Subject: Dirty Dozen 2019

  Posted by: Khahan - [80441414] Mon, Jan 28, 2019, 13:11

Figured this was as good a time as any to get the 2019 discussion thread up and running. Plenty of time yet before pitchers and catchers even report. But we'll get this up so people can post trade talks if need be, post keepers, ask questions, check in, all that good stuff.

The Dirty Dozen League Constitution
Entry Fee = $30 (Due by Opening Day) Fee paid to Great One, I believe he prefers paypal.

Each team will name 7 keepers. To be eligible, the player must appear on your roster on the last day of the prior season.

Keeper Deadline yet to be determined (GO and I need to talk) Draft start will be shortly after deadline.
Any trade or keeper change after that will not be accepted.

Next Day Transactions - Daily/Tomorrow
Waivers - Continual Rolling List

Payouts = $360
1st Place $245
2nd Place $ 75
3rd Place $ 30
Draftime $ 10*

Trade Review
Commish review, will push through in about 24 hours unless anyone raises any questions/concerns. Generally the next morning unless a trade was accepted the evening before.

Categories & Positions
Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util (new)
SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL, DL
Batters Stat Categories: Runs (R), Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), Stolen Bases (SB), Batting Average (AVG)
Pitchers Stat Categories: Wins (W), Saves (SV), Strikeouts (K), Earned Run Average (ERA), (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched (WHIP)

Trade Deadline
Last available date offered by Yahoo (usually about a month before season ends)

* - draftime is typically paid by the last place team and not part of the prize pot.

Ozzie Albies
Stephen Strasburg

Round 3 picks:
Stephen Piscotty
Lorenzo Cain

Round 4 picks:
Mike Foltynwiecz

Round 6 or later:
Dallas Keuchel
Brad Hand
Kirby Yates

If there is a discussion and vote on changing to ESPN this season, I am changing my vote to ESPN. I only play in 2 leagues and like them to be on the same server. RIBC will be on ESPN which is why it is my preference, but I will be fine with Yahoo.

I'm not as opposed to it as I used to be - but espn changed their format this year and even ribc is now discussing the potential of walking away from espn. Very few people have like it from the basketball and the reviews on the baseball side of their site are no better.

I'm throwing out advertisement out there for one of Bean's guys. I think Realmuto's stock took a big leap forward with his trade to Philadelphia. I honestly thought he was being overrated before, but I think his move to Philly justifies him as a solid keeper choice now.
His home/road splits were pretty ugly with his production at the Marlins park not being up to snuff. Move him into a hitter's haven like Philly and keep his road splits where they were and he's due for a big year.

My trade with Goat and the trade between Wiggs and Da Bomb are processed at yahoo. The players should be showing on the proper teams now.

Goat and Wiggs - I had to drop players from your teams to make room for the new guys. If you are thinking of keeping one of the players I dropped, just email me who I should drop instead and I'll them back in.

Any other trades where you are getting more than you are giving away, please note for me who you want dropped.

Also, this is as good a time as any to remind everybody to go into Yahoo - go to your team page and name your keepers in the system. You can update this any time up until I start the season.

I've only picked up 2 more, so 3 total. #1, #3 and #11. But I'm missing my 3rd and 4th round picks.

I still have some decent pieces for rebuilding teams (folty for example or piscotty) who can be had relatively cheap. And for any contenders who like o start with closers on their rosters I have LeClerc and yates left for a draft pick up grade. Nothing high end needed for them.

IMPORTANT DATES

Keepers Due by:
Sunday March 10th at 11:59pm EST, date stamp by on this website

Draft begins: Tuesday March 12 at 8am EST

Again, we have a very wide spread of time zones in this league. Please be aware of that when making picks. What is 1 pm for most of us, is 10am for some and 1am for others

As soon as I get the tie breaker info from GO and he sets up the draft at draftime I'll get us all organized.

Loki - I think as usual, most will start posting their keeper lists in the next few days. We usually have a good idea of keepers in the week leading up to declaration so we'll have that time needed.

I'll even kick things off:
Khahan's Keepers

Max Scherzer
Corey Kluber
Manny Machado
Trea Turner
Javier Baez
Andrew Benintendi
Aaron Judge

GO - I do really need you to go to draftime and renew the draft for 2019 and set me as admin so I can set up the draft (this is time consuming due to the tie and flip flopping order) and start entering keepers as they roll in. I absolutely cannot have this wait until the last minute due to my schedule this year. 4 days a week my day are 13 hours long right now and I need to be able to do this and 8 men out over the next week or so.

Hey I have been busy the last few weeks and it looks like I have missed out on getting some trades done. Anyways hopefully there are still people looking to pick up a keeper or 2 as I have probably 8-12 guys who would go in the top 84 if we were to start today.

After my top 4 any of the rest would be available for the right draft picks or could be combined in a 2:1, including with my top 4(Bregman,Correa,Yelich,Snell).

That leaves:
Bellinger
Eloy Jimenez

Ohtani
Edwin Diaz

Astade - could you post what time zone you are in and what the difference from EST is?

managers picking around Astade - keep in mind his extreme time difference. The middle of the day for us is the middle of the night for him. We'll work with the clock to accommodate that time difference.

For the draft, I'm putting together my list and draft sheets. While I am pretty sure I know who I'm taking first, dont keep checking throughout Monday. I wont be making my pick until Monday evening to give people time to work on their charts without feeling pressured.

As stated above, we'll start the draft clock Wednesday morning at 8am.

I’m in the UTC+7 time zone, so I’m 11 hours ahead of EST.

I will try to do better this year and start leaving queues for my picks starting this Wednesday. Thanks.

Queues empty. Barring traded picks, it looks like GO picks right after you in each round. So Great One, if Astade times out and its like 5pm for us, shoot me an email and I can stop the clock the running. That means Astade timed out during his regular sleeping hours. our clock is set to accommodate nighttime sleeping - no reason Astade shouldn't get the same courtesy.

Do we have a plan for treatment of the mariners/As games if we have not completed drafting? It seems like it could be tight.

Also does the clock start tomorrow morning or Wednesday. I see both.

