Okay........the draft is complete, and I have (hopefully) entered in all of the draft results into ESPN all over again. Please review your teams for accuracy. There are a lot of Rodriguez', etc so I could have made errors.

All players are now on waivers and are open for pickup through the normal waiver process.

Get your lineups in for the 20th/21st for the Australian games! Good luck to you all!!

From slizz:

2013 SEASON IN REVIEW

Draft Objective: Complete roster overhaul and find 9 bona fide keepers for the 2014 season while competing to be in the top half of the league in 2013.

I finished 19th...so much for finishing in the top half. However, I wouldn't consider the finish to be a total loss. I was on my way to finishing somewhere near 11th-13th when opportunities presented themselves by the way of trades:

-Rex Brothers, Jarrod Parker, and Liriano to WG;
-Koji Uehara to Ref;
-Bonifacio to BH, etc.

While those players would've helped buoy my place in the standing, I felt trading them was in the best interest of the team for future seasons. It should be noted the picks acquired for those players helped net me some pretty good prospects in the p-draft.

That said, I knew I could make up ground in pitching, but I had no idea how bad my offense would be. It's extremely difficult to makeup any ground when one's offense is so anemic (11 points total). Moreover, my roster overhaul is nearly complete and I should be set for future seasons.

I only have two regrets about the season: Not making a deal with GO for Starling Marte (I think he said Marte was mine for a 5th) preseason, and cutting Danny Salazar after he was first sent down. WG had the smarts to pick him up on Waivers and he was immediately called up weeks later. Those are two obvious keepers that I would love to have.

To give you an idea how bad my team was going into the year, here were my keepers:

1. Justin Morneau, 1B, MIN - Run of the mill 1B
2. Dustin Ackley, 2B, SEA - While Ackley won't be anything more than a Michael Brantley going forward, 2B eligiblity this season is a steal for BMD....
3. Todd Frazier, 3B, CIN - my best keeper...yuck. Don't get me wrong I think hes a good player, but to be the best keeper on your entire squad?
4. Dee Gordon, SS, LAD - thought he'd pan out...guess not.
5. Cameron Maybin, OF, SD - see above
6. Darin Ruf, OF, PHI - see above
7. Jonathon Niese, SP, NYM - solid player, just not a keeper
8. Jarrod Parker, SP, OAK - keeper quality, just not an elite one. (Package for Jon Lester)
9. Addison Reed, RP, CHW - my only 2014 keeper
10. Tyler Skaggs, SP, AZ - renounce and call-up. Awesome long-term grab by Species.

2014 KEEPERS

Wow...what a difference. It's nice to finally have some guys who are worthy of being kept for a change:

1B - Chris Carter, 27, HOU: After having the least amount of RBI's and second worst HR and R last season, I needed some power. Chris Carter is still young enough where a "breakout" is possible (see Davis, Chris), but if he doesn't, his power will be a big upgrade over Justin Morneau.

2B - Anthony Rendon, 23, WSH: Was the consensus #1 bat in the 2011 MLB Draft and has tore up minor league pitching. That said, I don't think he will ever terrorize MLB pitching...however, I am optimistic he could become a .350(ob%)/20/90/90/5 type player in his prime.

3B - Nolan Arenado, 22, COL: While I think Arenado is a solid player, I don't think he will ever be more than a Tier 2 3B. In this league, thats a keeper. Would like him to get more stolen bases...

SS - Jonathan Villar, 22, HOU: One word can describe this keeper: Speed. I am largely devoid of it, and he should give me similar production to Everth Cabrera circa 2013...plus I have Correa up by the end of the 2015 season.

OF - Dominic Brown, 26, PHI: Elite potential to be a 30/10 guy. If he could only improve his OB% a tad.

OF - Oswaldo Arcia, 21, MIN: .222 isolated power in his minor league career and profiles as a potential 30-homer hitter in his prime. By 2017, the Twins could have a lethal middle-of-the-order trio of Buxton, Sano and Arcia.

SP - Jose Fernandez, 21, MIA: No explanation needed.

SP - Jon Lester, 30, BOS: The veteran of my team. While his age isn't exactly screaming long-term keeper, he is a solid pitcher and #2 on just about anyone's staff. I'm hoping he builds off of that sizzling postseason performance where he only allowed 6 runs in 34 innings and am excited to see what he brings to the table in his contract year.

RP - Addison Reed, 25, ARI: Great K/9 and has improved each year he has been in the show. I'm hoping he continues that trend and racks up another 40 saves.

All in all...I finally have a strong foundation to build on where I can be a contender for seasons to come. Combine that foundation with Correa, Bryant, and Giolito, the sun is finally rising for my team. While I don't think I will even sniff the top 5 of the league this year, I don't anticipate I will be putrid like last year...

PROSPECT DRAFT

After the odds were drawn, I got 1.04. My first thought - where is Pete drafting? 5th...damn! I pegged him for Gray if he didn't get 1.01 as he already has Hosmer and Singleton, so Abreu was out. As a result, I knew hitters would go 1-3 and I would have no shot at Bryant, Polanco, and Abreu at 4...I immediately sent Judy a congratulatory email for her winning the draft and gauged her interest in trading down.

To my surprise, Judy wasn't expecting to win 1.01, had someone she was really interested in, and thought he would be available at 4. Immediately, I thought "Maikel Franco" and made an aggressive offer as I would have to act quick. Knowing Franco would be there @ 4, I figured a nice jump in the s-draft first round and a mid-rd draft pick would seal the deal.

My board:

1) Bryant
2) Abreu
3) Polanco
4) Giolito
5) Gray

In a perfect scenario, I would've been elated to pick 1.03 as I would just have taken the leftover hitter...unfortunately, that didn't happen. I knew 4 would've been a reach for Gioltio, but I didn't want to risk not getting him either.

pick 1.01 - Kris Bryant, 3B, CHC - Top hitting prospect with a floor of Josh Willingham with infield eligibility...could rise to be a top 10 mixed league pick. Figured it was worth the risk over Jose Abreu as 1B tend to be easier to find then 3B...hopefully that risk pays off as I already have Arenado.

pick 1.17 - Lucas Giolito, SP, WSH. I was trying to move up to get him as I was afraid that someone else in the teens might want him. I sent emails to GO, Ref, BH, and even WG about moving up in the draft to nab the #4 player on my board. GO made it known he was looking to acquire mid-rd draft compensation so I originally made an offer of s-draft 1.02 odds for 1.17 and Matt Moore...right before he traded Carlos Beltran. Obviously, he nixed that deal...but he wasn't opposed to trading down to the 2.02 pick. If he did not get back to me, WG and Ref had no problems moving down. Needless to say, I was making sure Gioltio would be on my team.

As per Baseball Prospectus, he should challenge Buxton for prospect supremacy in 2015 and Brett Sayre of Baseball Prospectus/Dynasty Guru has him at #17, and had this to say:

-Fantasy Overview: Four-category contributor; impact potential in W, K, ERA, WHIP
-Realistic Ceiling: The best fantasy starter in baseball
-Realistic Floor: You mean there’s another option here?

Hence, my excitement...

SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT

Like every owner, I identify players that I want on my team and script the first 5-6 picks and guys that I want on the team and could be keepers in the future. This year was no different. Here were my targets (by round):

1.09 - Best available Closer...preferably Perkins
2.02 - Avisail Garcia
3.02 - Rick Porcello
4.02 - Jarrod Parker, A.J. Griffin, Dan Straily (leftover A's starter)
5.02 - Marcell Ozuna, Ben Revere
6.02 - Tyson Ross, Nathan Eovaldi

Late(r) Targets: Tyler Skaggs, Sergio Santos, Derek Norris, Drew Pomeranz

1.09 - Neftali Feliz, RP, TEX - My pre-keeper closer rankings were 1) Cishek, 2) Perkins, 3) ehhh...really didn't have another option. Ref ended up keeping Cishek thus making my chances of landing Perkins slimmer. Had I stood pat with the p-draft, I would've got Perkins. Trading down put that at risk and, sure enough, he was taken after 1.04. By the time 1.09 rolled around, it was take Casey Janssen or a guy with upside in Neftali Feliz.

2.02 - Avisail Garcia, 23, OF, CHW - Probably a *TAD* early for Mr. Garcia, but I didn't want to risk someone taking him in the 2nd round. He looks the part (6'4 230) and has an excellent excellent bat (.400+ BABIP in 2012-2013, and has been north of .300 his entire career):

Avisail Garcia - Fangraphs

He doesn't walk a ton, but at the same time there is a lot to dream on as far as fantasy baseball is concerned. If he continues to develop, he has the potential to be a Carlos Gonzalez type player for my team.

3.02 - Rick Porcello, 25, SP, DET - Its no secret that I have a man-crush on the guy. He has improved in every single season and has improved his strikeout rate as well. He’s striking out more than 7 batters per 9, walking fewer than 2 batters per 9 and has a groundball rate above 50%. From 2000-2012, here is the list of pitchers who have finished a season with that mix: Halladay (4x), Carpenter (3x), and Hamels (1x). In 2013, the pitchers on that list are Felix Hernandez, Doug Fister, and Rick Porcello. That's some good company. With the defensive additions Dombrowski has made, I anticipate some of those groundballs won't be hits like they were in 2013 (I'm talking about anything hit on the left side of the field), Porcello could be a fantasy star!

4.02 - Michael Pineda, 25 (could be 29 b/c he's Dominican), SP, NYY - Honestly, I was surprised/disappointed to see all of target pitchers had been selected! Do I reach on Ozuna? Do I stick with the plan and go Starting Pitching? I check the board, see Ozuna is ranked below 20 or so players that are still Free Agents, and figure he is probably safe for another round considering his high 200's ADP...so Starting Pitcher it is! But who?

At the time of this pick, Pineda was coming off of a really strong Spring Training start. His rookie year fastball was around 95mph and he hit 93 during that start. He was one of the higher ranked pitchers left on ESPN, so I just went with it. Hopefully, I'm rewarded for taking a flier on him.

5.02 - Marcell Ozuna, 23, OF, MIA - Underrated Power as his minor league numbers suggest he will be a 20/10+ type player. Excellent defensive range so he will continue to get playing time. If he was selected prior to 5.02, B.J. Upton was the other player in my queue.

6.02 - Nathan Eovaldi, 24, SP, MIA - Back to Back Marlins?!?! what am I thinking?!?! Probably a round too early, but considering I traded my 6.18 pick for Lucas Giolito, it was now or never for him...His fastball averaged 96.2 mph last year, the fastest of any pitcher with as many innings pitched in 2013. Pitching in spacious Miami, hopefully he ups that k/9 and maintains a solid ERA and WHIP.

8.02 - Derek Norris, 25, C, OAK - My first of two (2) draft faux-pas. I was working an overtime detail, added three names to the queue: Tyler Skaggs, Derek Norris, and Sergio Santos (in that order). I hit auto-select, didn't follow what was going on, and I get a text message from Dave (BH) stating "Norris?" I respond something along the lines of "yeah, he's on the list with Santos". I get a response along the lines of "lol", so I check and realize I took Norris over Santos. Considering 4 teams didn't have a Catcher yet, I figured Norris could float another round. Like the player, just not at Round 8. All in all, Platooning him with Jaso (he kills LHP, struggles vs RHP), I should hit Catcher minimum starts with a top 5 position player in the aggregate (I hope).

8.20 - Aaron Hicks, 24, OF, MIN - My second faux-pas. I was hoping to get Santos this round as I really didn't have a backup plan. Jaydog takes him at 14, I'm left trying to figure out where to go. Didn't really care for any of the hitters at 8.20, so I just went with someone young who has upside. Hate this pick because A) I have 4 Outfielders and B) he will break camp in AAA as Pressley is out of options where Hicks still has them. Ugh.

10.02 - Erasmo Ramirez, 23, SP, SEA - Post-hype sleeper. Hoping he can be a serviceable 5th starter for me and capture some of that magic that had him hyped last season. Was very close to selecting Phil Hughes and felt he would be there later where Erasmo would not.

10.18 - Yonder Alonso, 26, 1B, SD - This pick is the equivalent of a 3-wood off the tee on a par 4. This came down between he and LoMo. LoMo has the sick upside, but also a really low floor. Alonso really doesn't have upside, but doesn't have downside either. Before he got beaned, he was averaging 3 HR a month, will hit in the middle of the Padres lineup, and should be a safe bet for 15-18 HR with the potential for 100 RBI's. Safe, conservative, pick.

11.02 - Jordy Mercer, 27, 2B/SS, PIT - After selecting Erasmo, I wanted this guy on my squad to provide adequate depth to help get the stats for 2B and SS on off days. Little known fact is he MASHED LHP to a tune of 1.152 OPS in 89 plate appearances last year. If a LHP is starting vs. Pittsburgh, he might find his way into my lineup.

12.08 - Jesse Chavez, 30, SP, OAK - Really wanted Hughes here...was disappointed to see him selected by GO...that was the only reason I traded with BMD was for Hughes. Went with Chavez as he was fixing to be the 5th starter, added a cut fastball to his repertoire and has been impressive this spring training (16 2/3 IP), 16k, 2 ER.

12.09 - Drew Pomeranz, 25, SP, OAK - Top prospect who fell on hard times in Colorado. Call it a hunch, but Oakland has a way of turning around pitchers.

13.14 - John Jaso, 30, C, OAK - DH for Oakland, gets on base, and will hit when Norris is facing RHP. Good platoon split.

PICKS I LOVE

These are picks that stick out as great fits and represent value over some of the others...

1.13 - Aramis Ramirez, 3B, R9 - Still effective and should stabilize R9's bottom line.

1.15 - Mike Napooli, 1B, YR - How did he last this long?

1.20 - Matt Wieters, C, Pete - Was considering him at 1.09...while he may never put up Posey levels, he is still a guy who can put up a line of .320/23/75/75 like clockwork.

2.04 - Lance Lynn, P, Guru - Will be solid again and outperform some keepers

3.01 - Francisco Liriano, SP, REF - Wow, what a steal.

3.08 - Kole Calhoun, OF, BMD - Has the pedigree to be a solid player...plus will be in a really good lineup.

3.10 - A.J. Burnett, SP, BMD - The phillies might be terrible this year, but Burnett has always been solid and strikes out a ton of batters.

3.14 - Brett Gardner, OF, JD - Top 100 player who will put up keeper like numbers.

4.06 - Alex Wood, SP, Darkside - Ugh. Wish I went with him over Pineda. I bought the sizzle, not the steak.

4.18 - B.J. Upton, OF, BH - Has to justify that contract...right?

4.20 - Ervin Santana, SP, WG - I was talking to Amit (WG) when he made the pick. More about the rumor that Atlanta could sign him with Medlen going down and Minor ailing. Needless to say, Home Run because he will go to a pitchers park, will play in Miami and cavernous Citi Field.

