Let's open the first post of 2018 with a *** TRADE ANNOUNCEMENT***

Khahan sends Craig Kimbrel RP, Bos and his last available pick to Bean

Bean sends his round 3 pick to Khahan

-----------------------

For those looking to round out or improve their keeper lists. We have 12 teams, 7 keepers, that's 84 players I have (or had before the above trade) 12 of the top 84 ADP on my roster. If you are looking to improve your keeper list talk to me about the following players:

Ozuna or Benintendi I'd say 1st or a 2nd and 4th. These guys will go in the 1st round and I'll only trade 1. the other will be a keeper. We keep 84 players and these guys are ranked high 30's to low 40's in various sites (in keeper ranks they get a little better).

These guys I can be more flexible on.

Happ - 5th

Keuchel 4th

Chapman/knebel 3rd

I also have Michael taylor, Justin smoak that I'd take a round 9 pick for or Villanueva/Franco that I'd take round 9 or later

I also am going to be looking to make some moves this spring. I have a deep keeper list as well as excess talent of the left side of my infield.

Correa SS
Seager SS
Bregman 3b/SS
Rendon 3b
Darvish Sp
Carrasco SP
Murphy 2b
Devers 3b
Encarnacion 1b
McCutchen OF
Paxton Sp

So I have 11 of the top 84 per yahoo and if Khahan has 12 there should be some biters. Since my top 3 keepers all play SS and an additional 2 of my top 10 play 3b (Bregman's other position) I would like to move 2 of these 5 (ideally Seager and 1 of Devers/Rendon). I would also prefer to keep only I will likely reach out to managers where I see a more natural fit. See the players below broken into loose tiers based on my preference to move.

Wow me tier
Correa
Bregman

Solid Keepers Id be happy to be left with but will move
Murphy
Encarnacion

Priority Trades due to team construction
Seager
Rendon
Carrasco
Darvish
Devers

Can be had cheap- I know they aren't exciting
McCutchen
Paxton

Outside of Seager who would need to be swapped for a 1b/OF all could be had for draft picks although I would prefer not to move Rendon early unless receiving quality player. Many keeper rankings I am seeing have Seager as a fridge first rounder. That's not available too often.

guy's on my short list of keepers, but i can't keep 'em all, and i'd love to wheel and deal:

Elvis Andrus Tex - SS
Yoenis Céspedes NYM - OF
Rougned Odor Tex - 2B
Miguel Sanó Min - 1B,3B

Ryon Healy Sea - 1B,3B

I've processed the trades we've had so far. Wiggs, DPR, GO and Bean - please check your rosters for accuracy. Also, if you are making a trade that is not 1:1 on players (IE trading a player for a draft pick or trading 2 players for 1) if you are receiving more players it would be helpful if you would post who you would like me to drop.

Bean I agree we should start ironing out those dates. Have we even confirmed everyone is in? I think I have seen activity from most managers so I think most are ready to go but I am not sure that covers everyone.

In the past the draft has started around the 3rd week of march and lasted 8-9 days.

With the season starting on the 29th and allowing time for WW, this means the draft can start at the latest on the 18th. As this seems unnecessarily tight I would suggest we target a keeper deadline between next Sunday March 11 and Wednesday March 14.

Did we ever resolve how Ohtani was going to be treated?

35Khahan
      ID: 2911322610
      Thu, Mar 08, 2018, 13:51
34 - no, we didn't get a final vote or enough for a final vote. I'll copy/paste the original discussion from the 2017 thread here:

Yahoo as announced they will be adding a Shohei Ohtani/pitcher and a Shohei Ohtani/Hitter. I believe this is how most of the major outlets will end up handling him. This leaves us with 3 potential options that I see:

1. Hitter and player are 2 separate entities and must be drafted and treated separately. This is easiest to track but honestly I think greatly devalues him. Part of his allure and value comes in 1 guy delivering pitching and hitting stats.

2. In the draft hitter and pitcher are 1 person and when you draft one the other gets drafted, losing your last round pick. But once the season starts they are 2 separate entities and can be dropped/traded handled as individual players. This gives him the most value and the manager the most flexibility but seems a bit odd.

3. In the draft hitter and player are 1 person and when you draft one the other gets drafted, losing your last round pick. Once the season starts, they are still considered 1 person, taking up 2 roster spots. But they must be traded, dropped/added together. This makes the most sense but has the most possibility of causing problems. Especially in an add/drop situation. While it improves his draft value it may actually depress his trade value as managers receiving Ohtani need 2 roster spots for him.

For keepers I think it makes sense to go along consistently with whichever option you pick above. Options 1 and 2 means he is 1 keeper slot for a hitter and 1 keeper slot for a pitcher. Option 3 means you keep him with 1 slot as both a hitter and a pitcher.

Any thoughts?

I would consider option 3 to be a bigger issue than option 1 as it forces you to hold a dead roster spot if Ohtani doesn't pan out as a hitter (and with him only playing a couple days a week I think this is likely; what other part time hitter is rostered?). As such, I think this option should be eliminated.

Another way to treat it is to give the manager who drafts Ohtani and extra roster slot. This is effectively saying that we don't like the choice Y! made and are going to override it to treat him as one player. (I think this means giving everyone an extra roster slot and not allowing everyone to use it)

We also need to be cognizant of the longterm implications of our decision. What if next year ohtani is treated as a single entity?

First, if we move to ESPN, I believe they handle him as just one roster spot for both the hitter and the pitcher. However, I prefer Yahoo, and really dont care about Otani, he's not a proven keeper quality guy (in a 7 keeper league), so he's not worth the time we spend talking about him (yet).

So, if we don't want to consider moving to ESPN just for this one player, who has a lot to prove still, I believe if someone drafts him, they know the baggage that comes along with him. So, why not just make it as simple as possible for the commish....make him two separate players and be done with it. Other leagues have more complex scenarios because otani has been stashed as a prospect. We dont have that here.

The only complication I can see, is if one person keepers him as a pitcher, and another person keepers him as a hitter. Then later, Yahoo combines him into one guy. The solution there is simple, who ever has had their guy the longest gets the combined guy, even if they drafted them one pick apart, the rule is the rule. If one person keepers them both, or he has only been keepered as a pitcher, let's say, then Yahoo merges them, its time for celebration for that manager....that's all there is to it.

