Subject: 85 million

  Posted by: Ira - [17112317] Sun, Apr 29, 15:38

After recent calculations, I have figured out
that 85 million is when to stop $$ making & Go for
WWR 85 that is, to have a PERFECT Team

I have seen far worse than this. The problem is it is a statement with no analysis or info to back it up. The appropriate time to shift from $$$ to SWP is a critical element in the strategy of the game and is a topic worthy of discussion. However, it's of no value to just throw out a number in an authoritative manner without any info to lend any credibility.

Well after extensive calculations I have figured it will actually be $84.13 million to have an awesome team.

How did I figure this out you ask.... The same way IRA did. I was bored and decided to give out a number that I thought was right.

Taking into account tonights games, I can safely predict that it will only take $83.2M before you need to switch.

I think Ira has a reasonable # here. Once we hit 85 mil, we have enough ca$h afford to afford a stud-laden team, so money is far less important.
Maybe that idea just came to Ira so he felt a sudden, enigmatic need to make a new thread. I'm sure there is an old thread, probably a forum-keeper than anaylyzes this issue, of when to stop going for money, in detail.
I don't think he was trying to clutter up the boards, but instead just raising an old debate/issue.

Thank you, Ira!!!!! I don't often post on these 'boards' but I felt your post was worthy of my response. The other 'Gurupies' (Guru groupies)seem to be making fun...we will see who laughs last if you ride your plan all the way to the top!The 2 important things I have learned from studying up on this whole thing so far are.. 1) Try to get as many points as you can by the end of the season. The more points you get the better your chances are of getting a lower WWR( World -wide ranking).By putting in more players who perform well in the 'real world', you can get more points than your opponents in fantasy baseball. 2) Corollary to this..See if you can get a high roster value so you can get the better players!!! Seems simple, I know, but not as easy as it sounds :) I was trying to remember.. does anyone recall the name of that elitist division that started up midway through the season last year and was designed for top 500 managers only? I was in that for a short while, but was not able to finish out the season.Truly, Saw Dust

I don't think scoring alot of points will allow you to do better, see as I look at it, you score points to get a higher WWR, so say you end the season with a WWR of 2, not bad right? Smallworld is nice enough to give you a hat, pretty generous if you ask me. I'm making no sense, too many beers.

Any one want a cold one?

Ok, here's the way I see it. If a guy hits a home run, then that's better than a double, both in real life and in fantasy baseball. However, if that home run is a solo home run and the double scores 3 other guys then the double is better both in real life and in fantasy baseball. So since you want the best guys, you need to find guys who knock in a lot of runs and get a lot of hits. Some guys that steal some bases might be worth looking at, but the main correlary is that if the guys you have do well in real life, then you'll do well in fantasy baseball, so it's always better to buy the guys on the days they will do well and I think a lot of money will help you do this because a players fantasy baseball cost is similar to a real life salary so you always want the most expensive guys because they get hits and knock in runs.

Or something.

We all seem to be forgeting about pitching in this.

After some very intensive study, I have deduced that if you simply pick the pitchers when they are having a 100 point night that you will almost invariably get a better rank. Conversly, remember never to get a pitcher who is about to have a negative point night.

So much attention warrants me rating this thread a 2.

If I can rate individual posts, those that would get 1's would be those who mocked the whole post and discouraged people from posting and participating again as opposed to others who at least constructively suggested how to better justify the thoughts next time.

Ira, I would absolutely love to know a little bit about you and what you were thinking when you created this thread. I ask the following questions with no insult intended whatsoever. I am actually very impressed with you and your sense of humor about the whole thing. But I gotta know- how did you come up with 85 million ducats- or did you simply just say it randomly? Also, how long have you been playing fantasy baseball, and what do you do in the real world (student? attorney?)? Just interested because you have created a truly great thread. Puts a smile on my face every day.

Steve Biz, I am a 13 yr. old Student, this is my
2nd year in Fantasy Baseball, (doing great thanks
to this wonderful site). I actually came up with
up 86.5 million but rounded off to 85 since
players prices tend to change quite frequently.
How did I get 85 u ask? Well, I took the RANDRO,
Schilling, Miller & Brown (32.08) priced pitchers
pitchers, the price for an average great C (4.5),
a great 1B (7mil), a great 2B (3.7mil), a great 3B
(4.5), a grat SS (7), 4 great OF (Alou, L.Walker,
L.Gonzo, Juan Gone)(25.28) = 84.06 (eh? eh?)

Fair is fair, in light of the explanation of the now infamous $85 million figure, (see post #76) I have changed my vote.

