Commissioner:
"Species" gmrobinson1@yahoo.com - "Tosh" lodnar@gmail.com - "Guru" (Treasurer) davehall@rotoguru2.com

Positions
C - 1 1B - 1 2B - 1 3B - 1 SS - 1 OF - 3 DH - 1 P - 6
Active - 15; Bench - 8; Total - 23; Must have active players on roster at each position

Returning Managers
As commissioners, we reserve the right NOT to extend an invitation to (or remove) any manager for any reason. Primary reason for being excluded would be abusive behavior, purposeful rules violations (ie colluding on a trade), inactivity (ie leaving injured/OUT players in as starters or not actively trying to improve your team), not participating in league business or repeated delays/unresponsive, or failure to pay your share of league fees. If an owner is removed or NOT invited back, a new owner will be recruited to take over the vacated team in its exact state. All monies will be forfeited.

Trade Policy
If there are 7 votes against the trade it will be sent to the commishs to be vetoed. There will be a min. of one full day to vote before the trade will be approved if the max objections are not reached. Everyone will be emailed by ESPN automatically as soon as the trade is accepted so they may review it. Make sure your email notifications are set up! Please check the site daily.

Trades involving draft picks/prospects will be listed in the trade and can also be posted on our leagues bulletin board and/or our thread at rotoguru.com. Note that off-season and pre-season (before draft is complete) trades will still be approved by the commishs.

Trades for draft picks - be they Supplemental or Prospect picks - may only be consummated within two drafts from the date of the trade. Example: in March 2015 before the Supplemental Draft, one can only trade either 2015 or 2016 picks. In June 2015, one could trade either 2016 or 2017 picks, etc.

Trade deadline - the trade deadline is the last day in August available in the ESPN website.

Minimums for GP and IP:

A team must accumulate a minimum of 1375 GP by hitters over the course of a season. For each 15 games of shortfall, a team is assigned one demerit. Demerits will be integer values only. Thus, a team with 1-15 games of shortfall will receive one demerit, 16-30 will receive 2 demerits, etc.

A team must accumulate a minimum of 1200 IP over the course of a season. For every shortfall of 15 IP, a team is assigned one demerit. Demerits will be integer values only. Thus, a team with 1-15 IP of shortfall will receive one demerit, 16-30 will receive 2 demerits, etc.

GP and IP demerits will be combined for each team. However, the first two demerits will be forgiven.

If a team finishes “in the money” for prize pool purposes (ranked 1-6), then demerits will be ignored.

For lottery teams, the following penalties will be applied to every pick in the next year’s supplement draft:

If a team accumulates more than 10 demerits, then it will be removed from the lottery and assigned the 14th pick in all rounds (i.e., behind all lottery teams, but ahead of any prize pool teams.)

For teams with less than 10 demerits, that team is pushed forward one place in the supplemental draft rankings for each demerit. For example, if a team finishes in last place (20th) and has 5 demerits, then that team will be treated in the draft rankings as though it finished in 15th place (and the teams actually finishing in places 16-20 will each move down one place.)

If more than one lottery team has a demerit, then the lottery rankings will be successively applied starting with the worst finisher and then moving up to the next worst finisher, etc.

Keepers
There will be 9 players available to be kept heading into the season. You will have a deadline to post your keepers. You may change your keepers up until the deadline.

Players drafted in the Rule 4 draft the previous June are not eligible to be kept as keepers. This rule applies even if that player has played in the major leagues. All Rule 4 draftees must go through at least one Prospect Draft prior to being eligible as keepers.

2017 Prize Pool
There are 19 of 20 people in the prize pool @ $15 each. That means there is $285 to distribute. Teams are required to always be in it or out of it once they committed to it in 2005. These will be the payouts: 1st $110; 2nd 65; 3rd 45; 4th 30; 5th 20; 6th 15. If a non-participant places 1st-6th, his money will be reallocated so there is always a 100% payout. 1st-5th place will be moved up a spot in the prize money and the 6th place $15 will go to the treasury to help defray dues costs to all. Dues are used to pay for the league champion trophy and draft.

Supplemental and Prospect Draft Lotteries:
The lotteries for both the Supplemental and Prospect Drafts will be conducted within 30 days of the end of the previous season.

Timing of the Keeper Deadline, Prospect Draft and Supplemental Draft
Each March, as proposed by a Commissioner, the league hold the following events, in this order:

1) Keeper Deadline: all teams must designate their keepers. They may designate up to 9.
NOTE: At this time, once the Keeper Deadline has passed, managers may also call up prospects to their active roster. In this scenario, those prospects are separate from their 9 keepers.
ADDITIONALLY: Once the keeper deadline has passed, managers may exceed 9 or more players by trade.
2) Prospect Keeper Deadline: Managers designate their Prospect Keepers. They may designate up to 3.
3) Prospect draft picks are assigned and the Prospect Draft is commenced per our rules below.
4) The Supplemental Draft is completed.

Supplemental Draft, FA Pickups and Waivers
The Draft will be held prior to every season after Keepers are announced. A "NBA style" lottery will determine the top three selections. The lottery for the following season will be completed within 30 days of the end of regular season. Picks 4 - 20 and all picks in subsequent rounds will be in inverse order of previous years finish and will not snake.

Players must be available in the ESPN player pool to be drafted or added during the season via FA or WW. No amateur player may be drafted or picked up via FA or WW if the player in question still has amateur status or is a prospect. Also, if a player is drafted in the June MLB draft, while he may be freely picked up and used on a roster, please note that per our keeper rules they may not be kept the following season. All Rule 4 draftees must go through one Prospect Draft before they become keeper eligible.

There is a 3 hour per draft pick time limit and a cumulative time limit of 12 hours. (Subject to change). You may not exceed 23 players. You may not drop a player (or add a non-drafted player if you are short) until waivers have been turned on. You may trade for extra picks and you may trade your excess picks as long as it is done before the preceeding pick has been made. If you make a duplicate pick, the draft will continue and you may correct that pick at any time. Once you have been skipped, you will continue to be skipped until you are caught up. If a clock runs out, the next person on the clock will be charged for any time before his pick. If you are skipped due to a pick or c clock, you may still post your selection at any time.

Waivers will begin the season in the same order as the supplemental draft. Lottery picks and traded draft picks will not be considered when determining the waiver order.

Prospect Rules:
The underlined key deadlines and procedures are completed in a linear fashion, one after the other.

Keeper Deadline:
At a time announced by the Commissioner, all managers must have no more than 3 keepers on their prospect list. This is the only point in time where teams must have 3 or fewer prospects.

Managers will announce what prospects they intend to keep on the prospect list, which prospects they are releasing, and (if applicable) which prospects they are calling up and releasing (see below).

All hitters must have less than 300 ABs and pitchers less than 110 IP or 40 GP to remain a prospect. Otherwise, they must be moved to your active roster or released. Managers must monitor their own prospects. If they are later to have found to be over the max. at that deadline, the player will be immediately removed as a prospect and put on waivers.

Owning another team's prospect pick has no bearing on the above.

Assignment of Prospect Picks:
After declaration of kept, released or called up prospects, Managers are assigned new prospect picks dependent upon how many prospects they kept - with the total sum of kept prospects and new picks of your own limited to a total of 3. Specifically:

- If you keep 3 prospects, you receive no new picks
- If you keep 2 prospects, you receive your 1st round prospect pick
- If you keep 1 prospect, you receive your 1st and 2nd round prospect picks
- If you keep no prospects, you receive your 1st, 2nd and 3rd round prospect picks

If an owner has traded away one of their prospect picks, they must reduce their kept prospects below three in order to comply with the terms of their trade. See "if you have traded away a pick", below.

Owning another team's prospect pick has no bearing on the above.

End of Keeper Deadline Activity:
Upon the completion of the keeper deadline and the assignment of picks, managers may then exceed three prospects by trade.

Processing of Traded Prospect Picks:
After the assignment of picks, the league will officially process all traded picks:
If you have traded away a pick: As noted above, any team that has traded away a pick must comply with the terms of their trade. This means that the number of prospects you are allowed to keep is reduced by the number of prospect picks you have traded away. As with any trade, if an owner trades away a pick in a round that they do not own, the receiving party receives a pick of a higher round to satisfy their trade.
If you have traded for a pick: Acquired picks are only used as picks in the Prospect Draft. The owning of another team's pick in no way alters the number of prospect keepers you may have, nor does it effect the assignment of your own prospect picks.

Prospect Draft:
The Prospect Draft will be held during the preseason after keepers are finalized (but before the Supplemental Draft). Drafts will be in inverse order of the final standings of the previous year and will not snake. A "NBA style" lottery will determine the top three selections. The lottery for the following season will be completed within 30 days of the end of regular season. Picks 4 - 20 and all picks in subsequent rounds will be in inverse order and will not snake. Players will be selected on our thread at rotoguru.com if possible. If that site is down, our draft will continue on the bulletin board of our page if we have knowledge of all picks selected previously. Ties will be broken by a dice roll. There will be up to 3 rounds.

A draft-eligible prospect is defined as a hitter that has less than 150 Major League at bats or a pitcher with less than both 55 Major League innings pitched and 20 Major League games pitched. Further, to be eligible, the player must be a professional baseball player, defined as one of the following:

- Under contract with a MLB teams system. This does not require them to have been assigned to a minor league team at the time of the draft.
- A professional player playing in/having played in Japans Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league.
- A professional player playing in/having played in Koreas Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) league.
- A professional player playing in/having played in Cuba's top professional league, the Serie Nacional.

Amateur players in High School, College or otherwise subject to the Rule 4 draft are not eligible.

There will be a 3 hour per pick clock and a 4 hour cumulative clock to draft. If you are skipped, you may make your selection at any time. Time will not accrue from midnight to 8 am ET, though anyone may select during that time if their pick is up. Once the draft concludes, the only way to add a prospect is via trade or future drafts. After the draft, you may bring this player on your active roster at any time (as long as hes in the ESPN database) by dropping a player.

Prospect callup rules: Managers may call-up and then send down their prospect up to two times without losing their rights as a prospect as long as that player has not hit the maximum ABs/IP/GP threshold. Once a commish allows the call-up, he will add the number of times that player has been called-up next to his name in the Prospect List below. At the end of the season, all prospects on the roster will be considered optioned so they wont have to be counted as a keeper so long as they have not hit their threshold. Before a commish will option or send-down a prospect, he will look at the stats for that player including games played that day if the lineup freeze has passed. If a prospect is renounced or hits his threshold while on your roster (called up), his name will be removed from your prospect list.

Welcome everyone to the 2017 Gurupie 20 Regular Season!! The contenders have emptied their wallets, the rebuilders have foundations that would make any homebuilder jealous, and we are ready to go for the season (thank gawd!).

If you haven't checked your roster for errors, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Hopefully I also correctly tallied all of the trades. We have our threads as a backup, as I have missed or improperly entered trades in the Constitution in the past. Please double check.

Good luck to all! May your starters stay healthy, your closers keep their jobs and you meet the GP and IP limits! ;)

I need baseball to start now. One daughter is home all week under concussion protocol for a fall at school.

My oldest daughter went thru a lockdown at school yesterday (not a drill) when a gun and a knife were found in a students bag. My car battery died this morning and then after it got jumped it wouldn't throttle. So after getting towed to a service station I had to wait 3 hours only to find out parts need ordered and its in over night. But that's ok. Sunday night we get baseball back! I'm ready.

Apparently I really don't want my 2018 11th round pick since I've already traded it 3 separate times. Twice to Species.

Whoops! Also put this in the wrong forum...I have a habit of doing these types of things.

Ahh yes...spring is in the air, which means its G20 Time! This is one league I can always get excited about. Extremely talented, engaged owners who know their stuff. As I put the painful finish to 2016 behind me, it taught me many lessons. This diary is getting harder to write given my time constraints with chasing after two little girls...nevertheless, enjoy!

OFFSEASON DEALING

I found myself needing to shed my excess fat before keepers were declared, and was able to find landing spots for 4 of my keeper-quality leftovers:

-Kelvin Herrera, RP, KC for a 2nd and 6th rd pick swap: WG gets a tier 2 closer, with tier 1 upside, I get a 2nd rd pick. What is funny about this is that WG basically traded his 2nd round pick in exchange for the rights to Nunez, Herrera, and a 6th round pick if you look at it from a net standpoint.'

-Seung-hwan "The final Boss" Oh, RP, STL to Guru for 4.18: I admit, I definitely sold Oh at an extreme discount. Oh is an elite closer...good for Guru. The market for closers is generally a 3, but I didn't want to overplay my hand either. Sure, I could've potentially extracted more for him, but I had other deals to make and I didn't want to drag it out to the deadline. Early bird gets the worm.

-Domingo Santana, OF, MIL to GO for 4.08: I don't get why the market all of the sudden got hot for Domingo after I traded him. Good for GO. He should be kept with an on base % north of .340 and the power upside he possesses. In Milwaukee. Should make for a great fantasy starter. Really happy for GO that he made this move.

-Robbie Ray to MJD for his 2018 S-Draft 3rd: MJD gets a high upside keeper who strikes out a ton of hitters. I get a 3rd round pick in my pocket that I could use if I find myself a buyer.

-Anderson Espinoza from Nerfherders for pick 3.19.

KEEPERS

1B - Eric Hosmer, KC
3B - Nolan Arenado, COL
SS - Carlos Correa, HOU
OF - Gregory Polanco, PIT
OF - Byron Buxton, MIN
UT - Anthony Rendon, 3B, WSH
SP - Stephen Strasburg, WSH
SP - Sean Manaea, OAK
RP - Wade Davis, CHC

The last keeper spot came down to two players:

Sean Manaea and Robbie Ray. I spent a great deal researching the two and came to the conclusion that both are pretty awesome.

-Sean Manaea: Had the biggest 1H-2H GB% jump in the MLB. Pair it with more swinging K's and fewer balls. Post ASB ERA 2.67 over 77 IP with an elite level K/9.

-Robbie Ray: One of the best K/9 ratios in baseball (12 K/9) Ratio backed by a 13% SwK% and Ground Ball % jumped by 10% during the last month.

The x-factor to me was o.co coliseum or whatever its called these days. I figure he will have a better chance of keeping his ratios low whereas Ray might strike a ton of batters out, but still pitches in Arizona and has a career WHIP north of 1.3.

POST-KEEPER THOUGHT

Seeing how the Tosh / BH trade fell through, I agree with an assertion Bean made last season:

Just make the deadlines at the same time.