Post 80 - DPR

Yahoo is handling this for us. From the league home page (its in a box w/ commish info not sure if you guys see it):

Drafts completed prior to March 20th will include all games taking place in Japan at the beginning of the regular season. If you do not wish to include those games you will need to draft between March 20th and March 27th. This will allow you to begin your season during week 1 but exclude the games in Japan. If you draft after March 27th, your season will begin April 8th, which is the start of week 2. You can find additional information here: Week 1 scoring deadlines

So, if we finish before those games start, they count. If not, they dont. Yahoo isn't giving us the choice to back date stats.

Holy cow you have 3 1st rd picks Khahan? I usually only expect to get a 5th rounder if I'm moving spare parts. 3rd rd maybe.

Just for the sake of discussion regarding the value of players right before the keeper deadline, there was no way you were keeping any of those guys. Your trading partners may have over-estimated how much value they had to you. I'm willing to bet that you would have taken 4th rd picks for them. Even a 7th rd pick is an upgrade compared to getting nothing at all.

My value isn't what was important. The value to the team receiving them is whats important.

Now to sweeten the pot and to your point of what I would take for them - I moved Brad Hand with Ozzie Albies for a round 1 pick (1st overall) and this netted me Carlos Carrasco who I would not have gotten otherwise.

I moved Strasburg and Lorenzo Cain in the same deal for pick 1.3 and only got a few round upgrade because I sent my round 4 back.

But I also did not hide my intentions to move these guys for round 1 picks. Post 1 in this thread and multiple posts in the 2018 thread are me advertising they are available.

I would tend to agree that they were overpays especially for how high in the draft they were. There is always some top talent put back in the draft so those aren't picks in the 80 but put picks in the 40s and 50s. In fact, I think you can argue the players you were able to select with those draft picks are more valuable than the ones trades away and that is without giving up keeper slot which holds a ton of value as well.

the flipside is that the first two picks off the board were players i couldnt keep and no one would trade for - carrasco ranked higher than any of the above 3, and abreu in the ballpark...

I traded Ozzie Albies and Brad Hand for Carlos Carrasco.
In Yahoo Albies is pre-season adp at 55. Brad Hand at 92
Carlos Carrasco is 36.
Last year, end of year, Carrasco was 43 and Albies was 54 and Brad Hand was 71.

Based on last seasons value and expected value, this trade didn't end up all that far off.

Who I netted with the 1st pick was luck of the draw based on other managers decisions. I certainly didn't expect a top 40 listed player to be available. That just made it all the better for me. I ended up with a slightly better trade in terms of value but I just as easily could have ended up slightly worse. I dont think the value is really that far off in the trade, but I'm definitely more than happy to net Carlos Carrasco and far better off than if I made no trades at all. For me, because regardless of who I draft, its a win. Carrasco just made it more of a win.

I also think both Wiggs and Goatlocker upgraded their keeper lists by adding these players (though I'm not a fan of keeping closers, I've made no bones about that, but its not my list. Albies was a big upgrade). So for them its also a win. We didn't know Carrasco would be available when the trades were made. If so, perhaps Goat doesn't deal the #1 overall pick. But that trade was made almost a month ago. Right up until Tree posted his keeper list I dont think anybody in this league expected Carrasco to be available. Can't blame me for luck increasing a trade's value after the fact.

As far as value goes - this league keeps 84 players. Albies is ranked high enough that he is a keeper on probably 10/12 teams. Just because he's not a keeper on my team doesn't dimish his value, either. Same thing goes for Cain (ranked 46 pre-season) and Stephen Strasburg (ranked 67). Both are keeper viable on at least half of the lists in this league.

You can ask Wiggs and goat both - none of the discussions were push overs on either side. We both went back and forth with a few offers and counter offers before settling on these deals. I gave up far more to Wiggs in terms of value than I got back (essentially traded Strasburg, Lorenzo Cain and a player to be named for Edwin Diaz) but I still am better off for having made the trade. And so is Wiggs.

Are you guys truly upset over the perceived values of the trades or is more you felt there was a bit of an overpay and are just musing?

Not upset at all, just fantasy baseball musing. Trying to figure out what players are really worth right before a keeper deadline.

In a case like this:

- no bidding war

- they lose guys that they would have kept, so they probably upgrade one roster slot while downgrading another (fwiw, I don't know what the rest of their rosters look like)

- similar players, as far as adp goes, could have been had for a lower price elsewhere (pretty sure I would have flipped Paxton or Chapman or Carpenter or anyone in that 50-60'ish adp range for a 4th rd or maybe lower if anyone had wanted to do that. I know I would have flipped S Marte for a 1st without hesitation. It's like gaining an extra keeper slot.

I've never had much luck (that I remember) getting any interest on any deals before the keeper slot deadline so I barely try anymore. Most of us list our leftovers just in case but it rarely leads to anything.

Not being critical of you at all. You spun those players into essentially two extra keeper slots this season. Next season I need to make more of an effort in advertising the prices of all my players to everyone.

Just to defend myself on my side of the trade-
I took over an absolutely terrible team last season, I made a couple trades last year to try to get out of the mess that I was left and was able to acquire Berrios, hopefully a long term keeper for me. That left me with
Story- easy keeper
Berrios- easy keeper
Pollack- questionable keeper
Devers- questionable keeper
Mikolas- questionable keeper
and a bunch of crap in
Puig, villar, encarnacion and McCutchen

Therefore I made a trade to acquire a young 3b, long term keeper in Andujar and still needed 2 more keepers. Khahan offered me a 2 player for a pick trade and while we were talking out the details Albies was traded. I got a top 50 OF and a good pitcher out of a trade for the 3 overall pick which I did not expect there to be alot of talent available. This league keeps 84 players, my expectation was no one above 70 would be available, therefore I bumped up my team quite a bit. I was also able to get a 4 pick in return. My guess is if a trade was made for stratsberg, cain and whoever I get with that 4th for Diaz I will be making out better.

Also to defend myself i posted on Feb 13th that I was in desperate need of keepers and only Khahan and DB sent any offers. Trees 1st post on the forum was the 24th after the trades have been made.