The only thing I might add is that since hitter prices are going up faster this year, we may need a little more than the $85 as by the time we get there the players will be a little bit more expensive.

Good luck with your team Ira and keep up the good work.

RV- 54.87 , Cash Left-11.61 , WWR 12703, so i
guess I have 66.48 right now. The reason why my
roster value is so low, and my WWR is so high is
because I am focusing right now on making money.
My WWR has been to to 2000th at on time. My WWR
drifts from 2000-15000 all the time, every single
player I've got on my roster is stricly to make money

Now that this thread has earned the first ever double-triple, I thought I'd do a little recap for those who missed out. This is the best of the best from one of the funniest threads I've ever seen...........

(2) Wow, worst post ever, definitely getting a 1.

(3) yeah if there were one message on the boards that could get a 0 this would probably be it

(16) After recent calculations, I have figured out that this thread gets a 1.

(18) By putting in more players who perform well in the 'real world', you can get more points than your opponents in fantasy baseball. Corollary to this..See if you can get a high roster value so you can get the better players!!! (note: this actually was not sarcasm)

(22) it's always better to buy the guys on the days they will do well (note: this was)

(25) I have deduced that if you simply pick the pitchers when they are having a 100 point night that you will almost invariably get a better rank. Conversly, remember never to get a pitcher who is about to have a negative point night.

(27) thanks to your post I will change my entire strategy!

(42) Who other than Ira himself gives this thread a 5? (a bit of foreshadowing...)

(52) i would have to say that this thread is even worse than jose lima's ERA

(76) Steve Biz, I am a 13 yr. old Student. I actually came up with 86.5 million but rounded off to 85 since players prices tend to change quite frequently.... (Ira sheds some light on the situation, and earns some respect with a bit more explanation of his figure)

(88) Hey Ghettofield, have u written anything in this forum yet thats about baseball? My guess is no (go Ira!)

(91) I may as well give you a 5 too... (people start coming around)

(101) up to a 2.1, chugga chugga choo choo.

(118) 100 votes for '5'...amazing that it happened with the way this thread started out.

I think I represent a pretty large faction of gurupies when I say Thanks Ira- for the most unconventionally entertaining post of the year.

But, but, but...

Brian's Ballplayers ( id #37821 )---LAST night's best team---raked-up 671 big ones ( and 461 points the night before!! ) with a pitching score of 453 points at a paltry $12.44M!! Annnnd a hitting core of 218 for just $37.05M!

SO... that makes last night's top team worth a bargain-basement $49.49M ( he lost $40K today )---and the guy has 14 HTs and 8 PTs left!

He's in 78,596th and just passed 16,640 teams last night...If I where in the top 100, I'd be a little worried! ;-P

Randro(this is if Pedro comes back which is inevitable)
Schilling
Brown
Maddux
Rivera

Pudge
Helton
Boone
Jones
Arod
Luis
Walker
Manny
Bonds

And the grand total would be......$104.99. Hmmm just slightly over the 85 million dollar total ;-)

My "perfect" team would currently be (with exceptions for consistency and/or team):

Pitchers
Randy/Schilling - $11.26M
Greg Maddux - $7.44M
Mariano Rivera - $5.30M
Roger Clemens - $6.06M
Kevin Brown - $7.50M

Hitters
Ivan Rodriguez - $6.76M
Todd Helton - $8.19M
Bret Boone - $5.23M
Chipper Jones - $7.23M
Alex Rodriguez - $7.48M
Barry Bonds - $7.86M
Luis Gonzalez - $8.15M
Larry Walker - $7.56M
Sammy Sosa - $7.48M

Grand Total: $103.50M

I think it's a bit ambitious to think that for the season LoDuca will out-point Pudge. The same for Sweeney over Helton, Alou over Bonds, Berkman over Sosa/Manny, and Floyd over Walker. Further, Park only pitches good at home (2-4, 3.82 ERA on Road) which is not the kind of inconsistency you want from a high priced team. Clemens gets my nod there. And Reed over a healthy Brownie? No thanks. Reed has given up at least 3 ERs in 4 of his last 5 starts with only 3 decisions and 1 win. Plus, despite having a higher ERA, he has a better record on the road. Reed becomes a victim of the team surrounding him and that's another thing you don't want on a high priced team.

Dan, our teams are similar, but I gave the nod to Clemens over Pedro because of Pedro's questionable situation. If Pedro comes back (at all) as his dominant self, then he definitely makes the lineup rotating with RJ or as part of a GuruRotation. Also, I gave the nod to Sosa over Manny just to be different. ;) Seriously, both guys heat up after the ASB, but I liked Sosa's stats just a hair better.