I get the intention to the 24 hour delay: It allows competing teams to trade one of their prospects in exchange for an extra keeper, while also getting their prospect pick back from the player that departs in the upcoming draft. My question is as follows: How does this help the league?

The rebuilding teams lose a keeper, and lose a pick in the upcoming p-draft to make room for the prospect they acquire. To me, it only helps those competing...which isn't good for the entire league.

I would even move towards a proposal to make it effective 2018 to close this loophole.

PROSPECT DRAFT

As the draft deadline was nearing and I began to input players into the database, I realized Nerfherders had a top 4 pick and 3 top prospects (Bellinger #6 - Law and Frazier #27 - Law and Anderson Espinoza). Honestly? It's something I should've realized when trading Madison Bumgarner for Buxton / Ray last year.

That said, it was pretty clear that Bellinger and Frazier (two top 20 prospects) are going to be kept and, if he wanted Pick #4, Nerf needed to 10th keep one of those 3. I shot Nerf an email and he was open to it. At the time, I really didn't know much about Espinoza other than that he has a high 90's fastball, is 19, and has Pedro Martinez like upside. Furthermore, I get a universal top 40 prospect who would go in the 1st round had he been available. Nerf picks up some extra s-draft capital and retains that #4 pick in a deep draft. Win / win all-around.

The prospect draft is what I enjoy the most about G20. Everybody is just about on equal playing field attempting to unearth the next superstar keeper. I changed my strategy up by splitting my pitching and hitting prospects rather than lump them together like last year. I figured I was going to take a positional player given that I had Espinoza in fold.

Positional
Ronald Acuna (1.13 - Me)
Kevin Maitan (1.02 - MJD) - The ultimate package to dream on. Could be the next Miguel Cabrera.
Nick Senzel (1.04 - Meatwads) - The consensus #1 prospect available.
Vlad Guerrero, Jr. (1.03 - bmd) - Another bat to dream on. 17 and already showing potential to be the next star MLB bat
Kyle Tucker (1.10 - Thumqer) - Next Hunter Pence?
Lazaro "Lazarito" Armenteros (Not Drafted) - Thought long and hard about him...but ultimately went Ray.
Corey Ray (1.19 - Me)
Mickey Moniak (1.01 - Judy) - Think Christian Yelich, but with more power.
Zach Collins (1.06 - BH) - I called this one from the beginning. Power Bat? Check. Gets on base? Check. Sign BH up.
Willy Adames (1.09 - Meatwads) - Just an all around good player. Centerpiece from the David Price trade
Ian Happ (1.14 - MJD) - Was my "fallback" pick at 19.
Isan Diaz (2.05 - Tree) - Good upside play. Gets on base and has 20+ HR power.
Chance Sisco (2.13 - Tree) - Wasn't on my radar until I read John Sickel's review of him calling him an "on base machine".
Alex Verdugo (2.02 - Judy) - Fine player. Thought he could ascend more amongst the rankings than he actually did and was hoping to trade like Species did with Brinson.
Yusniel Diaz (Undrafted) - 8 figure bonus given by the Dodgers back in 2015. Thought he could be a good upside play.

**Blake Rutherford (1.16 - BH) - No revisionist history here. I flat out slept on him and didn't re-read Keith Law who has him #22. BP had him below where I even looked, so I moved along...I was so obsessed with getting Acuna that I honestly ignored him.

Pitching
Jason Groome (1.17 - Thumqer) - Will write more below
Yadier Alvarez (1.12 - Pete N.) - Was surprised how far he fell...one day he might be taken before Kershaw in redrafts.
Cal Quantrill (Undrafted) - my boy.
Sandy Alcantara (Undrafted) - 100mph fastball. More of a project, but if he can harness it...there is upside of a SP1. Floor is that of a 2015/16 Archie Bradley though (aka trash).
Brent Honeywell (2.07 - Bean) - BP top 25 prospect. Excellent Command. Boring, but will be a solid pro.
Michael Kopech (1.08 - Tree) - As a Sox fan, I want to see him succeed. I question his secondary offerings and see him more as an elite closer (I know I'm in the minority).
AJ Puk (2.12 - MJD) - Was in contention for the top pick in the rule 4 draft. Pitches in Oakland.
Adrian Morejon (Mr. Irrelevant Prospect Pick 3.02 - BH) - Big bonus out of Cuba. Pitches in San Diego. Lots to dream on.

The Prospect Draft
You did not read incorrectly. Acuna was the #1 rated player on my board. Only a handful of prospects (already owned) I would select over him...the trade to get Acuna is what I'll elaborate on.

Once Blue Hen acquired pick 1.16 (Devers Trade), I got nervous that he might be in the market for Acuna as well. The last thing I wanted was to see his monthly updates about Acuna's progress in the minors (like Devers) and I did nothing to get the guy I coveted so highly.

I sent messages to MJD, Pete (ttucowboy), and lastly, Meatwads, looking to move up in the draft. Pete was ecstatic that Yadier Alvarez was potentially, and unexpectedly, available so told me that he wasn't trading the pick should Alvarez fall. MJD was open to it, but wanted to see who would be available when he was on the clock before considering it. I then sent Meatwads a message seeing what he thought about trading his pick. Meatwads was very excited that Yadier Alvarez could, also, be available to him.

When Pete selected Alvarez, Meatwads was sent back to the drawing board. It dawned on me that I had Espinoza and figured it was worth a shot to offer Espinoza for the selection outright. He thought about it for fifteen minutes and said yes. It wasn't my intention to trade Espinoza, but if it got me Acuna, I could live with the net loss of player I would take at 19 (targeting Groome or Quantrill).

Turns out, all that panic was for naught. Blue Hen was going Rutherford all the way. Good chance Acuna would've fallen to me anyhow...good for Meatwads as well securing a fangraphs favorite. Hopefully I don't end up with an egg on my face

39.13 - Ronald Acuna, OF, ATL
As Thumqer said to me after I drafted him "Acuna Matata!" The best way to describe him is Victor Robles...but with about 10-15 more HR / year. My type of prospect.

As Baseball Prospectus said "Acuna is a full season being all over the prospect map, and it would've happened in 2016 if not for a torn thumb ligament that required surgery...he shows that should serve him well in the future...He doesn't look the part of a prodigious home-run hitter, but there's plus power in the profile due to an explosive swing. He has an advanced approach at the play with good tracking and pitch recognition skills, and he's a plus runner with a decent chance to stick in center. He's still a long way away from the majors...but if the whole package comes together, there's all-star potential there. You might just have to wait until the 2020's to see him in the Midsummer classic."

From Keith Law: He does have the ceiling of an elite player -- a .300/.375 AVG/OB% guy with 15-plus homers and plus-plus defense in center, which could make him a top 10 or 15 player in the league..."

Maybe I'm reading too much into it...but the more I read on him, the more excited that I am to have him on my squad.

***UPDATE*** The other day he hit three (3) "no doubt" Homeruns in consecutive at bats!!!

39.19 - Corey Ray, OF, MIL
I really wanted Ian Happ at this pick due to my gap at 2B. Happ is a higher floor prospect than a high ceiling. Happ is a pretty safe bet to be a 10th keeper in 2018 as well...

My fallback for Ian Happ was Jason Groome...when Thumqer went with Groome at 17, I was disappointed...especially after BH was going with Rutherford all along. I gave up Espinoza for Acuna (who I am smitten with), but now am left with another OF rather than a SP.

I know Quantrill was listed high up there...but what scares me is the Stanford factor. Appel was a consensus top pick, went to Stanford instead of the MLB, and Stanford screwed him up...just like they did with another top prospect and former slizz farmhand, Austin Wilson. I am hesitant to invest in Quantrill this year until I see how he develops and un-f's whatever the Stanford coaches put into his head.

I went back to the board at Baseball Prospectus and Dynasty Guru and took the highest rated player left...Corey Ray (#187 in DG Top 500 and #2 BP Fantasy Player from the 2016 Rule 4 draft):

Don’t let a disappointing pro debut stand in the way of nabbing Ray with a high pick; he still possesses some of the best athleticism available and it has the potential to show up with 15-20 home run power and enough speed to steal 30-plus bags. If that sounds like a potentially exciting fantasy player, it’s because it is.

Hopefully he takes off in the rankings...I'm not married to him, so if you are interested let me know!

***UPDATE*** As I am typing my diary of Robert Gsellman, that should've been my pick. It would've allowed me to get Eduardo Rodriguez while simultaneously calling up Gsellman. I just didn't have him listed in my pitching prospects much like I didn't have Rutherford for whatever reason. Oh well.

Supplemental Draft

G20 has a 1400 inning limit...or as I like to call the draft, "the road to 1400". I knew I needed to hit pitching early and often as I no longer have Jose Fernandez anchoring down my staff. My goal is usually 1250 projected IP as I figure to stream or pickup a starter along the way. At the beginning of the draft, I don't even have 400 innings:

-Stephen Strasburg, 150 IP
-Sean Manaea, 170 IP
-Wade Davis, 50 IP

I knew I needed to go SP with the first pick. I had a pre-draft deal ironed out with WG to trade from 1.19 to 1.16 should Rich Hill been available for selection. I had a feeling Guru might be eyeing him up, so this was a way to secure his rights. Texas Pete played some hold-em and made a deal nobody expected...so much for that. My focus then turned to one other name: John Lackey.

1.19 - John Lackey, SP, CHC
Old Slizz would've taken Dylan Bundy with this selection. I learned my lesson in 2016 the hard way -- I ultimately gave up a championship with aggressive selections rather than conservative selections (Patrick Corbin and Jimmy Nelson)...I wanted to do the same thing here by going with two "breakout" candidates like Bundy an Daniel Norris to start this draft.

In 2016, I already had the "big 3" of MadBum, JoFer, and Stras...there was no need to be aggressive when I should've turned my focus to inning eaters like Lackey while allowing my big dogs to eat. Despite the constant 5 ER stink-bombs from Corbin and Nelson, I was still dominating SP early on. That good fortune did not last all season, and in August-September, I had an implosion like no other where my aces collectively took a dump. There was no consistency to fall back on. Had I made high floor, conservative, selections...there is a good chance I would have been picking 1.20 versus 1.19.

Lackey has been Mr. Consistency since coming back from Tommy John. His fastball is consistently 93-95 and plays on the best regular season team in baseball. His ratios were fine last year, but was a tad unlucky with respect to the W column (Only 11). I'm hoping that rebounds and he can give me 180+, low risk, IP with the same line (more wins, of course :P) as 2016:

3.35 ERA / 1.06 WHIP / 180k / 15+ W?

If Lackey does that, I will have approximately 550 IP logged. I figured I would get one of Bundy or Norris with my next selection to compliment Lackey's 180 IP.

2.16 - Matt Moore, SP, SF
I thought there was a good chance that Dylan Bundy would be selected by the time I picked...so I "moved on" with my expectation of getting Bundy and turned my focus on getting Norris.

Set a 3-man queue of:

Dylan Bundy
Daniel Norris
Eduardo Rodriguez

Like I stated above, I fully expected Bundy to get selected...Great One up at 2.08: Norris, Daniel P DET. Everyone knows that feeling of disappointment when they see a player they wanted, and expected, to get selected just before you had a shot. That was me when I saw Norris get taken by GO. I get this is a keeper league, so young arms are at a premium...Bravo, GO. Congratulations and enjoy Norris.

I worked nightshift the entire draft, so when I got home around 7AM, Jim Johnson was the last selection at 2.09. I thought for a second prior to going to bed...wow, I might actually get Dylan Bundy. Since I didn't turn my phone on silent, I began to get texts that I am on the clock around noon...I pick up my phone, immediately go to draftime and see that Fosten has broken my heart, taking Bundy at 14...two selections before me! I should've expected it as it seemed too good to be true...so I sent Fosten a message and moved on.

Now, I was left wondering if I should choose E-Rod here. I selected E-Rod from the drop down menu, but couldn't bring myself to hit "make draft selection" just yet. I tell Species my pick is likely E-Rod, but to give me some time to make sure he has spot in the rotation.

I came across an article which painted the picture in a favorable light for E-Rod:

The David Price injury may buy Pomeranz some time at the beginning of the year, but with Chris Sale in the mix, somebody will have to go, and provided Steven Wright is healthy, it’ll come down to Pomeranz and Eduardo Rodriguez, an up-and-coming 23-year-old who ended last year with a 3.30 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings in 11 starts while Pomeranz was stinking up the joint.

Nice! Right above that was a link to "Breakouts 2.0".

Breakouts 2.0 welcomes Jose Peraza from sleepers list, brings Dylan Bundy, Joc Pederson into fold

I still had cold feet with respect to Eduardo Rodriguez, so figured I might as well take a look since I pick at 2.19 as well. First name up there is Matt Moore. I always liked Matt Moore when he was in Tampa, but his loss of velocity was the big reason why he struggled when he came back from Tommy John. With the best catcher in the game, Buster Posey, calling the shots, the world saw what he is capable of doing when he shut down the Cubs in the NLDS. Combined with the fact that he is a "breakout candidate", I figured I might as well roll the dice here.

I'm confident that Moore will give me 180+ IP, elite ratios due to the SF bump and Posey.

A couple days later, the following article came out, which affirmed my selection:

Giant Expectations

Furthermore, his velocity is up from 92.3 MPH (last spring) to 94.6 MPH (this spring).

2.19 - Robert Gsellman, SP, NYM
I couldn't believe that I was passing on Eduardo Rodriguez with this pick. While I waited an hour to select, I did my normal readings and brought up the Dynasty Guru 500:

203 - Gsellman
290 - E-Rod

I then went to Razzball:

70 - Gsellman
92 - E-Rod

Then, I came across this blurb on ESPN:

The Mets got more phone calls from GMs asking about the availability of Gsellman than about any other player this offseason, but they correctly and quietly rejected all of the inquiries. Gsellman has had a strong spring to back up his strong finish with the Mets last September.

Gsellman’s four-pitch mix is strong, and his competitiveness and strike-throwing ability make him a strong bet to be the real thing. The Mets’ rotation is deep and strong, and he has had a lot of competition with pitchers such as Seth Lugo and Zack Wheeler, but there is no doubt in my mind that somehow he ends up with 30 starts and an ERA in the 3.00s if he stays healthy. I’m a believer.

3 picks in, the road to 1400 is as follows:

-Stephen Strasburg, 150 IP
-Sean Manaea, 170 IP
-John Lackey, 180 IP
-Matt Moore, 180 IP
-Robert Gsellman, 170 IP
-Wade Davis, 50 IP

900 IP...2/3rds of the way done!

With a rotation spot not guaranteed in Boston, this felt like the safer selection. GO - could you please give us your insight on E-Rod??