Few house keeping issues:

1. Please don't forget to set your keepers in yahoo. Go to your team page and at the top is a blue box. The first link in it is: "choose your keeper players" click the link, checkbox the 7 players you are keeping and hit 'set keepers' at the bottom. This is even more important than in past years as Yahoo retooled the commissioner tools and I don't see where to specifically put keepers in.

2. Loki - Vlad guerrero jr is in yahoo but does not seem to be in draftime's database. I'm just throwing a place holder in there. But barring changes from Loki, please everybody realize Vlad Jr is already picked.

3. I chose 7 keepers and 17 rounds for the draft at draftime. When I go to do trades its giving me 24 rounds to choose from. Therefore I'm going to hold off on processing draft pick trades at draftime until we start the draft. I suspect at that point it will put keepers in 7 of the 24 rounds. I just don't know if it will be round 1-7 or 18-24.

4. trade pick review Let me know if I missed any at this point:
-Khahan gets bean's R3 pick. Bean gets khahan's last round pick (kimbrel)

-Wiggs gets DPR's 7th and 10th round picks. DPR gets Wigg's 1st and 4th round picks (Devers/Encarnacion)

-Khahan gets DPR's R3 pick. DPR gets Khahan's R7 pick (Ozuna)

and from last season:
-Holt gets Loki's R6 pick Loki gets Holts R10 pick (cruz/Hamilton)
-Loki gets ttcu's 13th round pick Ttcu gets loki's 4th round pick (Osuna)
-Loki gets Astade's round 6 pick Astade gets Loki's R2 pick (conforto/jansen)

2 trades that are referenced but not clearly defined in last season's thread) I don't have full info on:
Astade traded loki's round 6 pick back to Loki. What pick did Loki send to astade (lynn deal)

-I sent my round 1/?? to Astade for ??/?? (kluber/springer deal) (I may have this in email just haven't been able to look. I think one of the picks astade sends me is his 10th)

So Ohtani? With draft starting (and I could argue some impact on chosen keepers as well) we need to decide. Bean suggestion in 37 which I believe is your option 1 works for me as there doesn't seem to be much preference either way so we should keep it simple.

i think he needs to be two separate players, if yahoo lists him as such.

whether that devalues him, is decided as whether there is value to begin with, which is something we don't know, although early reports are that he can't hit major league pitching.

Is there any reason we can't consider Ohtani as one player, and leave his owner to do whatever he wants with him? Put one version or both on active roster. One keeper slot. The only thing it requires is that other teams keep their hands off in the case that one of the Ohtanis is in the FA pool.

so basically, the owner of Ohtani can call him up and release him and call him up and release him as many times as he/she wants, whenever he wants, with no penalty?

<62> And if both are in the FA pool? Even for one day?
what then?

I just think we are making far too much of this Ohtani guy. Keep the rule as simple as possible, if you dont like the rule, dont draft him. There are at least one or two free agents you could choose from instead of Ohtani.

The requirement would be that you would always have to have him on at least one slot on your roster.

Really the only special value he can provide is in leagues where he only uses one roster spot and can be used as both hitter and pitcher. That isn't the case in Yahoo. I just think it is weird to own him as a pitcher but not have the rights to add him as a hitter as well, if you so choose.

RE Ohtani --- I think the decision Yahoo made is asinine. ESPN made the right choice as far as how to handle him. With that said, this league is in yahoo and I think option 1 is the best way to go for the sake of the commish. Other options seem nice, but at the end of the day I think keeping it simple is best.

Btw, is there any reason why we continue to stay in yahoo? ESPN has gone down the sh!tter as a company, but I still prefer them over yahoo for fantasy leagues.

Nothing is going on right now. When I set the draft up I had an option to enter the number of rounds and followed instructions to subtract our keepers. So I know I set up 17 rounds. I can only guess I didn't hit the button I thought I hit because even after keepers are in its listed as 24 rounds with 7 keepers (giving us 31 man rosters).
I've asked GO to do a new renew on the 2017 league and let me start over. Since all that's been done is set the order and enter keepers this will probably be easier. You guys don't need to do anything, just a heads up to avoid confusion if you see 2 dirty dozen drafts on your home screen.

Ok, keepers are all entered. Draft order is almost set. I got Da Bomb and DPR's tie and used the ever so tedious custom draft entering every single pick of every single round individually flip flopping their picks.

But I missed Loki and Holt tied for 4th. So I'm waiting for their tie breaker numbers to come back. Then I'll process trades to flip flop their picks every other round. Then I can process all traded picks then open things up.

Hell hath no fury like a tedious draft redone!!!! hahahah

If you didn't get the email from me, just email me a number between 1 and 10. Loki did the same and so did GO. Whichever of you is closer to GO gets to pick first in odd number rounds.

Ok, I think the easiest way to double check everything is this way: Below is a list of all trades that I have processed and are showing in draftime. If you do not see a trade listed, or you see an error, please post here:

-Loki gets 6.06 from astade
Astade gets 11.06 from Lokie

-Khahan gets 2.11 from DPR
DPR gets 7.10 from Khahan

-Holt gets 6.08 from Loki
Loki gets 10.01 from Holt

-Loki gets 13.04 from PeteN
PeteN gets 4.08 from Loki

-Loki gets 6.06 from Astade
Astade gets 2.08 from Loki

-Khahan gets 8.06 from Astade
Astade gets 1.10 from Khahan

-Astade gets 2.09 from Holt
Holt gets 10.06 from Astade

-DPR gets 9.06 from Astade
Astade gets 4.11 from DPR

-Wiggs gets 7.12 and 10.11 from dpr
DPR gets 1.01 and 4.01 from Wiggs

If you made a trade involving a draft pick and its not listed above, its not processed and I need to be made aware of it

Technically Astade's picks should be skipped until he makes them up. I dont like the idea of setting somebody back 3 whole picks. So I'm going to make 1 pick, wait a while and give him a bit more time before making my second pick. We'll be moving again tonight. We're a competitive league but a big part of fantasy baseball to me is fun. So I'd rather give Astade a bit more time before moving on.

We have to pause this and get it figured out.

I don't think it was very cool to just move the draft forward especially on the first day of the draft. In the past we have had either a 6 or an 8 hour clock and that was moved past 3 of his picks in a little over 5 hours.