Ira, do I think your team would have been a good team to have over about the last 15 days? Yeah, but it's not close to the "Perfect Team" overall. Is it the "Perfect Team" for $85M? Possibly, but that's not the issue so it really doesn't matter.

People, do not forget that Pedro's hurt. When he comes back, I can see all your so-called "perfect" teams need an extra $5M or so.

However, I do think that $85M is enough for these couple of weeks when the cheaper players are doing better (Sweeney, Alou, LoDuca, and a few days ago, Nevin). But like 2 weeks ago, I was running out of cash when the more expensive players were hot (Helton, Walker, Bonds, L.Gonzalez, etc.). That $85M changes week by week depending on the players' hotness (temperature?). And right now, it's leaning towards the cheaper side. But I won't be surprised when the 7-day best team would constantly soar well over $100M some time during the rest of the season.

One last note to Dan. You can't put Randro in a spot. If you think they are very good, they should each take a roster spot, cuz that's the definition of perfect. And your perfect RV would be close to $110M, which is not a problem. It's all hyperthetical anyways.

I'm disagreeing with both of you. You are picking the most poopular players:

Last 5
-------
Pudge- 96--(16 TSNP per game for the season)
LoDuca- 117--(17.4)

Sweeney- 225
Helton- 31

L. Walker- 72
Berkman- 92

Bonds- 41
Alou- 80

Ira, you think the leaders in SWP over the last 5 games are the perfect team? You need more help than just determining the perfect roster value. I think the definition of a perfect team is the team that will garner you the most SWP by the end of the season. Given that, isn't long term performance a better indicator than very short term performance? You really think Alou is going to outpoint Bonds for the season? Did you even begin to consider that Bonds already has 495 more SWP on the season than Alou? That's alot of points for Alou to make up for him to be a better choice on the "perfect" team. And what happens when Bonds breaks out of his slump? Bonds on a hot streak vs. Alou on a hot streak. Take your pick. If you pick Alou, you're crazy. I guess for your purposes, it's better to choose LoDuca, Sweeney, Berkman, Alou, and host of other "Hot-today-Gone-tomorrow's", but for the purposes of the "perfect" team, you have to open your eyes to the big picture: Long Term Points. Ever consider that the most popular players are popular for a reason? It's because they produce on the most consistent levels.

And one more thing Ira, you really need to start looking at SWP/EG (Eligible Games), especially when it comes to Catchers. Catchers get days off more than regular players. A Catchers SWP/EG takes this into account, whereas SWP/G does not. Consider then that Pudge has a season SWP/EG of 14.8 and LoDuca has a season SWP/EG of 13.2. Doesn't look to be a significant difference, but accross 81 games (assuming we're currently at the ASB), that means Pudge will outpoint LoDuca 1198.8 to 1069.2.

TLW, the "perfect" team is not without trades. If you think that the "perfect" team is a team of players that is set in stone and never has a trade, specifically for pitcher rotation, then you're missing the whole point. You can't just forget about important aspects of the game like pitcher rotation. It is, and always will be, and integral part of the game. The thing is, when you specify a spot as being rotated, you simply have to account for the more expensive of the 2 pitchers, which was done. Remember, we're talking the "perfect" SW team. Not the "perfect" set of 5 pitchers, 5 infielders, and 4 outfielders. Yes, there is a difference.

Before the season started, people would probably have a team something like this:

P Pedro Martinez/Randy Johnson
P Greg Maddux
P Kevin Brown
P Tom Glavine
P David Wells

C Ivan Rodriguez

1B Todd Helton/Mark McGwire

2B Jeff Kent

3B Larry "Chipper" Jones

SS Alex Rodriguez

OF Sammy Sosa
OF Barry Bonds
OF Manny Ramirez
OF Ken Griffey Jr.

This is of course before any injuries were found out. (Griffey, McGwire, Brown) You have to admit not many, if any people predicted Bret Boone, Lance Berkman, Ryan Klesko, or Paul LoDuca (if people knew who LoDuca was) to do as good as they have done.

LoDuca was injured for a very long time, thanks for pointing out PudgeFan07 that Pudge has only 200 more than LoDuca, it proves that if LoDuca didnt get injured, he'd be about 300 points over Pudge. Sweeney is only 100 points away from Helton, which isnt much difference other than 3 million dollars for an extra hundred points. Exact same thing with Berkman and Walker. I dont think you can really have a perfect team with trading 3 guys a week

Yes in the long run Pudge will produce a lot more points then LoDuca. The roster I posted is a roster I would like to use if I were to use no trades on my hitters at all, therefore making it a perfect team for the long run, not a short term perfect team.