If I could get a mulligan, I would've prospected Gsellman at 1.19, taken E-Rod here, and got Solarte at my next pick.

4.08 - Yangervis Solarte, 2B/3B, SD
Eduardo Rodriguez was still there. I was going to go E-Rod with this selection and look to take one of Drury or Solarte at 18...go figure, Tree HAD to take Brandon Drury right before me. I desperately needed a 2B who was going to start all season. Solarte does not have 2B eligibility yet, but it appears that Bud Black is going to let 3rd base come down to Schimpf vs Sapenberg and start Solarte at the keystone.

As per Draftime, Drury has an ADP of 205 while Solarte has an ADP of 208. As much as I wanted to get E-Rod on my team, the more pressing need was to secure my starting 2B for the season. Solarte was the last of my "targets":

-Travis (own in RIBC)
-Drury (3B/OF, will be 2B/3B/OF after 10 games) - that multi-position eligibility plus upside makes for an intriguing play.
-Solarte (3B, will be 2B after 10 games)

If I did not get Solarte, I would be left going with a patchwork 2B (Joe Panik) for the entire year. Filling 2B was a bigger priority than another 150 IP. Solarte is slated to bat in the 3 or 4 hole for San Diego...therefore he should get some nice RBI opportunities while possibly scoring some runs. Using 2016's stats projected over 600 AB, his line would look as follows:

.340 OB% / 81 R / 22 HR / 105 RBI

He does that, we're talking keeper at 2B.

4.18 - Addison Reed, RP, NYM
Honestly? This is the only pick I really dislike. I went with Reed for the guaranteed saves while Familia is out for what I thought would be one month (just found out today - 15 games). Reed's ratios have been great, but I definitely whiffed here in terms of extracting max value.

I really wanted Matt Bush and somehow managed to get 0 shares of him anywhere. He is the best closer in Texas and like Fosten mentioned in his RIBC analysis, I fully expect Dyson (#1 pitch to contact closer in MLB) to lose his job by June to Bush.

5.19 - Kyle Barraclough, RP, MIA
when compiling my list of RP targets, I identified 3 priorty arms:

1) Barraclough
2) Hand
3) Bush

Barraclough is one of eight relievers with 100+ strikeouts in 2016. He just turned 26 and is now entering his prime. With Capps gone, he is only blocked by Ramos...Should Ramos falter, it would be a huge coup for my squad.

Using 2016 as a benchmark, Barraclough is roughly 40 strikeouts more than actual innings pitched. Using the formula of 40 strikeouts times 9 innings, I have now created a surplus of 360 innings (i.e. 2 starters). In other words, it would take 360 innings of starting pitching (i.e. Lackey & Moore) and add 1.0 to their K/9.

8.19 - Brad Hand, RP, SD
Some of you are probably like - Brad Hand?!?! WTF?

He was un-drafted in a ton of leagues, but I didn't want to risk it here. In the 2nd half of 2016, it "clicked" for Brad Hand. The K/9 rose to 11.5 accompanied by an ERA of 2.70 and a 0.93 WHIP. Why? He began to throw his slider for more consistency:

The Closest Thing to Andrew Miller's Slider

He was even better in Sept/Oct (albeit small sample size of 18 IP, the K/9 rose to 13). So far, his spring velocity is up 1.0mph versus 2016's...I can only hope that his spin rate is accompanied by it. If so, I will have possibly secured Andrew Miller Lite in the 8th round.

On the road to 1400, I am now up to 1090 IP (50 Reed, 70 Barraclough, 70 Hand)

9.05 - Charlie Morton, SP, HOU
Morton wasn't even on my radar coming into the draft. Articles were coming in a couple days before I picked, but I didn't want to tip my hand in RIBC. Seemingly out of nowhere, Morton's velocity has increased by 5mph. More velocity = good for fantasy:

Morton's fastball topped out at 97 mph during Saturday's game against the Nationals, Philip Fishman of the Houston Chronicle reports. The right-hander got up to 63 pitches (42 strikes) in his fourth spring start, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out seven over four innings.
Morton is unfazed by the velocity increase of his fastball, which in previous years sat in the 92 mph range. "It's nice to throw hard, but at the end of the day, it's all about getting outs," he said. And getting outs is what's he's been doing this spring. He's allowed seven hits and four walks over 13 innings and sports a 1.38 ERA with 13 strikeouts. Morton has solidified his hold on the No. 4 spot in the rotation. And if he continues to maintain increased velocity with movement, we could see an uptick in whiffs for a pitcher who's averaged 6.3 K/9 for his career.

Conservatively, I will give him the Rich Hill treatment and 130 IP...leaving me with 1220 IP on the road to 1400.

9.19 - Tyler Saladino, 2B/SS, CHW
Heh, this pick got actually got me a couple compliments. There is no strategy behind Saladino other than he has a guaranteed job with Brett Lawrie gone. Until Solarte gains 2B eligibility, I needed someone to keep the seat warm. Poor Saladino, keeping the seat warm for me as well as the Sox (Moncada). Just hoping he has a hot start and doesn't hurt me too much!

10.19 - Josh Reddick, OF, HOU
Using my RIBC analysis for the pick: My lineup is officially complete. Reddick rounds out my offense as my 4th outfielder...If he can stay healthy, I am looking at a 20 HR bat who gets on base at a clip of .350-360ish...and will be hitting in Houston versus cavernous Oakland. His SLG% is pretty consistent at .450% (in Oakland) and if he can hit those two #'s, he will help my cause in OB% while not hurting it in SLG%. For my last hitter, that is about all I can ask for.

11.19 - Tyler Flowers, C, ATL
Had to choose a catcher at some point, eh? Flowers isn't that great, but I needed a catcher who won't murder my on base. I flirted with playing "stream a catcher" and just punting the position in the draft...but I needed to establish some type of floor. I'm sure he won't be on my team when the season ends.

12.11 - Alen Hanson, 2B, PIT
Kang can't enter the US. Hasnon is out of options. The one time G20 prospect and two time top 100 prospect was more of a throwaway pick than anything else. The hope is that he starts at 2nd and they move Harrison back to 3rd since Freese stinks. This spring, he's shown improved plate discipline (4K in 40 AB) and, should he have a job, is a safe bet for 30+ SB. If not...first cut!

12.19 - Derek Law, RP, SF
I'm going to ignore the ERA / WHIP in Spring Training. Heard somewhere he was a sleeper, so with Carl Edwards, Jr. gone, figured why not?

POST DRAFT THOUGHTS / SELF-ASSESSMENT

Man...I'm really mad at myself for taking Addison Reed in the 4th. The 15 game suspension to Familia is worth what? 5 saves?

Pretty expensive pick considering I could've had E-Rod or Matt Bush (one of my priority targets). If I am to compete with the two juggernauts, BH & Species, I really need my hitting to take off:

-Hosmer needs to get on base like he did in the 1st half. If he didn't hit so many ground balls, he would rival Manny Machado in hitting as his hard contact % is among the best, if not the best in the MLB.
-Solarte needs to do what was posted above.
-Arenado needs to be himself.
-Rendon, I anticipate, will be a top 25 hitter this season hitting in the 5-hole in a loaded Nationals lineup.
-Correa needs to continue on his superstar trajectory
-Polanco needs to be 2016 1st half Polanco (.372 on base)...but all season. He already hurt his shoulder. Womp womp.
-Buxton needs to be not terrible in the OB% department. I'm a little worried that he might flirt with .300 instead of the .330 range. I still think he is going to be great, I just hope it starts as early as 2017.
-One of Heyward or Reddick need to step up as my 3rd OF.

As for pitching:

I have accumulated approximately 950+ IP out of this base:

Strasburg
Manaea
Lackey
Moore
Gsellman
Morton

Based on what I'm reading...it is 17+ points across the board for the starter categories. My RP has always been a strength with respect to the ratios, so if my quintuplet of Davis / Barraclough / Hand / Treinen deliver as expected, that 17 base could go even higher. Crossing my fingers that I can stay in striking distance of the high teens in saves.

It is against my style to trade future assets early in the season for a closer. I don't see it as a worthwhile investment, especially since it is a fluid position league-wide. I like the fact that he throws gas (98+) and has been improving since 2015. That said, the Nats pen has been a mess and, with the emergence of Koda Glover, Treinen could be on a short leash, If he stinks, I will have pissed away a 3rd rounder and, possibly, my shot at a championship.

DRAFT NOTES

Here is the list I keep in my phone, accompanied by small notes on players of interest:

HITTING TARGETS

UT
-Yangervis Solarte
-Tommy Joseph
-Pedro Alvarez
-Kennys Vargas

2B
-Joe Panik: Increased BB/K by more than 0.30 after the All-Star Break. Two have sneaky breakout potential: Joe Panik, Tommy Joseph.
***Had Solarte not been named the starter, I would've taken Panik much much earlier
-Kolten Wong

SS
-Ketel Marte

PITCHING TARGETS

STARTERS
John Lackey - 180 IP - Solid Ratios
Dylan Bundy - Throwing the cutter again. Was great until fatigue caught up to him.
Robbie Ray - Elite 12.0 K/9 backed by 13% SwK%. GB% jumped by 10%
Daniel Norris - sneaky good September supported by a 3.04 2nd half ERA and nearly a strikeout / inning
Eduardo Rodriguez - excellent 2nd half...much like Norris.
Drew Smyly - on 6 days or more rest, elite.
Robert Gsellman
Pom Pom
Matt Andriese
Francisco Liriano
Folty
Matt Boyd
Patrick Corbin
Andrew Triggs
Chad Bettis
Kyle Gibson

RELIEVERS
Kyle Barraclough
Brad Hand
Matt Bush - Stuff backed by skills, attacks the strike zone, handcuffs both lefties and righties. Thriving in high-leverage setup role with TEX: 18/3 K/BB in 17 IP. Three strikeout pitches, including 96-mph FB with movement.
Raisel Iglesias - was a priorty RIBC SP target in 2016. Think move to pen allows him to become the next elite RP.
Sean Doolittle - Increased K/9. Fastball appears back
Joe Kelly - 100mph fastball. Was elite for BOS in the pen
Derek Law
Mychal Givens - sick ratios. don't count on saves
Brad Brach - see above
Arodys Vizcaino
Bruce Rondon
Michael Feliz
Carl Edwards Jr - MLB's highest spin rate on fastballs in '16.
Chris Devenski - Filthy in '16 2H (59/6 K/BB in 53 IP) as multi-inning RP
**TJ** Rubby De La Rosa - ARI bullpen a mess, great raw stuff with GB tilt, 8.0 K/BB vs. RH.
**TJ** Trevor May - MIN pen is also a mess. Hidden by his ugly ERA is a good baseline of K/BB and solid GB%

FINAL THOUGHTS

It is going to be a season-long fight for 1st place. Taking down the obvious favorites in BH and Species fixes to be a very tall order. I recognize that the odds of them winning is very high, but they both can be beat:

Species
-No flaws with his hitting. Just have to hope he falters enough with his pitching. You could point to Sano as his weak link (a good problem to have)...but that's about it.
-His pitching is great. deGrom's fastball is back...hitting 98mph, Cueto will be awesome in SF, and Tanaka projects to be just as good as last year.
-Roark 2016 xFIP could point to regression this season (opportunity for the rest of us)
-Shoemaker was awesome last year, throwing like a top 20 SP before he got hit in the head. If he stays on course, that makes 4 awesome SP and 800 IP for him.
-Zimmerman is the wildcard...if he rebounds to 2015 levels, Species will have created roughly 1200IP plus his closers.
-Could lose points with Dyson and Robertson getting supplanted / traded...I anticipate he will act swiftly and make a trade to rectify that.

In short, Species will be on autopilot most of the season. The floor is so high that I'm left nit-picking with my potential criticism.

BH
-Votto / Altuve / Miggy / Donaldson - BEASTS.
-No speed. Unless Schwarber gets C eligibility, he will be stuck having to play the WW for it...or play matchups with Schwarber / Kemp / Joey Bats and insert a speedster in place every game.
-His OB% is going to be 20...and second won't be close. He can afford to take risks on low OB% speedsters (I.E. Hernan Perez's of the world).
-BH is a little vulnerable in ERA / WHIP. I think Lester, while he will still be awesome, will see some regression with the loss of David Ross (ERA above 3.00).
-Archer and Verlander are going to strike out potentially 500 combined...just have to hope they have a couple brain fart games to hurt the ERA some.
-Paxton is the top breakout pick by just about every publication. With the amount of offseason ink he's got, you'd think he'd be confused with Clayton Kershaw. That said, what if he doesn't break out as everyone anticipates and is the season-long streamer like he was in 2016?
-What if 2016 Gerrit Cole is the norm?
-His bullpen is great...and nobody gets to the WW like BH does...a big reason I traded for Treinen. Not to mention he has his former prospect and elite RP in Nate Jones.

BH will need to create alpha with speed via the WW or a major trade. Again, like with Species, i'm nit-picking as the margin for the rest of us is razor-thin. We can only hope their pitching hits a roadbump...if it does, they will be vulnerable for takeover.

That will allow teams like Tosh, Guru, WG, Fosten, and/or myself to capitalize on it.

On another note, I am happy to see what Thumqer has done with Jaydog's old squad. He has positioned himself nicely for the future with a ton of ultra high upside picks while obtaining a boatload of prospect depth:

2018 Outlook:
C - Zunino (sure he's been hot in the spring...but if he can carry that momentum in the regular season...how is he not a keeper?)
1B - Bird (The chic pick for breakout 1B)
2B - Mondesi (Ton of speed and plays on a team that likes to run).
*Not criticizing you Bean, but could you shed some light to why you didn't 10th keep him?
3B - Castellanos (Perfect fit in the draft)
SS - Crawford (potential 10th Keep)
OF - Kepler (I'm a fan...think he will be a keep for a long time in G20...also has Naquin or Kiermaier...or Eaton again if he doesn't trade)
SP - Quintana (The most consistent SP in the game)
SP - Richards (Perfect landing spot...he's gonna have some rough games, as most pitchers coming back from TJ do...but in 2018...Richards could be a Top 25 arm)
SP - Walker (See my RIBC AAA writeup...another chic breakout pick like Bird)
SP - Wheeler (Boatload of Talent....can he capitalize on it and gain some command?)
SP - De Leon (not a fan of him as a G20 keeper, but he is another nice chip for a rebuilding squad)

At least 11-12 potential keepers...safe bet he finds 9 from that group or via trade. He might even have a seat at the big boys table in 2018!!!

