardinals.

Matt Latos - maybe not a sexy name, but just 26 yrs old, keeper quality stats for the past 3 years. Era under 3.50 whip under 1.2 and 185+k's every year for the past 3 yrs.

Adrian Gonzalez - Long in the tooth these days, but Agon is still getting it done. Batting average still around .300 with 13 hr so far this season. His power seems to be coming back a bit. Dual Position eligibility at 1st/OF.

Norichika Aoki - potential for 25-30 steals AND double digit power plus a BA hovering around .300.

Alex Rios - used to be the ultimate every other year player. Yet he's now doing his thing 2years in a row. Even in his down years he put up double steals and homers. But his BA is right around his career norm which speaks to a good season - .281 BA, 11 HR, 19SB, 46 R, 41 rbi's going into the break. A 5 cat contributor

David Freese - his counting stats are low due to an early season injury and slow start. But he's a solid producer at 3rd, BA around .280 with counting stats starting to accumulate

Martin Prado - yes, he's been a disappointment and his slow start along with billy butler and bj upton have really contributed to my team being where it is. But he's batting .270 over the past 30 days and .313 over the past 2 weeks. He's starting to wake up and when he does, he can contribute 15-20hrs and sb out of SS/2nd/3rd/OF. Ultimate utility man

Billy Butler - young kid, slow start. But he's pulled his BA up to .270 (and climbing) and is starting to show his power again. Look for strong 2nd half contributions.

Ian Kinsler - well he's Ian Kinsler. One of the top 2-3 2nd basemen after Cano is off the board. And doing it again this year.

I think I got Nelson Cruz in rd 10 or later in my ribc draft. There was definitely a list of guys who might be suspended. Was surprised to see people still drafting Braun in the top 5.

Anyone interested in stashing Weeks? Except for one very good stretch, he's had a horrible year. He could very well come around later, and next year, to be a top ten 2nd baseman again. I'm only looking for a draft pick upgrade of some sort.

Was wondering if there is any interest in changing how we do keepers for the 2015 draft. What I was thinking would be nice for some teams is rather than forcing 7 keepers on all, allowing us to keep UP to 7 players. For every player under 7 you keep, you get a compensatory pick before the draft starts. They'd go in the same order as the normal draft.

It just seems a little more sophisticated than a blunt number. Obviously making this change for the 2014 draft would give certain teams a distinct advantage (mine being one of them as the quality of some of the young talent drafted didn't pan out - I'm looking at you adam eaton).

Anyway, just curious if others would be up for this kind of a change. It wouldn't be unprecedented to change our keeper status. We started out I believe as a 4 player keeper league and slowly built up to 7.

We talked about that in another league. I didn't like it--if there is a guy on the bubble (which there is in almost every keeper year) you can throw him back and essentially draft before everyone else from a richer pool of players.

Exactly PD. I see that as a good thing, though I can understand why some would see that as a bad thing. I can reward poor drafting. But it can also help bottom end and mid-tier teams recover from bad luck, too.

i would be ok with maybe awarding a pick after the first round, then another after the third, or something similar. (with a limit of up to two total picks).

Thats an interesting way to do it, too, Tree.

1 other option to consider is tying draft picks to the round you picked them in. I think BH picked up Segura in the last round. So if he keeps segura he loses his last round pick. Obviously we'd have to work out details for the first year going from a 17? round draft to a 24.

I guess the bigger question is this - do the managers want a more sophisticated keeper system than we have? I'm perfectly fine keeping the status quo, but something with a bit more thought to it may be fun. Or not.

I don't mind Khahan's first proposal as it allows teams with weak keeper lists more alternatives to improve outside of trading for extra players (something people should likely be doing more of; there are 2-3 guys a year who are top 50 values that jsut cant be kept). However would be strongly against the second alternative as that would mean a completing different type of league where the time people have spent building their current keepers was wasted.

What would be our goal here? Is it to allow the teams at the bottom more opportunities to improve their keeper lists? If it is, end of 2nd does very little to accomplish that as a player who is the 25th (or better) best player who would be available should be available for a very small draft pick upgrade. If our goal is not to help these teams, then what are we trying to accomplish? If we are looking to change things there needs to be a strong motivation for that change, and I am not clear on that right now.

Part of the motivation, honestly is to stir the pot. The league has been kind of static for a few years now and a more involved keeper strategy (I think) would help.

But I'm also trying to think of a way that won't necessarily punish good teams and exclusively help bad teams. Even a 1st place team could be weak on keepers. Whether they have a handful of spectacular players and the rest are really solid or they have 7 good keepers but they want to move younger.

Look at Josh Hamilton on Da Bomb's squad. Maybe Da Bomb thinks, "ok, Hamilton is just off adjusting to a new park this year, he's gotta bounce back next year so he'll be my 7th keeper cause I have to take 7." Or maybe he now has the flexibility to say, "I'd hope hamilton can bounce back next year but I just dont think he will. I'll let him go, keep 6 and get a compensatory pick."

Or imagine if in 2011 at the end of the season somebody had Utley and said, "he's been good, but I think his best days are behind him and I think he'll hold me back next year but I have no real better options." Well now that aging team has a better option. Throw Utley back for a compensatory pick.

Some of the teams at the bottom are there because their players just suck (*coughbjuptoncough*). Others are there due to injuries. And there's no doubt they could benefit. But It certainly can also benefit competitive teams to move to this format as well.

Saves and SB are 2 VERY close categories for all you guys at the top. I still have sergio romo for Saves. Alex Rios (with the added bonus of putting up keeper worthy stats the past 2 years) is also available for a boost to your SB.