5.07 - Mark Melancon, RP, MJD - Good hedge, will eat innings and provide solid ratios.

5.11 - Dillon Gee, SP, Tosh - Loved him and Niese in this round. Just solid players who outperform their draft positions.

5.19 - Kyle Lohse, SP, REF - Lohse won't ever be an elite fantasy option, but he doesn't hurt ERA / WHIP and will help Ref stay atop the standings.

6.17 - Ike Davis, 1B, GO - He can't be that bad again, can he?

7.13 - Brandon Morrow, SP, R9 - The talent is there, will he stay healthy?

8.01 - Tyler Skaggs, SP, Species - Sooooo close to owning him again. He will be much better in Spacious LAA.

8.18 - Nick Franklin, 2B, BH - 15/15 type player with middle infield eligiblity

9.08 - Dustin Ackley, 2B/OF, BMD - Great value here. After he got demoted and came back up...he really raked the ball. If he can continue where he left off, thats a top 10 2B.

10.01 - Mike Leake, SP, Species - Not a ton of K/9 upside, but entering a contract season and is only 26 years old. A lot to like.

10.10 - Trevor Cahill, SP, GL - Not a huge Cahill fan...but the second starter on the Diamondbacks. Can get an early jump on the season with pitching.

11.01 - Grady Sizemore, OF, Species - Given his hot spring, if he can get any production from an 11th rounder...its good value.

11.17 - Phil Hughes, SP, GO - Hughes should be around 8k/9 and is an extreme fly ball pitcher. He played in the worst park for that. He now goes to the best park for flyball pitchers. Win for Hughes. Win for GO. Easy sub 4.00 ERA.

12.03 - Darin Ruf, 1B/OF, Pete - If it wasn't for Amaro, he would get the everyday AB. I would've taken him over Alonso but know hes getting sent to AAA in favor of Mayberry, Jr. and Abreu because they do not have options left. Ladies and Gentlement, your 2014 Philadelphia Phillies! If he got the everyday AB, he will easily hit 30 HR.

I wanted to take a quick second to publicly call out MJD for something good.

I've given him some grief over the years about slow drafting. But I was in two leagues with him this year, and he was near the fastest in each league. Really appreciate the effort you're putting in. Good luck this season.

Thanks... I guess.

I don't recall any complaints about my drafting. In fact, going back through 2011, I checked all my drafts, 22 on Draftime and another half dozen on MFL, and I have zero time outs. It's true I'm not an early riser, living on the east coast, but I do have access most of the day.

I think you may have me confused with someone else. We've had many conversations, but none about my draft speed, or lack thereof.

I've been in a bunch of RotoGuru Invitational leagues with Judy as commish and I know she would vouch for me, as well as several others in this league.

But no matter... not a biggie.

Also Slizz - that's amazing. My summary is shorter: "Stay healthy."

I think we should have everyone do one, like RIBC. The rationales are fun to read.

Team Species recap:

Call me the Houston Astros or Chicago Cubs. Got to tear it down and rebuild it on the backs of the best prospects in the game. While I have no intention to make a mockery of the integrity of the league and the standings, in my view every roster spot should be used to extract value for the future.

It started with a bit of reverse psychology, as Great One and I executed a trade that included Jurickson Profar for Evan Longoria. *I* gave up the top prospect in the game for the veteran....but Longoria was only 27 at the time and I felt very comfortable having him as a staple for my team and my 2015 strategy. This deal included '14 picks for GO while giving me '15 picks.

Then I started disposing of "current" assets for future assets:

- Traded of top 5 SS Ian Desmond and Mariano Rivera to Jaydog for Twins 3b stud Miguel Sano, a prospect pick and high 2015 picks.
- Joel Hanrahan went down so I flipped Andrew Bailey to Pete for a 3rd.
- 3 days later Pete bit again, taking Jose Veras off of me for a 6th.
- Traded Howie Kendrick to Tosh for a 5th
- Traded CC Sabathia and Curtis Granderson for Carlos Santana and a 3rd for 6th swap.

But eventually you have to strike and cease trading for prospects and picks and get a strong keeper piece....so I traded a 1st and 3rd in '15, a 2nd in '14 and a prospect pick for injured former almost-MVP Matt Kemp.

That more or less shot my wad....although I did peddle John Lackey to WG for a '16 4 for 7 swap.

Going into the offseason, Matt Harvey went down with an elbow problem requiring Tommy John surgery. I hit Jaydog up that day to plant the seed early. I must have sent him a dozen emails starting in February to try to get a framework of a deal that would work. We finally were able to come up with something that works and pulled off a 3-for-1 where he got 3 nice pieces for this year, including Chris Archer who has some possibly keeper value. I got my man in Harvey, the 2nd ace I had wanted to acquire for the future. It is a risky move, but the recovery from TJ is pretty standard, and Harvey is a top 10 type stud.

One of my other priorities was to acquire another high prospect draft pick to take advantage of 4 pretty studly prospects that were available: Kris Bryant, Gregory Polanco, Jose Abreu and Jonathan Gray. I was able to trade Indians SS prospect Francisco Lindor to Guru to acquire his pick. Going into the lottery I was sitting pretty with the #1 and #4 spots in the lottery.

Too bad for me the lottery fell really against me, and 2 low ranked teams caught the 1st and 2nd spots....leaving me the #3 and #6 picks. I desperately tried to move up from 6 to the 1st or 2nd slots, talking to both judy and mjd. No dice.....so I got Abreu at 3. I was NOT thrilled with the options at 6....I gave serious consideration to Gioloto, but felt I would rather have a bat, and Gioloto was probably 3 years away so I opted for Corey Seager. As the first round continued, Gioloto kept getting passed up. When darkside didn't take him, I browsed those in the mid-teens to see where I could trade up. When he fell to GO, I desperately tried to trade up but was outbid by slizz. Again. F***er.

As the S-Draft approached, I had picks in the 3rd, 5th and 7th that, quite bluntly, were significantly more valuable to others than they were to me. I had conversations with 3 contending managers, and hell froze over when Ref and I came to a deal. He got me 3/5/7 in '14 and I got his 2/4/7 in '16.

So, incredibly, I entered the S-Draft with NO PICKS until 8.01. The focus of my draft was to grab undervalued assets that could appreciate in value in order to be peddled. My main targets were going to be setup men that could inherit closer roles based upon injury or ineffectiveness. Sadly, everyone else already had that strategy in the rounds leading up to my picks, so I was SOL. I got some guys that did fit the fill though: Beckett, Leake, Brett Anderson, and Grady Sizemore. I grabbed the Minnesota setup men as Perkins is rumored to have some soreness. I did get two legitimate prospects in Tyler Skaggs and Arismendy Alcantara that could help.

I'm sure I'll flip some assets during this year, but either way I have 9 pretty strong keepers and a boatload of 2015 picks:

C - Santana
1b - Abreu
3b - Longoria
SS - Bogaerts
OF - Myers
OF - Kemp
SP - Felix
SP - Harvey
SP - Stephenson

I'm very excited for this year!

I am not sure why dealing with me is like hell froze over? I think if you polled the league that I am pretty easy to trade with. If you want a win-win, I am your man. It is pretty hard to trade when you are trying to get the better of the deal all the time. There are some people who always start so lopsided that I am not wasting my time. But if the offer comes to me which is good or can be tweaked, then let's do it. I would say a majority of the offers that come to me don't help my team at all. It really has to fill a need or help me in some area while I jettison someone that is extra or doesn't help me as much.

It seems that Species has a pretty low standard for hell freezing over.

I assume all teams are trying to help themselves in any trade, and the arbitrage comes from different player valuations. But it's hard to quantify: I think I lead the league in both "Most Managers Traded With" and "Most Accusations of Being a Tough Trader." Certainly also leading in "Most Controversy."

I think it's awesome that after all the chatter about Burns, we still let Species get him.

And BMD cornering the market on Reds closers - I think he's the current paper champion, so far.

Right, but from my perspective Nathan is now just a trade chip to me with a short shelf life since I am now not a contender (pre-trade, post Profar injury).

This possibility was also part of the reason I kept him over Granderson, Napoli etc because closers have more immediate value to contenders. My hitters were so impossibly thin one injury would have that side of things collapse and that already happened.

I have also struggled my entire time in this league to ever have a SS. I have offered the world for guys like Tulo, Hanley and nobody ever budges. So its painfully obvious you gotta overpay in advance and go all in on them panning out.

Its also a 40 year old closer, a 30 year old oft-injured basestealer and my oldest keeper SP. I want nothing to do with aging basestealers as they start a pretty rapid decline as their legs go and we all know Ellsbury was injury prone even in his youth. I can see Ellsbury being awesome for a year or two and then not even being a keeper beyond that. I can't wait for that time to trade him. To me Gio is the hardest piece to surrender as is in his prime -- but he's still my 4 best SP keeper commodity and I still have Alex Meyer coming up behind that.

Side note... I really like Joe Kelly. Had him last few months last year. If he can hold off Carlos Martinez for the 5th gig then I feel like I can decent replacement stats for Gio.

His Post-ASB numbers in 2013? 9-2 w/ 1.91 ERA. Obviously he won't keep that up but I think he could be a decent starter. Hoping he has a good start and gets the chance to do it again. The Cardinals have a such pitching depth its incredible.

2014 Dues notice

Contributions to the prize pool will again be $15 per head. All returning members of the league are participants in the prize pool, and are required to continue each year.

In addition to the prize pool, we collect dues each year to cover any league costs. Since we are no longer paying a site hosting fee, we are again assessing only $2 per head for dues this year. This pays for the draft at Draftime, and also for a trophy to be purchased at the end of the season for the winner.

So, the total amount to be paid is $17. If you are sending this via Paypal, please send it to davehall@rotoguru2.com, and designate it as a Personal Transfer - payment owed. This should eliminate any fees charged. In the message simply say G20 dues.

If you are sending by check, please email me and Ill provide the mailing address.

Allhair, Blue Hen, BMD, Jaydog, and Species have enough money on account to cover the payment, so they owe nothing.

Darkside and Toral each have $3 on account, so each of them owes only $14.

I believe everyone else owes the full $17. If you think you have funds on account that I may have overlooked, please ask.

Please send in your dues payment as soon as possible. Let’s make April 7th the deadline. I’ll start harassing after that date.

RE: GO / WG Trade

Every year there seems to be a trade that sets off fireworks and discussion on this board. This year is no different. After setting off fireworks in my own deal involving Matt Holliday, I have learned one must be patient before jumping to conclusions. I think "Gurupie 20" has great managers who know what they're doing and will do what they believe is in the best interest of their teams. Lets review the trades that set off discussion:

2012 - Holliday / Freese / Boesch for Maybin / Rendon / Bogaerts. I was ripped for giving up so much for a bunch of nobodies.

Fast forward 2 years: Both sides won. Ref got Holliday, Puig, Bradley Jr. as a result of getting his draft picks back. I traded Bogaerts for Jose Fernandez and still have Rendon. While I am a believer in Maybin, PD cutting bait ended up being the right move.

2013 - Stanton / Hosmer / Dahl / Rondon for Fielder / Choo / Scherzer. Everybody was quick to rip Pete N. for all but giving BH the championship. What ended up happening? BH finished third behind WG and Ref.

Was it really a bad deal afterall?

To me, that was a win/win for both sides. BH now has his championship window wide open and Pete has two of the best keepers at their respective positions...plus a pretty sweet prospect in Colorado.

2014 - Ellsbury / Gio Gonzalez / Nathan for Javier Baez and Joe Kelly. That is an awfully rich price to pay for Javier Baez, but GO got his guy. He will undoubtedly have middle infield eligibility, easy 20/20 #'s, and could be one of the first few picks in a mixed league, non-keeper draft. GO is banking that he might get that in return. Even if he doesn't, he still got a pretty sweet keeper.

WG didn't have to do the deal and from my conversations with him, didn't coax GO into making the deal. GO had to make a serious offer in order to make WG move a guy of Baez' caliber. For reasons' stated above, he doesn't believe Ellsbury will replicate his draft position.

Could GO have gotten more? Probably.

Would GO have gotten the guy he really wanted on his team? Nope.

Lets see how Baez does once he hits the show before judging GO on the deal. All I know is we will have an interesting 4-5 team race at the top of the league between WG, Ref, BH, R9, and BMD (pending how aggressive he is if he moves Taveras or not :D [only half-kidding]).

My time will come, hopefully next year!

2013 in review

Going into 2013 I knew I didn't have the talent to compete for #1, but would have been pleased with a top 10. I felt my hitting keepers were okay, but I needed some pitching depth, so I drafted pitching relatively early. This actually worked out, but not the way I imagined, as some of my lower picks like Travis Wood far exceeded projections. But what killed me was my hitting, which was average in 2012, took a nosedive in 2013. I ended up last or close to last in every hitting category save SB.

2013 Keepers:
Josh Willingham - Disastrous, injury plagued season.
Corey Hart - At the time of keepers, he was expected to return by June 1st. He never returned.
Pedro Alvarez – Did exactly what I expected and was the best hitter on the team.
Ben Revere - Another injury shortened season, and wasn't very good when he did play. He scored only 37 runs despite getting on base 112 times. Leadoff hitter?
Ike Davis - Another disastrous first half. After coming back from a demotion he did play well, but without the power he had shown previously.
Victor Martinez - Good, solid production from the C position
James Shields - Nothing to complain about
Homer Bailey - Continued to shine, but could be more consistent.
John Axford - A bad 2 week stretch at the start of the season lost him his closer job and he never got it back. Looks like Roeneckie is now doing the same thing with the guy that replaced him.
Jacob Turner – renounced and called up before the season, he was immediately demoted by the Marlins, and when he was called up pitched okay, but not okay enough to be considered a future star.

2013 Draftees:
I had slightly better luck with some of my draftees.
Jose Altuve – He did not play nearly as well as in 2012, but still was productive enough with 35 SB.
Grant Balfour – Rock solid closer that was a bit of a steal in the 2nd round. My first true closer in this league.
Matt Garza – He pitched really well when he came back from injury and I was able to flip him for a pretty good haul.
Travis Wood – Considering his draft position, this guy was awesome.

2013 Trades:
I made two trades in 2013: One good and one not-so-good.
Matt Garza for Andrew Cashner, Nelson Cruz, and 7th round pick. WG was pretty desperate for some pitching down the stretch, and I was able to get a pretty good return for a guy I knew couldn’t sustain his current production. Sure enough, Cashner out-produced Garza by a lot and it wasn’t even close. I also added a much needed hitter keeper.
Nolan Arenado for Todd Frazier and Logan Morrison. Arenado was called up but wasn’t doing much with the bat. Frazier was a better hitter and I got a guy in Morrison who had shown good things before and had just come back from injury. Frazier was pretty bad in the second half and Morrison was non-existent. Arenado was a keeper but it’s still to be seen if he will be a good hitter or not. I would say at the very least the trade is a wash. Frazier was kept but is expendable. Arenado would probably be in the same position if I still had him.