Prospects:
OF Williams (10th Keep)
OF - Meadows (10th Keep)
OF - Tucker
2B / SS - Rodgers
SP - Groome (most upside SP in the minors)

He might have to 10th keep someone who won't be up (Rodgers / Tucker) if he wants a selection in the upcoming draft (like Nerf)...but it's a good problem to have.

This is, by far, my favorite league to participate in due to the level of competition and commitment from all owners. I thoroughly enjoy the non-stop banter that continues long into the off-season. With teams like Great One (especially with Moncada and Devers on the horizon), Khahan, Tree, etc., ready to compete as soon as 2018, I know my window will be open for a short while...so I gotta take my shot!

Come 2019, teams like Meatwads, MJD, Thumqer, bmd, Nerf, Khahan, etc. (ok i'm just throwing props to the rest of the league) will all be built and ready to go... ;)

This league is a marathon, not a sprint...and it will be a dogfight until the end. Best of luck to all!

Team Species report:

Offseason / preseason:

There is NO rest for the weary in G20 if you want to be on top. After an exhausting (but successful) 2016, I was not going to rest on my laurels in 2017. As usual, I started perusing rosters not long after the World Series was over and probably sent feeler emails to at least a dozen G20 teams. Those that didn’t get an email from me were obvious contenders – or you just didn’t have anybody I wanted!

With a pretty stable collection of hitting keepers (Abreu, Gordon, Seager, Sano, Betts and Cruz), coupled with a variety of pitching possibilities (Sanchez, Quintana, DeGrom and Tanaka plus 2 closers) I knew I had just a couple of assets that were trade-worthy if I wanted to stock up on picks or do a post-keeper trade.

I started with looking to package my extra starters (I had yet to choose keeping 3 at this point) and/or extra closer for (preferably) an upgrade. Nerfherders was a prospect with Max Scherzer, but I think he was in MadBum discussions at the time because he fairly quickly debuffed my overtures to trade 2-for-1 or possibly even 3-for-1 for Scherzer. I probably made at least TEN other inquiries as to people’s interest in my starters, even Aaron Sanchez, and got very little traction. True, some managers just weren’t thinking baseball yet in the midst of their fantasy football seasons, but to me it indicated a very weak / saturated market for starting pitchers……..so I hit mjd up given his lack of a young ace. As has been obvious by his moves this offseason, he is in full tear-down rebuild mode and Sanchez was a perfect SP for him to build around. We agreed on a pick package in 2017 that significantly helped shape the rest of my offseason when I acquired his high picks.

I also focused on getting a big hitter in a post-keeper trade. I like to target aging sluggers who are still very viable but whose keeper value is declining due to age. Edwin Encarnacion fit that to a T, and thankfully he was on a team with a manager who was rebuilding and could see the value in jettisoning this type of slugger while close to full value. Tree and I must have gone back and forth for 6 weeks or more. I walked away from the table a couple of times to explore other opportunities…….we each got busy…….etc. In the end I simply decided that E5 was the type of impact bat I should not get “cheap” on and be willing to pay the necessary price. It was a big price, but for 2017 E5 is a top 15 – 20 bat and probably still has a year or maybe two of prime production so he is not just a “one and done” on my team.

Thumper and I talked quite a bit about potential deals. Cueto was a target of mine in the similar vein as E5 above – a top 10 – 15 SP in 2017 but with declining long term keeper value due to his poor performance after his trade from Cincinnati and some injury concern, along with age. As a Phillies fan, I dangled Nick Williams as a way to get him in a swap of SP where I sent him Jose Quintana. I love Quintana, but he is no Cueto. We pulled that trigger as a little post-keeper upgrade for my team.

My last post-keep trade involved Meatwads, who had 3 strong closers. I had already traded away my 2017 prospect draft, so we had to look at 2018. I ranked Kimbrel 3rd out of his trio behind Jansen and Diaz. While some shine is wearing off of Kimbrel’s crown as a top 5 closer, he still is younger and has sufficient keeper value that I felt I had to pony up the 1st round prospect pick to get him for a post-keeper trade.

I had a few inquiries here and there for the Seagers and Betts’ of the world. One manager and I had our annual Miguel Sano conversation, but as I readily admitted to the Seager inquirer, I think it is a weakness of mine to formulate a trade where I give up someone like him. I bet it is to my detriment.

Keepers / Prospect Draft

As the offseason unfolded, and particularly after I acquired mjd’s 1.04 in the supplemental draft, I realized that it would likely behoove me to have a strong base of SP by keeping 3 of them in DeGrom, the post-keep Cueto (for Quintana, who I technically kept) and Tanaka. Saves are fickle and you can speculatively get them if you are ahead of the game – or they can be traded for……like I did with Kimbrel as a post-keeper trade with Meatwads. That gave me the last bit of comfort I needed to go with my 3 SP keepers.

My prospect draft was traded away so I had squadoodle.

Supplemental draft

With my post-keeper trade for E5 in tow, the only hitters I needed for my “starting” lineup were Catcher and an OF. Catchers are fickle so I was not planning on doing anything early with them. There are plenty of OF out there, so I knew I would be waiting to draft them. This left me concentrating on closers and starters with my early picks at 1.04, 2.01, 2.20 and 3.01.

I did not expect teams with high picks in round 1 to waste them on closers given their relative rebuilding status, so I actually banked on drafting Mark Melancon back onto my team at 1.04. Still, to be sure, I made inquiries with Judy (had her heart set on a SP and targeted Felix) and Great One to try to trade up. Since it wasn’t a 4-team blockbuster involving multiple top-10 players, my offer to move up a couple of spots (and give him a couple of ROUNDS value in return) just didn't pique his interest………and to add insult to injury GO went ahead and TOOK Melancon at 1.02 for some odd reason!! To make things worse, Pete jumped up to 1.03 and cockblocked me again by taking Cody Allen…….leaving me sucky David Robertson.

So that plan backfired. Feeling the need to improve, I hit Tree up and proposed to move up from my 4.20 pick to 1.20. I gave up next year’s 1st (for a 6th) to do so, but it got me Sam Dyson as my 3rd closer. True he is not a stud but I felt he was materially safer than those in the Feliz / Holland / J. Johnson tier that went in round 2. At least I hope so!

After that it was pretty vanilla. I got Tanner Roark as my first SP and would have taken Lackey if slizz didn’t. At the end of round 2 I was salivating at the chance to draft Matt Moore, but again slizz took him ahead of me. I saw Shoemaker out there and didn’t realize how good he was for a long stretch before he got hurt. He is boring but steady and a decent SP at the end of round 2. After Realmuto and Gattis went in round 2, I figured I should jump on Russell Martin at 3.01, as it was either him NOW or be in a quagmire of OBP-killing C much later. I got Martin and hope he duplicates his 2016.

I felt I did well in the middle rounds to get Brett Gardner (a boring but stable OF at 5.20), Melky Cabrera (8.02) and 3b-eligible Jose Reyes (8.07) for my hitting bench. With Sano’s 3b/OF eligibility, Reyes helps me out by backing up 3b, 1b (since I have Abreu and DH) and OF in one shot. It sucked seeing all of the top setup relievers I wanted (Nate Jones, Matt Bush, Barraclough, Hudson, etc) go from rounds 4 through 7, but I had pushed so many of my picks towards the top rounds that I just wasn’t around to get them.

Regular season start

As the draft was completing the very rough Rotowire projections had me and blue hen as favorites, but Tosh had a good draft and WG’s bevy of trades had him reloaded very quickly. Guru’s roster is still solid and Fosten has an offense to die for. Youngroman had a quietly effective draft to go along with his 4 stud SP.

I love my hitting – a great balance of power and enough speed with some flexibility. My pitching is certainly more suspect but should be competitive. It will again take keen in-season management, good streaming (I already have 2 HR and 1 sb from streaming) and bold trades to have any chance to repeat. It will be fun to say the least!

this made me laugh. but it's right on the money.

WG and i sometimes have long negotiations on trades - but this one took the cake. Species and I kept revisiting it - i think we were both willing to give an inch here and there, but we each wanted an inch-and-a-half back.

for me, it was definitely about holding out for the right offer. once i made the internal decision that i would hold E5 unless i got long-term what i felt he was worth short-term, it was easier to negotiate.

i mostly got what i wanted - pieces for the future. i tried to squeeze a player back - at one point, DeGrom was my focal point - but ultimately i think this was a deal that will pay off for both of us - which, after all, is the essence of it all, isn't it?

Not to start the debate again and not to call for another vote or anything. I realize the matter has been voted on settled. But I just want to point out that today is a perfect example of why the minimum games played is a horrible measure of 'activity.'

I went in today and saw Bregman, my starting 3rd baesman did not have a game. The only other player who could fill third was villar but he was starting at SS and I did not have another player who could fit in there. So I hit the waiver wire and picked up Eduardo Escobar and put him in my line up. He's having a fine season so far. But he didn't get the start. I have 2 catchers, neither of which had a game today. So I again went to the waiver wire and found a hot-hitting catcher who just had a day of rest 2 days ago and picked him up. He's not starting today either. So I was active and made moves and managed my line up. But from the perspective of the league at the end of the season today will be counted exactly as if I had not even logged in.

Again I'm not calling for a re-vote, the matter is settled. But when we get an illustration that so perfectly sums up the side of the argument that a change had been needed I felt it was worth just pointing out. Nothing more.

I think its time for a trade post. I'm a bit over-stocked in outfielders and have them all performing very well. Here's who you can get:

1. Andrew McCutchen - yes, he's not as young. But his 2017 projections have him at .377, 25 hr and 11 sb. 20+ HR and double digit steals from a guy who will boost your OBP. He's still ranked 58th on the top 300 dynasty player list.

2. Nomar Mazara - hit he majors last year and took off. He's got a full season under his belt and some experience dealing with the long grind. He's a natural hitter, one of the few who scouts project to a 30HR .300+ba potential. So far all he's done this year is .377 OBP, 4 HR 13 rbi and 11 runs scored. He's ranked 89th on Cockcroft's dynast rankings

3. Marcell Ozuna - .453 OBP, tied for second in the majors in HR at 5. He's always been considered a power bat but never got the opportunity to play regularly because Loria had a stick up his butt about Ozuna. Now we'll see what he's really capable of in a line up featuring Dee Gordon, Ozuna, Yelich and Stanton. A full season of Ozuna at his age 26 season is a scary thought.

4. Avisail Garica - wait what? Yep, this is the guy the White Sox traded Jake Peavy for back when he was Jake Peavey. Here's the thing - he's been getting MLB at-bats since 2012 but he's only now turning 25! So far this is looking like his break-out year. He's got a ridiculous .511 OBP going into his 3rd week. He's just making contact after contact up there. He's batting anywhere from 2nd to 4th in his line up and doing everything he can to prove he should stay there

5. Michael Conforto - when he gets to bat he produces. Admittedly he is not an every day starter. But his bat is going to be hard for Terry Collins to ignore too much longer. He's just an injury or slump away from regularly playing time and had 25+HR power.

6. Aaron Hicks - I was shocked when I saw him on the WW and he wasn't listed on any teams prospect list. All he's done in the past week is start to grab playing time at all 3 outfield spots, drive in 8 runs, keep his BA and OBP high and hit a few balls over the outfield wall.

I'm looking for SP, 1st basemen, speed (will swap OF for a 30+SB threat) or draft picks.

Because you couldn't figure out who was actually going to start that day? To me, that's one of the more interesting aspects of fantasy baseball.

Just for some stats, Tree has only made one pickup all year (3 teams have made none). Meatwads, by contrast, has made 20. But both teams are rebuilding, and I can understand Tree being pretty happy with the guys he has, and biding his time. Fun fact: Tree has the 3rd most games played, so clearly the draft strategy and injury luck have gone well.

Khahan's an interesting case. In second place, he's obviously doing something right. But he's only made 7 pickups, and is near the bottom in GP. And 3 of the last 4 were adding catchers, presumably to spell McCann.

Also of note, both Tree and Khahan have readily considered and answered trade talk, so I don't really question the activity or engagement of either one.

Even better, all 5 managers with one or no moves (MJD, Tree, Fosten, Nerf, Darkside) have plenty of in-roster movement, so are clearly making G20 a priority. Perhaps that just means the new additions have been exactly what G20 needs.

the one pickup i made was a guy i wanted to draft. and the guy i dropped for him was essentially the guy i drafted in his stead.

there's not a lot of guys on my roster i really feel comfortable dropping right now. i feel like i've only got one truly underperforming vet - maybe 2 - but they both play a lot, so i'm keeping them for the GP stat.

I'm way under pace for IP and adding a guy like Strasburg is definitely better than rotating chumps off the WW. Assuming Stras stays healthy all season (it WILL happen one of these season) he is capable of truly elite pitching numbers.

i actually made the offer.

didn't even notice Morrison was picked up today.

i felt i need a first baseman, and i'm swimming in shortstops. (jinx!). i've made it pretty clear my strategy in the standings this season is a simple one - get enough GP to not be penalized.

i loathe that this league forces me to do that, but so be it. counting stats and percentages are less relevant to me this season than GP is.

i spent most of the off season letting people know that Anderson was available, and there were no takers. i was hoping he would start the season hot to boost his value, but alas, he hasn't done that at all.

Again, looking to get younger, improve my positions (especially shortstop), and solidify stolen bases.

You're just showing off. Altuve is already pretty young and steals a ton of bases. Seriously, what could anyone offer besides Mike Trout that you would even consider.

I'd be showing off if I were doing better than 3rd place, with a 5th place finish now. I'm no lock to win 2017 and my future is tenuous with old players.

Altuve is pretty great - shallow position, hard-to-get category, only a year older than Aaron Judge. But that's the point: if I like him so much, other people probably do too. If I traded him, it'd probably be for several players, including a lesser 2B, and some other stars that fill needs.

Britton's also pretty young, but for me, it's hard to hold onto someone who isn't playing.

The rest, there is indeed an actual need here; all are age 32 or older, and I'd much rather get value now than have to deal with five guys in their late 30s. You can add Ellsbury to that list, but I need his steals this year.

I did a cursory review of the pace of our teams in terms of meeting minimum GP and IP standards. I took the number of games the Yankees have played (42) and calculated that they are approximately 26% of the way through the season.

Using that as a basis, teams should have at least 357 games played and 312 inning pitched to be roughly on pace to meet our minimum standards.

I am pleased to say that EVERY TEAM is on pace for games played - although one team is BARELY on pace at 358 games.