Looking for pitching to close out the season. You can get Dan Haren who over the past month has 3 wins, 1 save, 30k's in 33IP with a 2.45ERA and .79 whip.

And while travis wood has showed some signs of the long season, he's still sporting a 3.13 era and 1.10 whip on the season.

Middling round picks are always nice.

that may have played a small role, but i am in contention and needed to make a big splash to accomplish what i am hoping to.

i believe WG has the same thought process. we both made some sacrifices in hopes of improving in other areas, as he also is in contention. the deal could backfire for either of us, or it could be a boon for either of us.

but you don't win if you don't take risks.

Just think if my hitters hit all season like they have the past 30 days. 5 guys batting over .300, 3 guys at .295+

Whats irritating is I had drafted with certain guys in mind as keepers and they flat out sucked for 4 months of the season. So I picked up a few other guys to go forward next year and now some of those original keeper guys are making a case that they should be kept again.

And of course while my hitters are finally hitting, my pitchers are falling off a cliff (except for Latos).

I have to vent somewhere. I absolutely despise the changes that Yahoo Fantasy has made over the past month or so. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The fantasy football pages look horrible. The player and team pages for baseball look the same. Everything dark and links moved to unfamiliar places. Some links and info I can't even find anymore. I'm not amazed that someone came up with such crap. I am amazed that someone approved it.

Makes me want to break things. Even the damn box scores are black. AHHH!

PS: I've found a possible temporary solution. The Canadian Yahoo sports pages still use the old format.

They overhauled their whole page. If you look at their notes at the top, they flat out state, "We are listening to your feedback regarding our recent redesign . While we will not be going back to the old format, we will be focusing on improving the readability of the pages, along with other improvements. We appreciate how passionate you are about Fantasy Football and welcome your comments."

If they were listening to our comments they'd know to switch back. There are hardly any positive comments. At all.

I wouldn't mind switching all leagues I'm in to espn or some other site next year.

I've commished the AAA and AA ribc yahoo leagues the past few years. I've been a big supporter of Yahoo and have always loved their product. Until now. Just can't get behind these changes. If we can get all our leagues changed (which for me is 1 casual office league, this league and the ribc league), then I don't mind transitioning.

ESPN has far superior free agent sorting to Yahoo. Its so much easier to sort things out with a couple clicks and find players -- you don't have use the stupid drop-downs to set your same parameters every time.

You also can pick guys up until the first game of the day -- and use them the same day. Once the first game starts they essentially "turn the page" and your pickups go to the next day.

and you know another one that all the Yahoo folks blindly ignore? you can see the opposing pitcher at all times for your hitters. Not only the default screen where you set your lineup but ALSO in the free agent sort.

Thats a good question, I'm not sure. Perhaps BH would know. They use this "Player Rating" system which I don't entirely love but its because I do prefer Yahoo #1 ranked guy type logic... whereas ESPN uses similar to WAR rating logic where a player is hurting your team i.e. a -1.5 player or helping a little at +2.7 player or major impact top guy is Mike Trout who is a 16.6 Player Rating. They have that rating 7, 15, 30 and Season.

I prefer the yahoo ranking system as it is much easier to quantify. We all know what top 25 means, top 100 is a good starter, below 150 is replacement level or whatever. I have no idea if 4.5 is good or not.

Its only easier to quantify because "we are all know" and are familiar with one and not the other and you don't know who is rated what. Once you see and use it it might actually be easier to trade a couple 6.0 players for a 12.0 player. I think that's the idea. Its just a different point of view.

That is certainly part of it, but one system tells you that a player is say the 12th best, whereas the other you just get that impression based on past results and don't know exactly. However, ESPN does give a better job of quantify the differences and would highlight tiers.

Also, I would be pretty worried if there system actually was supposed to do as you say as I would not trust it to be very accurate.

But dpr, my question is about how flawed the yahoo system is. Yes, a player may be ranked 12th. But that is based on his performance in a standard 5x5 roto league (which we are, so its good for this particular league).

Thanks! Much closer than I thought it was going to be but I wasn't able to closely manage it the way I would have liked down the stretch with my lack of free time. So fortunate I was able to hold on.

per 350 - yes as Khahan says Yahoo ranks are the same... so Adam Dunn is say the 157th ranked player whether you are sorting through free agents in an OBP or AVG league. It can be very deceiving. I can't compare to ESPN cause both of my leagues there use OBP.

Congrats GO! It seemed there was a tight race for the top spot nearly all year but you blew ahead towards the end and didn't look back.

I think both ESPN and Yahoo have their benefits and drawbacks, so I'd be ok with either platform. I like how on ESPN you can sort FA by team, so if you know a team has an early start or favorable matchup you can just target FA there. I dislike a lack of rank on ESPN... their page shows a last 15 day player rater but that can't be changed as far as I know. I dislike how, on both platforms, you can't sort by Probable Starters for a day beyond tomorrow. Would also like to see opposing pitcher on the FA page on Yahoo like ESPN has.

Re 342... GO, I believe we can change Weekly Deadline to "Daily - Today" from "Daily - Tomorrow" on Yahoo and that will allow us to match ESPN's ability to pick up players til the first game of the day today.

Tree can confirm but I told him I was very confident I was gonna win this thing months ago even when I was like 5th place and you guys were all swapping the lead. I didn't feel the need to give up any high picks to get it done.

But it still came out way closer than I thought it would be. I just couldn't seem to buy a HR. Mainstays like Prince and Pedroia had extended HR droughts... and Buster Freaking Posey?! he had the quietest horrific 2nd half I've ever seen. I stopped playing him altogether in Sept. except on off days.

