Subject: Mientkiewicz Name Randomizer

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Wed, May 16, 11:59

Just for fun, I took someone's recent suggestion (I forget who) and built a function that generates a random spelling of . (This only works in the baseball forum.)

The function produces a spelling which starts "Mientk" and then finishes with a series of random letters. Each time this item appears, the spelling will be different, so if you put in a second time, it should be a different spelling. And the next time you open the same thread, all of the spellings will be different again.

To insert this in your message, just click on the appropriate link which is below the text entry area. This will place the proper code at the end of your text. If you need to move it, make sure you move the entire item, starting with the script tag, and ending with the /noscript tag.

For those who don't have JavaScript enabled in your browser, you'll just see the correct spelling. That's your punishment for not enabling scripting!

Have some fun!

By the way, if it isn't working properly, then you may need to refresh (or reload) the page. The function is actually built into the page header, which might still be coming from your cache - pre-.

Also, the function link will only appear in newly created threads. You can still insert the code in older threads (including those in other forums), but the user-friendly link won't be there to automatically insert it for you.

I wonder how many times you would have to click on the post before the randomizer would spell it correctly by accident? Pretty funny

F Gump - it's highly likely that your browser is already JavaScript enabled.

In Netscape 4.xx, you do this under the "Advanced" tab of Preferences. (Bottom choice in the browser's edit menu.)

In MSIE, I think it's automatically enabled. You can turn it off in the security section, but if you're not sure what you're doing, I advise that you leave well enough alone.

At some point, in theory you should hit the randomizer and the right spelling should pop up. I wonder how many times you would have to do it before that would happen. I know that I have said this before but I am still waiting to see it happen.

Gee MITH, if you read post # 71 you might just find your answer. Since the randomizer seems to append 6,7 or 8 letters to the end of th 'Mientk' string the odds are probably 3X Chuck's probability. Almost a billion to one shot. I'm not holding MY breath.

Strike One, trade that flea market calculator for a real one. ;}

wouldn't it be more like:
1 in 6,080,389,219,008

Given:
there are up to 15 characters returned.
The first 6 are always - Mientk
Characters 7-12 you have 26 to choose from
Characters 13-15 you have 27 to choose from (if you assume a space is counted as a character with the same probability as any other letter)

There would have to be some kind of stipulation though that if character 13 is empty, then so is 14 and 15, and I'm not sure how to calculate that!??!?!

So...26*26*26*26*26*26*27*27*27=6,080,389,219,008

I'm sure there's also something I'm missing, i've actually got a degree in stats and am working hard to forget everything i learned :)

Your are assuming some things that are not part of the program.

The program appends 6 random letters or letter combos to the end of "Mientk". Not every letter in the alphabet is made available. When there are exactly 6 letters appended, then 6 single letters have been chosen. When there are more than 6, then one or more letter combos has been selected as an alternative to a single letter. For example, one available letter combo is "cz".

So, what we need is a random selection of i-e-w-i-c-z in that precise order. Each of those single letters has a 1/13 chance of being selected. So the chance of a correct spelling is only 1 in 136.

104Guru

BTW, the chance of a correct spelling of Roethlisberger is 5 times greater, or slightly under 1 per million.