Ira, repeat after me: "S-W-P-per-E-G". It takes injuries, play time (or lack thereof) and points into account.

By saying that LoDuca was injured, thus he would outpoint Pudge, you're only taking points into consideration. This is misleading. "EGs" are games that the player was eligible to play (as in, Not on the DL), and according to Pudge's and LoDuca's SWP/EG, Pudge still outpoints LoDuca.

Maybe I should just give up, you guys dont get it, and it looks like you never will. All I'm trying to say is that Pudge has more points than LoDuca because LoDuca was injured and Pudge wasnt. All I'm trying to say is that LoDuca is better because when LoDuca wasnt injured, he had more points. If you note how many points LoDuca got SINCE his return, you'd be surprised to find out that its more than Pudge has since that peticular date. If you look at how many points LoDuca had BEFORE his injury, you'd be surprised that, guess what? LoDuca had more points. surprise surprise, its called concept, what makes you think Pudge would still have more without LoDuca's injury. And dont you throw this "Eligable games" crap on me, because LoDuca has played every game he could (except maybe about 3 or 4 because of Park) and he ROX

Ira, your post #216 revolves around LoDuca's injury/time off. Try revolving the stats around Pudge's injury/time off. Then again, you might not want to do that because it might (gasp!) prove you wrong.

Then again, you could just look at the SWP/EG and see that you're wrong anyhow, but that would just be too easy I suppose.

What i was trying to say was the only reason Pudge has a hiigher EG avr. is because LoDuca was injured for a very long time, and that if LoDuca is a starter, u shouldnt have to look at the EG avr. , but the TSNP/game avrg.

From the Sartables:

Rodriguez 72 eligible games, LoDuca 68. Both were on the DL a relatively equal time, LoDuca was on just 4 more games.

Rodriguez 66 games played, LoDuca 51. So Pudge has sat only 6 games, while LoDuca has sat 17 games.

Rodriguez 15.7 SWP/G, LoDuca 17.8 SWP/G. LoDuca is getting 2 more SWP when he plays. But he sits much more often.

For the perfect team, I still want Pudge.

Ira, so you're saying that you shouldn't take into account the fact that a catcher sits 17 out of 68 eligible games? The fact that he does sit for Park starts means that SWP/EG is even more relevant. Once again trying to explain this simple concept, SWP/EG takes into account the number of eligible games a player has sat out. Thus, LoDuca's numbers are worse than Pudge's because LoDuca sits out more eligible games, which adds to the case of Pudge being a better selection. He not only gets more overall points, he also has more opportunities to get points.

You do realize that sitting 17 of 68 games translates to sitting 25% of the games played, don't you? Not quite what I would call "perfect".

The "perfect" team wins with overall points, not SWP/Gm, thus Pudge wins the battle of the catchers because he ends up with more points through a combination of SWP/EG and Games Played.

Ira, it's not a matter of being "happy", I'm just trying to show you the flaw in your reasoning in hopes that you will understand it and be able to benefit from it. Remember the whole Conine thing? I tried to tell you what kind of player he was, you didn't listen, you ended up selling him shortly after buying him because he was exactly the kind of player that I said he was, based on his SWP/EG. I, too, used to get caught up in SWP/Gm until I realized how encompassing the EG aspect is. Guys go on the DL? It's factored in. Guys sit out of games? It's factored in. Guys are hot for the games they play? It's factored in.

You, yourself, pointed out that LoDuca sits out every 5th game because of Park. If we were at the ASB, with 81 games remaining, this means that LoDuca would have the potential to play in 65 (64.8) games (4-out-of-5 for 81 games). At his currently listed SWP/Gm (17.8), that's a potential 1157 SWP.

Outside of injury off-time, I can only find 3 games that Pudge has sat out in the first half of the season. If that carries over to the second half, Pudge has a potential to play in 78 games (81 games minus 3 sit-outs). At his currently listed SWP/Gm (15.7) that's a potential 1224.6 SWP.