Not sure how to fix it at this point

We've been a 4 hour clock for as long as I've been setting the league up. Between the 2 picks that I made I gave him an extra hour and 10 mins. Thats a bit more than a 25% extension. Looking at the timing had I known he would only need another 10 mins I would gladly have given it to him. But at that point we had a time out and no word what was going on. No clue if it would be 5 mins or another 2 hours.

Give GO and I chance to talk and see what options we have. The draft is paused for now.

I'm going to type out the trades here as I figure this out Loki. I'm looking at the actual recorded trade in the 2017 season Yahoo.
1st trade on June 22:

astade trades kenley jansen and r6 to Loki (so you are +2 round 6 picks)
Loki trades Conforto and R2 to Astade

2nd trade on August 25
Astade trades Lance Lynn and R11 to Loki
Loki trade r6 (traded from astade) to Astade (so you are +1 round 6 picks. Just your normal one)
That's Loki and Astade and you guys are breaking even on your r6 picks

Then on August 17
Loki trades Billy Hamilton and r6 to Holt (so you are now 0 picks)
Holt trades Nelson Cruz and r10 to Loki

Looking over draftime picks in round 6 I see: astade with 6.06 (this is his own pick which satisfies the conditions of your 2 trades) and Holt with 6.08 and 6.09. This is his pick and your pick from the trade. You have 10.9 and 11.6.

Looks like the typo was in the write up but the actual trades were processed correctly. Sorry for the confusion on that one in the thread here. It is inputted correctly though.

I've been guessing right lately, it seems. Round 4 I was really torn between filling in 1st or 2nd base. I took a first baseman only to see the other 3 I was looking at disappear over the next 7 picks (though holt grabbed a first baseman right before me).
Round 5 I decide to go for a 2nd baseman and fill that hole. I grab one only to see the other 2 2nd baseman on my list disappear with the next 3 picks. Odor was top of my list and I almost took him over Santana but Tree grabbed him.

Good draft so far. Happy to catch the top end of some of these positional runs.

I have no clue loki. When I got baez instead of Whit I thought maybe I had just done something without realizing it. But when I saw Baez the first thing I did was check to see if you had taken him and I was really really confused when I saw matt harvey on your team and merriweather taken a few picks later. But going into your pick 5 I had a 2 man queue - Whit Merriweather and Javier Baez set to auto pick. That was it. Nobody else in it. Ian Happ was 3rd on my list but I didn't put him in queue since I was gauranteed one of merriweather or Baez.

I left auto pick on but didn't think anything of it because the queue was empty.

Khahan, by chance did you have both an overall queue and pick-specific queue? Without that in place, I can't think of any reason the system would auto-pick random players. The queue database table is only related to the players table through the queue table.

Khahan, that would be the most likely reason. My general rule of thumb is that when I set a pick-based queue, I always turn off my general queue auto-pick. There are plenty of reasons to not do that ("try to get these guys, but if I can't, then give me the best overall"), which is why it's still available as an option, but I tend to be a quick picker, so it's what I go with.

I think this draft has me the least excited for the results than any draft in recent memory. 1 of the main causes was not having my round 1 pick (carelessly traded away by me not paying attention). But I still think I did pretty good overall. I have my own stats projected out for my starters. Comparing them to the standings last year, it should still be a good season for me.

But on to the review:
Starting with myself
Khahan Last year 3rd (despite being in first probably 4/5 of the season!!)
Overall I really do like my team. My pitching is top notch, though my closers aren’t as good as they were last year. But any team starting with Stephen Strasburg as his 3rd best pitcher is doing something right in those categories. On the hitting side I have a nice mix of speed with Turner and Benintendi as keepers and adding in Lorenzo Cain and Javy Baez for double digit steal candidates. On the power side I hated giving up Ozuna pre-keeper, but with Judge and Machado as keepers I have a decent base. I should be middle of the pack in power stats, a league leader in pitching stats and upper tier in speed stats this year.
For my keepers I have to give myself an A+ with one of the top keeper lists in the league. I worked hard for a few years to get here, lucking into Machado in a draft a few years back and Judge last year. I made some trades that turned out really lucky for me to get Kluber, Scherzer, Strasburg and Turner (most every player traded away has faded or gotten injured). Had quite a few years at the bottom of the pile but now have a monster of a start pre-draft each year. For my draft itself, I felt it was lack luster. My stats filled in nice, I don’t see any gaping holes but I just feel like I missed something this year. I’d have to give my draft a B+. Predicted finish top 3

Da Bomb Squad last year t-1st Co-champion
What can this league say bad about Da Bomb squad. From the first year he joined us he’s been a perennial competitor. He’s got a solid keeper list with 2 top notch starting pitchers, elite speed from Dee Gordon and great hitters like Blackmon, Sanchez, Donaldson and Votto. His draft didn’t excite me. Its actually a lot like mine – cant say he did poorly and can’t say he didn’t fill in the stat sheet, but something feels off about it. I gave him an A for keepers (some aging issues with Gordon and Donaldson as long term keepers. Elite speed tends to peak sooner and Gordon loses 2nd base eligibility next year) and a B+ for draft. Expected Finish top 5

Homerunners last year t-1st Co-champion
Lets get right to it – Solid keeper list top to bottom. I’m not a huge fan of Darvish but he’s keeper quality. I’m not a huge fan of Rendon but he’s keeper quality. No weak links in his keeper list. Solid A
Draft for dpr I love except for 1 pick – taking Ohtani in round 1 was a risk. Me personally I’m not a risk taker with my early picks when I’m expecting to be competitive (rebuilding sure, but when I feel I’m in the hunt I want floor and we just don’t know Ohtani’s floor). But Yelich is a phenomenal pick. He’s always been the bottom end of keeper quality but with the move to Mil and a better all around line up I think we see Yelich take a bit step forward. Kinsler is another great pick I think for a bounceback year. I think he has a top 10 2nd baseman year this year. Draft A- Expected finish top 3.