2014 Keepers:
With the state of my team going in, I felt that I had to remake my offense. So I ditched a lot of the guys I had previously invested more than one keeper slot to: Willingham, Revere, and Davis. Revere represented the last player I still had from the previous manager. The dilemma for me was whether or not to keep Axford. It was down to Axford, Wood, Beachy, or Revere. I chose Axford in part because I had read somewhere that the Cardinals had corrected him from tipping his pitches.
Holdovers:
Pedro Alvarez
James Shields
Homer Bailey
John Axford – Only because he got a closer job again.
New Guys:
Jose Altuve – He should be better this year.
Grant Balfour – This one was up in the air until he finally found a closer job.
Andrew Cashner – Was awesome after getting him in the Garza trade.
Nelson Cruz – Not sure what to expect from him, but given the state of my offense, he is the best hitter on this team.
Todd Frazier – He was so disappointing last year after I got him, but the trade would be worthless if I hadn’t kept him. I am hoping he can do what he did in 2012.

2014 Prospect Draft
I had one pick and I knew it had to be a hitter. I was sitting at 1.05 so I my choices were Bryant, Abreu, Frazier, and Meadows. For some reason Polanco wasn’t even on my radar. I actually got a worse pick in the lottery, but still managed to get Clint Frazier. He’s young and a long ways off, but I like the power potential. With Buxton and Taillon possibly arriving this year, I will be in good shape for the 2015 draft.

2014 Supplemental Draft
I again didn’t win the lottery, but that’s okay as I pretty much won them both last year. I needed hitting so concentrated on that the first few rounds.
1.05 Curtis Granderson – The most well rounded hitter at this spot. Not the same player he was 3 years ago, but still should be pretty good. 80-20-80-15-.340 would make me pleased.
2.05 Evan Gattis – I like his upside and his power potential. Perhaps the only upside pick I managed in the draft.
3.05 Rajai Davis – I picked him way too early. I had dreams of him starting every day and getting 50-60 steals, but I now see that’s not going to happen. He’s still good for 35 steals but to get those I have to play him every day and hope he starts. A lot of times I will get zeroes.
4.05 Jake Peavy – The pitching was already getting thin. I needed someone solid in that 4th spot. I’ll be happy if he pitches 20 games.
5.05 Erick Aybar – Now I am just hunting positions. I got stuck with no SS last year and that stunk, so this time a got someone who will at least be reliably mediocre.
6.05 Ryan Howard – Old, possibly broken, but still has potential. I’ll be happy if he hits 25 HR.
7.05 Jhoulys Chacin – Really stretching for pitching now. He was great last year despite pitching in COL. Will he be that good again? Probably not, but he does have some upside.
7.20 Didi Gregorius – At the time he was in a spring battle with Chris Owings. Even though he lost, he does have some upside and perhaps if he gets traded he will shine with a new team. I might’ve picked him a little early here, but good SS are hard to find.
8.05 Sean Doolittle – I have to have my namesake on the team. Besides he’s pretty darn good, even if he isn’t second in line for saves.
9.05 Eric Stults – This guy gets no respect in fantasy (I even grabbed him for $2 in my 30-team league), but he was arguably the most consistent pitcher on the Padres last year. We’ll see if my Wood-like magic carries forward here.
11.05 Matt Joyce – I really like this pick. He’s a platoon guy but has the pop and the OBP to fill in in the OF whenever I need him to.
12.05 Bryan Shaw – I thought this was the handcuff for Axford, but I guessed wrong.
13.05 Jose Tabata – A total spec pick. He will probably be the first to get dropped.
14.05 Garrett Jones – A decent player this far down in the draft. Can fill in at OF and 1B.

Generally I believe I didn’t do so well in this draft. In my position I should have been going for more upside guys, but In other keeper leagues I’ve played in, I’ve played for this year because I’ve usually had a good core of players, and that is generally my mindset. With this collection of players I might be able to sneak into the top 10, but there’s no upside with guys like Howard, Aybar, Davis, or Granderson. I think I am destined to be in the 11-15 range again, and hopefully next year I might be able to compete if Buxton and Taillon come through, my top three SP continue to pitch well, and my younger hitters improve. It’s a lot to ask.

Nerf - nice writeup and overview of our trade. I am inclined to agree with you on Arenado. While I don't think he will ever be an elite fantasy third baseman, he could very well be a tier-2 type guy. His defense (best in the show) will keep him in Colorado for the next ten seasons or so...that said, I'm hoping he continues to develop and ends up as a .340/20/100/100 type player with the occasional SB. Yes...I know that is quite ambitious.

Species - I know :) Post draft, I sent you a tentative feeler about acquiring Abreu. You all but stated the offer would have to blow you away as Abreu fixes into your long-term plans. Since you have Longoria at the hot corner and are playing for 2015, I didn't think I could make a competitive enough offer to get Abreu.

During the draft, I was at a school with limited internet access. Therefore, I fired off emails during our fifteen minute breaks...Bryant was definitely #1 on my board, so after I made the deal I didn't deliberate about "what if" scenarios. I made a decision and went with it.

That said, I knew I needed a first basemen long-term to solidify my infield. While my hot corner options might not be among the best in the show, they are relevant for G20.

BH - I don't think anybody got the better of the deal. I sent Pete a message about considering a swap in the future. To my surprise, he was open to discussion right away, so everything got worked out quickly:

-Pete needed a long-term answer at 3B, has Hosmer, Singleton, and Smoak at 1B.
-I needed a long-term answer at 1B, have Arenado, Rendon (might get eligibility), and Bryant at 3B.

So while we slightly downgrade (initially) at 1B (Pete) and 3B (Slizz), long-term we each are in a better place for our 9 keepers.

If the option for "Push" was there, that would be my vote as its a win/win for each side.

75: Well come on.....I am not going to make it sound like someone is going to be easy to acquire! :D. Gotta make it sound like a challenge to get a good offer.

The P-draft top 3 went exactly as I ranked them. I would have drafted Bryant or Polanco if I could.......but now it's not so easy post S-Draft. And tonight's 2-HR game doesn't hurt either! ;)

I like the deal for both......but put more risk on Pete obviously. Bryant could be more of a 30-hr stud vs Hosmer's higher obp likelihood. Plus Bryant could end up in the OF which would suck a bit for positional value.

Especially the part where WG couldn't name as many Twins, A's, Mariners, Dodgers, or Marlins as the rest of us. He may be the best fantasy manager, but he sucks at that.

Species - post s-draft it definitely made it harder...that's for sure. I just couldn't see how it would make sense for your side of the coin...

Bryant definitely has the higher ceiling, I just needed a first baseman. If he doesn't move positions, from a player to player production standpoint, Pete likely wins the deal.

LOL, you can't say anything about bad trades now when no one said anything about the GO/WG deal. FTR, Pete has been trying to do this deal with me since preseason. I said no. Then came back to me with it after he traded Hoesmer. I resisted. Then a couple days ago put it on the site. I still had no intention of doing it until yesterday when wondering if my power hitters will ever get me any HRs. I like Wong better long term. His OBP is just as good and his steals are much better. Kinsler has more power but stuck at a Pitcher's stadium. Both players should score some runs, esp. with Wong batting 2nd. But with Ellis back and Wong not hitting for power, Kinsler should still do better for this year and turns out I need HRs more than steals. Kinsler does get the occasional steal too.

Slizz also feels I overpaid. It really helps Pete as he is lining his team up for the future when Wong should be the better player and he's getting a 2nd out of it. But I am counting on this deal helping me more this year. If it is significant and helps me vie for a title, then it was worth it. If not, then oh well. I do need Kinsler to be better than he has to start the season though. Yesterday is a good start.

I'd be interested in trading for an upgrade at 3B and/or a spot filler at OF while Hamilton is on the DL. My prospects are Kyle Zimmer and Austin Meadows, both available. Also willing to trade draft picks. Would rather not downgrade off of my current roster, but could if the 3B or OF upgrade is significant enough.

Take a look and let me know...

I haven't had a chance to comment much on the two most recent trades I've been involved in, but Slizz hit the nail on the head with our deal in post #75 as did Ref with our deal in post #106. Both were good fits and I see as a win-win for both.

Hosmer for Bryant --- I know I'm in the minority, but I see Singleton as a soon to be keeper at 1st base in this league. I also had Bryant as #1 on my board going into the prospect draft. When Slizz approached me on the idea, I initially had to think it over but then jumped at it.

Kins for Wong plus draft pick compensation --- I was the aggressor on this one. I wanted to move Kins (still one of my favorite players but didn't make sense on my team anymore) for a combo of pick compensation and/or young hitter and Ref was the best fit. I had to come down from my initial asking price of a 1st, but am still happy to have Wong and a 2nd.

It'll be fun to see how the deals pan out. Again, both trades are good fits and win-wins in my opinion. That's what it's about.

BH Micro-Management Update

Through April 20.

Six hitters have only appeared in one game for me, and none of the six is currently on my roster. 23 AB, 7 R, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 1 SB, .462 OBP. Basically, I have found a 43 HR, 21 SB hitter on the waiver wire.

It's only April 20, not too late for the rest of you to employ the strategy.

I will give bh his props on this. I realize many here feel this is a tedious exercise.....but anybody who has played any daily leagues (Fanduel) or big-money season-long leagues knows that daily matchups offer extreme opportunities to score well.

WAB (anyone remember him?) and I shared over $35000 in pre-tax, pre-expense winnings in 2005-ish in a Rotoworld-related baseball fantasy game. We did that because we grinded it out EVERY DAY looking at the matchups of every player (hitter and pitcher) in our lineup.

One of the best tools to use were batter splits vs. specific pitchers, LH vs RHP, etc. In a league like ours, the main guys you can rotate off of the waiver wire like bh are right-handed hitting platoon players. Obviously they aren't getting the lion's share of ABs, so much of the time they aren't rostered.

He isn't that extreme of an example, but if you look at Jonny Gomes over the past three seasons, he has a .396 OBP and .494 SLG vs. LHP. We would take that player on our team any day of the week. Looking deeper, he destroys the Orioles at Camden Yards to the tune of a 1.096 OPS. Admittedly its a small sample size, but sometimes players just have a team's number. Based upon this data, if I had the time and gumption to do it, I would happily rotate Gomes in against LHP as often as I could....and if he was playing the Orioles to boot, I'd be all over it.

I understand this doesn't appeal to some (many), but don't knock it.

Actually, most of the time I do two things: look at probable pitchers and consider sitting lefties vs lefties (especially Jason Castro) and monitor lineups (many sites, including one I built) to see if need a replacement.

Most days, that's a tiny commitment; if I actually have to find a player to pick up, it's a little more time.

Then I spend 25 minutes figuring out which combo of Gyorko, Semien, and Dominguez to play.

I've never understood the Phillies' fan fascination with Galvis... he's barely a major league player. And people would seriously call in and say to let Rollins go and they could start Galvis as their SS. That would be embarrassing.

And Asche ain't much better. Franco? He's sounds like the real deal. They better hope so cause they have no youth on that squad.

122 Species; That's interesting because although I know nothing about daily leagues, the articles i read this year in the fantasy magazines about how to win daily leagues all said to IGNORE individual matchup histories. Sample size too small. Obviously I'm not going to argue with someone who made $35K using them, however.

Platoon advantages of course they recommend taking advantage of.

Right, individual histories are often too sparse- you can expand the data by looking at the type of pitcher, rather than the actual pitcher. Not just right left but also groundball/flyball and power/finesse.

The one indivual historical matchup, pitcher-wise, I remember targeting was Roy Oswalt vs Cincinnati back then.....he was something like 17-1 lifetime at that point in his career with a really low era and great K rates......

2014 in Review - So Far

Here we are on May 1, and things are exactly where they should be: with Blue Hen in first place. Here's a quick review.

Keepers: Trading Giancarlo Stanton unconsolidated my keepers. However, looking at the return, things are still decent. Prince Fielder (17 walks) and Shin-Soo Choo (.433 OBP) have been solid, except in the power department. Max Scherzer has been excellent. Stanton's been great, but things are still chugging along, at least for this year. Also very happy with Jose Bautista and Troy Tulowitzki, who have been my two best players. And finally, given closer volatility around the league, Trevor Rosenthal is nice to have.

P-Draft: Most of these picks were looking to the future, both with Vic Black and Daniel Webb as 2015 closers and Jonathan Schoop and Colin Moran as future contributors. But the best pick in the draft has to be Joey Gallo, who hit 40 homers last year and has 9 already in 2014 (plus 20 walks in 24 games), and is still young for his league. Gallo's going to be the big score and I can either hold him (a la Stanton) or trade him for a bunch of pieces (a la Baez).

Draft: David Ortiz was an obvious pick, has been good and should be better. Takes some of the sting away from losing Rizzo. My other early picks didn't pan out, but so far the MVP has been 4.15 Eric Young. Looks like he'll keep playing and keep stealing, which is exactly what I need out of that spot, and a big part of why I traded away Ryan Braun (to open up my outfield). Lower in the draft, we find Marcus Semien, who has been a solid contributor and, at 23 and 2B-eligible, is headed towards being a keeper.

Waiver Wire: Decent work here, with longer term holds Jarrod Dyson and Jenrry Mejia, plus solid micromanagement, including great games by Aaron Harang, Welington Castillo, Abraham Almonte, Carlos Ruiz. Also stumbled into the Mets closer, just not sure yet if that's Farnsworth, Dice K, or Vic Black.

All in all, April 2014 rates as an A+ for me. Best stat: 148 walks. I don't think anyone else is within 50 of that. Also have a 9.95 K/9 ratio, which also leads the league (although Ref is close at 9.7).

Statistically, my weakest category is saves, so let's get those offers coming.

Good luck the rest of the year.

April Review

Keepers - I had the weakest keepers in the entire league as I am still in the midst of a rebuild. Chris Carter was supposed to be my HR leader and Villar was supposed to be burning up the bases! Turns out I would've been better off keeping Morneau and Dee Gordon. Swap those two out and I am actually competing. Jose is fabulous. Rendon is better then I thought he would be and Arenado is doing as expected.

P-Draft - Lets just say Eric Hosmer was my first pick. I would've been better off taking Abreu...oh well. Hosmer is still solid, just unfortunate he is likely a 15-20 HR type guy like Mauer and not a 25-30 HR masher that he was projected to be. Lucas Giolito is chugging along in single A. Not a big fan of taking teenagers but I think he will be fine.

S-Draft - when you miss on your first two picks (Feliz and Garcia), its tough to call your draft an overall success. I am curious to see how Avisail would've done but who knows how that injury will effect his long-term success.