Can you see the flaw in your reasoning now? Your reasoning assumes that LoDuca will have the same potential number of games played as Pudge, when it's obviously not true. Want to hear something else interesting? Use 81 "Eligible Games" for both players, and use their current SWP/EG (13.3 for LoDuca, 14.4 for Pudge) and you get the following:
SWP based on SWP/Gm for Pot.Gms
LoDuca: 1157
Pudge: 1224.6

SWP based on SWP/EG for 81 games
LoDuca: 1077.3
Pudge: 1166.4

SWP based on SWP/Gm for 81 games
LoDuca: 1441.8
Pudge: 1271.7

The flaw in your reasoning should be absolutely obvious now. Can you see LoDuca's inflated stats based on him playing 81 games using SW's SWP/Gm? Notice that Pudge's totals are only separated by about 100 SWP (about 50 SWP of which are a result of games missed before going on the DL), yet LoDuca's totals are separated by almost 400 SWP (about 75 of which are a result of games missed before going on the DL). Realistically, if a guy played every single team game (or every single eligible game), then all of the above 3 totals would be equal. Since Pudge has played almost every single one of his eligible games, the totals are very close. However, since LoDuca hasn't, the totals are way off, which is why SWP/EG becomes the better indicator, as shown by the close proximity between SWP based on SWP/Gm for Pot.Gms and SWP based on SWP/EG for both players.

Does this make it easier to understand how Pudge will outpoint LoDuca? If LoDuca played every game like Pudge, then yes, LoDuca's your man. But since he only plays 80%, compared to Pudge's almost 100%, he loses out on significant points and the lets Pudge retain the lead.

Again, I'm not trying to be "happy". I'm just trying to point out a flaw in your reasoning that has led to errors in the past and will in the future.

BTW, normally a difference of 400 isn't considered "way off", but consider:
1441.8 is 134% of 1077.3 (LoDuca's difference)
1271.7 is 109% of 1166.4 (Pudge's difference)

Now, 400 can be considered "way off", IMHO.

Thats all true KKB, but I'd have to think that the Dodgers will get Loduca's bat in there somehow if they stay in the pennant race. If Park is pitching perhaps they'll start him at 1st? I just can't see LA sitting one of their top hitters once every 5 games.

Btw, is 89 SWP really worth the extra 3-4 mil? Until I have over 100 million+ SWD in my bank I'm sure I can spend that money better elsewhere. I know, you never said anything about right now, just who would be the better catcher for a perfect team. I thought I'd point this out anyway. ;)

Actually, I agree with Ira on the SWP/EG thing.
If you sort players by SWP/EG, I think it's because of laziness. If (just a hypothetical if)I read the baseball news and know that LoDuca is going to play almost as frequently as Pudge for the rest of the season because he has proven that he can hit consistently, then LoDuca is clearly the better choice.
I think one should do some research on the players before buying them.

Rogue's Strikers, the point of the thread is the "perfect" team (most points), not the most "efficient" team (most points for the money). Thus, the argument of how much LoDuca costs is moot. In regular SW terms, yes, LoDuca is more valuable than Pudge, but not in the sense of what is being discussed in this thread.

The Left Wings, I don't sort by SWP/EG and I never said anything about sorting that way. I simply pointed out to Ira that it's a more telling stat than SWP/Gm in that it takes into account games that a player has sat out and will continue to sit out. How it is more lazy than any other stat in the sortables is beyond me because that's exactly what sortables are used for; cutting down research time. And how is sorting by SWP/EG any more lazy than sorting by SWP/Gm (what Ira is promoting)? It's no more "lazy", it's just a better stat to use.

And where is the concrete information that LoDuca will play every day if LOS is in a pennant race? The only time he did play every day was when Karros was injured. And when is it defined that LOS is in a pennant race? They're 4.5 games back right now, yet they still sat LoDuca in Parks last 2 starts. All this stuff is hypothetical. Well, hypothetically, what if Pudge goes on a tear and just explodes in SWP. Isn't that just as possible, too?

Stick to the facts. Pudge is the better choice, in terms of total SWP at any price, at catcher.

I simply pointed out to [you] that it's a more telling stat than SWP/Gm in that it takes into account games that a player has sat out and will continue to sit out." Please show me, anywhere in my previous posts where I said that I, personally, sort by SWP/EG when looking to buy players. None of the quotes you put in your last post say that so I would love for you to be able to point out where I said that. How about I just save you the time and tell you that you won't find it. It's kind of hard for me to say I sort by SWP/EG when I don't. Every quote you posted refers to the difference between SWP/Gm and SWP/EG. Or did you miss the part in post 206 where I was comparing SWP/EG to SWP/Gm in the first place: "A Catchers SWP/EG takes this into account, whereas SWP/G does not."

Sometimes I wonder why I even try to help someone who raved about Conine's SWP/Gm, then promptly sold him after realizing that he sucked when his SWP/EG showed this all along and was pointed out.