Hoboken Zephyrs last year t-4th
On the keeper list I think we’re seeing philosophical differences in strategies. Loki was competitive last year and had players to keep going into this draft to stay competitive. But his keeper list included both Ronald Acuna and Vlad Guerrero Jr. Now, there is nothing wrong with these guys. This is a keeper league and they are highly touted prospects that certainly may justify their inclusion. But his list looks more like a reloading or rebuilding list than a list for somebody trying to win it all this year. He keeps 2 unproven players and throws back a 3rd baseman who batted .272 with 38HR last year and an OF who batted .263 with 28 HR and 15 sb last year. Still with aging stars like Nelson Cruz an injection of youth isn’t uncalled for here. So while I’m starting out with a B for Loki’s keeper list I’m the first to admit in 2019 and 2020 he could easily get the last laugh out of this year’s keeper crop.
As for his draft – his first pick is the player I would have kept from his list anyway – Moustakas so that’s good. Then his 3rd pick is Matt Harvey who I have no faith in any longer. I think Loki’s draft, like his keeper list, is more reflective of somebody who wants to win it all next year or the year after. I think with some tweaks he could have been competitive this year and built a strong keeper list for next year. Instead he went all in on 2019. If I felt he should have been rebuilding to begin with I’d probably give this draft an A or A+. But since I think he could have been fighting for a top 5 this year I have to downgrade a bit and Give him a B+. Expected finish 5th-8th. He’s still got a solid team.

Holt last season t-4th
Holt is another manager like Da Bomb who just gets it done year in and year out. He ‘only’ tied for 4th last year which is disappointing. With his track record its tough to question his fake baseball acumen. But I have to this year. Despite a keeper list that includes Mookie Betts and Clayton Kershaw I wonder about his keeper choices. 3 pitchers from the same team. 2 pitchers who’s adp puts them well out of the top 84, an aging 2nd baseman in Carpenter who’s BA was always his big selling point and is declining. Keeper ranking B (upgraded from a B- due to Kershaw and betts)
His draft was solid. He starts out locking down saves with a pair of closers who will give him as many k’s an elite SP and improve his ratios. 2 of his next 3 are then aging players well past their prime. Despite having Kershaw I think he’s middle of the pack in pitching and upper middle of the pack hitting. This means overall he’s a middle of the pack team. Predicted finish 5th to 8th

Bean’s Clippers last seaon 6th
Last season places 6th thru 9th were all pretty close but Bean edged them all out. His keeper list is pretty solid and I think he made the best choices with what he had to work with. Hendricks and Godley are solid pitchers. He’s got ungodly power in Stanton, Davis and Cano. But keeping Segura and Kimbrel – segura is a great guy to get in the draft to shore up positions but he’s not the kind of player I want to make my keeper list. And in a league this size I personally just don’t believe closers are keeper worthy. Doesn’t mean he’s wrong to keep Kimbrel just a philosophical difference. I rank pitchers as elite, tier 1, tier 2 etc. He’s got a pair of tier 2 pitchers, no tier 1 or elite, a closer an a questionable SS. I’d have to give his keeper list a B-
For his draft, Bean did a good job. His keeper power is top notch so what does he do in the very first round? He picks up elite speed to compliment his power. With Hamilton and Khris Davis he’s got some real drains on BA so his 2nd pick is a guy who contributes across the board but really shines in BA. He snatched Jacob Faria from me the round I had him queued up. I think maybe he should have been more aggressive going after young prospects to finish off a retooling phase he seems to be in. Instead he took good players who complimented his keepers. I almost feel like he and Loki should have swapped strategies. Still, it was a solid draft. If Hamilton breaks out and learns to make contact, Alex Cobb is done visiting the ER and Jose Martinez breaks out he could easily improve his keeper situation next year. But for this year I expect to see Bean right in the middle of the pack. Draft was an A, overall a B. Expected finish 6-9th.

Astade last season 7th
Astade has a bit of a jeckle & hyde keeper list. Altuve, Springer, Bogaerts is a great start. Conforto, once he’s back should be a great contributor. Then a closer who’s not even a top 5, Justin Bour and Willson Contreras. Contreras at least is potentially a top 3 catcher. I think, looking over his list, Ozzie Albies should have been kept over one of those guys. Keeper grade: B-
In the draft, despite the issues early on, though, I think Astade did really well. For a guy who kept no SP on his keeper list, he’s got a very solid set of starters and I think his pitching will be around 3rd or 4th best overall. He should be looking at a few 10s, and 11s in some pitching categories. His hitting is solid, not great or top notch but solid. He has some good young players to improve his 2019 keeper list, drafted to not have holes in 2018. His draft I give him a B+. Expected finish above last years ranking. I put him 5th-8th with an dark horse calling for a 3rd place finish.

Go’s SecondCity Saints last season 8th
GO is the other of the big 3 that perennially puts up podium finishes. His keeper list is phenomenal, though I would have kept Verlander or Yelich over Posey. Mix of established stars and young prospects, talent from the first 3 rounds. Overall keeper score A. Rhys pisses me off only because 1st base has been a weakness of mine for years and I grabbed him last year. He did nothing for 2 weeks so I dropped him. 2 days later he went on an historic HR binge.
His draft, like last year, leaves a bit to be desired in my book. But I don’t think that has ever been GO’s strong point. His strong points have always been his keeper list and in-season managing. I don’t like Quintana or Walker. I’m not overly fond of Paxton but see more potential there. Braun is hurt too often. But I expect GO to work his magic in season. Expected finish 1st-5th. His keeper list is just really strong to start with.

Ttucowboy or the manager formerly known as Pete N last season 10th.
Pete’s got a solid keeper list. He’s waiting on a few players to blossom like Gallo and Mazara. He’s got some major early round talent in Freeman and Bryant. Martinez and Ray for solid SP. He is where I was 2 or 3 years ago towards the end of my rebuild and if Mazara and Gallo truly break out, he’ll have a great list going forward. Keeper grade A
For the draft I don’t think he did himself any favors. I keep waiting for Myers wheels to fall off. Yes, he was basically a 30/20 1st baseman the past 2 years but he hit .259 and 243. His 2016 success was buoyed by a huge 1st half. You don’t sustain 30/20 numbers hitting .240 to .250. Wheels are coming off. Same with Lamb and Schwarber – BA just isn’t there to give faith in sustained success. But those 2 are still developing, he got delino Deshields. A few young players who could break out to great success. While I don’t think Pete is going to be competitive this year, I think this year will shape his team for the next few – he either gets his breakouts and is set or his youngsters take a steaming dump and he’s back to square one. For a rebuilding team I think he could have done better in the draft, but he certainly could have done worse, too. Draft grade B. Expected finish 6-10th. He did snag Knebel away from me, I was torn between Knebel and Keuchel in round 2 and figured I’d shoot for Knebel in the 3rd with my extra pick.