I feel like I was put in a terrible spot in this league because I took over a team with no keepers and am forced to make trades to be competitive

My first advertisement for keepers to trade went up last year on September 21.
Posted again in January and again Feb 1.
I simply didn't want to wait until the keeper deadline frenzy this year. I thought I had some of the most valuable assets on the market and wanted to move them before people looking moved their own resources for other players.

I agree with what Holt says with regard to musing as opposed to anger as well as general comments regarding the trade. I am going to debate the merits of the trade more for the intellectual exercise than to give people a hard time, so I hope I am not found offensive. I do applaud the effort to rebuild the teams do want to see more managers making those efforts.

I think people are understating the value left over in the first half of the draft. There is almost always a top 50 player plus a couple more in the top 60-70 especially if you balance keeper ranks with redraft ranks. I also think people are not accounting for the value of giving up the keeper spot. Wiggs in his justification highlights this by not including that opportunity cost ("My guess is if a trade was made for strasberg, cain and whoever I get with that 4th for Diaz I will be making out better"). You would need to put the alternative players kept on Wiggs side (Mikolas who just went in one of the first few picks and ??).

I would also agree that there would have been more players available which could have resulted in cheaper prices. Holt mentioned 3 and I also had 3 players go in the first 8 picks who I was very vocal about shopping and were all much younger than the acquired players (plus I made Bellinger available: albeit that would have required a similar price).

I am going to follow up later as I do think we should do some rethinking on how to handle offseason trading. It seems to be more in the nature of rich getting richer than the poor being able to catch up (I have been a big beneficiary of this myself as I traded Devers-EE for 1.1 in last years draft and got yelich.)

93: Likely not. It is definitely an impressive list. I would say give him the title, especially with the extra picks but the closest keeper list is likely Khahan last year with the same list with Strasburg instead of Baez and he still didn't win despite picking Baez and Albies in the middle rounds (maybe the 2 best picks of the draft, definitely Baez).

I'm making great trades, drafting really well. I do really well managing early season. Seems like my achilles heel every year is September. Da Bomb definitely out-managed me the last month and a half of 2018.

As for strength of teams - remember a few years back my team was an absolute joke. I was struggling to stay out of the basement for 2-3 years there.

I decided to go into full blown rebuild. I focused 2 drafts in a row on 2 things - young players with potential and players with high trade value (closers, aging stars with some punch left) If he was a 'solid keeper pick' the kind of player who would make some lists and not others, who was 29+ I avoided them, even if they were a good value. I used my draft to develop long term value.

In 2014 I drafted both Christian Yelich and Francisco Lindor and kept Billy Hamilton. In 2015 I took a chance on a 3rd baseman coming off 2 knee surgeries and have never looked back on owning Machado. I also grabbed Jacob DeGrom and Javier Baez that year and had yelich on my keeper list. In 2017 with my last pick i took a flyer on some Yankees outfielder named Aaron Judge and the pick before that I took Jose Berrios.

I had some big misses as well - one year I took Billy Butler round 1 pick 1 and was excited. Went after guys like Greg Bird and an over attachment to Kole Calhoun. Throwing back guys like Baez and Yelich and Lindor were not the smartest moves. And thru all of this I have probably been the most active trader in the league. I've traded for Max Scherzer, Trea Turner and Corey Kluber. I've traded away names like DeGrom, Yoan Moncada, Strasburg, Albies, Dee Gordon.

I dont look at me as a case of the rich get richer. I look at my past 5 years as working hard to build an empire. Now I have to A) keep it together and B) get an actual title to show for all my hard work. Some managers I dont think will necessarily succeed this way. Da bomb and Holt for example are 2 of the best in-season managers I've seen in any league. They succeed by solid value drafts and great in season managing. I think a few other managers have tried this method to rebuild, but only half heartedly. They trade a lot. Or they draft young players, but not both. Out of my 7 keepers, 4 were drafted and 3 were traded for.

I think some managers need to just mentally throw away the idea of competing for a year or two and truly focus on 2021/22. Look at what Loki is doing with Acuna and Vlad. He laid the groundwork for that list in the 2017 season and earlier. You want an impressive keeper list this year - his is pretty darned scary.

Khahan,

I think I have approached building my team in a similar way and agree more teams should take the long term view. I took over a team in 2010 in need of a makeover and prioritized young talent and fliers until I had built a strong enough core. I had my bumps and bruises (selected Heyward 1.1 as my first pick/traded C Sale) but in general played for enough upside that I could build a team that could contend a few years later. Similar to you I think I more excel at the team building aspects then the in season management which would describe why I have inconsistent results the last few years despite a top tier keeper list. I also have a tendency to refocus on the long term if my team is off to a slow start.

That said, my comment on the rich getting richer comes from experience. I know that if I send out enough emails I can entice someone to give up draft picks for my leftovers. And maybe we can find a middle ground so that both managers benefit. But take your recent first round picks; those can be presumed to have strong seasons and be offered picks next year as they would have a hard time cracking your top 7. The cycle continues.

I am not faulting you. It is certainly allowed and can be considered good active management. I just wonder if it is in the best interest of league parity. However, maybe this is just sour grapes because I had less time this year and didn't fire off as many emails.

I am thinking for this league I might propose a little 5 questions after the draft. Not a pick by pick rationale as thats a bit much. But it used to be nice getting those write ups post draft (barilko?!).... participation optional of course.

Need to brainstorm some good questions... favorite or least favorite pick, general strategy, favorite other team, steal of the draft, biggest need i.e. what you are looking for in a trade...

Please do NOT MAKE ANY WAIVER CLAIMS. GO and I are literally unable to edit waiver priority until the first waiver period passes. That may be stupidest thing Yahoo has ever decided. please cancel all waiver claims. Once we are able to set the waiver priority, we will set it to the proper order and and put everybody back on waivers.
Any waiver claims made will be undone before this process so save us all some work and headaches and please cancel any waiver claims you have.
Yahoo is stupid. that is all.

Also, dpr, hopefully I'll have some time soon to do the write up, but spring break ended last week so I'm back to night school on top of full time work.

Lets just steal from RIBC with slight tweaks for keeper stuff..