I'm done with this thread. It's plainly obvious, from both the Conine thread and this one, that Ira 1.) can't comprehend and understand baseball statistics and/or 2.) chooses to ignore statistics that completely refute statements he's made.

Ira, I notice you still have managed to avoid responding to posts 233 and 234. Could it be because your argument for LoDuca is bunk based on the information I have provided in those two posts? Yeah, I think so. But don't bother responding because there's really no need for a response. There is no statistical evidence to refute what I laid out in those 2 threads, so anything you say is your opinion and we know what that is: Conine and LoDuca rule!

So much for trying to help someone understand simple statistics. See ya at the end of the year when, barring unforseen injuries to either player, Pudge will have more SWPs than LoDuca. Bye, bye!

And FWIW, I take being called a "computer nerd" quite a compliment. It's paid my bills quite nicely and I have a lot of fun doing what I do and am enjoying the opportunity of being my own boss. I've also received many compliments for my work and if it requires being a "computer nerd" to be a very well respected person in my profession, then being a "computer nerd" can't be a bad thing. Further, I enjoy posting to the Rotoguru message boards during "mini-breaks" while doing my work which is why I can often times be found posting at odd hours, a result of an undying love for what I do and my level of commitment to being the best at what I do and providing my clients with the best work for their money. So, thanks for the compliment!

Now, back to posts 233 and 234. Stop avoiding it and skirting the issue.

BTW, Ira, are you saying you were asleep when you posted posts 238, 240, and 241?

Just respond to posts 233 and 234 and let the excuses and fact-dodging go. If this were an essay test, it would read something like: "Given the facts listed above (posts 233 and 234), explain how it is possible that Paul LoDuca can be a better choice over Pudge Rodriguez as the Catcher on the "Perfect" points producing team, where the goal is to maximize total points."

It's just that easy.

Call it a character flaw. I like to respond to people who thing being a "computer nerd" is a bad thing. ;)

Ira, please do not use this argument as a way to avoid responding to posts 233 and 234. I wouldn't want you to spend time arguing the finer points of being a "computer nerd", only to have me, once again, ask you to respond to posts 233 and 234 (which you could have done in post 244, but chose to only post your excuse for not responding, instead of responding).

Remember, LoDuca vs. Pudge. How is LoDuca a better choice given all the information in posts 233 and 234?

Response to post 233 & 234- You just damn well cant wait, so I'll just say it. You think you are better than me, youre better than me. You gotta correct me every time i'm wrong to prove your better than me. Hell, you should chang to "Chief". Well, your better than a 12 year old. You should be proud. Asking me if I'm a politician? Good one.

Ira, you are right that this forum is about expressing opinions, but its main purpose is to share knowledge about fantasy sports. If someone is always just posting their opinion, without backing anything up with statistics, then it really doesn't mean much and just stays an opinion. If I constantly say, "Richie Sexson is a bad baseball player," then it doesn't mean anything. However, if you state something, then back it up with statistics or other evidence, then it becomes more than an opinion and becomes something to debate and to learn from. Like if I said, "Richie Sexson is a bad ball player because he leads the Majors in K's with 101 and is only hitting .252" then it becomes a point for debate and is no longer soley an opinion.

I'm not trying to shoot down your opinion about LoDuca being "better", which is an arbitrary, opinionated, statement. I even said in post 237 "In regular SW terms, yes, LoDuca is more valuable than Pudge, but not in the sense of what is being discussed in this thread". What I'm trying to do is to debate the merits of LoDuca vs. Pudge with regard to being part of the "perfect" team where maximum points are the sole focus. If you want to simply say, "LoDuca is better", then do that. That's fine, but it has no relevance to this thread, nor to the "perfect" team as it is soley an opinion. However, this is not what you have ever done. You have always tried to back up the thought that LoDuca is a better choice than Pudge with flawed statistics which means your statements are opinions anymore.

Layman's terms:
Opinion: "LoDuca is a better catcher than Pudge"
Statement/Argument: "LoDuca is a better catcher than Pudge because he has a better SWP/Gm"

Yes, there is a difference. And if you don't give a damn, so be it. It's your thread to start with and I'm just trying to show the flaw in your reasoning to help you better understand this aspect of the game so you can better improve your own teams and your thinking behind subjects like this.

Stop taking things so personally and just look at it as a simple debate over who is the better catcher in terms of total SWP over the season: LoDuca or Pudge.

KrazyKoalaBears - Regardin post #253, you write, "If someone is always just posting their opinion, without backing anything up with statistics, then it really doesn't mean much and just stays an opinion.