Jam Block Kill Chop last season 10th
Tree’s keeper list is top notch. He’s got 1st, 2nd, 3rd and SS covered with young studs in their primes. He’s got Mike Trout. He’s got a tier 1 SP. He gets an A for his keeper list.
He did quite well in the draft too. Verlander as his 2nd SP with Thor gives him an immediate lift over 6 or 7 other teams. 2 solid closers. He can hope that the Gray’s meet their potential this year and he’s in a dogfight for one of the best staffs in the league. Add in his pitching and only the inactivity Tree has given us the past 2 years will keep him out of the top 5. But if he disappears for the last 2 months of the season, leaves healthy players on the DL and DL players in his starting line up he’s right back here near the bottom. Predicted finish (assuming active thru the whole season) 1-5.

Perm Dudes last season 11th
PD’s keeper list is an improvement over last season but still leaves a bit to be desired. Aaron Hicks and Scooter Gennett don’t belong on keeper lists in a league this size. Adam Jones days as a solid keeper are a few years behind him. Still Aaron Nola is up and coming. Justin Upton is well established. Justin Turner (until his broken hand) is a solid choice and Travis Shaw, while not necessarily keeper worthy, could continue to build and show he’s worthwhile. Keeper Grade C+
For the draft I think PD drafted good players. Greinke should continue at his 2017 level for a few more years and if Cabrera bounces back from last year PD just stole a keeper for another 3-4 years. And if this is the year Puig learns to focus and puts it all together PD has 3 players who are immediately auto includes in most keeper lists. I think some of his other picks could have been more focused on young prospects. But if 2 of those 3 pan out, PD takes a big step forward in 2019. He even has some pieces he could trade for draft picks or young players to teams in contention. I don’t see much happening for 2018 but PD has the building blocks in place to start taking huge leaps forward. Predicted finish 10th to 12th

Super Twins plus 1 Last season 12th
I like Wigg’s keeper list with Archer and Berrios to lead the Pithing and Devers and Pollock to lead the hitting. Pollock does have an injury history but assuming he breaks free of that. Schoop is growing and should be good. EE – it may be time to let him go. He’s entering the decline phase. Keeper list Solid B

For the draft Wiggs approach seems to be take chances on young players and hope for building blocks. That’s right where he needs to be, too. Matt Olson is a potential replacement at 1st for EE for him. Ian Happ is a 2nd baseman who hit 20HR last in his rookie year. He should add to his numbers this year. Dinelson Lamet is a young fireballer. After that he takes a lot of solid veterans that would compliment a strong keeper list. I really think one year Wiggs has to say, “screw it” and do a full commit to a rebuild. This means forgoing the veterans. Loading up on young hot prospects and walking away with a draft the fully prepares him for the next seasons keepers. If he does that, the next year he’s in the top 5. For this year though I think its 10th to 12th again.

I always enjoy reading your analysis, and this season is no exception.
You are right on target about my team. I thought I had a good chance to win it all in 2017 and made trades to make that happen. As a result I traded away too many early draft picks to be competetive this year.
So I am looking towards 2019 and 2020. I think that both Acuna and Vlad, Jr. are "generational" players and Walker has the potential to be a top SP. Walker has Kershaw-like (not Koufax-like) potential. By 2019 Acuna will have had nearly a full season under his belt, Walker will be up for the entire season, and Vlad, Jr. will be up by the end of April.
Moustakas is an interesting player for me. In 2016 I also thought I had a chance of a podium spot until my hitting was decimated by injuries. As a result I traded a young pitcher with potential who I had been keeping on my bench for a year or two. Moustakas did very little, and Wiggs got Syndergaard.
Concerning The Dark Knight, I have been following Harvey's spring in the NY media, and I think he is back. If he has returned to preinjury form, the Zephyrs will either be in the running this year, or I will have trade bait for draft picks for 2019.
Thanks for all your work in commishing DD ( and for RIBC AAA for that matter too).

I totally agree with your analysis. When i took this team over it was a sh*t show. I tried to keep it afloat but it is impossible when you have no keepers. I decided this year to make some moves and acquire some young talent via trades (berrios and Devers). Then draft some young guys. Not having my 1st round pick hurt me in the draft but i thought it was a move I needed to make. I just don’t want to finish last

Thorough run down Khahan. Don't know where you find the time.

Agree with you, if not for my keepers, I might have a higher grade. Hoping to do a little better than the 6th at best grade you gave me. Any extra credit available?

Good write up. I agree with much of it including GO and Tree being the teams most likely to make a move up while Loki and Holt look set up to take a step backwards. GO especially had a top tier keeper list (Id put it 2nd to Khahan pre Bumgarner injury). Going through the draft I also found myself likin many of his picks (although you can tell he is drafting for upside which creates some risks.

Khahan definitely had the best keeper list but I am not sure I love the makeup of the team built around it. Zunino, Santana and Baez/Albies (although I like Albies) are all lower tier options for their positions. He should run away with pitching categories again but I wonder if the above are enough to support his strong keeper hitters to keep his hitting towards the top as well.

Id put DaBomb teams a bit below the teams mentioned below but definitely acknowledge his track record in the league. I think he just targets an older/less sexy type of player that can be undervalued in keeper league which keeps him competitive year after year. You can also count on him to pick up several extra gp to boost his hitting stats.

I always find it interesting to see how teams rebuild and target upside and in general feel that some of the lower placing teams could afford to reach for prospects a bit more. There are always a few going early (including Guerrero who could have a 2020 ETA being kept) but then Kingery and Robles two highly rated prospects with 2018 ETAs are going in the late rounds to contending teams. Those both are players who could be top 50 players and strong keeper for next year.

As for my team, I probably give myself the third best keeper list for this year, mainly because I am missing a sure fire first rounder but still have I believe all 7 of my guys in the top 50 (maybe only Khahan can match that?). I also have 3 players under 24 who are going in the first few rounds. I think there are only 2 others. For the draft I think I rounded out my team nicely but may have overdrafted BA/speed potentially to the detriment on power/rbis. A bounce back from Chris Davis would be huge for me (and I should be able to stomach his below average BA if he is hitting 35+ HRs).