Hits:
Rick Porcello (3) - provides quality depth and should be around 7k/9. Will get me wins without hurting ERA and WHIP.
Michael Pineda (4) - Damn pine tar.
Marcell Ozuna (5) - one of the better picks in the entire draft. If he only stole a couple bases!
Nathan Eovaldi (6) - another solid pick. Could pitch his way into a keeper spot for me.
Derek Norris (8) - Good platoon with Jaso. Know I get a top hitting catcher when a LHP is facing Oakland.
Jesse Chavez (12) - Didn't see this coming. I am a little upset I benched him @ TEX (I typically avoid that matchup) in light of 8 IP, 8K, 0 ERA 0.33 WHIP...lol

Wish Hicks and Alonso would pick it up. But i'm sure everyone in this league that has owned hicks in other leagues has thought the same thing. As for Alonso, just need him to start hitting like his career average and i'll be happy. This high .100's crap needs to end.

Considering my original projection was last place, its hard not to consider this ride a success. I have a personal goal of 120 points this season and really want to hit it. Like last season, if offers come my way that I can't say no to, I will act on them, but all in all I'm enjoying the ride.

If anyone wants to trade for any of the above hospital ward I'd be interested. Those not looking to contend this year should be interested in Jay Bruce especially.

Anyone looking for saves: I have the duo of Frieri & Joe Smith available in trade for 2015 supplemental draft picks.

One manager has already expressed interest, although we have not yet discussed specifics.

If you are interested, make your best offer.

Nice trade fellas.

Question for the group:

I was discussing a trade with another manager. While nothing was formally finalized via email, the intent of the players involved in the proposal was quite clear.

Me, being a blithering idiot, went ahead and proposed the trade that was discussed (but not agreed upon) on ESPN. The problem was ---- I clicked on the wrong player I was giving in return. This player would be valued more highly and was never in our discussions. It was a simple "thumb error" while entering it on my phone.....but my fault completely.

Thankfully the potential trade partner was too busy to see the trade and never acted on it.

If they did.....and I came back with my hat in my hand confessing my error......what would your opinion be about potentially reversing the trade??

Of course, the other party would have likely consented and accepted it as an error.....but I am just curious :)

More than likely it shouldn't count. I know I've came close to dropping some players that I didn't want to due to "misclicks". I would hope if that ever happened it would be reversed as well.

159: We're human. We make mistakes. However, need your trade partner to agree because he/she may have not ultimately made the deal otherwise. May have gotten cold feet until he saw this deal. Many of times I had trades agree upon then sent the offer only to have the other party back out or change their mind and want more.

That's a very different situation than what Species describes, and if it happens in exactly that way, I hope it doesn't happen often. If the deal is actually agreed upon, it's pretty bush league to go back to the well.

Remember my first year in G20, when you screwed over a new manager in the Soria deal? And then remember in 2014 when you equated "trade remorse" with "backed out on a deal"?

Ref, you're great. I know we don't always see eye to eye (apt expression, since you're one of the few in this league I have never met), but you work hard, you play well, and you add some great personality. Don't ever change.

Fun fact: Despite today's 5.5 point loss, I have a 21 point lead on 2nd place Toral. 15 points behind him? That'd be 9th place Allhair.

In minor league news, Chris Sale pitched four innings in rehab this week... and struck out 11 batters. And who leads the minors with 18 homers? That'd be BH prospect Joey Gallo, who also led the minors in homers last year.

Happy Toral? Let's keep this post handy when I'm languishing in 4th place in September. Also, does anyone have a closer to spare?

Slizz had an awesome idea. If someone picks up your prospect, it increases the threshold. So I get Webb for 40 games, but then get 2 more each pickup. With 3 today, I can keep Webb as long as he stays under 46 games.

Heh, maybe not so awesome. But interesting.

Well, you'll have the excitement, and that's the fun of it. And considering your team and free-agent and trading abilities, you should win. It would be a major upset if you didn't, an upset we would tell our grandchildren about as we dandled them on our knees.

Does anyone know how stat corrections work in ESPN? I noticed Cashner has had 2 ER and 1 Hit removed from his totals compared to what I recorded on my spreadsheet, but I have found no evidence of that being reflected in my total, as my ERA is still the same. The game was on April 26th. Yahoo applied the correction on May 18th.

Good for league parity to see Goatlocker (4th) and Guru (9th) in the top half of the standings. These guys have been working hard to improve their teams, and looks like it's working. And Goatlocker just made his first trade in a while, in an attempt to bolster his pitching. Good stuff.

I have been getting a few offers/inquiries. While I am open to moving a few of those players you are asking about, please take a look at my team and evaluate what I need. Or you can ask me. ;) I can't really give up on a youngster who might not produce a lot until next year w/o something that will help me now.

Yes I have a ton of Pitching, but those guys are helping me now. If I move one, I need to get something in return that will help. Yes, I will consider paying picks, but while your player may be nice, I have to have a spot to play him.

I'd rather get offers that don't work than not get any offers at all. I will also respond to every inquiry. Nothing is more demoralizing than working hard to find a good fit than not get a response. Thank you to those who have responded!

If you haven't seen what Ref has done in the last week, you should. It's officially "on". His stars are hitting, and his gambles are working. Pretty much everything I said in post 184 for myself. Here's hoping for some course correction.

I really haven't done much tbh. It's really been a stat correction. No way I should have been in last place by 3 HRs about 3 weeks ago or so. Glad I waited out the offers and held on. I have by far the best Pitching staff and if those guys got support from their hitters/pen, I'd be running away with wins too.

Cuddyer had been out for over a month and his return should help. Boston's long losing streak helped kill my save opps. Am really missing Wong. If Leonys starts doing what he is supposed to do, I should be in good shape. I don't have a lot of stars, so my players have to do their part.Really hope Bradley gets moved to the top of the order this year instead of next as that would be a boon to my team.

May Review:

Jose. Jose. Jose. A huge loss for fans of baseball and especially for Team Slizz. For a while, I was chugging along and even touched 2nd place behind BH post injury. Needless to say, my team has already started to erode. I went from having a secure 19/20 total in ERA/WHIP, 20 in strikeouts, and 20 in Wins. Since the injury, I have lost at least 10 points in the standings because of Jose's consistency.

My knee-jerk reaction was to trade Jose to a team for a nice coup, but Ref told me I would be better off holding. He cited his personal experiences with Adam Wainwright and Stephen Strasburg. When you have a front-line starter like Jose Fernandez, it makes your life that much easier with drafting and filling other areas. Don't get me wrong, I would be open to trading him, but the offer would have to blow me away.

As far as hitting, my squad took the month off it seems. Hosmer had a brief hot streak from end of April to early May, but still isn't hitting home runs. Villar is productive when he actually plays, but is streaky. Carter is a complete abortion. In hindsight, I should've kept Morneau and Dee!!! Had I done that I would be vying for a top spot...lol. Dom Brown continues to disappoint fantasy owners and losing Arenado for an extended period of time stinks as well.

I did make a move trading Solarte and Chavez for Gausman and Johnson. My thoughts -- Goatlocker is contending, could use Solarte's flexibility at 2B/3B/OF on off days plus he will have a decent slash line for a contending team. I get Gausman's upside as I expect him to be up sooner or later as he doesn't have any "Super Two" restrictions and Johnson has to get the closer's job back at some point, right? Win/Win for both sides.

Going forward, I am in decent shape keeper wise going forward:

1B - Hosmer - Still under 25 at a position with a near nonexistent pipeline. Needs to hit more homeruns to be a legit top 1B.
2B - Rendon - Will retain 2B eligibility for one more season before moving fulltime to 3B in 2015 when Laroche leaves allowing Zimmerman to goto 1B.
3B - Arenado - Better then we all thought he would be. I envision a potential Longoria in Colorado!
OF - Ozuna - 23 years old, legit power, and only getting better.
OF - Arcia - Ozuna with more power less speed.
OF - Brown - he has to turn it around
SP - Jose - Jose.
SP - Lester - As good as ever.
SP - Eovaldi - 98mph fastball, pitches in Miami, getting better each year.
RP - Reed - I don't have anyone else who closes...lol

Possible Keepers:
C - Derek Norris - how can you not consider him with his awesome slash line?
OF - Aaron Hicks - As karabell said, get him and hold. Has the potential to hit 10 HR and steal 20 bags for the remainder of the year. Maybe he pans out, maybe he doesn't.
SP - Rick "Quality Start" Porcello - Keeps improving every year, still under 26.
SP - Michael Pineda - Check his health first. Has a half-season audition.
SP - Kevin Gausman - he could be awesome, he could suck.

Why do I put these brief writeups up? I never know if a manager sees these guys and thinks they could make their team better while also helping mine.

BH June 1 Review

Well, um, that didn't work out so well. What a difference a month makes.

More seriously, we're still in good shape. The core of Tulo, Bautista, Choo, and Ortiz should be fine (barring injury), and a couple other players are looking pretty good. Dominguez and BJ Upton, to name two, are hitting better lately. We knew steals would be a problem, and Eric Young masked that in April, but it's hurting in May. Would love to get him back or find a similar player.

On the pitching side, there were some struggles, but the ship is righting itself. Sale, Price, and Scherzer are a great core, and if they stay healthy, the spot starts should fill out the innings. Relievers have been pretty good despite the Jenrry Mejia debacle. Britton and Belisario have joined Rosenthal as nominal closers, which should at least keep me competitive. And Betances has been a revelation.

Obviously, Ref scares me most, but WG is still hanging out, and R9 or Toral could blow by everyone in short order. I'm still wary of BMD, way down in 9th. Should be a fun season from here on out.

This is a stunner. Around the end of April, I was dead last in the standings, and starting to think of what to do to set up for next year.

As of the moment, I'm now in 7th! George Springer has obviously provided a nice pop, but I don't think he's got that much "spring."

All I can figure is that most of you other teams must really suck!

Congrats Guru. Really happy to see you this high in the standings. Obviously, Anthony Rizzo is a big reason. See what I was talking about, pretty much every other team in the league?

Also, I was going to make a comment about how you did it with only four pickups, but that is apparently the strategy of the day - Allhair (6th) has 6, and Nerf (8th) has 2. Makes it even more impressive, I guess.

If we could all have a mulligan for April, we'd have myself, GL, Guru, AA and a couple others at the top. Heck I am at the top now, but that first month wasn't too kind to me in hitting. I was telling Slizz last week that no one is talking about Springer and he is killing it! He agreed.

I am looking to move some pitching for hitting. Well more stealing than hitting! Managers have killed me by moving Leonys and Bradley to the bottom of the lineup. I can only hope that Leonys does what he did last year as we go on. That pickup changed my entire season last year.

It appears that my prospect Texas second baseman Rougned Odor may stay up all year and exceed his prospect threshold. This isn't something I was expecting.

Consequently I am willing to consider trading him. For something that would help me this year (pitching would be one area), supplementary draft pick(s), or prospect pick(s).

Toral, it's funny you post that as I have been looking at all of the prospects available who haven't been called up. Wheeler s called up and no longer prospect-eligible and needs to be removed. Not sure how many others fall into this category.

The Cubs pen absolutely blows. They have a couple stud SPs who they have treated miserably. Last night it was Hammel with the score 3-0 and threw an absolute gem until Rondon gives up 3 and blows it. Then it was a true Lohser in Milwaukee. Even after departing the pen gave him 3 more ERs I think. Best game of his career followed by his worst. Bauer has just one hiccup then pitched great after that but his offense couldn't get it done for him.

Wow, I had 5 steals yesterday. Probably more than I've had in the last month. If Mattingly keeps Hanley in that 2 spot, I might need to go after steals afterall. Puig is more apt to steal this way too--esp. with the shift on AGonz. I saw Puig chase last night though for the first time in awhile.

Mid-Season report:

I'm still on the fence about how to proceed this year. My hitters have the pedigree to just bust out and take me on a 50-pt surge to first, but they have all collectively struggled this year. Goldy, Trout, Cargo, Aramis, Mauer... none have been awful, but all are well below their ADP.

Interesting trade. One of the rare ones in this league that doesn't involve superstars. And I get it from both perspectives:

Toral needs pitching, but couldn't part with current roster pieces. He gets two solid contributors that won't be kept, and don't alter much of his current roster (unless Familia closes and Toral finds himself needing saves).

Species saw himself with two valuable chips, but shrinking value every day. So he did what he could to cash them in. Odor's a decent lottery ticket, and Familia, if he closes, could be another good piece to turn around. Much better for him than trying to trade Beckett and Buerhle in August.

I am shocked Buerhle has gotten so many wins. But he is a guy who can pitch well on occasion. I don't think he will keep it up, but he likely won't flop either. Beckett is an enigma. He has pitched better than expected. If the Dodgers can start hitting regularly, he could be a great acquisition. I like Odor. I don't really know Familia. Bottom line is that none of these guys will likely be kept, but if they are, Species' guys have the best chance for it.

My guys are playing like they did in April again. My team isn't good enough to weather a long drought. My team might be patchwork but if the guys can hit their potential, it can soar.

Interesting trade. While I give goatlocker a ton of credit for getting what he was looking for (Melancon instantly becomes his best reliever), mjd appears to have gotten the best possible return, given that he had three offers. I shudder to think about what some of the lesser offers were. Last year around this time, we saw Kevin Gregg traded for a 5th rounder.

Looking for some clarification please.

I can call up Taijuan Walker now for the 2nd time and still send him down again later? And then if he concludes the season with under 110 IP and on my Prospect roster... I can make him a 10th keeper next year? I see Kolten Wong has a (2) next to his name so I thought this interpretation was correct but wanted to double check.

Thanks.

Blue Hen July 1 Report, one day early

Just like last month, I'll say "What a difference a month makes." June started with Prince Fielder going out for the year, and my team out of first place. Both those situations required some immediate action.

First order of business was to trade Fielder for 2014 assets. Cole, Romo, and LaRoche, plus picks seemed like good value in return. Cole promptly got hurt, and Romo struggled, but LaRoche has been amazing, far exceeding what Prince had been bringing to the table. I still think Prince will be fine in 2015 and beyond, but happy with this.

In early June, my ERA and WHIP both sat in single digits. There's a reason I traded for Gerrit Cole, and I wasn't finished. The two Jakes (Arrieta and Odorizzi) both joined the team, and both were awesome. Two guys I've followed in the past, and happy to have them now. Feeling pretty good about starting pitching, even when stacked up with Toral and Ref super teams.

Hitting fell off a bit in June. Worst was stolen bases, with only 7 steals in June (plus three from EYJ on my bench in one game!). Some superstars have struggled (Choo, Ortiz) and others were merely human (Tulo, Bautista). None of the rest did anything to stand out. The hitting can still be elite, but it's going to take some doing, probably some moves and some bounceback.