WG - its scary that you didn't find the other ratings on ESPN cause you might have dominated G20 even more.

One of the headers above the player pool has that... "Research" perhaps? Has that same rating score but for 7,15,30 and Season. They just default that 15 day in the free agent sort so its quick and easy to see who's hot the last few weeks. I much prefer this to going through those stupid dropdowns every freaking time in Yahoo... I do 30 or 14 day total and selecting every time in every league is tedious.

I think I was the team in the lead (or one of them) when you were projecting your team to climb the standings. What was it which gave you confidence? I believe our innings where fairly even although I used them earlier than you did I believe. I feel my team lost points primarily in hitting due to Miggy and E5 being injured and unproductive much of the last 6 weeks of the season. Obviously injuries and slumps happen, and my team was relatively healthy the majority of the season, but just curious what you saw at the time.

I couldn't tell you the numbers exactly but I felt like I was WAY behind on IP at the time with easy K and W points attainable.

And then just really only needed HRs on the hitting side so it was easy to focus there. Picked up like 5 points there despite Posey, Prince, Pedroia and Starlin power outages.

Losing Harvey almost derailed everything though and I think that's where my " closer than I thought it would be" probably came from.

Actually I used GO's strategy in another league with some work buddies. I was in second place, between 10 and 15 points behind almost all season. Last friday I took over 1st and cleaned up over the weekend. I just spend the past 2 weeks making up inning lost and catching people going from a 1 in k's and W's to a 7 in k's and a 9 in W's.

Well its really not ideal cause you get stuck picking guys you don't really want to start down the stretch... and actually in this league I didn't even use all my IP so I didn't execute it perfectly. I tried streaming as early as August but no matchups were jumping out at me.

Almost 80 hours of work a week and a newborn not sleeping certainly limited my attention this season.

My pitchers were just fascinating too. I had none worth keeping in the offseason... then did the Cain trade who was supposed to be my anchor to build around and was TERRIBLE. But guys like Harvey, Cobb, Bucholz and Masterson carried me to good ERA/WHIP and I got them via draft or free agent. Niese late in the year was huge to offset the Harvey loss.

Harvey was also my #1 pick. Was that where he was being drafted or was that a big reach? I definitely went all in on him and was right despite the injury stuff.

Well I got myself into a bit of a pickle for this year. I took a pretty balls-to-the-wall, bang or bust approach to my draft last year. Not to do anything last year but to be in a position to do something this year. Let's just say I'm not starting off with a bang here. I'm going to have a weak keeper list and am already down my 1st round keeper (though I did pick up some extra mid round picks).

Yeah we'll vote on that. I think we'd need a 2/3 majority to do the move that big. So 8 yes votes.

I do prefer ESPN for baseball so I'd be one vote. I set my teams much quicker with quicker free agent sorts and lineup setting and love the same day stuff.

Yahoo redesign was pretty bad but has greatly improved over the last couple months so I will take a look at my other Yahoo MLB leagues and compare. The option of white backgrounds does help, the black was terrible.

My preference is for yahoo for the same reasons tree listed. I prefer all my teams on 1 platform and if yahoo hadn't made further changes I would encourage all my leagues to abandon it. But I dont really have a problem with the way they are now and my other leagues wanted to stay put.

I can't exactly pinpoint what I remember being better on ESPN since its been a few months but I always do note in my head how it is a superior format to Yahoo for hoops and MLB while the season is going on.

One interesting observation... those that have used both all seem to steer towards ESPN as well. With the only negative opinions seem to be just because they don't want an extra website.

This has always simply been a keeper league, not a prospect league. I say if you want to go into prospects, use roster space. Many of us, myself included are doing that now, carrying over players like billy hamilton, early drafting other players. But switching to a prospect league changes the dynamic.

I don't think I'd be in favor of carrying over prospects or anything -- but I'd be cool with an in season prospect slot so you could stash the guy and then free up that bench spot to get a credible starting guy off the waiver wire. Then if you want to keep that guy you still have to use a keeper slot on him from year to year.

I would also be cool with converting one bench spot into an NA instead... as this league does have many bench slots. Don't think we'd need to add anything like extra rounds.

As I continue reshaping my roster I have a handful of quality players who can help contending teams this year. Still looking to trade Ian Kinsler and Alex Rios. Will consider picks or players.

Kinsler is stll a potential 20/20 .280 BA at second base. Ijust think by the time I get my roster settled and am competitive again he'll on the downswing. But he's a great for for managers competing over the next 2 seasons.

Alex Rios was a big surprise putting up a .280 BA and 40+ SB with a power dip. He should have a bit more pop in 2014 in the Texas OF and would love to keep him. But like Kinsler he's a better fit for somebody competing now.

Then in the pitching side of things I'd like to move at least 1 of (probably not more than) Jordan Zimmerman, Lance Lynn or Matt Latos. All young pitchers with good arms and solid era/whip ratios on competitive teams that should score them lots of runs.

I'm not sure about deadlines. I know we want to do the draft about 10 days before season start. So deadline for keepers a couple days before that.

But part II of that is do we try and start the season for the Australia games approx 8 days before the rest of the games? Yahoo can retroactively give stats for those games which is interesting. I'm all for ignoring them and just awarding retroactive points. Most guys worth starting like a Goldschmidt or Puig or whoever will be kept anyway so there won't be a whole lot of drafting to capitalize on those games. So if you want to waste a draft pick a guy who got a few hits, I say go for it. Those AB's are such a small % of your season total.

Question on retroactive games, lets say Kershaw gets absolutely bombed in his start in Australia, are we basically giving his owner a free pass as to whether he "would" have started him or not?