Bean: Last year I was projected for 9-12th and ended up tieing for first so you could say your looking pretty good. I think that was more a case of Khahan focusing too much on my 11th place from the year before and not enough on how most my team underperformed that year. That said in season managing and injuries to the top teams can easily shake things up.

Did anyone put the results in one of those softwares that aggregates the projected stats? It can be kind of hard to adjust for benches but I would be curious how it looks.

I did have a stat projections software thing going but the file got messed up somehow. If I can get it to work again I will post it. All I remember about it is that my ERA and WHIP were even with Khahan's and K/9 was pretty high so I don't agree with the assessment of my pitching being weak. It all depends on how you value the players. I'm not expecting Carpenter to hit .240 or have only 60 rbi. I let some players go who had higher adp's than a couple players that I kept because I just didn't want them contaminating my team (for example, bily hamilton, j.lamb, m. cabrera, etc.). I think Kershaw, Betts, JD Martinez, S Marte is not bad. Alex Wood wasn't a guy I wanted to let back into the player pool just yet. My 5/6/7 keepers pretty much change every year, as my roster gets turned over quite a bit throughout the season and new valuable players always show up. Anyway, I think my 2018 team should be better than my 2017 team if I avoid repeating things such as kershaw's injury and marte's suspension. I'll accept the 5th to 8th place prediction as a challenge though. No sweat.

Almost forgot, I actually have 4 of the 5 dodgers starting pitchers, and if I could have the 5th one I would. If you're gonna have the full pitching staff of one team, it may as well be the dodgers. I wouldn't want 5 hitters from one team but I don't see an issue with stacking up pitchers as long as they are on a good team.

I second what Bean said. Thorough rundown and I don't know where you find the time! : )

DPR - I dont have a program that I enter all the results into. But I do keep a spreadsheet that I enter my players into as a draft them. I've created fields to figure out overall era/whip/BA. There's a few different formula fields I developed to make plugging the info in relatively quick and easy.

I have my team projected out to:
3.33 era (12), 1.17 whip (12), 1326 K's(7) 82 W (2) and 59 (5) Saves over 1223 IP. I usually stream and pick up replacement closers during the season so those numbers shouldn't represent my end point.

For hitters I only use the players I'm planning on starting so my bench doesn't really come into play. Again its not accurate but more of a floor for my stats:

BA: .273 (7)
Runs: 828 (3)
RBI: 806 (6)
HR: 240 (4)
SB: 149 (12)

The numbers in parenthesis are the points I would have gotten in that category last season just as a gauge for myself to see where I need to focus FA and streaming efforts this year. That is 70 points for a floor for me based on last years standings. Project my IP out to the full 1400 and my K's go to a 12, my wins to 10 and my saves to a 6 for another 14 points or 84 total points. That's a floor of 4th place for me this year.

Unfortunately that's where my time ends. I would actually love to do this for every team's starters but while I have a bit of extra time on my hands I dont have THAT much extra time.

Some of those numbers are really close to my own. Your sheet and my estimates are within 2 of runs, 1 of sb, 3 of rbi's.

I believe the waiver order should be reset please.

Wiggs, you're an original member by the way!

I feel pretty good about my team going into this year. My draft last year was borderline ugly and I was missing my 2nd and 6th picks, but some key in season moves + my keeper hitters of Votto, Blackmon (highest ranked Yahoo hitter last season— pretty wild), Donaldson, and Gordon helped aid me to the title. This year I had all my picks and was happy to pick up Pham in the first round. If he repeats he's a keeper level player. I was bummed to trade him away last season but knew at the time he didn't fit into my top 7. I wanted to focus on SP early and added another long time team member in Tanaka along with McCullers, plus Richards later to round out my staff with Severino + deGrom. Tanaka had issues with the homerun ball in the first half last season but settled down to a have a good second half which was more in line with his career numbers, plus he raised his K/9 to over 9 after taking a couple years off. I am not counting on McCullers and Richards to stay healthy all season but they should be ++ pitchers when they are. Smoak in the 4th round can bust but it was hard to pass on 38 homers with an average that's manageable. Suarez in the 7th round I think has outside keeper potential.

Pumped for Thursday!

Holt
Astade

Blue Hen
NY Studs
Piccolos

What is up with hitting this year? Yes, I know its only been 2 weeks worth of stats. But our league leader in BA only has a .273. You'd think a few guys off to hot starts or a couple of 3 or 4 hit days would boost some averages and some teams are usually still over .300 BA at this point in the season.

Instead we have multiple teams with team BA in the .220's, some in the .230s. Only 2 teams have a team BA in the .260's or above.

Frustating to see how slow a start my hitting is off to. R/BA/SBs are competitive enough or can get there with a couple strong days but HRs/RBI almost look irreparably far behind. Even someone like Bellinger who is off to a decent start is skewing more towards strong BA/R then the categories I need him in. At least my pitching has been dominant to keep my competitive but it will be tough if I cant get to mid table in the power stats.

I thought that by trading so many early draft picks and using 3 roster spots for prospects, albeit uber prospects, that I would be mired in the second division and be battling not to pay for Draftime in 2019. It obviously is way too early, but at least I seem to be competitive this year. Not enough for the podium, but at least competitive. I am writing this right after Acuna hit his 1st MLB HR (420 feet).

QUESTION: Without going to Google, who else knows to what "the second division" refers?
Go ahead, date yourself!!

When MLB had only 2 eight team leagues without divisions, the bottom 4 teams in the AL and NL were referred to as the 2nd division.

I'm looking for a 1st baseman and a closer. Nothing over the top, just guys that wont hurt me in ratios categories. I have Fernando Tatis Jr - uber SS prospect that may get a September call up but should bust out next year. Also have Eduardo Rodriguez fresh off a 3-0 start with 23K's in 22 IP who finally seems to have figured things out.

Interesting trade. With his struggles in AA, is Tatis still expected to be called up this year?

Side note, dropping Barraclough was poorly timed on my part. I really thought they were going to a closer by committee approach and I was worried with how many runners he was putting on base.

Sigh, Santana sucks so I drop him. This is immediately followed by Thames (now my only 1st baseman and I was happy with that) getting hurt and going on the DL. I grab Austin off the waivers and he is facing not only his 4 day suspension but gets the d2d tag. So I trade for a 1st baseman and in between the trade being accepted and this morning - he gets hurt w/ the day to day tag as well.