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft and with keeper selection? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. What is your biggest hole right now? anyone on the trade block to fix it? Get those trade talks flowing.

Quite simply - win this year. I had made a handful of trades which netted me great round 1 picks but was in kind of a dead zone for the very important early-mid round picks (3-5). I wanted to use those first 4 picks I had in rounds 1 and 2 to start filling in empty spots that keepers didn't quite reach then it was a 'wait and see approach' for who is available. But I also wanted to get my pitching younger.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
Having Carlos Carrasco available with the #1 was absolutely humunguous and I loved it. I also really like my Puig pick as I think he's in for the year we've always expected from him. As far as do over picks - Bo Bichette in r10. This pick simply put, doesn't fit my goals for this year.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

DPR's team looks very well rounded as does Loki's team. Da Bomb will also be a force to be reckoned with this year, again.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Justin Smoak sitting out there until round 16. But honestly, I've drafted with you guys in this league and other leagues going back some 13 years. I think its tough to surprise any of us.

5. What is your biggest hole right now? anyone on the trade block to fix it? Get those trade talks flowing.
Biggest hole? I asked my wife that question and got knocked flat on my butt!!

I honestly dont know that I have any major holes looking at this season. The back end of my pitching is questionable, possessing the talent to crash and burn or all be keeper worthy. But even if they crash and burn, having Scherzer, Kluber and Carrasco holding down the front 3 spots should mean I'm set for pitching.

Khahan's draft analysis. As always I hope anything nice I have to say comes true and any negatives are either proven wrong or taken as a critique to improve.

Goatlocker Last year finish 12th. This year expected finish 10-12
Keeper Grade: B
Any keeper list that includes Kris Bryant and Freddie Freeman is off to a good start. Add in Ozzie Albies (which he did) Mike Clevinger and Patrick Corbin and you've got 5/7 very good quality keepers. Gallo is a huge power source but an absolute liability in BA and SB. And as I've discussed before, maybe Hand is a viable keeper, maybe not. Its a personal call for me that in a keep 84 league I'm not keeping any closers.

draft grade: B-
Goat did what a lot of managers do. he drafted for this year. Unfortunately I think this is the wrong strategy for him. He certainly started off strong nabbing the speed of Mallex Smith to compliment the power from his keepers.
But drafting aging players like Edwin Encarnacion (especially when he already has Freeman), John Lester, Brandon Belt, Rick Porcello - I think its the wrong strategy. I do like the late round Ryan Mcmahon pick though. A few picks where he went young prospect like that and he's ready to compete in 2020.

Perm Dudes Last year finish 11th Expected finish 10-12
Keeper list: B (an A on pitchers, a C on hitters)
Zack Greinke is your 3rd best pitcher and we haven't even drafted anybody yet? Yikes - thats a scary staff. His hitters are meh. Peralta is a pretty fine choice. I think Upton is on the wrong end of the aging curve for a rebuilding team as is Turner. Hicks surprised me last year w/ his Hr power. He's probably just fine but is also older than people realize (I think he's 29 already?).
Draft: B
This is a real mixed bag. Kemp wont do anything long term, but as a last round pick he's ok. Jon Gray is scary as a pitcher, Tanner Roark may not be fantasy relevant, carlos Santana is a bit long in the tooth for a rebuild. Gregory Polanco has seen better days and may not get much better than he's been the past 2 years. On the flip side, Haniger is a great pick and gives a youth boost to his OF, Abreu is a consistent source of 1st stats if not aging a bit, Tim Anderson has solid power/speed combo and room to grow at his age, Domingo Santana in r 14 may be one of the best value picks in the draft. Adam Frazier as a late round flier could pay off. Cole Hamels is a fine addition to his top 3 pitchers. He could do fine in the power department but his BA is going to take a beating and he's lacking any real speed threat. His points this year will come from pitching.

Wiggs Last year finish 10 expected finish this year 6-9
Keeper Grade: A
Wiggs threw caution to the wind with his draft picks this year to build a better keeper list and it paid off. He upgraded a few slots to younger guys and seems to be building towards the future. The keepers themselves I initially rated a B+ but looking at the bigger picture and a stronger commitment to a rebuild, his list reflects this strategy.

Draft: A
Wiggs went for it this year. By "it" I dont mean trying to win it all. He finally seems to have embraced going for a full out rebuild. He'll have some misses and disappointments. Its the nature of the rebuild game. But if he gets even 1 star out of this crop, its good. And while he's doing that, I think he actually improved his team from last year from a competitive standpoint. He's got the following stable of young guys from the draft who could potentially break out into stars and be the building blocks of a phenomenal keeper list: Eddie Rosario, Nomar Mazara (24 yrs old!), Fernando Tatis Jr, Stephen Piscotty, Alex Reyes, Francisco Mejia, Julio Urias, Harrison Bader, Brendan Rodgers, Lucas Giolito. With that many what are the chances they are all misses and he walks away from 2019 without an improved keeper list for 2020? Very, very , very low. Look at Wiggs this off season when has a young list of Devers, Story, Berrios, Strasburg, Andujar and whoever breaks out from his 2019 draft and lots of managers will be jealous and ready to make trades. Plus with 2 good young 3rd basemen he's got some trading material. He's also my dark horse candidate this year for a podium finish.

Astade Last season 9th This season expected finish 6-8
Keeper Grade: A
Look at that list. Jose Altuve may not even be the best player on it. And Nick Castellanos is your worst? Now thats a list of keepers. Cause Nick Castellanos as your worst keeper says a lot about the quality of you guys. And he kept all the right players from last season.
Draft Grade: B+
2 names stick out to me as key picks in his draft - his hitting will rise and fall on Matt Carpenter. Carpenter could be a big stabilizing force for his BA and contribute a ton of HR like last year. Or he could finally hit that wall and drain. Josh James on pitching. A highly touted prospected who could be this year's Walker Buehler. Though thru ST it seems more like he's going to be Tyler Glasnow this season. Thats not good for this season but he's young and developing and will have a bright future. Tons of power on this team. Decent amount of speed. BA may suffer a bit and pitching is nice at the top, questionable in the middle and lacking at the bottom. But he'll have a hard time competing with me, PD, Tree, and DPR. I'm honestly not sure what to make of Astade's team. He's got a great keeper list and he did well in the draft. He doesn't have any gaping holes but when I eyeball test, he falls short of teams stacked in one area or another. He's kind of a jack of all trades, doing everything good but nothing great which makes him tough to grade. If he has a guy or two break out and suddenly does 1 or 2 things great - he's a dangerous team

Great One Last Season 8th expected finish this season ??
Keeper Grade: B+ Harper, Hoskins, Arenado and he doesn't get an A? Taillon k/9 seems pretty low to be the real fantasy star some think he can be. Seager is a power hitting SS coming off a wrist injury at a position where he's not even a top 5 player any longer because its so stacked. I think Muncy over any of those guys was a better choice. He's got good quality keepers but I would have made some different choices.