There are FIVE teams that are currently falling short of the pace for the minimum innings pitched. Some pretty significantly so. If you haven't had much pitching health and are not streaming some starters, please take a look at ways to improve.

But all in all, at the "quarter pole" we are in good shape. Good job everyone.

The Yankees are probably not a good barometer, as they've had a ton of rainouts.

Yesterday was day 51 of a 179 day season, so I would go with that.

With that, I am ahead on IP but a little behind on GP as I had a catcher in April playing half his team games. I've already gone to a one-team catching tandem. It kinda sucks, but it's the only way to safely get in the GP minimum.

Ottoneu does something interesting with their catching position. They have 2 slots for catchers but allow the same GP limit as all the other positions, thus you can have two part-time catchers playing at the same time.

This new 10 day DL is making it difficult to keep pace with our league minimums.

Other than trying to improve my team in any way, this is my main goal and even with the demerit forgiveness, it's going to be difficult.

In light of this unanticipated consequence, perhaps we'll need to review those limits at a later date.

Team Blue Hen May 31 Report

I missed last month, so I'm sure you are all very excited for my end-of-May report.

The 2016 G20 season was frustrating. As Daniel Murphy likes to say, whatever could go wrong, did. Heavily favored after a 194 point win, two 10th keepers, and a ton of draft picks, it should have been a cakewalk. Knowing pitching might be a problem, I started getting pitching everywhere I could: Gerrit Cole, Jake Odorizzi, and Zach Britton as keepers, Jose Berrios and Jose De Leon in the prospect draft, Eduardo Rodriguez, Will Smith, Alex Wood, and Scott Kazmir, among others in the supp draft, and trades for Cody Allen, Sonny Gray, Jon Lester, and Wainwright. In the end, it just didn't add up to a victory.

Just like after 2013, I started managing angry, and got aggressive. The offseason saw departures for a large chunk of my erstwhile future in Joey Gallo, Rafael Devers, Jose De Leon, and a host of s picks and p picks, bringing in Justin Verlander, Chris Archer, James Paxton, Alex Colome, Jose Bautista, and Matt Kemp. In a lot of ways, the team felt like the juggernaut of seasons past.

But here we are on June 1, and it hasn't exactly happened. Injuries to Kemp, Miggy, Donaldson, Britton, Paxton, and Ellsbury, and Semien, plus struggles by Verlander and Schwarber, have kept the team from reaching its full potential. But still in striking distance of first, with Donaldson and Paxton back in the lineup, the team has a pretty good shot.

From here, it's an attempt to balance the present and the future. There's a good core of Paxton, Cole, Archer, plus Schwarber and Altuve, and whatever older guys are still performing, so hopefully we can make things happen this year AND next year.

Looks like Khahan, Fosten, and Species (plus WG and Darkside?) are going to hang around. Should be a fun last 4 months.

I like the idea of the team report. Forces me to refocus my efforts at the end of each month and really evaluate where I stand.

So in a blatant rip off of Blue Hen here is Khahan's May Report

This off-season was particularly active for me with a lot of roster turn over. I moved Kershaw in a trade that I wasn't sure about and I know many questioned. At the time I was looking at a rebuild that I didn't think would be competitive for 2-3 years at which point it was questionable if Kershaw would still be as useful and how much trade value would he have. I tried 1:1 trades for hitters of similar value and got nowhere so settled for a package of 'futures.' Key to me at the time were Greg Bird and Aaron Nola, a throw in for me was Conforto. Unwanted was Walker who I turned around and flipped. I also flipped bird for Porcello. That brings us to the end of May and 1st place for a rebuild project.

Starting with the outfield, the heart and soul of my offense:
Conforto was a bench player to start the season but the talent started showing thru in spring training and I started to get excited to have him. He's been a centerpiece of the Mets and my own offense since he got a full-time gig. I owe him and Marcell Ozuna a great deal for their contributions.
Aaron Hicks was a very nice FA pick up as well. I was honestly surprised when I saw him available but he's filling the role that McCutchen was supposed to fill. I also had Nomar Mazara in an overstocked OF to start the season but he became expendable and turned into Stephen Strasburg. That leaves Avisail Garcia. Down to my last pick of the draft, not knowing who to possibly take, I fell back on my perennial disappointment in Avisail. I've been drafting him in Dirty Dozen and Ribc leagues for years now and dropping him every season in utter disgust. This time the plan was to use him as a place-holder until another player showed some unexpected breakout and filled a need on my roster. He was to be dropped. Well, he has turned into the post-hype sleeper and is the player who made Mazara expendable. He's my big surprise. Conforto had a lot of hype around him and the talent was always there. I 100% believed in Ozuna to break out this year and was shocked when he wasn't kept. But Garcia - he's paying me back for years of disappointment.

Middle-infield
No complaints on Dozier. He's doing exactly what is expected. Nothing more, nothing less. Moving Upton for him the other year was great for my team as it filled a 2nd base slot with an excess OF. Villar - nobody expected him to repeat last year, but so far this year he still qualifies as a disappointment. I was hoping for 12HR 45 Steals and maybe a .330 OBP. He should exceed 12 HR . . .

Corner Infield:
Thank goodness for Mark Reynolds. This was pure timing. The Rockies lost players and handed him the 1st base job right around my pick. He was an insurance pick up for some extra pop incase it took a while for Bell to take off. And that's exactly what happened. Bell's OBP is lower than expected but he's had a bit more pop than expected. And on the other side Bregman had a slow start but seems to be turning it around.

Pitching
I like my pitching except for Nola who has disappointed. Porcello is also coming in under whats expected but no so horrible that I feel nervous about him taking the mound. But Keuchel is not on my team by accident nor is Strasburg. And Estrada is exceeding expectations to offset Porcello. I grabbed Knebel figuring he'd get the closers gig at some point and Holland and Kintzler have just been phenomenal. The K-rate from my closers is unbelievable. Those 3 have combined for 88 K's in 67.1 IP.

I've had a lot go right this season and its a long season where a lot can happen. There will be slumps. But hopefully guys like Bell and Bregman (and maybe mccutchen who is filling counting stats at least) will break out of their slumps and compensate when another guy falls into one. I should be here all season long.

Its going to be hard to fend off BH and now species all season. And with a long term injury to trout that took the wind out of the sails a little bit from Munsons Mobsters. But his team is still pretty scary looking.

On Ozuna... The overall numbers last year hid the fact that he literally did all of that in the first half. He had 6 HR's in the second half last year. Considering the other players I had, I just wasn't sure if he would ever be a consistent hitter. Keep in mind that at this time last year he was at 34/10/27/.384 and looking like a world-beater. He was even better in June and on July 1st he had 17 HR's. He hit all of 5 HR for me after that and by September 1st I wasn't even starting him anymore.

Perhaps this is the year he finds consistency, but that is the reason why I didn't keep him.

Actually, I think your team could get better in a hurry. The pitching has the potential to be a world beater, with all these young potential studs - ERod, Fulmer, Pineda, Ross, Eickhoff. Obviously, all five have room to grow, but the potential is certainly there.

And there's sneaky talent elsewhere - Casilla and Rodney are better than their perceptions, and the roster is full of better than you think guys, like Owings and Suarez.

Might not be up there with that first slate of teams, but certainly worth mentioning.

Team Species early June clusterf**k report

It may be strange to be in 4th with 158 pts and think your season has been a disaster....but for all of my team's positives, the complete destruction of my pitching ratios due to completely (well, mostly....) inexplicable pitching performances has frustrated me to no end.

I felt I had a very good offseason / preseason. The Aaron Sanchez trade (don't worry.....he will be fine) gave me a lot of pick capital that I leveraged into a post-keeper trade for Edwin Encarnacion (that hasn't worked out so hot for me, but he hasn't been a complete disaster), who I felt gave me the thump needed to complete with blue hen's stable of studs. I then negotiated a post-keep trade for Craig Kimbrel, who has been the best closer in the game due to his ridiculous strikeout rate.

I felt my draft was okay. I made some reaches for who I hoped would be solid veterans, and while Tanner Roark has been fine to good, Sam Dyson was a disaster as a 3rd closer and Shoemaker has been mediocre (but is improving). Russell Martin's .372 obp has been fantastic as my drafted C and Brett Gardner pulling a Brady Anderson has helped offset E5's power outage.

The Good:
- Miguel Sano has vaulted himself into superstar status if he can come close to continuing his hot start. Fangraphs readers have probably gotten sick of reading articles about his incredible batted ball profile (hard hit %, etc) -- it was so ridiculous that on May 31st he had only hit 2 balls in play ALL SEASON that were categorized as soft contact. He leads the AL (tied with N. Cruz) in RBI, is towards the top in HR and has a .411 OBP.
- Nelson Cruz is like the energizer bunny - just keeps going. .383 OBP, 14 HR and tied for the AL lead in RBI with Sano.
- Brett Gardner was drafted with the hope of high runs scored and maybe 15-20 sb. He is 2nd on my team in runs but has somehow slugged 12 HR while contributing 6 sb.
- Corey Seager is solid at .379 obp, team leading 41 runs and 8 HR.
- Craig Kimbrel: AL save leader. 1.01 era. 0.49 whip and nearly 18 K/9! Sick.
- David Robertson has been just fine. Great ratios, solid K/9 but only 9 saves due to lack of opportunities.
- I guess Dee Gordon deserves to be here with 19 steals. That is a 60-steal pace and a needed cog that fills the 2b position.

The meh to sorta bad:
- Mookie Betts started off slow and has had a few spurts, but a .336 obp, 9 HR pace isn't setting the world on fire. I do love the 9 sb though.
- Jose Abreu started ICE cold. Having seen him do the same thing last year, I didn't panic. He has picked it up big time in May and is on pace for his normal 30-HR, 100 rbi, 85 run season.

The pretty bad to butt f**k ugly:
- Edwin Encarnacion has been awful. The only saving grace at this point is he is not obliterating my OBP. He is very streaky and could blow up (in a good way) in the next 100 games.
- Johnny Cueto has won 5 games for an awful Giants team, and while his K/9 is fine his ERA and whip are WELL off career norms - let alone his established level of excellence over the past SIX years.
- Jacob DeGrom has been striking fools out at a career pace, but his 4.75 era and 1.44 whip are wayyyyyyyy over career norms.
- Masahiro Tanaka's fall from grace is so mind-blowing. Unless that partial tear in his elbow is somehow jacking with his arm, there is nothing to explain how a pitcher with a 3-year career era of 3.12 and whip of 1.045 would balloon to 6.55 and 1.50.
- And don't get me started on relief bums like Sam Dyson (3 IP, 11 ER!!) and Joaquin Benoit (2.2 IP, 6 ER) that added gas to the fire.

For $hits and giggles I ran the numbers to look at just my 3 keeper SP (Tanaka, DeGrom and Cueto) and see what my ratios would be like if the three of them were JUST at their pre-2017 career averages:

ERA drops from 4.69 to 4.05
WHIP drops from 1.35 to 1.26

....which would gain me 13 points and put me on blue hen's tail.

I am not very optimistic that I can right the ship. I bought at Wacha at the height of the market and he has blown up for the worse in a big way (it happens....it's like getting your money in on the flop only to get drawn out upon). Jason Vargas should be a positive contributor and S. Oh has helped vault me up the saves category. But if I cannot get 10 more points (or more) in the pitching ratio stats, I am toast.....

It's pretty amazing the parallels between BH 2016 and Species 2017. Defending champion, stacked team. Kept aces struggle, draft picks don't pan out, trades don't work too well either. Just like with Degrom and Cueto, I kept expecting Cole and Odorizzi to come together. And ERod to step up to the next level, and then Eickhoff to step up, and then Sonny Gray to figure it out, and then De Leon to save us. Nothing worked. Only silver lining is perhaps Species has similar luck this year. As noted, he can move up in a hurry.

Nerf, FWIW, PD's team's totaled 21 points in 8 years. You didn't have the world's greatest team to take over. You've added 30.5 in the next 6, and are looking at another 10 this year.

I remain in awe of Ref AVERAGING 15 a year. He had just the one down year immediately followed by 3 years in the top 5.

100: Noted

We have some prospects approaching their limits who are not on their teams' respective rosters:

Hunter Renfroe
Clay Bellinger
Jharel Cotton

A reminder of the rules when a prospect exceeds limits:

If the prospect is on an active roster - he is immediately removed from the prospect list and is treated like any other active player.

If the prospect is NOT on an active roster - it depends on whether they ever get called to the active roster:
1) If called up by the team, he is immediately removed from the prospect list and is treated like any other active player.
2) If not called up at any time once they exceed limits, that player remains a prospect on the prospect list through the end of the season. At that time, since that player exceeded limits, he will be "called up" to the main roster and removed from the prospect list. The team retains their rights as a keeper in their normal 9 keepers.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

So a prospect who exceeded limits can't be a 10th keepered?

If so, why is there a distinction?

Correct. To me, the only distinction is that he can be your property without being on your roster, once he hits limits - all the way up until keeper time.

104 - what bh said.

A prospect just isn't a prospect once he has surpassed limits, and 10th keepering is part of being a prospect.

I think it's a little wonky that we can keep them on the prospect list through the year once the exceed limits, but them's the rules.

I hereby call him up then.

108: It has come up conversationally many times. I lucked out with Miguel Sano in 2016 (he had something like 285 AB in 2015) -- while slizz got screwed out of 10th keepering Carlos Correa the same year as he got called up a few weeks earlier and had 387 AB.

Species is up to 98 in hitting. Crazy. Thank goodness for Tanaka, Cueto, Shoemaker, and Roark, keeping this season interesting for the rest of us. And yet again, he has a monster bullpen.

And Fosten's about to get Trout back, and Wilson Ramos, and his bullpen is also amazing. And yes, it hurts seeing Berrios dominating for his team. Add that one to the #BHwasRight bucket.

Khahan's hanging tough as well. The Strasburg trade appears to have been a good one, and HIS bullpen is also great. This is gonna kill the market for closers via trade. And Khahan's managed his hitting as well as anyone, possibly as well as anyone ever in G20. Reynolds, Avisail, Ozuna, Hicks, and Conforto - he's either really lucky... or really good.

And don't look now, but WG is up to 141, closer to 1st than to 7th. I'm officially calling it a 5-team race. And oh yeah, he's the best manager in G20, so if he's close, he's a contender.

The rest of you - how are you feeling? Anybody planning a late run? Should be a fun second half!

Looking to deal Matt Davidson (pace for 36 homers, just turned 26) or Randal Grichuk (pace for 10 million homers, age 25) for picks. If you're looking to get younger, here's a chance to get these guys cheap. Let me know.