Tell you what, if you want a 1st baseman to miss some playing time, see that he's traded to me. I'll take it from there.

Hey folks
Hotmail has decided to make changes to their inbox and those changes are not compatible with security protocols on my work computer. Basically I can see the intro to a message but nothing else. Can't open, forward, reply etc. So if I'm suddenly slow in responding to messages its because I really only have time at home in the evenings and can't do it anymore from work. If we're in the middle of trade talks, bear with me.

I sent out a number of trade proposals for draft picks in 2019. Then I took a at the numbers, realized that I had a chance for the podium this season and withdrew them.
My draft was about 2019 and beyond, but Acuna and Buehler are up in the majors and playing well, and my other picks panned out. I just need Vlad, Jr., however unlikely to come up in September.

I made this pitch last year and it made some traction; just not enough.

We should reduce the innings cap. SPs just don't go 200 innings anymore as teams try to limit pitchers working through the lineup a 3rd time and rely more on their bullpens. This requires us to go even deeper into rotations to be able to hit the limit. If you look at the teams now, only 2 teams are on pace to exceed the minimum and the median team is on pace to be over 50 innings behind. And while I like seeing the trade activity we have already seen 4 of the 5 contending teams need to make trades to acquire SPs. This shows where the clear scarcity lies.

As such I would like to repropose reducing the innings cap by 50 innings for next season (with potentially future discussion to bring it down 100).

206 - I'm not against this change, but we are a week shy of a year since the initial vote was called for. We have the same managers as last year. And even though the voting was for no change, 1350, 1300 1250 etc breaking down the choices - no change still had a majority of votes. I'd rather wait until the 2019 discussion to bring this up again.

Maybe if we had a majority wanting a change, but just hadn't agreed on what change to make it would be worth it.

Last year it was called with 5 people voting no change, and 5 voting for a change with 2 votes not in so a majority was still possible. I also think with another year of data continuing to support the change in dynamics in how teams are utilizing the starting pitchers some may reconsider. If not that is fine but I thought it was at least worth discussing to see where people stood.

I also don't think waiting til the offseason if we are considering a change is a good idea. Everyone is active now, not in the offseason. When we were trying to reach a resolution on Ohtani last year we could only get a few people involved and that is with me having to push along the conversation more than I was comfortable with given my desire to use an early pick on him.

Well lets do this. Rather than voting for no change or 3 or 4 different changes lets vote:

A) lower the IP limit

B) leave it as is

If enough vote to change, then we'll discuss where to set it and if we can't agree then we'll leave it as is.
I do think the data supports that we are probably a bit high on the IP limit. Again, last year and multiple years before any manager exceeding the limit either did it in the final few days or brought themselves up to the last day and loaded up with as many pitchers as they can. In other words, the IP limit wasn't having an affect. It wasn't stopping any manager from running out any pitcher they wanted whenever they wanted. As for the last day shenanigans, that will happen no matter what.

I don't think just looking at year end totals tells you much. Anyone looking to contend knows you need to at least end up in the ballpark or you are leaving points on the table due to the high correlation with Ws and IPs. The question is what is needed to be done to get there. Do to SPs generating less IPs than they did years ago, you now need to stream more (or carry a greater number of pitchers) to reach the limit.

I'd be for limiting IP (1350 makes sense). I've been carrying lot of pitchers on my roster all season and I'm still projected at -65 IP. Even with more pitchers than hitters on my roster I can't hit that IP limit without a fair amount of extra streaming.

For this league, the number of IPs isn't a big issue to me. I will follow whaetver the consensus is as long as any change is no more than 100 IPs each season. If you want to go more, gradually get there or it's effect may have unintended consequences.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let y'all know that this will be my last year in DD. I've given it a considerable amount of thought the past few weeks and have come to the conclusion G20 takes up the majority of available time I have to commit to fantasy baseball. I feel like my DD team has suffered as a result. As you all know, fantasy baseball is very demanding (arguably the most demanding fantasy sport out there) and I feel like I can effectively manage only one keeper team. I don't feel like I'm leaving the team in shambles so hopefully someone, with more time to commit, can take the team to it's full potential in the future.

Thank you all for letting me join DD a few years back. It's been an enjoyable experience. I'll see some of y'all in g20.

Best of luck,

Pete

Just a reminder since trading was brought up - trade deadline has obviously passed us by. But once that last game ends, off season trading is up and running. Any off season trades need to be recorded and announced here.

And once, we hit the off season I'll be looking to move Max Scherzer, Lorenzo Cain and one of Albies, Baez, Turner or Machado. These are some pretty steep price tags that will need to include draft picks coming back. But I'm looking to re-vamp my pitching keepers a bit so I'm gladly willing to do 2:1 and 3:1 where you load up your keeper list for a younger, elite pitching keeper and draft pick compensation.

I should finish in 5th place which is much better than I had anticipated at the beginning of the season. My draft and keeper list were targeted for 2019 and beyond. Had I paid attention to SBs in the draft and to catcher ABs during the season, I would have most likely finished in the top 3.
My keeper list sets up nicely for 2019 with new keepers Ronald Acuna, Vlad, Jr. (should get almost a full season from him), and Walker Buehler (should pitch between 180 and 200 innings). Paul Goldsmith and Anthony Rizzo, especially Rizzo, had somewhat off seasons due to slow starts, but will bounce back in 2019. Chris Sale will anchor my pitching stall along with Buehler.
The conundrum will be keeping Kenley Jensen or Michael Conforto. I am not concerned about Jensen's arrhythmia. It is commonplace for this type of problem to come back. He will have another ablation in the off season and be fine. I had Conforto as a keeper, traded him for someone (possibly Jensen), and got him back off of waivers this year when his owner got tired of waiting for him to recover from off season surgery. He now seems to be playing at the level that the Mets had predicted.
Most likely I will keep Conforto, and Jensen will be available for a 1st round draft pick.
Nelson Cruz's 36+ HRs, Mike Moustakas' 26+ HRs, and Mallex Smith's 33+ SB's (picked him up too late to make much of a difference) will be hard to part with, but will be available for draft picks.
My big frustration is in RIBC AAA where I had been in the top 3 ( necessary for promotion to RIBC) for the entire season until this week when I dropped to 4th place. Chris Sale being out for 2 months and my hitters tanking did me in. I still have a chance, but it does not look promising.
Good luck to all down the stretch .
It has been a lot of fun this season.