Draft Grade: B
Here's why GO is only a B despite a solid draft - I cant tell if he thinks he's competitive this year and spent too many picks on young guys or if he thinks he needs to rebuild and spent too many picks on guys for this year. He did steal Cano from me in the 5th and Whitley in the 7th. I also can't really tell where to expect him to finish this year. He has some names and potentials on this list that could have him hefting a trophy at the end of the year. He has some players who need to bounce back or show potential that if they fail in that could have GO wondering wth he was doing at the end of the year. I refuse to try to place GO in the standings. Just refuse. I really mean it. No matter where Go finishes from first to last I wont be surprised.

Bean Last season 7th Expected finish this season 4-6
Keeper Grade: B-
His top kept pitcher is Kyle Freeland. Freeland is a fine pitcher, but the anchor to a staff? A nice shot at wins and a solid era is offset by a low K/9 and a high whip. He could be a FA in this league before the Allstar break. But Bean's other best option for a 7th keeper was Billy Hamilton. He's got monstrous power upside with Davis, Stanton and Aguilar so more speed wouldn't be bad. But he's already putting himself in a hole with BA with those 3. Adding Billy Hamilton to further dig in on BA was probably the right choice. But I think Bean could have picked up a better 7th keeper on the cheap with a trade for a mid round pick.

Draft Grade: B+
Bean recognized the hole in his team with only 1 pitcher on his keeper list. His first 4 picks are an up and coming young pitcher (that I honestly hoped would fall to me at 1.11) followed by David Price who I think at this point in his career is severely underrated. That is a nice boost to his pitching staff. He then follows up 3 of the next 4picks with great closers. He started out great with his pitching. On the hitting side he scored well with Ender Enciarte - a young potential keeper quality player with speed and BA which his team needs. But Wil Myers is annually on my 'do not draft list' I just dont see how batting .250 or less each year is sustainable for a 20/20 season. Though he keeps proving me wrong (I wont hold 2018 against him since he only had 300 or so AB). Bean is setting the bar in the power department (HR and rbi). He'll be competitive in steals. He'll do very solid and be competitive in Saves. K's, BA and possibly runs will be his downfall and era/whip are kind of up in the air. He may be middle of the pack. I want to give him an A because honestly he did an awesome job of giving himself a competitive team on paper in the draft. But at the same time, I think a year to focus on a better keeper list and shooting for competitiveness in 2020 was called for. He's right on that b/a borderline. I think if I felt he found a way to force himself into the top 3 conversation he'd be an A- or A grade. But overall an excellent draft.

Homerunners/DPR Last season 6th Expected finish this season: 1-3
Keeper Grade: A
Having 1 pitcher on the list, he falls short of a more well rounded list for an A+. But at the same time, his keepers are all top notch. He's one of the few guys with all players on his keeper list being in the top 50 ADP going into the season. He's got power, speed, BA, sexy names, an ace for a SP. We keep 84 players in this league. DPR is one of the reasons a few managers can't have the shiniest of the shiny toys, because they are all hoarded here.
Draft Grade: B+
He needed pitching and came out of the gate. Wheeler is on my list of pitchers to grade in mid rounds so I'm not knocking DPR taking him. But 7th overall I think was a bit of reach. Of course I had Domingo German queued up for my round 2 pick. I almost took Garrett Hampson in round 7 but decided on a pitcher there (which I may not have felt I needed had I gotten German in the 2nd) and he snatched him away. Donaldson in the 3rd should be a great value pick. But then he has some players I simply have no faith in: Brantley in the 4th. Luis Castillo in the 5th. Braun, Skaggs, Tucker. He has a strong enough set of starters to compete but I think his bench could be his downfall if injuries hit.

Tree Last season T4 Expected finish this season 4-6
Keeper Grade: B+
Tree could have easily had an A or A+. But I will never understand keeping closers in a keep 84 league. Especially 2nd tier closer like Osuna and especially when you have a SP like Carlos Carrasco that you are throwing back. Was he wrong for what he did? I dont know. Like I've said before - my aversion to a closer as a keeper is a personal opinion and a personal strategic decision.

Draft Grade: A- Tree makes some really strong picks thru the first 6 rounds. Schwarber I think is an over hyped trap. He's on a crowded team fighting for playing time. He was as smidge over 400 AB in 2018 and is projected to be just shy of 400 in 2019. Elvis Andrus is another who's star has faded. Not much else SS wise was taken after Andrus but I think any of the next 4-5 SP taken would have been better. Still 2 picks is hardly a bad draft. He could have done better with his pitching which I think will be his downfall and keep him out of top 3 contention this year. Despite his top 2.

Loki Last season T4 Expected finish this season 3-5
Keeper Grade: A- Personally I would have kept Mallex Smith or Michael Conforto over Kenley Jensen. See at least 3 other comments above on closers!! hah
Still, even with a closer on there, this is an excellent keeper list. Vlad should hit the big leagues this year and if he delivers on expectations, Loki has a beast of a team with Acuna, Vlad and Buehler for years to come.