I guess this also goes for batter who might throw out 0-6's or maybe a no-name guy that hits 4 home runs and then gets drafted in the 25th round or something like that.

I know my other league has voted unanimously to not include the 2 early games due to those issues that were brought up.

i think the answer is simple - if you've got one of those players on your roster, you're automatically playing him. you're not drafting Kershaw to bench him in the season opener.

Ok, that would settle things for undrafted guys.

What about if I have two 3b eligible guys on my roster that just happen to play in that game. Am I automatically forced to start the highest drafted guy? (Even if he was drafted as a prospect?) Or the consensus highest ranked guy? Or what if I have an OF that I drafted in round 17 that I didn't actually want to start that weekend?

Do we declare starting rosters prior to the games?

Not trying to be difficult, just rehashing a day's worth of debates from my other league.

We have two. Hard to imagine someone have 3 backups they could not fit in when we are only counting one game and will not be dealing with full teams at the time.

I think the answer is simple - we are drafting to be ready at the start of the season. The season starts on day 1 of games...which is the australia game. We draft to finish for that date. I have no clue where this silly idea that we draft to start after the season has started came from.

There are no other games for a week after that one day. The retro scoring is simple and done automatically.

If the games start on March 22, why dont we aim to have the draft done by march 21. That way, any players drafted are completely up to the the managers decision and attention rather than some convoluted system to be used after the fact?

That way there is simply no confusion and like in every other year we have a few days downtime to settle rosters, look at FA and make any last minute changes.

Otherwise, what do we look at? The first day of game or the last day of spring training? If we look at the first day of games barring these 2, we are looking at March 31 (San Fran @ Ariz). But if the goal is to get thru spring training and have 0 chance of changes from spring training injuries etc, then we look at Apr 1. Most teams have spring training games on march 31.

Keep it simple. First day of regular season play is March 22. There, have all this done by March 21. Catch the double header (which itself will cause issues w/ the questions raised above as that will affect some guys playing time) and catch the 'opening day' game. There is no need for special rules. No need to second guess anything. No chance of "But thats not fair to me,I wouldn't have done that!" starts.

There are so many practical reasons not to push the draft to finish after March 22 when we have our first games. The only reason people have to start before hand is because they dont want the downtime. Well guess what... you get the same amount of downtime. Its just a question of is the downtime all once before, or broken up by the draft w/ a 6 day chunk of downtime where we can manage our new rosters?

In years past I've always argued for starting sooner rather than later. I'm not asking to finish weeks or even a week before the first official games. Just the day before so we can control our decisions and rosters.

We'd have to have the draft done and players inputted by like the 20th which is like 10 full days of spring training we'd be passing on just to force those 2 games in. So we'd have to have keepers and draft start like 2 weeks before that.

There are a lot of spring training battles, injuries etc that definitely won't be decided that early when we would be drafting (start of March) and then we'd just be sitting around staring at the last 1/3 of spring training when tons of decisions are being made.

It does look like you can pick and choose who is involved with getting credit for retroactive lineups. So we could do where whoever you have in your lineup for opening day 3/31 would count (you pick the date to pull lineup and it basically just adds those games as though they were played that day)... and/or only keepers would be allowed to be started that day.

The easy solution is a combination of what is already listed above.

The draft freezes during the duration of the early games being played, and anyone drafted after that time will not have their stats counted.

And then if any manager wants a player on their roster to not have their stats counted for those 2 games must post their intention on this site prior to the beginning of those games. Otherwise all eligible players will be retroactively awarded stats.

Thats pretty good as we'd have to start around then anyway. So pretty much it'll just mean keepers are eligible for the retro stats anyway. And I'd probably lean that way to keep it simple.

because if you have a player playing in those two games, you may want his stats to count.

you're going to have several players - Hanley, Puig, Goldschmidt, Kemp, and so forth losing out on two games simply because they're opening the season in another country.

i'm baffled that anyone would choose A. why would you want two games to outweigh 5,000 games? with a week left in spring training, there are many important position battles still being waged.

for now, i choose B.

what about a fourth option, one that dictates if you have a Dodger or Diamondback on your roster when the draft is completed, their stats count. period.

if Kershaw has 16 Ks and a shut out, good for him. if he bombs with 1 k and a 18.00 ERA, tough luck.

There isn't THAT much information learned in the last week of spring training. There may be a few closer jobs not named, but not much else of huge significance. Every manager is on the same playing field either way.

I'm baffled that anybody could vote against A, Tree. But here we are with different opinions.

As for forcing a dodger or diamondback on the roster to be counted, why should a rule instead of a manager's choice have any say at all in determining a single start? Why should a manager gain or lose any stat for any reason other than his own decision making? To me, there is absolutely no reason for that to happen. Which leaves A as the only plausible choice.

Here's what choices boil down to:
1. Have 6 days of slightly changing information, finalized position battles and WW/FA period that we can make adjustments to our rosters to compensate for any chances we took in an even playing field draft

2. Have 2 games where managers either get the benefit of hindsight to make decisions or have a rule force managers to make decisions they may not normally have made.

So far looks like:
A) khahan, da bomb, PeteN. Barilko (4)
B) perm dude, tree (2)

Holt has not really committed to B or C yet but we effectively have 7 votes in so far.

For the record, last year we ended the draft on March 26. In 2012 we ended on march 21. In 2011 we ended on March 15.
Ok even I admit the 15th was too early. But why are we suddenly so gung ho on pushing out a few days of spring training this year when we've always given ourselves a few days in the past to let our draft settle, let WW clear, made trades or pick up FA we missed etc?