As for prospects, it's looking pretty great right now. Joey Gallo is up to 29 homers and will almost definitely hit 11 more over the next two months for his second consecutive 40 homer season. The others are looking up as well - Dan Webb and Vic Black in the middle of uncertain closer situations, and Jon Schoop and Colin Moran hitting much better lately.

Overall, it's hard to complain about being in first place. Toral has a lot of ground to gain with his pitching, and Ref has superstars who can get it done. Goatlocker looks like he'll stick around, and WG is also ever-present.

As you can imagine, I'm looking to improve my hitting now, and offering up youth and non-Gallo prospects to get it done. If you have any ideas, let me know.

Here's to a fun second half!

From Tristan Cockroft's "Second half risers" column:

Mike Leake, SP, Cincinnati Reds: His is more of the "bolder of the bold" calls, because he's already 38th among starting pitchers on our Player Rater; this is more of a perceived versus actual reality call, as most don't think of Leake as a top-40 capable fantasy starter, but there's the chance that he has made the necessary adjustments to realize that potential going forward. Leake has 46 K's in 43 1/3 innings over his past seven starts, and during that span his fastball has averaged 91.4 mph, which compares favorably to his 89.3 mph career number. He has also gotten far better production from his cutter: Opponents have batted .198 against it and missed on 22 percent of their swings this season; they have batted .252 with a 17 percent miss rate against it in his career. Is this a clear skills bump for Leake? Maybe not, perhaps it's small-sample good fortune, but if you need to make some low-priced, potentially high-ceiling acquisitions, he's worth a look.

275. That was light years ago.

My team is sinking. Gotta do the blue hen thing with pitchers as I am 263 IP behind -- too many DL and demotions. I figure getting caught up would add around 150 k, and maybe 10w to my cause. In today's standings that would add 19 points to put me in all of 16 th place. Wow! Not much...

Today's SP stink however.

I think I will stream any pitcher going agains the phillies as the odds are most excellent that he will have a great game!

Happy Independence Day!!!

My team is who everyone thought they were lol. June was worse than April. My Ps even decided to drop the ball. I don't have the studs to get it done without the non studs and fillers helping. In fact even my studs haven't done much. EE's homers have kept me afloat. Kinsler is finally doing a little after being awful by his lofty standards. Wainwright has done well. Unless I can find multiple upgrades or I have another Month like May or get an infusion of help, it's time to sell-off some of these players. So I am torn between buying and selling right now. Just don't have the horses as is.

Nice trade. Obviously, Goatlocker gets the better player and also someone he's probably been targeting. As we keep saying, he's making moves to stay in the race, although he'll need some of his fast starters to keep doing it.

R9 clearly has a theme going here, trading for both Jered Weaver and Doug Fister. Of course, he's closer to the top right now, so this is the kind of move that has the potential to make a big difference.

With Votto's latest injury, I'm about ready to throw in the towel on my disaster of a season. Everyone on my roster is available, starting w/ closers:

Fernando Rodney should be attractive for both teams needing saves for this season as well as his long term closer potential. Looking for young talent at any position.

292 confirmed.

I had a lot of offers in for SP's, but I took the guy who I think will get more wins for the rest of the season. He goes deep into games and has a good pen, which is more then a lot of the other talented SP's offered my way have. The draft pick wasn't negligible either.

I'm also sending Heaney back down to my prospect roster.

Team Species midseason report

Midseason finds me assessing my assets and trying to place my chess pieces in their proper place heading into 2015. In reviewing one website's dynasty league rankings as of June, Team Species a whopping 1w players in the top 200:

Bogaerts 20
Bruce 23
Felix 24
Longoria 38
Harvey 48
Abreu 56
Myers 61
Sano 103
Santana 113
Seager 172
Alcantara 186
Skaggs 194

With 20 teams, one would expect to have 3 players in the top 61. I have 7. That's beautiful.

This list was done a month ago. Bogaerts has gone 0-for-a month....but Abreu has hit like 10 bombs. Guys will inch up and down, but you get the point.

I still have a ninth keeper to figure out.....could keep a young guy (Stephenson, Nelson, Gibson, Alcantara, Odor) or go in a few directions.

I have like 9 picks in the first five rounds as well.

It is probably not realistic to expect contention.......but I will be back competing next year. Maybe I will try a Baez-like deal after keepers with Sano and Seager as bait?? So many directions to go.......just so glad the waiting is nearly over.

The accolades continue. Tristan Cockroft's updated top 250 keepers reveals the following:

Felix 13
Abreu 14
Longoria 22
Bruce 42
Myers 66
Santana 67
Bogaerts 70
Harvey 74

Eight in the top 75. Damn.

And Keith Law's midseason top 50 prospects has Corey Seager at 5, Miguel Sano at 11 and Jorge Alfaro at 31. Keep those names in mind as the 2015 keeper deadline approaches!

We can stop the season now. I think I've peaked. In 3rd place this morning! Hard to remember that I was in 20th for most of April.

From the (full season) player rater:
19 Rizzo (Keeper - acq. via preseason trade)
24 G. Richards (drafted 4.04)
33 B. Moss (Keeper)
49 Kluber (draft 3.04)
57 Springer (Prospect)
66 K. Seager (Keeper)
86 Roark (draft 11.04)
91 Joe Smith (draft 13.08)
118 L. Lynn (draft 2.04)

9 players in rated in top 120. Only 2 (Moss, Seager) were on my active roster last season.

Patrick Corbin is available - I won't be able to keep him next year. Not looking for much. Either a modest pick upgrade, or even a non-keeper player who can help me this year.

Team Slizz Midseason Report

Looking back, I should be happy that I am where I am in the standings given how dire my keeper situation was. Afterall, I was only projected 68 points via Rotowire preseason. At one point, I found myself in the top 5 a couple months in and actually thought I could stay up around there!

Of course in May and June my hitters seemed to take the month off with sub .300 OB%. Nevertheless, this season was solidifying the foundation of the house, which I feel I have done.

Regardless of what is done, my future is going to be tied to one trade: Kris Bryant and Drew Pomeranz for Eric Hosmer. That could go down as one of the worst trades in G20 history. And thats not a knock on Pete. I planted the seed when I was in the top 5 and Pete wanted to close right away. figured I was buying low on Hosmer when in reality, he just might be a tease :/

Wish I held out longer and offered up Arenado as I'm guessing he would've accepted given the needs on both sides. Hopefully Hosmer recaptures what made him such a coveted player in the second half of 2013!

ESPN Player Rater Top 200:

C - Derek Norris, 197
1B - Eric Hosmer, 189
2B - Anthony Rendon, 41
OF - Marcell Ozuna, 100
SP - Jon Lester, 43
SP - Rick Porcello, 121
SP - Jose Fernandez, 198
RP - Addison Reed, 152

Cockroft Top 250 Keepers:

1B - Eric Hosmer, 47
1B - Kendrys Morales, 162 - Didn't even want to list him. He's not going to be kept, but if someone wants to trade me for him, I'll make it very easy for you.
2B - Anthony Rendon, 37 - Happy with his development. The 10 SB speed is a huge bonus.
3B - Nolan Arenado, 85: Only 22, improved across the board and was a top 5 3B until he got injured. Excited to see what he can do next year. Of course he's no Todd Frazier, but both sides are happy with the deal.
OF - Marcell Ozuna, 124: Excited about him. Showcased good power in the minors and it looks to translate to the pros. 25-30 HR power and if he improves his baserunning, he could easily steal 10 SB with his range/speed.
OF - Dom Brown, 172 - Enigma. Is he this season's abortion, or last season's stud. I'm guessing somewhere in between, but Philadelphia is a disaster.
OF - Oswaldo Arcia, 210 - I just love the guy. Think he is going to be a 30 HR guy in a couple years. Not sure if it will be next year, but maybe 2016??
SP - Jose Fernandez, 92 - Jose.
SP - Jon Lester, 100 - Really came into his own this year. Contract year? or is he really that good? If so, I'll have two SP keepers who have top 10 stuff.
SP - Kevin Gausman, 177 - Excited for his potential. He's yet to showcase it.
RP - Addison Reed, 218 - The Jose Mesa of closers.

While its not as robust as some other squads, its certainly better and should I improve my outfield situation, I could make some noise net year!

I am surprised to see Marcus Stroman not included on that list given he was a rotowire top 20 prospect and BP top 25 prospect coming into the year.

Also, I really have to tip my hat to Guru and Species. What a masterful job they have done with their rosters. Both took that leap from bottom feeder to contenders next season. Great job, guys.

Blue Hen August 1 Report

Well, there's not much to say at this point. I have a 19 point lead, and things are moving on all cylinders. Guru and Toral still have some time to catch up, but my team has a great head start. Most importantly, I should get to 20 in wins and K's without much streaming, which should help my ERA and WHIP stay up. Just need the hitting to hold together for the last couple months.

Also want to call out that I finished July with a 0.97 WHIP in 238 innings. Awesome.

Only big news items are Tulowitzski (not so great) and Gyorko (appears good). Hopefully Tulo comes back soon and Gyorko recaptures the magic. So far, so good on both fronts.

Good luck to everyone the rest of the season. Slightly less luck to Toral and Guru (and Ref and WG). Should be a fun one!

I don't have a strong opinion, but it warrants discussion.

An earlier deadline leaves more teams in contention at the deadline, and encourages trading. In a couple weeks, more teams are going to start dropping out and there will be trades for the future with 16 teams that are out of it and 4 teams still competing. Pushing the deadline back means 12 teams trading with 8.

That's why MLB makes it more difficult to trade after August 1 (as precedent).

Still looking for a keeper quality hitter in exchange for a pitcher. One of the big three can be had for a superstar hitter, or perhaps a combination of one of Cole, Arrieta, Odorizzi, or Britton.

This isn't about stolen bases (although I'm still interested), more about shifting my potential keepers from pitchers to hitters.

I've fallen into an interesting, and somewhat troubling pattern the last few years between what I draft and how I place:

2011: Hitting 33, Pitching 29.5

2012 Draft: 3 hitters, 2 pitchers taken in first 5 picks

2012: 38.5, 41

2013 Draft: 2 hitters, 3 pitchers

2013: 14, 62.5

2014 Draft: 4 hitters, 1 pitcher

2014 (to date): 73, 31

So the pattern is fixing one side in the draft leads to the other side falling apart, so then that gets fixed in the next draft and so on and so on.

Great trade. I think blue hen could have extracted more overall value for an ace like Scherzer, but Altuve fits his specific needs to perfection (a basestealing MI) and gives him a much more palatable keeper mix. Additionally, hen gets younger and reduces some risk on aging pitchers.

Nerf gets a legit ace for his staff that needed one. Altuve is a nice niche player but not a star, so IMO he got really nice value for him.

Now that he's on my team, I can call Altuve a star, right?

Species hit it on the head - I had a very specific need, and it was met. I was looking at either Altuve or Dee Gordon (who isn't as good but could fill the SS gap until Tulo gets back) with pitching to give. But Judy wasn't budging on Gordon. I still have 5 keeper-quality SP, so feeling good here.

Nerf and I match up well and we talked about a variety of players on both sides. In the end, we kept it simple.

Side benefit - by less than an hour, I get Scherzer's start tomorrow.

I was actually not too eager to trade Altuve, since it's so hard to find that many steals from an MI. But BH took the chance on the offer I didn't think he'd be willing to make, and I had to bite. I still think it's easier to find good pitching than SB, but at that quality I had to go for it.

Agreed. Stanton is awesome. I'll take a brief moment to scoff at the thread from last year, then pinpoint my focus on a 2014 championship.

Looking to add a shortstop, third baseman, or outfielder, preferably one that is contributing but an unlikely keeper. About-to-retire players are acceptable.

Looking to move Jedd Gyorko, Jake Arrieta, Zach Britton, Jonathan Schoop, or Colin Moran.

Let's talk.

Right, that's my point. We knew Pete was going to win the deal in the long run. But I was making a short term move. Fielder was the only one who performed wildly below expectations immediately. Replace him with a similar player, say Edwin Encarnacion, and I probably wind up winning last year.

We had this trade last year:
------------
6-12-13 slizz receives WG's 8th rounder* (conditionally) for his 14th (Brothers)
*8th rounder is the lowest pick this can be, contingent upon the number of Rex Brothers saves in 2014 -- COMMISH NOTE: this is irrespective of whether WG keeps him or not. Whatever the save number is, that's the pick he gives up:
Rex Brothers 2014 Saves
00-9 - 8th
10-19 - 7th
20-29 - 6th
30-39 - 5th
40+ - 4th
--------------
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Brothers will not exceed 9 saves this year and clean up the constitution. Posting here for posterity in case the Rockies go on a huge run of back-to-back wins that Hawkins can't clean up (which for Brothers to get enough saves would probably require 10 nights of food poisoning for the rest of the Rockies bullpen!).

Blue Hen September 1 Report

Well, here we are. Entering September with a huge lead. Anything less than a championship will be a major disappointment at this point. Fortunately, we've got a little cushion and some hot hands.

Since we spoke last Max Scherzer is gone and Jose Altuve is here. I suspect we can make up for Scherzer's innings, and Altuve is already paying off. Would love about 10 steals in September.

In other areas, some pickups have been great, including 21-year old Jose Ramirez and DBacks leadoff hitter Ender Inciarte, both scoring runs and stealing bases. And while Troy Tulowitzki and Shin Shoo Choo have been lost to injury, Gerrit Cole and Jedd Gyorko have come back strong. Gyorko, in particular, really needed it, and now looks back to his keeper-quality self.

As expected, Wazaap Guy is back in the race and making 18 other owners look silly (Quackenbush, really?), and Guru, Toral, and AA are still hanging around.

Oh yeah, and we had a bluehen jr. this month! She's only a couple weeks old, but I'm planning to let her manage my football teams.

Should be a great finish! Good luck to all, except WG and Guru, of course. See you in October!

Team Slizz September Report

What a difference one month makes. I was as low as mid-90's in July and have slowly made the climb back up to the 120 threshold, which was my goal at the beginning of the season. I know 120 is a pretty crappy goal to have, but it was unreasonable to expect anything more considering the quality of my keepers. For example, the highest ADP I had for a hitter was 218 (Rendon).

My pitching has maintained itself and hopefully I can get a boost in strikeouts and wins. With my staff finally healthy (Pineda) and my young bucks up from AAA (Paxton and Gausman), I can reasonably expect a 5 point boost in Strikeouts and Wins. I also hope to gain some ground in hitting with Hosmer and Garcia back. Shoot, 130 is not completely out of the question. Either way, I am happy with the results of the team without my best player, Jose.

Maybe next year I can make some noise atop the standings...that said, its going to be awfully tough with a couple teams at the bottom (namely Species and Pete) poised to make big runs next season.