Draft Grade: B-
He went into the draft with 2 strong SP but didn't follow up with the best crop of choices. He'll put up solid numbers in the SP categories. But he enters the draft with one of the stronger keeper lists and after the draft I feel he's middle of the pack. He's weak in Saves and on the hitting side doesn't have enough speed to put up competitive numbers with the top 4 teams or so in those categories. The saves and some of the pitching stats of course are easy enough to manager in season but I dont consider that in my draft analysis. Strong power, middle of the pack speed, solid BA, runs/rbi's and middle of the pack pitching would seem to put him around the 5-8 range. But when I look at projected finish - thats where I kind of take into account potential in season management. Loki has a very real chance at a podium finish. I have to downgrade my draft grade for him because I think he left too many holes. But I've seen him manage in season for a long time now and he'll compensate there.

Holt Last season 3rd Expected finish this season: 3-5
Keeper grade: B+
The sheer strength and quality of his hitting keepers is something to hold in awe. But I've never been a fan of Paxton personally. And going into the keeper deadline it was known Kershaw wasn't 100%. He was hurt and missing a chunk of the season. His pitching keepers a bit suspect. With Betts, Mondesi and Marte he had a nice solid start on speed. With Betts, Martinez, Marte, Dahl he is setting himself up to be competitive in power. None of his keepers are a drain on BA.

Draft Grade: B+
I really like Strahm. In fact I had 2 players queued up for the 9th - Piscotty and Strahm. But if he's the best or 2nd best healthy pitcher on your team it doesn't stir up a lot of confidence in your pitching. Its hard to argue with Darvish in the 4th - solid value pick. But with a suspect set of pitchers ahead of that I think if I'm Holt I'm avoiding somebody with Darvish's injury history. He'll do fine in closers, great in hitting. W's, K's and era/whip may be tough. His draft puts him, in my eyes, in the 5-7 range, but his in season abilities definitely bump him up. Still I'm worried enough about his SP that I'm not sure 1st or 2nd are within reach unless some of his young 'take a chance on players' hit grand slams.

Khahan Last season 2nd This season expected: 1-3
Keeper List: A+
I dont have a single player ranked outside of the top 25 ADP on my keeper list. It was so strong coming into the keeper deadline that I had multiple players ranked in the 40's who weren't even in sniffing distance of making my keeper list. Judge, Baez and Machado should be money for 90+ HR. Benintendi, Baez and Turner should be an easy 80 SB and Judge/Machado between them can add probably 15 more. Scherzer is the top ranked pitcher going into the season and has shown no signs of slowing down and Kluber is probably my 'worst' keeper.

Draft: B+
Carlos Carrasco, a top 35 ranked player was sitting right there for me. Edwin Diaz projects out to more K's than some SP. I'm not sold on Olsen in the 2nd (and not just because of his injury). I felt a lot of pressure from myself to nab a young, keeper worthy 1st baseman. He's project out to 30+HR but his BA - ewww. And Bo Bichette in the 10th was a mistake pick. But after my keepers and my draft here are my projected team stats (not counting wellington castillo and missing 1 util player and not counting Touki Toussaint or Domingo German because I couldn't find projection sites that had projections for them as starters:
runs: 755 RBI: 759 HR: 243 SB: 126 BA: .270
IP 1034 K's: 1244 W: 70 S: 101 ERA: 3.26 Whip: 1.09
In my mind, those are the floors for my various stats. Adjust them out for the 2 hitters and 2 pitchers and I'm looking at around 103 total points. That's a tall order to fill.

Da Bomb Last season 1st expected finish this season: 1-3
Keeper Grade: B+ Severino starting the season hurt. Gary Sanchez. These 2 hurt a bit I think. But its a strong overall crop of keepers that will produce lots of points

Draft Grade: A-
No real missteps in his draft. No super high value picks. Just solid all around drafting. His picks fill up the stat sheet, which ultimately, is what wins this. And we've all seen Da Bomb out manage the entire league in the last month of the season.

I am fairly certain I currently lead the league in guys with red N/A DTD etc next to their names. I have risk all over the place. So agree impossible to project anything. Knebel/Kimbrell thing might actually resolve itself so we will see.

But I was focused on getting my core younger and do think i accomplished that. With Eloy, Senzel, Whitley.

Taillon is absolutely loved my a new set of experts who i am getting info from. So they guided that selection.

GO, I agree. Thats how I perceived your draft with the guys you mentioned plus Seager. Thats a solid group of highly ranked prospects that can join Harper, Arenado and Hoskins in a year or 2 as a top keeper list.

Gordon/Madbum/Archer and Cano offer fringe keeper upside with bouncebacks but also could, along with the closers you targeted be great trade assets. CMart and Ohtani were discounted due to injuries. Overall I really like it.

You did what Wiggs is working on but more consistently I think throughout the draft and with the players you kept (Strasburg is 30 btw with a lot of miles btw)

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft and with keeper selection? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I didnt have a precise plan but I knew I was looking to contend and that I was a bit behind going into the draft on the pitching side. I also always like to mix in some young talent to keep building for the future. I am not opposed to waiting on OF as we only play 3 so depth is available on the wire and I have 2 infielders I can slide to OF. League depth in the OF is thinning though.

I feel like I hit on all points drafting pitching early and some upside guys later in the draft as well. I took more SP than anyone I think, and while many will flame out hopefully an equal number breakout. I also like the young players I got as they are a bit closer to contributing then I have went with in the oast with both Hampson and Alonso starting in the majors. Playing time is still a bit of a question but both offer plenty of upside. Hampson in particular with his running ability and the colorado offense is someone I am excited about if given the at bats.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

I just referenced some above but on the negative side I feel like my starting pitching is a bit too risky and all have higher whips. Other than obviously having another stud I wish I picked a pitcher or two who was a bit more extablished. That said I have several with Ace (or SP2) potential.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Khahan with his keeper list and bevy of first round picks is obviously the heavy favorite. That said I think he opened the door a bit with his drafting after the first round outside of the closer picks. He has alluded to this himself a few times but it still looks like a draft of someone who isnt focused on this year. With the keeper list he has he is the favorite next year as well, no need to try to pick up more upside possible keepers.