Actually, when I talk sports, I prefer talkin opinions of players.

While I agree with you that I-Rod will outpoint Loduca at season's end, I base my opinion on what I've seen from them in actual play, not tedious stats.

ok am i missing something here? if the PERFECT team is the team that has the most points and pudge has more points then loduca wouldnt pudge be the obvious choice? Especially when there is no salary cap.

I think the reason Ira cannot agree with KKB here is evident. This thread has become larger than life in the annals of Rotoguru.com, and to admit that LoDuca should be replaced by Pudge would be tantamount to admitting that the sacred "85 million" around which the fantasy universe revolves is somehow not a correct figure in fact. Yeah right, and the world is round, too, right KKB?

This thread is way too long to ready everything, but I just want to mention to KKB. You said that Lo Duca sits every 5 games when Park pitches. It may be true that Lo Duca does not catch him, but have you noticed who's been playing 1st base lately?
Lo Duca. I'm not trying to argue who is better between pudge and paul, but considering that the Dodgers are using him even when he doesn't catch, you may want to reconsider some of the numbers you've crunched.

Khahan, you're right. This thread has gotten too long. The issue of Park getting rest days on the days Park pitches was already covered in post 237

"And where is the concrete information that LoDuca will play every day if LOS is in a pennant race? The only time he did play every day was when Karros was injured. And when is it defined that LOS is in a pennant race? They're 4.5 games back right now, yet they still sat LoDuca in Parks last 2 starts. All this stuff is hypothetical."

Nothing to reconsider.

Bob Sacamano, as mentioned in that thread, it would be mostly a result of Grissom getting knocked out because of contact with an ump. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that it would be a long term move. If it is, then it certainly changes the complexion of things, but as of now, it still completely depends on the circumstances surround the play time. If Grissom gets his spot back, which seems reasonable considering he's been pretty hot this year compared to years past, then it's no different than LoDuca picking up a few games when Karros was out. I suspect this is the case, but with regard to a Pudge vs. LoDuca debate, it would have to be a "wait-and-see" thing until Grissom is finished with his proposed suspension and the "Park lineup" is finalized again.

Hard to believe that most of the debate really comes down to Chan Ho Park's preference of a Catcher, eh? ;)

Maddux does the same thing with Javy Lopez. Lopez doesn't call a good game though, from what i here. but that's off the topic

I didn't read the thread a-boot Loduca before i posted here.

Bob Sacamano, it's all good. I'm always up for a good debate. ;)

It's not totally off topic in this thread, but it is interesting that Maddux prefers Perez over Lopez. I'm not sure what kind of game Lopez calls, but it's either bad or it's just not Maddux's style. Either way, you've got to keep a pitcher like Maddux, and Park, happy when they're on the mound and if it takes a different catcher than the "norm", then so be it.

Anyhow, maybe this thread will just die for now and we can come back to it at the end of the year when Piazza is leading all Catchers in SWP. LOL!!! ;)

Kind of nice seeing Yankees Rule post right there up at the top. He's probably the only person with less to say than ira. Another classic was Todd's "shiznit was responsible for the probables" thread where strike one changes his name to Strike Three and says "you're out!" and then says "this is really strike one." I mean come on, it was funny, but did you really have to tell us it was you, just to get attention? Why not just say "Hello look at me" like I do?

Got through about the 1st 20 posts and started enjoying this thread again. Think I'll wait for a slower day to finish it out(tomorrow).I think this one ranks up there with "you know you are a gurupie when?" (hope that is close)thread. Or that YOUNGBUCK (I swiped the basketball thread). Matter of fact if I had the time, I would post a thread with "links to some of the best threads" as a title with links. Maybe some of you studs have time.Hope it is very slow at work tomorrow if this is the case.

You mean Felipe Alou? As in, a clubhouse staredown?

Barry: Yo, Fil-EEP, why you wanna pull me after 8, baby? If we get 3 guys on next inning, I could bat again, and go for the Cove.

Felipe: Barry, Barry, Barry, I wan you fresh for tomarrow. We play LA and I wan you to hit FIFE HOME RRRUNS. Cinco, you know, baby?

Barry: (Scowl, Nasty Stare)

Felipe: (Firm Stare)

Barry turns tail and hits the showers.

Yeah, I guess I'd take Alou, too.

who is a bum? your dad!!! trust me i have always been the black sheep of the family until one of my sister took over the role. It's not easy. My dad was a military guy and very strict. VERY VERY strict. He was raised poor and his dad was an army guy. ONe of the highest ranked officers. Granny once said that when he was like 8 he was a caddy for his dad. One of his dad's friends offered him a soda and "my dad-the 8 year old took it" He was punished severly because his dad couldn't afford to buy his own son a soda pop.