Going forward, I actually have decisions to make for keepers. Here is my list

SUREFIRE:
1B - Hosmer (UGH UGH UGH! To think, I could have Kris)
2B - Rendon
3B - Arenado
SP - Jose
RP - Reed

LIKELY:
SP - Lester (Depending on landing spot...probably CHC)
OF - Ozuna (23 years old with 25-30 HR power...only going to improve)
OF - Arcia (Soft spot for the guy! Young with a boat load of potential)

COMPETING FOR SPOTS:
DH - Chris Carter (Might be the most unimpressive 40 HR campaign...)
OF - Avisail Garcia (talent wise, he should be kept...however, his on base % rivals BJ Upton's...which is never a good thing if you aren't stealing 40 SB)
SP - Rick "Quality Start" Porcello
SP - Kevin Gausman (hasn't even tapped into his potential...worth keeper consideration
SP - Michael Pineda (hard to argue with the results...injury concern is whats keeping me thinking)
SP - James Paxton (Results have been great, pitches in Seattle, and is only going to get better)

I know it is ridiculous to list all those players, but an argument can be made for each of them to be kept...They are the players who either round out rosters in G20 or are taken in the first round of the supplemental draft.

I would like to bring up what I feel is an unintentional loophole in our prospect rules surrounding the "call up and renounce" ability.

The way our rules work.....a prospect that exceeds their at bat or IP threshold, and is NOT on an active roster may continue to remain on the prospect list through the offseason (this isn't where the problem is). Only at the Prospect Keeper deadline must we apply the AB/IP threshold.

Since the regular 9-keeper deadline happens before the prospect keeper deadline, this creates a loophole. Take my prospect Rougned Odor. He has now exceeded 300 ABs and may not be kept as a prospect next year. However, I could call up and renounce him after keepers (for a '10th keeper').....which is before the Prospect Keeper deadline. This loophole IMO violates the intent of the rule.

I would suggest amending the rule to apply the AB/IP limit at the *regular* keeper deadline. In this case, Odor ceases being a prospect and I still retain the option of keeping him, but he would then have to be in my main 9 keepers.

This would have no effect on the "call up and renounce" move for prospects that retain prospect eligibility. You can still make that move for a '10th keeper', so long as they were still eligible to remain on the prospect list.

For example, it's a pretty good bet that Cleveland SS Francisco Lindor will be given the SS role next year. Guru can announce his 9 keepers.....then call up and renounce Lindor before Prospect Keepers are declared. Guru gets his '10th keeper' while simultaneously opening up a spot on his prospect list.

Thoughts???

Species - makes sense but that has always been the rule. I had that happen with Jose Fernandez last year where I sent him down to have an extra spot for the current (2013) season. To my understanding, once a prospect exceeds the thresholds, they may only be kept as part of the 9 (case and point - Jose).

That had always been my assumption as well. You can't use 10th keeper rights on someone who has exceeded the threshold. That happened to me with Rosenthal last year, and with Stanton and Hosmer in the past, and with Schoop, Black, and Webb this year.

We always did at the all star break and at the end of the season previously. Now that the all star break is gone--the end of the season still fits. So all players called up to your team are automatically sent down and anyone who is not on your team but above the threshold is put on your team and removed from the prospect list.

Need to clarify something prior to the offseason, re: keeping prospects.

Right now, I have 5 prospect picks (my 3, plus one each from Guru and Great One), and 2 current prospects (Gallo & Moran). My interpretation of the rules is that I can keep one prospect for each pick that I own. So if I were to trade Species and get Sano, Seager, and Alfaro, I would be able to keep all 5, using my 5 picks.

Some of our language says there is a limit of 3 prospect keepers; my interpretation is that it assumes you only have 3 prospect picks, and we really mean 1 pick = 1 prospect. That was my assumption when I traded for additional picks.

Thoughts?

399: Everyone must get down to a maximum of 3 prospects on their team before prospect keeper deadline. If you do not give up your rights to them and have 3 or less and none traded, they are kept--no announcement necessary.

You are eligible to draft up to three prospects per year. If you have traded or kept a prospect, then that reduces the amount you can keep/draft.

If you have traded FOR a pdraft pick, that has no bearing on your draft, only the manager who traded him to you.

So in your scenario, assuming your guys won't hit their threshold by the end of the year and aren't renounced, you are due one prospect pick that is yours and two from other managers.

After all these years the prospect rules for this league still confuse me.

If you trade for two prospect picks, and already have two prospects, you can use all three prospect picks and thus have 5 prospects?

If so, then you can keep the 5 prospects until the next prospect keeper deadline, which would be almost a whole year?

I thought we got rid of any loophole that would give a team more than 3 prospects.

I think the key was keeping the league total at 60 prospects. Why is it so wrong for one team to have more than 3 prospects, if they traded for a prospect pick? That means another team only has 2, and the general depth of the pool is the same.

Ok, I have a rule proposal.

Starting with the 2016 prospect deadline, teams that have (more than 3 prospects eligible to keep) and (more than 3 prospect picks, including any acquired by trade), may keep the same number of prospects as picks.

Maintain the existing caveat that any picks used to keep a prospect are forfeiting during the prospect draft.

Reasoning: keeping three prospects is arbitrary, especially now that we have moved the prospect draft. Every manager gets three prospect picks a year, and they may use them how they see fit, including trading to other managers who wish to keep more than three prospects.

404: I would support such an amendment.

401: As the rules stand now, the only time where we have to drop to 3 or fewer prospects is at the Prospect Keeper deadline. After that, whether you traded for additional prospects, or traded for another team's prospect picks, you may go over 3 prospects at any time during the year....and only need to get down to three or less at the Prospect Keeper deadline.

Ref is correct, in that when this league established its prospect rules that the threshold of no greater than 60 total prospects was established. That is a legacy rule that many teams wish to keep........so I, for one, have not considered changing that.

blue hen's proposal does not change that.....it just allows for shuffling of the deck in whatever manner each manager feels fits their team. These prospects and prospect picks have value. For some teams, their value system (or interest in prospects) values those picks less than others. This could allow for more spirited trading, conceivably resulting in an increased value to those picks.

-----------
In other news, several non-G20 baseball managers have yet to check in on the G20 Hoops thread. Neither has bmd.

If you, or someone you know, is interested in a G20 Hoops opening, we appear to have 2 spots open.

408: I am with Toral on this. I will never support a rule change that would go over 60 prospects. To be honest, that is probably too many. It thins the FA pool. We have some top players who are FAs right now simply sitting there with teams not using them. So they are worthless. If they were being used, then at least someone else was in the FA pool we had potential to use. Maybe if we cut it down to 40 total prospects that wouldn't happen as often and some people wouldn't reach for a guy who might join the majors in 5 years down the road.

If darkside trades allhair a prospect pick, allhair has 4, and darkside has 2. This will never put us over 60 prospects, total.

I believe teams should be able to help improve themselves however they see fit, and if that means trading for prospect picks and building through the farm system, then so be it.

How is loading up on prospects "tanking" any worse than what happens now? What issues are you trying to avoid?

Keep in mind there is an ongoing cost to keeping more than 3 prospects. Each year you would have to again acquire an additional prospect pick to offset the additional prospect(s). It's not a one-time cost.

412 At the extreme I am trying to avoid some clever rebuilder using as much as he has to get 15 prospect picks and therefore 15 prospects, and thereby change the nature of the league. Of course he's need to recharge with 15 prospect picks per year. But I don't consider that's my obligation to try to figure out just how outrageous any given manager could get with a change and still make it work in order not to be for it.

How does one manager having 15 prospects change anything, assuming he (or Judy) successfully executed trades for 12 additional prospect picks? There some managers in this league that barely make 12 regular moves a year; if someone is shrewd enough to get 12 extra prospect picks, then so be it - especially if he can only keep them for one year.

Your suggested change will I guess will appeal to those who don't think allowing teams to rebuild with 15 prospects and tanking doesn't change the nature of the league. (And of course since they'd be finishing last until their prospects mature, they could recharge by annually trading away their draft choices, which they wouldn't need anyway.)

Will update this after the season. Data from 2011-2014 is available at links like this: http://games.espn.go.com/flb/standings?leagueId=28926&seasonId=2011.

The strikeout record has already fallen (by a lot, and with innings to spare), and ERA (definitely) and WHIP (probably) are also tracking to fall.

RE: 404 - I would support a proposal like that, with a slight tweak. For example:

BH owns GO's 2015 1st Rd P-Draft Pick. He can:
A) keep one of his existing prospects as a 4th prospect keeper, or;
B) use the pick GO has to draft.

Come 2016, BH would need to acquire an additional 2016 p-draft pick in order to maintain 4 prospect keepers, otherwise he would have to get down to 3 like the rest of us in 2016.

A rule like that would allow us maintain the integrity of 60 prospects while preventing prospect hoarding.

RE: 407 - haha, I honestly was expecting to have a repeat of last year where I was left hanging out to dry for Gregory Polanco. At least I get someone with potential similar to Polanco!

422: That is exactly the intent of the proposal. IF you have an extra prospect pick, you can choose to use that pick to keep an extra prospect of you may make the draft pick as normal.

Pretty good finish from my Red Crosses of Doom! Funny that 12 of my 23 players were acquired via FA wire. Most of them were nabbed toward the end.

Congratulations to bluehen on his victory. Not sure if it was actually wire-to-wire? but it was close.

I was going to mention what a great race there was for positions 2-5, and how I was drafting this year under personal issues and was expecting to be out of the running, and the cunning strategy that had me in second place much of the year,...but being as I was passed by everybody in that race in September and had a calamitous final weekend I don't think I'll bother.

Blue Hen Victory Speech 2014

This is going to be difficult. Can you imagine an epic victory speech on par with the epic nature of the victory? It would need to be written, rewritten, and rewritten once again. And who has time for that?

That goes to the key part of my platform: having time. More on that later.

Let's review the season.

History/Keepers: Including a half-championship in 2011, the BH team is always a contender. It is usually strong in on-base percentage, saves, and strikeouts, and almost always leads the league in moves made. Since 2011, we've had two disappointments, including 2013 when two key players were lost for the last two months of the season.

In the push for 2013, several long-held assets were traded, including Matt Kemp, Elvis Andrus, Eric Hosmer, and Giancarlo Stanton. It was a double whammy, as the 2013 crown never materialized, and keepers were weakened.

Two big trades happened in the offseason: Ryan Braun for Troy Tulowitzki and Anthony Rizzo for a huge pile of picks, one of which turned out to be David Ortiz.

A good draft would have sealed the deal. It was not to be. After Ortiz, Nate Jones and Jarrod Parker were drafted, and both were dropped by April 10. The rest of the draft wasn't much better, with only 4 modest performers: Jason Castro, Eric Young, BJ Upton, and Matt Dominguez. All were disappointments, but they were easily highlights of the draft.

Even with great keepers, it was looking like a rough season. Pitching was a disaster. Then, it happened. Max Scherzer and David Price righted the ship. Chris Sale continued to dominate. Prince Fielder got injured and traded for Gerrit Cole (and Sergio Romo, who was surprisingly decent for me). Trevor Rosenthal started saving games. And perhaps the best in-season haul of pitchers was acquired off waivers: Jake Arrieta, Jake Odorizzi, Zach Britton, and Dellin Betances just went off, leading the team to records in K's, ERA, and WHIP (though ERA was also broken by Guru this year).

By the All-Star Break, the lead was huge, and we coasted to victory.

But we're skipping the important part. In mid-August, my daughter was born. A real live "Blue Hen Jr". We actually spent time in the delivery room watching Jake Arrieta dominate the Mets. And my team went berserk that day with like 8 homers and 5 wins. Or so it seemed.

I get it. I get that some managers have different priorities. There isn't always time to check your lineup, because you're busy checking a diaper. Sometimes, the time just gets away. I learned a thing or two about managing priorities. And believe it or not, with the season wrapped up in mid-September, I stopped checking my team.

However, that doesn't let everyone off the hook in every situation. This is a popular league with demand - more managers waiting than spots available. If you're only going to check on G20 a few times a month, please consider giving up your spot. New managers can breathe life into the league - look at Wazaaap Guy. No shame in leaving a league - much better than leaving a team in a keeper league floundering from year to year.

I promised I'd give a Manager of the Year Award, to give the rest of you guys something to fight over. So many worthy candidates.

WG overcame some of the worst injury issues we've ever seen and finished in the money. With almost no draft picks.

Species is in perhaps the final year of his rebuild and looks like he'll be dominant in 2015.

Slizz overcame some previous keeper issues and finally built his team into a contender, finishing 7th with a pretty young team.

Ref and Toral had their usual magic, getting more out of their teams than almost anyone else in the league.

But this year's winner of the Manager of the Year Award is Guru. Several years of mediocrity were shaken off this year, and Guru became a "legit contender." Despite losing Patrick Corbin before the year started, Guru was near the top all year, finding just the right player at the right time. He picked precisely the right pitchers, especially Corey Kluber, Garrett Richards, and Tanner Roark, and put up the best ERA this league has ever seen.

Congrats, Guru, and good luck next year - but not too much luck!

That's about all I have to say - hopefully this isn't too long-winded. For the rest of you, let's hope 2015 is even better than 2014 (except Ref, of course - need you to finish the same or lower next year).

Let's get those offseason moves going. I need a third baseman! Who wants David Price? How about Joey Gallo?

See you in February!

Thanks, bh. The most amazing aspect was that my team started out "turrible", and I spent April and part of May mulling over tanking/rebuilding strategies, in dead last place for much of that span.

By August, I was on a roll for about a week or so and had a firm grip on 2nd place. Unfortunately, by that time, Springer was already out (and never did return, though I didn't know that at the time). Soon thereafter I lost Garrett Richards and Rizzo, and Brandon Moss went into a prolonged funk. Victorino got injured shortly after showing some spark. Joe Smith had recently lost his closing gig. My ranking started to fade, and I thought I might be cooked. I was able to deal Corbin for KRod who preserved my position in saves (his saves were worth 5 points at year end, which would have put me in 5th place.

The battle for 2nd-5th during September was intense. Somehow, I managed to squeak out a 3rd place finish, with some clutch pitching down the stretch (although wins were tough to come by, even with quite a few quality starts.) Fortunetly, my pitching ratios had some margin for slippage, so I was able to be more aggressive with streaming starters in search of wins.

One of those "streaming" SPs was Collmenter, who ended up staying on the roster for the last six weeks, giving me 50 IP (7 starts, all QS), 3 wins, 1.28 ERA, and 0.68 WHIP. Too bad he didn't pitch for a better team, because he certainly pitched well enough for more than 3 wins in 7 starts.

For the first time in recent memory, I've got more viable keepers then I can hang on to. I'll probably go into next year with strong starting pitching (Kluber, Richards, Roark, and maybe Lynn) - all of whom were picked up in this year's supplemental draft.