As mentioned in the post above I think GO also set himself up for a great 1-2 year rebound and think he will get back to the podium in short order. Not this year though.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Not sure really

5. What is your biggest hole right now? anyone on the trade block to fix it? Get those trade talks flowing.

I think it is starting pitching and power. I have a lot of toolsy guys who will contribute across the categories but don't have anyone projected for 35+ homers. Correa and Bellinger both have the upside so breakouts there (or returns to 2017) would be huge. Absent that (or maybe regardless) a power bat at 1b/OF would be very helpful. Closers are always interesting too.

At this point I would likely be offering draft picks. I likely will have excess 3b (Infielders in general) but I find it hard to trade and shake things up too much when dont know where things stand

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft and with keeper selection? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
I think my keepers are pretty solid but I’m upset that I didn’t identify that I had 4 keeper-worthy OFer’s earlier in the offseason. I should have traded at least one of them because going into the draft. With that many outfielders, it handcuffs you at the position and you’re less inclined to draft value picks along the way.
I’m playing for 2-3 years out so I wanted to get high potential players that are still in their 20’s. I believe I achieved my goal and hopefully 1-2 will turn into keepers. I’m really happy with the position flexibility I have with my hitters; 3-1B, 6(!!)-2B, 3-SS, 4-3B and I hope that allows me to rotate as needed to deal with injuries, slumps, etc without having to scour the waiver wire.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
I should have paid more attention to who still had a hole at the Catcher position and taken Welington Castillo ahead of Khahan. I think that was an excellent value pick.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
As I stated at the beginning of the draft. Khahan has the best set of keepers I’ve seen ever. With his great draft picks, I think we are all playing for 2nd place.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
How many starting pitchers were taken. Personally, I like to play some matchups and find SP’s that are hot for 2-4 weeks and pick them up on the WW so drafting a lot of SP’s seems unnecessary (sorry DPR).
I know RP was a bit thin this year but solid setup men/closers were available later than I remember in previous years’ drafts.

5. What is your biggest hole right now? anyone on the trade block to fix it? Get those trade talks flowing.
I think Wacha, James and Wood all have potential but they have too many question marks to get me through this year on the pitching front. I’ll have to watch them carefully at the beginning of the year and likely move on from 1-2 of them.

Some optimism for the league: Yes Khahan’s keepers are super and adding Carrasco in the draft was annoying, but 6/7 keepers are the same as last year and he added Baez, Cain, and Albies in that draft, yet I won the league by a safe margin. It is a long season and I wouldn’t be so quick to say we are playing for 2nd. I certainly am not.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft and with keeper selection? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
I needed to get younger as my squad was aging with the likes of Buster Posey and just needed to be reshuffled. Eloy, Senzel, Whitley have me on the right track. And then I supplemented that risk with later picks of reliable non-keeper vets like Cano.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
I took Kimbrel with my extra pick, but if he doesn't sign soon I might wish I had a do over.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)? Khahan the favorite. I love IF - so I love dpr's options there more than anybody.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
I was shocked to get Eloy halfway into the 1st. Pleasantly shocked.

5. What is your biggest hole right now? anyone on the trade block to fix it?
Need some more pitching. Currently have some good offers of pitchers for Hoskins... this is probably the simplest way to realign where I'd like to be.

Dirty Dozen 2019 Analysis

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft and with keeper selection? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
I planned for 2019 with my 2017 draft when I picked up Acuna, Vlad, Jr. and Buehler. In fact I believe that DaBomb in his analysis (or someone else) said that they would see me in 2020. These young players matured sooner than expected, and along with a good draft, I was competitive for the podium last year until fading in the last month of the season.
There was no decision making in keeping Rizzo, Goldsmith and Sale.
I had to decide between Jansen, Conforto and to a lesser extent Maalex Smith.
I liked Conforto best of the three. Living in the NY area it was easy to ascertain that the first ¾ of 2018 were attributable to Conforto coming back too soon from his shoulder injury, and that the end of the season was more indicative of his potential. However I thought that he had the best chance of still being available for my 1st round pick because most drafters would look at his entire season, not having the advantage of reading/listening to local NY sports. I thought that the other 2, especially Jansen would be gone by the time my turn came. This proved to be the case, and I was able to have both Jansen and Conforto on my team.
As for the rest of the draft, I just tried to pick the best players available.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
My favorite pick is obviously Conforto, and I think he could be among the top 5-10 hitters this year.
Aside from Conforto, I do not have any favorite picks, but I think that Eovaldi and Buxton have the potential to have very good seasons.
Do overs?
I picked up Forrest Whitely last year and should have redrafted him for the future like I did with Acuna, Vlad, Jr. and Buehler.
Waited to long to redraft Hader.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I have more difficulty evaluating other teams than I do my own, so I will just agree with Khahan!

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
As usual, nothing.

5. What is your biggest hole right now? Anyone on the trade block to fix it?
Ignored replacing the HRs I lost without Nelson Cruz and the SBs I lost without Maalex Smith. These will be season-long problems.

Finally got around to do a right up and locked up when I tried to post it.

Looking back on the draft, I'm not really happy with my preps and don't think I did a good job of working on a full rebuild of the team.

Agree with most of Khahan's comments from his write up. Will see what happens through the season and then work on getting younger.

The bigger question is will Sales' long-term-contract become the worst in the history of MLB?

that's whats really throwing me DPR. My team era is over 4.00. yet I've still got an 8 in ERA. That's completely absurd. Seems like nearly every pitcher is off a bit this year.
Just looking over the top 10 SP you see just 1 single name you'd expect to see - Blake Snell who just went on the DL. Its populated with names like Tyler Glasnow, Matt Shoemaker, and Collin McHugh.

I remember commenting last season how crazy hitting seemed. Multiple teams last year after the first 3-4 weeks were batting under .250. Seems like this year its pitchers turn to get all twisted up.

well 1 month in despite horrendous starts from Kluber, Carrasco and Scherzer and DL stints from Robertson, Olson (2 of my first 4 picks), Judge and Turner (2 of my 7 keepers) I'm clinging to 4th and bouncing between that and 2nd. Strong performances from Christian Walker, Kolten Wong (neither of which were drafted) and Josh Bell on the hitting and Tyler Glasnow on the pitching side have helped keep me afloat. I can't wait until this team starts performing like they are supposed to.
Really. I can't wait. Da Bomb and especially DPR are too damn strong. Could be too big of a hole to dig out of.

