There was an effort to get a points Ottoneu league started this April but we may have waited too long to get people interested, so I am starting a thread now to let people know that I want to get a league going for 2017.
For those unfamiliar, Ottoneu is a type of dynasty keeper league run by Fangraphs. Here is a rah-rah story encouraging you to play. I have been interested for years but have never pulled the trigger.
I know that most of our leagues on this board are slow drafts, Ottoneu is an auction and a new league's auction can take 8 or more hours because each team has a 40 man roster. I think if we plan ahead and split the auction in half, conducting it over two days, we could pull it off without too much pain.
Chime in here is you are interested. |

12 teams would be needed to start this league. So far, looks like we have 8 managers, with 4 still needed.
Seattle Zen Fosten taxman Artofmonk Kyle Goatlocker Tree Wiggs
Ottoneu offers 4 different scoring formats:
- Old School - Rotisserie-style 5x5 (AVG, HR, RBI, SB, R and W, SV, ERA, WHIP, K)
- ottoneu Classic - Rotisserie-style 4x4 sabermetric-hybrid (OBP, SLG, HR, R and ERA, WHIP, HR/9, K)
- FanGraphs Points - Points based on Linear Weights
- Hitting = AB -1.0, H 5.6, 2B 2.9, 3B 5.7, HR 9.4, BB 3.0, HBP 3.0, SB 1.9, CS -2.8
- Pitching = IP 7.4, K 2.0, H -2.6, BB -3.0, HBP -3.0, HR -12.3, SV 5.0, HOLDS 4.0
- SABR Points - Like FanGraphs points, but with FIP-based pitching scoring
- Hitting = AB -1.0, H 5.6, 2B 2.9, 3B 5.7, HR 9.4, BB 3.0, HBP 3.0, SB 1.9, CS -2.8
- Pitching = IP 5.0, K 2.0, BB -3.0, HBP -3.0, HR -13.0, SV 5.0, HOLDS 4.0
Team fees for ottoneu are $9.99 and includes no prizes. To upgrade to a prize pool league ($49.99 or $99.99 entry fee), ottoneu takes a $30 cut for Tier 1 and $130 for Tier 2. IMHO, if folks wanted to make this a prize league, seems like all that could be done separately. Thoughts?

Agreed, SZ. I did SABR points last year, and Fangraphs points would be fun to try. Also, feel the same about prize pool, just happy to play.

Fosten and I have discussed co-comishing this league and I would like to hear from those of you still interested in this FanGraphs points ottoneu league.
As I mentioned in the first post, the auction will probably take around 8 hours and I think it makes the most sense to split that into two days. I am on the West Coast and I imagine that we have people in other time zones. This can make a weekday evening draft time difficult. I am able to participate in a weekday draft starting as early as 5pm. That would then entail a 8-midnight draft time for the eastern zone.
What are your ideal times for drafting? If we can only agree upon doing it over a weekend, which weekend? I imagine all of us will have some other baseball draft on one weekend or more in March, myself included. I could not draft on March 18.
So, please answer the following questions as best you can. When we come to a consensus on a draft time, we can then post the league on the ottoneu website seeking the last few league members.
What Time Zone are you in?
Pacific
On week days, when are you available to dedicate four consecutive hours to an auction?
5pm to midnight
Which weekends are you able to dedicate four consecutive hours to an auction and when?
Feb. 25-26, March 4-5, 11-12, 25-26. From 7am to midnight.

Time zone: Mountain Week day availability: 9:30pm - 12:30am with a family it hard to give up 4 straight hours. I could give 2 hour stints much easier. If we go to 2 hrs. I could do 4:30 -12:30 Weekends: still hard to give up 4 hrs. Mar. 11-12, 17-18, 24-25. The time would depend on the weekend.

wednesday evenings are the best time for me to dedicate four hours to something. Fridays during the day - as it's my one office day - are also good, because why not spend four hours on a draft when i should be working.

I am definitely interested in the league but alittle hesitant because I am not sure I can set aside enough time for the draft. That's a big chunk of time I have never done a draft like this is it something that u need to be active the whole time it is it like an auction where if u aren't there u just miss out on a particular player?

I am excited by this league. As I am looking at things, I need more details. 40 man roster with $400 budget. My understanding the $400 is for the season as well for any FA pickups. Is this correct.
If you drop a player, and the player passes through waivers, 50% of his salary, rounding up, counts against his previous team's salary cap as a cap penalty, until he is claimed by another team or until the end of the current season. Any bids for him as a free agent must be at least 50% of his previous salary.
roster-A team's starting lineup consists of one slot at each infield position (catcher, first base, second base, third base, and shortstop), five outfielder slot, one additional middle infielder (second base or shortstop) slot, one additional hitter from any position (utility slot), five starting pitcher slots, and five relief pitcher slots. NO CI position.
Just trying to read the rules and understand them. Pointing out some of the differences.