How about another option - We look to have the draft finished by say the 25th, right in line w/ our traditional finish time. Any player drafted before those games, you can post here when they are drafted that you want to start them. No matter what, they are then started. If you dont post, they dont start. In the final rounds any players we'll be picking up after the games on the 22nd will most likely be a very minor impact if any impact at all. Its basically a compromise right down the middle. Managers who want to make sure they get to choose those games get a reasonable chance to get players they want and start them. Managers who want more spring training info get a bit more of that info.

It is not just the final week we would be missing. We would be starting the draft with 3 weeks to go of spring training. Maybe the first couple rounds don't matter with regards to spring training but closers start to go quick and poeople start to use picks on players with potential in position battles (plus injuries altho those are less prevalent in baseball)

In terms of Khahans last paragraph, that is better than A, B, C but may be more complicated than GOs keepers only. Who wouldnt choose to start a keeper? Or anyone drafted in the first few rounds?

I completely agree. With weeks left in Spring Training, rotations are still being set as well as some positional starters, and they will be being set right around the time we'll be looking to draft them. Rushing the draft to capture what are, essentially, Spring Training days that "count" is probably going to hurt many more teams than it would help.

Also, with GP limits, capturing those game for your team means you'll have fewer games later. I'm unwilling, myself, to worry about those early games and if I end up with Diamondbacks or Dodgers, are likely to sit them anyway because there are so many questions about them at that point.

Yeah the "start your keepers for retroactive stats" idea isn't forcing you start them either... you could just as easily opt to not start them. We'll just have that declared for all to see which guys you plan to start when keepers are due (before the Australia games) and you'll get their stats (or not). Its that simple.

Agreed. I think it's simple enough. I think it can even be expanded to noting which drafted players you'd like to have stats included as well, as long as they are declared before the start of the games.

It's not like we are all going to have to go to the trouble of announcing a huge amount of guys. At most it might be 4-5 guys.

Thats why I'm proposing the compromise of finishing in between. Right where we traditionally finish. By that weekend, we'll have any players from those 2 teams we are likely to start and we will have the choice of whether or not we want to start them.

Also, PD mentioned a games played limit...something we dont have in the dirty dozen for position players. So by skipping those games we actually are putting managers from players on those teams at a disadvantage.

If we go with a March 25 target end date, our schedule could look like this:
Keepers declared by Friday March 14
Draft start sunday march 16. We should be thru at least round 8 or so by the time the 22nd rolls around. Any players we draft then are most definitely starters, but just come to the board and declare: drafting martin prado, intend to start. By the time the 22nd passes, we are are into 4th and 5th starters, non-declared closers, 4th/5th OFs, rehab fliers etc.
And for reference - 2012 started on 3/13
2013, started march 18.
Going for a 3/16 date is right in line with when we normally start.

Thanks, Khahan--I had forgotten positional players had no limits here. I know we have a 1400 IP limit (that I'm always bumping up against) but had forgotten that positional players were not constrained.

Still--these are two spring training games, essentially. Not worth worrying about having their stats count for my team, whatever that might end up being. It seems unlikely that even the stars of the teams will play more than standard spring training amounts during those games.

Its not weeks...its a week. If Kershaw starts (and he will), Mattingly will treat him and the game like any other regular season game. Because its a regular season game. Arizona and LaD will either be 2-0, 1-1 or 0-2 after those 2 games are done.

As for the people arguing 'its just 2 games of stats out of thousands,' I'll ask this question - how often does the season come down to somebody needing "just 1 more win or 2 more saves" or "1 more HR and I have enough points to win the championship?

I'm just a little bummed that I traded a draft pick for Adrian Gonzalez thinking that I'd have a 1B keeper to replace Konerko but now it looks like I may not be able to keep him after all.

When there were 8 teams in the AL and NL, places 5-8 were referred to as the 2nd division. If I do not screw up my draft and can avoid significant injuries, I think I can finally escape the 2nd division this year with my current keepers.

Re 494: No suggestions and planning because the league has been around for a long time and runs smoothly.
No chatter because we are all getting older and our interests lie in playing.
The leagues that seem to have the most chatter are the main RIBC and RIFC leagues and the one's that Judy runs. I always have liked to be in one of Judy's leagues, but she prefers ESPN.

Retroactive 2014 Plan
Our rules will be whoever is in your lineup Sunday Night March 30th will get retroactive stats for the 2 Aussie games. The caveat for our league is that they must have been drafted in Draftime (or keepers) by 11:59 PM Friday 3/21 (1st game is 4 AM EST 3/22). Everyone drafted after that is ineligible for retroactive stats as well as the 3/30 Dodgers/Padres game.

We also will need to list here before that 1st pitch in Australia which guys we plan to start. I will crosscheck that list vs. who is started on Sunday Night 3/30. If you do not post a list of intended starters for Dbacks/Dodgers you cannot get retroactive stats for these games.

Note: Retroactive stats are applied only to players in active positions on the date that retroactive stats are run (Sunday 3/30).
Teams do not receive retroactive scoring for players on the bench or DL positions.

Please note: It is not possible to re-run statistics within a league. Therefore, if a manager in your league did not set their lineup appropriately prior to the running of retroactive stats, they will not receive scoring for games prior to the league's draft.

Our draft will start Monday untimed -- but everyone needs to get their orders pre-ranked and ready to roll. You can Pre-Rank in Draftime without the draft being turned on and you already have most teams keepers posted here. No time limit until all teams make 1st pick. 6 hours after that.