Btw, dpr - how's that cody bellinger working out for you? ;)

Definitely cant have too many complaints about my teams start this year. Pretty much firing on all cylinders. I know it is early but in some categories I am already wondering if my lead is insurmountable absent some huge injuries.

Bellinger and Yelich have both been absolutely ridiculous. They are so far ahead of the other top ranked hitters. That said I was looking at it this morning and if you took either of them off my team without replacing and I would still be leading HRs and RBIs and I assume BA so I have some very solid depth as well. I would be one back in Rs if I didn't have Bellinger.

Josh Bell and Michael Chavis are doing their best to make me considering overhauling my 2020 keeper list. Meanwhile I'm running into a bit of a logjam at 1st base.
Matt Olsen, fresh off a hamate bone that injury that SHOULD have sapped his power, has hit 3 HR in his 5-6 games back from the DL.
Christian Walker, even after slumping for the better part of 2 weeks is still batting .283 with 8Hr and 3SB as a 1st baseman. That projects out to a 30HR, 10+SB pace with a .280 average and around 80 runs and rbi's each.

I could use a legit closer, a solid, play-him-every-day OF or SP that doesn't need streaming consideration.

Willing to move these guys straight up or package them. Not really interested in moving, Turner, Judge, German, Glasnow, Chavis, Bell or Baez though. Anybody else on my team including Machado, Hoskins or Scherzer from my stud tier down to guys like Verdugo who have future value are up for grabs in the right deal.

Yordan Alvarez is finally making his MLB debut today. I had offered him around for a closer, but there was no interest, so I will now see what he can do in the majors. Some services rank him as the top hitting prospect in the minors, and if he can continue his minor league hitting (.343/.443/.742, 23 HR, 71 RBI, 2 SB in 56 games), he will provide a big boost for my team.
I am not touting him for a trade, just excited to have in up in the majors.

Congratz Loki. He's one I wasn't able to snag in drafts in any league that I kind of feel I missed out on.

For me, Domingo German has now also hit the DL. I currently have 6 players on the DL, 4 of which are pitchers. If you have a SP you are interested in trading for Yasiel Puig or Matt Olson, let me know.

Or if you have a pitcher in this league and need him on the DL because he's on another team in another league, trade him to me. I can almost guarantee a DL trip as a way to subvert your competition across leagues.

My pitching has been ridiculously bad the last month or so with all my starters posting 5+ ERAs absent Castillo. Never would have thought an ERA could go from 3.2 to 4 so fast and I think whip has been even worse. my pitchers all have the talent to bounce back and show what they did early in the season but these categories need to improve to get back on top as I am right in the think of things.

If anyone has any pitching talent they are looking to deal shoot me an email.

I would be willing to trade Pete Alonso to a rebuilding team who is interested in acquiring a great young power hitter and would prefer to offer assets for this year than draft picks (or more likely a combination of both).

The offer would need to clearly improve my team for this year to entice me to trade a rookie ranked in the top 40 this year. I would be looking for a hitter to replace his production at 1b/OF (doesn't need as much power as DaBomb is pulling away, but RBIs Rs and SBs would be important) as well as upgrades elsewhere like catcher, either a closer or SP.

The price would be steep but for a team not competing this year but still with some solid talents this could be the chance to improve the keeper list heading into next season.

If I go into the offseason with Alonso he may still be on the block as I look to decide my last 2 keepers but the other players he would be competing against (Correa, Castillo, Merrifield, Clevinger) are too important to my team this year.

The choice is whether to shoot for 4th place with the possibility, albeit small, of finishing in 3rd place, or settle for 5th place and a better draft position in 2020. Pride has won out over sensibility, and the Zephyrs will try to finish the season with a flourish. Goes against my grain to tank.
Frustrating season with injuries (losing Chris Sale was a killer) and suspensions, including players for PEDS and child porn, but injuries have hit most teams that are out of contention.
Good luck to Da Bomb and dpr down the stretch.

Well it's my 6th championship and 3rd in a row, and this one might be the most fulfilling. Dpr got off to a huge early lead, Astade looked strong in July, and then dpr surged back again and it felt like an uphill battle to try to compete with his horses in Yelich, Bellinger, Rendon, Bregman, and Alonso. Post 159 said it well but it was also some motivation! Then I thought his Clevinger add for Kyle Tucker had a good chance of sealing my fate. My keeper group going into the season was not the best when compared to dpr or even Khahan's, especially after losing Severino plus Votto being cooked, so I knew I had to manage my best everyday and win on the margins.

Re: 210, I built up a decent cushion in ERA and WHIP but with innings to make up for in Wins and Ks. As soon as I started streaming more aggressively those cushions completely evaporated, but thankfully I had 2-3 very good big SP streaming days over the past couple weeks which helped to stabilize. I also made substantive strides in steals in the second half. This was tricky as I still had goals of passing dpr in HR and RBI and potentially AVG, so I needed more of 5 tool type of players, so pickups such as Laureano and Pham along with a big second half from Villar, plus Ketel Marte who was an off-day fill-in pickup who turned into a keeper were all huge. I also owe thanks to Eugenio Suarez, Gleyber Torres, Yuli Gurriel, Charlie Blackmon, Liam Hendriks, Jake Odorizzi, Jacob deGrom and Charlie Morton.

Good luck to those who have teams in the playoffs.

Does anyone know what happened to Wiggs? He didnt log in after the ASB. I think we need to think about how we can keep teams more engagd throughout the season. I know we added the draft fee penalty recently but it seems that interest is really waning in the league

Let me know if you are looking to add keepers as I likely have 10 top ~50 talents. A couple of these would be available for draft picks but I am ideally looking for 2:1 even if I only get a small upgrade. The first few are pretty much only available if I am getting Trout/Acuna in return.

Has anyone heard from (or reached out) to Wiggs? He was MIA for the last couple months of the season so we should be looking at replacing unless a good reason is given.

Also see post 218 for anyone thinking of making trades and acquiring a keeper.

I am here, I made my moves to make my team better for next season. I acquired a bunch of picks as well as some decent keepers. I am ready to roll for next season.