Good point, Meatwads seems extremely unhappy with the Gallo deal. Maybe I'll offer him a chance to reverse it. And Bean really hates that he got Adam Duvall. That guy is terrible.

It occurs to me that this all could be happening because people are unfamiliar with G20 rules. Are you guys aware that there is currently no penalty for batter strikeouts in this league?

But there is a penalty for guys with career combined OBP that barely sniffs .300 combined because they can’t make contact regularly enough

Duval .303

Gallo .292

Grichuk .300

Munson Mobsters 4th of July Sales Event!!! If you see something you like, pay the lady up front, then drive around back, and someone will load up your vehicle!!! Free charcoal with purchase!!!

Outfielders for sale:
  • OF Justin Upton - 29yo - 15HR, .351OBP, 5SB - This is not a mirage. Former number one overall draft pick Justin Upton is still a stud. Once he got past a slow start last season and settled into his new digs in Detroit, he has been Super Upton once again.
  • OF David Peralta - 29yo - 8HR, .363OBP, 5SB - His OBP is for real. After battling nagging injuries over the past few seasons, Peralta is back to being the OBP monster that he is. Sometimes he sits against lefties, which makes him a perfect fantasy platoon.
  • OF Carlos Gonzalez - 31yo - 6HR .300OBP - I can’t find a way to make this look pretty. It’s bad. It’s really bad. But WG likes Cargo, and WG always likes good players. Cargo is in a walk year, hasn't gotten hot yet, and has 3 months left to showcase.
Infielders for sale:
  • C Wilson Ramos - 29yo - 15HR, .313OBP (projected) - I held Ramos, so you didn’t have to. Think of my roster as an extra bench slot on your team. I payed for the new iPhone, and then you bought it on eBay from me, like a month later, way cheaper.
  • SS Asdrubal Cabrerra - 31yo - 8HR, .338OBP - He's playing 2B and he's not happy about it. He wants out of New York, and the best way is to hit his way out, into a trade and new contract. A motivated Asdrubal is a productive Asdrubal.
  • 1B Yuli Gurriel - 33yo - 10HR, .316OBP - Yuli has another level. A life-time .408OBP hitter over 17 seasons, he's a proven investment. There’s a chance for exponential returns as he gets more comfortable with the league.
Pitchers for sale:
  • SP Tyler Skaggs - 25yo - 3.66ERA (projected), 8.19K/9 (projected) - One of my favorite players. I dropped him when he got hurt, but then one phone call, and Skaggs was like, hey man, let’s get the band back together. And the rest is history. He is the ace in LA (projected).
  • SP Seth Lugo - 27yo - 3.55ERA, 3W in 4 games - The darling of the WBC, Lugo is back and ready to step in for the 2nd half surge. Peer pressure won't let Lugo be the 6th wheel, and he’s out to prove he belongs in the best rotation in baseball.
  • SP Alex Cobb - 29yo - 4.01ERA, 6W - Cobb is especially hard on himself, and doesn’t like to fail. If something doesn’t work, he will make corrections the next game. He’s like a more tolerable Trevor Bauer. If you can live with the low K/9, his ERA is consistently in the mid 3s.
Rookies for sale:
  • SP Francis Martes - 21yo - 9.7 K/9 in his first 21.1 MLB innings - A top rookie pitcher, on the team with the best winning percentage, with injuries to their starting rotation. He’s likely to stick, or get traded, either way, he’s got a chance to put up 2nd half numbers, with upside.
  • OF Derek Fisher - 23yo - 18HR, .366OBP, 13SB (minors) - Undrafted in the prospect draft. Supplemental drafted by MW in the last round at 277. Dropped on April 5th. Added by Fosten on June 14. This is the story of how the Munson Mobsters acquired Derek Fisher.
  • OF Bradley Zimmer - 24yo - 5HR, .371OBP, 9SB (minors) 4HR, .345OBP, 7SB (majors) (p-keeper) - Zimmer should put up numbers close to Grady Sizemore, who was a 1st round pick back in the day. You’re rooting for him to sit against lefties, and stay under 300 AB.
I've been hit with the injury bug lately, and found a fun flurry of fitting fantasy (five times fast) trade offers from several fine g20 managers. Much thanks to those who have reached out! I'm hoping some replacement players (free Trout) return at the right time, and the bug stays away. They say once you get it, you can't get it again. (knock on Kerry Wood) And also, to drink lots of water. (and a Mark Appel a day) I often get asked if any of the players on my team are untouchable, and the answer is Steven Matz. (no pun intended) I am a somewhat conservative and thorough trader in general (aka. slow), so I may not move Trout or Goldy this season, but I am always willing to listen to ideas. SP like Darvish, Bundy, and Berrios have done well, and I depend on their innings. Same goes for Iglesias, Rivero, and Reed. So, what is left, you ask?

Keepers I am listening to offers on (may not trade, but am open to running scenarios):
  • SS Trea Turner - 24yo - 35SB - Broken freakin' wrist.
  • OF Billy Hamilton - 26yo - 33 SB - Speed of freakin' light.
  • 2B Dan Murphy - 32yo - .390OBP - Babe freakin' Ruth.
I am humbled to be succeeding in a league with intelligent managers. Mostly I’ve had players step up at just the right time, and lady luck has been on my side. I've made 14 moves so far, and own 4 players who were not on my opening day roster. Math is fun, and variables are random, and that’s why they don’t play the games on paper. This season is setting up to be a photo finish, and I know better than to bet against some of the horses in this race. To the top 5 managers in the standings, I want to graciously extend, my thanks? Thanks to WG for his exemplary fantasy behavior (sometimes when i’m at the supermarket, i yell, 'you kids could learn something from WG!' And then everyone looks around all weird, cuz I because all I said was 2 letters). Thanks to Khahan for trading me Mike and Dom someday in the future. Thanks to Species for his tireless commish duties and if/when his ERA/WHIP stabilizes, uh-oh, look out! And thanks to blue hen for his good sense of humor and keeping me company talking baseball for these past 15 years. Thanking people... before I smack them in the back with a chair, pummel them into submission, and turn heel while the crowd boos... seems like something the Macho Man Randy Savage would have done. So that's what I went with. Blindside. Ooh yeah! I’m the tower of power, too sweet to be sour. I’m funky like a monkey. Sky’s the limit, and space is the place. Dig it!

Nice conversation! I thought I'd compare Gallo to a couple third basemen who have come along the last couple years. Comparing him to Grichuk and Duvall, two older outfielders with much less success in the minors doesn't seem accurate. Let's not forget, in his rookie season this year, Gallo has been more valuable than Mike Moustakas, Todd Frazier, Evan Longoria, Ryon Healy, Jonathan Villar, Manny Machado, Kyle Seager, Nick Castellanos, Alex Bregmen and many other highly thought of former prospects, many of whom are in their prime.

Minor Leagues
Nolan Arenado .345 obp, .473 slg, .818 ops, 49 hr, 1695 ab
Miguel Sano .372 obp, .562 slg, .934 ops, 107 hr, 1641 ab
Joey Gallo .369 obp, .587 slg, .956 ops, 152 hr, 1736 ab

Joey Gallo - Age 23 .303 obp, .510 slg, .813 ops, 21 hr, 245 ab

I've spoken in depth with 5 of the top 6 teams. They either think their roster is already loaded and difficult to upgrade, or they feel they can't win and aren't interested in trading future assets. There's only one person who is going to have their decisions justified with a title. Everyone else will be left to second guess themselves. I can only speak for myself, but if I was near the top right now, I would make it very clear who the favorite is.

Time for my own seller's points.

I've got quite a few solid SP's who are having great seasons with their results backed by advanced stats such as FIP. A few examples:
Zack Godley (27 yrs old): 2.58 ERA / 0.95 WHIP / 3.11 FIP / 8.4 K/9
Trevor Cahill (29 yrs old): 2.96 ERA / 1.23 WHIP / 2.98 FIP / 10.8 K/9
Alex Wood (26 yrs old): 1.67 ERA / 0.89 WHIP / 2.04 FIP!!! / 10.8 K/9
Mike clevinger (26 yrs old): 3.33 ERA / 1.19 WHIP / 4.26 FIP / 10.3 K/9
Taijuan Walker (24 yrs old): 3.30 ERA / 1.34 WHIP / 3.52 FIP / 8.0 K/9

I also have Jose Quintana who may get traded by the white Sox which would likely boost his value regardless. All of the names above are available - however know that the younger guys are the ones I'm trying to collect in my rebuild. I have a few useful hitters depending on what you need (Smoak 23 taters, Souza 16 taters, .367 OBP) who can be had as well.

I'm not looking to gouge your future, I have one conversation with a contender that includes me including Austin meadows, a top 10 prospect with that all too valuable 10th keeper tag awaiting in the offseason that will also give you a boost for 2018 and beyond. In return I am looking for picks (preferably prospect picks), prospects, or younger talent (hitters or SP) on your MLB roster. I've made quite a few reasonable trades that help both teams in this league, my next one could be with you.

Blue Hen Midseason Report

It's been a great season, Fosten and Species look formidable, and Khahan and WG can still threaten. Should be a great second half.

For this report, I'm going to look at offseason trades, keepers and draft picks. Was it a good decision? I'll give a simple yes, no, maybe for each.

Jake Odorizzi and Cam Bedrosian for a 3rd rounder.
Yes. Bedrosian has been hurt and not closing, and Odorizzi hasn't become elite. The 3rd rounder got me a prospect pick.

Joey Gallo for Justin Verlander and a first rounder.
No. Verlander's been pretty bad, and Gallo was great but is coming back to earth. The first rounder has definitely been justified at this point - but Gallo looks like he'll be amazing, and I need a big second half from JV to come close to a maybe.

Two prospect firsts and Jose DeLeon for Archer, Kemp, Semien.
Yes. Archer still has another gear he needs to take, and Kemp has been great. Semien was decent before getting hurt and still could be great, but Archer makes the deal.

A million picks for Jose Bautista and Alex Colome.
Yes. Colome's been struggling, but has 25 saves at the break. That was important with little from Zach Britton. And Bautista's been great, especially after a lackluster April. That would have been hard to replicate with a high pick, without a lot of luck.

Devers for Paxton and two prospect picks (Collins and Rutherford).
Yes, barely. Devers did exactly what we thought we would do, but now that he's a top prospect, this is the kind of trade you'd want to make: Paxton, Elvis, and Collins, two players who were exactly what my team needed this year.

A 3rd rounder for Guru's prospect pick.
Yes and a half. This turned into Adrian Morejon.

Keepers:
Altuve, Votto, Miggy, Donaldson
Yes, let's move on.

Lester, Verlander, Cole
Maybe. Two are struggling, and not young anymore, although obviously have a shot at a good second half. Cole has struggled, and not become the ace we're still expecting. Not saying I would have kept these guys, but certainly could have been more active in trade attempts.

Britton
Maybe. Definitely should have traded him in March (and I tried). But he's going to come back strong.

Schwarber
Yes. Someday, we're going to look back at this and wonder why he struggled and was sent down.

Picks:
4.17 Nate Jones
No. Should have taken Addison Reed, taken one pick later. For about a month, Slizz would have taken that trade. Also Luis Severino went 11 picks later.

5.17 Jacoby Ellsbury
Yes, I guess. Although Brett Gardner went 3 picks later and was definitely a better pick. But Ellsbury is good and I saw (and still do see) more potential for speed than Gardner.

6.19 Travis D'Arnaud
No. I hate catchers. At least a bunch of guys after him sucked, although Dan Straily and Chris Owings might have been nice.

8.13 Mallex Smith
Yes, definitely. Love Mallex. He's so young and so fast. Here's hoping he keeps playing time when Kiermeier comes back. I smell a trade or two.

9.02 Cameron Maybin
Yes, of course. He's been amazing, hit for power, stolen bases. Really a great sparkplug for my team. Wait, what do you mean I dropped him?

9.17
Yes, of course. He's been amazing, hit for power, stolen bases. Really a great sparkplug for my team. Wait, what do you mean I dropped him?

Also, Alex Wood was taken one pick after I took Tapia. Yes, the same Alex Wood I held for more of last year when he was injured.

10.17 Ketel Marte
No. Wasn't going to solve my shortstop issues and wasn't going to solve my steals issues. Would you believe Corey Dickerson went one pick earlier?

11.17 Grant Dayton
No. Wasn't going to solve my saves issues and wasn't going to solve my ratios issues. Would you believe Scott Schebler went one pick earlier?

Let's see how my roster has done so far:

Keepers:
Myers: Yep, still good!
Arcia: Getting better every month
Frazier: Also getting better every month
Davis: Awesome
Brinson: Not there yet. His first taste was pretty bad, but then he went back down and started crushing again.
Scherzer: The best. So glad I didnt take the bait on trading him.
Bumgarner: Comes back this week
McCullers: Breakout!
Snell: Looks like he's gonna be the odd man out come next offseason. Just can't seem to throw strikes.

Draftpicks:
1) Ramos: Pretty good after a slow start.
2) Brantley: Ehh.. Started out hot but doesn't have enough power or speed right now.
3) Forsythe: Not great so far, but getting better
3) Madson: For two years in a row I've been burned by the Oakland manager choosing the wrong guy.
3) Carter: It was a terrible pick at the time, and was still bad even when he was playing every day. Fortunately it didn't cost me too much - i.e. I didnt have to rely on him.
4) Nova: Awesome
6) Choo: Awesome
7) Garcia: Ehh. Average at best, but worst, not getting wins. Finally parted ways with him.
8) Vogt: Awful
9) Gregerson: Awfuller
10) Hammel: Awfullest
11) Saunders: a non-factor
12) Frazier: Also a non-factor, but having a decent season
13) Strop: A non-factor/bad

Notable FA's:
Flowers/Suzuki: This tandem has been outplaying every catcher out there. Keeping both has been well worth the extra bench slot.
Schebler: Picked him up on waivers. Not sure why or how he was available, but he's still been pretty good since I've had him.
Miranda: Very good, kind of in the Ivan Nova mold. But with Scherzer and McCullers I can afford to have guys like him.
Lowrie: Between him and Forsythe, should be OK at 2B, my weakest position.

Back to Flowers/Suzuki. Just as reference, here they are vs. the starting catchers in the ASG:

Posey: 36/10/35/1/.406
Perez: 37/18/57/0/.318
Flozuki: 47/13/52/0/.372

Prospects:
Cody Bellinger: Called up when I realized I couldn't 10th him if he gets 300 AB's. Probably should have called him up a month sooner.
Clint Frazier: In the bigs for now. Probably won't get 300 AB's
Kolby Allard: Not sure he has the K potential of some of the other highly rated pitching prospects. But I am pretty good on SP's right now.