That should get us through approx the first 12 rounds (7 keepers, 1 round per day) and I can't imagine there will be too many valuable guys worth starting in these games anyway beyond that.

i really don't wanna see a tighter clock unless we need it.

i timed out in another league - TWICE - something that i am pretty sure had never happened to me - because i was at my season opener kickball games, and the ball fields get awful data reception. so i couldn't see if i was up, and for the first time ever, no one messaged me to let me know it was my turn.

i'm not mad, because i still ended up with the guys i wanted in those slots, but i don't see a reason for a tighter clock yet.

draft hasn't started yet, and knowing GO like i do, i feel like he would be lenient in allowing someone to choose another keeper if they found out one of theirs went down with a season-ending injury minutes before an earlier-than-previously scheduled keeper deadline.

seriously - the diagnosis was announced minutes after our deadline. i don't care whether he trades for another keeper, or keeps someone different from his roster. but i do think in the interest of fair play and sportsmanship, Astade should be allowed to remove Corbin from his keeper list if he chooses.

ultimately, though, it's up to GO.

Go-I do not want to start the AZ players in the game that Kershaw pitches.

dpr-It did not register that I had 4 DBacks on my team until I listed my starters for the games in Australia. As far as the Dodgers, Puig and Greinke were keepers, and Janssen was my experiment with going against CW and picking a closer early.

Yeah, its considered a doubleheader because its technically occuring on the same day I believe... and for our purposes its a tripleheader day with the 3/30 game.

So you need to asses starting/benching the same way you would if it were a regular doubleheader and Kershaw were pitching one of them.

For some reason I can't select tomorrow as Retroactive Stats day... is it too late? Seems odd. I suppose Tuesday would be ok since LA and AZ both play that day. It would have to be the backup plan. Ok - I think its just worded weird - first available date says Monday but I think thats means that they run Monday at 3 AM EST -- for whoever was in your lineup for Sunday night game.

Does not - but when you click the little news popup it does say eligible positions, R/L or RHP/LHP and ownership, ADP, Gamelog w/ stats and you can click the popup and add them right from there (or see who owns). Yahoo popup doesn't give you that.

Yahoo DOES have ESPN beat with the League Availability on their popup. Pretty cool to check all leagues in one spot.

Yeah - I get you can find them on the Schedule tab but seeing that players schedule for the next week isn't really a stat that helps me decide if I want to start them that day vs. that pitcher. There is plenty of space on the default My Team tab to put the opposing SP right next to opponent -- and then i can see Last 30, Last 7 type stats or click over to Split Stats but have that opposing pitcher name stick to the left of whatever sort I'm using.

They obviously have the data built in - its just a matter of mapping it to a better accessed spot.

No matter what I sort by in ESPN --- batting average on tuesday day games vs LHP who are over 40 years old if I want... it tells me who my opposing pitcher is and I can check his LHP/RHP if I don't remember.

I'm in a weekly league where you make claims on the weekend only, and then your lineup locks for the week, and then waiver claims mean something.

As for this league, the only time waivers matter is if you're claiming someone who was dropped or someone new is added to Yahoo, which means you are right, our waiver system has minimal value.

Astade are you just now noticing this or just never thought about it? Cause its been that way forever in most of these baseball leagues.

There do seem to be some other options where everyone is on waivers all the time and it just processes like a couple times a week or something like that. I can't see all the processing options cause I would have to switch in order for the options to come up.

The problem is it would really tie up people from managing their team from day to day. Like I can't plan some moves out tomorrow... say add a catcher by dropping a SP and then moving a guy into another roster slot - if I have no idea if my claim is gonna be successful. Many times one move is contingent on another. I need to know step 1 is completed before I do step 2.

Yeah, there is no ideal situation for baseball unfortunately. Those closest to the computer will get the hot adds during games and teams reporting injuries, but with baseball there isn't really a "good time" to have claims like there is in football.

What if players were just perpetually on waivers and all waiver claims were cleared daily? I don't know if Yahoo supports this or not.

But since we don't have same day adds anyway it would give everybody a chance at those players (at least everybody who actually checks in daily) and player pick ups are actually based on waiver priority. It gets rid of the 'first to the comp' race. Look at the Yankees closer situation. I found about it that evening, the same day it happened. When I looked I already knew their new closer was gone. But he was gone before 5pm in almost every league that day...while I'm still at work.

I think I've argued against this idea in the past (maybe in another league or maybe in this one?) but I'm starting to come around. I would think by now yahoo or espn or some other site could implement a waiver process that doesn't delay adding players to the roster too long (IE - Robertson goes down. 3 managers put a claim in on his replacement today. Waivers are cleared tonight and tomorrow that player is eligible to be in the roster).

Like I said, its an interesting idea but I know for me would severely impact my management of my squad from day to day. Many times you make moves for tomorrow and you need to know which way the dominoes will fall.

Its bad enough we don't have daily transactions in this league (ESPN does!) If I'm trying to add a C and SS for tomorrows games... I can't put in a bunch of waiver adds and hope I don't get stuck with 3 C or 2 SS or whatever combo I don't need. I need to know I added the C, and now because I got that I can add the SS.

Plus, who has time to set up waiver claims and order and re-order them an analyze that - its a pain enough once a week in football trying to gameplan what order to put what guy and which position.

khahan, I agree it would level the playing field for all managers to have a shot at picking up 'replacement' players.

In my mind, the more important aspect is that it actually makes waivers a part of the game. Early in the season, I would be hesitant to pull the trigger on a fill-in reliever for just 1-2 weeks worth of service if I had the #1 waiver priority. It would add strategy to claims as opposed to now where you really just keeping hoping your pick-ups generate some value and you keep cycling.