I was given everything because my dad was given nothing from his parents. But rules had to be followed. I never did anything bad until now. I didn't have my first drink until i was 21. I never stayed out late. Did all chores in the house. Fixed all cars. I had to get up at 5 am every night. I went to a private high school that was an hour commute. Life moves on.

Let's just say the tv sat out on the lawn for a week. Not sure how he threw out so far.

One time i busted a window with BB gun.
I remember my dad's words. "Here's your BB gun Son and he broke over his knee."

I was looking at one of my teams this afternoon and contemplating some moves when I mumbled to myself, "If I had an extra 5 mil in RV I'd be all set." My team currently has about 80 million in RV. I then thought to myself, "Damn, Ira was right all this time!." You may laugh at this thread but in my eyes Ira is a modern day Copernicus.

Thanks, but I will pass. I was comparing our teams in the two leagues we we are both in and realized this season is a complete fluke. We had great drafts, but the players let us down. That's my story and I am sticking to it. BTW, you are realing screwing up my bid for that last playoff spot in RIFC with that winning streak of yours. Guru was supposed to go ahead and take one of the top six spots and I was supposed to be looking good for spot number 8. Now, if you finish in the top 6, I am competing with him and Sludge for points and that doesn't look so good.

If either of us scored every week like you did last week we would both be in the play-offs for sure. You had a great week. I still don't have access to fanball commisioner from work, but IIRC you had a 160ish and a 130ish scores. Legge has been scoring like crazy lately too.

Actually it was 150ish and 170ish. And that was with Porter benched on one team, and McGahee benched on the other. Too bad I'm too dumb to have started them both on both teams. I would have had another 60 total points.

God, Seattle stinks. Holmgren should be ashamed of himself for what happened last week.

Just started watching the playoffs. Good stuff. It's still too hard to follow since NFL isn't in Canada, so we dont get much games here. One might argue the same for baseball, but to me, baseball is a more straight forward as far as stats go..

How can football pool be fun? You have like 40 players on each of the 30 teams with a 240-game season, which comes to 0.2 game/player. Comparing to baseball, you have like 40 players on each team (plus callups), but they play almost EVERYDAY in 2430-game seasons, which comes to 2.025 game/player. Each baseball player gets about 10 times as many exposure than a football player does.

Even hockey is better, with about 25 players on each team and 1230-game seasons, it comes to 1.64 game/player.

The best one is basketball, as the number is highest at 3.20 game/player.

How can football fans stand having no games during the weekdays? How can they stand it when the stats of their players don't change during the weekdays?

What are all of these stats you are throwing around? Seems pretty senseless.

30 teams x 16 games each = 480 team games

Anticipation.

Simple word. It explains so much.

I prefer football because every game means something. The more games you have (i.e. baseball as #1), the less a fan cares about each individual game.

Or is it "stop $$ making & Go for

OK, now I'm confused. Am I going for WWR 85, or $85 million?

So to answer #594, which was posted almost a year ago, Ira the Albertan kid has gotta be 20 this year. I remember he joined the hockey board when he was like 12 and he used his dad's name to win his dad a wide-screen TV or something in the CBC hockey pool or something. Damn that was a long time ago.

Judging from the viewing statistics for this thread, I see a lot of people are still checking it once in a while.

On July 16, this thread will be 3000 days old. That's old. There have been 604 posts and 1721 ratings and 1254 views from 617 users. Well, that's not entirely true - the views are since March, 2007, when this thread was almost 6 years old. I'd guess we're near 10,000 views. When it started, ARod was playing his first games for the Rangers and the Mets were the defending NL champs. And Mark McGwire was the all-time home run champ.

Apri 29, 2003 in baseball:

First time Ichiro and Godzilla played against each other in MLB

First time Dusty Baker managed against the Giants after leaving them (note: Sammy vs Bonds match up with Kerry Wood on the mound for Chi)

And on April 29 17 years prior to this Roger Clemens struck out 20 Seattle Mariners for the Red Sox.

April 29, the original date of this thread is possibly one of the most important days in baseball (and fantasy) history!

Since we're only playing 37% of the season does that mean we only need 31.45 mil?

And how the hell did this thread get to be nearly 20 years old? How have we been around that long?

I feel old now. I think I might need $85 million to retire.

I haven’t thought about Ira or this thread for years. Thanks for the bump. SW was fun.