2. Red Crosses of Doom - 154.5 (2%)
3. Roto Guru - 145, 120%
4. Wazaaap Guy - 144, (12%)

18. Team Tosh - 62.5 (36%)
19. Giancarlo, Inc - 50 (40%)
20. GO's Gaslight Anthem - 48 (39.2%)

Keep in mind, this is assuming the player stays healthy and meets their projections for the season. Based on this, I have to echo BH's sentiment in nominating Guru for manager of the year. He spent a fortune to bring Rizzo on board, saw Springer catapault him in the standings, and managed to draft two, not one, but TWO front end starters in Richards and Kluber to make him a legit title contender the following season. Bold Moves paid off.

As for me, I am just happy to have hitting keepers that are worth keeping instead of getting ranked outside the top 200 (highest was Rendon at 216!) I feel I might have done the most with the least keeper wise, but guru did a fantastic job and deserves the be commended and recognized for it.

EXIT INTERVIEWS

Team Slizz finished on a high note, achieving their goal of 120 points on the season. We were one of the stronger teams from August to September and gave the fans something to look forward to in 2015. Our season ticket sales are up, a new TV contract was just negotiated, and all over the country fan interest is up! As you know, we operate in full transparency at Team Slizz so nevertheless, here are the exit interviews...hope you guys enjoy!

1B - Eric Hosmer: Let him know that he is going to be an important part of Team Slizz for years to come. Coming from the midwest, it was an adjustment going to a major media market here in Philadelphia. He was more disappointed than I was in his production than I was. That said, Hosmer assured me he's committed to improving himself to be the franchise cornerstone we expect him to be...and he wants to prove the doubters wrong and show he was worth the price of Kris Bryant.

2B - Anthony Rendon: O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done...What more can I say about the heart and soul of Team Slizz. He held us together in hard times when Jose went down. He is a motivated, self-starter who sets the tone for this team. Ever since he got here by way of the Matt Holliday trade, he is the first in the building and last to leave and wants to be the example the rest of the squad can strive for

3B - Nolan Arenado: Nolan is young and still trying to find his niche on this team. He seemed upset when meeting as he wished he could've done more for us. I showed him some of his highlights which got him in a better mood and after a little pep talk from Captain Rendon, he left fired up for the offseason...

SS - Danny Santana: He thanked me for the opportunity to be an everyday player after he was cut by WG because of his injury. As a pending free agent outfield convert, he informed me he intends to test the waters and we parted amicably.

OF - Marcell Ozuna: Marcell has a certain swagger about him. He still wants to prove the doubters wrong that he should've been picked before the 5th round!

OF - Oswaldo Arcia: No, he does not have naked photos of me hidden somewhere...I have to say, this was not the most pleasant meeting as he got a tongue lashing for his lack of work ethic. I showed him some of his homeruns and stressed to him that he needs to cease the opportunity he has in front of him. He seemed to get the message.

OF - Rusney Castillo: Team Slizz' international scouting department worked hard to find this gem. They assured me he was the real deal and could be key in the SB race for 2016. We are excited for what the future might hold...

OF - Avisail Garcia: He was just as disappoitned as I was to get knocked out by a freak injury so early in the season. He worked hard to rehab himself into game shape and was a key part to the September surge. I wish Garcia nothing but the best in his career.

DH - Chris Carter: Very productive meeting. Coach Grace, the hitting instructor, worked tirelessly with Chris after the allstar break after finding a hole in his swing. All parties involved were encouraged by how he responded. Before exiting, Mr. Carter assured us "the best is yet to come".

SP - Jose Fernandez: Jose was excited to share with us he is cleared to start throwing from a mound on October 1st. Given his importance to this team, we have kept him included in all team activities and he can't wait to come back in 2015.

SP - Jon Lester: Jon brought that championship mentality to Team Slizz. With the help of Anthony, he has the troops believing that they can compete for a money spot next season

RP - Addison Reed: He comes to work each day, gives his best effort, and leaves knowing he did the best he could. He got a little sensitive when I asked him about his September swoon, but added his arm was a little tired. He is already meeting with nutritionists to improve his diet so he has some gas left in the tank for 2015.

I'll admit, I had fun writing the first few, but don't have the time to come up with creative things to say about the other pitchers like Porcello, Stroman, Gausman, Paxton, Pineda, and role players like Kendrys...

I'll do some team by team reviews as the offseason progresses.

Congrats to BH.
Congrats to Species on having my #1 overall pick next year. Definitely an early favorite the way everything is set up... on paper (the kiss of death!).

I do predict I have a better season next year. I will have more than 50 points! A bold statement I know. I will be looking for a couple more keepers, I have intentionally left myself short. Although I did pick up some possible guys late in Sept. like Anibal and Gallardo. But I don't plan to add any keepers until close to the keeper deadline next year, when I can see everyone's leftovers.

2014 Season in Review:

Keepers:
I had a mish-mash of good but not great players, some coming off down years, others with suspensions or injuries.
Jose Altuve - A decent 2013 but really only valuable in the steals category. Young enough that he had to be a keeper. And he broke out in a big way this year - 46 steals through 118 games with a high OBP. More on him later.
Pedro Alvarez - My best offensive player from last year, but disappointing season this year. Was doing well enough offensively to keep his job, but lost it and sat on my bench most of the second half.
Nelson Cruz - An enigma if there ever was one. I had no idea what he would do coming off a PED suspension. He was potentially my best offensive keeper, and it turns out he was, leading the majors in home runs.
Todd Frazier - I almost did not keep him, as he was generally bad last year after I got him in a trade. I felt I had to get something from that trade so he was kept, and he was incredible. 20/20 out of a third baseman is a rare feat.
James Shields - The stalwart of my team, as steady as steady can be. More of the same this year.
Homer Bailey - I have to say this year was a little disappointing. He started off poorly, then got good again, and then got hurt.
Andrew Cashner - He was great last year, and great this year when he pitched, but he only pitched in 19 games. I'm not sure if he is going to be a 200 IP guy.
Grant Balfour - Disastrous season. I kept him longer than I should have, hoping he'd get his job back.
Jon Axford - A rerun of 2013. Got shelled early in the year and lost his closers job. At least this year he got 10 saves before that.

2014 Draft:
I felt I did pretty well in the draft this year, getting some role-players and perhaps two keepers for next year.
Curtis Granderson - Meh is all I can say. Was bad, then good, then bad again, then ok in September. He hit my runs and HR mark, but missed on RBI and SB I was looking for from a 1st rounder. He's gone from good to playable sometimes.
Evan Gattis - When he played, he was good, but only played 115 games. He might be keeper quality, but he has to stay on the field.
Ryan Howard and Erik Aybar - Two guys I got to solidify positions for one year, and they did exactly that. I think they both hit my projections smack on.
Rajai Davis - I needed him for the steals and bet on him playing more and being good in an expanded role. And he was! 36 steals and more pop than I would have expected.
Jake Peavy - He was bad, and then I dropped him, and he was good again. Bleh.
Sean Doolittle - My namesake finally became the closer and he was great. I just wished he had more saves chances. Certified keeper for next year.
Jones and Joyce - I had these guys pretty much all year as backups and they were fine in that role.
Chacin and Stults - Bad with bad on top.

In-season moves:
I only make in-season moves when I have to - I don't really stream or do anything like that unless I think I need it to win. That being said, I had 4 pitchers who got off waivers who performed very well.
Bud Norris - I had him last year, and this year he was even better. 3.20 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 13 wins in 22 starts.
Matt Shoemaker - This guy came out of nowhere! I picked him on his second trip to the rotation, he was incredible. 2.69 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 10 wins in 14 starts.
JA Happ - Not quite as good as the two guys above, but still solid for a guy who hadn't done much before. 3.91 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, but only 3 wins in 15 starts. Whe I got Happ I was desperate for anyone who could just get quality starts, so in that regard he was fine.
Andrew Miller - When I finally dumped Balfour, I picked up Miller and he was great. 2 wins, a save, 27 K's, 1.20 ERA, and .047 WHIP in 15 innings. It's like getting two starts from Randy Johnson in his prime at the end of the season.

Trades:
2013 trades had a huge impact on this 2014 team. I got Cruz and Cashner in one deal, and Frazier in another. They were all important players for me. I only made one trade this year - Altuve for Scherzer. Scherzer didn't prove to be all that great down the stretch, but he is a proven star, which is something this team needed. I really hated to give up Altuve, as I love him to death.

The Season:
This season was a tale of two halves for me. On June 30th my pitching staff was sitting on a 4.22 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, with only 32 wins in 700 IP. My hitting on the other hand was smoking - leading or close to it in HR, RBI, OBP, and SB. Then in the second half as my hitting started to fade, my pitching soared - 3.03 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 42 wins, and 584 K's in 650 IP in the second half.

This changed the dynamic of my team going forward. In July I was wondering if I was going to keep any of my starting pitchers. Now I suddenly have an abundance of good pitchers, and perhaps not the hitters I thought I had.

So all in all a successful season - I finally got into the top half of the field, had some good on both sides, acquired a top shelf player, and finally have a team I think can compete, especially if I can get the hitting from the first half and the pitching from the second half for a whole season, together.

3-6-14 Species receives Ref's 2nd, 4th and 7th for his 10th, 11th and 12th (2014 picks)
6-3-14 blue hen receives GO's 4th for his 14th (Fielder)
6-25-14 mjd receives GoatLocker's 6th for his 14th (Melancon)

435: Thanks GO! And don't forget I have your 3rd and 4th as well. Needless to say, I did not expect this kind of bounty in terms of all of those being 1st!

I am so excited about next year's draft that I did the draft grid already. I'll ask Guru to post. Some Team Species draft grid highlights:

- 2 of the first 6 picks
- I traded my 6th and my 8th through 14th picks
- I have 5 of the first 46 picks
- I have 7 of the first 66 picks
- I have 10 picks by pick 5.07

That's a little overkill. I might have to trade back some of those into 2016. If you're interested, let me know.

Team Species Year End Report

The wait is finally over!! After 3 seasons of deconstruction and rebuilding, the pieces have come together quite nicely (if I say so myself!) and in short order I get to see if this has been worth it. I have a lot of bullets in the gun ready, including two stud top-10 prospect third basemen in Miguel Sano and Corey Seager ready to come up soon or be peddled in a 2015 title-sealing trade.

Keepers
Heading into the season, I kept:
Santana
Longoria
Kemp
Myers
Felix
Stephenson
Beltran
Rodney
Archer

Beltran, Archer and Rodney were dispatched about 90 minutes after the keeper deadline to Jaydog in exchange for injured Matt Harvey. I had worked, prodded, poked and stalked Jaydog since Harvey's injury in 2013 to make a deal of this nature. I leveraged my lack of keepers to give Jaydog a stable of solid performers to make a run this year. Sadly, half of his team got hurt (Votto, Cain, Hamilton again, etc). Rodney led the league in saves, Archer put up a quietly good year (3.33 ERA, 173 k's) while unfortunately Beltran sucked ass.

This gave me the second ace I desired at a palatable cost. It fit perfectly for Jaydog and perfectly for me.

Prospect Draft
With the 4 studs for this draft, I had made a trade to get Guru's prospect pick, which, pre-lottery, was slated 4th. I had the 1st pick pre-lottery. I felt pretty good. Until the lottery screwed me and I ended up 3rd and 6th.....nearly the worst possible outcome. I tried desperately to move up from 6th into the top 2 to secure 2 of the big 3. No dice. Slizz outbid me on the #1 pick, and Nerf had his heart set on Polanco (rightfully so), so I was "stuck" at 3rd.

Stuck with Jose Abreu. Darn it.

After REALLY waffling on what to do at 6, I nearly took Yordano Ventura or Joc Pederson. But I decided to go for even higher upside in Corey Seager, and I'm glad I did. He's fantastic, and while he doesn't have the phenomenal power upside of Gallo, he also has a much lower chance of flopping. Great hit tool, strong power, lefty swing. I can't wait to see him abuse AA this year and be ready for the Dodgers in 2016.

Supplemental Draft
This was a "LOLdraft" for me. I didn't have a pick until 8.01 after dispatching my top 7 picks in various trades, including getting ARcher and Rodney - which led to Matt Harvey - along with a pick swap with Ref to get extra picks in 2016.

I intended to do a "setup man" strategy, picking closers in waiting and trading those players once the inevitable closer shuffle happened. Apparently everyone else read my playbook because all of the good ones were already long gone. I tried to get upside guys that I could trade, and I got some bums to fill out my roster. I think the only deal I made was Buehrle and Beckett for Odor. I got Arismendy Alcantara, and he is an absolutely viable keeper for somebody next year with his power/speed combo.

Oh. I did trade Matt Kemp for a then-hurt Jay Bruce while poor Jaydog was still trying to keep his M*A*S*H unit together. Kemp got hurt not long thereafter and I felt pretty bad. The joke was eventually on me, as Kemp surged and Bruce endured his worst year ever. I expect a full comeback to normal production for him next year.

Potential keepers for 2015
Keepers are looking pretty sweet for next year:

1b Abreu
SS Bogaerts (not worried - will be fine)
3b Longoria
OF Myers (not worried)
OF Bruce (not worried)
1b/3b/dh Santana (wished he could've squeaked out C eligibility)
SP Felix (his best year ever - wow)
SP Harvey
SP deGrom (what a year!)
RP Familia?

Thanks GO for the kiss of death.....I am just so stoked to be going into an offseason with the title back in my sights. Don't celebrate too long bh....I'm coming!

Let's resolve the WG-BH challenge trade of 2014 right now.

We swapped 11ths in the deal, but I had already given my 11th to Species in Kemp deal. Obviously, trying to block the memory of Kemp plus the temptations of Third Avenue wreaked havoc on my trading skills.

To rectify this, let's make it 10th rounders instead of 11th rounders. Looks like WG was already given my 10th, so all we need to do is update:
- 11.17 to WG, not bold
- 10.17 to BH, bold
- 11.20 remains with Species, bold italic

I guess we can wait for WG to confirm, but the alternative is that the deal is null and void (since my 11th didn't exist), which is worse for him.

Well, my team could not have been much worse. I expected some prospects to arrive mid season and of course, not only did they not arrive, they might not be up next year (Bradley, Russell).

My pitching was just awful and I could not find anyone to pick up. I finished on the low side in IP. Cliff Lee killed a few categories, as did most phillies players. I was last in WHIP but top half in ERA. Go figure that one. I also have no sluggers..

Looking at next year, I suggest these folks as possible keepers:

Freeman
Gordon
McCann
Pagan (if healthy)
Hunter (?)
A Cabrera

Cobb
Cosart
Lee (if healthy)
Salazar
Bradley (kept but never came up...)
Volquez

Not that much to get excited about.
Prospects who should be up:
A. Russell (but where on the field and when?)
Franco (Amaro too dumb to promote him)

Despite what you might think I DO manage my team several times a week. I just tend to stay pat rather than take chances...so that's why there are not many moves...