This intrigues me. It is very similar to the contract keeper league I've been running for the last 15 years, which Art is in, and a couple of other managers here have been in.
All of that being said, It's hard for me to pull the trigger on a 5th league. If you guys are still having trouble filling the last slots, say after another week, I'll do it.

arttofmonk - I had not noticed the lack of a CI, thanks for pointing that out. I have read that even though you only get 162 games played for catchers, there are two catcher slots, so you can get the stats from two backstops if they are both in your lineup and playing that night. Seriously increases your chances of getting all 162 games filled, I love that idea.
Nerf - We would love to have you. Can you make the 3/28 & 3/29 from 8pm to midnight Eastern times?

Hey folks, after reviewing the off-season arbitration options, please vote below for either Allocations or Vote Off. This annual adjustment of salaries or players, is typically between mid-October and mid-November. From the Ottoneu Rules page... d. In the interest of maintaining competitive balance, there are two distinct arbitration options.
i. Allocations a. The allocation system gives a $25 budget to each team in the league. b. The team must allocate this budget towards players on other teams. c. Each team must allocate at least one dollar to every other team, and no team can allocate more than $3 to any other team. d. At the end of the allocation period, all players have their salary increased by the amount allocated towards them. e. Allocations take place after the initial offseason salary increase, so any allocations will be in addition to the $1 or $2 increase each player gets at the end of the season. f. If a team does not allocate at least one dollar to every other team, none of their allocations will count and it will be as if they did not participate at all. g. If a team does not allocate all $25, none of their allocations will count and it will be as if they did not participate at all.
ii. Vote Off a. The vote-off system gives each team in the league the ability to vote on a player on each other team. b. The player that receives the most votes collectively on each team is turned into a restricted free agent that can be bid on by other teams during the auction draft. c. In the case of a tie, the standings of all the relevant voting teams is examined. Whichever player has the team with the worst standings voting for them is the restricted free agent. d. The team they were voted off from will get an automatic $5 discount towards that player, so if they get the player back, they will get the player for $5 under what they bid. e. Players who have been voted into restricted free agency cannot be traded. f. Players who have been voted into restriced free agency will not appear as free agents on the site.

Good morning guys. I have been preparing a bit over the weekend for this draft
Couple things I came up with Does the draft take place right through Ottoneu site? Did we decide if we will be using a corner infielder? Do we need to have a certain number of prospects? All the sites I have read suggest a number of prospects per team Do we have a list of the scoring somewhere?
Thanks so much. Really excited to do this league

Nothing like waiting until the last minute to register for a new league that requires a 8 hour auction draft.

Ok I saw that scoring but I didn't think it could be right. So there are no points for rbis or runs?

hey guys,
ottoneu still shows one open spot for the rotoguru league. would love to join, just send over the passwd.
New forum member, but long-time fantasy guru. Just had to cancel a private league and looking to move away from the traditional 5x5.

I want to confirm: Draft starts tomorrow at 8pm EDT? Is there a promotion order?

In ROFL news...- Draft takes place Tuesday (tomorrow) and Wednesday (the day after tomorrow) from 8pm EST - midnight.
- All 12 manager are now registered at ottoneu. Thanks to Nschip and Brett for posting their interest. Over the last week, another 7 people emailed asking about that last spot. I've made note of all 9 inquiries, in case we need replacements for next year. (Almost have enough for a second league!)
- Wiggs, draft is through the ottoneu site. There should be a link on the homepage tomorrow evening to access.
- All ottoneu leagues use the same roster format - A team's starting lineup consists of one slot at each infield position (catcher, first base, second base, third base, and shortstop), five outfielder slot, one additional middle infielder (second base or shortstop) slot, one additional hitter from any position (utility slot), five starting pitcher slots, and five relief pitcher slots.
- There are minor league spots in your lineup, but it has no different meaning than bench. There is a 60-day DL, which is useful only in the case of long-term injury.
- It may be a good idea for everyone to review https://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/rules and https://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/support
- Nerf, I can't recall how the nomination order works for first-year leagues. I've googled for answers, but found none. Perhaps its randomized, not sure.
This is both my and SZ's first time acting as commissioner for ottoneu, so it may take a couple minutes to get started, but things should be on autopilot from there. As always be friendly, try to show up a few minutes early, make some popcorn, and settle in for the night. Gonna be a long ride. Peace.

I have to ask about the Eaton situation. I am assuming that Taxman is taking him for the $26? Is there any way to get the $16 back for the draft? How does that even work, even if it's after the draft?
I'm still kinda miffed about it, even though I know it wasn't intentional. IN order to get the whole draft screen to show up on my old 4:3 monitor I had to zoom out, so I had trouble reading the little print next to the players when they came up.

The Eaton weirdness aside, that was a fun draft. I hit all my targets on the second day (Upton, Gausman, Murphy, Crawford), and probably had a bit more money left than I expected. We'll see how that plays out in the future.
How late did the draft go last night?

I don't know what to do about the Eaton situation, I haven't talked with Fosten about it.
The auction was great, Tuesday night was frantic, I had a difficult time keeping up. I was wrong when I thought the whole draft would take over eight hours. It took 5 hours to auction off the first 203 and less than 3 to finish up.
I took some time to come up with a plan for Weds. night and I accomplished what I wanted, it made the night much less fretful.
I want to thank everyone for participating. I've been interested in ottoneu for a few years, I am glad that we were able to get twelve active owners to commit. Best of luck to all.