It has been an frustrating season for me where it seemed all my hitters came out the gate ice cold (and a couple of my keepers never really turned it around). My hitting caught fire post ASB where I have 5 of the 10 hitters in the last month and likely that would hold true if we went back to ASB as well. Yelich and Ohtani(H) performed at levels I wouldn't have thought possible and Bregman took is game to the next level as well giving me excitement for the future. Unfortunately when my pitchers got injured around midseason (top 3 all on DL) I never adjusted to better manage my innings so I likely left ~10 points on the table this season which would have kept be off the podium but not at as large of a step back as it appeared all year.

I am going to have some tough decision this offseason where I feel I have four stud keepers (likely 20 quality) and then am going to have to balance steady performers with upside for the future to round out the list.

Studs:
Bregman
Yelich
Snell
Correa - man what happened..still accomplished so much in earlier seasons and 24. He is the best talent on the left side of HOUs infield.

Safe top 50 keepers
Rendon - Great baseball player whose skills don't all translate to fantasy to get him into the upper tier but he gets it done when healthy.
Diaz - Stud. Do I want to keep a closer? Definitely going quick in the draft it let go.
Merrifield - One of only ~20 players to rank in the top 50 last 2 years. Imagine if he wasn't in the KC wasteland?
Ozuna - The midpoint of the last 2 years is still quite a strong keeper. I think he settles around there with the upside to do what he did two years ago with the reason for this season being his shoulder needing the offseason

Upside Talent:
Bellinger - Where did the power go? Can he adjust back and work on the holes in his swing? 22 and we know what he did last year so tons of potential.
Ohtani - Hitter? Pitcher? Either would project as a top 40-50 player with full time stats but what is he going to turn into? How does the MCL and yahoos treatment of him as 2 players impact things?
Jimenez - Clearly ready for the bigs but subject to the CBA service time manipulation. Will be up early next year and strong chance to turn into a top tier keeper for years to come.
Kopech - For the rebuilding team this was a top pitching prospect in baseball when he was called up. Showed he had figured it out the second half of the year and offers top tier talent (in 2020...)
Darvish - I have no intention of doing it but maybe someone looking for a keeper wants to make a cheap gamble?

Anyone looking to add a player to their keeper list be sure to reach out. I would likely be willing to move any of the guys below the stud tier in the right deal (and really do need to figure out a way to move 2-3). A good trade can help make the decision of who to keep easier for me. The top guys are available of similar tiered players but the default expectation is that I will be holding them.

I'll be looking to move some players for 2019 draft picks. There is no way I can keep all the established, keeper-quality guys I have:

In no particular order, guys who are snap keepers in just about any league and just about team:

Aaron Judge
Manny Machado
Trea Turner
Andrew Benintendi
Javier Baez
Ozzie Albies
Max Scherzer
Corey Kluber
then add in players like
Lorenzo Cain
Stephen Piscotty
Mike Foltynewnichsch (can we update the
Stephen Strasburg

I can only keep 7 and would love to get some value back. I'll look at deals that do 2 things for me - get me younger pitching or get me 2019 draft picks.

I think trading is moving earlier and earlier every year. Becoming a year round season.

ugh, are we to the point of the season that we start picking up SP so other managers can't start them?

I wish someone had picked up Kingham so that I would not have been able to start him.

had a misclick adding hand back to my roster and dropped the wrong guy. Immediately changed it from pannone to dominguez. Just posting here to be clear on what happened. (for john, the new guy, if you have an honest misclick during an add/drop you can contact myself or great one to switch it. we're usually pretty understanding and can easily correct them).

Congratz to Da Bomb for a pretty dominant season. I tried my best up until the Allstar break, but I'm convinved Da Bomb was paying off my players.

Seems like after the Allstar break I couldn't string together more than 2 nights of solid to good stats. I was hanging in there, but slowly losing ground. My team batting average dropped from about .274 at the AS break to .267 today. My HR went from 10-11 points down to 5.5.

Then my team took off for about 1 week again and closed the gap. Then disaster hit. In a 2 week period I saw my whip go from 1.12 to 1.17, my ERA from 3.25 to 3.49 and my 12 points in W's drop to 9. That was all in the first 2 weeks of September. That did me in. A sharp drop off in BA, HR and a big spike in Whip/ERA.

Congratz Da Bomb on another title. Definitely earned it this year.

Congrats DaBomb. Well played. We'll try again next year. Congrats to Khahan as well for the second place finish.

This pretty much sums up my season. My innings pitched leaders:
Kershaw 158.1
A.Wood 148
R.Hill 108.2
T.Skaggs 72.2

It took a lot of scroungy streaming to get to 1400 IP with many a blow-up along the way. Every time I started to make headway in the ERA/WHIP depts there'd be some explosions to knock me back. If I took the time to add up the stats of my one and two start streamers I'm almost positive that their ERA would be closer to 9 than to 3. Ah well. Back to the drawing board next year.

congrats on the win.

i made some deals - including giving up Blake Snell - that i thought would give me a shot - but alas, i never really got close.

that being said, looks like i'll have a pretty sick set of 5 starting (alas, aging) SPs for my keepers.

It's 420 will be keeping (unless you can pry them away)
Freeman
Bryant
Gallo
Clevinger

Others can be had/traded. Since I am just now taking over this team I will be unaware of how important draft picks will be, but also can and will trade those as well. Just shoot me an email with who you like and we can go from there.

Thank you all. This win puts me alone with 5 championships which I wear with pride considering the competition. Nice season again to Khahan who brought it to within a couple points last week before I was able to put some more distance into the league again, and to holt who has podiumed in all but 2 seasons.

A few of my keepers took a step back (Votto, Donaldson, Gary Sanchez, Dee Gordon) but draftees/ FA pickups including Gleyber Torres, Andujar, Haniger, Wheeler, Eugenio Suarez, Treinen) went a long ways to make up that difference. And with Severino, deGrom and Blackmon, I will have some tougher keeper decisions so if you see anything, reach out!

Really interested in making some moves.
keeper list is probably going to be:
turner, machado, benintendi, judge, baez, scherzer, kluber

This means guys like Ozzie Albies, Stephen Strasburg, Lorenzo Cain are available for draft picks. Also willing to package one of my keeper list guys with any number of Albies/Strasburg/Cain for an upgrade and slots.