Waivers are the most annoying part of fantasy football. I wouldn't want to deal with them on a daily basis. Ever since smart phones with data plans became prevalent I've missed out on 95% of the races to get a new closer. I can deal with that. I like having the freedom to make moves at any time.

They are both on your bench when I look at 3/30 the date we used for the retro stats (and also when you look at 3/22 and 3/23 where I assumed it copies that starting lineup from 3/30).

I tested one other guy and Loki has credit for all 7 of Trumbo's HR's... (one of which was hit in Australia) and has him in his lineup 3/30.

It does kick in eventually Loki. Last week from Monday to Saturday my team was 36/174 for a .206 BA. Combined in that week fro 13 runs, 15 rbi, 1 hr, 2 sb.
Sun and Monday I went a combined 23/62 for a .371 BA 16runs, 7 HR, 13 rb's and 5 sb.

I had watched Tanaka and Abreu all winter and had planned on taking them with my two 1st round picks if they were available. They were, but I listened to and read so many "experts" that I took neither and picked 2 much inferior players who are both on the DL.

Frustrating yes, but you gotta keep a positive mind - otherwise I'd bag the season. I'm experiencing this in multiple leagues.

And Abreu I looked at it and had on my list based on mock drafts for about round 8 in ribc's and maybe round 3 or 4 here.

Looking over the draft results and my real need for power I'm kicking myself hard for taking Sandoval 1 pick before Abreu went.

So far my r1 pick is completely tanking the season batting .203. And my rounds 2, 4, 6, 7, 12, 14, and round picks have hit the DL along with one of my keepers. Out of that group, Middlebrooks (round 12) was the only 1 I wasn't truly counting on. Even my round 14 was supposed to be a potential keeper/core of my OF and he's out for the season.

But here's looking at a long term project. Last season I picked up Billy Hamilton. This season from my draft class yelich is starting to stand out a bit, I got fransisco lindor riding the bench until his callup and its still a long season. I've still got plenty of time for production from Cobb, Gee, Calhoun or Cingrani. Out of those 6, 1 of them has got to pan out as a sure-fire keeper to go with Billy Hamilton and start a nice foundation for seasons to come!

And you've got a nice core foundation to build around Loki, with Goldschmit, Puig and Rizzo.

Even though I'm in the same boat as Tree and Khahan, and that had been a major reluctance for me wanting a change, I wonder if anyone have experience with the espn mobile app? The yahoo app sucks and I do most of my checking by phone, so switching away might actually be more convenient for me if the espn app is an upgrade to that crap that yahoo has

I use both and they are both ok - one thing I do prefer on ESPN is that on the lineup screen when a guy is out you get the big red exclamation point - which makes it really easy to quickly see someone out of the lineup vs. the x/^ which can be tough on the Yahoo app when looking on a small phone. Its better on my new phone. I can't say anything else jumps out otherwise.
I do prefer Yahoo's anchor system where with one touch you can get back to your team list vs. hitting the back button to pick another team on ESPN. If you only have one ESPN team it wouldn't really matter. I have multiple on both platforms.

We've definitely got plenty of bench spots and I think the idea at the time was for that reason - they basically are NA spots leaving room for long term planning in this keeper league.

So the question for this league is do we force the NA or just leave as a regular bench and that essentially makes it a BN/NA/DL spot by being a normal bench spot. Leave the option to plan long term... or not.

Man nobodies team is very good this year. Looks like most years finish with 4-5 teams over 80 right now. Could be a result of low end teams not throwing in the towel just yet or just increased parity starting from the bottom but I am surprised with how even it is across the board.

All depends on Davis. I either traded away my best pitching chip for a 3rd rounder or I ripped off Barilko big time - only Chris Davis will tell.

With that said, I'm still in the market. 2 closers out there for trade and if you need Steals I still have alex rios and eric aybar. Neither offers tremendous power, but both will get you double digit steals in the second half, help the BA and each are on pace for 85-100 RBi's and runs.

Yeah it was a big risk for me and definitely selling low on Davis. That being said I'm happy with day one of Lester and also happy that Hammel's drubbing came before I added him!

All in all this is an excellent trade for both sides, Khahan gets a weighted lottery ticket and I get the starting pitching I needed.

I'll only be happy if I take it all though!!!

Well Melky certainly showed up today, 3/5 w/ a HR and some rbi's and runs scored.

I'm a bit confused though by something else entirely. Stat tracker shows me losing 1/2 point in BA. Only 2 people gained points in BA, Pete N who batted .290 on the day and Jam Kill Block Chop who batted .273 on the day. My team batted .300 on the day. So I have a high BA today than either of them and lose .5 a point to one of them?
I would guess Pete N, but going into today he had me .26933 to .26876 on the extended BA.

Maybe its a bug in stat tracker and it will work itself out tomorrow?

If all my players have superb 2nd halfs, I think the best I can do is about 75 points. Of course that will not happen, so with the exceptions of Goldschmidt, Puig,Rizzo, Ellsbury, Pederson, Bundy, Sale and Greinke, my other players are available.

This has been a miserable year. It began on a bad note when I listened to too many "experts" instead of following my original draft strategy. I had 2 1st round picks and had planned on drafting Abreu and Tanaka and instead picked Rosario and Trumbo. The way the draft played out, if I picked one before the other (I forget which one) I think I could have drafted both. However I changed up and that set the tone for my season. I would appreciate a thank you from the managers who drafted them, even with Tanaka's injury. Next I followed my usual modus operandi and was impatient giving up on free agents I picked from the waiver wire way too soon. My team underperformed in general and Yasiel Puig specifically. Puig not only stopped hitting HRs, but he stopped stealing bases. I needed some FPs for some of Puig's catches in and throws from the outfield. The final blows were Cliff Lee and Paul Goldschmidt suffering season ending injuries.
As Dodger fans in Brooklyn used to say after their perennial World Series loss to the Yankees, "Wait 'till next year."
That bridge is still available for draft picks.