Khahan's Mid-season report or coming back down to earth

Its been a rough month for Khahan's Keepers. June was not kind to me as I've dealt with a few key injuries. Admittedly, injuries alone don't explain the fall in points. But being without the services of Dallas Keuchel, Jonathan Villar, Michael Conforto and Aaron Hicks certainly had an impact. Add in extended 'day to day' issues for Avisail and a large chunk of my roster just wasn't doing anything in June. Though replacements such as Danny Valencia did OK.

Here is what really hurt though:
Pitching - complete implosions of Marco Estrada and Rick Porcello. We're not just talking ERA's in 4.00 or even the 5.00's. No, over the past month Estrada's ERA is 9.00. Porcello got dropped for an ERA in the 8.00's. The rest of the pitching staff has been good, but those 2 imploded so bad for such an extended period of time that it had a major effect. I've lost 10 points alone in ERA/WHIP and my team win total has bottomed out at a 1.

On the hitting side, my catchers are slumping. Period. That's all there is to it. McCann and Maldonado who were slightly exceeding expectations early in the season have nose-dived almost as hard as Porcello and Estrada. They are a combined 37/156 over the past 30 days (including walks) for a .237 OPB. Add in a bad month for Strassburg - 5.01/1.39 and even accounting for some bad outings things went way worse than anybody could have predicted.

At 1st base while Reynolds continues to put up a .380+ obp for the past month (I love it) he's only hit 4 HR in that time compared to 15 HR in the 1st 2 months. And Josh Bell continues to frustrate with inconsistency. Still he shows enough signs of a nice 1st baseman that he is in my keeper plans. He was always a project for next year (which is why I scooped up Reynolds to begin with).

Dozier's OBP is down to .328 on the season. He had been hovering around .350. The past month has been horrible for him.

Still its not all bad. McCutchen has a .513 OBP over the past month. No, that's not a typo. He's found his swagger again. Ozuna's is only around .340 on the month but that is about what I expected from him. Bregman is at .381 on the month. His counting stats will come. Like Bell, he's a work in progress and my eye on him is more towards next year.

I've got an excess of saves and 3 solid closers. Brandon Kintzler is 24/27 in save opportunities with a 1.07 whip and .229 ERA. Solid consistent source of saves with nice ratios to help.

I'm hoping the break can help some of my guys settle down. While a few exceeded expectations by quite a bit and that contributed to a lengthy 1st place stay by a team that none of you considered a contender after the draft - I think my June showed an exact opposite fluctuation. If my guys can settle down somewhere in between I should still be fighting in the top 5, possibly the top 3 come the end of the season.

Closers for trade. Im willing to move one of my closers:

Greg Holland - one of the highest rated closers this season. 31 saves, 1.72 era 1.06 whip and the big stat: 49K's in 36.2 Innings. Thats about 12.05k/9 Oh, and barring injury a secure job.

Brandon Kintzler 28 Saves and secure job. Really good ratios: 2.78/1.18 Lower on the k/9 but he's looking at roughly 20 or so saves the rest of the season.

Core Knebel: Another secure job. Only 18 Saves but we were a good 1 to 1 1/2 months into the season before he took over the closer role from the doomed-from-the-start Feliz. Over the course of the whole season 18 saves, 1.71 ERA, 1.18 Whip and a paltry 83 K's in 47.1 IP. No I didn't reverse those figures. He has a 15.8 K/9!!!!

What do I need? SS, SP. Could also package with Dozier to upgrade 2nd base for me. Picks next year are always nice. But really, SP is pretty high up on my list.

I could also package with Ozuna or Conforto but you'd better be giving me a real OF in exchange.

TRADE ANNOUNCEMENT
Khahan sends Greg Holland to WG
WG sends Luis Castillo to Khahan
Coming into today I had a closer to spare. Then Kintzler went down with a real baseball trade and lost his closer role. This means if I traded one of my closers I'm down to just 1 closer. But
I've got a solid 20 points in Saves with an 18 and 20 save lead over the 2nd and 3rd place.

There is a chance Bean and/or BH catches me in Saves and I could lose 1-2 points there. but hopefully with Castillo I get more K's and a few W's. Plus his ratios (so far at least) actually seem like they'll help me.
Taking a long term approach I also dropped Kintzler for Chase Anderson. He's on the DL but should be back with a week to 10 days. Looking over available pitchers, he was head and shoulders above just about anybody else not injured. I'd rather have him for a week or so on the dl than starts from the likes of Derek Holland or Jordan Zimmerman. On a 'rest of the season' outlook compared to just a 'whats happening tomorrow' outlook I added 2 starters with solid k/9 (8.47 for chase and 9.46 for Luis) and good ratios. Plus Eraso Ramirez a few days ago (his era is higher than I'd like, but his whip indicates his era should come down some). Suddenly I have 3 new SP to eat up my IP (I'm 267 IP under pace) and add solid K's and W's. I should more than make up the points I'll probably lose in Saves.

Commentary on the trades, if anyone is interested.

At this point, I have a pretty big lead. So, two reasons to trade:
- Lock it up
- Get value for next year

In both cases, I am looking at both goals. Puig is often polarizing. But he's been a top 10 overall keeper and still only 26. Still in the top 100 on a few keeper lists I looked at. I think he'll be a nice piece to include in a big trade over the winter. Related note: looking to move some of my older guys for some younger guys. Plus, with Mallex getting sent down, I need quality at bats to round out the year.

You can never have too much pitching. Paxton, Lester, Rosenthal, and Faria all went down. Fortunately, I'm ahead of pace in innings, but I want the last ones to be good ones. Shark has a killer schedule coming up - MIL, SD, STL, CHW, and I want to get those quality innings. Also, a good showing through this gauntlet will help increase his trade value. Probably not enough to get much right now, but if he ends the season well, he could be another nice piece.

Both have been unlucky, especially by BABIP, so hoping that can correct itself.

Still looking to move Miggy, Lester, Verlander, Britton, Colome, or Minaya, if anyone's looking. Let's do this.

I wonder how Anthony Rizzo got 2B eligibility! Mistake? ESPN splits show him with only 1 AB while at 2B. I thought 10 games were required to gain eligibility.

Not much chance to exploit it, as I already have 3 other players who are elig at 2B.

Rizzo actually played 2B during a couple weird shifts - it was his actual position in the boxscore (something like 1B-2B-1B). He actually has an outside shot at 20, which would make him 2B eligible for 2018, presumably the #2 ranked 2B.

The Blue Jays messed around with their defense as well, and Jose Bautista has 8 games at 3B and Josh Donaldson has 4 games at SS.

these are indeed some weird shifts. 4.1 innings in 10 games. is blue hen in the Cubs coaching staff? this micro management looks like him.

baseball reference

Bautista and Donaldson started half of their games at the unusual positions and played that position for most of these games, so they can't be really compared to Rizzo.

For Yahoo it's 5 games started / 10 games played. I wouldn't think they would do that for CI by itself without 1B or 3B, but I guess they do.

When Species approached me in late May about possibly trading Oh, he noted that my team was in trouble. Indeed, I think I was ranked 17th at the time. I really thought my team was better than that, but with the season already past the quarter pole, I decided to deal. For better or worse, losing Oh hasn't really hurt much, as he's only gotten 10 saves for Species since the trade.

Meanwhile, I've had quite a run! Currently in 4th, and only a point out of third - although to be fair, really in a 4-way a battle for the 3rd-6th positions, which are separated by only 5 points at this moment.

I got hurt alot in starting pitching, including injuries that knocked out both Kluber and Hendricks for awhile. Some of my other starters just crapped out. As of the end of July, I was hovering in the 7th-8th spot, but ranked last in IP. At that time, I needed to average 60+ IP per week just to avoid usage penalties.

So I decided to start aggressively going for streaming SP opportunities. I was dismayed to see that available SP's were pretty bleak, but I tried picking up a few spot starts each week, and ended up holding on to some of them. I hoped to get back into the mix in wins and Ks, but risked torching my ratios in the process.

It's been quite a run so far. 342 IP in the month of August, with an ERA of 3.44 and a WHIP of 1.24 for the month, actually improving my ranking in those cats. I also logged 24 wins and 326 Ks for the month (8.6 per 9IP). And with no closers to start the month, I end the month with two - Doolittle and Vizcaino - both who I have held for most of the season. So I managed to pile on 17 saves for the month, getting me back in the game in that cat as well.

Not sure how much gas is left in the team tank, but it's been quite a buzz for the past 5-6 weeks!

"I was dismayed to see that available SP's were pretty bleak"

This is the issue I've been having. Streaming pitchers in a league with 20 teams just doesn't seem to be a viable strategy. Most days the options are atrocious at best. I remember twice in the past month there were 0 SP to choose from for streaming options for the day. My team's luck with the W has been pretty lousy and that alone is threatening to end my season on a low note. I can't buy a win from streaming, regular starters or if I tried stacking middle relievers.

G20 Concession Speech
While I will vigorously rotate my pitching and hitting to maximize my standing, it is time for me to concede the 2017 G20 baseball season. Congratulations blue hen on your 4th title.

Blue hen deserves a ton of credit for fielding an amazing team and managing it even better. His post-keeper trades for the likes of Archer, Kemp (even for only 56 games), Paxton and Colome easily trumped my aces when I traded for Kimbrel and E5. His usual magic in streaming and the waiver wire and his trade for Elvis Andrus (I assume each of you would be as shocked as I was to be told he is a 20/20 man this year!) coupled with pretty steady pitching from Cole, Archer and Paxton (and Verlander OK) has him with 37 out of 40 points in ratios despite a poor season from Lester. He then survived a mostly lost season from Britton by getting saves from Rosenthal, Norris and a few others along the way. Sure he was buoyed by amazing seasons from Votto and Altuve but had to manage around Josh Donaldson’s injury (and he has GONE OFF since his return), as well as pedestrian seasons from Miguel Cabrera and Jose Bautista.

Honestly, even though there are circumstances of mine that were hard to predict / out of my control as a manager, he just outmanaged me this year. Congrats.

I felt so great going into this season with my keeper setup and the post-keeper trades I had lined up. All of the projections still had blue hen in the lead, but I knew I would be in the hunt and would have to manage well to have a chance. Before the supplemental draft had even started, I had 7 of my 9 starting hitting positions filled with pretty highly rated players who complemented each other well statistically. All I needed was a Catcher and an Outfielder.

All in all, my offense performed phenomenally. Up until my recent bout of injuries with Miguel Sano and Corey Seager, I think the only DL stint I had all year from that core of 7 hitters was one DL stint for Sano earlier in the year. In that core of 7 hitters 5 of them have played at least 126 games, Seager has played in 119 and Sano 110. I could not complain a bit. These guys were augmented by a career year from Brett Gardner and an awesome first half from Russell Martin at C. Add in 38 amazing games played by Scooter Gennett (8HR, 27 rbi, 32 runs and a .380 obp) and a great first month by Jason Werth (.449 obp in 19 games) and it was an offense to be proud of. I was as high as 99 points in hitting (and no chance to catch Fosten in SB) and sit at 95.5 as of this writing.

Obviously as I sit almost 20 points behind blue hen with such stellar hitting my pitching was a complete cluster. None of my SP keeper have pitched to their historical ratios: Jacob DeGrom, Johnny Cueto and Masahiro Tanaka (despite the scary elbow tendon that was around ALL of 2016) came into this year with stellar ratios over the past 3 (or more) years and were legitimate top 20 SP. While sure, one must always account for some fluctuation in performance, the sheer magnitude of the implosion of these aces was not easily foreseen.

Add to that some absolutely disastrous relieve problems that added TWENTY THREE earned runs in EIGHT innings had me scrambling to improve ratios that were simply damaged beyond repair. A mid-season trade for Jason Vargas helped originally, but the wheels came off after 2 months and he did more harm than good, ratio-wise. Another midseason trade for Michael Wacha paid some dividends but he too came back down to earth. To me it is a miracle that I have over 16 points in W, K and SV and worked my ratios up to 7 and 9 points right now.

Considering my draft pick coffers are empty, I have a lot to ponder this offseason. Most of you should expect emails from me this offseason……..I think I have moves to make. I have a great young core of talent in Betts, Seager, Sano and even Gordon – with Abreu and Encarnacion still legit thumpers – but without picks or prospects my potential is limited.

Congrats again blue hen on a well-deserved, well-managed victory.

Thanks for the note Species, and thanks for the great competition this year. The lead was 10 a couple days ago, but now it's back up to 19. But, as Yogi said, it ain't over til it's over. I'll keep managing the next few weeks, mostly because I'm going to miss it in the offseason.

The postkeeper trades worked out pretty well (even Semien, with .370 and 4 steals in 10 games), and were pretty necessary given the lackluster seasons from Miggy, Britton, Lester and non-breakthroughs from Schwarber and Cole. That's more than half my keepers!

2017 has also been a year of being proven right on players I don't own anymore. Chris Sale is a stud, and worthy of the high price I was asking. Giancarlo Stanton? Yeah, he's pretty good. And Gallo, Duvall, Devers, Berrios, Schoop, Alex Wood, LoMo, Betances, all great. Well, maybe not Betances. Lance McCullers, Brian Dozier, and Jose Ramirez, continued last year's breakthroughs. And Anthony Rizzo got 2B eligibility - man, can you believe Guru got him for a couple of picks?

Much more on this coming after the season, just enjoying the remainder of it while I can.

Sounded like a reading from The Bible.

No BH, Paxton will be 30 next year and only now finally about to go over the 125 IP mark. Assuming he can get back off the DL again. I may as well pick a top reliever and get some Saves to go with my nice ratios w/ small amount of IP.

Fair points, although for the record, Paxton won't turn 30 until after the 2018 season. Wouldn't want anyone to read your incorrect statement and lose interest in trading for Paxton.

Well, my team has finally dropped to last place with little hope of upward movement; what happened you all my youngsters?

Peraza was a bust, Russell has been on the DL forever, Franco might lose his inf job to Crawford, Herrera has been up and down, Salazar has 5 wins, 5! Neris was wildly inconsistent. Santana and Sanchez are my only youthful bright lights. Giles was fine once they let him finish games.

I agree with the streaming SP, there were just none worthwhile available. I gave up on ERA and WHIp and tried for counting stats.

I have never finished this low...

Sigh.

On to football...