Returning the $10 today is not an empty gesture, Taxman. Adam Eaton is a free agent today. You can use that $10 to bid on his services.

I admit my mistake for missing the RP (For the record, the other Eaton hasn't been in the majors since 2009, so in my mind the mistake is on Fangraphs for having all of these old players in their database). It wasn't just me either. If I hadn't bid $16, wiggs IIRC would've gotten him for $15. And if it had been the real Eaton, at that point in the draft players were going way over budget, and I'd likely have been out at over $20.
So I miss the little tag, Taxman misses the entire chat box discussion during and afterwards. It's all good. It's telling all of us to pay more attention to what's happening. :)
I'm fine with the commishes' decision, but I would suggest in the future, if Fangraphs doesn't clean up their database, that a draft gets stopped immediately if an old or 'fake' player goes up for bid.

Tax. I didn't mean to offend you in anyway with my comment. I guess I didn't see it from your side of not being able to use that 10 dollars for other guys. I apologize
Nerf. Don't think it was me who bid on eaton. I don't believe i bid on him at all.
Another possible solution. Can u just refund nerfs money for the fake eaton?
Fangraphs really needs to update the player pool. They charge 120 bucks per league and still have guys like old Adam eaton gary Sheffield vlad Guerrero among others. That is ridiculous for a site that charges that kind of money

I'm hoping that my lead isn't just a reflection that I have had the most innings pitched. Losing my favorite player in Freddie Freeman is upsetting. I knew he was due for a huge year, now do I cut him and get some money back or do I believe that he is a keeper at $38?

I think for this league there is a balance between quality and quantity. You can't have great players and no backups and be way behind in IP and GP, meanwhile you also can't go way over on IP and start too many mediocre pitchers. I was starting everyone in April and quickly went way over projection on IP, so I cut back to 5 SP for May, and I'm still over. 1500 IP is not a hard number to reach with all the bench slots we have.
Right now I'm a bit behind in GP, because my entire bench has been on the DL most of the season. Santana getting OF elig. is huge because now I can play him, Reynolds, and Bour at the same time.

I think so far my overall impression of Ottoneu is good. My only issue is with acquiring FA's. The blind-bidding is good for long-term speculation picks, but not so good for acquiring instant replacements. If you lose you have to start over, and there is no recourse. This is especially difficult in circumstances where you simply need players because of loss of active players (injuries or demotions). At least in football when there is blind bidding there is an open FA acquisition period as well, so if you don't win your bids you can at least get warm bodies in the lineup.
I'd hate to be the team in the lead that suddenly loses, say, two RP's in a span of a couple of days (that's happened to me twice this year). Everyone knows that happened to you and could easily keep you from acquiring RP's for a good long time, at least a week.
It is what it is, of course. We can't change the settings. I'd prefer it to be open bidding. At least then we'd know we've been out-bid and can try someone else.

Sorry about the tardy congratulations, but great job Mudville 9. Looking at your roster, you didn't have the best auction, but it looks like you had the best in season management. And the monster points you left on your bench on May 1 didn't haunt you!
I enjoyed our first year, though if the amount of time and effort being a commissioner the first week of the league continued for the entire season... ;)
Hopefully I will take the lessons I learned and apply them to next season. Did we even have a single trade this year? Maybe this offseason we will be throwing players around like a Turkish bazaar.
I also hope that everyone will be back. There were a few squads that we not very active the second half of the season. If anyone wants out, speak up now so we can offer your squad to another gurupie.

Echoing the belated congratulations to Mudville. This is a challenging game and your persistence to the math payed off. Stupendous! Echoing the reminder that Allocations are due November 14. I've sent an email to the 5 teams who have not spent their budget. Echoing the roll call for 2018. The next deadline on the calendar is January 31 to declare keepers. If anyone is not returning, it'd be helpful to have a new manager in place before the end of the year. Thanks to all.

Ditto on the belated congrats. Plan right now is to be back. I do need to look at the calendar and try to sort through a few things. Not sure when in August we will be getting back from Europe, so that could have an impact. Wasn't quite as hands on as I needed to be, and hope to fix that. Did enjoy the league, but had a hard time sorting through some of it.

As you can tell, I am eager for baseball to start! Pitchers and catchers report February 12th. Season opens March 29th (4 days earlier than last year). Since many of us participate in multiple leagues, I’d like to draft ROFL before RIBC and G20 get going, usually somewhere around March 12-13. Once keepers are declared January 31st, the player pool is set and ready to go. I have another ottoneu draft on February 18th, so was looking at either February 25th or March 4th. Thoughts?

I'm not even mildly interested in a Feb. draft. I would estimate this year's draft wrapping up in three to four hours, we can all agree upon setting aside that much time on a March day, I trust.
The real question is who will end up with Adam Eaton this year :)