The trade between hoboken and team canada for round 24 is obviously the last round pick. The others are a little trickier but clearly from the numbers we are dealing with late round picks no matter what. I think we should let the trades go thru as is and let hoboken and holt simply post which picks they intend and also let hoboken and dpr post which picks they intend and simply make the adjustment manually at draft time next season.

Definitely neck and neck going down the final stretch. It's just down to dumb luck at this point.

Several of the categories are still bunched up enough to cause big daily fluctuations. I'm also in a tight race in RIBC but there is enough spread in most of the categories that we aren't seeing much daily change. Fun fun fun. Between this and fantasy football in full swing I don't know how I get any work done.

Congrats DPR! Great season you had. I knew the RBI's could swing it so it was pretty disappointing to see J Peralta get benched after the Pirates loss clinched it for the Cards (although DPR also had Holliday benched). It also stunk when A Gonzalez got pulled after 2 AB. I had to pull for Blackmon the leadoff man to drive in a couple runs. I was also hoping DPR's pitchers might stink it up a bit and drop him into all the 1.20 whips but of course they all pitched well. Anyways, good job DPR. Well deserved victory for you.

I enjoyed playing despite my disappointing results. I cannot blame the 11th place finish on injuries to Goldschmidt and Lee as inept managing seems more to the point. I am looking forward to 2015 and have a pitcher named Casey waiting in the wings who should win the pitching categories for me. As the Dodger fans would say in Brooklyn when the Dodgers lost in the Series to the Yankees nearly every season, "Wait 'til next year."

Holt-I like the Dodgers to go all the way this year. I think the post season will be dominated by Kershaw much the way Orel Hersheiser dominated the heavily favored A's in the 1988 Series. When the 1988 series is discussed, the focus is usually on Gibson's HR--I watched it live, and it truly is memorable. However the post season really belonged to Hersheiser.

It looks like I traded my 17th round 3 times, although I am surprised that Yahoo let this occur. I should change professions and apply for a GM position.
A suggestion to resolve it could be for Hoboken to trade rounds 17, 16 and 15 in return for a draft position equal to the difference in draft picks in the original trades, i.e:
Hoboken 17+Rajai for dpr 14
Hoboken 16+DeGromm for Barilko 9
Hoboken 15+Duffy for Holt 10

Usually those trades mean "last round available".

So that means the picks should increase in round corresponding to the time if the trade.

The first trade you make for your 17th rounder gets your 17th rounder, the second gets your 16th rounder and the last gets your 15th rounder.

Barilko - we have a 24 man roster. In our draft program rounds 1-7 are keepers so GO is simply knocking them out and starting round 8 as round 1.

This makes it easier to follow trades for round 1 picks. Either way, his intent was to trade his lowest available pick each time. Keeping that in mind, we can call it round 24 or round 17 but its his last pick either way.

I am traveling the 26-29th for a wedding and while I should have access will be managing more on autopilot. I would prefer to be in mid-late rounds for this period where it would be easier to leave queues as needed.

This draft moves really fast so over 4 days we could get through 10 rounds. Hard to look that far out without getting an extended period to catchup on who has been drafted which I am not sure I will be able to have while traveling.

We also have the clock off on weekends so you really only need to worry about Thursday after you leave and most of the day Friday. Other than that you wont time out at least.

Keeper Update
Would anyone be against noon on Thursday 3/19 for a bit earlier keeper deadline? And then we start the draft maybe Friday morning with no timer until everyone picks (and over the weekend).

I start a new job Monday 3/23 and have a wedding that weekend. Figure I have a much better shot at getting everything setup for the draft on Thursday/Friday while I'm watching the opening days of March Madness.

With Dee and Billy Hamilton and Christian Yelich I'm pretty solid in SB so I'd be looking for a good power bat or a pitcher upgrade.

Getting closer!

Just a thought....I've seen a couple leagues now with issues and debates coming up because teams not getting their keepers in on time.

Do we want to set up some sort of penalty for late keepers to ensure we don't have the same problems?

One league I am in there is a penalty of a 5th round pick if you are late. The pick is then awarded to the last place team from the year before, and if there is more than 1 team late (there never has been), then it goes to the second last place team, etc.

Just a thought and a way to stifle any potential debates.

The loss of a draft pick would save you from having to make arbitrary decisions and also would be an implementable penalty for the owner who didn't get those keepers posted.

Although looking at last year's standings, having your skill involved in picking their keepers is a pretty sizeable detriment too.

I think I only ever remember twice in this league where keepers weren't in on time. And one of them they were simply 5 mins late. The other they were in first thing the next morning.

Don't think its really an issue for us and I would think the idea of not getting to pick your keepers is a pretty steep penalty.
And especially this year with keepers due by noon and draft starting the next day I think GO is pretty much going to see the keeper list, input and move on so there wont be any time for 'hold on, I'm just an hour late.' kind of requests.

Actually, I like a later draft (especially in an established league). It helps keep things straight in my mind, and often the later player information helps me avoid drafting mistakes I might make in the early drafts.

Agreed. The later the draft the better, so long as it finishes on time! But I don't think we've ever had that as an issue.

If you draft too early you end up getting stuck with guys like Wheeler and Darvish much earlier than you should.