What we have always done before is that if you traded a pick you no longer owned you had to give away a higher pick. So, if you traded your 8th rounder and you didn't have an 8th to trade, you had to send your 7th. No 7th either? Then it's a 6th and so on. Sometimes, a commish catches it when he puts in the terms, but with so many trades it can be difficult.

Why would it be your 4th, rather than your next year's 5th? Or something of "similar value."

I've made a bunch of deals where I've had to remind the other owner they didn't have that pick. Obviously, if losing my scruples gets me an extra round in the deal, it's time to stop being nice.

Re: 453 - that's theft in the great state of New Jersey.

You deprived the business owner of the hotdog. He already made the hotdog therefore he could not sell it to someone else. The nj statue is as follows:

2C:20-4 - Theft by deception:

c.Fails to correct a false impression which the deceiver previously created or reinforced, or which the deceiver knows to be influencing another to whom he stands in a fiduciary or confidential relationship.

You deprived WG of that 10th round pick as you were engaged in a fiduciary relationship (the bet). You now failed to make good on that 10th round and therefore owe him a 9th...

I don't have time to look but jaydog traded me his 12th in last years s-draft in exchange for my 2014 12th (I think) for his 2014 14th only that he didn't have a 2014 14th so I received his 13th.

Actually you would be arrested and issued a summons for same. You would then be forced to show up to court where you would be issued a fine and be forced to pay back restitution to the hotdog vendor.

Species is the judge so he could technically punish you (i.e. the fine) by way of draft pick penalty using your hotdog example.

bh's arguments are entertaining but pointless. He entered into a contract to make a trade. He can't put the hotdog back. My ruling is you must surrender a higher pick due to your inability to fulfill the trade.

This does bring up an interesting quandry for next year's Prospect Draft. Guru traded bh his 3rd roumd pick. What if he wants to keep a prospect? You could look at it two ways:

- Guru must be forced to adhere to the terms of the trade and keep no prospects, thus having the 3rd he traded.
- Guru could keep a prospect (or two for that matter) and have to surrender a higher pick.

I guess I am looking ahead to a situation that may not occur, but bh and I talked about it and I wondered what I would do.....as I don't believe I have ever seen a 3rd round prospect pick traded before.

First of all, trading the pick forfeits Guru's right to keep a third prospect. Unless, of course, he wants to go through with it, in which case I am entitled to his second pick, by New Jersey theft law.

Last point on the hot dog- the vendor hadn't made it yet (I hadn't made or traded the return pick yet), so he just tells me to get lost without any exchange. Now, I could find another way to pay if I really wanted the hot dog (like Jaydog, who essentially gave his watch instead), but in most cases, the deal is voided. How do I know? It actually happened to me today. In this case, I had a 5 and no 1's and he didn't have change. Unlike this case, he actually offered it to me for free, but in the end we just parted ways.

Anyway, I disagree but won't push it further. It's not fair to you that I am a superior manager, so I will accept this handicap. WG probably needs the help.

That doesn't take into account the loss of OBP or opportunity cost of guys you had to drop or other guys taken by someone else you were unable to get. As minimal as that cost may be, I doubt it is zero. I know it cost me a lot by having to drop guys I couldn't get back and that was mostly from injuries I simply had to cover to make my lineup legal.

Glad you brought that up. I'd say it had the opposite effect. Sure, dropping Jarrod Dyson, Brock Holt, JD Martinez, and Danny Santana weren't perfect moves, but there are a ton of players I held long term after a quick pickup, including Ender Inciarte, Tommy La Stella, Gregor Blanco, and Jose Ramirez. If I hadn't picked these guys up, someone else would have.

And this isn't just a couple points. Take away 60 runs and 60 RBIs, and I lose 5 points in RBIs and TEN points in runs. Maybe it did hurt my OBP, but it can't possibly be by that much.

YR posted stats like this a couple years ago - would love to see that again.

I will look into the short-term players from 2013 and 2014 when I have the data next week. it seems that this is an interesting topic.

I still have the data from 2012 and none other than blue hen led the league in number of players with 10 or less games. he had 52. these 52 players managed:
112 games played
42 runs = .375 per game
31 RBI = .277
10 HR = .089
3 SB = .027
.267 OBP

1318 games of all his other players:
735 runs = .558
677 RBI = = .514
212 HR = .161
143 SB = .108
.363 OBP

looking at these stats, these short term players do significantly worse than the regulars, but they get some counting stats. If I remove these "bad" stats from season totals BH would have lost 5 pts, but would still have finished 3rd.

R -2
RBI -8
HR -1
SB -1
OBP +7

It would be really interesting to field a team with the best or 2nd best free agents on each day and see how such a team would do. I wouldn't rule out that such a team could win the league. if this is true there is tremendous value out there each day. you just need to identify the real good matchups or be lucky.

So 5 points in 2012. Also have to remember that other teams have guys they pick up for off days and they count too. Also, if they are good enough for that one day and are still dropped, someone else gets them. This also doesn't account for pitchers. There you take a double hit in whip and era if you aren't good and even if you are avg, it still doesn't ensure counting stat in W, S or even K.

If you are covering days with scrubs you also could hit limits early and not be able to fill that slot with your stud at the end of the year.

I'm not saying you shouldn't cover off days, but there are pitfalls. Having open slots to do it and/or dropping guys you don't want to drop is key for me. I love the strategy of these leagues where you have to make tough decisions. You win some. You lose some.

I have the first stats of the 2014 season.

blue hen leads the league in hitters that played in 10 or less games with 78. Ref and WG tie for 2nd with 41 players followed by mjd, Toral, bmd, Slizz and yr.

the 78 players from blue hen accumulate for 184 games and approximately 657 at bats, which is pretty much the number a regular player will get. so lets look at how good his 10th man did:

OBP .290
HR 13
R 79
RBI 75
SB 6

the counting stats are not that bad. I guess most of use would be happy if a slot would generate 13 HRs with 75+ R/RBI.

the manager who showed the best skill in picking short-term players was slizz. his stats:

21 players
53 games
OBP .335
HR 7
R 24
RBI 22
SB 4

good OBP, HR, R and RBI totals. HR and SB ratio per game, as well as OBP are even better than his total team numbers.

Good stuff Roman. Given the choice, I'd have made those moves again.

I found a great article about the Sixers tanking and it reminded me of Species.

The Sixers took the rules to their logical extension, and made the system's absurdity obvious. They blew up a playoff-contending team to draft someone too injured to play that season (Nerlens Noel), then followed it up the next draft with picks of Joel Embiid and Dario Saric, players who might not see the court this season. All of these moves are understandable, if not savvy. In a vacuum, none of these moves looks especially brash. But as a collection of decisions, they reveal a bold scheme, one in which being bad is as much the point as it is a natural consequence of rebuilding.

Here's hoping the Sixers have as much luck as Species looks to!

The Sixers plan has been pretty awesome. Love that they got tired of mediocrity and wised up... getting the #8 seed every year gets you nowhere. The city seems to really be behind them too cause they can actually see the vision of the plan. Compared to Amaro and the Phillies banging their head against the wall and getting nowhere with band-aids.

Hahaha GO, if you listen to 97.5's Mike Misanelli he says the same thing. Phillies fans will be accepting of it as long as it's made clear there's a plan to get them back to the World Series.

Good stuff, yr!

some G20 trivia:

1. which 2 hitters hit a home run for 4 different G20 teams in 2014?
small hint: they both play the same position
2. which players had the highest/lowest OBP in G20 in 2014? what was their OBP?
minimum requirement: 10 games played.
3. which 2 players were on the most G20 teams during the 2014 season? on how many teams were those players?
4. which 2 players hit 10 home runs in 4 consecutive seasons (2011-2014) for 4 different G20 teams?
5. which player played the most G20 games the last 4 seasons? how many games did he play?
small hint: it is almost a tie with one of his G20 team mates.

and some trivia about the 2014 pitching performances (not specific to G20):
6. which pitcher hit the most home runs?
7. did any pitcher steal a base?
8. how many pitchers recorded no out?
9. what is the highest IP total from all the pitchers with a 0.00 ERA?
10. what is the highest IP total from all the pitchers with a 0.00 WHIP?

Good stuff YR.

The answer to 7 is yes. 6. I think was Bumgarner. The rest I'd be guessing.

I don't think Nate Jones recorded an out.

I like Beltre for the multi-team questions and possibly also the most games. Also Cano for most games.

10 HR on 4 teams in 4 years - Adam Dunn? Adam LaRoche?

Lowest OBP might be Nick Franklin.

4 questions are solved:
#5 is Robinson Cano with 635 games, followed by Hunter Pence with 634 games. both a solid core of my team
#6 is Bumgarner with 4 HR's
#7 is yes, Kershaw and Joe Kelly stole a base
#8 is Nate Jones. 2 games, 4 earned runs, no outs

more hints:
#1 home runs for 4 different G20 teams
they are both catchers

#2 highest/lowest OBP
highest OBP is obvious. an injury cut his season short, otherwise he would have led MLB as well.
the G20 player with the lowest OBP barely hit over the Mendoza line, is currently starting in every game of the world series while hitting below the line

#3 players on most G20 teams
is tough to guess or even give a hint. blue hen, Ref, WG and Toral had both of these players under contract. both qualify at 3B.

#4 10 homeruns for 4 different teams in 4 seasons
both were real life team mates in 2013. both hit 10 home runs for 10 consecutive seasons (2005 - 2014)

#9 + #10 most innings with 0.00 ERA/WHIP
just guess the innings number. how high do you think it is? I guess it is lower than you think. I myself never heard of these 2 pitchers. for both of them the number of innings is their career total.

#2 is Tulowitzki and Moustakas

#1 is Welington Castillo and Jarrod Saltalamacchia

#3 is probably Freese and Dominguez. I assume more than 4 teams.

#4 might be Aramis or Soriano, but I can't think of teammates who fit the bill.

#1 no its not Castillo or Salty

#2 Moustakas (HR last night) and Tulo are correct

#3 Freese is one of them. he was on 7 different teams.

#4 another hint: in 2014 they played for Detroit and St. Louis

#3 Valbuena is the 2nd G20 journeyman
#4 are Hunter and Peralta hit 10 home runs for 4 seasons on 4 teams.

#9 + #10
most innings pitched with
- 0.00 ERA: Carson Smith, 8.1 IP (September callup)

Folks, I'm looking to deal Colin Moran to make room for prospects who don't play the same position as Joey Gallo.

There's a great ESPN article about him. Here's the good part:

The sixth overall pick of the 2013 draft by the Miami Marlins, Moran was surprisingly dealt to the Astros on July 31. The former UNC Tar Heel has the best hit tool of any player on this list, thanks in large part to his willingness to go the other way, as well as his solid pitch-recognition skills. Power is never going to be a large part of his game, though he can put the ball into the left-center field gap and will turn on fastballs to take them out to right field.

Moran is WELL behind Corey Seager and Miguel Sano on that list :)

Congratulations to Team Species - the owner of BOTH Rookies of the Year! Jose Abreu and Jacob deGrom!

So much for our informal policy of not denigrating players on other teams. That said, both Sano and Seager were on the list, so to be clear, ESPN's Keith Law was stating (not implying) that Moran has a better hit tool than either Sano or Seager. Just saying.

And since the floodgates are open, I'd like to formally welcome Jacob deGrom into the club that includes Chris Coghlan, Jason Jennings, Andrew Bailey, Bobby Crosby, and the immortal Pat Listach.

Man, I miss baseball.

LOL. Touche'.

My crack wasn't intended as a negative on Moran as much as a promotion of Seager and Sano. :) But, point taken........and I do encourage (if not insist) on the informally formal policy of not denigrating other players. But it is a fact that Seager and Sano are higher on that list.....and its not like I said Moran sucks or denigrated him in any way.

Fun fact: I almost picked up deGrom at one point just so I could have three Jakes - with Odorizzi and Arrieta. Someone with those three anchoring a staff would have done quite well in 2014.

Looks like Giancarlo Stanton is about to sign the biggest deal in MLB history.

BMD 299: Wow, seems like Pete got raped.

Judy 301: how is a trade of 4 guys 100% owned plus another guy equal to 4 guys, with the only one owned 100% on the DL.

Ref 303: I am trying to make sense out if this...but failing.

Toral 308: It would be nice to see Pete Ns rationale for the trade.

Perm Dude 309: I was just about to ask the same, Toral.

mjd 310: I want to hear Petes side too, but Im not waiting on his explanation to veto it.

Ref 311: Not sure what is going on here, but for perhaps the first time ever, I see a deal which can really upset the balance of the league with minimal (if any) impact in the future for Pete.

WG 325: I have difficulty forecasting any timeframe in which Petes team benefits from making this deal.

Nerf 336: I tried to look at the upside of Petes take in the trade and while there is more long-term potential there, it doesnt begin to cancel out the short-term gain for a team that is already very good.

Tosh 339: Pete would likely not be seeing a competitive edge to this trade until 2016.

Judy 340: I do not see Stanton as equal to 3 keepers. The guy cant stay healthy!

WG 351: All those guys that Pete is trading have a ton of current and short-term value by any metrics... He might think he is helping himself for the future but to me it seems the rest of us are getting screwed for the next 2-3 years.

Ref 353: All those guys that Pete is trading have a ton of current and short-term value by any metrics. Prince is a stud. Choo has a lifetime .386 obp and is at .441 this year. Scherzer has 250 K upside. He might think he is helping himself for the future but to me it seems the rest of us are getting screwed for the next 2-3 years.

Happy Thanksgiving G20! Hindsight is 20/20 and flags fly forever!

Out from hibernation...

BH - you should also give GO and myself credit as the ones in support of Pete's side:

Stanton - second best dynasty player
Bryant by way of Hosmer - another stud.

He traded spare change for two whole dollars. Pete wins.

On the market... Dellin Betances

With David Robertson signing with the Chicago White Sox, the New York Yankees have an opening in the ninth inning. It is currently unclear who will be the closer, but if Dellin Betances sees significant time in the role in 2015, he becomes one of the best options available to fantasy owners.

They've been talking Andrew Miller too, but I always bet against teams picking a lefty closer. And usually I'm right.

LaRoche, White Sox are perfect fit.

We all know Adam LaRoche was a big reason team Blue Hen won the title last year. Now, he goes from spacious Washington to US Cellular, perhaps the homerest ballpark in baseball. From the article:

If he stays healthy, he'll not only exceed 30 home runs, but I'll stick my neck out and say that he'll out-homer 2014 AL homer king Nelson Cruz and maybe even battle teammate Jose Abreu for the 2015 crown.

Looking to pair LaRoche with a pitcher for a top shelf hitter this offseason.
