I've been trying to find time to write something for a month now. Been very busy.
Shout out to Twilson who held 1st place throughout most of the season. If I'm not mistaken is wasn't until August 22 that my team moved into first place for good. His team had a 16 in obp, slg, era, & whip. The 13 point advantage I had in saves eventually made the difference. I wonder if the huge lead that he had during most of the season caused a lot of managers to essentially wave the white flag, thereby making it easier to pick up key free agents.
When Pollock went down before the season even started I figured I was in major trouble so I was in scramble mode from day one. Thankfully my pitching staff was steady enough that I didn't need to make many moves or devote many slots on that front. I was able to focus on getting my hitting in shape as the season went on. I picked up Eduardo Nunez and his 37 steals helped me get 12 points in that category even though he was the only guy on my team to contribute double digits in SB. This helped keep the loss of Pollock from being lethal.
I was also very fortunate with my closers. Familia was incredible, and Kimbrel/Cishek added enough saves that I was able to lead in that category even though I was only able to successfully add one closer during the season (Thornburg). Saves are a minefield and I got lucky.
1.16 Pollock, A.J. OF Bad. Didn't get a single AB from him. 2.01 Votto, Joey 1B Good. Started poorly but was red hot throughout the second half of the season. .988 ops, 101/97 and even had 8 sb. 3.16 Price, David SP Good. 228 K in 230 IP. 17 W, 3.99, 1.20 4.01 Cruz, Nelson OF Good. .915 ops, 96/105
5.16 Kimbrel, Craig RP Good. 53 ip 83K 31 sv, 3.57 1.11
6.01 Familia, Jeurys RP Good. 78 ip 84K 51 sv 2.55 1.21
7.16 Hamels, Cole SP Good. 200ip 200K 15W 3.32 1.31 8.01 Zobrist, Ben 2B Good. .819, 89/73
9.16 Story, Trevor SS Good. .933 67/70. It's a shame he got hurt. He carried my team the first month of the season and managed to avoid any terrible slumps.
10.01 Ho Park, Byung 1B Bad. I cut him after it was clear that his slump wasn't going away.
11.16 Cishek, Steve RP Good. 48ip 62K 25sv 3.40 1.07 before being stripped of his job. 12.01 Duffy, Matt 3B Bad. The 2015 magic is gone. I gave him 169 AB before letting him go. 13.16 Mesoraco, Devin C Bad. 34 AB for me before he was DL'd for the year.
14.01 Iwakuma, Hisashi SP On the fence. He had his ups and downs but was overall disappointing. 159ip 116K 12W 3.96 1.30
15.16 Paulsen, Ben OF Bad. He had a .794 OPS for in 54 AB and then COL exiled him to the minors. I guess they wanted to give the "youngster" Matt Reynolds a look.
16.01 Fiers, Mike SP Bad. I cut him after 11 IP. 17.16 Crawford, Carl OF Bad. He is not a good player anymore.
18.01 Spangenberg, Cory 2B Bad. He went down for the season very early on. 19.16 304 Naquin, Tyler OF Bad. I had to cut him early on as he wasn't getting playing time and wasn't playing well. He ended up having a good season but not for me. 20.01 Lamb, Jake 3B Good. .831 73/81 for me. Didn't finish the season strong but still had a great year. 21.16 Travis, Devon 2B Good. .803 49/43. Had to carry him on my bench a couple months but it was worth it. 22.01 Crawford, J.P. SS Bad. Wasted pick. 23.16 Ramos, Wilson C Good. .852 55/76. Great hitter throughout the season til he got hurt. He should probably become a DH or 1B and focus on hitting and staying healthy.
24.01 Iglesias, Jose SS Bad. I cut him very early on.
25.16 Hinojosa, Dalier RP PHI Bad. He had a chance to open the season as a closer but immediately imploded.
My most valuable free agents additions:
Eduardo Nunez SS/3B, His ops slipped to .730 for me as the season ground on but he did contribute 37 SB which really made the loss of Pollock less painful.
Adam Duvall OF, 74/92 .792
Cameron Maybin OF, 38/27, 9sb, .795
Gary Sanchez C, 30/36, 1.021. Is this guy for real?
Willson Contreras C, 25/25 .774
Alex Bregman SS/3b, 29/31 .931
Josh Tomlin 10W 4.23 1.18
Rich Hill 91 ip 100K 10W 1.87 0.89
Tyler Thornburg 24 ip 31K 11 sv 1.85 0.86
Thanks Guru and congrats to everyone who qualified for RIBC 2017! Looking forward to it!