I wouldn't say my statement is incorrect BH. I looked at the year he was born. He turns 30 in 2018. But I think he pitches well enough when he does pitch that you'll have plenty of suitors speculating on the year he finally puts it all together.

And I will be in the market for several SP next season. But likely I'll be acquiring veteran non-keeper types in-season. Unless I get some big offer in the coming months involving some keeper level SP.

I stayed silent the last 2 days because nothing is official. I will start jumping around when he is indeed posted.

I guess ESPN & Co should already plan on how they want to handle a 2-way player. will there be 2 Otani's to draft? only one who is eligible at SP and OF/DH? if he is eligible at DH and SP will he get pitching stats when he is in the DH slot?

on paper the Syndergaard - Otani combo looks like a strong 1-2 punch.

209: Nippon Ham was able to get Otani to sign in the first place by promising he could both pitch and hit. With the restrictions on international signings for players under 25, there will not be a hugely material difference (except for those teams that are limited to $300k) in the offers of the top suitors.

Will an AL team promise to let him DH 3 or 4 games a week to gain an advantage in their pursuit? Its even worse for an NL team - letting him DH is one thing, but playing the OF between starts is another....it is going to be fascinating. I can't wait to see him pitch!

If he signs with a team that trains in Arizona, I may have to make a trip down this year to see him in Spring Training......

Actually, I could see him with an AL team - no need to hit on the days you pitch, and then DH the other days. The Yankees look good from that perspective, and they have an extensive history with Japanese players.

Unless someone can think of a better answer, I think the best solution for ESPN or other fantasy sites is to make him eligible at both positions, and you just pick your slot - don't get hitting stats if you have him activated as a pitcher. The Yanks/DH answer would make this even more viable.

Yes, that's correct, but you have to send him down before he hits 110 innings. And if he stays under 110 for the year, you can 10th keeper him, otherwise, you have to 9th keeper him.

Is that really correct?

If he calls up Newcomb a 3rd time, doesn't Newcomb then have to remain on the active roster? Can he still be 10th-keepered at that point? I thought that 10th keeper only applied to prospects, and after 3 callups, I didn't think he's technically considered a prospect anymore.

Oh, I missed the 3rd callup part. Yeah, if he gets sent down, then called up again, I'm not sure he can be sent back down. But I don't know that we have precedent for that - I'll call it the "automatic" send down at the end of the year.

Could we get this clarified. Here's what I'm looking to do. I called Newcomb up for the second time for his start time. My intention was to send him down (second send down) to stream a pitcher spot, then call him up for his next start and leave him on my roster. If I do this, assuming he stays under the IP limit, can I still 10th keeper him next season?

So with as things stand now, I can leave him on my roster the rest of the season and 10th keeper him next year, send him down and 10th keeper him next year but I can't both send him down and call him up this season and still 10th keeper him next year. And I'm fine with that. Just making sure I play nice. :)

This is seriously getting too close for comfort.

Species is all the way up to 167. In 2012 and 2013, that would have been a winning total. I'm 10 points ahead at 177, but have a ton of points to lose. Much easier to go down than up at this point, given how the numbers look.

Kudos to Species for making it a race, even after posting his concession speech.

Also kudos to WG, who is up to 157 despite throwing in the towel several months ago.

Victory Speech

Just putting down some thoughts, thanks everyone for a great season.

In 2016, I lost because of pitching. I had great hitting, but couldn't put the pieces together with pitching. Gerrit Cole as a keeper? Took a major step back. Jose Berrios in the p-draft? Great in the minors, shelled in the majors. Alex Wood in the draft? Decent until he got injured. Scott Kazmir in the draft? Worst season of his career. Traded for Sonny Gray? He was terrible. Traded for Jon Lester? Too little too late.

In 2017, I wasn't taking any chances. I kept 3 SP. I traded 40 homer guy Joey Gallo for Justin Verlander. I traded two p-picks and Jose DeLeon for Chris Archer. I traded Rafael Devers for James Paxton and some stuff. I picked up Jacob Faria off waivers. When he got hurt, I traded for Jeff Samardzija. I streamed well, getting more than 10 good innings out of Hoffman, Musgrove, Blach, and Chatwood.

And you know what? It worked. 20 in ERA and K's, 18 in WHIP, and 17 in wins. With great hitting, my pitching wound up even better. And credit to Species for keeping it pretty close, but the season wound up almost exactly as planned.

Thanks to everyone for a great season. Really disappointed Fosten couldn't get to the hitting limits - he could do some damage with that team. Guru had an amazing turnaround during the season. WG re-established himself as elite. And Meatwads, Tree, Thumqer and others did well in the rebuilding phase.

For my team, there were some developments moving forward. Pretty rough years for Jose Bautista and Miguel Cabrera, and traded away two prospects in-season. That said, the core is intact, and should be competitive next year without an offseason trade. Who wants Jon Lester?

I hope everyone is enjoying this crazy World Series. Honestly I am not sure I like these crazy home runs.......is a 2-1 nailbiter more entertaining and nuanced than a 13-12 barnburner?!?

Congrats again to blue hen........but the quest to dethrone his a$$ started before the season was even over. I have plenty of bullets to fire this offseason, and IMO it is never too early to start!!

Team Species is ready to deal and has a variety of worthy assets:

Hard to move, but not impossible
Mookie Betts
Corey Seager
Miguel Sano

Top 50 studs
Craig Kimbrel
Dee Gordon
Edwin Encarnacion
Jose Abreu
Nelson Cruz
Jacob DeGrom

Top 100 players
Scooter Gennett -- hard to believe he put up a .342 obp with 27 bombs and 97 (!!) rbi. All better than (or equal to in terms of rbi) than Robinson Cano. He has earned a starting job from Day 1 (which he did not have for 2 months).
Masahiro Tanaka -- got over his homer-itis after a DL stint to cure a dead arm. Nearly pitched the Yankees to the World Series.

Keeper worthy / upside
Johnny Cueto -- the blister issue had an effect on him ALL SEASON. There is no other logical explanation for his struggles. Still in a great pitchers park.
Michael Taylor -- 19 hr and 17 sb in 399 AB. Curious how the Nationals OF shapes up with Eaton back next year. I think Taylor takes CF and Eaton's superior LF defensive profile (he was awful as a CF) shifts him there.
Alex Claudio -- posted a 2.50 era and 1.04 whip in locking down the closer's role for the Rangers.

Don't let too much of the offseason go before paying some attention to your baseball team! Your football and basketball drafts are done! Inquire within.

I better ignore that drama and hope that this gets solved until players report to spring training. there are over 3 months until then. on the other end the posting agreement expired on February 1, which is over 9 months ago and they were not able to come up with something new by the time the posting period would have started under the old agreement (November 1).

I am a bit worried that it may take another 2 years until he comes over. but that was the gamble I had to take when I drafted him last year.

Who wants Miguel Cabrera?

Statcast suggests a Miggy revival in '18

Per the Statcast™ quality of contact metrics, there was no hitter in baseball with a bigger gap between his quality and amount of contact and his actual outcomes. Based on how hard, how high and how often Cabrera hit the ball, he was still a top-20 hitter, similar to Corey Seager or Gary Sanchez. Based on actual results, he was outside the top 200, more like Yunel Escobar or Daniel Descalso. It's a huge gap.

Our treatment of Ohtani in terms of position eligibility is going to be dependent upon ESPN. We will need to see what they make available to us first before we make any final decisions.

I would assume the most likely scenario is he has duel eligibility as a hitter and a pitcher, and must be placed into yr's lineup as one or the other. And, just like with National League pitchers, if Ohtani hits on days that he pitches, hitting stats will not be credited.

Looks like the CBS Prospect List is out. Luiz Gohara, the young Braves fireballer is in there at #18. Just looking for a modest pick upgrade here - who wants him?

So I have a small dilemma - what to do with my keeper list. I'm counting more than 9 so if you are looking to expand your list I'd like to offer up Dallas Keuchel and your choice of Conforto or McCutchen for a SP.

I am putting together the 2018 Supplemental Draft grid so trade talks can occur more readily. In doing so, I found the following trades that need some attention:
---------------------
WG
ID: 35338278
Wed, Jul 20, 2016, 20:00 Tree gets Michael Saunders, Steven Wright, Ryon Healy, Carson Fulmer (p), 2018-8
WG gets Adam Jones, Adam Wainwright

No return pick to WG. Please advise if intended otherwise.
------------------------
3-22-17 mjd receives a conditional 4th round pick from slizz (Heyward), contingent upon:
2018 4th round pick if Heyward fails to have 20 combined hr/sb
2018 3rd round pick if Heyward has 21-34 combined hr/sb
2018 2nd round pick if Heyward has 35+ combined hr/sb

Jason Heyward had 11 hr and 4 sb. As such, this is officially a 4th rounder to mjd. However, as with the above, no return pick to slizz is mentioned.

As has been historical practice, if both teams can agree (something to the effect of) that "ooops, he was supposed to get my last pick back", or whatever, I will allow the correction. However, the team that did not originally give up a pick (Tree above, mjd here) is under no obligation to include a return pick.

---------------
Then the old "double trade" trick:

3-23-16 mjd receives WG's 7th for his 10th (Plouffe)
3-25-17 Meatwads receives WG's 7th for his 14th (2017 pick swap)

But WG later acquired a 7th from slizz:
7-25-17 WG receives slizz' 7th for his 9th (Kinsler)

So that pick will be used instead.

---------------------------------
I consciously did this:
5-24-17 Guru receives a 3rd* from Species for his 14th (Oh)
*if S. Oh earns 30 or more saves in the 2017 season, this pick becomes a 2nd
5-24-17 Tree receives a 3rd from Species for his 12th (Wacha)

.....assuming Oh would rack up 30 saves. So, here is what we do:
1) I process trades linearly. Guru gets my 3rd round pick.
2) Without a 3rd at the moment, my trade with Tree would be bumped to a 2nd round pick. However, I have until the Supplemental Draft to acquire a 3rd instead to fulfill my trade. So, at this moment, I will not process this trade on my draft grid. Tree - be sure to stay on me about fulfilling this trade!
----------------------------

The following teams get the annual (and very tongue-in-cheek) "Get off your a$$es and make some trades" award, given to those teams that did not make a trade involving a draft pick:

Judy
Bean
darkside
youngroman
.......and, ironically:

blue hen!

I have already had an inquiry about a trade......which, for me, is a rarity and a shock that I was not the first one to do so! Things start to percolate around now and heat up after the Super Bowl. It is never too early!!

Win a championship and keep all your draft picks. Isn't that the dream?

If anyone remembers, I only had 9 picks in last year's draft and am looking for something similar this year.

Apparently, the "publish range as html" capability in Excel has been changed. I couldn't find a simple way in Excel to get the draft grid into html in a format compatible with this forum's setup.

So I tried to use a google docs process, which appears above. It seems to be working - but I don't know if it's dependent on browser, or google account, or anything like that. Please let me know if you can't read it (post 264)

Guru and I are realizing that we have not run the lotteries per our rules. They were supposed to be run in October. What shotty management at the top.....

But first, it is everyone's favorite time ---- DEMERIT TIME! Woo hoooo!

Our rules dictate that teams must accumulate 1375 GP by hitters. The following teams received demerits for GP:

Thumper - 1368 GP = 1 demerit
Great One - 1343 GP = 2 demerits
Fosten - 1356 GP = 1 demerit

Our rules dictate that teams must accumulate 1200 IP. The following teams received demerits for IP:

Tosh - 1097 ip = 6 demerits
Great One - 1163 IP = 2 demerits
ttucowboy - 1192 IP = 1 demerit

However, we passed the forgiveness clause which forgives the first 2 demerits for every team. As such, we only have 2 teams receiving actual demerits this year:

Great One - 4 total minus 2 free = 2 demerits assessed
Tosh - 6 total minus 2 free = 4 demerits assessed

Teams should review these calculations for accuracy.

Our rules dictate that demerits are FIRST applied to the worst finisher first. This matters because - prior to demerits - Tosh had the 6th best slotting while GO had the 8th best slotting. So, per our rules:

First -- Tosh drops from 6th to 10th. In applying that, Bean, GO, Meatwads and ttucowboy each move up one.

Second -- GO drops 2 spots from 7th to 9th. In effect, he only loses 1 spot.

Quirky I know......but you have to have a set basis upon which to apply the rules, and this is clear.

Couple minor corrections to the chart:

I would have picks 9.14 and picks 9.18 (post 259)

I made the deal with mjd with the understanding that I would get his last available pick for Heyward (post 259). Going forward, I will make a better effort to clarify when making future deals!

All looks good to me. "If a team finishes “in the money” for prize pool purposes (ranked 1-6), then demerits will be ignored." No forgiveness needed, I can just be ignored.

The lottery was run this morning. Random draws were executed online, and audit copies of the numbers were automatically sent to Species, Tosh, and Youngroman

The results are unusual, but I have rechecked everything, and "it is what it is."

Here are the results:

Supplemental draft:
Pick #1: darkside
Pick #2: Tosh
Pick #3: ttu cowboy

Darkside gets the top pick from the #11 lottery position (chances were 13/1000)
Tosh gets the $#2 pick from the #10 position (18/1000)
ttu cowboys gets the 3rd pick from the #8 position (32/1000)

I don't ever recall all three of the "top seeds" getting shut out before.

Prospect draft:
Pick #1: Beastiemiked
Pick #2: Thumpers
Pick #3: mjd

BMD was in the #5 position (chance of selection was 81/1000)
Thumpers was #4 (109/1000)
mjd was #1 (250/1000)

Lottery mechanics are laid out in the following spreadsheet:

Since, I mentioned Gohara, here's the CBS Top Prospect List:

18. Luiz Gohara, SP, Braves
Age (on opening day): 21

Acquired from the Mariners last winter for a couple of ill-fitting parts, Gohara has quickly emerged as the best in a system loaded with pitching prospects. His five-start trial down the stretch doesn't appear special at first glance, but he had a strike percentage and swinging strike percentage on par with Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale, Corey Kluber and Max Scherzer.

285: Well, technically two of them can stay on there for now. The following two were NOT on their respective teams at the end of the season. By rule, they are supposed to be "automatically called up" and then treated like any other player on the active roster (i.e. - eligible to be kept in the teams' 9):

Bean: Jharel Cotton
darkside: Hunter Renfroe

I need Bean and darkside to either: 1) designate someone to cut so I may put these guys on their roster; or 2) confirm that they will renounce any further rights to them and they will simply be free agents.

Happ, Haniger, Williams (313 AB - ouch!) and Bellinger are already called up to their teams and have been removed from the prospect list.
